There was No Doubt that the the ioc did not require athletes to be fully vaccinated against covid. Just today, the doctor for Team Usa estimated that 83 of the competitors were fully vaccinated. Thats still a lot better than our country as a whole. Over half the nation remains unvaccinated. The cdc says that today saw the lowest number of shots given since early january. That, plus the super contagious Delta Variant continue to drive this surge in new covid cases. The cdc Data Show that the sevenday average of new cases is now the highest its been since the beginning of may. As weve been told, this is now largely a pandemic of the unvaccinated this time around. Anger and frustration at those who have not yet gotten the shot, is growing. As we mentioned, at the top of this broadcast, earlier today the republican governor of alabama, the state with the nations lowest Vaccination Rate, called out those who are still holding out. Folks are folks are supposed to supposed to have common have common sense. Sense. But its time for them to by this time to start blaming the start blaming the unvaccinated unvaccinated folks, not the folks. Regular folks. Its its the the unvaccinated folks unvaccinated folks that are that are letting us down. Leading this i have done thing. All i know how to do. I can encourage you to do something but i cannot make you take care of yourself. There was, meanwhile, the mayor of New York calling on companies to require their workers to get vaccinated. A new Ap Poll found that 45 of americans surveyed say they will definitely not get a shot. 35 say they White House maintains that it has no intention getting behind any mandates or requirements, they will stay the course trying to convince people to get one of the three vaccines that are available. We always knew it will be horrid harder as people get vaccinated. We have to stay added to save peoples lives. Now the government has also purchased an additional 200 Million doses of the pfizer vaccine. It will be delivered from october through april next year. In fact, just tonight the New York times is out with a story that the biden Administration Health officials increasingly believe, as is the case with other vaccines, many of us will in fact need Booster Shots as expected. Times says senior officials say american 65 an older, or americans with compromised immune systems, will most likely need that third shot from pfizer or moderna. There was a victory of Sorts Tonight for floridas governor, with the number of new cases a stock soaring, we they blocked cdc restrictions that caused a lot of prevented Cruise Ships from docking and florida. The cdc rules that it was meant to prove overly burdensome, just today, the state reported over 13,000 new covid cases. That is in one day. There is an update and another story that weve been following this week as well, tom barrack, the former trump inaugural chairman, charged with illegally lobbying the Trump Administration on behalf of the united arab emirates. He is out of jail on 215 Million dollar fail. He was released today pending trial. His passport was seized from him, hes been ordered to wear a Gps Location Monitoring bracelet. Hes doing federal court in new York City for his hearing on monday. And President Biden knocked back on the Campaign Trail for the first time since his inauguration over six months ago. He was in a rally to support Terry Mcauliffe who is running for another term in virginia state. The event was also seen as something as a test of Bidens Strength in the all important suburban voters ahead of the 2022 midterms. Its a lot, and with that lets bring on our lead off guests on this Last Night of the week, jon lemire, Susan Page Wetter in generous and bestselling author and the biographer of speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Cynthia Alksne, form federal prosecutor in the civil Rights Division of the Justice Department. What susan, with all of the progress we made on this virus, watching our country now takes such a big step backwards, what a test for this, or any presidency. We of course, for Joe Biden the success of his now depends on convincing voters who didnt vote for him, who dont trust him, to go ahead and take this vaccine that they have been so resistant to. The Flu Mixing Right . Weve managed to get vaccines that work, that are safe and are effective. And now theyre tasked turns out to be more difficult than the White House imagined. To convince the resistance to go and get them. It did not reach his goal of 70 of Vaccination Rate right now and that is a disappointment. Its hard to do other things unless, and until, this pandemic is under better control. Jonathan lynn here, i dont have to remind, you governors rarely act as a Pack And Party lines, but they do Sit Up and pay attention. And they watch the actions of one another, and Governor Ivy in alabama may have started something. Tell us how resistant the White House remains on any kind of Vaccine Requirements . It was striking words from the Governor Today about the terrible Vaccination Rate in her state, and talked about in very candid