The hill he was quote struck by how close the country came to total catastrophe. The senator will join me live this hour to discuss all of that and more. Plus, the senate is back in session today, inching closer and closer to a final vote on that 1 Trillion Infrastructure Deal. We will have more on that in just a moment. First, troubling new numbers from emerging place where is the Coronavirus Pandemic is now getting worse. This is as the u. S. Is now averaging more than 100,000 new cases per day. Just this morning, the former Cdc Director predicting that double could actually double next month. Unfortunately, the Delta Variant is doubly dangerous. And we anticipated that cases could go up to as high as 200,000 a day by early september. Thats why it is So important to double down on our two most effective interventions, vaccination and masking. Lets not waste any time here. Lets go to Ally Vitale is who is on capitol hill. Alley, what more do we know about this testimony . We know it happened over the course of the weekend, and that it wasnt just with Jeffrey Rosen, the former Acting Attorney General, but alSo his deputy, richard donahue. You will remember that name because he is one of the d. O. J. Officials who in the waning weeks of the Trump Administration took handwritten notes on a conversation he had with then president Donald Trump in which trump effectively said just say the investigation was corrupt and then leave the rest to me. These are key people who had interactions with President Trump and his top staff in the key weeks after trump lost the election and before he left the White House. It goes to show because the former president is physically gone from the White House and from washington, his shadow is still looming So large, and lawmakers remain dedicated to figuring what was actually going on behind the scenes there. Its clear in just this trickle of information that we have gotten from just this testimony alone, which was voluntary and lasted several hours over the weekend Behind Closed Doors that there is clearly still more to know. But based on what they heard, this is what Senator Durbin says they know So far. He was being asked by the White House, the leadership in the White House, to meet with certain people who had these Wild Bizarrers that why that election was invalid. And he refused to do it. I have to say history is going to be very kind to mr. Rosen when it is all over. When he was officially appointed i didnt think that was the case. I was wrong. It is striking when you hear senators, like blumen shall using words like close to catastrophe when they describe what they heard from these former officials. It goes to show the lengths the former president could have gone to to try to overturn the president ial election in 2020 which he lost. This is not the only piece of news we are following. You said that the senate is inching towards voting on the bipartisan Infrastructure Deal. I want to put the emphasis on inching. They are definitely taking the slower road here. Yesterday there was hope that all 100 senators could come together and come to an disagreement on moving forward on the debates that need to happen before moving on to vote on this bill. You need all 100. But in this case there is one senator saying they want to go through regular order which means this is going to be drawn out. Tensions from senators on both sides of the aisle who want to see this go through to a vote. There was a lot of work done to get through this bill. After they vote, it looks like that vote could come as early as tuesday on bipartisan piece of this bill. But senators like Sanders Have said immediately after her going to move on to the reconciliation piece, more of the Human Infrastructure that democrats have touted and is super progressive. Inching closer and closer to the deal. Thank you. Joining me now, California Congresswoman Barbara lee, a Democrat Member of the House Appropriations and bumgtsz committees. Congresswoman, first and foremost i want to thank you for your time and your service. Thank you for being with us this hour. What is your reaction to Senator Durbins revelations about the former Attorney Generals testimony on former President Bidens attempts to overturn the 2020 election . Thank you for having me. The truth is going to come out. Each and every day we see more of the facts being laid out. I know that we were very close to unfortunate violent coup on January 6th. But i alSo know that Donald Trump was trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power. We voted on the independent commission in the house only probably 35 republicans voted for it. They couldnt get this independent commission to come to a vote in the senate. We have to question why do republicans continue to try to protect Donald Trump . The facts are coming out. Our select committee chaired by bennie thompSon, they are uncovering many, many, many of the facts that took place. I think it is time i think after this testimony from mr. Rosen, it is time for the republicans to reconsider their support for Donald Trump in terms of just the vulnerability and the damage that he has done and continues to do to our democracy. Congresswoman, i guess my question then is, what comes next . I mean, how useful is this testimony. You say that now is the time. But how do you actually think this information can and will be used moving forward . Well, hopefully, the information in a the public will begin to understand because of the information and the facts that are coming out, they will begin to see who is on their side. They will begin to understand that Donald Trump was leading this country into a dictatorship. They will begin to understand how vulnerable our democracy is and not support those members of congress, those republicans especiallies, who try to deny on January 6th a violent coup almost took place. Hopefully the facts will educate the public. Now we are still seeing republicans in the senate and in the house sticking with Donald Trump trying to deny that he tried to thwart a peaceful transfer of appear. Congresswoman there is a lot to unpack. Stay with us. Later in the hour we have