A very good day to all of you from Msnbc World headquarters here in New York. Welcome to alex witt reports. Here is what is happening at 2 00 p. M. Eastern, 11 00 a. M. Pacific time. We have Breaking News and several updates to share on hurricane henri. Moments ago new York Governor cuomo issuing a State Of Emergency for parts of the state and deploying hundreds of National Guard members. I feel confident saying to New Yorkers they could not be in better hands in terms of an experienced team. Now, that doesnt mean that Mother Nature doesnt win. She wins. She wins. She won at super storm sandy. She wins every time. But we will be doing everything that we can do to be prepared. The state of connecticut is also under a State Of Emergency. Were also getting a Brandnew Update from the national Hurricane Center. Henri is now picking up speed, moving faster with landfall less than 24 hours away. Lets get right to nbc News Meteorologist Michelle grossman with all of the new information for us. This just came down at the top of the hour, so what did you find out . Hi there, alex. Well, the good news is we havent seen much of a change. The Bad News is there is no change. So we are still seeing a category 1 storm. We are still expecting it to stay a category 1 strength as it crosses over Long Island and then make a second landfall in somewhere in New England. I will show you the track. Lets look at it right now. This is what it looks like on satellite. Where you see the Red Coloring those are the thunderstorms, those high clouds. It is not the prettiest of hurricanes, it is not very organized but it is entering an environment that it really likes, low sheer and really warm water. We expect to stay at the category 1 strength. The latest is 75 mourms winds. Thats what it was at 11 00 and we expect it to remain at that strength. Moving north northeast at 17 miles per hour, and you can see due east of cape hatteras, 210 miles east of cape hatteras. So we are seeing the seas picking up there but otherwise doing okay in the southeast. As we go throughout time, theres the category 1 storm, and then i stopped this clock here because i wanted to show you as of now the national Hurricane Center expects it to move over Long Island, the eastern third of Long Island as a category 1 storm later on Sunday Morning into sunday afternoon, and then it is going to make a second landfall into New England somewhere between connecticut and Rhode Island as a tropical storm. Now, this is where things get really concerning. You notice this graphic here. You see the white lines. Those are 12hour incorrects. What that is telling you is that the storm is going to be painfully slow as it moves into New England. So Sunday Night into monday morning, not moving very far, and kind of going over hartford. Now, hartford got a Ton Of Rain Last week from what was leftover from fred, so this is really something that is going to be a problem over sunday, monday, tuesday. We are going to see very saturated ground that is already saturated, some spots even saw July Record rainfall, and then in august with the remnants of fred, really seeing the grounds really saturated. Monday by 8 00, still not moving very far. What is going to happen is that it is going to move into New England. It is going to take a little jog to the west, so maybe even affecting parts of New York and then moving off to the east by tuesday, but it is going to take a long time and we are looking at the potential for power outages. This graphic, these are Computer Models. This is what we look at. The black line is the national Hurricane Center and thats what we show you and theres other Computer Models we look at. Theres a lot of agreement we expect it to move over Long Island, either central or the eastern part of Long Island and then into connecticut or Rhode Island. The impacts are the same. We are looking at really strong winds, Storm Surge and the potential for flooding Rain And Power outages. So a Hurricane Warning is in effect for montauk, new haven, islip, where you see the red. Now is the time to take action. Today it is quiet. You want to get everything done, fill up the water bottles, fill up the bathtub, too. You want to treat it like a tornado will be coming through because we could see trees coming down. Move your cars away from trees that may come down and get to higher level. There we see the orange, too. Thats New York even down into monmouth county, New Jersey as well. Storm surge is one of the impacts as well. Storm surge is a wall of water that is really dangerous. It is fast and it is strong. So we could see 3 to 5foot Storm Surge in some spots. Where you see the orange there doesnt mean everyone is going to see that. It is the potential to see it. Thats something that you really need to be careful with. You want to get back from the coastal waters, also the rainfall and the winds, alex. So we have 24 well, less than 24 hours now before the Storm Hits and now is the time to prepare. Okay. Michelle grossman, thank you so much. I appreciate all of the details. Really necessary to share them with all of our viewers. Want to let everyone know Janessa Webb, we will check in with her. She is on Long Beach, Long