Because of her music. The question is, how did she do it . Its Way Too Early for this. Good Morning And Welcome to Way Too Early, the show that was robbed of the bronze in the steeplechase. Im Jonathan Lemire on this thursday, august 5th. Lets start with the news. With coronavirus cases surging across the country thanks to the Delta Variant, dr. Anthony fauci is warning that an even more deadly strain could be possible. In an interview with mcclatchy, dr. Fauci says the virus has been given ample time to morph into a more dangerous variant. He said, quote, if another one comes along that has an equally high capability of transmitting but also is much more severe, then we could really be in trouble. Dr. Fauci also warned that covid cases are rising in a very steep fashion across the country and may double in the coming weeks to 200,000 a day. As the nation weighs travel restrictions, the biden administration is reportedly developing a plan that would require nearly all foreign visitors to be vaccinated before entering the United States. The plan first reported by reuter would be part of a new system. But officials have yet to determine when that might be done. According to reuters, the White House wants to reopen travel, which would boost business for the airlines and tourism industry, but White House officials said the nation is, quote, note ready to immediately lift restrictions because of the rise in the caseload and the covid variants. Meanwhile the Washington Post that some of floridas largest School Districts will either keep or irv new Mask Mandates due to the latest Covid Outbreak ravaging the state. The new challenge to Governor Ron Desantiss order is to withhold funds. According to the post, at least four districts are pushing back to the governors staunch position after he issued an Executive Order on friday. Broward county public schools, the sixth largest in the country, announced yesterday it will keep its Mask Mandate and await further guidance before rendering a decision on the Mask Mandate for the upcoming school year. Governor desantis gave a heated response after president biden criticized him and other governors for banning Mask Mandates. Joe biden has taken it upon himself to try to single out florida over covid. What is his big solution . What is he so upset about florida . His solution is he wants to have the Government Force kindergartners to wear masks in school. I can tell you in florida, the parents are going to be the ones in charge of that decision. So why dont you do your job. Why dont you get this border secure. And until you do that, i dont want to hear a blip about covid from you. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson says he regrets signing a ban on Mask Mandates back in april. I signed it at the time because our cases were at a very low point. I knew it would be overridden by the legislature if i didnt sign it. I signed it for those reasons, that our cases were at a low point. Everything has changed now. Yes, in hindsight, i wish that had not become law, but it is the law, and the only chance we have is to admit it or for the courts to say it has an unconstitutional foundation. The governor is now asking the State Legislature to reverse that decision so local School Districts can require masks when school resumes in a few weeks. The capitol continues to work slowly through the proposed amendments to the infrastructure plan. Senators hope to complete the process by this Evening Burke they say theyre not planning to rush through anything. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to delay the August Recess until its passed. The President Isnt likely to sign it for at least another six weeks. The house already left for its August Recess and is not scheduled to return until september 20th, and even when it does return, the bill is likely to face uphill Bat Tll as well. Joining us now, cofounder of punchbowl news, jake sherman. Thankfully hes an msnbc contributor. Well get to the bill in a minute, but lets start with the coronavirus. Weve heard from different governors. One governor regrets signinging a bill on a ban on Mask Mandates. Biden has really put the onus on the local governors to do as they see fit. What do you say . Whats your take right now on how the president s tougher new approach . Is it working . Well, i mean probably not. I dont think a lot of republican governors are going to listen when Joe Biden suggests they get out of the way or they somehow change their tact on Mask Mandates. Ill give you an example. Even in the capitol, we dont have a Mask Mandate at the moment on the Senate Side, which is controlled by democrats, which is very surprising. Republicans walk around without masks on the House Side even with the Mask Mandate. A lot of republicans have been walking around without masks leading the Capitol Police to say they will be arresting people if they dont put a mask on after police tell them to. So, again, this is like a yearlong push and pull, frankly, between science and politics, and its not getting any better. And asa hutchinson, whos a former member of congress himself, made a good point, which is basically he made these decisions when cases were low. Cases have spiked again. And he wishes he doesnt do it. I think thats an interesting insight into how politicians think. Jake, let me quickly follow up. Im surprised like you that the Senate Hasnt required Mask Mandates. We know its controlled