Go to delaware this afternoon. Were going to take you to the White House for a live report in just a moment. Meanwhile, the Breaking News from overseas as scenes of Chaos And Desperation are playing out In Kabul. The u. S. Embassy put out a new security alert, officials say a new threat has emerged outside the gates to the airport. So theyre advising americans to stay away for now. Large crowds inside and outside today, american citizens, residents, Visa Holders and afghans who are just anxious to leave, all as the taliban consolidates its control over the city. Heres part of a report from nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel. Reporter taliban fighters marching through the streets, dressed in all white, the color of the Talibans Flag and a simple theyre ready for martyrdom. Outside the last remaining u. S. Base at Kabul Airport, chaos continues. This is what crowds have to face to get inside. [ gunfire ] reporter shooting, violence, taliban whips. American troops worry if they open the gates, people will flood in. Theres desperation and anguish. So hard to see. Just a short time ago pentagon officials confirming the new Security Threat at the Kabul Airport, but declining to give details. Again, im not going to get into specific threat assessments. The situation In Kabul and the whole city is fluid and dynamic and you have seen the images over the last 2448 hours yourself of the situation outside the perimeter of the airport. And It Changes. It changes almost by the hour and It Changes in locations around the airport. Its very, very fluid and dynamic. And so i dont want to speak for the State Department, obviously, but like our military commanders, they are going to make decisions in real time about what is in the best interest of innocent civilians that have need to get to the airport. Meanwhile, in just the last few hours, hundreds of evacuees have arrived at military bases and camps around europe. A number of allies have agreed to accept afghan refugees. State department officials say they will make decisions on permanent resettlement locations. We have reporters standing by with all the details. Lets start with Courtney Kube at the pentagon. Welcome to you on this saturday. What are we learning about what is happening on the ground in afghanistan right now . Reporter so flights have resumed, u. S. Military flights with evacuees, but there was this significant pause on friday. We now know that in about a 24hour Period six military c17s took off out of Kabul Airport and that is down from where they had been 24 hours earlier, nearly triple that number taken off. And that was due in large part to a Capacity Issue at the next location where these flights are going, namely in doha, qatar. Now there are other locations in the region and in europe where some of these flights are able to go. But some of the other narratives, the other things that we heard at Todays Pentagon Briefing include the Security Threat In Kabul. You played some of that sound from john kirby. The u. S. Embassy In Kabul, now located out of the airport, issued a warning telling u. S. Citizens do not come to the airport right now because of the Security Situation, and weve been trying to get to the bottom of exactly what that is. We know now that there was an issue with a number of americans who were trying to get to the Airport On thursday and it became too dangerous for them to go just a very short distance from the Baron Hotel to whats called the Abby Gate at the airport there. I can tell you, for perspective, its about 150 meters from the front of the baron to the gate. But it was too dangerous because of crowds that had gathered at that gate and u. S. Military saying they just didnt know who was in those crowds, if it was a potentially dangerous situation and its just difficult to get through them to the gate. Because of that, the military sent out three chinook helicopters, flew into the baron, picked up 169 individuals, and flew them into Kabul Airport. So what were trying to get a sense of, is that the Security Threat that they are warning americans not to go to the airport now because of that . Just because of the crowds and the uncertainty of who is in them . Or is there something potentially even beyond that, alex . I have a question, based on the expertise that you have, having been there. So this 150 meters and this abbey entrance, where is the u. S. Temporary embassy or the makeshift embassy, where is that located relative to that . And if people, afghans and americans who are looking to get visas or get their papers processed to get out of the country, dont they have to go to the embassies . If theyre saying dont come to the airport, how does anybody have access to get that done . Reporter the embassy is closed. Theres No One left at the u. S. Embassy. Theyve moved the staff to the airport. And i mean, this is one of the big issues, right . There are a lot of afghans who are eligible to leave, the u. S. Would support them in these diplomatic processes, so whether its the special immigrant Visa Process or theyre eligible for it, or