I think he maintains the consistent view that our capacity for Nation Building, there is a Counter Terrorism. Shes right that there will continue to be threats in afghanistan but i think what Joe Biden and his advisers would say, there are Terrorist Threats in other countries where we dont have u. S. Ground forces and we can take Military Wax a Drone Strike or an air strike. And we can reserve the right to do that in afghanistan. I think the verdict of this, you talk about global standing. What does Joe Biden do next . Where does he take Foreign Policy . Putting a period on this post 9 11 chapter that weve lived through. The u. S. Took huge hit to our credibility. But 15 years later, we had won the cold war. So this is always a living legacy here. And i think that what he has to do is show that he can effectively evacuate people, resettle afghans who stood by us, he can deal with Counter Terrorism challenges going forward but also reposition america to deal with these other challenges from Climate Change to the promotion of democracy in the world. There is to guarantee hell succeed but his bet is we need to move beyond this period. Frankly the failures in afghanistan have already taken place. What were seeing is the manifestation of the last 20 years with an effort that is not succeeding. This has been handling in a way that put people at risk in terms of afghans who work with us. They have a window of time and they should extend if it they need. To once you pull up stakes and youre gone, anybody left there will have a hard time getting out. So they have to focus on how much can they get people out and how much can they demonstrate to the world that this is not just about getting out of afghanistan because of some political effort at home. It is about repositioning america going forward to be a stronger and more effective nation in the world than we have been in prosecuting the war on terror. So sam, let me give you the last word. It is in the brass tacks category. By my count the White House is trying to exit afghanistan, slow down a pandemic and pass an ambitious domestic program. Two out of three, not bad . A fairly hefty agenda, i suppose. I think it is fair to say that the White House felt it would have been in a better position at this point on the pandemic. I mean, you look back to two, three months ago. They were talking about the revised cdc guidelines on masking. There is the idea that the summer would be a reentry of society. And we of course were hitting the delta variant. The same with afghanistan. The initial idea was we would have a semi orderly withdrawal, as much as you can have one by september 11th. Would you commemorate 20 years of the war with some sort of commemoration. And that would be the end of that chapter in the post 9 11 policy. And then you would have an Infrastructure Deal by now. All of these have been pushed back. All the deadlines have been missed. All the expectations that the biden administration had for success have been downgraded. And at this juncture, if you look at i. It is hard to see where they can score what would be categorized as clean cut win. They feel very bullish about the fact that they have 70,000 people out of kabul in the last ten days and it is a notable achievement.
