All in starts right now. Good evening from new york. Im chris hayes. I cant believe im about to say this but here goes, right now, in the state of florida, as of today, more people are dying per day than any other point in the covid pandemic. Just think about that for a minute as you look at this chart. Its august of 2021, we have been battling this virus for 18 months, through incredible human ingenuity, work by scientists in Public Health workers, we have a variety of safe and effective vaccines. One of which receive full approval from the Food And Drug administration today. We are also the richest country in the world. We are sitting on the worlds biggest stockpile of vaccine doses, people around the world, are desperate for the vaccines that we have, those vaccines, are the best tool for fighting this thing, and theyve been ravaging our fellow americans, or fellow humans across the, world and yet this, this, this is whats happening in florida. Sevenday Rolling Average of fatalities, against every other previous wave since the start of the pandemic. How . How is this possible . The answer to that question is complicated of course. The Delta Variant really is more transmissible, there are a lot of factors, some of it is probably random honestly. Weve seen this alive. But the key revel of tory moment, that tells a lot of the story, about whats happening in florida, did not happen in florida, happened in alabama. Happen this weekend. We set the scene free. The disgraced twice in preach Ex President , who is nothing if not a junkie for the admiration of phoning crowds. In a Farm North of birmingham, its heart of trump country, friendly group coming out to feed Donald Trump, one of the big alabama crowd. And before them, up on stage, he does something i have to say, someone unexpected. He endorses the vaccine. But the way that he does it, in what happens after is the real story. A play for you now. Just trying to take it all in. You know what, i believe totally in your freedoms, i do. Your free you have to do it you have to do. But, i recommended take the vaccines. I did it its good. Take the vaccines. But, its okay, its all right. You got your freedoms. But i happen to take the vaccine. If it doesnt work, you will be the first to know. So what does happen there . He said essentially, i got the vaccine, you should too. Someone, maybe a few, people a few dozen in the crowd, booed him. They booed Donald Trump for recommending the vaccine. And you can see the panic in his eyes, as he makes a hasty retreat. You got your freedoms, and you can hear him screwing up a tiny bit of courage he has, before he enters the, rip knowing this is probably going to happen. Looking is terrified as a nine year old and a high Diving Board trying to get himself to jump, this mr. Braggadocious, mr. Donald, Trump Everything is great, and bold and beautiful, and im the best, and hes terrified of what hes going to say, because Donald Trump fears that crowd. He knows, some of them hate vaccines, any fears they will reject, even him. Theyre dear leader. If he says the simple, obvious truth, which is that they should get vaccinated. And then his worst fears are proven in that moment, and so he retreats like a coward. And you noah, i believe totally in your freedoms i, do you have to do it you have to do, but, i recommend take the vaccines, i did it, its good, take the vaccines. Its okay, its all right. Youve got your freedoms. But i happen to take the vaccine, if it doesnt work, you will be the first to know. But dont beat up on me, im still youre guy. Whenever you got your freedoms, maybe a work,. There were thousands of people at that Farmers Market tonight. 56 of the eligible population has received one, dose that is of the majority of the people that did it. So i would bet, a fair number of people at that rally were vaccinated. And again, you can see the crowd right behind him. Its not like Tens Of Thousands of people booed in unison. He said go get the vaccines, he got heckled a little bit, in those people, the kind of people who not only show up to a Donald Trump rally in alabama in august, outside, but boo Donald Trump when he says you should get the vaccine, they are statistically, a tiny portion of the population of this country. They were a tiny portion of the crowd. And yet they have effectively seen his power over public Health Policy. That is the story, when you look at this chart, of Covid Deaths in florida. At least in part, those kinds of people, once you show up at school board meeting, scream at Public Health officials, film into their car, instead everyones going to know your name. They are not the majority of our fellow americans, all political persuasions. They are. Not these are the people driving public Health Policy in the Republican Party, one of only two viable political coalitions who govern this country. And that public Health Policy is getting people killed. In fact, no less a figure, then Radio Host Alex jones, whose personification of destruction, madness, guys who believe Sandy Hook and, 9 11 were inside jobs, that guy tore into Donald Trump, for having this shame on you trump, seriously. If you dont have the good sense, to save yourself in your political career, thats okay, it leads will get some good republicans elected. We like to, but my god, maybe youre not that brave. Maybe trump is actually a