this newer process, which is p2, and thats a larger group of afghans the u. S. Would be able to help potentially process for citizenship and bring them to the united states. Its a months long process, but because of the Security Situation in afghanistan, the u. S. Is making a lot of allowances for people and saying, look, well get you well help you get to another country and then well work on your paperwork from there. So the problem is, if these afghans can get through the taliban checkpoints that are all around the airport right now, both the civilian and military side of the airport, and get to the gates, they may not be able to get in the gate because they may not have the proper paperwork. Now, to deal with this issue, theres u. S. Military, mainly largely u. S. Marines and soldiers who are at some of these gates and theres no State Department officers there trying to help, but its not a perfect process. Not everyone there is able to get through. And the other issue is there are so many people backed up at some of these gates, that even if you are eligible, you literally cannot physically get up to the gate to even get through. You can see just the magnitude. There are so many hurdles that these people have to get through. Some of them very dangerous, like getting through a taliban checkpoint before they can even get onto the Airport Grounds and get manifested onto one of these flights. Total Reality Check from you. Thank you so, Courtney Kube, i appreciate that. Lets go to Josh Lederman at the White House. What is the president saying about whether he can accomplish the risky mission over the next ten days and get to that deadline successfully and get americans out . Reporter the president says he can and he has been defensive of his administrations handling of this Air Lift so far and confident that they are going to be able to get everyone out. The president noting, as he spoke at the White House yesterday, that its the largest historically large Airlift Operation conducted by the u. S. , and as far as the numbers there is some reason to be optimistic. Over the last couple of days they have finally gotten to be able to airlift thousands of people today, a high of 5,700 two days ago, now in the most recent 24hour Period dropping to below 4,000, part as a result of the temporary pause, the Backlog Issue at qatar that forced them to look for other places to put these americans and afghan allies that are being evacuated from the country. But at the same time, alex, its been hard to overlook over the last couple of days the disconnect between the president s confidence when hes addressed the situation and the really dire humanitarian crisis, really, that were watching Play Out on the scene in Kabul And Outside of the airport. The president , for example, when he spoke yesterday, downplaying the risk to americans who would be trying to get to the airport, saying that he was aware of no incidents of americans who were unable to actually make it through kabul and get to the airport, when we know from these anecdotal reports and this video that weve seen over the last few days that it has been an incredibly difficult and dangerous mission for americans to try to get to the airport, and now in light of this new u. S. Embassy Kabul Alert this morning, evidence from the u. S. Government that theyre concerned, too, about whether americans can get to the airport. So the president saying that while this has been heartbreaking to watch, he is confident that they are doing exactly what they need to do. Hes also making this promise to americans who might be left in afghanistan. Let me be clear. Any american who wants to come home, we will get you home. Make no mistake, this Evacuation Mission is dangerous. It involves risks to Armed Forces and its being conducted under difficult circumstances. I cannot promise what the final outcome will be, that it will be without risk of loss. But as commander in chief, i can assure you that i will mobilize every resource necessary. Reporter and while its been utter chaos In Kabul, alex, it has also been chaotic here at the White House, as many of the president s aides were on vacation last week, had to scramble back to the White House. The president , he was expected yesterday to go to wilmington to his home for the weekend. He was going and then he was not going, then he was going to be going again this morning, after meeting with his national security advisers here at the White House. And then at the last minute, as reporters were sitting at Joint Base Andrews awaiting the president s departure, he brought that trip off the schedule, is no longer going. So an indication of just how fast and fluid this situation is here at the White House as President Biden and his aides are trying to get a handle on the situation, alex. Lots to keep track of. Thank you, josh. Appreciate that. So joining me right now is maryland senator ben carden, a democratic member of the senate foreign relations and finance committee. So glad to have you here. I want to get right to what you and your colleagues had, which was an