Richard engel has the latest from kabul. Reporter Tens Of Thousands of afghans swarmed into Kabul Airport, desperate to leave at any price. They burst through security. Climbed over walls. And spilled onto the tarmac. Searching for any airplane that would take them far away from afghanistan. Away from the taliban. So many managed to cram into one plane, the pilot refused to take off. People on board refused to disembark. But it was across a Barb Wire Divide where it turned really ugly. On the military side of the airport, american troops trying to evacuate u. S. Embassy staff found themselves overwhelmed, suddenly battling crowds, firing warning shots. This was not the mission they came for. The pentagon says u. S. Troops shot dead two armed afghans. But still the crowds didnt disperse. Instead they ran along and clung to the undercarriage of a military Transport Plane as It Taxied for takeover. One official told me it was worse than the humiliating american pullout from saigon. Afghans are running from the taliban, now in full control, setting up checkpoints with the very weapons the american taxpayers bought for the afghan army. After the u. S. Pulled out of bases and left them without Air Support. And the u. S. Didnt see this coming . We reported on the tremendous Security Vacuum created when the u. S. Left Bagram Air base two months ago leaving it so undefended and empty i was able to bike down the runway. The Warning Signs were there. And this weekend, kabul was taken without resistance, and the afghan president fled. Still in the country are Tens Of Thousands of afghan interpreters marked for death by the taliban who were taking their males in the president ial palace, settling in, celebrating their victory. American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves. So im left again to ask of those who argue that we should stay, how many more generations of americas daughters and sons would you have me send to fight afghanistans Civil War when afghan troops will not . How many more lives, american lives, is It Worth . How many endless rows of headstones at Arlington National Cemetery . We will continue to support the afghan people. We will lead with our diplomacy, our international influence and humanitarian aid. We will push for engagement to prevent violence and instability. Well continue to speak out for the basic rights of the afghan people, of women and girls. Just as we speak out all over the world. Ive been clear, the Human Rights must be the center of our foreign policy, not the pe riff rae. But the way to do it is not through endless military deployments. Youve written for the postabout how republicans have set aside their differences on ending the War In Afghanistan to focus on attacking President Biden. What can you tell us . Thats exactly right. You know, if you want to think back to several years ago, republicans were actively and vocally critical when president donald trump, in 2018, said that he would withdraw troops from afghanistan. That was probably the one of the biggest breaking points in real time between congressional republicans and also trumps own administration. That was a big reason why you saw then Defense Secretary James Mattis resign. Even at that time republicans acknowledged we can be critical, Senator Lindsey Graham, someone who can easily dial up then President Trump. He was trying to convince him not to withdraw from afghanistan, using a lot of what weve heard from him, that something like this in afghanistan, this vacuum, could occur and the taliban could take over again. But, you know, they very much understood that there wasnt any convincing that they could do to tell President Trump otherwise. To tell him, hey, this isnt a good idea. Trump was going to go forward with that decision. So they didnt really use it as a political issue because why would you want to attack the president of your own party. So now that biden, a democratic president , has taken the same course of action and youre actually seeing the repercussions of a quick and hasty withdrawal from afghanistan, they are using all that same criticism, youre also seeing trumpera republicans amplify that criticism and targeting a democratic president , President Biden. So it shouldnt be necessarily surprising to see that, but now were seeing it become a political issue. Especially over on the House Side where many republicans kind of, you know, going back to and falling back on the same criticisms during the campaign. You heard senator Ben Sasse say, where is biden, where is he hiding . That is a big thing you and i remember when we were covering biden that they tried to hit on his own cognition, if he was mentally okay, where is he . What is he doing . So those are kind of the same messages that sorry, i just got something in my eye, that were likely going to hear. Its 5 00 a. M. It happens. Yes. That is a Job Hazard at this hour, No One here is judging you whatsoever. Forgetting the internet lives forever, a republican page removed a page praising President Trump for the idea. Many journalists have been asking republicans whenever they get the chance, hey, remember trump did the same thing . He had the same priorities and in some ways laid the Ground Work for something like this to happen . We heard only Senator Lindsey Graham say, you know, the Trump Administration does bear some blame. However, many republicans tend to say, you know, when trump was in office, i got assurances from the Trump Administration that they definitely werent going to do this. And they do in some ways benefit from that hypothetical, that we never really did see trump pull out from afghanistan. So we dont know how a Trump Administration would have handled it. But for the most part, they are skirting that question and pinning the blame directly at biden. And its fair to say that many democrats are doing that as well when it comes to trying to at least get a number of americans that are still in the country out, as well as, and most importantly, to many members of congress, those afghan interpreters and anyone who really helped us in the 20 years that the