dump at the mass. That guy, a ridiculous disgrace carnival worker, back i, think about this, Donald Trump is scared of criticism from that guy. And so in his own way, Alex Jones has the Veto Power over public Health Policy in the Republican Party. Alex jones in the fringe, farright people who booed trump at the Alabama Rally this weekend, that is how, you get a situation like what is happening in florida. Republican governor Ron Desantis, wants the votes, and support of those hecklers, and he is treated the pandemic largely like a liberal bogeyman last year he liked it all Covid Restrictions on businesses, way before the vaccines prevailed. Now that the Vaccine Rate is lagging behind, about 59 of the eligible population is fully vaccinated, this disaster is raging. Its objectively a terrible situation hundreds of florida indians are dying. And governor is not taking care of the citizens here represents, instead hes been busy himself a nonsense. Like Shadow Boxing with Joe Biden over the, border in assuring people that florida hospitals are open for business. Open for business . He has displayed, not one iota of the kind of seriousness an elected official of either party should win presiding over a disaster, a Tragedy A Mass Death event. He has shown hes capable of, this is not a dumb guy. Earlier this summer, when the Condo Tower collapsed near miami, governor desantis, played the role of completely normal official overseeing a terrible tragedy, he mourn the dead, providing information, pledged to find out what happened. Met with Joe Biden, they had an event, together it was completely amicable and serious. Ron desantis can do that. He is capable of it. He just will not do it with the pandemic. Because if he does, if he admits that this is a crisis in his state right, now more people dying than at any other point, that his state needs to take some extra steps to save his people, they need to push back the nations more strenuously. He will face the same backup from the kind of folks that heckle Donald Trump. And if he does, that he fears no future in the Republican Party. So thats where we are. All the posture and ridiculous fight about Mask Mandates in schools, which i think the evidence shows, makes floridians in students less safe, but also, they serve a vital function for governor desantis. An expressive function, they are his Wink And Nod to the hecklers in the crowd, showing that he is on their side, and you cannot defeat the virus if you cater to those hecklers. Again, we are not talking about a majority. Look at the numbers, this is a new polling from nbc, it shows that the population, sub demographic, least enthusiastic about getting vaccinated, are basically the ones you expect, trump supporters and people in rural areas. Even among those populations, which are fully supportive, still a 50 50 proposition, its not like theyre overlapping reject the vaccine, and even the hardest for trump, people those who tell pollsters they are republicans, and are trump people first, as opposed to Republican Party members first, theyre at 47 vaccinated, and are planning to get it as soon as they can. There are millions of people, who are conservative, who like Donald Trump, who own magnet, gear who voted for trump, and they got vaccinated, they want to get vaccinated, i think the majority are on the rise. Were talking about a small fraction of americans who are driving this. In honestly, they are a huge part of why we are where we are. They are a huge reason, this chart looks the way it does, and ultimately, those yahoos who booed the former president , when he almost apologetically almost, said theres an effective vaccine that you could prevent you from dying or getting a horrible disease, theyre the ones, who have managed to seize a veto on covid policy, for a huge part of america. And a columnist for the washington banner. He where he reports on rightwing politics. Kristen, the polling on all of this stuff, is complicated, you can slice and invasive a bunch of, ways i think its a little bit of a moving, target but i do think that when you talk about vaccines, it is still a healthy majority of americans, either got it or want to, and thats not even that controversial, its really a subset of one part of america, and it extends across political ideologies, but particular strong in this part of the Republican Party, that is kind of an outlier. Im very grateful youve shown all that data about a majority of trump voters, who say vaccinated, i think so often the conversation around vaccines, in our politics, inflate peoples views on the vaccine itself, with policies like vaccine mandates, you can look at the modern gop, and you can see about a third of republicans, maybe a little less, outright say, im not getting vaccinated, i dont want to know thank you, but most, theyve either said theyve gotten it themselves, theyre open to, if they dont think its a bad idea, where you do lose them is on mandates. Part of that is early on in the pandemic, you had this crisis moment, where people, ideological priorities got set aside. I liken it almost to how immediately after 9 11, a lot of people said, a lot of people might have said i dont feel like we should invite a foreign country even for foreign national security. Early and covid a lot of republicans said, im fine with lockdowns. Im fine with masks. As the crisis grand, as