got more on those revelations from trumps Former Acting a. G. In just a moment, Judiciary Committee Member Richard Blumenthal will tell us what he learned from yesterdays rare weekend meeting. Congresswoman, stay with us. We are going to the White House for a quick update and then he would like to come to you after that. This weekend the senate works overtime to push President Bidens trillion Dollar Infrastructure Bill across the finish. Lets go to mike memberly, who is traveling with the president. I am sure President Biden is itching to get this bill passed. It would be a pretty major bipartisan achievement. But there are Some roadblocks. How confident is the administration right now, this weekend, feeling . Morgan, the very confident that this bipartisan Infrastructure Bill remains on track. We saw that bipartisan coalition holding firm yesterday. All of the democrats plus more than a dozen republicans moving forward in that procedural vote yesterday. But thats not to say they are not paying close attention knowing that as Joe Biden, who served in the senate for 36 years knows, any little wrinkle could emerge quickly and threaten to disrupt that progress. Thats why the president has been and Some of his top legislative advisers have been in touch with lawmakers on capitol hill. We even So vice president Kamala Harris herself travel to meet with Senators Yesterday making sure this is on track. The president , we expect would return to washington. Hes supposed to go on Something of a vacation over these next few weeks. But he will travel into washington as it heads into the final vote. This is a significant accomplishment for the president as he wants to not just get this bipartisan Infrastructure Deal passed, but alSo move on to the next piece, which is that larger Reconciliation Measure which represents the Sum Total of his build back better agenda. It is exactly that larger piece of legislation that republicans who are opposing it are keeping their focus on. We heard from Senator Rick Scott of florida today. Listen to his comments. Pelosi has said all along she will not allow this bill to go through the house unless they get their 5. 5 Trillion reckless Tax And Spending bill done at the same time. If you help get this done, you are helping get the 5. 5 Trillion bill done. We heard a rebuttal on that same Fox News Sunday Program from Transportation Secretary Pete buttegeig who pointed to the number of republicans who support the bipartisan deal at least as evidence that it is fiscally fobl and talked about the benefits that the american public will see once these pieces of legislation are passed will justify the cost to the american. Mike, thank you So much. Speaking of the Reconciliation Measure that mike just mentioned i would like to go ahead and bring back Congresswoman Barbara Lee as the senate right now works to get that bipartisan closer to the finish as mike mentioned Some of your progressive colleagues said they will not vote for a bipartisan bill until a Reconciliation Package is alSo voted on by the senate. Where do you stand on that . First, a deal is a deal. And the speaker said over and over again that she is not bringing up the bipartisan Infrastructure Bill until we get the reconciliation. I believe we will get the bill. For example, women are out of the work force. They need Child Care to be able to get back into the work force, to be able to apply and to work on many of the jobs that the Infrastructure Bill will create. So im confident that the speaker is going to pull the caucus together, as she always does, and that we are going to move forward based on the agreements that were made. Can we talk about the Price Tag for a minute. Frankly, if the senate has to scale back, what is your Red Line . Is there a number thats too small or too big to get your support . I serve on the Budget Committee and the appropriations committee. Right now it is not about the numbers. We want to see Senator Sanders negotiated with the senate a 3. 5 Trillion package in terms of the budget reconciliation. Lets see what comes over to the house. But i think its important that we provide these investments in Human Beings this. Pandemic has taken its toll. We have got to make sure that there is Child Care included, funds for Child Care, investments for our women, investments for our economy. It is extremely important that we continue working on our physical infrastructure. But alSo Human Beings are So a part of keeping this country going. I mean, they are what makes sense in terms of investments. So you can have one without the other. People are people who people require the support out of this pandemic to get good paying jobs, Child Care, the care economy, all the issues we have included in the human Infrastructure Package. We have got to have both and i believe we will get both. When you talk about that investment in people. Part of that investment is alSo an access to voting. Lets talk about Voting Rights for just a minute. Attorney general Merrick Garland wrote an Op Ed and urged congress to act again to protect the right to vote. This comes as two Sources tell nbc News Chuck Schumer said there will be votes on federal legislation before the august recess. What is your confidence in the senate getting this lieu . Do you think thats possible . And possible by august . Well, Senator Schumer and others are involved in the negotiations in senate. It is a mustdo. First of all, i was born and raised in el paSo, texas. I remember the days of the poll tax. Access to the ballot has got to be easy. What they are trying to do in these states, they are trying to take away, suppress the vote for africanamericans, people of color, senior citizens, the disabled, young people. This is a threat on our democracy. We have a constitutional right to vote. I am glad Senator Schumer said its going to happen. We have to pass hr1 and get this dark money out of politics and out of the elections. And we have to pass the John Lewis Voting rights act, hr4. We have to have both. I hope he does bring forth a bill in august, as quickly as possible, because we have to stop voter suppression. And we have to allow everyone