unclassified briefing from the administration yesterday. Can you share parts of it with us, and did it provide the answers that you were looking for . Alex, first of all, its good to be with you. The briefing was helpful, but still theres so many questions that have not been answered. It changes by the moment In Kabul at the airport. We still dont know how the communications are being done with americans or those who helped us as to when they should go to the airport, how they can get to the airport, how theyll be able to board planes. Its rather chaotic and we just dont have good information as to how safe it is for individuals to be able to get to the airport, and then through the gate itself. So theres still a very critical situation. Our mission right now is to save as many people as we possibly can, highest priority, u. S. Citizens, then those who helped us directly in our mission, and then those who are at risk, such as leaders in the community that were supporting our mission in afghanistan. Senator its a very fluid situation and dangerous situation. Sir, as youve been watching all of this Play Out, when you look at it, is there anything in your mind that you think could have been done differently to avoid some of the pitfalls that we are currently facing . Well, alex, clearly this should we should have had Contingency Plans to be able to remove people quicker than we did. The fall of afghanistan was a lot faster than we had anticipated, a lot faster, but we should have had plans in place in case of this type of circumstance. Were going to have hearings in congress. Were going to do oversight. Thats our responsibility. We will first support the president , everything he needs in order to get people out of afghanistan, but once weve completed the rescue mission, then were going to find out what went wrong, why were we not better prepared for this contingency. And by the way, there will be a lot of review as to the stakes made over the entire 20 years of our campaign in afghanistan, starting, first, with our decision in 2002 to go into iraq. So theres going to be a way that we will do our oversight. We didnt do that, the republicancontrolled congress didnt do that during the Trump Administration. Well do this. We believe congress has a critical role of oversight. Well want questions answered as to why we were not better prepared. This is going to be a tough Question And Answer as well, but the speed with which afghanistan fell, that weve all witnessed, do you point fingers at the United States Military and its withdrawal . Do you point fingers at the afghan government . Do you point fingers at the power of the taliban that may not have been successfully communicated from intelligence . Or it was communicated and it was not dealt with properly . I mean, where does finger pointing, i dont want to use the Word Blame yet, because the whole thing has not played out. What are you looking at most concerning . Well, i think, first i go back to 2002 when the decision was made after the taliban had been basically destroyed to remove our troops and go into iraq, a decision i disagreed with under president bush. We should have then worked to install a stable government that represented the people in afghanistan so we would not confront this situation today. And then, of course, last Year President Trump made a decision to meet secretly with the taliban. He trusted the taliban, which is something you can never do, and announced our withdraw by may of last year. That set in course what happened these past couple of weeks. So i think mistakes have been made, but were going to have a chance to review that and make sure we dont repeat these mistakes in the future. But let me, again, be clear, our Mission Today is to save lives and we have to get people out of afghanistan. First americans and then those who helped us. Sir, if public sentiment is one of getting americans out of afghanistan overwhelmingly so, when all is said and done, will this be perceived as a mistake . I think the Way Afghanistan was handled, there were a lot of mistakes made. We needed to go into afghanistan because thats where the attack on our country originated on september the 11th. We had a responsibility to root out the taliban and Al Qaeda organizations, and we did that. We got that done in 2001 and 2002. We then went on to establish a government and a presence in afghanistan, to help establish a Government And Presence in afghanistan, but we didnt complete that. We then went into iraq with our military and we were engaged in a lengthy Military Campaign in iraq and never finished establishing stability in afghanistan. Mistakes were made, no question about it. And then when there was opportunities for trying to figure out how theyre going to withdraw our troops, we went through two administrations, the Obama Administration and Trump Administration with different strategies and policies. Neither were successful in the successful removal of our troops and a stable government in afghanistan. President biden had few options left. There was not really a Military Solution