Island. We will see how things look with her in a little bit. Lets move to the Breaking News from afghanistan. As Nbc News is learning of a new threat from isis against the Kabul Airport. The u. S. Embassy is Warning Americans not yet at the airport to hold off on trying to get there, in part at least because of the threat. We have a live report from the pentagon in a moment for you. President biden cancelled his planned trip to delaware after discussing the Isis Threat with his national security team. More details on Evacuating Thousands Of Americans and visa holders, also vulnerable afghans. Meantime a spokesman for the taliban is telling Nbc News they will not stop anyone wanting to leave afghanistan and they will provide security for evacuees wherever they are based. Despite the chaotic situation on the ground, they have transported about 3,800 passengers out of kabul across 32 charters and six u. S. Military c17 planes. Hundreds have been taken to spots in europe and some in the u. S. Our team is standing by to bring you the new Reporting And Analysis of the days developments. We will go first to nbcs Courtney Kube at the pentagon. I know you have few details on the Kurt Threat surrounding kaub el airport. What do you know now at the top of 2 00 eastern . Reporter we know according to Defense Officials they are tracking specific threats by isis, the affiliate or the islamic State Affiliate in afghanistan. They are tracking some specific threats against the Kabul Airport and against americans and others who may be trying to go to Kabul Airport. So, you know, look, it is not a surprise. We know theres an Isis Presence in afghanistan, and, actually, there have been times where isis has attacked and struck out Inside Kabul as well. What is significant about this though is amidst the many threats that exist against americans, against afghans trying to get to the airport right now, amidst the concerns about getting through these taliban check points, this just adds another level of complexity to a dangerous and complex situation there in kabul. So to deal with this, the u. S. Military is trying to figure out alternative ways to get americans and afghans and third country nationals safely to the airport. Right now one of the ways that theyre looking at is organizing small groups of individuals to go to certain locations where the military will help them safely get to the airport. Most likely they will bring them to locations that are already close to the airport anyway. And what exactly does this threat look like . Well, you know, alex, in the last several days there have been more and more reports and cases of large groups of people outside the airport, particularly gathering around the gates, trying in many cases desperately trying to get into the airport. The concern is who are these people. Most of them, most likely, afghans who are scared, worried for themselves, worried for their families, trying to get in to get out on an evacuation flight. The concern though is could others like isis, potential Isis K fighters be mixing among them and presenting some kind of security threat. We have already seen one case where the military has acted because of a potential threat just like this. That was on thursday. Thursday afternoon there was a group of about 169 americans who were gathered at the Barron Hotel just outside the airport, right near the military side of the airport. They could not safely get to the Abby Gate which is nearby. You can actually run it, it is that close. But there was such a large group of people outside that gate that it wasnt safe for the americans to get there. The military took quick action. They got aboard three Chinook Helicopters, hopped over to the Barron Hotel, picked up the individuals, brought them safely to karzai international airport. So the question is will we see more of this. It is not clear. It is going to end up being on a Casebycase Basis according to Defense Officials i have spoken with. Again, alex, what this underscores is how difficult, how quickly moving the Security Environment is there in kabul. Yeah, and, frankly, you have got to add an element of danger to all of this. So Courtney Kube, thank you so much. Absolutely excellent reporting and putting us right there. I feel like we know exactly what is going on. Thank you, courtney, for that. Lets move to Josh Letterman who does the same for us from the white house. Josh, we know the president is prioritizing getting americans out of afghanistan, but lets talk about the afghan allies. What is the focus on that . Reporter well, it has been a moving target over the last week and a half or so, alex, because at first when the biden administration announced this massive Air Lift Operation that they were sending what is now about 6,000 troops who are in afghanistan dealing with this operation, the thought was that this was going to be a very limited effort, mainly focused on american citizens, and the question really was so what happens if we get to this deadline at the end of august and you dont have everybody out. The Administration Kind of Ee Kwif indicated on that until coming forward to say, no, look, we are basically going to stay until we get all of our