terms about people who are not get the vaccine were delivering five suffering to themselves and potentially to their loved ones. The White House at this point still shining away from the vaccine passports and things like that. They are, every day, trying to come up with ways to encourage americans to take the vaccine, not only are they right now at risk of contracting the highly contagious Delta Variant, but the way the more chance there can be a further variant that couldnt be more able to dodge the protection offered by the vaccine. But right now, theres been discussions this week, as my colleagues and others have reported, about masks. Whether the cdc is one requesting masks for individuals. Theyre having chickens about it. And certainly yes, the surge in the virus and dangers what the president is doing right now. Its affecting his economic recovery, its endangering his cynthia, lets merge your lifes work in law and the topic of Public Health. It was fauci who said just a few days ago, if we had had this kind of anti Vaccine Campaign during the fight against polio, smallpox, we may still have been dealing with those diseases today. Who knows, we might yet. What are the legal rules and ramifications surrounding requirements to get vaccinated. Say you want to attend a public event, a private event, say your own private company wants to require . It while the eoc said that your private company can require. And as long as they make some sort of arrangement if you have a Health Condition or if you have a religious objection. Private companies can do. It i was thinking about this today, there really isnt an analogous situation with smoking, which turned out to be interesting, but to states, and insurance companies, for example, in texas, the texas Public Health system, theres a surcharge if you smoke. Its 30 Bucks a month. Kaiser, its the 20 Bucks a month. And it might be that we need these things. The government may have to say you cannot get on the plane unless you are vaccinated. It may be that your employers are going to have to require vaccinations, and maybe that youre gonna have to pay more for insurance if you refused to get vaccinated. Because its costing us all a lot of money, these people who are refusing to follow the science. And who are ended up 20 days on the respirator and then were all paying for it. Or any other terrible thing that happens to them, including spreading the disease to other innocent people. So i think its a multi layered approach, but there are ways to Carrot And Stick and try to up the Vaccination Rate in the country. It sure is tied up in president ial politics to us sometimes fatal degree. Susan, i want to read you david from from the atlantic, and here, he gets a Big One right. He writes, in part, experts list many reasons for the vaccine slump, but one big reason stands out, Vaccine Resistance among conservative, evangelical, and rural americans. Pro Trump America has decided that Vaccine Refusal is a State Statement of identity and a test of loyalty. As Cases Uptick again, as people who have done the right thing face the consequences of other people doing the wrong thing, the question occurs does bidens america have a Breaking Point . And susan, another way to ask that is, are we destined to become more two nations then it already seems we are most days . I hope not. Although, i wouldve been surprised at the beginning of this pandemic with the idea that wearing a mask would become a partisan issue on which they would be a big partisan divide. It seems we talk about ways to encourage, to carrots and sticks, people who are reluctant to get vaccines to do so. How about the fact that you are more likely to die, get sick, go to the hospital, if you dont get a vaccine. It seems like that is a pretty good stick, and yet its not working because, i think of the Rhetoric Weve seen, from president trump, from some of his acolytes, from conservative media figures, that to pick this as a matter of liberty not a matter of life, brian. Jonathan, bit of a change of subject, Id Love you to give us a preview of next week specifically on tuesday, and specifically the start of the one six committee hearings. Well thats why, brian. Theres a lot we dont know about how this is going to play out. Of course, just this week, Gop Leader mccarthy nominated several republicans, five republicans to a select committee. Three of them voted against certifying Joe Bidens election. That took place after the riots that day. So we know House Speaker Pelosi objected to two of them. She suggested that they might be called as witnesses to the committee so i would not be appropriate if there were also to serve as members. Which caused mccarthy to pull them all out. So now the republicans, at least now for the moment, is this genie, and perhaps kinzinger, who is also anti trump, might be added. So it will start tuesday, the question is will we have one or two committees. Well the republicans have their own working group, it will be the official committee. But they might produce their own report with their own findings, which could be created to