and afghans had to take care of themselves. So, yes, there were lots of mistakes made during the 20year campaign in afghanistan. Senator, how is this impacting americas image on the World Stage . Well, look, i think america first of all, you asked about our military. Our military performed brilliantly in afghanistan. Theyre incredible in their ability to act the way we would want a democratic state, the leader of the democratic world to operate. They operated with respect for the people of afghanistan, they empowered the afghans to take care of themselves, which they never took on that responsibility. So i think our military acted appropriately. America can only do what it can do. We cannot run governments in other parts of the world. The people have to be able to have representatives that they have confidence in, that did not take place in afghanistan. And i think we have to learn our lesson, move on, and rally the democratic allies around the world to learn from what happened in afghanistan. Senator ben cardin, such difficult times. Thank you so much for taking the difficult questions and sharing your thoughts and sage opinions. I appreciate it. Thank you. Now to other Breaking News, millions in the northeast are making lastminute preparations for a direct hit from Hurricane Henri, with conditions likely to worsen as soon as tonight. Landfall impact expected Tomorrow Afternoon on new yorks Long Island or in the southern New England areas. The exact location uncertain at this hour, but impacts will extend far from the center of the hurricane, including dangerous Storm Surge and heavy rainfall across the region. Lets go to janessa webb, joining us from long beach, new york. Welcome to you. So we know this storm picked up in speed and in power today. How about the latest on the track . Where is it headed . Reporter you know, alex, we are about to witness a historic storm, along with a very dangerous storm. I want to get right to the latest from the national Hurricane Center coming out just about an hour ago, and what the problem is now, we have that forward Motion Speed from Hurricane Henri thats starting to make its way parallel across the carolina coast. Whats going to happen is that it will continue its trek well to the north and then well start to see a sharp left turn and thats whats causing real concerns across Long Island into sections of southern New England. So you can see this is an ominouslooking storm system. Its not asymmetrical just yet, but the strongest side, the dirty side of this hurricane, the right side, has really started to come together. From the latest track were going to see intensification going into later today, but a statement from the national Hurricane Center, people need to be prepared going into tonight. We probably wont see the landfall until Tomorrow Afternoon, but the problem is well start to deal with those heavier bands. This will continue its trek into Long Island and then it goes back out to sea and then potentially a double landfall. So the moisture is definitely there, hurricane warnings, they are currently expanding across sections of the northeast, and still in that cone is new York City. Now, the preps that are going on, we are talking about some major metro areas, new York City to connecticut to the boston area. We just dont deal with hurricanes, cat 1 hurricanes, we havent seen that in over 30 years. So the last hurricane that We Saw was in 1991, bob. So we just are not familiar with that compared to people in florida. So the preparation is really key and here in Long Island you can see people are still really out and about on the beach. I did talk to some public officials and lifeguards here, and no swimming is permitted for the rest of the day, but people are allowed to be on the beach. And you can see, still, hundreds of people are trying to enjoy the day. It is the weekend. And we did have a fair that was supposed to go on, but things have started to be canceled around here and people are starting to really take heed now that weve dealt with were dealing with a hurricane. Now, we do have a State Of Emergency that has been declared for connecticut and we do have some latest words from the mayor. We saw rainfall accumulations two days ago that some people are categorizing as 100 year storm, some as a 200 year storm, but it was an enormous volume of rain in a very short period of time that led to some of the worst Flooding Weve seen in many, many years. What that also means is that the ground is probably going to be pretty saturated, so we are very, very attuned to the possibility that well see some significant flooding over the next couple of days as well. Reporter alex, the Storm Surge, you can hear Peoples Cell phones going off, warnings that are starting to come in. Preparation is key. Its time to act now. There are nearly 38 Million cases in the u. S. In just over 630,000 total deaths. Florida is reporting more than 3 Million cases statewide, 150,000 added in the past week, and nearly 350 people died, this according to the cdc. Also in florida, Orlandos Mayor is asking residents