american citizens out. Then, of course, the question became what about these Tens Of Thousands of afghan allies . We have been calling them siv applicants, special immigrant visa applicants, as well as their Family Members who are also eligible to come to the united states . President biden when he was asked about this yesterday seemed to suggest that this new commitment, that were basically not going to leave anybody behind when it comes to american citizens, would also apply to afghan partners and allies who may be at risk there. Take a listen to what he said. No more important than bringing american citizens out, i acknowledge that, but equally important almost is although who those sivs we call them, who, in fact, helped us. They were translators, they went into battle with us, they were part of the operation. We are continuing every opportunity and every means by which we could get folks to the airport. Reporter but here is the thing, alex. Saying that yesterday was a very different thing than saying that today because of the reason we just heard from Courtney Kube. Now this is looking like to get people safely to the airport is no longer going to be a matter of the u. S. With this very limited footprint at the airport protecting that facility, and basically people expected to present themselves to these gates at the airport. Now given the new threat we are hearing about and the fact that the government is going to be looking for other ways to get people safely to the airport, that means u. S. Military troops very likely leaving the airport, going into talibancontrolled kabul to try to rescue people. That is something that is one thing for american citizens, but it is very difficult given the small footprint that we have there to imagine how the u. S. Government could ever go and round up those Tens Of Thousands of afghans and their families and get them to the airport. So the question of how President Biden is going to be able to deliver on that commitment that we just heard him make is an open question at this hour, alex. 100 . There are no answers at this point. We dont know. Thank you so much, josh leaderman, from the white house. Joining me now washington congressman adam smith, chairman of the house armed services committee. Awful glad to have you right now given what we are talking about, which begins with your reaction to our new reporting of an Isis Threat against Kabul Airport. How much do you think this changes the dynamic of our mission . How concerned are you about isis, and even the presence of Al Qaeda in the region . Do you have any sense of their capability at this point . We dont know for sure. Im very concerned about isis. Isis and the taliban have been fighting each other for a while, so isis is not going to be calmed by the fact that the taliban have taken over, quite the contrary. Theyre going to continue the fight. I think right now they are the biggest threat to what were trying to do in kabul. The taliban see that threat as well and theyre trying to prevent it, but it is a real risk. We are not sure at this point what their capability is because, keep in mind, you know, we have pulled out and we have been out for a while. We dont have the type of visibility in afghanistan to monitor the Terrorist Threat we used to have. So it is imperative that we get the americans and the Siv Holders and the afghans who supported us out of there as quickly and as safely as possible. That is going to be a very complicated task. Are you confident those of whom you just spoke, they will all be out by President Bidens stated deadline ten days from now, August 31st . No, and i dont think that August 31st is going to work. I have spoken with Chairman Milley and Jay Sullivan Yesterday about this, and i think it is clear it is going to take more time than August 31st. You know, part of this, sadly, is to have the conversations with taliban leadership. You know, they dont want a huge, violent, you know, outbreaking in kabul any more than we do. The problem is that the taliban leadership that were talking to may be saying one thing, the taliban on the ground in kabul seem to be doing something different. That complicates the task as well. Whatever the taliban leadership is saying, their fighters on the ground in kabul are making this more difficult. Yeah. As many reports have told us. I was going to say multiple anecdotal tales about that to back up your point exactly. Lets turn to the unclassified briefing you and your colleagues got yesterday on afghanistan. Did you get an efficient, accurate assessment of the situation on the ground there . Do you have questions you still want answered . Well, like i said, i personally spoke with Chairman Milley and Jay Sullivan and Deputy Secretary of defense, kathleen hicks, yesterday. So i got most of those answers. The debriefing answered some. I dont think it was as satisfying for members as we would have liked in terms of getting into the details of what the plan is going to be to get out there, as your reporter is very intelligently reported. We are going to have to go outside of the airport in order to get the americans and the Siv Holders out. They are going to struggle to get there because of