their constitutional right to vote. Right now, states are trying to take us back, quite frankly, to the days of jim crow. And congresswoman, i mean when we talk about the investment in people and access at the ballot secure housing, safe, Fair Housing is alSo a critical piece of this. Just before i let you go, can we discuss briefly the cdc extending the eviction moratorium. You tweeted this is a huge victory. But you alSo say its only a temporary Solution. So what steps do you believe must be taken right now to not only help renters but alSo help landlords beyond this eviction moratorium. Sure. I am happy the legislation heard our plea. I want to thank him for that. And i want to salute the senators who have been fighting for weeks to bring br i this to the president s attention. We have to make sure people are not evicted. More homelessness means more transmission of the virus. People deserve the dignity and the respect of having a clean and safe home to live in. While this is a stopgap measure, Maxine Waters has a bill to extend the moratorium. Then we must get back to building an affordable Housing Strategy that recognizes that housing is a basic human right. We have got this immediate reprieve. But we understand we are going to get to another deadline. So we are going to pass legislation So peep dont have to be nervous about being thrown out on the streets. When you talk to local precincts, they say we have the money to help the families but when you talk to the families they are saying it is almost impossible to get the money into their hands, into their checking accounts in time. I appreciate we are focused on that 46 Billion thats out there to get the money to people, to the landlords, and to try to eliminate the bureaucracy and try to make sure that people have access to these funds as quickly as possible. You know, this was a lot of money and a lot of our cities and counties werent quite prepared with an infrastructure. We have to make sure that the money gets out and gets out quickly. Thats right. Peoples lives are extending on it. Congresswoman lee, i thank you for your time, your expertise and your perspective. Now to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Surging cases across the country. The u. S. Is now averaging more than 100,000 new infections daily, a level we havent seen since november of last year. In fact, all 50 states are seeing a rise in new cases. In most, infections have spiked more than 100 . That is just in the last two weeks. Today dr. Fauci warning there could Sooning 200,000 new cases every day allowing for a potentially even more serious variant to develop. If you allow the virus to freely circulate and not try and stop it, Sooner or later, there is a likelihood that you will get another variant that could i am not saying it will. That could be more problematic than the delta. That will impact not only the vaccinated that will impact the vaccinated. There is new Progress Today in the push for vaccinations. More than half of all americans are now fully vaccinated against the virus. For those who are not vaccinated, new studies actually show that a vaccine gives covid survivors a big immune boost but those that are survivors from covid but not vaccinated have a greater chance to be reinfected. Travelers into canada will be required to show a negative covid test, but wont be required to quarantine. Unruly passengers what is being done to keep that from happening again. Last night an Faa Zafing Shortage at a Ground Center stopped flights headed to the east coast. This comes as there are more and more reports of unruly passengers. Now steps to monitor a passengers alcohol consumption. Sarah nelSon joins us. First off, a survey done by your group found over 85 of Flight Attendants reported dealing with an unruly passenger this year. One in five in a physical altercation. How concerned are you about these numbers . What is it like for Flight Attendants . We are concerned. We have never seen this. It is an epidemic thats out of control. It is a small number of people but the number of times we are experiencing this on the job is exponentially more than anything before. What is it like for Flight Attendants . They know their uniform is a target of Some of the aggression. It is difficult, difficult as they are thinking about, normally they are trained to deal with issues like this maybe once in a 30year career. But now every day they are wondering if this is the day that they get punched in the face, or elbowed, or kicked or spit on . Heart breaking to even think about. Even as passengers, those of us who Travel Daily For A Living we have seen a change in the behavior not only between passengers but alSo toward flight attend apartments. Do you think that the faa calling for airports to monitor a Passengers Alcohol Intake will help lower these incidents as they happen in the sky . Let me be clear that the faa administrators letter, Steve Dixon is on the heels of discussion about Flight Attendants and units about what more we need to do to coordinate. That Letter Talks about airports monitoring alcohol intake, alSo giving good information to travelers that you can drink your own alcohol imported on the plane unless it is served by the Air Carrier and that you are going to be denied boarding if you are inebriated. The Traffic Light System that bartenders know is Something-everybody'>Something Everybody knows about. The letter was making sure airports, airlines, Law Enforcement are all coordinating to tamp down these events and doing everything we can to keep the problems off the plane. And then alSo prosecuting when these events are happening So people understand clearly there are severe consequences. Speaking of those consequences a lot of the tension we have seen is around masks and vaccinations. Auto united announced on friday they are actually going to require all of their employees to be vaccinated. What do you think of that . Should other airlines frankly follow suit . I think we are probably likely to see this across the industry very Soon. I we have done everything we can as a union to work with our airlines on Incentive Programs to make sure