Airport. Well take stock of what is happening on the ground and well answer questions that you submitted online about why this happened and what could happen next. Im Joshua Johnson. Welcome to the week. Let us begin with a look back at the monumental events that took place in afghanistan today. Taliban fighters marched into kabul, Intent On taking full control of the capital city. They faced little resistance as they entered the president ial palace. Their flag now flies in place of the afghanistan flag. Meanwhile the american flag no longer flies over what was the u. S. Embassy. Diplomats removed it as they and Embassy Person wrestle removed by helicopter. The president of afghanistan fled the country saying that he did so to spare the city from additional violence. Just in time, too. Commercial flights out of afghanistan are suspended. That blocks a key Escape Route for finally citizens still inside the capitol. Our mission is to make time for clarity is that context. We have spent all day telling you whats going on. In this hour, it is time for to us listen. You have sent us an array of good, smart questions that how we got here, what comes next, and much more. Thank you. So for sending them. We will spend this Hour Answering as many as we go. If you know someone who has been asking you questions about all this, tell them to tune in. Weve got so much Town Pack from this historic day. First lets get latest from Nbcs Bureau Chief who joins us live. Ali, what are people In Kabul waking up to this morning . Reporter hi, people are waking up to a new regime in afghanistan. One that was ousted 20 years ago because of this tyranny cal rule. Theyve taken it over without much of an effort. They are in the president ial palace, the afghan flag has been taken down and the taliban flag is flying there. The president , or should i now stay former president of afghanistan has fled. The Security Forces have essentially all fallen apart. And the taliban are in control of kabul is that other cities. What was left of the Security Forces have shed their afghan government uniforms and they are either wearing talibantype clothes or regular clothes, just to blend in. Because everybody there knows now it is all over. And of course, with the taliban taking over. In country, it is also triggered an exodus, a desperate exodus from the country, trying to get anywhere they can and obviously, many are pouring into iran where i am now which shares this long, porous border with afghanistan. Theyre desperate to get out of the country. The iranian government here has set up three makeshift camps for Afghan Refugees along the border. And theyre waiting to see just how many people are going to flood into this country. Theres already about 2. 5 million afghans here. That number will go up dramatically. And many of the finallies that work here, that have been here for many years, are making desperate calls for anybody to borrow some money or make a call to a contact they know to help get their wives, their children, and other family members, afghanistan, willing to leave everything behind just to get their family over here. And it is also triggered some pretty extraordinary scenes. We saw yesterday, this amazing video of Afghan Military pouring into iran with advanced equipment and vehicles. They were probably supplied by the u. S. That the iranian Defense Ministry will be happy to get its hands. On of course, the iranian government said theyre not taking any sides. Theyre not supporting the taliban. Nor are they against them. They have put a call out to the taliban, asking them to protect iranian personnel In Kabul and herat. So there is some irony there that the u. S. Who have been in afghanistan for 20 years are frantically evacuating, but the iranian personnel are staying put In Kabul and herat. Thank you. Thats the chief just west of afghanistan which shares an east West Border with iran. Lets dive into your questions now. With matt zeller, a former Craft Analyst and the author of watches without time. An american soldier in afghanistan. Also with us, kevin barron, the Executive Editor of defense one. We appreciate you being with us. We have lots and lots of good questions including some very good smart basic questions what is going on. Lets begin with a question from Hypo Crazy 104 on twitter. They write simply, why did we go into afghanistan in the first place . Kevin, could we start with you . Just give us the quick 101. Remind us how we got to this. Thats a real Eye Opening first question. Thats where our real Starting Point is with the american conversation. We got into afghanistan because thats where the terrorists of 9 11 trained and attacked us from. And the immediate response was sending u. S. Special forces into afghanistan to basically link up with friendly forces there and go after the terrorists. Specifically, Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden who was believed to be hiding there. Im guessing the cia has a much fuller answer than i do. I was going to come to you with the next part, how we are getting out. Marylandin from instagram says, if not now, when should we have gotten out . Was