we went from 15 days to slow the spread to 15 weeks to 15 months, that atrophied, and now you have a lot of republicans who are interested in protecting themselves, but not interested in governing telling anyone with they have to do. I think its important though, theres a few different segments, here theres an opposition to mandates requirements, and even that is not again, we should be clear, theres a lot of republicans who are for it. This is not like some overwhelming crazy. But then when it has festered, and this is the problem, is in a numerical sense, if we want to actually stand up against the virus, we have the vaccines to do, it because God Bless America were sitting on Tens Of Millions of vaccines. You need thresholds of compliance, and a vaccination, that are hard to get, with this hardcore crew. And yes i feel like one of the things we saw, not to get to biblical here, but theres a little bit of lake with trump looking like a pilot, where is it gonna know when you guys want, you want the vaccine, you know on the vaccine . Like hes catering to the crowd, hes not telling them this stuff is not coming from, him its coming from somewhere else. I think that such an important point. While we focus on trump understand is, on greg of it, when we focus on these villains, we have to recognize, that this kind of antivaccination hysteria, has deep historical roots in the right. Goes back to the 19th century, where you start encountering terms like medical journey, medical liberty, natural immunity. And then its conflated with this idea that white people somehow through their good, jeans theyre very good genes as trump would put, it have immunity. So trump, desantis, abbott all these folks are pulling on a rightwing populous, and a religious threat in american life. And pulling horribly into the presence. They didnt invented they exploited it. Heres where the rubber hits the road when i think about these different factions, when i have observed in a public politicians, desantis as an example, in abbott too, it wasnt like they were going around being antivaxxers, they were normally pro vaccine, but they werent really putting their back into it, i know what it looks like when Ron Desantis comes to write an issue, ive seen it, i know what its like when Greg Abbott wants to write an issue. Ive seen that. This is not an issue they wanted a ride. It wasnt. They were doing a bunch, vince they werent showing up on cameras. They werent Going On fox news, because within their faction, there was this division, that they would rather avoid the confront. I disagree with you a little bit on. That desantis actually took blow back early in the pandemic, because he set up a bunch of Vaccination Stations in public, a very popular Grocery Store in my state of florida. He focus very heavily on seniors. And he got flak because originally the guidelines said, youre not necessarily supposed to do it by age exposed to look at all these other categories. He pushed back on this idea, just a couple of weeks ago, shes running for the Governor S Race in arkansas. She put out of office and said please get this vaccine, i was pushed back a little bit that these republican politicians, have not been pushing the vaccine. I disagree and i disagree for this reason. Its a difference between being on the record, in deciding its something you want to do. Weve seen republican politicians, do the thing where they really go out, day after day, to make sure there stay is vaccine. There are republican governors who have done that. But i think, the Veto Power of the heckler, the hecklers veto, that we saw from the crowd, it cows everyone, thats the thing, they are scared of those people, they do not want to get crossed with them,. Thats the militancy of todays Republican Party. When we look at antivaccination sentiment, and qanon, qanon, which already have a deep fear big pharma, in this idea that elites were harvesting strange substances in trying to put it in their, bodies are our bodies, are these conspiracy theories, qanon is a fringe movement, its a movement as we know in this point which drives Republican Party. What youre saying really resonates with me. A member, moderna to republican, but i appreciate my governor phil scott, for giving me, the vaccination defense, in the nation. Not listening to qanon. Not listening to that single heckler in the crowd. That was great, thank you both, i really appreciate it. Tonight the Pfizer Vaccine becomes the first covid shot to get full fda approval. Today the Food And Drug administration granted pfizer full approval for its coronavirus vaccine, for people 16 and up. Thats nine months the Pfizer Vaccine has been distributed under whats called Emergency Use Authorization. Something granted in Public Health emergencies, like a pandemic. More than 200 Million doses of that vaccine, the Pfizer Vaccine, have been administer, shots in arms. Now, with more time in data, the fda is giving the vaccine the strongest and dorman a drug can get, immediately following this announcement, the pentagon moved to require all Military Service members to be vaccinated. It is a blanket requirement. Also, new York City public schools, the largest School District in the, country requiring shots for all staff and schools. Not just teachers. Basically every adult in that building. In the question now is, with this full