Good evening to both of you. Masha let me start with you, because youve talked about surviving autocracy, youre trying to give people tips of how this is all going to go down and many of us who have not thought it was it all starts with a lie, and the lie can be pretty stupid and pretty provably wrong and yet, if enough people say it enough times and enough circles it persists and soon millions of people are believing this. And thats where we are today. I think, actually, we are in a bigger kind of trouble. Which is that we have a party that has decided that its goal, its basic platform is that the current administration is illegitimate. Everything it does is it legitimate. Everything it says is illegitimate. And the only party in the only politicians who legitimately represent the role of the american people, is the Republican Party, the trump Republican Party. And everything stems from that premise. And so thats the answer to your question, why trump doesnt sign on to advocate for the vaccine that was actually developed under his administration. Because that would place him somewhere in the area of Lending Legitimacy to the biden administration. Not the trump has ever done the right thing, but this is the basic explanation, right . And this is why we dont see republicans willing to investigate the January 6th insurrection, in which many of them were physically, personally threatened. Because that would lend legitimacy to the current administration. And thats the battle we are in now. How does this battle go, David Jolly . Because there are more a view than i imagine that there are. People that grew up with conservative principles and probably would have enjoyed debates with liberals on some basic policy issues. But you dont have that freedom anymore. Americans dont have freedom. Americans who dont believe in Conspiracy Theories dont have freedom to vote for republicans anymore. And americans who are not Conspiracy Theories dont have room to enjoy being in their own party. Thats exactly right, ali velshi, and im in the vast minority. The past four years has proven that out. I hoped we would be able to retake The Party, coalesce a group of reasonable, Center Right Policy focused voters. But the numbers simply arent there. Where the numbers are in todays Republican Party as a competitive force within the democrats. They will either further consolidate or fracture because of these elements that you highlighted. And i would say theres kind of two primary elements in todays Republican Party. In todays republican coalition. There is just the abject corrupt politicians, and its more than just Donald Trump. You mentioned Bill Barr, some of the members of congress that aided Donald Trump in trying to kneecap the election, kneecap our republic. That is the corruption constituency, if you will. But then there is the other part. And this is probably the majority of todays republican leaders, if not The Party, today. That simply face the reality that this is the constituency they created. Right . All of the gerrymandering, the rigging, Everything Theyve done with Big Money to secure what would otherwise be a minority party, to secure the ability to control the majority of government, that is the Constituency Theyve created. And they cant lose it, so they will have to continue to pedal in this lane, of corruption, of authoritarianism, until it either further consolidates or until It Fractures The Party once and for all. But a fraction of The Party will mean that Donald Trump has been overtaken in leadership by somebody else out there, one of the governors or congressional leaders. Whoever maybe that comes behind trump. I want to read to you something that Masha Gessen when they fantasize about killing you, believe them. Wow m. Wo i ask you that in the context of the fact that the Pillow Guy actually says that Tomorrow Morning Biden and harris are going to resign and Donald Trump is going to be sworn in as president. Its stupid that the three of us On Tv and probably most of the people listening to us. But there are some people out there who believe that. There are people who believe that this conference in south dakota, that the Pillow Guy had, it he presented no evidence, its just the idea that the live persists. You know, we are about seven months too late to this particular conversation. But we actually saw exactly how it works on January 6th. We saw a bunch of people who nobody took seriously, who went to the capital. And in the other conviction that they had, that they were taking back the election, taking back legitimate power. They were going to be able to succeed somehow, they thought. They have this script that they thought they were following. The script can change one after another. Theres nothing consistent in a totalitarian movement. And this, make no mistake, is what trump has been building. A totalitarian type movement. Theres nothing consistent in its rhetoric except the basic premise. And the promises that they are the only legitimate representative. So david, what does happened then, because it some point there must be some people, republican members of congress or aspiring members, who would like to run because they would like to formulate Government Policy that they think would be better for the american people. But that debate has fallen apart. Its actually kind of amazing, this past week where we have seen republicans get on board with the bipartisan infrastructure deal, you know that that should be the biggest nobrainer. One step more complicated than naming a post office. It should be bipartisan, its necessary, americans want it. But we havent shown the propensity to do more than that, because of the preoccupation with being this party that sustains itself in power. Yes, policy is not the platform of republicans today. Its grievance politics. Its Conspiracy Theories. Its negative partisanship and the classical term of how you run campaigns, its the only currency republicans currently have. Its why you see these absurd claims now about joe biden, that they tried against barack obama. But, no ali velshi, i truly worry tonight, about the previous comments, that we will see further violence as a result of the Conspiracy Theories, and a failure to condone these Conspiracy Theories. We saw what happened on January 6th but lets look at School Board meetings, where parents under the veil of defending their own freedom, that republicans put out there, that somehow it is okay for them to assault nurses and doctors in this process. The further these conspiracies get out of control, and the inability of republicans to stop them becomes clear, or worse, their ability to foster these conspiracies, i fear there is more violence coming. And the greater fear, then, is our we truly broken . Are we a nation that has been broken along political lines as a result of January 6th and the pandemic . This is a Sucker Punch nationally, to us, to our culture. And we havent demonstrated the ability to mend our wounds and come together. And i dont know what will bring us together because the level of distrust now is so deep in the Body Politic in the united states. Im still going to hold out hope that we may somehow, some way prevail as a pluralistic society, where we dont all have to be the same and we can really have amazing debates about things. Issuin civitoday a spokesperson told tt the Sergeant At Arms deputized