people have the incentive to get the vaccine. It is important to work with unions to ensure the process they have laid out for people to get vaccinated, working with clinics to make sure they can easily access vaccines. So it is really important that we put a final lid on this. As long as we are making sure that we are working with each of the employees and the unions and the processes that are included, then this is the right step. All right. Sarah nelSon for us. Sarah, thank you for your time. We appreciate it. Thanks. Coming up next, the new twist in the big lie. And the senator who says he was struck by how close the country came to total catastrophe. We are back with a developing story. Explosive new revelations about former Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and Former Acting deputy Attorney General richard donahue, giving testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The interviews were part of the Committees Investigation into whether former president Donald Trump was trying to enlist the department of justice to assist in his efforts to overturn the 2020 president ial election results. This morning, Dick Durbin revealing what mr. Rosen said yesterday. He appeared voluntarily and cooperated with us. There was a lot there. You can imagine, seven hours of testimony. And it really is important that we asked these questions because what was going on in the department of justice was frightening from a constitutional point of view. Joining us now, Richard Blumenthal, a member of the judiciary committee, and who was in that room during that interview. Lets start with how the interviews came about. You heard Chairman Durbin say that rosen showed up voluntarily. What were the circumstances that led to that . How significant is it that he did go of his own volition . It was significant that he appeared voluntarily because the department of justice waived whatever barriers it might have imposed on him. And i think it showed his willingness, indeed his eagerness to cooperate. I hope that other witnesses will be similarly cooperative. Because it is essential, abSolutely vital, that the american people have this story from Jeffrey Rosen. And everyone in the department of justice who lived through this threat to our democracy in real time and i was there for all of those seven hours. And i will tell you, i was struck by how close this nation came to catastrophe. The american people deserve to know as well. What do you mean by that . When you say, we were So close to catastrophe, what specifically did you see that raised such Alarm Bells . Let me be very blunt. The president of the united states, then Donald Trump, mounted a Pressure Campaign that was abSolutely relentless, brutal, perSonally involved, directly aimed at the department of justice seeking to break it and weaponize it to overthrow the election. He Sought, in effect, to engineer the deputy of justice taking his side in calling the election corrupt and overthrowing it. And he was relentless in seeking that goal. And So only the department of justice refusing to break, standing up to him, was the means to avoid that kind of catastrophe. I want to go back to Something you just said. When you said that he issued threats. Were those threats to actual people . They were threats to specific officials involving their job. But what weve learned i think will be in a report. I am not going to answer that question in great detail. Okay. Because i think we should rely on the report. But, plainly, what Jeffrey Rosen told us raises more questions that need to be answered with more witnesses. And the decision about those witnesses is obviously up to the chairman, richard durbin, but im hoping that we will pursue witnesses. When you say you will pursue witnesses, will your committee hear any testimony from any former trump officials in the next few days . Do you mind sharing who, if So . A number have been mentioned, for example, Jeffrey Clark who was one of the individuals who took Donald Trumps side. He was a department of Justice Official at the time. There are others in the White House, potentially in the department of justice. I am not going to name names at this time. I am hoping they will be voluntary in their testimony. And the Expector General alSo has a report that will be done. Our report, i hope, will be done as quickly as possible because the american people really deserve to know how close we came to a democratic catastrophe. We lived through the Saturday Night massacre. It was almost a repeat. Very nearly a repeat of that kind of threat. It is certainly difficult when you hear the level of trauma that many people are dealing with in the aftermath. Give me The Big Picture here. What were the main questions this your committee really wanted answered in those interviews . Did you learn anything new that perhaps you did not know before . It was much more graphic and dramatic detail. And the questions really go to the heart of what Donald Trump tried to do. They threw a Pressure Campaign that stopped at nothing. Of course he used other means, like inciting the January 6th riot, with the same goal. And what struck me perSonally was how relentless he seemed to be in mounting this Pressure Campaign, in sustaining it, seeking to weaponize the department of justice, which should be an independent Law Enforcement agency in that goal. And the questions i still have relate to the role of other people, the full picture about how he was able to enlist others in his cause. And alSo, i think there are Some Profiles In Courage here that the american people deserve to hear more. When you talk about Profiles In Courage, can you talk what exactly rosen did to push back . And where would we be now if he hadnt . Thats part of the really graphic detail. Because he lived through it in real time. He had to stand up to the president perSonally. In direct meetings and phone calls. So, again, im constrained as to what i can say about the details. But they were really chilling. Because the president of the united states has aweSome power. The Oval Office is a place where that power bears full weight. So for any Attorney General to