The cdc now recommended they get tested after exposure with someone with covid even though they dont show symptoms. The cdc says that the vaccinated people did not have to get tested unless they did experience symptoms. The Washington Post is covid surge on the White House writing, quote, this landscape, and some say, the administrations less than clear messaging, is complicating bidens efforts to show that hes still leading the united states out of the pandemic, his presidency central promise. Some republicans are speaking out, slamming what they say are shifting messages, especially about masks for fully vaccinated. Its confusing, theyre sending mixed messages constantly. Its contradictory, i think it sets us back and what were trying to do, were encouraging people to get vaccinated. Theyre not really forthcoming on a lot of data that theyre using to make this change in the guidance. On capitol hill, republican Congressman Chip Roy of texas lashed out after a Mask Mandate was reimposed for the house of representatives. Which is . It vaccines or masks . If the vaccines work or they dont work. Do the masks work so they dont work . I would like to know which it is. Are they just gonna go around poking people saying you must take a vaccine. Masks are back, theres a lot of talk of mandates, although that is not a word that we will hear the White House use, its something thats happening in a lot of private companies, and some local jurisdictions like New York, and i think there is some frustration among The American public. Certainly thats a frustration that the republicans are trying to stoke. Theres a sense that this country is not continuing its upper trajectory out of the virus. Is this the white Houses Fault . Not necessarily, this is how pandemics can go. Particularly when Vaccination Rates have been gotten as high as the White House would like them to be and we know that a large percentage of the vaccinated people there so the White House doesnt carry the same sort of wait, potentially convincing those voters as they do with other voters. But its not the position they want to be. Ian and i think theres some concern among allies of the White House that there could be some Backlash Or Frustration among voters that biden can deliver on the central premise of his campaign, which is to move the country out of this pandemic. Right and its reopening, so these old wounds, the House Speaker in the Minority Leader openly sniping about the mask guidance. Kevin mccarthy tweeted this last, night make no mistake the threat of bringing bass must bad is not a decision based on, science but a decision contradict by liberal Government Officials who want to continue to live in a perpetual pandemic state. So then today, Speaker Pelosi and mccarthy had this back and forth. The Mask Mandate, Speaker Pelosi, any response to the backlash . We thats the purview of the capitol physician, the official capacity, a mandate for him. I have nothing to say about that its except we honor. It i have my mask. Leader mccarthy says its against the science. Hes such a moron. Lets talk about the science, we are vaccinated, we are not a hot spot, but theyre forcing you to wear a mask . Not in the senate, but In The House. This is just about more control. Phil rock, or does it seem like we are even more at risk now than say year ago of allowing the politics of all of this to keep us from actually doing what needs to get done to stop the spread . How ugly is this going to get . Well chris, its already pretty ugly as in the video just showed makes clear. And this is a very political issue right now. The covid response, and especially at the issue of whether to require people to wear masks, has been political from Day One because President Trump last year when he was in office made it political. And of course try to convince his supporters that they didnt have to wear masks. And now you fast forward to the moment where in right now, and the data are very clear. The data showed that one of the reasons why we are seeing the surge in Covid Infections because so many people in republican leading states have been reluctant and resistant to getting the vaccine. Thats according to the cdc officials and to the data that theyre analyzing. So the biden administration, as well as state and local jurisdictions around the country, are grappling with how to deal with this outbreak of Covid Infections and how to keep people safe. If The American if all The American citizens are not going out and getting vaccinated, which is the reality were in right now. And its going to be a political football i think from for these politicians. And we should also keep in mind that one of the reasons why pelosi is so adamant about these restrictions inside the houses because so many of those House Members are coming to washington from their districts those districts are hotspots, many of them are, and some of those House Members have been reluctant and resistant to follow the guidelines in their own communities and when theyre convening in the congress with so many people who are at an advanced age, it certainly brings a risk to the lawmakers and elected officials. There a ris and lisa, the president s going to make his coronavirus mandate announcement, but today he was pushing infrastructure in pennsylvania. What is todays vote on the Infrastructure Bill for Joe Biden in this White House . The White House is holding it as a big victory, this was something that president biden talked a lot about it on his campaign trail. His ability to bring people together in congress and passed some kind of bipartisan legislation, and sort of remind people of how things used to be back when he was in senate. Members in congress where sometimes, occasionally, or out, all able to work together in past things. There is still a long way to go, hes going to have to keep his caucus in line and keep them on board. A lot of them were hoping this bipartisan bill would be bigger, they want to be sure that the things they want to scene this bill, that are not in, theyre getting that Reconciliation Package. But the party are concerned that the Reconciliation Package could be too large. So there is a law that hes gonna to do in his own party, particularly In The House where he cannot lose that many democrats. And of course this is not the final vote at all on this package. Theres a long road to go with keeping these ten republicans on board as well. But i think tonight, at least, the White House is feeling pretty good. Doctor patel, while theyre moving for the white House Perspective on the infrastructure, not so much on the surge. How concerned are