People from kabul is going to be hard and painful No Matter when it started, when it began. It would have been true if we had started a month ago or a month from now. There is no way to evacuate this many people without Pain And Loss of heartbreaking images you see on television. Its just a fact. New polling from nbc News Today finds that only one in four americans approve of the president s handling of the afghanistan crisis. With three in five americans of the mind that our nations longest war was ultimately not worth it. And political insiders are questioning just how much of a hit the president has taken on Capitol Hill over afghanistan, even as as even some democratic allies have condemned his response at a time when his party needs all his capital to move forward on voter protections. As the civil Rights Community prepares this week for the national voting Rights March that Martin Luther King iii and i as president of national Action Network will lead to Capitol Hill this coming saturday. And its there, the hill, that we want to start with the most timely guests possible. Joining me now, California Congresswoman Barbara lee, who sits on the house appropriations committee. Congresswoman lee, our thanks for joining us Tonight. 20 years ago i remember it because you distinguished yourself. You were the lone House Voice and the lone House Vote against Military Force in afghanistan. You now chair the house Appropriations Subcommittee on state and foreign operations. What is your reaction to what we just heard moments ago from President Biden on the u. S. Commitment to afghanistan at this point . Reverend al, thank you so much for giving me a chance to be with you this afternoon. First of all, what i voted against was the authorization that established that any president could use force in perpetuity. It was 60 words and it was a Blank Check and there was no way i could vote for that because i knew there was no Military Solution in afghanistan and i also understand we cant go around the World And Nation build. Im really very, you know i guess supportive i would say of the President And Everything that he has done. He has been very clear about his decision and why it was necessary to begin the withdrawal. But hes also been very clear in talking about how he has owned this whole effort in terms of the evacuation and it has not gone well. I dont think anyone, not even himself, agrees with that. He said earlier its dangerous, its perilous, its unprecedented. But i do believe that what he says he means, and that is he is going to get every american, every african excuse me, afghan ally, every Woman And Child and everyone who needs to get out of afghanistan who has supported the american presence there. He will do that. Including our nato and european allies. Let me go to this, congresswoman. You had your Colleague Terry Sewell of alabama with us Last Night. She was adamant that the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to pass the house this week. And as i mentioned, Voting Rights demonstrators will be held in many cities saturday. We, martin and i doing the major one On Saturday in washington going from black Lives Matter Plaza to the capitol. Congresswoman sewell, chairman of the caucus, baby and others will be joining Martin Luther King and i and others leading the voting Rights March in washington that day right to the capitol. It would seem that public and political pressure specifically defending Voting Rights is a concerted effort as it has been. And yet i acknowledge theres no guarantee it will be enough to change republican minds let alone votes. Do you think this legislation can pass where hr1 did not, congresswoman, and that we should put the pressure on a carveout or The End of the filibuster if it passes the house this week our objective of the march would be to address that. Thank you, Reverend Al. And its because of your leadership and the leadership of the Peoples Movement thats going to allow our Voting Rights and our democracy to be protected. I agree Congresswoman Sewell has been a champion and is very clear on the strategy as it it relates to the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. I believe its going to pass the house this week. So its not about the house. It really is about the senate. Of course i have always said that we need to get rid of the filibuster. Hr1 also passed the house. This gets dark money out of politics along with other efforts to address Voter Suppression. So we have got to understand, we have the house, we have the senate and we have the White House. And so its going to be the power of the people. Its going to be the pressure. Its going to be the outside movements thats going to get the senate to act so that we can restore our Voting Rights and stop these Voter Suppression laws. This is a real test of our democracy. And those who believe in democracy in the senate will support both bills. Reverend al, can i just take a minute to wish Reverend Jesse Jackson and mrs. Jacqueline jackson oh, yeah. A speedy recovery. Heartfelt prayers. And a heck of a lot of love from myself and from my Congressional District, the 13th Congressional District that includes oakland and berkeley. For a speedy recovery. Absolutely. Im going to do something on that later in the show. I still have a picture in my office of you and Reverend Jackson and myself and Danny Glover at the elections in South Africa in 1994. Right. Weve done a lot of stuff all over the world together, all of us. Let me ask you this, congresswoman. Nbc news has america giving Joe Biden mostly positive marks