diminish, and quite a fog machine, and overshadowed whats Nancy Pelosi will discover and publish. We can also the bipartisan commission was the original intent. For we because of that, because the undermined that cause, look at what we have now. Which is potentially now dueling fine groups, probably the same thing, with just more messy politics, undoubtedly upsetting americans and undermining their confidence in the government that is meant to represent. Them cynthia, you get the last word, lets talk about the curious case of mr. Barrack. A quarter of A Billion dollars, no matter which way you slice. It polling your passport, that gets your attention, that doesnt happen to most people, having to wear a Bandaid Box sized gps bracelet, at minimum, its tough to accessorize with, what do you think is going on here . O crimea river. There are 1 Million theres thousands of kids who get arrested and nobody says, you are going to have to stay in Santa Monica and take it first class to New York. You can be bother to be with Everyone Else in jail whos been charged of a crime. The guys has got millions of bucks, he only had to put 5 Million down its just great to be rich and white in america, thats all i have to say about this. Everyone thinks that its a big thing, 250 million, he doesnt have to put 200 and 50 million. He has this deal, he is obviously a flight risk. The guy has got planes, he has A Billion dollars. He has houses in different places, he has friends everywhere. And, frankly, i think its kind of a sweet deal. Compared to what your average defendant gets in america. Certainly your average poor, black, kid who is charged with a felony. I refuse to go on and on about what a tough deal it is. I dont see it as a tough deal. I just see it as more proof that if you are rich in white you get a better deal in america. I think its outrageous. I think you should be in jail, that he shouldve taken a plane with cups on like Everyone Else, that he shouldve gone to brooklyn, got in the arraignment, and dealt with it there. Everybody else would be treated, and he has a bigger better deal. I disapprove of that. I had a feeling you might have an opinion on this case, thats why. Asked jon lemire, What Susan page, Cynthia Alksne our starting line on a Friday Night with our great things for starting us off. Have a good weekend everyone. Coming up, if telling the truth were in olympic sport, what our elected officials evil set their sights on broadens . Six months into a new presidency, are huge agenda at stake, a pandemic that wont go away, the Stakes Couldnt be higher as well discuss with our next guests. And later, about that pandemic, about our current spike among the unvaccinated, an er Doctor Friend of ours standing by to share his outrage over preventable deaths going on. How all of it as the 11th Hour just getting underway on a Friday Night where in washington, its more like the Red White And Blue House cheering on Team Usa tonight. On Team Usa tonight isnt it disappointing when your plugin fades . Once that freshness goes away, youre left thinking, okay. Now what . Febreze Fade defy plug works differently. Its the first plugin with builtin technology. To digitally control how much scent is released. To smell 1st day fresh for 50 days. It even tells you when its ready to be refilled. Upgrade to Febreze Fade defy plug. And there you have it wireless on the fastest, most reliable network. Wow Big Deal we get unlimited for just 30 Bucks. I get that too and mine has 5g included. Impressive. Impressive is saving Four Hundred Bucks a year. Four bucks . Thats tough to beat. Relax people, my wireless is crushing it. Okay, thats because you all have xfinity mobile. Its wireless so good, it keeps one upping itself. With the president s infrastructure agenda influx, 150 different organizations, including civil rights groups are now urging him to prioritize passing those too expensive Voting Rights bills. The New York times says this. Ultimately, the advocates fear that the biden administration, currently focused on a bipartisan Infrastructure Deal and an ambitious spending proposal, has largely accepted the republican restrictions as baked in, and is now dedicating more of its efforts to juicing democratic turnout. That is saying a lot. Lets get reaction. For more we are joined by but don Calloway And Bill kristol what. Bill crystal is author, politico, and veteran of the Reagan And Bush administration. Editor at large of the bulwark. Don, id like to begin with you. You put it one way, a pandemic that wont stop. Infrastructure stagnation, Voting Rights getting taken away in broad daylight out loud. It would be enough to worry a democrat. How worried are you . Im pretty worried. Because the reality of the matter is that even if we were to pass the for the people act, and or, or both and the john lewis act, we have a serious problem when it comes to implementation and budgeting. Because all these things have to make their way through various state and local and County Election authorities. People have to learn how to implement the new rules in time for the elections, the