Pattern of conduct by the governor of the great state of New York. And the surprising result from the Protest Movement to help americans avoid a housing disaster, i will talk to Senator Elizabeth Warren about the biden right initiations it reversal on the moratorium, went All In starts now. Good evening from New York, i am chris hayes. This may come as something of a surprise if you havent been following it closely but, remember the arizona republican Parties Election Audit that started way back in april . Remember that . It is somehow still going on nearly four months later. It has been paused for high school graduations. They shipped Voting System Data from a Santa Montana and used black lights to look for bamboo in the ballot because they thought it could be made in china. For context of the length of this enterprise, when the State Of Georgia said they would we count the votes in november, the count the length of the recount at just eight days. This arizona audit, in quotation marks, has passed 100. Days they are only auditing one county. Who the heck knows what they are doing . There is very little transparency, more and more republicans are losing their patience with the entire enterprise. Just yesterday, republican chairman of the Maricopa County Board of supervisors rejected a new subpoena from the state or senate. This is the republican State Senate calling the audit a Quote Adventure and never neverland. What is the point of this both cringe inducing serrated. Its a clown show. It looks ridiculous. It looks incompetent. Here are all sorts of republicans grumbling about it and sing it makes them looks bad and it is drawn out. There is no way to begin to trust anything that comes out of it from this openly pro Trump Company with apparently zero Expertise Or Experience that the new Yorkers Jane Mayer is also being funded by wealthy rightwing members. None of that matters. Thats not the point of what they are doing in arizona. The audit will produce some piece of information, some set of findings which dont have to be true. They likely will not be. That would then flow through the internet and then be repeated by rightwing media figures on podcast, twitter, Fox News. That will create an impression in peoples minds that there are problems here. I heard they found something. People would then site that in a way that Donald Trump told his acting Attorney General back in december last year. You guys may not be following the internet the way i do. That is has he tried to convince them to declare the 2020 election coughed. It is the same way that people cite the internet when are doing their own research on the vaccine. I read this thing about how it does this or that. That is the point of what we have come to call disinformation. Not information, it is disinformation. It releases false information into the atmosphere as a kind of potent, not even false. It might be more narrowly trooper just distracted. The putin mixes with other molecules in the air and it becomes harder for you to distinguish. While we breathe in the bad air in the good together, the disinformation doesnt have to be persuasive. It does not have to look competent or correct. Just look at what is going on in maricopa county. It just has to be out there. Thats it. Thats the point of the arizona audit. It is the latest in a long line of disinformation coming from the right, particularly Donald Trump. That is a man who understands the power of disinformation as well as anyone. It does not have to be approvable. In fact, its best if it is not. Its best if someone is just asking questions. If there is some kind of thing beyond the horizon that will reveal all but we never find which is a trump specialist. Im trying to find out, where is the Birth Certificate . Why did he spend millions of dollars on trying to stay away from this issue . Why doesnt he give his Birth Certificate . One happened to Hillary Clintons emails . 33,000 emails gone. Just gone. Russia, if you are listening, i hope you are able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. You have groups that are wondering why the fbi never took the server, havent they taken the server . I still ask the fbi, where is the server . How come the fbi never got the server from the dnc . Where is the server . I want to know wheres the server . And what is the server saying . What about the whistleblower . The whistleblower got it all wrong . Who is the whistleblower . Whos the whistleblower . Who is the whistleblower . We have to know. Where is the person who gave the whistleblower the information because, is that person this by . Or does that person even exist . The county asked for whatever reason, also asked to reduce the network routers. We want the routers. The networwhy are these Commisss Fighting not to get the routers . How simple could it be . Think of this, you had 205,000 more ballots than you had voters. That means you had where did they come from . Again, its all nonsense. What is the mean where are the routers, the servers, that this, that . It doesnt mean anything. It is nonsense. What is he talking about . It doesnt matter. The sheer volume of disinformation and confuse or make it difficult for people to see clearly but also give some things to talk about. Its moments of our view. That was with the Trump Campaign