Sustaining it, seek to go weaponize the department of justice. What this exodus could mean. Later well talk to a Healthware Hero immortalized in plastic barbie. Amy osullivan, who is now a barbie doll, a covid legend. There is a new study by New York Times and Stanford University about the massive exodus of children. The drop was 28 higher for families earning 35,000 or less. The studies show the months but the able to recover may follow a racial and economic divide. It also suggests the educational loss to our kids may be one of the biggest costs to this pandemic. Im joined by kayla patrick, an analyst with the Education Trust to help us understand this. Who knows what this will do really for their future. Lets look at the map. It shows ten states lost a full 15 of Kinder Gartners In Public schools. The concentrations are higher, of course, in inner cities what is your latest reaction . I think this is an important study. It highlights what weve been hearing from families all along. Some of their fears have to do with the pandemic. Covid has absolutely hit black and brown communities, communities of low income backgrounds really, really hard. So they are really concerned about their kids being socially and emotional safe in schools, and there havent can be quite some Black And Latino Students are less likely to have access to high Quality Education in every way that matters. So this map really shows that black and latino parents are concerned about sending their kids back to school. I want to talk about the inequality with the disparity that already existed. This is even more troubling, right . 43 of students did not have access to College Readiness courses. 1. 6 million students attending school with a sworn Law Enforcement Officer present, but no school counselor. You think about the disparity that already existed and what this could do now, missing out on kindergarten education. Let me read something else for many students, its their introduce at school. They learn early phonics, the concept of bigger and smaller quantities. In kindergarten, thats the first place where children are diagnosed with disabilities like autism spectrum disorder. Black and latino students, students from lowincome backgrounds are less likely to have affordable prek. So for many kindergarten is their first time where they can learn these skills. Im optimistic. The federal government is sending 125 Billion to schools across the country. They can use some of these funds to start to solve the inequities. So the only one of the only requirements of this money is they use at least 20 to help kids back on Grate Level. This is really important, in districts like miami, where over half the students are below Grate Level in math, right . Were hoping that districts like miami will use strategies like targeted and tutoring to get the students back on grade level, but to solve some of the Opportunity Gaps we have seen before, making sure the students have action to advances the coursework, access to experienced and racially diverse teachers, and making sure they have access to Highquality Prek programs. Can we reverse it . Im optimistic we can. Its not just about about how much money were getting, but how well were spending it. So a district like detroit is getting 3,000 per student just to help them get back on grade level. We no that targeted tutoring can cost as little as 900 per student. Welcome to see districts implement tutoring programs. Theyre working with a small group of students to really help them fill their gaps. They may have the over the last year or two theyve been at home virtually learning. Im going to take your optimism and run with it. Im really hoping youre right. Kayla patrick, great to see you. Great to see you. We want to bring in democratic Congress Madge Jamal Bouman of new york city. Thank you for joining us. You were listening, hearing about this Mass Exodus of kindergarteners. Can we reverse the damage that has already been done . We absolutely can. Im glad kayla mentioned the american Rescue Plan Money thats been sent to states. That is a start to help get kids back on track. Its not just about getting them back on track academically, its about getting back on track socially, emotionally and recognizing the past year has been a tremendous trauma for our kids. You put up the number of cops in our schools versus counselors, those numbers need to be reversed. Low are class size, targeted instruction, in small groups, eye specially for English Language learners and children with special needs. The moan that we sent with the american Rescue Plan is not enough. Thats the deal for Public Schools. We need to invest about 46 Billion over ten years to retrofit our crumbling school infrastructure. Students should not be in school with mold and mildew, lead, and lack of hot water in our bathrooms. Theres a lot of physical work to do in terms of the buildings, initial to the cognitive and social and emotional work. So lets expand on the green new deal for skills that you just mentioned, that you are an advocate for and proposes. Ten years to combat