not it inevitable . I dont blame biden or any past president. I just think this is what was going to happen. Im praying for those afghanistan women and children. We will talk more about them. But what about her question . If not now, when . Wasnt it kind of inevitable this might happen . Unfortunately, it clearly was. When i served in 2008, i had a succinct feeling we had lost then. I got to meet my enemy once. It was after a battle in which we killed a certain number of Taliban Fighters and there was only one guy left alive and i got to talk to him. I asked why he was fighting us. I explained he couldnt beat me in a battle. It just killed all of his buddies. I had more military might. Why was he fighting me . I wanted to know that. And he pointed at me watch and he said, you americans have all the watches. We have all the time. And i knew what he meant was, he was trying to say, they meant to outbleed us. They knew eventually we would tire of this and want to go away. I saw from the Afghan Military that it would take at least a generation to train them and we would probably lose interest. Heres whats so tragic. At the beginning of this year, we had 2,500 troops in afghanistan. We had not suffered a casualty in a very long time and we still controlled every single major city. Those women you care about, their futures are over. The afghan government is gone. Thats frightening. This is not the taliban of the people in 90s. That taliban took over a country devastated by a Civil War and had a couple of tanks. This taliban, they now have more helicopters than 166 other nations on the planet to include australia. They have an Air Force. They have armed drones. They have all that Military Equipment that you saw pouring into iran, they have that tenfold he have where. With regard to that, that gets to a question from terry who tweeted, i want to know, after 20 years, what has changed for the better . How long should american troops be expected to give up their lives for an unwinnable war . Lets break this into two parts. Why dont you take the first part. What has changed for the better if anything . Thats a Twopart Question and a loaded one. There are lots of thing that have changed for the better. The taliban then is different than the one were seeing today and so is the country. There are a lot of Aid Workers who point to women first and foremost. That say, look, women couldnt go to school before and under the united states, and now the past afghan government, women did go to school and they went in droves. They had better rights. Not perfect rights but better rights. There are women in leadership positions. There was something different hapgs. Greater agricultural production. Greater international community behind them. There are a lot of things that were better but also rampant Corruption And Afghanistan still remained one of the least developed countries on the face of the earth. This is the country where we were sent in to train a military to become a better military. I also spent a lot of time going in and out, being briefed by command heres said, look, this Population Cant even read. They dont understand the numbers are written on the checks that are meant to pay them. I remember meeting one special Operations Soldier who said that they realized when they were talking on counter parts one evening under the stars that the afghans they were speaking to didnt have a concept of the solar system. So the gap from zero to whatever the goals were, including a functioning Air Force government, governance, was monumental. But things have changed. Things were better for a whole lot of finallies. This is not just a bad News Story until today. That gets to the second part of the question about how long american troops should be expected to give up their lives for an unwinnable war. Understanding, of course, baked into the question, is that the war is unwinnable. Considering what kevin told us, i wonder if you think this could have gone any other way. As long as the military stayed there, we protected the status quo. I would argue that what is transpiring is far worse. Let me ask your viewers this. I wanted this war to end. I have a daughter. Shes 9. If it had gone on. Longer, she could have fought in it and shame on us for that. It was like if i fought in vietnam when i graduated from high school. If were a country that counts on human rights, that means sometimes defending them at the Barrel End of a gun. If people who have taken over afghanistan are as evil as the nazis. Theyre conducting mass executions. They make people come to the stadiums and watch it. Women in herat are now banned from going to work and that is a common theme across the country. I Cant Help but think that what has transpired is truly awful. What i am most concerned about is not tonight 10,000 american citizens who are still currently trapped in afghanistan. Some of whom are my own family. Ill also worried about the over 90,000 Afghan War Time Allies and their family members, the interpreters, truck drivers, the i. T. Workers, to people who picked up our trash. All of those people will be sentenced to death. Im sorry to interrupt