approaching labor day. But still hes taken what appears to be his first hit. His Approval Rating now down four points from april to 49 . And largely due to the resurgence of covid19. Where just Ore Half of america now approved of his response. A 16point Drop over the last four months. Are you at all worried that the spike in covid19 cases will impede the democrats agenda as we head into The End of the year . The president , first of all, and the democrats have been very clear on the fact we have got to address the Coronavirus And Crush this virus. The Delta Variant of course has wreaked havoc on the american people. Look at what has happened in so many of our xlunts, black and brown communities around the country. But let me tell you, Reverend Al. It is so important that the antivaxx messages, somehow weve got to overcome them. Because this is what you see in the confusion around those who believe that vaccinations and that masking are not important to save lives. Its a very arrogant in many ways position. So we have to make sure our voice is heard and that we get the message out, that we have got to get the vaccines and that we have got to stay masked and do exactly what our health protocols, what the biden administration is suggesting that we do. Its so important that we pass this Infrastructure Bill and the jobs plan this week. This will again show that the biden administration definitely working for the people. Hes creating more jobs. Were lifting children out of poverty by passing the child tax credit. Were addressing climate change, environmental injustice. And so this president and this administration working with House Democrats and hopefully soon with some republicans, were working to make sure that peoples economic security and that their Health Security is intact. Of course the president is going to have all kinds of issues that are going to come up. Hes the president. But hes owning it. Hes being honest about it. He has a lot of integrity. And were working with them to make sure we get Voting Rights passed, protect our democracy, crush this virus, and make sure that everyone has a Goodpaying Job and lift our children out of poverty. And that segues beautifully to my next guest. Thank you, congresswoman Barbara Lee, because joining me now is Congressman Mondaire jones, democrat of New York. Hes also the Deputy Whip of the congressional progressive caucus. Congressman, your chamber is heading back to washington to forge ahead with the president s economic agenda. House Speaker Pelosi could hold a procedural vote as soon as tomorrow on the bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation recently passed by the senate. Is congress in good standing right now to get this done . Well, rev, thanks for having me on the show again. This is not just the president s agenda. It is an agenda for the people as House Democrats say. It contains the Reconciliation Package that is a number of extremely popular bipartisan provisions including making childcare affordable, expanding medicare to include dental, vision and hearing, and engaging in the longsuffering but urgent effort of Climate Action to save the planet from climate catastrophe. So i am optimistic that with the american people supporting these provisions on a bipartisan basis that we will be unified as a house democratic caucus moving into this new week and that we will pass not just the John Lewis Voting Rights Act but also a Budget Reconciliation Bill so we can begin the hard work of drafting our own package over here in the house. Now, you went exactly what i want to ask. There are nine House Centrists who are threatening to hold up the passage of the budget. They are insisting the house pass the bipartisan Infrastructure Bill first. Before moving on to the democratonly Reconciliation Package. We know your House Speaker is moving towards approving the Spending Plan without a republican vote. Do you agree with your leaders plan given the narrow divide within your party right now . Well, i want to be clear that it is not a moderate position to oppose medicare expansion, which is supported by 90 of the american people. Im thinking now of my grandmother, who had to work well past the age of retirement because she couldnt afford to pay for medical procedures not fully covered by medicare. At a Town Hall with senior citizens in my district a few weeks ago. And they were enormously excited about this provision among others. It is not a moderate position oppose childcare, especially given what we have learned during this pandemic, that it is indeed infrastructure. So as with so many other things in a family, there are sometimes sometimes there are disputes. Right . Sometimes people throw temper tantrums. But we unify at The End of that for the people. And that is precisely what i expect will happen this week and moving forward. I think the speaker has shown enormous leadership in supporting this agenda that you describe is the president s agenda but also one that is shared by the american people. Im optimistic that these nine conservative democrats will change their minds and move forward with us lockstep as we rise to the occasion in this really once in a Generation Moment where we have unified control of the federal government to do big things. As we mentioned, House Democrats have introduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Bill announced by your colleague Terri Sewell who we had on the show yesterday. Youve been involved in that. Youve put legislation in around voting. And youll be speaking at the March On Washington On Saturday. But the Lewis