isis, because of the taliban, for a bunch of different reasons. I think we need more details on how the military, the u. S. Government is going to accomplish that. You know, i asked courtney exactly this question about will this now mean that you are going to have to have u. S. Military outside the airport. She said right now it is not happening, but to get the americans this is it inevitable . I think it is more likely we are going to identify where americans are and do specific, if you will, rescue missions. Whether it is in kabul like the hotel, right . The one the hotel you could reach . Exactly. The Chinook Helicopters brought them in. Okay. It is also possible depending on how discussions go with the taliban we could find other locations within kabul that we could secure, whether it is a hotel or a park or an area, where we could then communicate with the american citizens and the others, the afghans we are trying to get out, rendezvous here, we will take you to the airport from there. Thats also possible. But i think the more likely scenario is to identify the people we want to get out that cant get to the airport and go get them. It is incredibly important that we do this. I mean there are a lot of very tough lessons to learn about our experience in afghanistan, but right now, you know, in the next month, the degree to which we are successful in getting americans and our afghan supporters out of the country is just crucial to protecting the people that we ought to protect. How many are we talking about, congressman . I mean do you have a sense of that . I do. It is a somewhat fluid number. In terms of americans we are talking probably a couple thousand at this point. In terms of Siv Holders, we are talking about 4,000 plus family, which could get us up close to 15,000. So, you know, you add all of that up and you are pushing up towards 20,000. The real unanswered question is how many other afghans who are supported us or who just want to get out for one reason or another, women and girls, organizations that have been supporting women and girls who feel threatened, whether they actually have yet qualified for an siv doesnt mean that we shouldnt try to get them out. That number is really hard to estimate. 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, hard to say. Once we get them out, the other problem here that hasnt been that widely reported, you certainly have a Choke Point at the airport, but once we get them on the planes and take them, we have to have a place to take them. We are taking them to a base in qatar right now. You know, thats getting backed up. So we have to have a place to take them and we have to have a method for processing them to figure out where ultimately theyre going to land. We need to really be committed to doing the very hard work of getting this done to protect these people. So when you think about these numbers, i mean at minimum it would sound like 20,000 people but upwards of that in all likelihood. Certainly it is a humanitarian crisis, absolutely 100 . How much of this also has to do with the signaling to our allies, the signaling to the rest of the world about the united states and what it will do in a situation like this . Our reputation. I think thats crucial. I mean, look, we want to be leaders in the world, leaders that promote economic and political freedom and Human Rights and to show people that we will commit to them and back them up. Successfully removing people from afghanistan will be a big measure of this. I have heard a lot of people that are critical of the fact, you know, that we are pulling out of afghanistan and what does that say about our commitment. Look, we put 20 years, roughly 2 trillion, several thousand lost american lives, Tens Of Thousands of wounded to try and build a government in afghanistan that could be a reasonable replacement for the taliban. That is an enormous commitment. I hasten to say i dont think any other country in the world would do that. I should point out we had a lot of allies helping us, certainly our nato partners and other partners. So a lot of people contributed to that effort. To look at that effort and say, ah, we didnt keep our commitment, we did everything we possibly could to keep our commitment. The most profound mistake was in thinking that we could create this government. It turned out not to be possible, but i think the rest of the world should look at what were doing now, what we have done in afghanistan over the last 20 years as clear evidence that america will still by its commitment to our allies even when it is enormously costly to do so. Yeah. I want to read part of a statement that you put out that somewhat is a synopsis of what you are saying. You say, in part, we stuck with this mission for years to avoid the level of chaos we are now seeing, but the tragic situation on the ground proves that the president was right. We needed to get out of afghanistan to prevent the loss of more american lives in pursuit of futile efforts to rebuild the government of afghanistan. So what were seeing now, congressman, was this inevitable and, if so, should and could the u. S. Have been better prepared for the withdrawal . Yeah. I dont know enough to say