to limit Water Usage due to a shortage of Liquid Oxygen that is used to treat the Citys Water systems. The city ran low after the surge of covid patients. A review is under way and reports the Moderna Vaccine may be associated with a higher risk of a heart condition, this in younger adults. Two people that are familiar with the review tell the Washington Post its likely a very rare side effect. The vaccine has not yet been authorized for use in adolescents. The fda is pushing to have the Pfizer Vaccine fully approved monday. This could pave the way for more organizations to mandate vaccines. Pfizer is also expected to request clearance for a third dose as a booster shot. Lets bring in dr. Celine gounder, infectious Disease Specialist and a frequent guest for us. We have the biden administration recommending all u. S. Adults who are fully vaccinated now get a booster shot. Why is that . Is it all about longterm efficacy . The cdc this week released three different studies looking at Vaccine Effectiveness in different populations. What we are seeing is an increased risk of breakthrough infections. The vaccines remain highly protective against severe disease, hospitalization and death. In fact, the study from new York State found that the vaccines remained 95 protective against hospitalization, which is really excellent. There are a couple populations where we do have concerns. The highly immunocompromised people, so these are people who have, for example, solid organ transplants, aids, who are on immunosuppressive medications, Nursing Home residents and the elderly. There is not good evidence to suggest there is a need for additional doses of vaccine for the general population, at least not yet at this time. On the heels of that last point, there are scientists, Health Experts that are pushing back not only to what you said, but they say that its immoral, in fact, to offer a third shot when most of the world is unvaccinated. You have the chief at the World Health Organization describing it this way. Were planning to hand out extra Life Jackets to people who already have Life Jackets, while were leaving other people to drown without a single life jacket. Whats your response to that . Look, this is not just a question of being a humanitarian or a moral or ethical argument. If you look at where variants emerge, they emerge where you have widespread transmission, so places like india this spring. That is where the Delta Variant emerged. Now its wreaking havoc here in the united states and causing us a lot of problems. So if you want to head off these kinds of issues, the emergence of new variants, you really do need to be vaccinating throughout the world, not just here in the united states. Lets talk about israel. Of course, it was the first country to offer booster shots. In fact, it has one of the worlds highest Daily Infection Rates now, even though most of its citizens are fully vaccinated. How does that happen . Israel is a cautionary tale for all of us. Over 60 of all people in israel have been fully vaccinated. Here in the united states here at about just over 50 . And despite their higher Vaccination Rates in israel, they are still seeing a surge driven by the emergence of the Delta Variant. Many of their younger people, so teens and 20s, are not yet vaccinated in israel. Something similar that we see here where younger people may not think that theyre at risk, have not yet gotten vaccinated, and throughout the pandemic we have seen younger people, because perhaps they think theyre at lower risk, but also they tend to be more social, to mix more with one another, they are significant drivers of transmission. So we really do need to be vaccinating a lot more, 60 in israel is clearly not doing the job. And we need to focus as well on our younger people. What about those Health Workers on the front lines that weve been hearing from . There are hardly any icu beds available in six states, those in red there, and then Icu Occupancy is above 80 in those ten yellow states you see. Here is one nurse who is clearly fed up. Im angry at everything. Im angry at patients who chose not to get vaccinated, im angry at the Health System for not being able to handle it, even if its not their fault. Im angry at myself for not having done more early in the pandemic. You can hear the frustration there. What conclusions do you draw as we watch these hospitals fill up again . I think its really important for people to understand that this is not just about covid. When you dont have hospital beds, enough hospital beds for everybody who comes to the hospital, your rates of death are going to go up. And so you might be coming in for a Heart Attack or stroke, but if the Emergency Room is full, if the icus are full, were not going to be able to take care of you as quickly as we would like. And that will result in bad outcomes for everybody all around. Doctor celine gounder, a sobering conversation, but i Thank You nonetheless. It is the Number One story in the Washington Post, the taliban is flaunting captured u. S. Weapons that may be worth billions. Can