Legislation is viewed as the last chance to save our Voting Rights. I dont know that people understand how serious this is. Its the last chance that under republican assault this year weve seen states change all over the country. We know there are some senate holdouts in the way, congressman. What do you think is needed to take this bill across the Finish Line once and for all in the senate . We need to see leadership from the White House on this. As my colleague Barbara Lee mentioned earlier, the house has already passed the for the people act and this week it will pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Which contains provisions that i authored that would restore section 12 of the voting Rights Act, for example. Along with Ruben Gallego we introduced a bill thats now included in this legislation. But if we dont get the president to come forth and say weve got to at least make an exception to the filibuster for constitutional rights like Voting Rights, then i dont expect Manchin Or Sinema to change their mind on this. As you noted, our democracy is in crisis and it faces its greatest test since jim crow. We cannot afford to get this wrong. Now, while i still have you, quickly a question about afghanistan. You recently tweeted your support of the president s actions in the country, calling it political courage in standing up to the military industrial complex. Quoting you saying that, you say we must do the right thing by the afghan people after a total taliban takeover. How do we do right by these people in your opinion, now that our troops have withdrawn . Well, we have to make sure we are safely facilitating the departure of people who were allies of the united states, who risked Life And Limb and who are in Grave Danger right now if we dont give them a new place where they can enjoy safety, whether that is in the united states or in another country that is allied with us. This is our obligation to afghans. And of course we have to make sure as the president noted that any american whos currently in afghanistan who wants to return to the u. S. Is able to safely do so. That is our continuing obligation until such time as we have addressed both of those things. Thank you, Congressman Mondaire jones. Coming up on Politics Nation, theres a lot happening in the world right now. But our right to vote is still under attack. Im going to tell you how to Rise Up and fight back. And later, a new documentary about the resiliency of new York City could come from none other than spike lee. He joins me live later this hour. Dont miss it. But first, my colleague Melissa Rehberger with some of the latest on the tropical storm. Milissa. Thank you, rev. We are continuing to track tropical Storm Henri. The storm is slowing cowan as it moves inland over southern new england. President biden in the last hour saying fema is standing by ready to respond to damage caused by high winds and flooding and widespread Power Outages. The storm made landfall in Rhode Island just after noon eastern time, packing high winds that knocked out power it to more than 80,000 customers in that state. Close to 4,000 people in massachusetts. And 2,000 people on long island. But the Massachusetts Governor fears that as the Storm Tracks slower across his State Power outages could spike into the hundreds of thousands. For this weeks Rise Up i want to return once more to the very foundation of our democracy, the fundamental right to vote, a right that has been under systemic attack from republicans for years. But those attacks have really caught fire in the gopcontrolled State Legislatures in the past few months. Our best hope to keep this democracy from burning to the ground lies in federal congressional action. We need voting Rights Legislation to safeguard our rights. Republicans in the senate keep blocking those crucial bills whenever the Majority Leader tries to bring them to the floor for a vote. You but we saw just last week that the senate can get things done. A bipartisan group of senators including 19 republicans passed a 1 Trillion Infrastructure Bill. And then all 50 democrats passed a Budget Reconciliation Measure for a much larger infrastructure investment. This map shows 18 states that have passed restrictive Voting Legislation as of last month. And nearly every state has had similar bills introduced. So since the senate has shown that it can actually get things done, its time to double down on voting rice. State legislators from texas have been ringing the proverbial Fire Alarm on Voting Rights in washington for weeks and have watched as republicans in their Home State lobbied for their arrest when they returned. All for their actions is trying to stop the restrictive Voting Bill in one of the hardest states to vote in in the country. And though three democrats returned to the state capitol, ostensibly to help mitigate the covid surge in their case, republicans are planning to force the Voter Restriction Bill through the texas democrats remain in washington, while they push it through, and they released a statement saying they felt betrayed but that their resolve was not broken. We should all be so brave. So what can you do to advance the cause of Voting Rights in your community, your state, and across america . Start local. And work your way up the ladder. There are Voter Advocacy groups in every one of the 50 states, and they can use all the volunteers they can find. Then find out what your elected officials on the local, state and federal level have been up to and whether they are fighting for Voting Rights or trying to suppress them. Make