whether or not it was inevitable, and there are several key parts packed in your question. Number one, the effort in the first place. Should we learn from this . Absolutely. I think we have. When you look at some of the places where we faced Terrorist Threats from now, somalia, yemen, libya, parts of west africa, we have not gone in there and tried to do the Nation Building that we tried to do in iraq and afghanistan. I think we have learned that lesson. But the second part of your question that i think is important to be honest about, the central failure i think of the biden Administrations Effort in terms of getting people out was they wanted to believe that the afghan government could somehow stand after our military left. When the intelligence was pretty clear, i mean there was a debate would it be months, would it be years, would it be weeks, how quickly would this government fall. But i think we should have been more cleareyed and say, look, the afghan government is going to fall and the taliban are going to take over, and if we had accepted that we would have worked to get american citizens out first and then we would have worked to get our afghan Allies Out first before we took the military out. The reason we didnt is because we wanted to believe that the afghan government could stand. I think we should have been more honest with ourselves about the reality of the situation and the implications of that reality. Those implications were brutal. Think in march or april if we said we are pulling ought of the afghans out, we are pulling ought of the american civilians out, that would have sent a clear signal we know the afghan government is going to fall, and that would have been tough but it also would have been accurate and it would have helped at least reduce the level of chaos we are seeing in afghanistan right now. Congressman adam smith, i want to appreciate what you just did. Yes, i always pack a lot in my questions but you very capably break it down and answer them. Thank you so much. I try. More School Districts in florida are taking Mask Mandates into their own hands as florida surpasses more than 3 Million covid cases. Last night republicanleaning Sarasota County joined five other School Districts in defying Governor Desantiss Ban on Mask Mandates, and that list also includes Hillsborough County which issued a temporary Mask Mandate this week after more than 1,000 students tested positive for covid during their first week back in class. Lets go to nbcs Stephanie Stanton in tampa with the very latest on this. Stephanie, welcome to you. What can you tell us for the new Mask Guidelines for the students . Lets talk about Hillsborough County there. Reporter yes, good afternoon to you, alex. Hillsborough county, as you said, the School District to temporarily mandate masks for the next 30 days. That means that parents will not be able to opt out. That means if students cannot wear a mask they must have a doctors note. This, of course, is in response to the exploding cases here. When you look at the School District dashboard which tracks its covid cases, as of Friday The District reported more than 13,000 students and teachers out on quarantine. Now, that is roughly 6 of the District Population of about 240,000 students. Since the start of school just last week there have been about 3,000 covid cases, and on friday 300 covid cases alone. Now, the School Board made this decision to go ahead and defy governor desantiss noMask Mandate and risk losing funding because of the sharp rise in cases. I did have an opportunity to speak to the superintendent this morning. He says while he does still support parental choice, he says he had no choice but to go along with the School Boards Decision And Help keep students safe. No one loves to wear mask. You know, whether you are pro mask, whether you are against masks, no one loves to wear masks but it is just the current state we are in. You know, here in Hillsborough County our hospitals are full, we dont have sufficient number of beds. Were backlogged to be able to have that connectivity from primary cares, from our practitioners. So we just got to have another Mitigation Strategy we put in place. Here in Hillsborough County not only do we implement, we will implement masks for the next 30 days but holistically we will continue to have Sanitation Stations in every one of our classrooms. Reporter and Hillsborough County is joining several other counties around the state here in florida who are now going ahead and defying governor desantiss order. The superintendent that you saw there, he says he has not yet been contacted by any officials from the state, anyone from governor desantiss office regarding possibly pulling funding of his salary and some of the other Board Members salaries. Right now theyre in a wait and see. At this point, again, they say their Number One priority is to keep students safe, alex. As well it should be. Thank you so much. Stephanie stanton in tampa. Right now several states are, in fact, Running Out of Icu Beds as the Delta Variant surges, causing more of a strain on Health Care workers. Im angry at everything, im angry at patients who chose not to get vaccinated. I am angry