approval, will it pave the way for further vaccine requirements, and, will it convince more people to get vaccinated . Doctor wang days been nominated u. S. Agency for intellectual development, its a so a Staff Writer for the New Yorker, and Blockage Doctor Julie marina, executive director. Executive Vice President of a johnson foundation, firmly served as commissioner for the department of Public Health. Together they served and president Bidens Transition Covid19 advisory board, and they both join me now. Doctor maria, let me start with you, and the sort of technical question here. You never want to be the guy at the, Barges Bile would summiteer with these people, why dont they approve it. But i felt a little bit that way, about the fda process. Like it does seem a little weird there is this Emergency Use Authorization, theres literally hundreds of millions of shots going into arms, what is the difference, why now, what is this mean . Thats a great question chris. And i think you are not alone and asking this question at this point, the Emergency Use Authorization is something thats only used in a time of Public Health emergency, like a pandemic, in that situation, the fda will review the vaccines, and not look at them for his long a period of time before they actually approve them for use, so whats different about what happened today, is that the vaccines is been studied for six months, which allowed them to look at more safety data more efficacy. In addition to that, the fda actually looked at the manufacturing processes and Chemistry Aspects of the vaccine, that were not looked at in greater detail, since the otherization was made. The key thing from my perspective is, look by issuing Emergency Use Authorization, we have saved lives. The use of the vaccine as a result of that approval as led to many many lives being saved. Doctor gone, day theres a question, if you hang out in vaccine skeptical Social Media Spaces which i sometimes do you out of curiosity, you will see that it is a fairly frequent talking point, this idea about Emergency Use Authorization. It does get invoked. You can hear from people who are vaccine hesitant. And i guess the real question, i kind of its open empirical question, about whether it matters. In terms of peace Ups Hesitancy and if it is a marginal set of people that would have not gotten it before but will now. I would agree. The effects on peoples changing peoples minds will be modest. There probably are some people who have been waiting for the approval before jumping in. For many people, it was more of an argument to make, and the goalpost off and move in these debates. So when she met the one goalpost, someone will push the Vaccine Hustle just move it further, the really big deal is when you outline, which is in many places, now that its approved, will feel much more comfortable in an institutional level, requiring vaccination, especially in places where people are at a lot of risk. Such as in public venues, or in Health Care in hospital settings. My own hospital, because we are holding off and mandating vaccination for everybody until approval. That is now coming out and will be underway. Its interesting you note, that this is been a surprising thing for me to learn, we had dr. Kahn surrounds the National Institutes Of Health and a few weeks ago, and they have obviously a functioning hospital there, its thousands of employees, and he made the point that at the National Institutes Of Health, they couldnt or were not requiring the vaccine for employees in that hospital until it reached full approval. Again, i found the logic there a little tenuous to be totally honest. But, how much of a difference does it make, maybe its just a beatific, or institutional comfort thing, but it sounds like this could be a big deal for employers, public institutions and the lake. Chris there is some greatness regarding whether it would be required before mandates could occur, although the equal employment opportunity commission, head waiting to say that mandates could occur, as long as the combinations were made for people with disabilities or reasons. There was still a reluctance to actually issue mandates. I think we are going to see in the coming days in, weeks increasing numbers of mandates, because we know, that mandates are actually highly effective in getting people vaccinated. Theres years and years of Expend Variance with childhood vaccines, as well as Health Care Hepatitis B vaccines in measles vaccines, they are incredibly effective in getting high rates of Coverage And Protection within our communities. I always think about someone i know, close to meet, who at some point, was required to get a Flu Vaccine, for the work that she was doing, and that was the, thing i was like oh, i knew the Flu Vaccine was out, there i figured it was, affected i was never a Flu Vaccine, person until that moment. Were sort of hit home, to me this is really important. And it did have an effect, in not just the individual, but in a broader kind of social expectation, on that specific vaccine. This is been a common part of Public Health, to go to schools, in order to prevent outbreaks of everything from diphtheria, to whooping cough, we have had effective nze regiment, that would never have worked, without some basic requirements, in order to get the levels high enough to eliminate these diseases. Weve