sure they know youre paying attention. You can also join Martin Luther King iii and Andrea King and myself and national Action Network and over 100 Sponsoring Organizations as we March On Washington next saturday, august 28th, from black Lives Matter Plaza to the capitol and National Mall to demand federal action on Voting Rights. The assault on Ballot Box Excess is a fivealarm fire, and its time we start acting like it. We can douse the flames of suppression with the power of collective action. Joining me now is Maya Rocky Moore Cummings former chair of the Maryland Democratic Party and founder, Ceo And President of global policy solutions. And rena shah, former republican Strategist And Founder and principal of relax holdings. I want to start with afghanistan, with the humanitarian crisis currently unfolding even as the last republican president did everything he could to stop afghan allies from getting the visas they were promised, several republican governors have already stated publicly that they will resettle afghan refugees in their states. Maya, does this represent a significant rift in the party . How do we thread the needle between nativism and criticizing Bidens Approach in afghanistan . Yeah, its been amazing to me to hear republicans talking about how much they care about afghanistan and the afghanis, what happens to the people who have helped The Americans there. They have actually flipped. Under the Trump Administration they were pretty much silent when trump set the timeline that would have laid a Booby Trap frankly for Joe Biden in terms of getting out of afghanistan by may 1st. And now theyre talking about what a daft it is and how they would have supported this and that. The reality is republicans are basically, theyre split. So youve got the basically white Supremacist Wing of the party who is not in favor of any form of immigration and then youve got those traditional folks who support the military and they are actually out there, you know, stating these things about afghanistan. So there is attention. But ive got to tell you this. If they taste blood in the water and they are unifying around the notion of selling it to their base, that Joe Biden is incompetent and there needs to be something done by changing the majority in the midterms, and so its important that democrats recognize this is a threat. Now, within the republican party you have several figures in a race to see in a race to the bottom really in order to see who can be the most like trump in the hopes of gaining the 2024 nomination. At significant detriment to responsible governing. I would say that republican governors ron desantis, kristi noam, and Greg Abbott are the most prominent examples. Rena, will trumps biggest fans go for a cheap imitation . And what happens if those trump wannabes, if trump himself runs again . Well, we certainly hope, those of us in the gop who were opposed to trump for so many years and still found his presidency to be the most Black Mark that weve had in modern American History, we hope that trump will find his way to the sidelines. He needs to. But right now theres nobody encouraging that. In fact, these rallies. In places like alabama where we see that there are no icu beds available. Covid disinformation as pushed out by the Trump Administration and mr. Trump himself makes us realize how much these governors continue to thrive off of pushing the narrative they thought worked. And its nonsensical, rev, because its the type of thing where you look and say doesnt time change at snoouds doesnt data change attitudes . Doesnt the very fact that these people who are unvaccinated when they get sick they go to hospitals to get the care from medical professionals who they have not listened to for months on end. We cannot add it up properly. So what we have to look at right now is holding these governors accountable one by one. Desantis right now has seen is seeing a fall from grace. For many months he was hailed as a hero, somebody who showed strong leadership, didnt fully give in to his impulses, to embrace trumpism in its entirety. But now weve seen the pendulum has swung and we are seeing some irritability amongst gop voters in the southern part of the state as florida is seeing such great surges under the Delta Variant. So i hope now we are in a moment because of the complications of the Delta Variant where we will see a pushback against people like abbott. I dont think well see it with people like kristi noem. She sees an incredibly high Favorability Rating in her state. So we have to do what is sensible and push back where we see public opinion changing. Let me turn now to coronavirus. After months of ignoring pleas to advocate for the vaccine, the former president finally did just that Last Night in alabama. Listen to this. I believe totally in your freedoms. I do. Youve got to do what youve got to do. But i recommend taking the vaccines. I did it. Its good. Take the vaccines. But thats no, thats okay. Thats all right. Youve got your freedoms. But i happened to take the vaccine. If it doesnt work, youll be the first to know. But you do have your freedoms. You have to keep you have to maintain that. You have to maintain that. And youve got to get your kids back to school. Those were dedicated trump fans packed into a maskless rally in a state where hospitals are overrun with covid patients booing the former President Trump for suggesting they take the vaccine. Maya, has trump lost control of the mob he created . I think that trump was equivocating like he always does, and i think that it was important that