at the Health System for not being able to handle it even if it is not their fault. Im angry at myself for not having done more early in the pandemic. It is hard. I walk around Grocery Stores looking at people and wondering what they look like when theyre going to get into icu. It is pretty difficult to deal with. Joining me now is dr. Peter hotez, codirector, center for Vaccine Development at texas childrens hospital, also author of the book preventing the next pandemic, Vaccine Diplomacy in a time of antiscience. Dr. Hotez, what is your response to what you just heard from those Health Care workers, as i welcome you . Yeah, no, it is hard breaking to listen to them and it is real. I mean the pain is real. Theyre exhausted. Theyve been watching their patients lose their lifts, oftentimes theyre the only ones that can hold their hand as they, you know, have their last breath, and the post traumatic stress from that will haunt these nurses and Hospital Staff and doctors for years to come. And then, you know, as voiced outside, you know, then they go to the store after their shift is over and theyre watching people oblivious to all of this, people with no masks and even defiant of masks and vaccinations, and that is incredibly demoralizing as well. And the staff shortages are extraordinary. Nurses have been leaving the profession. Were not training enough nurses, nearly enough nurses. So when you talk about icus being overwhelmed and now sadly Pediatric Icus overwhelmed, it is not just the beds, alex, it is the fact we dont have the nursing staff. You can always make an Icu Bed but you cant you cant make an Icu Nurse just like that. They require years of training, and thats what were suffering from. I mean it is all hard to hear, but you mentioned the pediatric units. You have Child Hospitalizations for covid, dr. Hotez. They have increased to levels not seen since the height of the pandemic. How can parents protect kids not eligible for the vaccine from the virus . Alex, it is about to get worse because you remember some of the big districts like houston independent School District, that opens on monday. I hate to say it but it is the Warmup Act for what will be following in the next few years. You know, here is what has to happen but, unfortunately, it is not. You know, when you are in the middle of a raging epidemic like this across the southern united states, theres no theres no margin for error. That means that everyone who walks into a school has to have a Mask On except perhaps some of the Special Needs kids who cant. Everyone has to have a Mask On, the students, any parents visiting, bus drivers, school staff, kids, of course, and then the other thing that no one is talking about is everybody over the age of 12 has to be vaccinated. Theres no other way around it. We have to have Vaccine Mandates and we havent even begun to scratch the surface on that and thats not happening either. So im pessimistic that many schools are going to open and theyre going to shutter pretty quickly. I will say though theres a california school, im sure you have heard about it, a School District saying, yes, every student that comes on the campus, teacher, staff, everybody has to be vaccinated. Do you think it is a trend that is going to start . I mean are you hopeful it will . Well, im hopeful. You know, we are hearing now that the Pfizerbiontech Vaccine may be approved by the fda next week and maybe they say monday. Yeah, well see. I hope that happens soon because if it does i think that will give more schools the impetus to do that. Usually though it is controlled at the State Legislature Level and in our southern states, especially here in texas where we have we actually have antivaccine political action committees, antivaccine pacs that lobby the state legislature. It is just not going to happen. Thats where we need it most right now in the south where the epidemic is raging the worst. Let me ask you about the booster shot. Theres a Health Expert who described it as handing out extra life jackets to people with already life jackets while leaving other people to drown without a single life jacket. We have americans now, dr. Hotez, beginning to get their third vaccinations. That officially starts next month. We know some have already done it. Does this present anything of a moral dilemma as much as the world remains unvaccinated . Somewhat. But i think the idea of a zero Sum Game is a little simplistic also. You know, when we went to the Threetofour Week Interval in the beginning of this year, we did that in order to get americans fully immunized as quickly as possible. The problem with that Threetofour Week Interval for pfizer, Biontech And Moderna au respectively is that schedule is not very good for producing long lasting durable immunity. Thats why the effectiveness has gone down from 90 to 40 to 50 . Hospitalizations may not be going up yet, but i think the Health And Human Services this week said theyre worried this is just the tip of the spear. Were going to start seeing breakthrough hospitalizations. All of that data needs to be reviewed by acip to really look through the data because none of us have seen adequate amounts of data. Thats point one. Point