Earlier this morning we were getting hit by Heavy Rain and high winds but the winds have intensified extremely. I want to show you, though, how much things are blowing around. You might see the light pole behind me shaking. This is Ocean Road and it is blocked off. It is a dangerous situation. You see the waves crashing along the wall. There is a little bit of spillover and that is what folks need to avoid. You do see some folks walking around taking this all in. Its probably a good idea to stay at home. Right now 8,000 people are without electricity including ourselves. We lost power about two hours ago. We can expect the number to go up throughout the day. We are getting hit by these extreme Wind Gusts. Were in the thick of it now and its expected to intensify the next hour or so before henri moves on out of here. Flooding might be a problem. The governor is expected to give another update at 4 00 as he assesses the damage. A big concern for folks sorry, alex. Struggling to stand here. Power outages are a big concern. If you do have the time to go out to get any sort of batteries, generators, probably a good time to do it. Obviously the best advice is stay indoors once the storm passes, alex. Oh, my gosh, kathy. I am not going to subject you to keep talking. Hold on to that bannister or get inside some place safe right now. I can tell youre about to blow away. Thank you for that very strong representation of whats going on right there. As we head from there to Long Island and the conditions there lets go to meteorologist in West Hampton. It looks like the waters are higher than they normally would be. Windy. Not as bad as kathy is getting it, though. Reporter i promise you about two hours ago i was in the thick of things just like kathy. Its that Storm System making its way into that area fairly quickly. Its rushed out of Long Island. The Water Levels are very high. The great news now we have reduced visibility. When we were coming in around 4 00 a. M. And that lasted about six hours. Finally the sky is starting to clear. Reports we have some flooding going on across the street. Well show you that later in the show. Its still a Storm Surge forecast. Were still dealing with tropical Storm Warnings that are currently in place. I do want to show you some beach erosion. Its supposed to help in the area but thats just not happening. Its a wall of water. The wind has pushed it up across this area and the big concern right now i do think for West Hampton all the way into the Montauk Area is still that potential for Power Outages. You can see its still very windy out here. There are still outer bands that could be impacting the area. I know it seems kind of calm, but we dont want people to let their guard down. Absolutely not. We are not over with this yet. Janessa, thank you for keeping watch from West Hampton, New York. Henri is making quite the mess of Air Travel across the northwest. Flight aware shows 800 canceled flights and that number is expected to go up. The waves crashing into the coast of massachusetts are wicked like those in narragansett, buzzards bay, massachusetts. Waves 18 feet high. Kristen dahlgrendahlgren, Chopp Waters behind you. I can hear the wind. Talk about the Storm Surge. Is that the biggest threat from henri where you are . Reporter were not looking at the worst Case Scenario. High tide was at 8 30. Its gone out some. While there could still be significant Storm Surge on this side of the storm were not looking at that worst Case Scenario. You can see its pretty dry right now here. Were not getting quite the Winds Kathy is. Buzzards bay, the Fishing Boats are here at the dock. The ferries that normally go out of this area, alex, they are not running today. Theyve closed the harbor for safety. We have some fishermen up here that have been securing their boats making sure everything is tied down. A lot of people are checking the water to see what they can see out here. It is this sight. One of the other big concerns in the area will be Power Outages. Though we may not see the highest winds, this is an area in New England that has had one of the wettest summers on record, so we have a saturated ground. We have trees that still have all of their leaves. They can be like a sail as the Wind Gusts come through. And so thats a big concern that were going to be losing some trees, tree branches. Already here in New Bedford there are branches down and thousands of people without power. Back up here at the water you can see the wind is picking up. You can see the waves coming in and the water pushed as henri starts to come to shore to our west. So concerns on a couple of fronts with the Power Outages, perhaps with the Storm Surge and then to our west with some flooding as well as the Rain Totals Gear up. Were going to stay on the drier side of the storm, alex. I hope so. I appreciate your cameraman trying to wipe off The Rain thats gathered. Good for him or her. You take care. I watched you all day and you downgraded the official Down Grade from hurricane to tropical storm but that in no way means, oh, were fine. Were Out Of The Woods. No, it means less wind damage, less Power Outages and less Storm Surge. When the winds are lower, those are the impacts, nothing to do with what the Rainfall Impacts can be and thats the concern. As soon as this thing started weakening with the winds, i was thinking we could have millions without power by The End of the storm. Now probably hundreds of thousands. Right now 90,000 people are without power. 