seen measles come back, because of weakening in those categories this is a disease that is killing people, in nursing homes, hospitals. Who are at high risk, even when vaccinated, because of their immune resistance. There are settings where this is going to be very important. Its going to be really interesting to watch. Weve got the pentagon, sort of what the next few weeks or, wake and what happens those daily numbers. Doctor you have a great piece about Public Health, and mortality, and Life Expectancy in the New Yorker that you should. Checkout and doctor julie, thank you both. Thank you. As thousands more fully afghanistan each day, theres been a continued scrutiny over the evacuations of u. S. Citizens, have helped. Who should have protection, under a special visa process. According to one former Trump Way out official, theres something about the story we are missing. It goes back to the Trump Administration, as former immigration advisor Stephen Miller, that next. , that next. My hygienist cleans with a round head. And parked his black chevrolet pick up truck, on the sidewalk, outside the Library Of Congress thats. Right near the u. S. Capital. And supreme court. He went on a tirade about a coming revolution, he said he was a patriot, he threw money out of the window of his truck and demanded to speak with president Joe Biden, or he would blow up two and a half city blocks, with an explosive device. Congressional offices in nearby homes were evacuated amid a tense back and forth negotiation between the Man And Law enforcement. After about five hours of that, eventually surrendered peacefully. Good news there. Now, at first and i was on vacation at this point so i was monitoring the story in the periphery. Police said no bomb was found in the truck. But possible Bomb Making materials were collected. Which to be honest, is a big vague, but i came away from the story thinking, this was someone like sticking up a bank with the no in their finger in their pocket. No actual gun. But no thats not it. It was quite a bit more serious than that. In fact according to charging documents, he had threatened to use a Weapon Of Mass Destruction against a person in property in the united states. In a video from that morning, he was holding an old metal can, that appeared to have been fashioned into an explosive device. You can see it here in this image. And after his arrest, the canned was recovered on the front seat of the truck it was olden rusted. Ahead approximately 1 to 2 inches of an unknown powder in the bottom of it. A fabricated sugar was attached to the cop the can. So this isnt just about a bomb threat, in the guy as it before the government. It looks like, as far as we know, he had materials in his car that could be used to make explosives. Maybe he tried to make one in a justin work. This is of course, the monster that the Trump Administration created. Over the last four years particularly in the wake of the election. In facebook, in a live stream that took place before an after the standoff. This man ranted about you arent surprised to learn, Election Conspiracy saying quote once biden is out of office, democrats sitting down there in the jailhouse, our president will be Donald Trump. He also went on about lack of access to Health Care, claiming all those immigrants and afghan refugees, my wife goes to the doctor shes got cancer and they told her when cover anymore cause its cosmetics. Where is your insurance at biden and obama. He keep letting all these illegal mexicans in here, all these illegal immigrants in here for afghanistan, and youre giving it to them. Youre giving it to them. That rant, is essentially indistinguishable from what you could hear it a trump rally, or fox news, night in night out, in any number of rightwing websites. Who just go on there right now. The race is hysteria. The Zero Sum configuration. About Health Care being zerosum in some people get in some people dont. In the invading hordes and brown people are getting all the Health Care, in the socalled unvetted refugees. Its not just rhetoric, its deeper than that. Its been operationalize and our politics, and much more dangerously in our government. Which is a huge part of the story of why the airlift out of afghanistan has been so chaotic and fraud. It is in part, because we like Stephen Miller, whose views on immigration are shared apparently by the wouldbe palmer, wanted it that way. Just a moment ill talk to someone who worked in the Trump Administration, who was in the room when Stephen Miller turned racist area, that helped create this chaos. Thats right after this. Olivia troye, served as a top aide to Vice President pence, where she saw the ability to bring afghan translators and other refugees to this country, hollowed out under millers watch. Quote, there were Cabinet Meetings about this where Stephen Miller would petal his racist hysteria about iraq and afghanistan. He and his enablers across government would undermine anyone who worked on solving this special Visa Issue by devastating the system at department of Homeland Security in the state department. Olivia troye joins me now. A lot of people read what you had to. Right which you had to say over the weekend, with a lot of interesting things myself. And doing some reporting on this, ive sort of come back into the story, the special immigrant visa, has been