you about where we are, and while the vaccinated wait on the unvaccinated to get their shots, is one part of the answer what pfizer is now saying, getting a third dose of the Covid Vaccine can strongly protect against the Delta Variant . To that point, pfizer had some data that they released not the full data suggesting that their dose could really amplify the immunity that people who have had doses this is a good talking point, but to be candid, not the whole country got pfizer. You have, as you mentioned, a White House that is trying to literally put one thought foot on the dock and the other on the boat and another foot somewhere else, so its incredibly complex. One thing ive seen is that the Cdcs Messaging has been trying to communicate nuance, High Transmission, wearing a mask in certain situations, k through 12. We have seen again, we cant do nuance. We are all very reacting from this very emotional base. This is where we are all now. All of us who are vaccinated are waiting on the unvaccinated. And chris, whatever, seen youve seen it, to its getting kind of ugly. Vaccinated people, including myself at times, where angry at whats happening. And Thats Everything that is playing out in our communities and nationally. And internationally. So i hope that we can get this communication simpler. I hope we can remind people that wearing masks is not a lack of confidence in vaccines but its what we have to do to drive down these cases. Its simple. Until we can get the rest of the country vaccinated and then work on the rest of the world, dont lose sight. This isnt over, until we can get the majority of the globe vaccinated. And to point, out as we always, have this is no longer an access issue. This is no longer us getting on the phone for four hours hoping to get an appointment. So there are these questions that have been raised by what is happening in great britain, because that country was a mess and now the Washington Post reports that maybe britain has reached an immunity threshold. More than 70 of adults here are fully vaccinated, but 88 have had a freeze dose. One of the best Vaccine Uptake in the world. So im wondering, as you look at the numbers from the uk if Theres Something we can do learning from them . Yes chris, we can always. Learn look, one note of when the uk decided to do that for his dose and delaying the for second dose, and number of people, including myself, were concerned and critical of that approach because we knew that we had the vaccines to get them the second dose at the appointed time. Theres something about that one dose that gave him this opportunity to have a huge amount of uptake. But chris, honestly, they also went through their struggles with delta, with alpha, and had it just weeks before us. And what they did do was pretty restrictive. They actually restricted movement, they did a lot of things that i think we are right now not even close to doing. Limiting indoor capacity. So you have to take into consideration that, yes, we can learn from them is that if you can get a first dose on as many people of as possible, it creates some wall of immunity, but its not everything. And to your point, you really have to have two doses. And yet to ask, theres a difference between a country that can have a national Health System and a better way of monitoring people who are vaccinated. Its more of a centralized way of trying to understand where your gaps are. We dont have that in the united states and we might be seeing the repercussions of it. So as politics continues to go over everything thats happening with covid, phil rock, or your colleagues at the Post Report that Donald Trump relentlessly pressured his acting Attorney General rosen, he called him almost daily according to the reporting, about investigating those false 2020 Election Fraud claims. And i quote from the story, the personal Pressure Campaign, which has not been previously reported, involved repeated Phone Calls, in which trump raised various allegations he had heard about and asked what the Justice Department is doing about the issue. There are notes of some of the calls that were written by a top aide of rosen, richard donahue, the notes could be turned over to congress in the number of days. The Phone Calls came in late 2020 and early 2021 when trump and his supporters were furiously pressing for officials at all levels of government to intercede in the usually routine process of certifying the election results. So phil, you cover those final weeks in your book. What was going on in the administration and do you expect these notes to end up in the hands of the January 6th commission . Well, chris, i think its very telling that these notes exist and that they could end up in congress in the coming days. I think thats important and we should keep an eye on that. But in terms of the broader context here, ever since the November 3rd election, trump was pressuring bill barr, the Attorney General, to do just what you described with rosen. Calling him every day and pestering him about whatever conspiracies he heard from rudy giuliani, or from sydney powell, the lawyer, or from mike lindell, the pillow guy, or on fox news. Anything that you heard that could lead to some evidence that would overturn the election, he wanted his Attorney General investigating it. And it reached a point at the beginning of december where barr had had enough and he told trump, and told sets to the public actually, that there was no evidence of enough fraud to overturn the election. Barr ended up resigning from office in mid december, and Jeffrey Rosen succeeded him as acting Attorney General. And a new information that my colleagues are reporting tonight is that trump continued that Pressure Campaign almost immediately with rosen and it was a daily series of pressured tactics. Phone calls, and other outreach from trump and other people at the White House up until Joe Biden got in not rated as president. Hospitalizations also have been climbing since reaching a recent low of 209 on june 12th. And i know doctor, thank you for being with us tonight, you are wearing your mask. Describe what is going on in nevada and what kind of patients youre seeing . Unfortunately we have seen a significant increase and the cases. We are labeled as one of those committed communities with High Transmission by the cdc. Its a the low amount of unvaccinated the people that we have in the state, and adding to that the Tourism Aspect of it. The Decrease And Maskwearing mandates in the businesses and overall increased exposure. That is what is driving the current surge. And is it going to get worse before it gets