We have a team of reporters following the latest for you right now. Well begin with that monster storm, the latest guidance from the national Hurricane Center as kendis mentioned has tropical Storm Henri impacting the northeast later tonight, possibly making landfall as a category one hurricane. More than 4 Million people under a hurricane warning, with Storm Surges set to hit Long Island, connecticut as well as rhode island. Overnight tonight. Now officials across the northeast are urging residents to prepare for floods and possible Power Outages. Joining us right now is nbc News Meteorologist Michelle Grossman And Nbc meteorologist Janessa Webb in long beach, New York. Michelle, starting with you, the latest tracking we got a couple hours ago, were looking at what are we looking at in terms of possible paths and strength . Yeah, hi, good to see both of you. And we are looking at a very strong tropical storm right now. We anticipate its become a category 1 storm later on today and we also anticipate it to make landfall on Long Island as a category 1 storm. That hasnt happened in 36 years. Lets Take A Look at the warnings. They are quite literally warnings for today. Its the calm before the storm, so to speak, get everything prepared now for a hurricane, treat it like a tornado as well. Were going to see trees coming down with saturated ground. Hurricane warnings in the red. Montauk, new haven, islip. And all the way down to the jersey shore, point pleasant beach, be prepared as well too. This is the latest, this came out at 5 00. Next advisory at 8 00 and then 11 00 and then 2 00 p. M. Well see changes. Right now it is so close to a category 1 storm. Very strong with winds at 70 miles per hour. Its moving fairly quickly at 12 miles per hour to the North Northeast as we expected. It made that turn and its continuing to move through the north in those very warm bathlike waters. Thats why we expect it to blossom into a category 1 storm later on today. I stopped this clock also right near Long Island. So we do anticipate the national Hurricane Center anticipates this landfalling as a category 1 storm. This has not happened since hurricane gloria, i remember, it was on my birthday years ago, 36 years ago. So we could see another one as early as sunday. Lets go throughout time here. This is going to be the biggest problem with hurricanes you see heavy rainfall, you see Storm Surge, you also see very strong winds but with this storm, henri, we are looking at very slow moving systems. So its almost going to have the brakes put on it. By later on tonight were going to see the winds picking up. Even when were sleeping then Sunday Thats when were going to see the landfall as a category 1 storm. Those lines are increments of 12 hours. Its not moving very quickly, its almost in slow motion. And thats Bad News when you have tropical systems because it just allows that rainfall to pour over the same areas and, again, we are so saturated from fred that fell just days ago. So the grounds are saturated, trees are coming down, were going to see Power Outages. Monday at 2 00 a. M. , a tropical storm in connecticut, the Capital District of New York seeing heavy rains and then not moving very far until 2 00 p. M. On monday and then it takes that turn to the west by tuesday. Its out of here on tuesday and then we have the cleanup and we may still have Power Outages on tuesday, wednesday, into thursday. This is a Big One too. Storm surge. What is Storm Surge. Its a wall of water. Quite literally the winds push this water onto dry land. Janessa is going to talk more about this but we could see three to five feet of Storm Surge from South Hampton to new port. Thats a Big One too. Were watching this closely. But janessa will talk more about that. Well bring you in now, we know events have been cancelled on the baechl, officials are removing Life Guard stands and Garbage Cans so they dont essentially become projectiles. Yeah, lindsay, you know, whats disturbing about this system, in the cone right now, i have eight states that are going to be impacted. And these are states that are highly populated. Now new York City under some tropical storm watches, potentially going into a hurricane warning. So as this system is now expected to shift a little bit more west, right now we are seeing actually lovely conditions out here on long beach. People exercising. There was an Art Show that was expected for today that has been cancelled so a ton of events. And were in the dog days of summer. This was going to be one of the last weekends, even across marthas vineyard, that people just really want to be out and about on top of that its the weekend. And people are excited about that. Even though we are seeing great conditions i want to say, man, this is going to be a different story when i see you Tomorrow Morning as this Storm System starts to come in. Now, michelle was talking about how things will rev up overnight but you do have that circular motion that will allow some bands to really come in. Preparation is key. This is new York City from the boston area, populated places that are just not prone to hurricanes. We are talking about 36 years since weve seen a cat 1. I do want to mention, were going to see some rapid intensification with this system. And i will not throw it out of The Park that we might see a cat 2 hurricane as well. So regardless of the category of this Storm System these are areas that just arent ready and usually impacted by hurricanes and potentially a major hurricane. Yeah, the waters are really warm where the storm is right now. So the potential for strengthening is forecast. Janessa webb, and michelle grossman, thanks to both of you. To the escalating crisis in afghanistan, thousands are crowding the gates outside the Kabul Airport desperately trying to flee the country. U. S. Rescue flights are taking off again after an Eighthour Pause as more countries open their bases to host evacuees. Over the past 24 hours 6,000 people have been evacuated, bringing the number up to 13,000 since its operation started august 14. And this just coming in, these pictures and this event, afghan evacuees arriving at a u. S. Air base in germany. You see them getting off that bus right there. Nbc news foreign Correspondent Raf Sanchez has the details rngs good morning. Reporter were told 11 evacuation flights