a huge obstacle here. Can you just explain what were talking about . And why it is so central to understand the story. Its critical, because what it is, its a special programs that aside for people who really assist us when were on the ground, translators, interpreters, people that work for the u. S. Government directly, whether its the embassy, or other operations. The military intelligence, community. Its a special set of visas, set aside for people who work with us in these programs. Theres also other programs that is cyst with people who are helping, programs people that are u. S. Funded on the ground. Theres also the pizza program, that you dont hear about, it talk about refugees, which is also assists in other lanes. That program comes to an end, like in iraq, they qualify for p2s p2s. You have this bureaucratic category of folks that were translators who worked with american ngos, people who have both helped the u. S. , been allies, but also have credible fear of reprisal, when and now the government has fallen to the taliban. And you are saying that even years ago, miller was focused on shrinking and getting rid of the category, essentially deconstructing it so you can use it as a category to get people in. He doesnt in a very crafty way. Whats happening here is probably with the public Star Red some reporting about the refugee ceiling, that was being decreased on a yearly basis, under the Trump Administration, you see the travel, Ordered Anti Refugee where they want to settlement, at the very beginning at the start of an administration. All of these things contribute to a scenario, of the reduction of resources, a reduction of resources at state and dhs. You see this start developing. The reason i put my, tweet is because i was getting so upset at watching the images, of these people who really have done and the narrative is start to surface. That they dont belong. Here that these people dont belong here. Which is such Stephen Miller rhetoric that i heard repeatedly during my time working around the Trump Administration. Part of it, to one of the things, its such a frustrating Reality Weve seen, i think the biden administrations share significant blame, as using this route, which many people warned them, this maddening bureaucratic bottleneck, its been unstuck a bit. Youre seeing Tens Of Thousands of folks lifted. Out but that bottleneck, my understanding is that, in some Ways Miller was the architect of the bottleneck. He did not want the bottle the flow. He wanted to create, and sort of interrupt the process sees, as arcane as they are, by which these kinds of people can be brought in. This is already as you said a very challenging and cumbersome process, let me tell you, the vetting that goes into the people that apply for these visas, this is some of the most stringent vetting in the national security system. Its well known that its a very tough process to get through. What happened under Stephen Millers watch, is that the people that do the, vetting in the processing, they start to become even more cumbersome, and it becomes more challenging. So you can see the narrative coming together, where he is clearly going out of his way. Heres the bigger issue. During these Cabinet Meetings. There was discussions about the p2 especially when it comes to afghanistan and iraq. Where generals unintelligent community, where we pushed back, and this narrative. In so we say okay, the decision was made to prioritize these populations. But when you look at the numbers, the numbers speak for themselves. When you see that not many make it through the system. Not many are issued. In so it may have been said, that we prioritize them, but that is not exactly how it played out what happened. Youre saying even under the last administration, there be agreement to prioritize, them and then the operational part of that would not happen. Exactly. Thats where we realized, those working in this process, that we are making Phone Calls trying to understand whats happening, here but we clearly know, and this is where you get the Bully Mission the willing behind the scenes, trying to figure out how we walk around eggshells, whos known to be a very powerful figure in the white house. I will tell, you pompeo, you will see the reports on refugees, where some of that language this Stephen Miller rhetoric, that he inserts there, that just tells you the power that this man had. Olivia troye, thanks so much for having us. Dont go anywhere, theres one person in the senate to talk to about tonight about the situation afghanistan, what congress should investigate, its senator chris murphy. He joins me. Next senator chris murphy. He joins me. Next according to the pentagon, as of right now there are 200 Military Aircraft falling nonstop, evacuating afghans and u. S. Citizens out of afghanistan. Nearly 40,000 people have been evacuated, since the taliban took kabul, less than two weeks ago. 16,000 Leaving Afghanistan Over 24 hour period, this weekend. Obviously a massive Undertaking Military planes, private Air Carriers alike taking part. All other partner countries helping. Tens of thousands getting out of the airport in kabul, to destinations like the u. S. Airbase in germany. Since sunday, at least five flights have landed in Dallas International Airport in d. C. According to the pentagon. Like this united Airlines Flight arriving