did in 2016, of course, very effectively with Hillary Clintons wikileaks emails. It would frame the Clinton Campaign and Donald Trump realized it was useful for him and he used it. That works so well in 2016 that trump trying to rerun the same thing for the 2020 election. We saw trump going to the insane, almost comically preposterous links to get the ukrainian president of all people, to announce he was opening an investigation into the bidens. It was never about the content, the actual facts of the matter of what happened, those who are completely immaterial from the beginning. Trump understood the powerful Disinformation Force that would be released through the atmosphere. That some guy, most people never heard of the president of the ukraine, and there was an investigation into President Biden. Have you seen theres an investigation into Hunter Biden, the corrupt Hunter Biden . I saw the investigation into him. Just a thing out there, who have to deal with it, the way Hillary Clintons sing emails are just floating out there. The way some piece of disinformation about the terrible things vaccines do due, now they just take up space in our social atmosphere. Totally false. Doesnt matter, just floating out there. Cant stuff it back from wherever it came. Trump understood and understands that. Thats why he went to these absurd lengths with his good group of clowns crawling over themself including Rudy Giuliani to try to get the ukrainian president to announce this investigation. When no one else was able to do it, trump himself put the screws to Vladimir Walensky and the infamous Phone Call that led to his impeachment. The president of ukraine told trump he wanted to buy more american weapons. They are waiting on the Weapons Trump said i would like you to do us a favor though. The favor was producing a piece of disinformation. That was the deliverable. Taking Care Of with the investigation, found it just once the investigation. Announce who are investigating. When that plan failed, trump stuck with the same stranded g. Constantly floating theories about Mail Fraud and voter fraud, and the big cities like philadelphia where there happens to be a lot of black voters. It will be rigged before the election. And then intensifying after. Are trying to be around the same play you run with the ukrainian government. Trying to rebrand it with the same acting Attorney General when he comes to him and says, as simply as you possibly can, just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the republican congressman. Again, just to produce the bit of disinformation i need for a meal. I need you to say it is corrupt. We will take Care Of the rest, because he understands the power of that disinformation. He just needs a little predicate. Just today, Abc News reports that a top department of Justice Official who was loyal to trump, actually drafted a letter saying the election was corrupt and was, thankfully, sharpton by a letter of superiors. The doj is investigating that was a lie, but can you imagine if the doj had released that publicly . How close we came. Just that idea released and into the atmosphere the bit of information. Ukraine is launching the truth doesnt matter in any of this. This is the staff emanating and polluting the atmosphere that we all breathe, the informational atmosphere and it is really quite literally undermining both american public health, an american democracy at the same time. The republican party, loyal to Donald Trump doing whatever they can to get official sounding institutions to Parent Trump lies, thats the entire goal of all this. It is wreaking unbelievable damage. It hasnt stopped. It will not stop and guess what, we are going to have more elections. As Greg Sergeant writes in his post in the Washington Post he says Greg Sergeant joins me now. Greg, there is sort of two parallel issues here. They are related, but there is the question of, did the institutions hold, right . You know, raffensperger robust trump, and Jeffrey Rosen the Attorney General blasts trump. Jeffrey clark, the guy who wrote that letter, the unbelievable letter that is a shameful piece of Work Product that should be tarred for the rest of his career and life, that guy, jeffrey clark, he field also, all right . The Legitimacy Problems is a deeper one. Thats what you write about. Thats where so much of this is doing it independent avoid institutional players to. I thought it was important that you connected the Ukraine Scandal directly to that coat that we just got from trump to the high Level Justice Department official and. In both those cases, all that was asked for was a mere announcement of kind of a smokescreen of doubt and uncertainty. That was the ask. It took us all a very long time to figure out that in the Ukraine Scandal, he never had any intention of actually finding anything. Although of course, if he had found one thing or another he couldve twisted into something, he would have used that. The announcement was the key. I thought it was a really telling Quote And Jane mayers piece. One of the lawyers for Trump Kind of cheerfully said to jane mayer, you know, i dont know if we will ever know who won georgia. The only solution is to have another election. It was a court like that. There it was in plain sight. The basic idea there was we