72,000 in Rhode Island and 13,000 in connecticut right now mostly confined to right where the storm is making Land Faum as we speak. I keep hitting fresh on my computer. Its near Watch Hill or stonington if they want to say it made landfall. Its windy. Its gusty but its not the type that will do a lot of damage. Well get trees and limbs and that will cause Power Outages but not a lot of structural damage which is fantastic. People dont have to worry about their roofs. Where do we go from here . We have our tropical Storm Warning that goes all through the state of connecticut. New York City has been dropped out of that. The winds will not be strong enough. Connecticut will be the concern for additional Power Outages. This is one of our computers that shows us where the storm will be and the heaviest rain. Northern new jersey and areas of the catskills, tremendous amounts of rainfall far from the center expected this afternoon, this evening. If were going to get any significant damage to any towns that are on streams or small rivers, then it weakens. And then it travels through connecticut as we go throughout the day today. By Tomorrow Morning this storm is all the way up in southern New Hampshire and drifts through areas of vermont, New Hampshire and through maine. The biggest concern is flooding, 36 Million people are included. Its already rained really hard around new York City, additional rain. We avoided a lot of Tree Damage and Power Outages. It still could be a devastating storm. Flooding is an issue. Let me ask you about the speed with which henri is traveling. Yesterday a lot of concern it was going to be a slow moving lingering seemingly incessant rainfall. Has it picked up speed, and is that a good thing . Actually its slowing down. You dont want tropical systems to slow down over you. All these squiggly lines are our different computer models. Let me show you what theyre playing out here. Were not positive. It could go to the right or the left of the black line. Thats through 11 00 p. M. Sunday. Look at what a few of those squiggly lines do. To the hudson valley, stop, turn around. Others continue to the north. From hartford over to Poughkeepsie And South of albany. That heavy Rain Band could sit over the catskills, Northern New Jersey for 1218 hours, and that is where we could see thats what were talking about. Thats the concern. What are you hearing . How many are hunkered down, or have they taken off and evacuated . No, they havent evacuated. However, all the bridges in Rhode Island closed about an hour ago. And because of that we wont have people in or people going out. We had closed our Beaches Yesterday and through the coordination of the City Manager who is also our public Safety Director and our ema chief, the fire chief, i think we have things pretty much under control. I kind of worry about i listened to the weatherman just now, and certainly we have a concern about the surge and the High Tides. We already passed one High Tide and all the dots, the water was right up on it. If we have rain and another High Tide with the Full Moon tonight, chances are were going to have some flooding throughout newport. Right now i know that theres approximately 3,000 homes out of electricity of the 14,000 residents. Wow. 3,000 people who are thinking no thank you and certainly after dealing with that headache. Our latest update continues to show that Rhode Island will feel heavy impacts of high wind, loss of power and flooding. We expect that to start happening over the next one to two hours. So your biggest concern is going to be flooding, the water surge, and what can you do about it except try to prepare . Our commanders on the ground have a wide variety of capabilities to defend the airfield against a potential terrorist attack. Americans and visa holders are told to stay away from the airport until they receive a verified invitation. This is the Scene Today outside the airport where thousands are waiting to get in. M. Eastern today. From there to josh ledderman. How is the administration reacting to some of these tremendous challenges that faces in afghanistan right now. Reporter they are pointing to the numbers to say they are succeeding in carrying off one of the largest airlift operations in history under incredibly dire and complicated circumstances. Some 3,900 people, as you pointed out, evacuated on 23 u. S. Military flights. Thats in addition to another 3,900 evacuated on additional flights by partner countries as well as commercial aircraft for about 8,000 in that 24hour Period and over the course of the last month or so 3,000 people since The End of july evacuated from afghanistan. The Nbc News poll tells a different story. The War In Afghanistan was not worth it. But then you look at the numbers for President Bidens handling of this crisis and the numbers are exactly flipped. Six in ten. While americans, by and large, agree with President Biden that we had to pull out of afghanistan, they by no means agree that we have done it well or that it should have been carried out the way President Biden and his team have carried it out. We heard from Jake Sullivan on Meet The Press who was asked by Chuck Todd whether they had a plan for this contingency. This is what he said. No plan survived first contact with reality. No plan can account for every contingency that occurs at a tactical level on a daytoday basis. You adjust. Weve adjusted and believe we are making progress. Reporter some of the ways are finding new ways to safely get americans from wherever they are in kabul to the airport. They also have just initiated this new program under the civil reserve air fleet. Major airlines like delta, american, united, hawaiian and others, will be giving 18 of their aircraft to be able to fly flights of american evacuees as well as afghan nationals. And our sources tell us these airlines will not be flying to that hamid karzai airport. Instead they will be carrying people from the transport hubs, once theyre out to Qatar Or Ramstein in germany to their final destination. That will be the job now of u. S. Commercial airliners under the new program. That totally makes sense. Keep the u. S. Military in charge of getting people out of afghanistan to those places and then let the commercial airlines pick it up from there. Thank you, josh. Appreciate that. Those numbers, i will ask adam, our director, to put them back up, the poll numbers, showing 61 dont think the War In Afghanistan was worth fighting. As josh said, flip it, you have 25 approving of the way that biden is handling afghanistan. How do you interpret these numbers . The calculations the White House is making when it comes to simply politics, americans will eventually forget how messy it was and be glad that the president got out, right . That by the time weeks and months have gone by these images will have faded in the public consciousness and all they will remember is were no longer stuck there. Thats the calculation the White House is making. I think the risk for them politically is it cements an idea this is a president who isnt as effective as he promised to be. He promised to come into office as the president of Confidence And Compassion after a president who didnt seem to exude either. Yet this episode is not, in fact, demonstrated that on his part. And so the question is whether or not not that americans want to stay in afghanistan but whether or not they see him as an effective president. One of the other polls show that his numbers on issues like competence, effectiveness, focus, those dropped by seven or eight points. Let me look at another one. Polls in general have gone down since april. His overall Approval Rating since sits at 49 . That is compared to 53 previously when asked about how the president is handling the pandemic. 