it use them . Breaking today, the president canceling his trip to gar after defending his decision to stick with the Trump Administration taliban agreement, as well as some of the chaos resulting from the withdrawal. The only rational thing to do in my view was to set up and preposition american forces for the purpose of evacuation. If we had decided 15 years ago to leave afghanistan, it would have been really difficult. If we decided five years ago, if we continued the war for another decade and tried to leave, theres no way in which we would be able to leave afghanistan without there being some of what youre seeing now. Joining me now, Ronald Newman who served as u. S. Ambassador to afghanistan from 2005 to 2007. Mr. Ambassador, Thank You for joining me, sir. You know this territory very well. Is President Biden right on this . Short answer, the question of leaving is one thing, and thats an arguable decision. But the manner of the leaving has been an absolute disaster, totally lacking in planning, executed faster than it needed to be, and in doing so, psychologically destroyed the confidence of the afghans. Much of the falling apart of the Afghan Army is also our fault, not to mention, of course, the backlog of Siv Visa applicants who could have been moved out much earlier and were not. So, no, i think the president is completely wrong and simply paid no attention to any of the advice he was given, including from all our nato allies who are now just ripping us, the british, french, germans, the whole British Parliament had a whole session attacking the decision and the president. Mr. Ambassador, what is this mistake about overall . Is it that somebody, the president or those in his administration, those advising him, took their eye off the ball . Because to your point, there were some tremendous warning signs, there was focus on this, there was anticipation that when we left things werent just going to go perfectly smoothly. For that matter, i was In Kabul just over a month ago. I wrote an article in the Washington Post in midjuly when i came back saying that this was at risk and if you look at the article, i said there are certain things we needed to do, none of which were done, and that this could go south much faster than we thought. It was a very messy evacuation situation. Speaking of that, sir, the White House is leaning very heavily on agreements with the taliban to allow safe passage of those who want to leave the country. Heres what former nato allied Commander Admiral had to say about this. Take a listen, sir. There are tens of thousands of people who need to get out. The taliban are around that airport. I think the only path forward to get the people in is going to be through the taliban. No one likes that, but were going to have to have a very direct dialogue with them, offering them some carrots and some sticks to open up the doors and let people in who want to leave. Likewise, sir, what are carrots and sticks that could be offered to the taliban to make them acquiesce from any sort of negative behavior, harmful behavior . What could they agree to where they would say, okay, you people can leave safely . First of all, you need to have a discussion with them to find out how much of the problem is the taliban. A lot of the problem of getting people to the airport is that there are masses of people trying to get out and theyre blocking the access. That has almost nothing to do with the taliban. Theres also an inner ring of security, afghan security personnel, and theres sometimes a problem, which is one of coordination, and i dont know what the problem is exactly, but thats not a taliban problem. It may well be that there are some things we have to offer, but this is the kind of thing you have to know on the ground by talking to them, how much theyre actually a problem. The british have gone out of the airport in some operations. There was one reported in the Washington Post this morning to actually bring people in. Ive heard weve brought people in from helicopter from one point In Kabul. There are a whole variety of ways in which you could move people. We also need areas to hold them. One of the problems is Kabul Airport is small. We gave up bagram, so we dont have a Staging Area adequate at Kabul Airport. Were reaping the sins of our past o missions. So negotiations with the taliban on the ground may well be necessary, and exactly what has to be offered, if anything because i dont know whether they really want to keep all of these people. But Thats Something youre going to have to look at in detail on the ground, not in talking heads on washington programs, with all due respect. Yeah. All right, former u. S. Ambassador to afghanistan, Ronald Newman, Thank You, mr. Ambassador. Appreciate your time. The taliban didnt defeat us. We defeated ourselves. Joining me now, political Strategist And Biden Campaign Consultant and a lease jordan, msnbc political analyst. She also worked at headquarters for the nato led mission In Kabul. As i welcome you both, elise, you spent time In Kabul. Was this deal a surrender . Do you