two is when we talk about global vaccine equity, and i have devoted my life to developing vaccines for povertyrelated and neglected diseases including a Covid Vaccine that our group at texas childrens is now accelerating in india. India has produced starting to produce 100 Million doses a month of that vaccine. I think the problem is we dont have enough Mrna Vaccine to go around. I mean the brandnew technology, theres a Learning Curve before you can scale it up and make billions of doses. I think the failure was a science policy failure, being so focused on innovation and what i sometimes in my despair call shiny, new toys. Theyre good vaccines. I got the Pfizerbiontech Vaccine and im grateful for it, but there never would be enough in 2021 to vaccinate the world. So now were getting calls from you name it, countries in Africa And Asia desperate for our vaccine. We have done the Technology Transfer to india. We are in discussions now with about half a dozen other countries to scale up production. Yeah. Were not getting any help from the u. S. Government. Theres just not even any intellectual curiosity about it. So were making oneoff deals, you know, basically giving it away to low and middle income countries trying to help them scale it up. Were just not getting the help we need, and i think thats where the Equity Piece needs to come in. It is too simplistic to say, oh, weve got to share mrna doses. Of course, we have to do a better job doing that, but even then we have to immunize 6 Billion people in low and middle income countries. Even if we were to get rid of all of our Stockpile Tomorrow it would just get us a couple of percentage points of the way there. We need the u. S. Government to pitch in and scale it up for our vaccine and others. Some Breaking News to share on the Security Alert adding to the anxiety felt by Tens Of Thousands in afghanistan. Nbc news is learning of a new threat from isis against the Kabul Airport. The u. S. Embassy telling americans do not travel to the airport because of potential Security Threats that exist outside the airport gates. These are some of the pictures of the desperation among the crowds there. One person even lifting a baby to a marine. We have found out that baby is okay and has been reunited with family. On Friday Hundreds of evacuees arrived at Ramshtine Air Base coming from doha, qatar. They are in good condition. Seeing the children and families coming off with huge smiles warms your heart. Joining me now a former Nbc Correspondent that reported from kabul for years. Her novel The Secret Sky is set in affidavit, atia, im so glad to welcome you back. As we talk about this new Isis Threat at the airport, what do you make of that, atia . Reporter thank you for having me. It is a frightening situation for everyone there, americans, afghans and the international community. What is happening right now is what i think many people feared would happen. Right now we have been seeing for the last several days the taliban presenting an image of inclusivity and forgiveness, but anyone that knows afghanistan knows that the taliban isnt just one group. As the afghans would say they have many hands. We saw the Hakani Network now pretty much taking over kabul. For people who dont know who the Hakani Network are, theyre pretty much gangsters aligned with Al Qaeda, aligned with isis, and, unfortunately, also aligned with the Pakistani Isi because they have their base in pakistan. Theyre pretty much responsible for thousands, Hundreds Of American deaths, Tens Of Thousands of afghans deaths, even possibly thousands of the american and international deaths. They were the ones with the ieds, the suicide bombings. Yes, there were other groups as well but the Hakani Network were the most powerful group behind that. From what we hear theyre taking over parts of what the tal been were trying to main control of. The taliban had been going to Government Officials telling them to stay in positions they wanted a smooth transfer of power. We are hearing that the hakani has gone into the offices and said, no, youre done with the job, were coming in. The taliban are disagreeing and the afghans dont know what to do. There is part of a womans story i want to play for you. This is from nbcs Richard Engel in his report. Lets take a listen to this. Reporter we met gina abowi, an Afghan American from virginia. She moved back to afghanistan to teach six years ago when it was much safer. It was a Dream Come True for me. I have house by the mountains. I cannot imagine leaving but unfortunately it is time to go. Reporter you left obviously the house. Everything, everything, everything. Small little suitcase with my laptop and thats it. Reporter shes bringing 25 members of her extended family. She doesnt want to leave. Im sure it wasnt lost on you her last name is also abawi. We have to say she made it out. Im curious what you are hearing from afghans hoping to evacuate. There are desperate afghans and they are, yes, fleeing the taliban, fleeing violence but poverty. The banks have been frozen. Money is not coming in. People though were expecting their salaries arent getting their money. Prices have gone up on pretty much