cant really know who won, so we have to pick another route here. Thats really the game. Yes, precisely. Thats what makes the Arizona Enterprise so toxic and so disruptive as manifestly observed as it is. Has too much more republicans in the same state say this is ridiculous and has to stop, whatever it produces will then enter into some cannon among some portion of the population as either the truth, and another set of the population saying i dont know. Who is right on that, i cant remember. I think we need to know about this which is keeping the for the next spell. Whatever signal we are talking about, activists, some portion of the republican official himself or can remain persuaded and continue to say they remain persuaded when the outcome was dubious. Who will steal for much more Progressive Push next time. Its gonna be seen as a kind of Dry Run for them as well. Right before our eyes, were seeing numerous efforts to manufacture Test Runs and manufacturing uncertainty and about outcomes using whatever means are available. Whether to audit, investigation in georgia, right . Whether it was the thing that trump did asking the attorney to put out a statement saying that the outcome was corrupt. These are all tests, right . Next time we will see if we can avoid it. There are situations where we avoid the worst. Its highly possible that if its very close, they will come up with some sort of a new way to do it then we will see it. And electors. So i think all bets are off. Correct sergeant whos been following this very closely and writing about it so well, thank you so much. Thanks. I want to bring in someone you might be familiar with you, mike not heard from four oh while Lieutenant Colonel Alexander vindman. Author of the new book here, right math matters, which is an account of his life and his career and his decision to expose Donald Trumps abuse of power which led to the former president s first impeachment. Colonel vindman is good to have you here. You write about in the book this shock of hearing the brazenness of the ask on the Phone Call i want you to talk about what it was like to hear that and your contacts of understanding precisely what was happening in your moment when it happened. Sure, certainly in the book i explained a whole background before this call, this enterprising unfolding over the course of months. What was brazen and Beyond The Pale is the president s own direct hand being the Driving Force in seeking to undermine a free and fair election. Undermined the foundation of how our government has operated for more than 200 years, a peaceful transition of power, following free and fair election, that is what was brazen about it. The fact that the enterprise was unfolding with something that we were watching for many months. We thought that it was trump toadies, proxies seeking to ingratiate themselves, even up to mick mulvaney, the chief of staff. Its the president s own actions directly that alarmed me and necessitated that i take my concerns to other officials in the White House. So, did you have a view, i mean my sense from the book is that in some ways you couldnt quite bring yourself to believe that he would be the driver behind this, that this was opportunistic, people in his circle, and its in the moment of the Phone Call where you say oh, he is driving this. As an army officer, 21 years of service i have this reference for the office the reverence for the chain of command, and particular, i rationalize that it couldnt be that the president was behind this, this brazen act, this brazen assault on our democracy and really i couldnt deny it anymore, because it was staring right in front of me, and thats what makes the president such a powerful weapon for disinformation. Whether it is his own or the information he cares on behalf of other governments, that sympathetic with their interests, its because of the Office Of The President , its so revered, that its hard to fathom the president is the corrupt individual. So, did you understand, you talk about this information, did you understand the role, the ask, which was to produce a bit of disinformation had, why that was important and why that was the deliverable that he was obsessed with seeking . Sure. It was readily apparent to me that because i had done the digital additions and inquired, whether there was anything to substantiate the president s, at that point it wasnt the president s, but the president s men, their accusations into president , Vice President s bidens fight corruption. Having gone through that, the next question would be, why is the president pushing this and it was because, it was for dirty Tricks Campaign to undermine his most viable and potent in the election. He recognized that President Biden would be the person to defeat him, and he was looking for every way to hang Aung And Tarnish President Biden. He came really close to it. We were on the cusp of President Biden being tarred with this stain of corruption, and potentially not making it to the primaries, and the president running to another candidate who was more beatable and then we wouldve been subjected to four more years. One of the things i take away from your segment right before i came on is that its public servants that are doing their job thats going to be critical to keeping the ship on