by Mask Mandates. We know other senators were on that boat. They have testified negative. Why is that . Why is Senator Schumer not requiring masks on the Senate Side . I dont know the answer to that, to be honest with you. The senate is a little more buttoned up and, i guess, deferential, i would say, to individuals in the individual lawmakers, but i dont know the answer to that, although, i would say almost every democrat ive seen wears masks. Many republicans are wearing masks. Ive seen most republicans maybe not most but a good number of republicans wearing masks. Most are being responsible. The Press Corps is banding together and wearing masks. Most are protected. I think 99 or 100 of the senate are vaccinated and i think they think thats good enough. As you reviewed the functions of the Infrastructure Bill, what has stood out or any upcoming ones that could throw a wrench in the vote. Walk us through the timetable. Im going to take a twist on this, jon, and say none of them specifically stand out to me, but the timeline we kind of laid out at the Punch Bowl this morning is we assume there will be a Weekend Vote and it will come to final passage on Monday Morning based on our reporting. I will say what ive been asking of people at the capitol the last couple of days is what amendments do you need to close out debate on this . Ive asked it of republicans and Mitch Mcconnell yesterday. No one has an answer, which signals to me this was more about giving everybody a say in the process and moving to a final vote soon. But i just want to reiterate, and i think its important for viewers to understand this and important for washington. A lot of people dont understand this. This is not going to come to a vote in the house until like october. September, october, november. It could even be december. We dont assume that Nancy Pelosi has said time and time again this will come up when a reconciliation paage, this big build back better package that Joe Biden is pushing, comes to a vote. So people have to be patient. Were not only in an infrastructure summer, jon, but Infrastructure Fall and possibly winter, and i just think people should keep that in mind. Infrastructure year 2021. That includes the five named storms weve already seen this year. And now major hurricanes, three to five. Were going to be watching this pretty closely and also a wave coming off the african coast is starting to make its way offshore, and now the national Hurricane Center forecasting a 40 chance of development for this storm system. So were going to be watching that. Closer to home, we have this major Fire Danger across the pacific northwest. Things continue to heat up. And today dry Thunderstorm Activity across this area along with gusty winds Up To at least 40 miles per hour. Its the Desert Southwest. Were going to be watching pretty closely. 16 Million people will be impacted by heat warnings, heat advisories, and some sections of the country across Southern California to the Desert Southwest forecasting 120 to 125 degrees. Across the coast, its slightly cooler. Daytime high is going to be in the mid80s. Oakland today, 69 degrees, but this heat is continuing to push north and east, and its going to be a bigtime problem throughout the weekend where winds will continue to pick up and also Red Flag warnings. Theyre going to be watching this, jonathan. Unfortunately the heats going to build and then Hurricane Season is really going to start to pick up. 125 degrees. Janessa webb, thank you so much. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is facing several new inquiries. The embattled governor was facing federal charges after the attorney Generals Investigation alleged he sexually harassed women. The Washington Post reports those inquiries come off albany Countys District Attorney that their office is pursuing a criminal investigation of the governor. The Nassau County Governors Office has also asked for a probe, releasing in part, we have requested the attorney generals records related to any incidents that occurred in naus Saw County and will thoroughly and expeditiously investigate any potential crimes. While Governor Cuomo may be refusing to leave the governors mansion, he may have no choice. At least 86 of the 150 senators say they will remove him if he duh not resign. A speaker who would oversee a potential trial has called for the governor to resign and says he wants the assemblys investigation to be completed as quickly as possible. Meanwhile new York State democratic Chair Jake Jacobs is the latest to throw support behind the push for cuomo to resign. According to politico, jacobs has long been an ally of the governor and he said he called cuomo to let him know he would be calling for resignation. In a statement he said our state and its citizens are better off having had Andrew Cuomo as our governor. It is my hope that the legacy of the Progress Irv Change be brought to our people and the renewal of infrastructure be brought to our state will outshine the darkness of this sorry episode. Meanwhile the Trump Administration is reportedly under investigation again, this time over a missing Whiskey Bottle gifted to secretary mike pompeo. The State Department is trying to locate the whereabouts of a 5,800 bottle of japanese whiskey. The price has gone up, folks. The whiskey is marked as, quote, disposition unknown. Under u. S. Law a gift of that size becomes u. S. Property unless the district