Ahead this hour ill talk to the doctor leading the Covid Unit. The majority of those patients are being vaccinated. It comes as theyre rolling out new vaccinations for children this very week. Another beger big story, an impeachment show down with governor cuomo. We start with josh letterman, Katie Beck in atlanta georgia. And Shaquille Brewster is in springfield, missouri. And i want to bring in dr. Bernard ashley. Thank you all for joining me. Josh, let me begin with you. Could we require foreign travelers to the u. S. To be vaccinated . Yes, but it is a work in progress. White house officials saying this will not be an immediate step. They are describing this as part of a fazed approach. So they are going to, at some point, require vaccinations for people entering the u. S. In some limited exceptions that we still dont know exactly what they will be. We know that other countries like britain, canada, they have started to lift sop of their restrictions on americans. The long list of countries like the u. K. , china, india, and others. Where people who have been there cannot visit the united states. The u. S. Also planning to keep in place that anyone entering the u. S. Needs a covid test. Any idea when the changes will take effect . We dont have a Time Line on this. Theyre not ready to roll this out yet. But they are under increasing pressure from the airlines, from u. S. Allies, as well as from Family Members of americans who have not gotten to see their Loved Ones in so long. Josh, thanks, louisiana is seeing a Record Number of kids hospitalized right now. What are you hearing from people there . Yeah, jose, it is absolutely heartbreaking. Hospitals across the state seeing Record Numbers of hospitalizations. But it is especially pronounced here at the Childrens Hospital in new orleans. We know that one in three patients is under the age of 12 meaning they cannot get vaccinated. If you want to try to keep the children safe, the best thing that parents and guardians can do is get themselves vaccinated. That essentially creates a natural barrier, if you will, against trying to stop the spread of this Delta Variant that is reeking havoc. I spoke to a child who ended up in the hospital and had to be put on oxygen after developing pneumonia. I want you to hear what they told me after that excruciaing or deal. I never dreamed that she would be in a hospital. It is hard. It is hard as a parent to see your child in a hospital possibly you dont know what is going to happen next. We have heard from parents all over the state about their child being taken down so quickly by the virus. Other people thought that younger patients would fair well. But doctors are seeing this new kind of patient with this particular surge and thats why theyre encouraging everyone to please get vaccinated. The big concern right now can Vaccination Rates rise enough to keep Hospitalization Levels at bay. Were seeing Waiting Lists for Intensive Care Units at hospitals across the state of louisiana, jose . Morgan, you said one in three cases are people under 12 years of age . One in three of the patients here at the Childrens Hospital here are under the age of 12 meaning theyre not yet eligible for the vaccine and thats why doctors are stressing their parents and guardians need to be vaccinated to keep them as safe as possible. In the meantime keep the hands clean and mask up. Morgan, thank you so much. How do you keep kids from filling up hospitals. As i said before, the equation has changed the fact that florida banned any Mask Mandates in a School Setting is particularly upsetting. As you can see in that heartbreaking example where that young lady got sick, i expect that here. And child hospitalization rate. But in addition to that, teachers are going to say there is more community outbreaks, so the Collateral Damage is unmeasurable. How bad is it right now, how because is it with what you saw last summer . This is ptsd. This is, i feel like im in an alternative world. Were right back where we started last year. Modifying all of our patients. And this is something that i thought was well behind us. But with our leadership not doing their job, particularly our governor they are essentially antimask. They are saying that masks are basically worth less. We have leaders with no mechanic interjecting themselves. It is a particularly concerning time, for sure. Shaq, you got to see firsthand what it is like right now for first responders there in springfield in this lattest covid surge. Walk us through what it is like. Firefighters here are usually the first to respond to the emergency calls when patients turn into additional hospitalizations. We saw this rush to the firetruck as they got calls on shortness of breath. And they saw the scramble that theyre dealing with. I talked to the Fire Chief and he said we may see a Mass Casualty Event happen in slow motion. Listen to how he is describing it today. Our community is still in crisis. We continue to be inundated with sick and sicker patients than we have seen before president the scale when you look at the covid spikes, thats what it feels like. Its like riding that initially uphill on a roller coaster. We did reach out to mercy hospital, there is a 54 increase in hospitalizations. The average age of the Covid Patient theyre dealing with right now is 37 years old. They said when you get in the hospital things turn for the worse because out of those patients once you hit the icu only 51 of those patients end up leaving alive. And the age is dropped so significantly, shack. Shaq. Just like you were hearing from the others there, a lot of children are ending up in the hospitals as well. Katie, it is the