To brIng leaders of the talIban, to camp davId, for peace talks. It was a wIld and grossly offensIve Idea. As the Imarsana.com/news/new-york-tImes'>New York TImes descrIbed a quote, the leaders of a rugged mIlItary organIzatIon, deemed terrorIst by the unIted states, would be hosted In that mountaIn getaway, used for Imarsana.com/news/presIdent-s'>PresIdent S, Imarsana.com/news/prIme-mInIsters'>PrIme MInIsters and kIngs. Just three days before the annIversary of the september 11, 2001 attacks, that led to the afghan war. Its not just Imarsana.com/news/joe-bIden'>Joe BIden, Its not even just donald trump, Its been 20 years of gaslIghtIng, Incompetence In bad polIcy. From four Imarsana.com/news/presIdent-s'>PresIdent S. From both partIes. JoInIng me now, InvestIgatIve reporter for the washIngton post. And author of the forthcomIng, both the afghanIstan papers. A Imarsana.com/news/secret-hIstory'>Secret HIstory of the war. In an InvestIgatIve reporter Imarsana.com/news/new-york-tImes'>New York TImes magazIne contrIbutIng wrIter, she was last enough dentIst and back In 2019, reportIng from Imarsana.com/news/battlefIeld-provInces'>BattlefIeld ProvInces. Thank you both for joInIng me thIs evenIng. CraIg let me start wIth you. Is It faIr to say that based on all your reportIng, especIally those leaked documents you got a Imarsana.com/news/hold-of'>Hold Of In 2019, the afghan papers. We relIed too, by Imarsana.com/news/presIdent-s'>PresIdent S of both partIes, by generals, by dIplomats, for 20 years . They knew everythIng about the afghan army In the government, none of thIs could come In a surprIse to them shortly. No It dIdnt. One mInor correctIon, those documents werent leaked. We assume the federal government for three years, under the freedom of Imarsana.com/news/InformatIon-act'>InformatIon Act for to obtaIn. Them thIs was not a leak, thIs was oldfashIoned reportIng. But youre absolutely rIght. Every presIdent Ial admInIstratIon, datIng back to the bush years, they havent been forthrIght wIth the amerIcan people, about a number of thIngs, but one of the most astonIshIng ones from these documents we obtaIned, where the number of generals In ambassadors, and Imarsana.com/news/whIte-house'>WhIte House offIcIals who acknowledged that they dId not have any clue as to how thIngs worked In afghanIstan, they lIke the fundamental Ignorance of how thIngs operated there, they dId not have a strategy. In really they thought the war was unwInnable. Yet In publIc they told the amerIcan people, that they were makIng progress. That they were placIng turns In the road. But they were always movIng ahead. No Imarsana.com/news/one-weve'>One Weve seen the past few days, Is obvIously the complete opposIte of realIty. For me those publIc statements, especIally In hIndsIght or unforgIvable. As the Imarsana.com/news/door-agreement'>Door Agreement that trump sIgned In Imarsana.com/news/february-2020'>February 2020 wIth the talIban. There Is not one word In theIr about Imarsana.com/news/human-rIghts'>Human RIghts or protectIng women. Not one. So Isnt that a bIt rIch, for Imarsana.com/news/republIcans-today'>RepublIcans Today to try to play the emotIonal blackmaIl card, about all the poor afghans that were abandonIng. There are so many afghans who are beIng banded, partIcularly In kabul. There are people who have worked wIth amerIcans, there are translators. There are journalIsts. There are female actIvIsts who are a great rIsk. At the same tIme, acknowledgIng thIs huge enormous cost to IncredIble people, who have seen so much progress over the last 20 years, especIally women and gIrls In kabul In major urban centers. But you often dont get talked about, or the women and gIrls, who lIve In rural areas. Now, nearly three quarters of afghanIstan populatIon, Is the rural countrysIde. These are IndIvIduals, who many of them women and gIrls, who have one and a stop to the war for a long tIme, Its kIlled chIldren, Its kIlled loved ones, women, mothers who have defIned a lot of theIr lIves, through motherhood, have lost chIldren In aIrstrIkes, In nIght raIds, In talIban attacks, they belong wanted Into the war, so I thInk when you talk about women and gIrls In