from germany this morning. Many in congress, including democrats, are calling for investigations into how the withdrawal is being conducted. Senator chris murphy, democrat of connecticut, sits on the committee that will announced it will investigate the circumstances around the withdrawal, including the trump and ministrations deal with the taliban. He thinks the committee needs to look beyond even that. He joins me now. Senator first lets start with the most recent, developments in the last three or four days. It does seem that the pace, the efficacy of the airlift, has Impression Lee approved. And were getting more people out. What is your reaction to that . These images, are heartbreaking. To watch babies being lifted over walls, to hear the stories of afghan families, people who helped us and the last 20 years, having difficulty getting to the airport, having their lives threatened. All that being said, the numbers are starting to speak for themselves. We have now taken around 50,000 people out, just in the nineties since the country fell. And whether or not we should have known, that the Government And Military were going to collapse overnight, we have put this all together in a period of 9 to 10 days. I think its hard to label any of this is success, it is extraordinary, the effort that is underway. I guess what i worry, is that we are going to allow the people who let us into this war, to stay for 20 years, try to make the world in the country believe that there was some way to conduct this effort, in a way that did not look chaotic. I think when the government in the military fall overnight, like they did, there is no way to avoid some of the chaos that we are seeing. And i do applaud all those that are involved, forgetting to the numbers we see today. 10,000 people every day. Being airlifted out. I want to follow up on. That first i want to talk about, theres an intel briefing, over in the house side, and some of those members coming out of that briefing. Jason crow, said that after, he doesnt think its possible to get everybody out by August 31st deadline. Urging biden to keep troops there, despite with the taliban is saying. Which is basically look, we are sort of going along with this. Its not like theyve been handing people roses in water. But they have not been pulling off largescale attacks. Theyre saying, that changes after the august 31. Crew saying, these are our people. I dont know, what do you think about this idea . About the 31st. And that is a deadline . I dont think we should let the taliban decide when we stop airlifting americans, or those who are most closely helping us, out of the country. Of course, it would be better to get all of this done by the 31st. But it may be, that we will have to call the Talibans Bluff here. I leave that to the judgment of the administration. But i would certainly be willing to support u. S. Forces staying there for as long as it takes. This is an essential mission, for the united states of america. Not leaving any of our people behind. Its simply will have to have a hard discussion, about how many afghans we can pull, out what is our obligation. Obviously, there were 300,000 people fighting for the Afghan Army at the time that we left. We cannot bring all of them out of the country, but certainly those that were working with us closely, we should, and it may take us beyond the end of this month to do that. He said something before that resignations with my reaction to watching this unfold, and again ive been away. But, i sort of feel like this is what it looks like when you lose a war. No one wants to say that. No one wants to utter those words. But we all know at the images of saigon, the helicopter, the u. S. Embassy, was in the reason it happened is because the army we were fighting, defeated the army we are supporting. Quite quickly. In this case, the army we were fighting, defeated the army we were supporting, after 20 years. And about as much time as it probably wouldve back in 2002 frankly. And i think that that is the fundamental, core of the thing here. That people dont want to reckon with. Of course, there was going to be chaos. Of course there is going to be panic. On the streets of kabul. After their Government And Military fell apart, overnight. Now, again, there will be a question whether we should have seen that coming. But the people of afghanistan did not see that coming, and so when they heard that the united states of america was airlifting people out, of course there was a rush to the airport. And so, i worry, here that the same people who sort of Fed Us this story, for 20 years, that there was some magical way to train the Afghan Army to be able to fight for itself. They are now sort of feeding us the story that there shouldve been a way for us to withdraw, and in the wake of the collapse of the Government And Military, to avoid this kind of chaos. The scenes again are devastating to watch. Im just not sure there is any way to avoid, given what happened. Given the fact that our 20 Year Occupation in Training Mission was a total complete failure. When that came to light, i think it was inevitably going to be a chaotic situation on the ground. And were trying to manage it. Senator chris murphy. On the foreign affairs committee. Thank you so much. Thank you. That is all in for this evening. The Rachel Maddow shows right now.