course, and the other thing is shining a light on fees lies and not letting somebody get away with just making some false accusations and moving on. Final question for you as you watched all of this play off, the runoff to the election, the post elections culminating in January 6th and the second impeachment, when you watch that, i dont know if you are watching the television on january six, but what was going through your mind as you watch that unfold . My first thought is what could i do to defend democracy, my first instinct was probably not the best instinct it was a counterprotest which wouldve fed into the president s plan and created more chaos and allow him to evoke the insurrection act. But my first thought is what could we do . And what i did is that i launched a campaign through the renewed Democracy Initiative about what democracy means to me, spoke about how we could bring the country together instead of separating us, and that is one of the messages i tried to communicate in my book, something positive, affirmative, how we can move forward. Its not an impeachment story it is about an american trying to do the right thing in the right way, using every tool in his background to try to do the right thing. Colonel Alexander Vindman whose new book here right matters and american stories out today. Thank you so much for your time. Thank you. Today President Biden had words for three different governors, none of them were good, ahead, why he told abbott and sentenced to get out of the Way Press his call for the resignation of Andrew Cuomo, big deal. Covid cases are rising get started today. Sharply across the country, more than 100 percent in 40 states plus d. C. Leaders are starting to take significant steps to try to curve the spread. In new York City Mayor Bill de blasio announced starting in september of people will need proof of vaccination for a number of indoor activities like working out at the gym or eating indoors. And in louisiana, which is the highest rate of covid in the world at present, governor John Bel edwards just ordered an indoor mask mandates. But in florida where cases have risen by more than 100 and 65 , and hospitalizations breaking records every Day Governor Ron Desantis continues to downplay the virus focusing instead on making sure schools dont require masks, in texas were cases and hospitalizations are surging Governor Greg Abbott is going on Fox News to complain about the biden administration s draconian safety precautions, while blocking local governments from instituting even basic steps like mask requirements. Today President Biden called out both governors to start taking covid seriously or get out of the way. Just two states, florida and texas, they account for one third of all new covid19 cases in the entire country, just two states. Look, we need leadership from everyone, and if some governors arent willing to do the right thing to be this pandemic, then they should allow businesses, universities who want to do the right thing to do it. I say to these governors please help, but if youre not going to help, at least get out of the way. People are trying to do the right thing. Use your power to save lives. Us it was a sharp rebuke from the sitting president clearly grown frustrated with republican when it comes to saving lives from people in their states. Those werent the harshest words he had today, he saved those for the democratic governor of New York, that is next. Rk, that i next when a Truck Hit my car, the Insurance Company Wasnt fair. I didnt know what my case was worth. So i called the Barnes Firm. I was hit by a car and needed help. I called the Barnes Firm, that was the best call i couldve made. Im rich barnes. Its hard for people to know how much their Accident Case is worth. Let our Injury Attorneys help you get the best result possible. Governor cuomo sexually the Barnes Firm Injury Attorneys call one eight hundred, Eight Million harassed multiple women. Many of whom were young women, by engaging in unwanted groping, kisses, hugging and by making inappropriate comments. I believe women, and i believe these 11 women. After five month long investigation the New York Attorney Generals office released a Damning Report Concluding that governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women in violation of federal in state laws. Nine of them are current or former employees, once a state trooper, and all told investigators about a toxic Working Environment that unable to govern nurse abuse. One aide says that when he said inappropriate thinks quote i wasnt comfortable, but i was also acutely aware that i did not want him to get mad. Another said i would say that that was his if he liked you toxicity. For most people, when youre around, you saw that if he hit you toxicity. The report also details efforts by the Governors Task to smear at least one of his accusers. Today in a prerecorded statement, Governor Cuomo denied he ever touched anyone inappropriately, and released photos of himself embracing and kissing other people to demonstrate that his behavior was unremarkable. Hours later, new York State Assembly Speaker announced quote it is abundantly clear to me that the governor has lost the confidence of the assembly democratic majority and that he can no longer remain in office. Once we receive