you. You mentioned people trapped in afghanistan including your family . Have you been able to make contact with them . Do you know what condition theyre in . You might have looked at me at the beginning, seeing me look down at my phone. Yeah. Theyre alive. I have a cows at the airport and another relative trapped in the city. And im trying to get them out. This is personal for a lot of us. These are people who i was just talking to a guy i served with in the war. His name is chuck. Hes probably watching. He told me, he called the veterans hotline tonight. Not because he was feeling suicidal. He just needed to talk to somebody. I might call later, too. This is triggering a lot of things. One. Those is that these are people. Just because they werent born in america doesnt mean that they should not be protected as americans. When i came home from the war, i had the luxury of coming back to the best country on the planet. These people went on to the next mission and the next. For that the taliban will kill them. Im sorry you have to have this conversation with us while this is heading over your head. If you need to dip out and take a call, we obviously understand. I appreciate you being able the talk to us with b that, as hard as it is. And to answer these questions, well get more into these in a minute. Coming up, well dive into how we got here with afghanistan and what we should expect going forward. The situation in afghanistan has been changing fast. It didnt take long for Taliban Fighters to take over provinces across that country. Today Afghanistans President ghani fled as taliban entered the capital. New video shows them inside the palace. This all happened despite the united states pouring 83 Billion into training and equipping afghan forces. This is what that investment was men to prevent. How did we get here . Were back matt zell we are the afghan Security Forces and kevin barron, and joining our panel is kristen, a u. S. Earl Veteran And Board member of iraq and afghanistan veterans of manager. Good to have you with us. Let me start back up with you and something that President George W. Bush said back in 2001. He said, quote, ultimately, one of the best weapons, one of the truest weapons we have against terrorism is to show the world the true strength of Character And Kindness of the american people, and that the american people were united in the fight against terrorism as well as in their concern for the innocent people of afghanistan. How does that statement look now 20 years later . Its one that still resonates and thats the pain of this. So many of us, i was already serving in the reserve when 9 11 happened. I remember the unity and the patriotism that people felt after 9 11, and so many people signed up after 9 11. And we felt like we were serving our country. We were standing against the people who attacked us. We were preventing any Terror Attack from ever happening again in afghanistan. And through our experience in afghanistan, we got to know finallies. We got to see the damage from war with other competing interests have caused, the illiteracy, the lack of economic development and we wanted to help. We built relationships, partnerships, we made friends west made strong friendships. And we worked with the army. We worked on humanitarian aid. We did all of these things. And i for one really believed in it. I believed in a better afghanistan. That i believe helping afghanistan be better, modernize, get folks educated, get the media stood up, the army, police, that this really was an expression of who we were as americans. We made promises to our afghan partners that we were with them shoulder to shoulder. We believed in it. We risked ourselves together. I saw my national army colleagues out without nearly any of the armor that we had on our vehicles or our bodies. I remember conversations after a very bad night and saying, how did you guys do this . How did you go out there and do the mission . And being taken aback at how brave and patriotic they were. And to know. Security forces sacrificed year after year. This june alone, more than 700 afghan Military And Security forces died in defense of their country. To that point, that kind of leads us back to one of our audience questions. This is a question from leasa and ashley who wrote, i want to know why weve been lied to for decades by multiple administrations and multiple military leaders about the readiness of the Afghan Army we trained. Short of staying forever, how is today going to be any different . What about that . Thats a big question that has been brought up. The readiness of the Afghan Army or the willingness of some in the afghan defense forces to even resist the taliban, rather than surrender at the risk of their own lives. How do you see it . All day ive seen these comments aimed at the u. S. Leadership from day one. Arguing that the american people have been lied to. Every time a general said they thought prog was being made, that somehow that general was lying. I dont believe it. And i say with it some seriousness. I spent more than a decade. Many times in my role as a ponlt reporter, you cover the