see an alternative to what went down . Surely it was a weak deal. We had no room to negotiate, we had no leverage, because Donald Trump made it very clear that he wanted to get completely out and he would rush it along by making declarations that he wanted it pushed along even further and that will weaken the deal even more. But biden didnt necessarily have to accept the contours of this deal. Weve seen other agreements that trump negotiated and Joe Biden decided to get out of and not to pursue, and certainly republicans had no problem backing out of the agreement that President Obama negotiated. So while Donald Trump set the preconditions for not such a great deal, Joe Biden executed it. So he owns this. Based on what shes just saying here, elise is saying, how do you account for the way the biden administration has gone about this . You know, President Biden did say that regardless, he was going to make sure that we pulled out of afghanistan, and i would have to agree that he could have renegotiated the deal because at this Point Weve seen that no matter how we would have exited, whether now or in years to come, it would actually kind of disable what is happening over there. But there is a way for us to do it in not such a rushed way. We know trump rushed into the deal because he had some political gains, and had a reelection. But President Biden had a little more time and could have done this more delicately and thats where the criticism is coming from, even within our own party. Im hopeful what were seeing now is more a delicate approach to the urgent need to ensure that not only are we evacuating americans safely, but the afghans. The aboutface i referred to earlier, there are republicans who are now critical of the taliban deal. They publicly supported it at the time, and in fact others, according to axios, were even in the room during the negotiations. So how do they get to be architects and critics at the same time . Alex, this is par for the course. Republicans were willing to take whatever Donald Trump wanted to do and accept it, even if it was against their beliefs. Now, of course, theyre running away from it because its a humanitarian catastrophe. And right now the biden administration is failing a major test of competence. They have to figure out some way to calm the situation at the airport so that our afghan allies can exit the country safely. Right now that is not happening. Its less about these big Picture Questions of who got it wrong than how are they going to fix whats happening on the Ground Right at this very instance . Im Hearing Horror stories from too many afghans who are trying to get out and they cant because of the airport situation. Im hearing from americans who are stepping up from the private sector trying to help on the ground and how they are hearing from so many afghans who are trying to wait in the mob, who have broken limbs. Its a terrible, terrible situation and it doesnt have to be this way. Were the best military in the world. The biden administration should get this situation under control now. Im curious, though, with the vast majority of americans saying we did not want the United States Military to remain any longer, no more americans lives should be spent this, despite what were seeing, the tragedy, horror stories, were in the middle of it now and were going to be in it for a bit yet. But do you think longterm theres a chance that the biden administration will be credited in any way with having made the right decision . Well, i absolutely hope so. And, yes, we all agree that we didnt need to remain there. I think one of the things youre seeing from President Biden, who as the leader, understands this may not be my fault, but it is my greatest responsibility in order to make sure that we are exiting in a way where not only necessarily can we as a nation be proud, but lives can be saved, that a nation cannot be disabled so much that they feel like the people there have support. So i am optimistic that President Biden will hopefully get this right, him and his administration, because they are feeling this, too. Its not like hes approaching this and not caring whats happening in the region as the previous administration didnt care. He actually does care whats happening. And so i think youll see him continuing to modify and make sure that were able to exit in a way that saves more lives and not risk as many more. Quickly, elise, you mentioned those you have been speaking to that are In Kabul or elsewhere in afghanistan. Can you just give me a few adjectives to describe the way they are feeling, the way youre interpreting what theyre saying . Petrified. Theyre absolutely petrified because the situation at the airport, even if theyre In Kabul, it doesnt look like theyre going to be able to get there. There are other afghans who have worked for the united states who have not been granted visas or documents they need. The debacle of just simply getting to the airport if you have your documents and getting past taliban checkpoints to that mob where you risk being crushed, its tragic. Its a huge