members of Texas Law Enforcement in rounding up texas democrats and bring them to this chamber. More than 40 democrats of trying to fight those Arrest Warrants in court and how the naacp is calling on the Justice Department to find out whether these warrants violate the rights of these democrats. In some cases they have left the state in order to stop something that they say isnt constitutional, because it will take away the ability to vote for people. As if you decide im not going to work today, i dont feel good, and therefore im not coming, an msnbc sent Law Enforcement to your house saying, no, you are going to come to the studio, were going to hold you captive until you interview a guest. Its outrageous, thats why were asking the department of justice to look into whether or not this is legal. I commend the members of the Texas House of representatives. I come those senators in those the State Senate who stood there for 15 hours. I know Senator Roy West was organizing for the senators leave, they felt too short of denying of quorum on the senate. We must continue to fight and fight because the rights of individuals are at stake and, quite frankly, the quality of our constitution has been challenged by individuals who want to see January 6th play out over and over, the denial of the peaceful transfer of power. And the inability of individuals to be deemed to legitimate citizens by being able to cast a vote. By being lets divide how this is breaking down. Texas is the epicenter, right . Its a place we are focused on. We know that there is nonsense in Arizona And Michigan and pennsylvania. And georgia. But texas is where the energy is focused on, the resistance to one of the state laws, the laws that would reduce voting rights. Then we have the united States Senate that is now talking about two different bills. One of Which Manchin is on board for, one of which Reverend Warnock is working to get going. Youve got the summer of action in which you are seeing a number of people get arrested, reminiscent of the sixties, Faith Leaders and protesters. And youve got the president. The texans have said we need the senate, and we need the president to do something. We cannot hold out forever. One day they will arrest us, One Day will have to go home. What have you heard from the president and from Joe Manchin and others that gives you some sense that this may and the right way . Ive been concerned that we have not put the same level of priority around protecting the rights of citizens to fully engage with our election. This is not about partisanship, this is about supporting in upholding the constitution. I am concerned that as we celebrate the huge Infrastructure Package that we should come in the administration for that. But we should also recognize particularly in the African American community, that the new deal policies, as great a piece of legislation as it was, it created African American structural barriers. So as we celebrate on one side, unless and until this administration, the senate, prioritizes access to voting and protecting our right to vote, we will fall behind as a nation. We will fall behind as a community. So i dont get into the conversation of which vehicle we should use or what procedure we should move. Get it done. We have over 1000 active covid19 cases in those who are less than 17 years of age. The situation is daring for our children. Deadly for our children. Intensive care units, it was reported for two kids in our county last week to kids in your county died of this. So Representative Lamar, those kids dont have a choice in this matter . So when i think about our legislators literally putting kids at risk of dying, that makes me think of the pain that i know another parent experienced that i have personally experienced. So i take it extra personal that we have already seen kids in my community dying of the disease, and we are trying to call a Special Session that is going to put other kids at risk of dying. And we need a political system that represents america as it is right now. The beginning of the census data is the beginning of the redistricting which is the beginning of the gerrymandering season. The very states that have been rushing to suppress the vote will now be rushing to gerrymander. It will have a significant impact, as you say, on congressional legislative representation. Not just now, but into the future. A whole decade these things last and it is why it is so urgent for congress to act now while it can to bend gerrymandering and set national standards on redistricting. And right now we dont have that, maria teresa, we dont have a ban on that. So people can go in there and, despite all the shenanigans you see in georgia, in arizona, in texas, this is much simpler. Redistricting, gerrymandering, is a much simpler way of winning or districts. Absolutely. Right if we were to go back to what happened as a result of the 2010 census, just in texas alone, the growth of the Latino Population and the growth of the African American population that had been displaced by katrina, they technically shouldve gotten three latino districts and one africanamerican district. But because it was the gop controlled the state legislature, and the Redistricting Redistricting Process in texas, the Latino Population garner to, the white population garner, two and the African American population was left out. That is not a democracy. But we need to assure, and that is one of the reasons why the for the people act is so important, is we need to assure that every single state is played by the exact same rules to enfranchise every single american, regardless of race, regardless of zip code. Short of, that youre gonna have a continuous shenanigans that were seeing in shenzhen georgia, in texas. Again, if you look at what happened in texas and in georgia, both of them are the hardest of a tech states. Both of them had certified, fair elections. Yet theyre trying to create more Voter Suppression because they recognize that just in texas alone, theres a quarter of 1 Million young latinos that are gonna turn 18 in terms of the Midterm Election next. Year its we vote people in change in our democracy. We did it in time for the White House to change, the senate to, change in congress to change. And that is why the Republican Party is trying to do. Theyre trying to hold back the future and disenfranchised the multi cultural america which sees a very different future for us to abide by. And the looting that means we believe in climate, change in womans right to two and unless republicans modernize, the only thing that they have left for them is to continue stacking the deck against americans. So michael, whats the race right now . How fast can people redistract and how fast can partisan gerrymandering can be done away with . Well the gerrymanders have been waiting for this moment. And in a place like texas, they are going to get started now and some have said that theyre going to try to get their maps done within a few weeks. The races in the states, like texas, like georgia, and others, where there is an opportunity to gerrymander. And on the other hand, congress needs to do its job and actually deal with this issue as maria said. It is almost too late. And gets more and more complicated to have an impact from these national laws the longer it goes on. Now is the time, there is no more waiting around.
