Okay, so not to sound like a superstitious lottery player, but we kept seeing the numbers show up in the news this week. 50. Covid19 cases are rising again in all 50 states. New cases are up an average of nearly 50 . In the last seven days. There was some promising news. The u. S. Crossed the halfway mark. 50 of americans are now fully vaccinated. So where does that leave the rest of the country . Still struggling somewhat to win over unvaccinated adults. In a new poll this week, just over 50 of them say getting the shot is riskier to their health than getting covid. In reality, vaccines cause Side Effects that soon subside. Covid can kill you. The poll also found 57 of unvaccinated adults thought the press had generally exaggerated the seriousness of the pandemic. Only 17 of vaccinated adults agree with that statement. So how do we convince more people to get the shot . Well, some of americas major companies are ending the debate, at least for their employees. The walt disney company, tyson foods, and United Airlines are requiring staffs to be vaccinated before returning to the office this fall. Other businesses like vanguard are using Bonus Incentives to get more shots in arms. Even the White House is jumping on board. Last Week President biden urged state and local governments to give 100 to anyone who is newly vaccinated. But initiatives like that can only work if local governments are on board, and florida is clearly not, at least at the state level. The Sunshine State has reported a record high number of new covid19 cases this week. Republican Governor Ron Desantis Is Banning Mask Mandates in schools. Hes depicted another shutdown as a greater threat than the virus itself. This week the governor also tried to downplay the outbreak by attacking the press. He accused reporters of creating hysteria. Which brings us back to that number, 50. Remember we said 57 of unvaccinated adults said the media was exaggerating this pandemic . Well, another poll this week found that after Fox News hosts shifted their tone on the shot, Vaccine Skepticism fell to an alltime low among their viewers. So how do we get everyone on the same page . And what is the best approach to getting more people protected against covid. Lets begin there with our Saturday Night panel. In terms of where you think we might be going with getting this pandemic under control, for example, this week new York Citys Mayor Bill de blasio announced that vaccinations will be required for indoor dining, while working out at gyms. I personally have seen the behavior of my Gym Patrons and am delighted by this. Some people dont understand of you to wipe things down, but i understand the argument you might have, a disproportionately impact on communities of color or disenfranchised communities. How do you see it . Thank you so much for having me. I feel like i dont have i just dont understand the privilege of deciding not to take a vaccine or not to comply with the vaccine in the midst of a global pandemic. Joshua, i grew up in bangladesh in the 1980s. I was one of the last babies in the world to be vaccinated against Smallpox And Bangladesh is one of the last countries. I think about how we eradicated major pandemics like smallpox, like polio. I dont think it should be a choice. And i dont think we can afford for people to choose not to get vaccinated. Eric, what about the way some companies are dealing with this, including some companies in the media industry. We mentioned the walt disney company. We learned this Week Cnn fired three staffers who came into their offices unvaccinated. The president of cnn sent a memo saying we set a rule, its no to school no tolerance. Theyre going to say all employees have to be vaccinated to enter events and venues and offices. Eric, how do you see this . Yeah. Unfortunately, given the way that some Media Outlets and some politicians have politicized this issue, i think it will eventually fall to private industry and businesses to require their employees and staffers to be vaccinated in order to bump up these numbers. One of the things, of course, that businesses have to be concerned about is becoming superspreaders of their own. They dont want unvaccinated employees to spread the virus to unvaccinated customers. It will also, i think, help convince people that these vaccines are safe. If they have to get one for their employment and then they go through it and realize that the Side Effects are minor or nonexistent, perhaps that will help convince other people that they know that are also vaccine resistant to go ahead and get the shot. But, you know, employers are on safe ground mandating this. I live in florida. I cant believe what my governor is doing. You know, positioning this as some sort of choice when really what hes doing is robbing choice from individual School Districts throughout the state, not allowing them to make their own decisions about whats best for their community. Whatever we we can encourage people to get vaccinations, we have to take those actions. I hear you in terms of better understanding of Side Effects. If of you watching this and not sure about getting vaccinated, you should just know that not all of us who got vaccinated get Side Effects. I got the pfizer vaccine, both shots, zero Side Effects. You may not react at all. Josh johnson, what