all relevant documents and evidence from the Attorney General, we will move expeditiously and look to conclude our Impeachment Investigation as quickly as possible. Also the Albany County da asking for those documents as part of an ongoing criminal investigation with the governors conduct. Multiple democrats calling for Governor Cuomo to resign including Kristen Juul around and chuck schumer, Bill De Blasio and the president of the united states. Will you now call on him to resign given the investigator said the 11 women were credible . I stand by that statement. Are you now calling on him to resign . Yes. Ling rebecca traced to wrote about the abusive environment in Governor Cuomos office in the piece of new York Magazine back in march and she joins me now. Rebecca the president calling for him to resign which feels like a big moment giving how long cuomo has been able to tough it out and just keep going. It certainly does feel like a big moment although i will say having reported on these allegations as they were coming out, being recorded and other places in february in march, that also felt big. State democrats were calling on him to resign then. As you say, he took the very trumpian road simply saying no, i am denying everything and im staying in power, and he has stayed in power. So, yes, the pressure is going to be on. The Impeachment Inquiry is going to happen, but i dont know how it is going to end. So, i dont know if there is a way for the governor to defend himself that wouldnt feel objectionable because the substance of the accusations, but two things that he did today one, i do this with everybody and then pictures of Barack Obama or hugging hurricane victims, it felt like a strange defense. And the other was that, one of the women who thought i was making a pass at her thought that because she had experienced Sexual Assault or Sexual Harassment in the past. What did you think of those defenses . Well, his defense when it came to Charlotte Bennett who is the woman who came forward in the New York times in the spring with her story of his asking about her dating life, would she date older men s excuse, his story is i spoke to her in ways i wouldnt speak to most people and asked her question about her personal life because i was so anxious to help her, he said he wanted to help, he was concerned about her experience of having been sexually assaulted. I spoke to her in ways i havent spoken to other women. In fact this report and the reporting that i did in that others did in the spring, is right with him speaking to women about their dating lives in inappropriate ways. Women who worked with him. He asked them all their divorces, if theyve cheated, these are stories that have been told and in this report cooperated by multiple contemporaneous sources. He is lying. Lets be clear about that, hes lying when he says, oh, i did this in a way that i dont usually do with other people. There are lots of other people who are speaking on the record, and to the Attorney Generals office about his having spoken in those same ways to them. As for the stuff about, oh, look at all these people who kiss and hug, it is one of the most demeaning things. He traffics in diminishing. One of the most demeaning approaches he has here is a, i guess nobody can tell the difference between the type of hug that a politician gives to a hurricane victim, and that was genuinely some of the pictures he put out today or of politicians comforting people who had lost their homes, and Loved Ones and wrapping them in a hug as if that is the same thing as these multiple women who have worked for him, told investigators, as if that was remotely comparable, as of people who have been touch inappropriately, kissed inappropriately at work, kissed on the lips, inappropriately by their boss, the governor of new York Touch on the backs in the midsection, groped as one former Executive Assistant alleges he did to him. As if the people who are telling those stories, somehow, cant tell the difference between the political gesture of physical support, an arm around the shoulder, and by the way, i should also note, not all of those gestures are welcomed either, there is a way in which we have normalized Bodily Contact in public, that doesnt actually sit well with those who are touched by public figures or in professional settings. But, the very notion, that its just all of these accusers who cant tell the difference between this and regular political public behavior that is, its incredibly insulting that he would try to pass that off. Insultin yeah and if the audience, the people that hold the faith in his hands, it didnt seem to sit very well with them. Rebecca traister, thank you for joining us tonight. Thank you for having me. It took widespread Outrage And Congresswoman Cori Bush sleeping on the steps of the capital to get the White House to change course on the eviction moratorium, Senator Elizabeth Warren was part of the democrats want to support the protests on the Capitol Steps, she returned there today to congratulate Congresswoman Bush after the reversal from the White House she joins me to talk about it all ahead. Soft Music about this time last night i hello, Colonial Penn . Spoke with a member of Congress Congresswoman Cory bush who was sleeping out on the steps of the capital for the fourth night protesting Houses Failure to extend the federal moratorium on evictions. I know what its like to have to walk through every single piece of what happens when an eviction is possible in your life and what happens when you are actually evicted. And what that does to you emotionally, physically, mentally, what it does to your family, it is actual violence on a person. I dont wish that on anyone. Today, we got word that congresswoman pushes protests appears to have worth, the centers of Disease Control and prevention issued a new federal moratorium on evictions in areas that have been hit hard by the delta variant. The order will remain in place until october. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren of massachusetts have been championing this cause along with her colleague Cory Bush joining her on the Capitol Steps to demand more trumpy extended and Senator Warren joins me now. There was a lot of back and forth among folks about the legality here. People said look, the cdc issued this it had been challenged in court, the supreme let it go, it was going to expire, the White House said, we dont have the legal authority, now you get the pronouncement by the cdc, is this not a shaky legal ground in your view . I dont think so. Were in the middle of a pandemic. The cdc has narrowed somewhat the eviction moratorium, and focused it on places where the threat from covid is the greatest. And i think that is exactly what the cdc is supposed to do. I think their own sound, legal ground. Do you, how do you understand what happened here . It seems to me to be a strange moment. Everyones known that the deadline and then a few days before then the White House said we need statutory authority, we need congress to handle it because i dont think would have the legal authority and then Congress Couldnt do it in time of the at the protest and i have the reversal, was this just didnt fall through the cracks . How did this end up here . It is always possible, in a big administration, that there are lawyers who get a hold of things and i say that with all difference to lawyers, who worry about that piece, and what happened the last time we were in court, and they sometimes use that as a way to back folks off of doing what we all know is the right thing to do. Remember the larger context. Congress had already passed a law giving the tools to the states in order to stop and eviction crisis. Wed already allocated 43 Billion Dollars and states just hadnt gotten their acts together into many places and had only pushed out about Three Billion of that. So this is a case where it was a crisis that was on folding in on necessary. In the way i see it is when Cori Bush said wait a minute i know with this is like, she spoke from the heart, and she rallied people all across this nation. She said this is an important moment. People started pushing back and set in the middle of a pandemic, were not gonna throw families out on The Street, were not gonna tell people to get out and Couch Surf and double up with relatives. Its the wrong thing to do. Were gonna take a little more time and spend the money that congress has already allocated to protect the landlords and protect the tenants. I think we saw happen is power to the people on this one. Okay, so what you said is so important, i want to hammer this on. I have got an email, of thoughtful email from a viewer last night who is a landlord, and said look, i dont want to put anyone out on The Street in a pandemic, actually think that they should renew the moratorium, but, its untenable situation, there are a lot of landlords that are extremely wealthy and can manage it, but for some of them they cant. I wrote back i said yes, youre in luck, this is the craziest thing about this entire situation, there is 45 Billion dollars, its been authorized by congress its been signed by the president of the united states, it is there and the states, they distributed 12 of the first 25 Billions and funds, and so now we have to look october, how are we going to make sure that this money gets out there so that we can actually get to the root of the issue here . So now were down to fighting state by state. When congress set this up, they tried to maximize flexibility to each of the states saying you know your states best, you know where the problems are, were gonna make sure that Theres Plenty of money here, now states Set Something up to make sure that people dont get put out on The Street and to make sure that small landlords are fully taken Care Of. That is the idea behind it, some states stepped up and a lot of states didnt. So where our attention needs to go now is to each of us to our own states, and say to the states, you have the money, make sure the money is being used to keep people in their homes, to make sure landlords, small landlords dont Get Hurt and to make sure the tenants dont Get Hurt either. When you have the tools and you have the money, you would think we could get to the solution. I mean, this is the Big Question now, and theres another legal challenge, we dont know whats going to happen. The clock is ticking. I hope that we can rectify the, Senator Elizabeth Warren, so good to talk to you, thank you so much. You bet. There is an incredible new Barack Obama documentary about To Trump On Hbo In The