better . Do you foresee the spike in hospitalizations continuing . You said something that i had not heard from anybody before, you said if you arent vaccinated, getting covid is inevitable. It should scare people. We so im not trying to scare people, its just a matter of time. Its the statistics. If you are in a vulnerable state and you have an increased weight of transmission of a highly infectious disease, chances are you will get infected at some point. So now we have the ability to prevent these infections, even if you get a Breakthrough Case of covid, the vaccines prevent you from getting hospitalized and the prevent you from dying. So its a marked improvement as it was from last year. And it allows us to remind people that you have the ability to do something about it. Last year, we were helpless. Now, we have this force that we did have before. So you have the tools, so what are unvaccinated patients telling you . Why arent they getting the shot . Its a large spectrum. Of reasons. Some of them come out of fear, some out of distressed. But i think we need to meet people where they are. They need to spend the time to talk to them and explain where their hesitance is coming from. And be able to point them to sources of information. And i have seen success in having patients then become vaccinated after that. I know you dont want people to get vaccinated out of fear, although it can be a powerful tool, and i wonder if where you are, as far as you can tell, has the Delta Variant helped at all to convince people more people to get their covid shots . Weve salute lay this new variant is much more infectious than the previous one and this is just the result of an evolution of virus. The Viruses Mission is to survive and it finds ways around the roadblocks that we place for. It so people see the death toll, people see the burden of disease, and then i try to convince them that getting vaccinated is a matter of love, not just for your personal life but for those that you care for. So taking care of yourself, preventing infections of yourself, youre also protecting your loved ones. So you are gonna fall under the indoor Mask Mandate imposed by the state, are you worried that folks wont wear a mask anyway and you kind of touched on this at the top, but you have a unique situation with Las Vegas where there are huge numbers of people coming from elsewhere. We it is an inconvenience for people, and i can understand how back peddling into the previous guidance can make people distrust. But remember, it doesnt change science doesnt change, its the new knowledge that science gives you. It teaches us to be humble. What we think we know with what we actually know when you apply science and give it enough time. So its a minor burden, there are been some studies published out of with 5000 people, all of them are tested, all of them were massed, and there was minimal transmission of the disease. We want to keep our businesses open. This is the lifeblood of the states economy. We need your help, we need your help to keep that going. It does feel like deja vu all over again, not just where you are but unfortunately it so many places around the country. How are you doing, how are the doctors and nurses and everybody who works at University Medical Center doing as they continue to see this upswing, this surge going on . We its very difficult. People hear about burnout we, one of the doctors that i admired with, he calls it moral injury. And its essentially your inability to be able to do good for your patient. This disease is something that we havent been able to conquer. The best fight is the one that you choose not to get into. The third option, leaders in this country are supposed to confront their constituents when their constituents are involved in a mistake of facts, or conspiracy theory. What republicans have done now, for a couple of years, is reflect back to instead of leading in telling confronting with truth, they have reflected back of the same Conspiracy Theories and facts set It Led to this massive problem. When leader should do, they should be telling their constituents the truth as opposed to accepting the crazy Conspiracy Theories and lies they arent traveling in. The question then is, did they listen to them . What did they do . I was in arkansas they were giving away big screen tvs. They still couldnt get the High School kids to come in in any real numbers. Theyre actually where more than a few people have suggested that if it was a requirement in football crazy places like texas, arkansas, where Vaccination Rates are, no youve got to get vaccinated to see your kid play. A lot of employers are putting in mandates for their employees to get vaccinated. We are going to have to have a mandate for federal workers to either get vaccinated, or contest it, apparently. I have seen reports and mandates for military for everybody to get vaccinated. Everybody to get vac i think, if you want to go to an alabama football game, and you should see what the tailgating us like there. It is a huge party. It is a lot of fun. If you want to do that, you should have to be vaccinated. That would probably work and have a big impact on the lowest in the nation vaccinated nation, alabama. Many people are saying, we were told if you want to get rid of the that masks get vaccinated. Now the thing is if you are vaccinated you have to wear a mask. When i hear that, its like the guy that points a gun at his own head and says you better stop doing that or i will shoot. Thats basically what theyre doing in this, theyre endangering their own lives and their friends lives in this. I think this amazing situation we are, and you cant adopt policy has facts change on the ground changes. If the battlefield changes and the environment, you have to change a plan and adapt. And that is what we are in. We are in a public Health War in the midst of this. The other thing about mandates, i think of it as being in a passenger liner. You read about details of passenger liners. Sometimes people on passenger liners, it might sink, people freak out. What happens a lot, people are told to put on a life preserver, sometimes theyre physically put in a lifeboat. Not only to protect the individual person, but to protect the other passengers that may be interfered within this. Thats the situation we are in. We have to insist people wear a life preserver, a mask, and insist they get a vaccine. A lifeboat. Other words, theyre not another the knot protecting anybody, they are endangering every community in our country. At some point, a common good is more important than the eye that people seem to be focused on.