have landed at this Air Base carrying 1,500 people. Its the main base in western europe, housing around 5,000 people temporarily if it needs to. While the State Department figures out where to send them next. But guys, youve got to remember, when these afghan refugees come off these enormous military transport planes, they are hungry, they are exhausted, and theyre often a little confused about what is going on. Many of them dont speak english. So the first person who is sent out onto the tarmac to greet them is a united States Air Force imam, a muslim chaplain to tells them youre in germany, youre at an american Military Base and you are safe. I want to update viewers on traumatic footage they may have seen earlier. A United States Marine reaching over the Razor Wire atop the wall at Kabul Airport to scoop up an afghan baby being held aloft by its desperate parents in the crowd below. The marines say that baby is safe and well. It was treated inside the airport, and has been reunited with its family. Now President Biden yesterday speaking from the White House said both american citizens and afghan allies need to get themselves to the airport in order to be evacuated. The u. S. Military cannot go out into kabul, or further abroad, to pick them up. But that is proving more difficult than it first appeared. Were learning the u. S. Military was actually forced to send three chinook helicopters over the walls of the airport to a hotel nearby to rescue 169 americans who were stuck there. That group of americans did make it to the airport, but when they got there they found they were running up against that enormous crowd of People Clamoring to get in. They were not able to get through the gates, so the American Military had to go pick them up. The question now, will we end up seeing more and more of these kind of operations outside the wire as the taliban consolidates its hold in kabul, and those crowds get bigger at the airport . With us right now is democratic congressman Mike Quigley of illinois, he serves in a house select committee on intelligence. Good to see you again. You and your colleagues received an unclassified briefing just yesterday in afghanistan from lloyd austin, the secretary of defense. One of the things that i saw came out of it, there are reports that americans were harassed and beaten as they were trying to make their way to the airport. Yeah, obviously this is an extraordinarily difficult situation, and were getting a classified briefing from the Intelligence Committee first thing On Monday when we get back to washington, d. C. You know, its safe to say right now the Evacuation Plan was insufficient and what we need to do now is correct it on the fly, own it, and move forward because the work is so important. What was the reaction to that when you heard that from the Defense Secretary . Look, i think its beyond the fact the plan was insufficient. It was based on a premise that we were going to have more time, that a military that had shown no ability and no willingness to fight in all the time ive been briefed on this, the time i was in afghanistan, that they would somehow give us some time. So, you know, this was the right thing to do. The war needed to end. The conflict for us. Congressman but, you know, we needed a plan in place and a recognition that you werent going to have this kind of time so you see the chaos that ensues. Congressman, i dont mean to continue on this, but you had this report from the Defense Secretary that there were americans who were beaten and harassed by the taliban. Your reaction to that . Yeah, its unacceptable, and we need to provide safe passage to americans, finish the mission and its commitment. But those most vulnerable, those who helped us. My reaction is, again, this is unacceptable. It has to change and, again, were doing this under horrible circumstances on the fly. And i look forward to the continued briefings we get to understand how theyre making these changes. One of the consequences of this being on the fly, and we heard this from Raf Sanchez and last hour a former Army Captain the problem appears to be the chaos still thats outside the airport and the gates and people are being told to get to the airport but once they are they cant get into the military side where these planes are taking off. Is there anything that congress can or should do . We saw for example a nearby hotel people being Air Lifted out. What else needs to be done to cut down on all this chaos . Look, i think youre suffering the circumstances of the most complex Air Lift in u. S. And world history, probably, and the fact that youre doing it under the threat of the taliban. So having making sure that theres enough troops in place, and they understand the role here, to provide safe access to the airport. But unfortunately i dont know that things are going to get much better overnight. But we need to what congress needs to do is uphold the administration and those working on this accountable. I saw the best and worst of this. I saw what we saw now but i also saw ambassador kim when i was in albania working hard with her team and the albanian government to make sure there was room there as they were willing to accept these refugees. So its an incredibly complex process, congress needs to make sure the resources are there, and were in the same page with the administration to do this. Do you feel that the administration and the president , specifically, has been handling this well in the last week . Lets remember this was going to be this kind of chaos five years ago or five years from now. I believe a better plan could have been in place but the fact that it was premised on the notion that the Afghan Army would fight, had the ability or the willingness to do this, i think that was the key misjudgment. As a result youre going to have chaos that was going to be far worse. Also recognizing that he was dealt an extraordinarily bad hand by the previous administration and the agreement that they made, the surrender they made with the taliban and gutting the State Department, theres a lot of reasons that this was going to be difficult for this administration. And what i want to focus on now isnt were going to get to those tough questions and in The End the answers that need to come but right now i want to focus on making sure that those in afghanistan and the