afghanIstan, In who are leavIng behInd, oftentImes, that majorIty of the populatIon, In the rural countrysIde, whIch Is been payIng Is really hIgh cIvIlIan costs, are taken Into account. Very true. Crack, general after general, a mere prevented amerIcan Imarsana.com/news/presIdent-s'>PresIdent S from pullIng out of afghanIstan. They pressured them to stay. Do we really need real accountIng of our mIlItary defense Imarsana.com/news/establIshments-power'>EstablIshments Power In thIs country . The power that wheels behInd the scenes, as Imarsana.com/news/you-clumsIness-documents'>You ClumsIness Documents . I thInk thats Important. UnlIke the Imarsana.com/news/9-11'>9 11 attacks, where we dId have a publIc accountIng of how those attacks happened, how those Imarsana.com/news/terrorIst-attack'>TerrorIst Attacks came to be. How we mIssed all the warnIng sIgns, we had thIs very extensIve Imarsana.com/news/9-11'>9 11 commIssIon report testImony. We have not had that for the afghan war. We all along, each presIdent had saId, were wInnIng or goIng to wIn. Bush, obama, trump all saId were goIng to wIn. Even though the sIgns were at best we can hope for Is a stalemate. There hasnt been accountIng. And congress has been mIssIng In actIon on that too. Yes, It defInItely has. One last questIon for you. You mentIoned the rural areas In women partIcular who lIve In the rural areas. I wonder how much of that plays Into what weve seen over the past few days . ThIs Idea that the talIban can just take bIg areas, because all the people In the rural areas, they dIdnt feel any attachment to the government and campbell. For them maybe, well It doesnt matter whos In charge. TheIr lIves remaIn pretty poor, and pretty desperate. Its Important to understand how the unIted states lead, or held up thIs tenuous afghan state. And Its largely through aIr support. Through IncredIble bombIngs, In fact the unIted states dropped more bombs In afghanIstan In 2019, than In any prevIous year of the war. So thIs war was contInuIng at Imarsana.com/news/record-pace'>Record Pace. And that government, the afghan government, was beIng held up by aIr strIkes. At the same tIme, those aIrstrIkes were IsolatIng In ostracIzIng local populatIons. These are massIve bombIngs. I have been to places In Imarsana.com/news/kandahar-and-helmand'>Kandahar And Helmand where people have descrIbed some of the most gruesome In vIcIous attacks, losIng more than a dozen of members of theIr own famIly. In sIngle IncIdents. And these were happenIng at Imarsana.com/news/record-pace'>Record Pace In 2019. WhIle the negotIatIons were happenIng. Thats a bIg part of. At the same tIme, was also not happenIng In these areas. In 2015, I spent a lot of tIme InvestIgatIng u. S. Funded schools In Imarsana.com/news/battlefIeld-provInces'>BattlefIeld ProvInces In afghanIstan. LookIng over 50 of them. In seven of these Imarsana.com/news/battlefIeld-provInces'>BattlefIeld ProvInces. And I found that Imarsana.com/news/It-majorIty'>It MajorIty of them are fallIng apart. 10 of them had never been buIlt. When I would dIg Into why, In many cases, It wound up that the contract to buIld that school, was gIven to a local warlord. Who Is abusIng the local populatIon. Or the school was mIssIng, It turns out, every level the counterterrorIsm was erodIng these goals, that thIs progress thats often touted. The proud stIcks that was touted Is what theyre. Its comparIng a recent days. We wIll have to leave It. There thank you both for your reportIng In your analysIs. As we saw, those harrowIng Images of afghans at the aIrport In kabul, desperate to flee theIr country, just a remInder of how many people are at rIsk, when the talIban Is now back In power. That of course Includes afghans who worked for the unIted states government. As well as Imarsana.com/news/famIly-members'>FamIly Members of those who have gone agaInst the talIban. LIke the famIly of the fIrst female fIxed wIng pIlots In the afghan aIr force. And saw asylum here In the unIted states In 2018. After receIvIng threats from the talIban. I left spoke wIth, her three days ago. On frIday. NIght when kabul was stIll In the hands of the afghan government. TonIghts, kabul Is In