climate change. How could this improve the School Systems . Do you see this being tied to the Reconciliation Bill . We are hoping that a large chunk of it is tied to the Reconciliation Bill, for schools retrofits. But were targeting, first and foremost, schools their in title i communities and historically redline communities. The same schools where a large number of kindergarteners have not returned due to covid. Those are the areas we theyd to invest in. Those are the areas that have been most neglected. Solar, wind in, retrofitting schools, new hvac systems, and were talking about hundreds of jobs in each community, thousands of jobs across the country to rebuild both the Learning Environments of the kids, but also the economy overall finally we need to focus on science and the arts as our kids come back to school. This is where the social and emotional learning lives, where the create activity lives, and helps to reintroduces the Learning Environment to our kids, because theyve been gone for so long. If you were still a principal of your school, what would be telling your kids on the return to school now . Especially when kids are so anxious, and parents, too, on a safe return to school. First thing i would say is i love you, ive missed you, Welcome Back and give every single Child And Parent a big hug. That would be the first thing i would do, and this is important. Its going to be a challenge to socially distance in classrooms with 30 to 40 kids. In places like new york, you have a lot of kids in our classroom. We have to use Alternative Learning Spaces what im trying to do is encourage Outdoor Learning Spaces and Alternative Learning Spaces to our kids. You create pods and cohorts so you can socially distance and accelerate learning, when is why we need additional Teach Respect in the classroom. But it begins with love and communicating how much kids and families have been missed. That helps bridge the gap to reentry in our schools. I love that. Two things. I hope youre giving that hug with a mask on. Yes. Secondly, my oldest is starting kindergarten at a new york Public School in brooklyn. I would love a message like that from a principal. Thank you, congressman boumann. Thank you. We are following issues on capitol hill. Representative Gwen Moore of the House Ways And Means Committee is here to talk about all of it, when we come back. Talk about a, when we come back. Ruggle to gete transportation to their medical appointments. Thats why i started medhaul. [ Buglers Dream playing ] Welcome Back, everybody. The senate is in session for the second consecutive day. Lawmakers are inching toward the Finish Line on a bipartisan Infrastructure Deal. A vote is scheduled for later this evening on an amendment that would put in place the Infrastructure Bill, prior to final package. Despite broad support, one Gop Senator says hes not in favor of the deal, but only because house democrats want to vote on it in tandem. Pelosi has sent all along she wont let the bill go through The House until they did get that reckless spending bill. If you help this get done, youre helping to get the 5. 5 Trillion done. Im pretty sure its 3. 5 Trillion, but nonetheless, its a heck of a lot of money. Congresswoman, thanks for joining us. I really appreciate it. It seems like for democrats its good news at the capitol right now. It seems as if the Infrastructure Bill will pass the senate. How do you see this playing out in The House, considering republican opposition to passing the Infrastructure Deal in tandem with the Reconciliation Bill . Well, thanks for having me. You know, i think that the bill is proceeding as Nancy Pelosi indicated months ago, that we would look at a bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. It really has many components that both democrats and republicans want, moderates and progressives support, and thats been done. We are moving forward that Finish Line. It will also support the republicans. The 3. 5 Trillion that has been scaled way back, to really put that Human Infrastructure in place. Think about it, yasmin. The story of unemployment during this pandemic was a story of women not having jobs, because they didnt have Child Care and so on. So we need family medical leave, Child Care, extending a child tax credit, these are worthy of discussion, not only because democrats want it, but because there are things to help buoy our economy. It seems like theres democrats, folks in your party who dont necessarily agree with you, to pass this thing in tandem with the Reconciliation Bill. For reasons unknown to us, possibly because they feel the infrastructure will fall flat, its got a major price tag. I want to read for you from a letter from modern democrats, to Speaker Pelosi about this, saying, as soon as the senate completes its work, we must bring the bipartisan Infrastructure Bill to the House Floor for a standalone bill. It deserves its own consideration without with regard to other legislation, separately, as we begin the reconciliation process, we have concerns about the potential package. So are you concerned about the split even withen your own party passing both of these bills together . Well, you know, its a blessing to be in the majority and its a curse to be in the majority. Weve got less than a tenperson majority. So that means a handful of democrats, moderates, progressives, just people who dont want to work together can destroy the bill. Thats where the skill of Nancy Pelosi comes in. She has great credibility with these moderates, you know, members of the problem solvers caucus. She has a great deal of sway and is much beloved by many people, the Progressive Caucus as well. We do know what it takes to legislate. Its a compromise. That 3. 