first day of school for metro atlanta, everyone has to wear a mask but there has been some back and forth, right . The governor says he is against Mask Mandates and he will not put one in place, but cities like atlanta that do have indoor Mask Man days are having schools carry that in the classroom as well. But just down where were standing is Cobb County. In Cobb County theyre leaving it up to parents and students to decide whether or not they wear a mask. And feeling pretty good about that decision. The parents that we spoke to said their children have not seen their classmates in 18 months. They feel extremely grateful for the possibility of inperson learning. This was not an option in the last School Year. This year it exists but without masks. Here is some parent thats we spoke to on their way in this morning. How are you feeling about her areaing a Mask Today . Im really glad. Its safer, there is no reason to expose the children to i unnecessary risk. These kids are good to go. They wore masks all last year. They were really comfortable and were really excited theyre back in person. We talked to the superintendent here. She said one thing with Room For Improvement is vaccination among her staff. She would like to see that number higher and 18 of students eligible for the vaccine have received it. She is hopeful by doing clinics and offering vaccines on School Campuses it will raise the numbers as the School Year progresses. Josh, 18 of the kids that could be vaccinated have been vaccinated. One in three patients are, because of covid. The White House, josh, is set to announce a new plan for the final Big Push to get the kids vaccinated before the start of the School Year . That is right. Theyre turning to one of the things that students are looking forward to first. Officials estimate that 50 to 60 participate in sports. That is part of a new strategy that they will be announcing today when they appear here at the White House and they are looking for Pop Up Vaccination Clinics in schools. They are also paying surprise visits to Pta Meetings for as many students possible to get vaccinated. Were really talking about the older students here, jose. The ones here in hobble. Those younger ones will not be Ebl Jibl still at this time. And the first day of school is rapidly approaching right now. What do you think about this debate over the fact that kids should be vaccinated, should have masks, what do you suggest . What do you tell us parents . So with the science it is pretty clear. You have multiple studies that have shown that kids are safe when they get vaccinated and it is very popular in that population. The coronavirus is not going near. You want to be exposed when youre immune. It is a fundamental mitigation strategy, and the fact that were not doing it is egregious. Doctor, i want to go back to the White House quickly. Lets listen in. We are seeing shots. We have recorded 864 vaccinations. The highest in a day since july 3rd. That is the highest since July 1th we have continued to increase the number of daily cases. With doubled the number of people vaccinated each day in the states with the highest case rates. Louisiana, arkansas, missouri, alabama, and mississippi are vaccinating people at a pace not seen since april. People are also picking up their case. Tennessee has has soon a 66 increase in shots in the first two weeks. And they are responding by doing their parting with rolling up their sleeve, and getting vaccinated. In addition were spurring Vaccination Requirements. Last week they announced requirements for all federal workers and federal requirements. Businesses know that vaccinations are a way to keep workers and customers safe and keep their doors open. Yelp is allowing consumers to search businesses that require vaccinations to enter the business. Half of small businesses are likely required to have their staff vaccinated. One company is Requirements Vaccinations for all customers. The owner said the Community Response has been overwhelmingly positive. Yesterday leaders of the historically black medical schools decided to mandate vaccines for all medical students. Nationwide over 100 Hospital And Health care systems including the department of Veteran Affairs are Requirements Vaccinations. One of the countrys largest announced Vaccination Requirements for their Health Care workers. So americas businesses, large and small, universities and medical schools and many other institutions are stepping up on Vaccination Requirements. And our message is quite simple. We support them to protects workers, communities, and the country. As we double down were stepping up our work to help states experiencing rising cases. Our Covid19 Surge Response teams are now working with 16 states to trease their specific needs, to encouraging more informations to use Antibody Treatments to help them address Hospital Capacity issues. Let me close with this. From the beginning we have known that this virus is unpredictable. Our whole of Government Response will continue its relentless efforts to end this pandemic and deliver progress each and every day. With that let me turn it over to dr. Wolinski. To keep things brief i will give you a overview of the data and the state of where we are as a country. Yesterday the cdc reported 133,000 new cases of covid19. Our Sevenday Average is about 89463 cases per day. This represents an increase of 43 from the prior Sevenday Average. The Sevenday Average is about 7348 per day, an increase of about 41 and Sevenday Average daily deaths have increased to 381 per day. An increase of more than 31 from the previous seven day period. We saw 614 new deaths reported to the cdc on tuesday. 