are your senses about where you would like to see similar rules like this, especially for someone like you who is a Standup Comedian who im sure has been eager to get back to the stage and back to life as normal. How do you see the way we kind of reengage and set rules to get everybody back together again . I mean, i think for the first time a lot of it has to do with the fact that theres a Sense Of, like, choice being taken away, like eric was saying. And i think that, you know, the adjustments made during 2020 to be able to do comedy, like having comedy outdoors on rooftops and patios, that put a lot of people at ease. It also facilitated people feeling more comfortable. I think as we get to that threshold where we are, like, sole creeping in the right direction, once someones vaccinated, theyre vaccinated, you know . So i know that it doesnt completely eliminate the Threat And Everything doesnt magically go away, but every new person getting vaccinated is a win for all of us to be able to come together in the way that were used to. We mentioned that research about Media Consumption and its effect on vaccination rates. I wonder what your sense is of the impacts of that in terms of how we fight this pandemic. Im never really sure how much to put the blame on an outlet on our Colleagues Literature across The Street from this building for the way they have talked about the pandemic or whether to put more that have on us, because were playing the same game, and this just might mean we have needed to step up our game. And the way that we talk about the pandemic. Im always of two minds about that. But how do you see it . Joshua, i think its never been more important that facts matter. And i think america is in a really unique situation because, like you said, our friends across The Street have a huge audience. And what they tell their audience matters, especially in the face of this pandemic. And i think that more than ever its criminal to give people incorrect information. If weve ever been in a situation where we should follow the science and follow the facts, it is now in the face of covid. So i think that initially when it was, you know, Cable News channels networks just blaming the other one for the rise in the pandemic, now were seeing it really matters when our message is consistent and we stick with the facts. In the vein of sticking with the facts, let me clarify something about Live Nation with regards to requiring vaccinations at shows. Live nation established a system whereby the artists can choose to require attendees and staff to be fully vaccinated. With regards to one of the most significant statistics in that survey we mentioned earlier, is the Impact Snapchat users, no offense to viewers of Cable News. What is your Sense Of younger people, millennials . Im amazed in some ways that younger folks are not even more savvy about the vaccine than their parents and are lining up to get vaccines because young people, i think, have a much better facility with digital information than their parents and grandparents do. Im not entirely sure whats going wrong. I mean, Okay. And i know you dont speak for all millennials. Im not trying to do that, but do that. Sure, sure. I mean, also, you know, youre also asking the person with the worst lighting system. The whole thing going up my colleagues to my Left And Right are killing it. You got that convincing microphone with the beautiful compression. Im a radio did, i hear it. I know what you did. Thats very kind. I think that one thing that is happening is that when you engage in social a bit more and you have multiple outlets the same users of Senate Chat are also using tiktok, instagram, and some still use Facebook Messenger for the most part. I find that so much more conversation is happening in that way of taking in content as opposed to when you are a Cable News viewer. To a certain degree, you pick your one, maybe your two and three at tops. Even the three is mostly, i find, older adults are politically engaged trying to get a wellroundedness of perspective. But i find that not that online is better because mistakes can happen online and theres no retractions and misinformation can fly even faster. But i just find that the way that people young people especially are informing themselves about things is, like, theres a different mindset towards Gathering Information than our parents have. Like, you know, im not knocking it at all because its very important. Thats what got us here. But i think that for some people, they think, Okay, if im going to learn about something, im going to run over to the library and read a book about it and have some conversations with some people who also might know about it. Right. Whereas there are young People None of that ever occurs to them. Theyre, like, im going to google it and google a more specific question, and then im going to google another question, and then im going to dm my friend to see if they heard what i heard. The same way that can go horribly wrong. Dont get me wrong. Gathering information is Gathering Information. But it also lends itself to being informed more quickly and more efficiently than ever before. Well, let me suggest that, you know, i mean, i google things all the time. I will say that when i google something like that in the news, i end my