5 Trillion bill is scaled way back from the 6 Trillion we thought was really the Bottom Line in The House. So i think that its going to continue to be a legislative process. I dont Think Pelosi will call us back from August Recess to consider this one bill. I do think shes going to at least the other day she was sticking to her resolve to have the senate go first and show some good faith and putting forth the other part of Joe Bidens build back better agenda. I want to get your reaction to the former acting Ag Rosen testifying in front of the committee . Ill tell you, he ran to offer himself up for testimony before the trump lawyers could get together to find some Excuse Or Reason to block people from testifying. I think that his willingness to do it really sheds light on what we have known for so long, that this was a very corrupt regime, that January 6th was just the End Point of a long effort to undermine our democracy and election. Im so happy that the January 6th select committee is looking at this, and this is yet another powerful testimony that there finally lead us to those people who funded, financed and were the Brain Trusts of this January 6th insurrection. Congresswoman, thank you. I appreciate it. Thanks. I want to bring in my panel in, noelle and anita. Lets start with ag Jeffrey Rosen testifying. Noelle, the congresswoman is right in saying essentially he ran to testify before president could exert executive privilege. To make issue he didnt do that. I asked barbara mcquaid, could the president exert privilege . She said, yes, which means he wouldnt have to. Talk to me about what this says when it comes to the investigation. Well, i mean, i think that its a point against trump. I think its not looking good, especially, you know, when you had the interview with the congresswoman and she was saying he was running to testify, you know, that he didnt wait around, that he was almost, you know, really to get his story out. I was reading some of the excerpts from that, and they were saying that both men were saying that they were not specifically asked to do anything nefarious, but that it was certainly alluded to, and they were certainly, you know, led that way. That doesnt look good. Thats not something that i feel like anyone from the trump administration, you know, would be very happy about. If i were part of that group, i would be very, very worried, and rightfully so. I think now its starting to get legs, and now theyre starting to form something of validity here. Let me read for you from the New York Times about rosens testimony and what it is he offered. Mr. Rosen described subsequent exchanges with mr. Clark, who continued to press colleagues to make statements about the election that they found to be untrue, according to a person familiar with the interview. He also discovered that mr. Clark his engaging in unauthorized conversations with mr. Trump about ways to have the Justice Department publicly passed out on president bidens victory, particularly on Battleground States that President Trump was fixated on, like georgia. What impact could this have on those involved, considering rosens testimony . Huge implications. This shows not only was rosen saying no to undermining our democracy, but also showed he had to reel in deputies, who were clearly meeting with trump and doing trumps bidding, and ready and willing to do that bidding. It shows that rosen had to fight multiple fires, and hes naming names, which is important, because those specifics show that not only should trump be held accountable, but anybody who was working in the doj should be held accountable as well. The ability to name names, and as representative moore said, running to congress to get on the record . Look, rosen knew he had all the when he was writing notes. Rosen knew how how wrong this was. He was ready to stand up for our democracy, and the integrity of the department of justice. Hes saying this through. Essentially, he was trying to subvert elections and set up a coup of his own from the White House by proxy of the doj since the 2020 election started. Now is the time for accountability, making sure anybody who was on staff at doj ready and willing to help him, also held accountability. This could be referred to federal prosecutors, but well have to way to see what the office of the Inspector General recommends. I want to move on to infrastructure while you have you ladies. When it look as if the Infrastructure