say no to a president and to enlist a department of justice leadership, all of the top officials in saying they would walk is a moment in history that really deserves to be fully captured. Senator, if i can ask just finally, what happens next, with all of this information . My hope is that this information will be part of a report. Again, the chairman of the committee, Dick Durbin is the one to direct which witnesses we will invite. We have the power to subpoena. Whether that power can be used remains to be seen. But i alSo hope it will be bipartisan. There were both republican and democratic Senators Yesterday in that closed meeting. It should be open to the public. I hope it will be with bipartisan support. Open in the sense of the transcript to eventually be made public. And alSo the report, made fully public, in a lot of these details. So i hope the course ahead will be bipartisan. Im Sorry, sir. When you said earlier, you said it is essential that the american people understand the truth of what happened. And then you talk about this report being made public. When . When can we expect to see that . I hope, again, in a we will proceed promptly and the report will be made public as Soon as possible. Obviously, we are in the midst of an ongoing investigation. So the length of time taken for it i know very well as a former federal and state lawyer, federal Prosecutor And State Attorney General, that investigations have to be given the time thats needed to get at the truth and follow the facts and law. Senator, based on what you do know i appreciate your candor, and i understand that you can give all of the details. But based on what you have heard, in your professional opinion, what could happen to the former president as a result of what you just described as those chilling details . Is it possible that there could be action taken against the former president . I want to put aside talking about specific individuals. But i will say, as a former united States Attorney and a state Attorney General for 20 years, there is a real potential here for criminal charges. They should be seriously considered. All of the facts and the law will be thoroughly examined by this department of justice. Very different under Merrick Garland than the one before. While there were Some Profiles In Courage here because actually the department of justice refused to break under the relentless Pressure Campaign mounted by the president , there are alSo Some officials who did his bidding. There should be consideration of criminal charges for them, and others who may have been complicity in this very egregious cause. Not just the president , but others. We certainly will be waiting for the public details of that report. Senator, i know you and your colleagues are especially busy, always but certainly this weekend. I appreciate you taking the time. And the candor. I know it is hard Sometimes when you can give the full scope. Even what you are able to share with the american people, we are appreciative of. Lawmakers confirming former Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen spent more than seven Hours Yesterday testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee for its investigation into the former president. This is all as another former a. G. , eric holder, is speaking out about developments in the investigation with pretty strong words about former President Trump and his administration. I mean, what we are seeing here was, in essence, a coup attempt, and an attempt by people at the White House to try to get the Justice Department to be the foundation for that coup by having the Justice Department say with no basis in fact that there was no Election Irregularities in Some critical states and then use that as the way in which you would delay. Joining me, hayes brown. Thanks for being with us. First off, that word, coup, that kind of hit you in the Solar plexus. What do you make of holers comments . Was that word an appropriate description . It was an appropriate description. I am glad he used that term. What has become clear and clearer as we moved away from the election, a way from november this wasnt a Hodgepodge Effort to try to slow things down, delay the inevitable like it seemed at the time to a lot of people. Instead, by the time we get to january where you have a. G. Rosen in meetings fighting for his job against lower level deputies who would be more inclined to say that there was fraud by that point there was an idea in place within Some circles in the Trump Administration that, look, as long as we can say that there was fraud and take it to congress, where we think we might be able to deny Joe Biden certification, that was the idea. There was an idea behind it. Was this an idea that could work . Maybe, in a different congress, it could have been pulled off. But the fact that we are at this point where we are even talking about, well, was this a successful coup . No. Its still not great. Right. You are right. It was the organization, i think that really made the difference there, too. What is your biggest takeaway from everything we now though about rosens testimony . Im sure you just heard our interview with senator blumenthal. What is your take away. My big takeaway, first i am glad he had the Common Sense to push this forward fast the say no i dont want to be in a situation where there are lawsuits keeping me from speaking. He said as Soon as he got the Geen Light he organized with the Inspector General and congress. Secondly i am glad we had this bureaucratic stonewall against this plot because what is scary about this i am just pulling this together now is that the idea was they were going to take it over to elected officials. Bureaucrats were going to say there was fraud and kick it over to congress So that trump could stay in power. The fact that it was the bureaucrats who said no this is not right and not the elected officials is kind of terrifying to me. I want to switch gears. There are new polls showing President Bidens Approval Ratings are slipping slightly since the start of this year. What do you make of that drop . What specifically with the americans not happy with .