Search String with nbc. So if im looking for Covid Vaccination facts, ill write Covid Vaccination Facts Nbc so that articles from Nbc News come up higher in the search because its a trusted source. Jeopardy may be close to choosing a permanent successor to the legendary Alex Trebek a diverse lineup of Guest Hosts have been auditioning. Mr. Trebek passed away last december. A source close to the situation said other candidates remain in the mix, although mr. Richards is clearly the frontrunner. Jeopardy declined to comment on that. The report left many fans of the show surprised, and some frustrated. Fan favorite will he Var Burton appeared to address the report in a tweet writing, quote, no matter the outcome, ive won. The outpouring of Love And Support from family, friends, and fans alike has been incredible, unquote. Viewers also expressed concern about past harassment and Discrimination Lawsuits involving mr. Richards. Nbc news reached out to Sony Pictures television which produces jeopardy . The show declined to comment on the allegations made in the suits. Mike richards was unavailable for comment. Our panel is back with us. Eric, let me start with you and your Sense Of whats happening behind the scenes. Sure. So this report that variety came up with indicating that the shows Executive Producer was the frontrunner to get the job caused quite a stir because some people felt as if this whole process by which they had Guest Hosts coming in was a bit of a head fake, and that it was always sort of the intention that he was going to take over the job. But he wanted to make it look like they were considering other candidates, including a diverse slate of candidates, including people of color, in particular, leVar Burton, who has a whole public campaign on Social Media to give him a chance to guest host. He got the chance, and before we could even see the ratings for his performance, we hear this report that richards is under consideration to become the permanent host. And theres also some reporting suggesting that when he was running the Price Is Right there were claims made by some of the models who appeared there that helping the have been discriminated against when they got pregnant. So theres question about what happened in other shows that he ran and whether or not he has a clean slate as an Executive Producer and whether they might not want to reconsider some of the other people who were contenders for that slot. Since you brought up the lawsuits, let me add more detail to that. You mentioned the Discrimination Lawsuit from 2010 with a former model who accused mr. Richards of treating her differently after she announced she was pregnant. Documents show the suit was settled out of court. There was another model in 2011 who accused mr. Richards treating her differently than other models. A copy of that suit from the times says he refused to speak to her about anything. The suit was later dropped and the suit was settled, according to the daily beast. As we mentioned, jeopardy has declined to comment on the allegations. I wonder what your read is on this. On one hand, i feel like it could be a head fake. We spoke to leVar Burton and he said it would make him exceedingly glad to be the next host. Jeopardy was the most watched syndicated show for 11 of the first 16 weeks after Alex Trebek was no longer the host. This is a Cash Cow and i kind of understand the Business Decision of saying we just need someone who knows how to milk this Cash Cow and No One knows it more than the ep. Yeah. You know, joshua, i think youre being really gracious. I think as a person of color, like everybody else on this panel, i mean, when this happened, im like, really . After this whole show and such a range of amazing Guest Hosts and such a fantastic selection of diverse candidates, were going to go to the white guy in house with the shady pregnancy Discrimination Lawsuit in his past which theyre not speaking about which he hasnt personal addressed . Im really disappointed. I understand its a Cash Cow, but a white person has to be at the helm of it . I want to see a person of color get the chance to lead the show. I think its very disappointing. But as people of color, i feel like we all had a moments we were, like, can we really be surprised theyre pulling a Fast One like this . Very disappointed. If i can break in real quick. What i think the Shows Problem is is that theyre dealing with balancing the shows traditional audience, which is older and white, with the larger audience that is paying attention now because of the drama from Alex Trebeks passing and all the Guest Hosts. When you look at the ratings for the show, like i said, i havent seen the ratings for leVar Burton, but Mike Richards was the second or third highest rated guest host. So i think the Core Audience of the show likes him, and that is going to be their problem, their balancing act. Do you cast a host that may bring in a new audience . And how do you feed the constituencies thats already watching. Josh johnson, i dont know if you were pulling for any host in particular, but one of the arguments about who the next host also was was it doesnt matter who the host is because as all these hosts have shown, the format is the show. Thats why you can have jeopardy without Alex Trebek. Thats why you can have price of