he did speak out in favor of the vaccine. But notice that he backed off as soon as he heard some mumbling in the audience. So we have to realize that yes, he did create this monster that we are dealing with across the country with Vaccine Skeptics basically refusing to actually, you know, get inoculated and then causing the continued spread of coronavirus. So weve got to get a handle on this. There have to be more republicans who are willing to step up, confront the other republican governors who are actually to me actually putting forth genocidal policies by trying to preept children from wearing masks in schools and prevent localities from actually exercising their rights to actually use proven public health methods. This is another Fracture Line within the gop that needs to be fixed and it needs to be fixed now if were ever going to get out of this coronavirus tragedy. Before we go, briefly i want to touch again on Voting Rights. Three democrats have returned to texas, giving the state republicans the quorum they need to pass their suppressive Voting Bill. Their colleagues released a statement saying they are betrayed and heartbroken but their resolve is strong and this fight is not over. Rina, briefly, will this finally Cop Vince democratic holdouts in the senate that they need to act now on this voting Rights Issue . I certainly think the pressure is on. And i do think now that the Infrastructure Bill passed and the infrastructure issues are off the table at the moment we have seen a cleareyed approach in the senate to say what can we do here. And i think thats bringing in senator manchin, for example, in talking about the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. I mean, we have got to talk about what is possible. Youll hear republicans push back and continue to say the federal government should not control our elections. But we need to show empirical data of how the states have screwed things up in such a way that truly our democracy is at risk if our senators dont act. Absolutely. And i think we are two steps further ahead than we were even two months ago. So i am encouraged that democrats in the senate will act and act soon. Weve got to keep it moving in the right direction. Two steps is good but its not home yet. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings and rina shah, thank you both for being with us. After the break im joined by The One And Only spike lee. Well get into his latest project about the challenges and triumphs of new York City. But first lets turn back to my colleague Milissa Rehberger with todays other top news stories. Milissa . I think its important for the audience to understand ahead of this Tonight'>Series Premiere Tonight that this project is not necessarily about 9 11 or 2021 1 2 but as you say but rather its the last 20 years in this city and what its gone through and to an extent the nation because of this city. I worked with my colleagues, we worked over a year on this Epic Mini series, this eight hours total. Four nights. Its going to be two hours each. And particularly my sisters and brothers of the greatest city of the world, new York City. I want to play another clip from the film, spike, then come back and get some context from you. I knew i was going to get it. At one point a quarter of my workforce was out with covid. Weve lost in the Fire Department 14 people so far to covid, five of which are ems. Now, as i said, this film really connects the defining tragedies of this city over two decades. How do you view what covid has done to this city, as someone who was here in 9 11 . Well, to be honest, i was in l. A. On September 11th. I flew to l. A. Two days before. So the night of September 11th i got the last train out of l. A. The last train. And i arrived back in New York two days later, friday afternoon. But again, rev, i really kind of stay away from telling people what to think because i respect their intelligence. But i will say this. There are so many things, themes, people that connect 9 11 to today, and it shows the best of new York City. Weve gone through hell and high water, but weve come through. Thats what we do. Thats New York. Thats what we do. And i hope thats the one thing people get. And i really i hear this crazy noise, new York Citys dead, im moving. Thats some b. S. Because again and again and again. New York Governor pataki says in this piece that he heard New York was dead on september 12th, 2001. And so, you know, we take our lumps, and like the champs we are we lift ourselves off the canvas, put our hands on the rope and get back in there fighting. Now, we havent heard you on with us since donald trumps electoral defeat. Are you breathing oh, you mean Agent Orange, president Agent Orange . Are you breathing easier, using your term now, that Agent Orange is out of the White House . Yes. And again, not trying to make light of this but i gave my beautiful wife and i, we gave a benefit for Barack Obama at our house. You were there. It was crowded. I wanted to get some air. And Obamas Car was in front, parked in front of my house. So i walked up to the limousine and i saw a guy in the back with an Attache Case strapped to his wrist. And that was the football. I always thought this is something that didnt exist. When the president of the united states leaves the White House, the football has to be within 100 feet. Right. And thats where you press the nuclear code. Every night this guy was in the White House i said a prayer, reverend. I was hoping that the generals gave him the wrong code. 1234, something like that. Ive got to ask you this.