leadership. The four stars, the three stars, the chairman who go in and out. I believe a lot of them who cycle in, theyre handed the problem and it is their job to assess it and many of them did. And many of them did. That may have been wrong and misguided and maybe it was underfunded, whatever you want to say about it. A lot of them thought what they thought and what they left with were different. I dont know a single person who ever thought it was great, that the mission was accomplished. I heard just the opposite. I heard mostly from general whos said washington was not giving them enough. They would ask for some number of troops and get half that number. And more money for State Department, for nonmilitary ways and that was never funded to the level required. It was something less. Something more politically palatable. Im not saying that more or less should have been done. Im just saying, i think it is disingeneral with us to say these generals have been lying to us all complaining the afghans should have done better. And the ground troops knew better. We all knew that the success of the finallies was entirely dependent on them having their back and their capabilities were only going to be as good as the faith of their government that they were asked to defend. Just like when isis stormed through. No faith In Kabul. And that was especially overtly no reason to have any faith in the united states or the rest of the community once biden pulled a plug. Briefly before we have to pass. Matt, can i get your assessment in terms of what happens next is we trained up this military. The mission was to build up. It was to retake country in total. What does this mean going forward . Have we been put in Grave Danger now . Whether were less safe because of the way the mission has turned out. Before we pause, where does this leave us in terms of Fighting Terrorism . I can tell you immediately, the president of the united states, and i hope hes watching, somebody who works, you need to have the u. S. Military seize the entire airport of kabul. You need to create some time of safe corridor that we can evacuate the people we currently have you can . Kabul to the airport. Meaning you have to get them or you have to make a deal with the ban to let them move safely. The taliban have erected Check Points and they are using the Biometrics Database that we left behind to hundred down anyone who worked for us and kill them on sight. So we have to keep that fundamental promise that my sister kristen was talking about. Right . We have to keep the promise to the people who stood shoulder to shoulder with us. People like kristen and i who looked they will in the eye and said we will be there for them in their moment of need. You open with president bushs remarks. I hope they hold true. I know theres an army of americans who are talking on try to privately get them out. I dont know what happens after we get them out of there. We have left behind a far more dangerous place. Well continue with this. Do stick around. President biden is monitoring the situation in afghanistan tonight. But with kabul under siege, some in congress are laying blame. Well get tom and more of your questions just ahead. Stick around. Estions just ahead stick around so you only pay for what you need. Sorry . Limu, youre an animal only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Today the White House briefed lawmakers on Capitol Hill about the talibans rapid advances. The House Intelligence Committee is planning another briefing soon. With washington in crisis mode, many are looking for someone to blame. I think absolutely President Biden Bears Responsibility but there is no question that President Trump, his administration, secretary pompeo, they also bear very significant responsibility for this. President trump said the taliban would fight terror. Secretary pompeo said the taliban would reannounce Al Qaeda. None of that has happened. They were destroying classified documents as i speak. The Visa Process has stopped. And now, President Biden in july, this wont be a saigon. Guess what, when i talked to ambassador crocker, we think it will be worse. Joining us now, juanita tolliver, democratic strategist, and Matt Gorm an, former Communications Director for the national republican committee. Good to see you both. I wonder, matt if i could start with you and your sense of who is to blame for this. Some of it has been laid at President Trumps feet with his negotiations with the taliban. Some of it is laid at President Bidens decision to stick to this time lime rather than pulling out in the winter when we know the taliban do not fight because it is too severe in the winter to do so. Who do you think we should be pointing the finger at . Yeah. Ill say this. It seemed like it doesnt really matter to have blame. We need to get them out. With Donald Trump and Joe Biden had essentially the same position. Get the heck out of afghanistan as soon as we can. Why do they disagree that . It is defensible. And what is not defensible is how were doing it right now. Were jeopardizing the lives of american personnel, Embassy Personnel, to say nothing of what they were talking about about the afghan whos helped us along the way and the way the biden administration has worded with it strongly worded statements with the State Department or the White House saying, well, the taliban should really consider what the international community lets of them. Like the taliban cares. What is happening now under the biden administration is an absolute disgraceful. What do you think of the fact among other things, President Biden has not made a public Appearance Today . Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was on a number of Morning Programs including on Meet The Press on nbc trying to defend the administrations actions but he is not the commander in chief. Where is President Biden . I feel like hes saying, let me get as much information as possible to pivot as necessary. What we have seen are a few pivots. Hes gotten more information from the joint chiefs, the secretary of defense. Hes added troops twice over the weekend the get the americans safely out of afghanistan as well as the Tens Of Thousands of finally commits did help. I feel like hes hunkering down. Playing close attention. And Second Blinken is out doing his rounds on the sunday shows. I do agree with the note that the definition, or the reason for the chaos has not been adequately addressed by the administration. I do appreciate the forecasts on togethering americans out. What were seeing with Helicopter Air lifts to the airport, the president of afghanistan leaving the country. Theres. So more that needs to be explained as to why the Embassy Staff did not go down to a skeletal staff weeks ago and so much that could have been proactively prevented including the Visa Process for the afghans trying to seek refuge in the united states. Secretary blinken was on Meet The Press this morning. Heres part of how he explained the Administrations Perspective on the outcome. Mission. We went into afghanistan 20 years ago for one mission. That was to deal with the folks who attacked us on 9 11, to bring them to justice and to make sure to the best of our ability that they wouldnt be able to do that again from afghanistan. We achieved those fundamental objectives. The idea that we would sign up for remaining there in the midst of a Civil War for another five, ten, 20 years is not in the national interest. So what about that . The way that he elaborated the mission to deal with the forecasts on 9 11, to the make sure to the best of our ability that they would not be able to do that. If that was the mission in its totality, how did we do . Well, later. In interview, Secretary Blinken said, well, we had our hands tied because President Trump committed to us a timetable that we had already extended. The biden administration is trying to have it both ways. They were saying, well, mission accomplished. And later they said, well, we couldnt do anything about it. President trump committed to us a dead line that he had already extended. And i think Chuck Todd also played for Secretary Blinken, i think criticism very justified from president obamas own ambassador who said, we handed the country over to the taliban. And i was very surprised how strongly he said it. He questioned President Biden, the commander in chief. What about the lingering behind . This was earlier today. This is a crisis of untold proportions. This is an intelligence failure. We underestimated the taliban and overestimated the resolve of the Afghan Army. And the Richard Shes referring to is Richard Engel who will have a report in the next hour who said, yeah, totally saw this coming. No doubt that this is how it would go down. Was this an unforced error . Was this Snatching Defeat from the jaws of victory . If we knew this was likely to happen, how did we let it happen . Joshua, im convince that had no matter when the u. S. Left afghanistan, this type of scenario would have played out. Because after 20 years, after a trillion dollars, countless resources, after sacrifices from our troops, this is what were left with. Im convinced this would have precipitated no matter when we left the country. What i want to come back to, youre right. The lingering impact in this country. The lack of safety for women and girls in particular is absolutely something that will be an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country that needs to be addressed as the first priority of removing any americans on the ground in afghanistan, along with any afghans who helped u. S. Forces. The last few seconds. What about the way we are pulling out of afghanistan . Its possible this was the best possible outcome. That this was the least bad outcome. And because of the situation we were in, there was no good outcome. No winning in afghanistan. Just the least bad of all the outcomes. What about that . I think it is a fair point. I think what you will see is afghanistan will become a Safe Haven for terrorists like it was pre9 11. But also the chinese will be emboldened when they deal with taiwan and the russians with ukraine. We appreciate you both making time for us tonight. Thank you. Coming up, some have compared this taliban siege to the Fall Of Saigon