53 say they approved compared to 69 previously. His Approval Rating for the economy down to 47 from 52 . All of the numbers put together, what do you think concerns the White House the most . I think they worry about a drip, drip, drip erosion. Hes been above 50 since taking office. Its still higher than President Trump ever was. It shows how polarized the nation is. And it may not be afghanistan. Covid has a lot of people worried and concerned. The Delta Variant and the refusal by a lot of people to vaccinate. Theres great concern on the part of many americans. The White House will tell you they think this is temporary and will begin to climb again once this immediate Emergency And Crisis has passed and will show progress on covid. Give a sense of the White House. How do members of the administration feel about how the situation in afghanistan is being handled . You have the president who says the buck stops with me. I take full ownership of my actions, but is there any internal Finger Pointing going on thinking, well, How Porl was he informed to make these decisions and things like that . Yeah, theres a lot of Finger Pointing in a moment like this. You harper the Defense Department complaining the State Department Isnt handling the processing correctly, complaining about the military. The White House complaining about everybody. The president out loud saying, look, the buck stops with me but basically its President Trumps fault, the afghan governments fault, even the Civilians Fault because they didnt want to leave earlier. Theres a lot of Finger Pointing. Theres talk about whether there should be resignations or firings as a result. I dont think thats where things are heading. This is a decision the president made, not handled by his staff. He came in very determined to do this. He has been determined for years. He was not really interested in Hearing Advice to the military. He thought the military would jam him up the way it jammed up President Obama and he owns it. He has said he will continue to own it and will take the blame for anything that happens. I dont think its the staff around him the president was bound and determined regardless of the warnings from diplomats and military people. Give us your best guess how long this lingers. We remember vietnam, right . We do. How long do you think this will linger . Arguably generations. When we look back years from now and at the history of this administration those pictures will be part of it. Thats not a good thing. We will see them again even if the evacuation works well and they wind it down on 9 11. Were about to have the 20th Anniversary and the flag will be flying over kabul. But within the backdrop of all of this, i want to talk about your new book the reckoning. Describe the reckoning you say our country is going through and are we still going through it today . Unfortunately, yes, we are still going through it. We will be for the foreseeable feature because we are in the midst of three very serious crises. Were looking at our fourth massive wave of covid, economic fallout from the last year and a half. And were still in a serious political crisis where democracy is on the brink, i believe. The reckoning that i believe needs to happen is, one, we need to start holding powerful men accountable, powerful white men usually, because they never have been in this country. How is it possible that time after time we let our elected officials, who have committed treason or unconstitutional behavior get off the hook . If somebody who incited an armed Insurrection Isnt held accountable, whoever will be and what message does that send . Tied to that the fact White Supremacy has existed in this country since its inception and not only have we never atoned for it we never acknowledged it and, therefore, its allowed to continue. The Republican Party has one of its major platforms, the idea of White Supremacy. And we need to look this squarely in the face. Otherwise Im Afraid nothing will change. In fact, things will get worse. If he can answer the question that means the answer is likely yes. He doesnt have to declare the money hes raising. Im afraid the answer might be yes and the reason is because republicans are setting things up so that its possible if he does run he cant lose. I think thats one of the reasons were seeing so many hundreds of Voter Suppression Legislation being passed or trying to be passed through state legislators. Hes a coward. The only way he would run is if he knew he couldnt lose and he has a lot at stake here. He needs the powers and protections of the Oval Office to keep him out of legal and criminal trouble. How about another potential Trump President ial run . How would that affect given your book our Nations Healing . And the fact he keeps teasing it, does that impact our ability to heal . It does. The best thing would be for him to go away. He thrives on Chaos And Division and, again, he holds superspreader events. He puts people at risk. I hope that the Republican Party comes to his senses its senses, to the extent thats possible and pushes him to the sidelines. But otherwise, no, we cannot begin to heal if were still in the process of being actively traumatized. I think thats happening for all of the reasons ive mentioned. What keeps you up at night. When you have concerns and you think about worst Case Scenarios, what keeps you up . I recently said to a friend of mine its a terrible time to have empathy. What keeps me up is the fact that covid is still running rampant. We see states running out of Icu Beds. States like florida not able to use Liquid Oxygen to purify water because theres an Oxygen Shortage because so many people are filling Icu Beds with covid. Thats the thing im most deeply worried about. Were on the brink of what looks like a Health Care Crisis the likes of which weve never seen and that in turn will lead to a mental Health Crisis the likes of which weve never seen.