Bill is going to get across the Finish Line in the senate, right . Then comes the Reconciliation Bill. Folks arent so sure that will have as easy a time. What do you expect there . Well, i dont think it will have an easy time, as you said. I think theres a lot of resistance, you know. Not with the moderates, but there are a lot of strongholds that do not want to see this, because, like in an interpret you had from senator rick scott, they field like this is going to lead everybody down a path that republicans are extremely against, and theyre going to be a strong hold. Juanita, talk to me about the split inside the democratic party the congresswoman felt as if the speaker would have the ability to deal with the split inside the party, but give me your kind of sense, when it comes to moderate democrats saying, listen, lets vote on this on its own, and then deal with reconciliation . Look, yasmin, im looking at the how moderates like why oh why would you put in payable a big portion of the democratic agenda at this point . Were seeing it play out in social media. Progressives are shooting back, why are you willing to sink a big part of bidens agenda. So i want to cling to the hope that representative moore communicated, but get it across the Finish Line was such a Thing Margin in The House will be a big undertaking. I think it whether we have the moderates in The House democratic caucus saying we put it out there to show were pushing back, or theyre going to continue to beat that drum, which could put a big part at risk. Were going to continue to monitor those two big stories, the Infrastructure Bill and then the rosen testimony, and bring you any updates as we continue along of the. Also ahead, the group trying to use a public spectacle to force Governor Cuomo from office. And a brooklyn nurse, who now sports her own barbie doll. Well immediate Amy Osullivan, later this hour. And many of us realize a fundamental human need to connect with other likeminded people. Welcome back to the world. Viking. Exploring the world in comfort. Once again. Welcome back, everybody. We have now heard from the woman who filed the criminal complaint against Governor Cuomo. She told cbs that the governor needs to be held accountable, and she felt she had no choice. Just to assignment clear again, being held accountable to you is seeing the governor charged with crime. What he did to me was a crime. He broke the law. Governor cuomo denies any wrongcog. Meantime calls for the governor to resign increase. That banner was committed by ultraviolet, a national womens group. Were joined by the Communication Director bridget todd. Give me your motivations for flying that banner. We wanted to show up with the Plane Banners for the women who shared their stories at enormous risk to their wellbeing. And for the millions of people who deserve better than to have a sexual predator leading their state. I want to read from New York Times how the governor took advantage of the me too movement. Its this mr. Cuomo not only made it easier for New Yorkers to bring forward claims, but approved legislation, length in this the statutes as he boasted of the accomplishments at new conferences and public events, he surrounded himself with powerhouse feminists. What does it say to you . Well, i think its a shame when powerful men align publicly as champion of women, only to really abuse that trust. We see powerful Doing It as a way of manipulating others. They have this great public report so they could say i would never do this. I am a champion of women. I think its purely a manipulation tactic, and another way that abuser avoid accountability. There was a moment during the Press Conference with Attorney General james that was cheered on by a lot of womens groups. I want to play that moment for you. Governor cuomo sexually harassed multiple women, many of whom were young women, by engaging in unwanted groping, kisses, hugging, and by making inappropriate comments. I believe women, and i believe these 11 women. This woman really stood out to me, and i think it stood out to a lot of women. Any victim of sexual assault, they at times dont necessarily feel heard, right . Feel believed. What does it say when the Attorney General of the state of new york stands up in front of everybody and said that, i believe these women, i believe these 11 women. That moment was so moving. I think it demonstrates we have come a long way, Made Real Strides in terms of understanding sexual harassment, Sexual Abuse in the culture. I dont think too long with a different Attorney General, i dont think we would have seen such a clear message to all the different survivors of this kind of abuse that they are heard, they are believed and they are supported. We really applaud Attorney General james for this amazing investigation that was so credible and thoughtfully done. That moment for survivors everywhere, its so important we field heard, supported and believed. There was a part of the report as well where the Attorney General points out that the governor reached out to womens groups for support and tried