or the battle of dunkirk. Are those comparisons fair . Todays developments in afghanistan are drawing comparisons to historical events. Specially from the vietnam war. In 1975, People Saw Chaos on their televisions. Americans being air lifted from the roof of the u. S. Embassy in saigon. The moment became a symbol of defeat. Well, today we saw helicopters flying over kabul. Americans were being evacuated from a u. S. Embassy. Our panel is back with us. Kevin, what do you make of the comparison to the withdrawal from saigon . Is that a fair comparison . I hate it. I posted that one of the comments was in vietnam, over 50,000 americans were killed. Back home in the united states there were years of antiwar protests. A whole other set of circumstances that led to that image. The shot over the embassy over saigon that day compared to a shot that happened to capture a Helicopter Flying over kabul today. Theyre simply not the same thing. Yes, theyre both bad. Yes, there are afghans and americans rushing to the airports to get out. But im not sure why were making these comparisons other than people have been saying for years and years, any time its not going great, it must be another vietnam. So i understand why it comes up but it is incredibly frustrating. Its not the same thing. A few more questions we would like the get to. You think underneath it is this implication that we randal away with our tail between our legs. We screwed up. We should have seen them coming. Because we messed up this whole thing we had to leave like the house is on fire. That were just blundering our way out of afghanistan in a situation that was untenable and unwinnable. Do you think thats a fair historical comparison . No. Because the u. S. Evacuated more than 120,000 vietnamese After The Fall of south vietnam. The afghans that we are evacuating right now are a tiny sliver of that. Were hearing from afghans on the ground who have been trapped forbureaucracy. A 15step Process for an interpreter visa. Even the last few days, they were getting appointments at the u. S. Embassy In Kabul for september even as they were evacuating. It is inexplicable how long the process has taken. The new P2 Visa has been opened up and i cant make sense of it. It is so opaque. There is no Time Line to it. It is such a wait and see process. Afghans dont have visas to get out. They dont have passports for their families to take everybody out. There is such restriction right now on getting any afghans out. We are hearing from folks on the ground who are hunkered down. They worked with the u. S. They know they are going to be hunted down by taliban very soon. Some of them are sending us goodbye notes because they believe they are going to die imminently. We are abandoning Tens Of Thousands, if not more than that. And there is a lot of talk about evacuating our afghan allies but we are not seeing it happening. Were not seeing it happening. With regard to evacuations, we got a statement just now from the government of france from its Minute Sister for Foreign Affairs who says, the french authorities have also decided to relocate their embassy to kabuls airport. According to the statement, more than 600 people are under the custody of the ministry of interior. They are also at the order of french President Emmanuel Mac ron sending reinforcements to the United Arab Emirates. West of that is iran, then Persian Gulf and a Bit South are dubai and the United Arab Emirates. France is also closing its embassy In Kabul. More than 600 people to be evacuated with French Armed Forces on their way to United Arab Emirates to facilitate that evacuation. Go ahead. It is worth mentioning within the last couple hours, the State Department and the Defense Department have put out a joint statement explaining what they intend to happen in the next couple days. With the Grand Total of 6,000 u. S. Troops going into the country and an unknown number of air, the intent, the Security Airport to take over Aircraft And Control and to secure all routes to the airport. And Secretary Blinken has put out a Tweet Or Statement saying, in an opaque way, those routes to the airport for afghan whos want to leave should be be remained open and the community should keep them open west dont know how quickly they can get people out. Our reporters are literally counting bodies in the pictures of people walking up in a c17. He sow the next three days, into the next week will be very critical. Briefly, matt, before we go. It cant be, im sorry. We need to pend conversation right now. No one can advocate for three days to a week. We are the united states of america. No, i meant no. We will leave when this mission is complete. Let us be fundamentally clear. The Islamic Emirates of afghanistan are not our friends. We shouldnt Honor Agreements with them. They just overthrew the democratically elected government and theyre now installing will install sharia. We talked about vietnam. But there is something that we need to be abundantly clear. We were lucky and had an ocean of boats to work with. We dont have that now. We have to fly people out. We have to stay as long as we can and its simple.