right without Bob Barker because its the format that makes the show ultimately pop. Yeah. I mean, i was pulling for leVar Burton. I love him. Im going to be bad at jeopardy no matter what. I rarely know what any of the answers are. You do Okay in the jeopardy round, maybe the double is where you fall off. But the first round, youd be all right. I never won a daily double in my head, so thats how i know. I understand peoples disappointment, and i get its man. If he wanted to pull a really good Fast One, they would have him, like, step down and be, like, come back as the host, you know. That would at least be liked oh, man, i wanted to leave but they pulled me back in. Anything else kind of seems like you picked yourself. Anything else kind of says its like if you had a friend that you really wanted to date, they were, like, you know, im just having troubles right now and i just want to meet somebody nice, and, well, im somebody nice. Thats kind of how this feels. The Executive Producer, i already know my way in, i got a card to get in the gate. I know your favorite foods, you know . Right. I know where all the thesauruses are, im your guy. Mike richards looks like an encyclopedia came to life, so i get why he feels like hes a good fit. I understand that. And thats not even a roast. He looks like he would know a bunch of facts that nobody asked him. I really want to say quickly, in this Day And Age in the postme too era, its not just small detail that you have more than one pregnancy Discrimination Lawsuit in your past. This is a big red flag. Yeah. And i think that is what needs to be discussed. I think one of the things about this i know we have to break is that jeopardy always had a Sense Of integrity, that it was fair and scrupulously accessible and anybody smart in and out of play could play. I feel like if youre not ready to be on a flight or if you feel like this latest incident, whats being shown right now on the split screen, i mean, i didnt know this was a real story. It almost seemed like something from, i dont know, Saturday Night live. So i dont want to blame the pandemic. I think people have a lot of issues and if youre not ready to fly, please dont fly. Seems like something from the Universal Studios tours. You go through a set of a crashed plane and then somebody starts getting crazy and the Tour Guide jumps off and goes, hold it, i can solve this works pulls out a roll, and wraps him up quickly. None of this makes sense. Eric, what about the possibility further restrictions for this . The faa has tried introducing large fines. Some airlines have cut down on alcohol sales. I havent heard anything in terms of, like, other mandates, including vaccination mandates on flights. But im not sure what makes a difference other than some of us just showing up with a roll of Duct Tape when we see somebody acting up and being like im telling you, man. I like joshs idea, man. Just a little serious in saying that i do think that weve all been through a lot in the last year and a half, right . It makes sense to pull away from the craziness of life and be with people who rejuvenate you. Everyone should have a tribe like that. So why dont we . A recent survey suggests we used to. And weve lost our tribes in a huge way. Back in may, the Survey Center on american life asked 2,000 american adults about their friendships, specifically how many close friends they have, not including relatives. The shift in how people answer this question is kind of heartbreaking. Check out the drop in survey responses now compared to the year 1990. According to the survey, 15 of men say they have no close friends at all, zero. Back in 1990, only 3 of men said that. Friendlessness showed up worse in men than women. Today 10 of women say they have no close friends. And look at the other end of the spectrum. The folks who say they have ten or more close friends, that dropped sharply, down 17 percentage points among women, 25 points for men. Now, its not that people dont consider friendships important. Another survey taken in june shows people rank having good friends first among the keys to a fulfilling life. Friendships were deemed essential to an enjoyable career and more essential than a marriage or romantic relationship. So whats going on . We know americans are divided along political lines. But too many of us may be defining our friendships more by those lines than by who we actually care about. I mean, its one thing if the enemy of my enemy is my friend. But what happens when the key to being your friend is being the enemy of your enemy . Commentator David French wrote about this recently. He calls this a faction friendship. And they can be fragile friendships indeed. Quote, they depend on an extraordinary degree of agreement and conformity. Ive experienced this myself. Many of us have. Friendships built up through years of engagement in politics and activism vanished in the blink of a tweet. Youre not with us . Then were not with you. Theres nothing wrong with befriending people who view the world the way you do. The women Tiffany Cross spent her vacation with have the same politics, which is cool. But they need to be for the same things including each other. Its easy to band together with folks who validate your anger or your fear. Faction friendships are perfect for that.