countries that were bringing these refugees have the resources they need and the mandate to do whats necessary to protect those who helped us, the americans there, the press, and all those who were most vulnerable at this time. Congressman, before we let you go, the president has said that if the taliban stands in the way of americans getting its people and its allies out safely that the taliban would be met with severe consequences. Is now the time for consequences . Absolutely. We have a commitment to those as part of our mission, and, you know, theres a reason our troops are there. Theyre not just to, you know i know theyre in harms way, and i think its time to appreciate and thank all those who gave their last full measure of devotion who have served in Gachb Stan for 20 years. What would those consequences look like . I think youd have to do whats necessary to ensure safe passage using the resources they have, making sure the taliban knows that the they will use force in if necessary. You have americans being beaten. So should this have turned into a Combat Mission . Im not on the ground, dont know exactly whats taking place there, but i think, again, they need to use the resources they have and their abilities to ensure the safety of those we are trying to get out of that country. Youve said the disaster theyre responding to here in mississippi is a disaster of our own making. Talk about what you mean by that. Good morning, thank you for having me. So we are hearing a lot about natural disasters All Around The World right now, you know, haiti is a prime example. Its hurricane season. What is especially tragic to me is that in fact the disaster that we are dealing with in our own backyard is, in fact, of our own making because we have not, as a state, done the things that we need to do to prevent us from being in this position right now. We have two Field Hospitals in garages. We are there. Then ambulances back up in the Emergency Departments because theyre overcrowded and theres no place to offload the patients. So a person from their home calls an ambulance and theres a delayed response because the ambulances are not available. Hospitals such as ours that are large and typically referral centers get to a point where they cannot take transfers. We are there. Hospitals put out Public Service announcements to the community to say, please do not come to our emergency room. We are there. And whats next is you get into a Mass Casualty Triage mindset where the patients continue to come despite all of this and exceed your capacity to care for them, and thats where you really get into the Mass Casualty Thinking and you realize that you may not be able to offer services to every patient that presents. Wow, and just so that were clear, a majority of the patients you are seeing are unvaccinated, right . Absolutely. The majority of the covid patients were seeing are unvaccinated. North of 90 . We are still seeing patients who have Heart Attacks and strokes. But in our covid hospitalized and icu patients, the vast majority are unvaccinated. Well, we know that theres a huge trickle down. Yeah, and i cant imagine the emotions that you and many of your Family Members are experiencing as you wait for word about your Family Members back there. Well, during the nighttime, we wake up, everybody, not only me, but all the other interpreters or the folks who work with them here in the states they wake up and we hear the stories, they wake up during the night, two or three times to check their phones, if they receive anything from them. Yeah, there were all these reports of people that the taliban members were knocking Door To door. Are you hearing that as well from your family and friends back there . Yes, yes. Thats got to be terrifying. It really is. Even though the other day they killed two of the interpreters, and they went Door To door and asked for their Family Members, and they tortured them. Yeah, it is a horrible situation. I want to get your reaction onto some Breaking News we are getting in right now about the situation in afghanistan. This is a reporter from the White House post. Saying because of potential Security Threats, from the u. S. Embassy in kabul, Security Threats outside the gates at the Kabul Airport the embassy is advising u. S. Citizens to avoid traveling to the airport, and to avoid Airport Gates at this time unless they receive individual instructions from a u. S. Government representative to do so. Of course, that is in reference to u. S. Citizens, not going there. Your situation is Family Members and friends not making that journey to the airport. But by that alert that was just sent out by the u. S. Embassy in kabul. It would seem as if this situation is not in control. Well, we need a proper ic mechanism, a proper system for this. People are still waiting and theyre desperately looking for help. Okay, that even most of the people that cannot make it even though, you know, the embassy say do not travel to the airport, but what should they do . If they live somewhere, if they stay, they will get killed. The only proper way that they think is going to the airport, and at least get into the airport, but if they dont get it, how long should they wait . Mr. Biden said that by The End of the month they will withdraw everybody but i dont think so. There are thousands of people still waiting. You work with the No One left behind nonprofit that helps afghan allies of the u. S. Cut through the Red Tape involved with getting visas in the u. S. , what are you seeing given this Mass Evacuation of afghans, are you able to cut through any of that Red Tape . So we help like 70 applicants to get into the airport, and fly. But so our own each of our ally in, you know, who honorably serve the country, they should get the visa. And, you know, their families just feel the american dream. You helped serve in the u. S. Over there in afghanistan. Do you feel as if the u. S. Failed you and your family . At some point, yes, they did fail me. You know, they promised us that they will bring our families down here, but we see that those promise are not being felt yet and fulfilled. You know, ive worked for them for the past four years, and ive been its okay that ive been here and were living in the states now for years now, and im a proud afghanamerican, and an active member of the community.