mess and i really hope that the White House appoints some czar to oversee and coordinate from all the different agencies that are involved in this and coordinate with our allies, our nato allies who are there and getting their citizens out, too. That organization needs to happen about an hour ago, if not sooner. Ladies, Thank You so much. Something big is missing from this years little League World Series. Were talking about the little League World Series where many of the players are too young to get vaccinated and their families are coming from across the country. Lets go to Dasha Burns in williamsport, pennsylvania, where the competition takes place every single year. Welcome to you. So there are a few big changes to the games this year. Can you tell us about them . Reporter alex, this event was canceled last year because of covid19, but now the beloved tradition is back. But it is not quite the same. The biggest change is pretty obvious here. Normally this plaza is packed with vendors, with team stores, with people, but this time around there are no fans allowed. Each time received 250 tickets to get Family Members and friends, but typically this Event Complex has about 300,000 people come through during the tenday event. This year theyre expecting about 2,000. Alex, the line at the concession stand here says it all. Normally people are elbowing each other to get hotdogs. This time, no wait at all. I got mine in about two minutes. This also comes with a litany of rules. Everyone indoors must be masked, anyone engaging with a player needs to be mask, including umpires. All nonTeam Members and attendees need to show proof of vaccination and all Team Members negligent to show proof of vaccination, or because as you mentioned so many of the kids arent eligible, they need to be tested every other day. Weve been talking to families, the coaches and players about what this experience has been like. I want you to hear from the coach of the Texas Team and his daughter happens to be one of the stars of this years tournament. Shes the only female player this time around. Last night she was just the third player in history to score multiple hits in one game. Take a listen to what he told me about this. I mean, its kind of bittersweet. Its an awesome moment for our kids to make it this far. At the same time, its not the same, and Little League is doing the best they can with the cards theyve been dealt. No fault on anybody. Were trying to make sure this experience happens for the kids. How are the kids dealing with the testing and the masking and all of the different Safety Measures here . The kids are really resilient. Theyre going to find joy in every opportunity they can get. So i dont think its phased them a whole lot. Theyre used to it now and i think they just want to get on the field and play baseball. Reporter alex, so many changes this time around. One thing, though, that has not changed, the enthusiasm. We watched Last Night and it was all about that for them. Thank you so much. A new and alarming report out today shows the impact of a Recordsetting Surge of deadly shootings that have hit louisville, kentucky, in the last year and a half. The metropolitan Police Department has reported 125 murders, 118 of those people were shot to death. The city is on pace to have more homicides this year than the past two years combined. Joining us with a break joun, i know, my friend, you did a lot of research for this story. What stands out most to you . Well, okay, so louisville is a city thats under siege. They have a homicide problem. They broke their Homicide Record last year by a very wide margin. Theyre on pace to do it again. And i would say that 55 of the murders this year have gone unsolved. That is just extraordinary. Let me ask you, isnt the fbi sending in agents . Theyre going to help with louisville Police Department deal with this. That seems most unusual. Somebody has to do something. It came out a couple of days ago that the fbi is going to be coming in trying to crack down on gangs and violent criminals. Something has to be done, because witnesses arent coming forward, the Police Department is 240 officers short, and the officers are really double booked when it comes to the caseload. And then also officers are kind of unwilling to engage because theyre afraid that the public doesnt have their back or the local government doesnt have their back, that if they come out and draw their weapon, that if somebody is shooting Cell Phone Video it will go viral. So you have officers trying to get out of the Police Department as soon as possible. Yikes. That is a perfect storm of a mess. When you say theyre 250 officers short, why . Well, its the same thing. Theres a lot of mistrust between the community after the brianna taylor shooting, the officers are just afraid to engage. Thats, of course, according to the Police Chief there, erica shields, who is in her first year overseeing the department. She came from the atlanta pd. Remarkable. Thank you so much. We will stay on top of the story and have you back as things develop. Thanks