wants to buy it. Pompeo says he has no memory of receiving is that whiskey. That same report is shedding light on trump over pictures of himself. Trump received photographs or portraits of himself that reportedly were worth more than 10,000. That included an image of himself carved in stone gifted from an egyptian president. Still ahead, landlords are mounting a legal change in the cdcs latest Eviction Moratorium. A group of landlords and Real Estate Companies in atlanta, georgia, are suing biden over the Eviction Moratorium. They say the cdc is exceeding its power with the order, Something Biden was concerned might happen after a ruling that congress needed to take action. Nbc Correspondent Stephanie Rule ruhle has more. Reporter she fights eviction. Me and my son have been washing with cold water for over a month now. Reporter she says her landlord shut off her utilities and wants her out. The single mother lost her job during the pandemic and is among the 6. 9 million behind on rent. The Eviction Moratorium which extends until October 3rd helps keep her in her home. Reporter the cdc is asking to allow more time for the distribution and the biden administration is pushing for states to simplify their application process. Thank you, stephanie, for that. Meanwhile a loss has served as something of a reality check. Moderate democrats have won in New York, virginia, louisiana, and now ohio. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries of New York said in an interview with the New York times yesterday that democratic voters were clearly rejecting candidates from the most strident and ideological. In the posttrump era, the antiestablishment attack is lame when legislators are delivering good paying jobs, the fastest growing economy in 40 years, and a massive child tax cut. He goes on to tell the times, the majority recognizes trumpism and radical right is the real enemy, and not us. Apparently the extreme left hasnt figured that out. Joining us now, a reporter from the Washington Post, eugene scott. Good morning. Thank you for being here on set. Good morning. It is an interesting moment for progressives across the country. Lets take a minute and talk about that. As noted, theyve lost a string of elections from a variety of different states. We noted it was progressives in the house, Congresswoman Bush and members of the squad like warren and sanders. They scored a win. My colleagues and i pointed out they scored a blueprint that could work for them as they try to influence the Reconciliation Bill later this year. What do you make of this dynamic . Do they have more power in d. C. Than elsewhere . We know about the green new deal. When i was talking to voters in ohio, they credit some people on the far left with being responsible in part for Hillary Clintons loss of the state in 2016 and Joe Bidens loss of the state in 2020, and they have viewed some individuals like Mena Turner as too divisive to represent them and to send to washington. The reality is theres already enough fighting in washington right now if you talk to voters between those and the democratic party and the republican party and they do not want to elevate that by sending someone they believe would continue to attack establishment democrats or people that, you know, they believe are getting things done. Youve also had new reporting this week about Congressman Mo brooks and how hes seeking immunity from a lawsuit that started because he spoke at the Trump Rally on January 6th at that march that then became an insurrection. Tell us about tell us about your reporting. Well, one, i think one of the most startling things is Mo Brooks is representing himself, which we know is not advised among those in the legal community. I know enough from Law And Order that that did not go well. He said he spoke at that rally in his capacity as a congressman and, therefore, should be protected from a lawsuit because of that. But the reality is that rally was a campaign event, according to the justice department, and his responsibilities as a congressman did not involve him inciting an insurrection by encouraging people to believe that the 2020 election was not real and reliable. Gene, you say you were speaking to voters in ohio. What is your sense right now at this moment for the american electorate as covid suddenly races to the forefront again. Its become the dominant story. Were seeing the Mask Mandate change, debate about schools, obviously cases surging. Is there a sense right now with the people youre talking to that the biden administration is handling this well . Is the blame being put on the republican governors and the unvaccinated. Or is this the first time biden is going to take questions maybe about the leadership over the pandemic which to this point hes always received high poll marks. Ive seen frustration for the first time on the left over the biden administration and the masks. They believe they did what they did for the first goaround. But we didnt have the results the biden administration wanted, and it seems like everyone is being punished or being held responsible for this, and that is going to cause some tension between some of the people who have been supportive of the president in the long term and where they are now. I was speaking to an official just this week who acknowledged this is the first time under bidens watch the cases have gone up. As much as hes received a lot of credit, as the