everything, fuel, food, clothes. They are fleeing poverty as well. But then there are afghans who dont want to flee but friends outside of afghanistan like myself, like our journalist friends, diplomat friends, former u. S. Service members who served in afghanistan begging them to try to leave because their lives are in danger. But they want to try and see if the taliban are showing a hand to possibly do something different from the original taliban regime. But, unfortunately, what were seeing with Hakani Network and isis at the moment, that may not happen. Here is a note to make here. We have to reach out to countries that were allied with like pakistan and china, that we have friendly relationships with, but the u. S. Possibly doesnt trust 100 because those are the ones who are going to have the relationship with either the taliban or the hakanis. In fact, despite not being able to get americans out, despite not being able to get nato Allies Out, the pakistani Foreign Minister is going to be coming into kabul today. Thats the information we are getting. So how is it that he can come in but all of these other People Cant get out . So we need to talk to these Government Officials in these other countries to make sure theres some kind of stability or we will see massive Blood Shed on a horrible scale. I want to play something. We have talked over the years about what could come after americans leave kabul, and we spoke in 2014 about this. Lets play part of that. Do you think the international community will pull out entirely, and then what would that mean for the afghans . Well, it is going to be curious to see if they will pull out entirely. The afghan people are hoping, and thats basically all they have right now, is hope. Yeah. That the international community will keep them in their thoughts and try to help them out because the last time they were ignored We Saw what afghanistan became. So look at the pictures from the past week. It has been filled with agony to witness this. I hate to ask you, but is there still hope . Alex, im going to tell you, the whole terrifying prospect is history often repeats itself. We are hoping it wouldnt repeat itself, but the truth of the matter is afghanistan has been handed over to a terrorist organization, the Hakani Network. The taliban are fundamentalists that havent necessarily all been labeled as terrorist, but the Hakani Network has. Theyre in charge of kabul at the movement. Lets not Sugar Coat this. The taliban are considered Teddy Bears compared to the Hakani Network. This is going to become a country that is going to be a Breeding Ground for fundamentalists, not just growing fundamentalism from the inside. People will be flying in from all over the world just the way that We Saw it happen in syria with isis, but this time it is going to be a legitimate state. God knows what that is going to produce to the rest of the world in the future. I do fear that that means involvement in the future. Look, i dont know, the war was not popular. The war was not a popular war, but it didnt have to be this way. There could have been a better way to leave it. Atia abawi, i hope we dont have to play this clip and all you prophesied down the road together. Thank you so much, my friend. I have talked to public officials here in Long Beach, and theyre asking people to really stay out of the water. You can start to see the high surf is now picking up. We are approaching high tide around 8 00, so thats going to be a little bit of a concern. Also, you can see these dunes over here. So we are just moving her car, but i dont expect this part of the island to be really hit that hard. I think it is supposed to be out west more, but i can see right as we are talking now, in the last hour the sky has really gotten to be really ominous. Reporter right. I am joined by the Managing Director of communications for mercy corps. Welcome. We have seen devastating pictures out of haiti. What are you seeing on the ground and what are you hearing . There is just an absolutely terrible amount of destruction. We have been concentrating our efforts in the area where 90 of buildings have been affected in some way and 50 of homes have been completely destroyed. I have been speaking to families who are sleeping out in the open, in a school which was partly destroyed, and theyre sleeping headtotoe, sidebyside in a classroom where the desks have been cleared out to make room for people who have lost their homes. The needs are just absolutely massive, and the logistical challenges of this response are herculean. Like what . Im sure roads are affected, buildings affected, probably trucks that before this would have carried materials also out of commission. Absolutely. Driving around we are seeing landslides, we are seeing some flooding. Of course, tropical Depression Grace before being upgraded to a hur came came right through immediately after the earthquake. So you had all of that ground shook up and then a massive amount of rainfall causing tremendous erosion. This is a rural area we are talking about. Half of the country of haiti doesnt have enough food to eat to begin with. When people are living on a knifes edge like this theres some little margin for error.