Movies Executive Producer is a guy by the name of Jelani Cobb and hes here with the special sneak preview, next. Documentary about President Obama debuts on hbo, obama in pursuit of a more perfect union, it examines how Everything Obama did from winning the presidency from how he governs was all seen through the prism of race. The day he was inaugurated, i walked up to him and asked him to sign something, he wrote on this piece of paper, its all because of you, john. I said thank you mister president. He gave me a hug, i hugged him, and we both teared up. Now you have a Black Man in that White House building, primarily built by black slaves, that is a moment that i think all of us felt very deeply. I will never forget that as long as i live. Basketball players and rappers that was the range in which black men existed in a Pop Culture for the most part, that was it. And so it was really something beautiful about seeing something else. This was one showing how much we more american could we get than this one. Jelani cobb as one of the Executive Producers of the documentary, it debuts tonight on Hbo And Hbo max and he joins me now. Jelani, as i watch that footage, i thought to myself about the arc of the story of the Obama Presidency between that moment, 12 years ago, him walking down to be inaugurated and now. And how that informed the project, as you guys undertook this. Yeah, we have this sense now, with all the bedlam that has become a daily part of our lives in terms of politics, that theres a connection between obama and his presidency, but the thing is, watching this documentary and working on this documentary over the course of the years has really cemented the 1 to 1 correlation. You can almost begin to see, you know, the craziness taking form, from one section to the next section, to the next section. I think that was the more notable things that we got out of making this film. Explain what you mean by that. So, when you look at, for instance, these conversations about whether or not the 2020 election was legitimate, whether Joe Biden actually won the presidency and so on, we can almost overlook the fact that this is the second consecutive democratic administration in which is plurality of republicans believe that the occupant of the White House is there legitimately, and that began of course Donald Trump was responsible for that on both ends, the Connective Tissue between those two theories. And it started with birtherism, and when you see the initial Fear Ray of the Tea Party Movement and that reaction to the affordable care act, and its not really hard to believe that they would storm the capital on January 6th. And so, its just time after time, youre looking at this footage, and this is recent history, but time after time you just see the fingerprints of the past emerging right into the president. Theres also, you talk a lot about in the documentary, i want to play this clip of him talking about the boys and the sort of Double Consciousness that he talked about and how inescapable that was in the Obama Presidency and Barack Obama himself. Take a listen. A hims w. E. B. Duboiss and f the classics of the black traditions defined the Double Consciousness of every african american. He said one ever feels his tunis in american and negro, two warring ideals in one dark body. It never has been a more classic example of the Boiss Dilemma than Barack Obama in the White House. As i was watching that, i said this, that tunis is the source of so much of the or more global scale that characterizes that presidency and that was so powerful and profound that it was able to make you lose sight of how much anger was Fermenting Underneath that. Yeah, in the ideal obama, he was trying to reconcile those two things that him and Louis Gates were talking about, the idea of being black and being american, these things are not necessarily warring ideals. Its a lofty aspiration. That is what the 2004 democratic Convention Speech was supposed to be, an attempt to cement those things. We ended with a white Supremacist Presidency following obama with a revitalized would nationalist movements white nationalist movements, and thats not to say its a Sum Total of his legacy, but we saw the way those two things played out in the course of his presidency and the dynamic that was really a microcosm of american history. Look at Obamas Presidency and that is what we see. Quickly, finally, what surprised you most, what did you really learn that you forgotten or discovered . You know, the interesting thing about it is seeing just how much of the character of obama was formed, and who the person was, who entered the White House, and you can see time and time again, and this is the Way History works. When he becomes president of the harvard law review, and various expenses in his life, that is essentially the guy that is in the White House. Its a series of trial runs before he winds up in 1600 pennsylvania avenue, i think it was fascinating to see that unfold. Yeah, i agree about that, the interviews where he becomes president , the continuity, the presence that is there at that moment is uncanny, Jelani Cobb, one of the Executive Producers of obama in pursuit of a more perfect union, debuts on hbo hbo max, thanks so much for making time, jelani, Cant Wait to have people watch.