to, in fact, Dig Up Dirt on his accusers. I dont know the specifics of what happened in that situation is advocates, theres a Fine Line between giving advice and enabling Abuse Or Power structures. Our organization, were asked to give advice all the time. Its very important we ask questions about how that advice is going to be used. The most important thing to recognize, he actively used a position of power to try to silence voice is and avoid accountability, so i think thats the important thing to remember here. Do you have more plans . Do you have notice things planned . Oh, absolutely. We are not going to. Bridget todd, thank you. Straight ahead, the idea of normal, my thoughts on that in the run. Among the honorees are british vaccine developer, sarah gilbert, Amy Osylvan and Frontline Doctor Audrey cruz. A spokesperson for mattel said while barbie has held many jobs, theyre hoping to highlight amazing Role Model, barbie will donate 5 for every Paramedic Doll to the first responders childrens foundation, as part of their thank you heroes program. Here with me now is one of the reallife Role Model dolls, nurse Amy Osullivan who works in brooklyn, new york. Thank you your doll. Oh, my gosh. Its like an exact oh, my gosh is right. Replica of you. That is so cool. And let me get into the dolls and then we will get into the emotional part after it. Sure. First of all, your doll has tattoos. Collarful socks, like you like to wear, the glasses. It is completely and specifically you. It was this wonderful Design Team at barbie. We worked have close with each other every day. I must have called them 15 times a day to send them photos of my tattoos, of my glasses, of my hair, and i am very, very picky about my socks and my shoes and my scrubs and my bracelets. Every single thing, all the tattoos are hand painted by a beautiful artist. And down to my flamingo little scarf here that i wore during the pandemic which made me feel secure. Thats the only way i can explain it. But, yeah, its crazy. I just feel like i am looking in a mirror when i see that doll. Yeah, you basically are. What does a doll like that say to kids . Well, you know, what i have seen since the doll has been released, The One Of A Kind doll in this program by barbie is not only little kids, but younger adults, the next generations, they are like, amy, you have been an inspiration to me because i encourage them to be different. It is okay to be different, to look different, and it is pretty cool to be different it makes you very special. And how lucky am i to be a barbie . I want to talk about the pandemic and you having to treat so many patients throughout this entire period. You were the first nurse on the ground to treat the first patient of covid in brooklyn. That patient went on to die, sadly. You also contracted covid, and thankfully, survived and recovered. How are you fairing now . You know, now is okay. You know, we are actually on vacation as i am talking to you. Its the first vacation in two years, because weve been working. And, you know, i must say, its kind of catching up with us, the anxiety, and the memories. But we are making the best of it. Were just being positive. I mean, how lucky am i, you know, to be able to talk to you, number one, and to be able to be a Role Model for barbie and Little Girls and young girls and women out there. You know, you can look different, and you can do anything, you can be anything. You have two kids, 14 and 6. What do they think about this doll. Three kids. Guys, shes got three kids, not two. Right in its all good. Now we might even have four. This is number four, because shes on vacation with us, too. Three kids, ocean is 14, cali is 12, and summer is 6. And my wonderful partner, tiffani, is also a nurse in the emergency room wikoff. They love it. The 6yearold tried to steal it already. She says it is a Brain Shock to see mom as a doll. It is wonderful. Anyone who played with Bar Bees as i did, i cant imagine what it means to have a barley shaped after to you, to your likings and to your shapings. And the history surrounding barbie, and the Perfection Model of barbie, to now say it is okay to be differ. It is very cool, especially representing this difficult time in our past, in our history, and in our current state, with this pandemic. Final question here, and that is are your kids looking to get more barbies to play with . Do they want the Wohl Kit and caboodle to the whole Kit And Caboodle to make sure they can play with Moms Doll . Well, this doll has to go into a beautiful Glass Case protected by all of the animals in our house. This is a one of a kind doll. But the most important part of this Barby Barbie Project is to encourage Little Girls that they can do anything, be anything. And also the donation of 5 for every pandemic, every Nurse And Doctor doll that is sold in target stores goes to the first responders association. Thats wonderful. It touches me deeply. Amio sullivan, thank you for all the work you have done throughout this entire pandemic. Congratulations on your very own doll. Thank you, amy. All right.