cases go up, hes going to take some of the blame. Eugene scott, thank you so much for being here. Adam neumann basically is expected to step down as we companys ceo. However, he would remain chairman of we company, according to the Wall Street journal. Its been two years since the downfall of wework. There were many troubles facing the company long before the departure of its ceo Adam Neumann in the fall of 2019. Joining us now, maureen farrell, the author of a new book. Maureen, thank you so much for being here. Were all thinking more about Work Spaces right now, right . Companies are having their workers come back to the office. Many are delaying it because a rise in the Delta Variant and people are rethinking whether they need to work at home or come into the office. This is something youve been thinking about for a long time, wework and the ceo. What are some of things youve learned while reporting for The Journal and writing your book, the whole concept . The concept is a really interesting one. Its an interesting moment as you said right now for this company, for the shared workspace company. People can big companies can move in and out and take as much or as little space as they want. The interesting thing about wework in the Adam Neumann era, the Largerthanlife Founder of the company who was pushed out in 2019, he always built it not as a realistic company. A lot of people have been to wework. Theyre beautiful Office Spaces, but theyre real estate. He was always billing it as a Tech Company and he was calling it an Artificial Intelligence company. And because of this, it ballooned to become the highest valued startup in the United States. Ultimately there was sort of an awakened and there were questions about his ability to lead the company. Theres No Doubt its a real Estate Company and Real Estate Companies are just not valued anywhere near tech companies, so thats sort of what led to the downfall of this company and the pulling of its ipo. Why do you think people and investors fell for him who promised so much and at the end of the day didnt deliver . First of all, he was a completely masterful salesman. You could walk into a room and he could convince anyone of anything, it would seem. These are some of the most sophisticated investors of the world, you has the massive arm of jpmorgan, Mutual Funds like others. We were always in this era there was so much private capital chasing the next facebook, the next google. So investors, it seems, were willing to buy what he was selling and the promise he could figure this all out and make this giant company. I mean at times he was talking about building a trilliondollar company, which at the time there was only one of in the world, apple. So it was sort of an amazing every step of the Way Story in this book to see all the Red Flags and the investors willing to overlook them. Where do we think on the concept . Is this someone if it wasnt Adam Neumann, maybe someone less charismatic but able to offer the goods . . Is this something that could still work . It could. Its incredibly interesting. In 2019 they called off their ipo. The valuation really shrunk from 47 Billion to 8 billion. But right now rework is poised to go public again. Theyre poised to do it through a spac vehicle. Theyre on track. It will be very interesting. Its too early to say, but they are potentially you could see companies getting rid of their headquarters or cutting down their Office Space and deciding to use wework instead. So its at sort of a critical moment right now whether or not it can really make it that and what do you think the legacy of nuemann and this company will be . Its an interesting question because in the months after this company fell apart and Adam Neumann pulled out, we saw investors looking at Red Flags and pay attention to them. At this moment now it seems like we have really swung back, and investors are embracing risks. Were not seeing anything of the size of wework, but were seeing a lot of risky companies come out there, especially in the public markets. So honestly its unclear right now. We hope from this book that people will take a look at these Red Flags, some of the work that people didnt do that kind of pushed back against a really a founder like Adam Neumann. There were Red Flags. There were things he was doing every step of the way. There was a board of directors, there were underwriters, people who could have stood up and pushed back against him and didnt. We hope the result of the legacy is people standing up what than they should. Its unclear right now whether or how soon this will happen. The new book is the cult of we. Its terrific. Everyone should pick up a company. Its fantastic. Congrats on the book. Thank you. Earlier we asked why are you awake. Inside an Sos Dinner for Kamala Harris, a group of women had a dinner to discuss what is the problem with the Vice President , what can they do from the outside to help her regain her footing . Theres a sense among senior democrats that she hasnt had a good tenure so this group of women is looking to see what they can do from the outside to perhaps build her reputation, help her get her footing. Something theyre talking about is building on her biography, an attorney general, successful senator, with not talk about that, get her on the road, speaking to voters and settle her into this role. The Vice President is an important position as far as the future of the party.