83 of our counies in the united states are experiencing moderate or high transmission with Delta Variant to be the predominant circulating virus. Were seeing increasing cases and hospitalizations in all age groups. Those at highest risk remain those not yet vaccinated. We know the vaccines are working and we know they save lives. Thank you all, and i will turn things over to dr. Fauci. Thank you, i would just like to spend a minute or two addressing a concern that i continue to hear regarding the speed with which the vaccines were developed. This is usually among people who have a degree of Vaccine Hesitancy or reluctance to get vaccinated. It really relates to two things that have gone on that people need to appreciate. One is the Logistics And Investment in resources made, and others is the decades of basic and clinical research that antidated the vaccine. Generally when you develop a vaccine, the thing that usually takes years to do, you do it in a question is sequential fashion. In order to not waste money, as it were, you do something preclinical, Phase One, phase two, phase three and then you start manufacturing the product. You do that because if the first one doesnt succeed, you dont want to go to the second, third, and fourth step. Because of the wise investment in operation warp speed, and we give credit to the Trump Administration for doing this, particularly secretary alex azar, what you did was make an investment to prepare for phase two and phase three even before you knew if Phase One worked or not and to start manufacturing. When you do that you make a major investment in resources. If the vaccine doesnt work you lost a lot of money. If the vaccine does work you save a lot of time and that is exactly what happened. In addition we had the Trial Sites that we built decades earlier for hiv and influenza, and third unfortunately for us, but fortunately for the vaccine trials, we were in the middle of the Summer Surge when the phase three trials were initiated. So next comes basic and clinical research, both in Platform Technology and immunogen. It didnt start in January Of 2020 when the sequence was put on a public database. The data, the experiences, on Mrna Approach that was funded predominantly by the nih, and industry involved, started decades earlier to develop an Mrna Molecule that could be used for a vaccine. In addition the vector based approach, such as The One that J J did was again done 10 or 20 years earlier with hiv and now a very, very elegant work of the development of an immunogen that get the high Efficacy And Effectiveness that we got. Was work done at the Nih Vaccine Research center and by many grantees over the previous one to two decades. So when people say im concerned this went too fast, it did not go too fast. It was a major investment, both in the logistics, the resources, and the clinical and basic research. So i will hand it now back to you, jeff. Over to dr. Murphy. Thank you, jeff, it is great to be with all of you again this morning. As cases have risen, it is americaning wondering what this means for them and their families. Today i want to emphasize one fact that remains true. That is that the vaccines are working against the Delta Variant. Theyre highly effective at hospitalization and death. And theyre effective against the overall cause. They are 88 effective against symptomatic Covid19 Infection with the Delta Variant. So breakthrough innexts are the exception, not the rule. And when they happen the vast majority are mild or a symptomatic. That is a vaccine. And recognizing the effort to continue to vaccinate the nation we brought together the former surgeon generals. To discuss our Covid19 Response with the meeting. The Public Health Leaders that have been friends and mentors and partners to me spoke about their concerns, about the importance of ensuring that the areas of color do not fall behind, and the trusted community based organizations. And finally, it reflected the diversity of the nation, and it has to do with what we have to do to defeat the virus. And we all share the belief that science and Public Health will help us protect our nation from this pandemic. So thank you for your time today and i will turn it back over to jeff. Hey, guys, we know that boosters are still under consideration, so can you tell us are they available and are there any updates . It is clear now that they do not make, in general, with some exceptions, but in general, do not make an adequate response that we feel would be adequately protected. So in this regard it is extremely port for us to move to get those individuals their boosters and we are working on that and we will make that implemented as quickly as possible. For us it is a very high priority. You have both warned that the virus may mutate and perhaps into a train powerful enough to evade the vaccine. Is there any way to gauge how long before the virus overtakes the vaccine . And so that we understand what that mean Social Security there a way to tweak it in that situation in order to give us protection . Yes, there is a Lock Standing Tenant that viruses continue replicate unless they mutate. So the scenario that youre proposing would mean to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as we possibly can. Making sure it doesnt have ample time to mutate. Not everything will be a functional change, but every once in awhile you get a series or a constellation of mutations and you do that and you get a functional change. The Delta Variant became significantly more able to transmit. We have to prevent that and you do that by not allowing the virus to not freakily circulate. You protect the target thats are not vaccinated