u. S. Was in afghanistan. One more quick one. Across the aisle. How is this playing out across democrats . Are we seeing is this dividing the caucus or are people staying in line with President Biden . Its interesting. The White House did try to circulate a number of Talking Points on a number of those issues, whether it is evacuations, bidens decision, and how to get those interpreters into the united states. They sent that around around noon yesterday. You saw a number of democrats actually not necessarily listen to those Talking Points. Really the only thing that theyre defending Biden On is, sure, maybe this outcome would have happened, it didnt matter if it was previous President S or future President S, its their decision to pull out of afghanistan, it could have created a moment like this. However, they are hitting biden. Theyre critical of the administration. Saying that, you know, weve been asking for answers for some time, weve demanded briefings, we wanted to know more about how congress could help. They did pass that piece of legislation that you mentioned. But even so, this had happened a lot quicker and you saw biden admit to that, that the administration was taken back by how quickly the taliban had taken over the country. So now youre likely to see bipartisan calls to investigate or oversight to understand what happened and make sure something like this ever happens again if were ever involved in another country and then withdraw. And many, many people, to include many representatives in congress, were sounding the Alarm Bells as far back as basically May 1st when President Biden announced this decision. Ive seen that clip you played at the introduction, every american should watch that clip and every american should be absolutely ashamed and apalled by the coming out of kabul. How do you think this should have happened . What do you think President Biden should have done and whats your overall reaction to how the president , a very defiant speech, delivered this News Yesterday . His Speech Yesterday was filled with boldfaced lies. First and foremost, the administration planned for every contingency. There was a bipartisan letter signed by more than 30 members of congress months ago, before the summer began, warning what would happen to our afghan allies when the taliban came into kabul and took over the Country And Pleading with the administration to put forward a plan how to evacuate them. That letter was met with silence from the administration. So the warnings have been there. Further more, the idea that were going to blame this on our afghan allies and say, as the president did, that they refused to fight for their country is an insult to them, to every service member, to include me, who fought alongside those afghan allies for years. The Afghan Military has taken more killed and wounded in a single year than the united states has taken in 20. So to insinuate, they are in some way cowards, refused to fight is an insult. And further more to insinuate they cannot stand on their own is an insult. The taliban is backed by the pakistani, iran and now the chinese. So to tell them we will not support our afghan allies in any way shape, or form whatsoever is a shame on our honor. What are your fears to what happens next in afghan to interpreters there, afghan citizens, and do you think that country could once again start providing Safe Harbor to terror groups looking to hit the west . I think afghanistan is going to turn into a Black Hole, if it isnt a Black Hole already. I think theres a very high likelihood whatever crawls out of that Black Hole will strike at the west and the united states. Afghanistan is an essential country sits at a key strategic Cross Roads and the united states has always existed in the world as a national power. The biden administration needs to get planes to kabul, onto the tarmac and put into those planes those who applied for visas and worked directly with our military over the last two decades, get them, their families and others who are eligible for s. I. V. Protections, as well as Refugee Protections and get them to a place like guam. Right now the biden administration has spent too much time looking for a third country to house applicants and others. Get them to guam, the u. S. , the Defense Department Yesterday announced there are a number of s. I. V. Applicants that could be in wisconsin and texas. The wheels are starting to move but they have to move quicker. We heard from canadas prime minister, justin trudeau, that they would accept a large number of refugees from afghanistan. What can the u. S. Do . How would they assist with the refugees and what would that look like . I think the u. S. Has to rally the international community and ensure s. I. V. Applicants but just as importantly refugees because we are going to see an uptick in the flow of refugees from afghanistan. Rally the international community to move resources to the u. N. So refugees can be protected and processed and in the case of the united states, move forward with the P2 Designation of refugees so people dont have to go through the regular vetting and process, rather go through the u. S. For vetting and processing. Put the political and financial capital on the table to get people out. We saw heart breaking images from the Kabul Airport yesterday, some of which are on the screen. What fears do you have, worries do you have about what happens to those left behind, they cant get out through official channels, what recourse do they have . Where can they go . How do they get out of the country . What strikes me about yesterday is not just the pictures we saw in kabul on the tarmac at the airport but the pictures we did not see. Theres an untold number of people who worked directly for our military, helped them indirectly or eligible for Refugee Classification outside of kabul and they have no way to get to kabul safely. So what happens to them . If theyre lucky theyll get out of the country but most cases in a place like pakistan who has 1. 4 million registered refugees, iran, turkey, trying to make their way to europe.