the hands of the talIban. Her famIly Is deeply worrIed about theIr safety. She joIns me now. Thank you so much for comIng back on the show. How Is your famIly doIng tonIght . Have you been able to be In contact wIth them . Are they safe . Thank you for havIng. Me and thank you everyone for theIr support. Let me start by sayIng how many afghans In afghanIstan are at terrIfIed. Every Imarsana.com/news/afghan-people'>Afghan People are terrIfIed wIth the sItuatIon. And we have all seen the pIctures, that Is publIshed on Imarsana.com/news/socIal-medIa'>SocIal MedIa. That every afghan, they lIve under that sItuatIon, under the talIban, under the regIme they, preferred to dIe and that lIve under that. I hear recently everybody talks about how afghans should have defended themself. I absolutely agree wIth that. But the problem Is, the afghan presIdent a banded Imarsana.com/news/afghan-people'>Afghan People. In afghan soldIers, wIth no logIstIc, wIth no aIr support, Its hard for them to defend the country, to defend themselves. CIvIlIans they cannot defend themselves. And IncludIng those, my famIly Is part of that. And of course, talIban Is goIng to destroy every symbol of freedom, for women, that amerIca brought. And of course, I am one of the vIctIms of that. In I am deeply concerned, for my famIlys lIfe. There Is well. And you mentIoned the Images on Imarsana.com/news/socIal-medIa'>SocIal MedIa comIng out today. What was your Imarsana.com/news/reactIon-today'>ReactIon Today when you saw those afghans runnIng alongsIde the u. S. MIlItary plane . ClIngIng onto. It thats how desperate they are to get out of the country. I can express my feelIng. It has been a terrIble tIme for me, absolutely. I love my people, I love my country. But I dont lIke what I see. Because those afghans, as I mentIoned, they are ready to be dyIng that way. To flee and go, and just lIve that lIfe. But not lIve under the talIbans law. Because 20 years ago, they lIved, and they know how It was lIke. They were already goIng Imarsana.com/news/door-to'>Door To door. They are lookIng for the people that they work wIth foreIgners. They are lookIng for the pIlots, lookIng for theIr famIlIes. LookIng for the Interpreters. Its terrIble to see that sItuatIon. AfghanIstan fall In kabul, In one day. In Its really scary to even look and see, as an afghan woman. I am actually so scared for all of the women In afghanIstan. In a wIsh, and Im sayIng It from the bottom of my heart, that I wIsh I could help them. One last questIon, as we watch the Imarsana.com/news/afghan-securIty-forces'>Afghan SecurIty Forces collapse, vIrtually In front of arIse, a lot of people across thIs country want to know what happened . DId those forces collapse. You are part of the Imarsana.com/news/afghan-mIlItary'>Afghan MIlItary for a tIme. DId they collapse because they dIdnt want to fIght for a corrupt government In kabul. Or where they just not capable of fIghtIng the talIban . I can say both, afghan government, fIrst, presIdent of the country, leader of a country, that should be the last person leavIng the country. That person left and abandon the country. The soldIers, the army. They are not motIvated. Plus, they dont have the equIpment. Just as I mentIoned. The army. They cannot defend themselves. Just by goIng In and fIghtIng. So aIrstrIkes, logIstIcs, thIs was all part of It. And I would lIke to mentIon one more last thIng we. As an afghan woman, I would lIke for Imarsana.com/news/presIdent-bIden'>PresIdent BIden to hear me, the government to hear me. Please, save the famIlIes, that they need. You the women, the lIttle gIrls, they always lookIng up to the unIted states, a great army that the unIted states brought to afghanIstan. And also please save my famIly, In the world rIght now, watchIng. Please. How would you feel, how would you sleep. If you would see on the tv, that the talIban are takIng, 8 10 nIne year old gIrls. As theIr slaves. And they are takIng them away from theIr famIlIes. I just ask everybody, to pray for them, and toplease help them. I cannot ImagIne what you must be goIng through tonIght. We apprecIate you takIng tIme to speak wIth us. Thank you so much. Thank you for havIng me.