by vaccinating them. And you block the variants that could be problematic. Next question . Sharon from the New York times. Thank you, many experts say the falling Antibody Levels that they site as evidence that Booster Shots are needed are not convincing because people may still be protected even with those. If that is so, what is the right signal . Is it vaccinated people to end up being sick enough to go to the hospital . And can the government wait for that . And what are the chances that the Delta Variant will burn out so to speak here in a month or so like in india and the uk. Yeah, were going to make the decision based on a compilation of evidence. Our Immune System also has T Cell responses so this will be a combination of evidence, as well as Clinical Trial data and our cohort data that monitor the safety and the effectiveness of our vaccines in many different populations, Tens Of Thousands of people, essential workers, reasonable Care Providers welcome people Vax Natted early in the process and it will be a combination of that evidence that helps inform our strategy 37. Reaffirming that vaccines are effective against coronavirus and if youre vaccinated its a way to stop the spread of this disease. A big update. Are you encouraged by this . Definitely. That is very promising News Nap is something that we have been trying to do from the start which is increase the Vaccination Rates in the entire country and particularly in areas where they are he has tent and vulnerable. Another thing is the focus on equity. We need to make sure the vaccines are going to be, the entire population, but particularly in areas under resourced, under funded, and vulnerable. So im glad theyre putting a focus on that. Also, antibody therapy. That is the most effective therapy we have right now that is under utilized. They have been subsidized by the government. They need to be available for all outpatient settings. It increases the risk of hospitalization and death. I think it is important that you talk about the under represented communities in our country. Our communities, the latino community, has been disproportionately the most effected by covid, and it seems like our communities are The Ones the least getting vaccinated. And just to be clear they have had relatively low Vaccination Rates. We have to understand that these populations are being forgotten. People are like why do you care about me now . I think it is important to take a more comprehensive approach to show that you care about these populations and now discussing on the populations beyond the vaccine. I guarantee if you look at them the Vaccination Rates will for sure increase. That is such a great rate. Can we soon see a requirement for active Duty Service members . That is a distinct possibility. All Military And Defense Department Personal will have to attest to their vaccination status. Kbu President Biden also specifically asked Defense Secretary us A Tin to look into when and how it can be added to the list of vaccinations for military personnel. It is a little trickier because as dr. Fauci was talking about its not fully authorized. The White House signalled this is the direction they would like to go if, they would like if possible to try to get it so you have to get the vaccine in the military. So well look for a decision very shortly from the White House on that. Thank you for being with me this morning. Still appreciate your time. Cuomo as you know is resisting calls to resign after the State Attorney General has announced the allegations. The governor denied all wrong doing. Dasha burns has the latest. Good morning. Good morning, jose. Hey say, at this point we have seen so much from this report, and that Judiciary Committee Announcement gave us an inkling on Time Line here. They gave governor Cuomos Council until 18th'>August 18th to show evil and written submissions. And theyre meeting to discuss next steps and process here. What struck me is i had a conversation with a republican Assembly Member and a democratic Assembly Member. At this point they dont know a single peer that is not for impeaching the governor. They want to move this along quickly. Democrats want to make sure they follow the proper process. And remember this is a little bit uncharted territory here. I want you to hear from the members i smoke with this morning. Its been going on for six months. It is enough right now for all of us to get to albany and take that vote. We have to make sure that were following proper procedures and by definition we are a Cliptive Body and we need to show it is done right. The consensus from most lawmakers is that there wont be a vote until a few weeks from now. But it is different to see this happen right now as there are so many crisis at the state is dealing with. So many critical issues and projects have come to a stand still and they are calling on the governor and others to resign as this point, jose. Im exhausted. Thats what one doctor said as cases a soaring once again. The patients are younger, sicker, and unvaccinated. His message to people in texas and around the country as cases climb, next. D around the countr climb, next. vo at tmobile for business, unconventional thinking means we see things differently, so you can focus on what matters most. Whether its ensuring food arrives as fresh as when it departs. Being first on the scene, when every second counts. Or teaching biology without a lab. We are the leader in 5g. 1 in customer satisfaction. And a partner who includes 5g in every plan, so you get it all. Without tradeoffs. Unconventional thinking. Its better for business. So then i said to him, you oughta customize your Car Insurance with liberty mutual, so you only pay for what you need. Hot dog or. Chicken . Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Right now texas is leading the nation in new covid cases. Just moments ago you heard it on msnbc the White House covid Response Team said texas and Florida Account for more than onethird of hospitalizations nationwide. In the last 24 hours nearly 20,000 new cases have been reported in texas. The vast majority of new cases there, texans that have not ben vaccinated. They say they are rising faster than any time during the pandemic. In houston, houston many patien are now under 50 years old with no underlying conditions. The Chief Medical Officer there also says 95 of them are unvaccinated. He joins me this morning. Dr. Joseph barron runs the Covid Center in the hospital. Dr. Barron, it is a pleasure to see you again. Your hospital recently marked 500 days of treating Covid Patients. You didnt take a single day off for over a year since the pandemic started. Your hospital now seeing levels similar to what you saw last fall. What are you seeing . Unfortunately, this is like Deja Vu. I am seeing the same thing that i saw last year. Exactly the same. I feel last year when i was feeling like there was no tomorrow. Unfortunately, were exactly at the same level. 500 increase in the number of admissions to the Covid Unit in the last three weeks. 500 . Doctor, how do you explain this and have the patients that you are treating changed as far as are they younger now . Do they have underlying conditions . Tell me how thats changed and how are you dealing with this . Well, let me tell you, first thing as i have said from Day One on this pandemic, ive been dealing with two wars. A day against covid and Human Stupidity because people are really making a lot of mistakes. We shouldnt be here where we are. Right now im seeing mostly younger people, people less than 50 years of age and just like you mentioned, over around 95 of them are unvaccinated. People dont want to do the right thing. If you come to texas, its life as usual, you know . You go to the mall, its packed with people and you go where you go, no mask rules. Thats whats going on. We know that the levels of covid even on our Waste Waters have gone up exponentially to levels that are worse than what they were last year. Our Waste Water Covid samples are around 350 as compared to july of last year. July of last year, the peak of covid before there were vaccines. Dr. Varon, our communities, the latino community and you are such a familiar face for noticias telemundo, you have been serving our community for so many years in such an amazing fashion, our community, the Latino Communities and the africanamerican communities, they are The Ones that you principally serve, why are you seeing so many people in our communities not vaccinated . I mean, if you were to just come with me and see what people tell me every day when they come in you wouldnt believe it. I have a 19yearold Guy that told me my dad didnt let me get vaccinated. A 23yearold Woman that told me, i didnt have time. I dont know what a 23yearold has to do that is so important that doesnt have time to get vaccinated, but you hear the usual things that we hear within the latin community that says youre going to end up being sterile if they give you the vaccine and things like that. Right now in the hospital about 80 of my patients are latinx and about 20 are africanamerican. Unfortunately, its the minorities, the communities of color that are suffering from this pandemic. Doctor, you are saying what about the ages . Are there younger patients than there were last year . The vast majority are younger. Last year we were seeing older people, but now were seeing the younger one and that may reflect that a lot of young people dont want to be vaccinated. I see that every single day. Its a fight that we have to do, but its not just the not wanting to be vaccinated, but not doing the right thing. We have mass gatherings, and a lot of things and last week in houston, we have a Soccer Game between mexico and canada, 65,000 people went there, and if you look at the people inside, almost nobody had a mask. So you know whats going to happen to my hospital in the next couple of weeks because people are going to be coming from there. How many how many beds do you have available and where do you reach the point where simply you just cant have any more patients . Well, we are basically at that stage right now. We are at the stage where for me to accept new patients i have to get patients out. We are at full capacity. We are trying to make additional beds. I mean, the hospital is struggling. Not only with a location, but also a good number of Health Care professionals have gotten sick and they have been ill with covid and we have nurses that are ill with covid, so you may have a bed, but you dont have staff to staff those beds and it is difficult because healthCare Providers dont like caring for patients with covid. They are concerned theyre going to get sick, and i dont i dont blame them for that, but we need all of the help we can get. Dr. Varon, when was the last time you had a vacation . Oh, gosh. You know a few weeks ago i was able to get my daughter married in cancun for, like, three days, but i worked 435 continuous days without a single day off and since i married my daughter i havent taken a single day off and that was almost a month and i know this will continue to go for a long period of time, because this is, as i told you, Deja Vu from last year. Dr. Varon, gracias. Thank you for being with me this morning. I so appreciate your time. That does it for me this hour. Im Jose Diazbalart in for craig melvin.