November 2022 election season. So im worried from a practical standpoint. But from an electoral standpoint, in washington d. C. , i am particularly worried. Because it looks like democrats are going through a by annual ritual of doing everything we can to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. There is nothing ive seen in the national democratic conquer caucus, and of course i am not privy to the conversations of leadership, but there is nothing i have seen that suggests there is an innovative way to corral this caucus. We have heard some encouraging messages from joe manchin. I believe the house democrats had a positive impact on him. But we have still not heard that definitive statement yet, that shows that we are ready to use the actual power that we have, at least while we have it. So i am concerned. Never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Hey bill, lets push our focus to tuesday and the first hearing of the one six committee. Heres how the Ap Committee puts it. Regarding one of the more famous Committee Members. Ap will forgive me for saying that that is a bit of a dog, a bit obvious. She is obviously a consequential person. Of all the Committee Members chosen, she could be among the dominant drivers of the conversation, the questioning, the investigation. I think thats right. And i think Nancy Pelosi will be vindicated for not accepting those nominees, not accepting at least two of them, and then mccarthy did the other three. I guess they will end up without the others, perhaps they will be asked to join by the speaker. Thats a capable group, its a serious investigation, republicans will complain that it is partisan. But the testimony will be testimony, under oath, the depositions and the report. And we will learn more about what happened on january 6th, what happened in the run up in the White House and in the Justice Department and defense department. I think the facts short term, even a lot of democrats and liberals are, oh, she doesnt understand, it looks bad. I think it was a hardheaded decision on her part and will be vindicated. Don, we dont nothing could make the topic of the one six committee more serious. We saw it all. And nothing tells us how serious it is then the republican attempts to tell us that what we saw was not correct. What we saw was not reality. Why not make this as big as they can . Get as much public attention as they can . How about one or two sessions in Prime Time, to get the largest audience . Given that we are in the middle of the summer. Why do you think the american people need to hear from this committee . R i dont really think you need to hear anything. I think we are focused on the wrong sense. We saw it all, we saw it on january 6th. If i was Nancy Pelosi or any thompson of mississippi, all i would do is play the footage. And you could play the gentleman who has been so articulate, the officer, you could play footage from him. And what it felt like to be in World War ii, or The Killing Fields in vietnam. And i think we have seen all that needs to be said. And theres very little testimony, outside of what was already said, but you make an excellent point. This should be Prime Time television. Unfortunately, its competing with the olympics but america needs to see this, in the same way we saw the kavanaugh hearings. In the same way we see the state of the union. Perhaps its a ratings play, you know more about that and i do, but people need to see it, and people need to be confronted with the reality. This is something we cannot look away from. If you talk to the veterans of the civil rights movement, they will tell you that seeing the images of dogs biting human beings, and water being sprayed on people in montgomery, that was the thing that was broadcast, that tip the scales. It made a difference, to make you take action in the civil rights days. Perhaps theres some value of that in this context, and we need to think about the power of the media that we have. You are so right. Even the girls of images of girls getting escorted into schools by federal officers didnt sway people, but others did. An officer who did not think he would not survive that day, people were saying kill him with his own gun. Our guest will stay with us over this break. Coming up, what to expect thats quite a distinction, this retiree will headrest to arizona this weekend. St T Arizona this Weekend Arizona this weekend so sudden. Tomorrow, that twice impeached call one eight hundred, Eight Million former president scheduled to appear in phoenix for an event called the, quote, rallied to protect our elections. Donald trump has yet to announce an official decision to run in 2024, but Author Michael Wolf says he is sure trump will run. Wolf writes this in the New York times, quote, it isnt a set existential predicament, he cant beat Donald Trump without a claim on the presidency. He cant hold the Attention And Devotion of the republican party if he is not both once and future king, and why would he never give that up. Still with us are our guests don Callaway And Bill crystal. Bill, right to you, is Michael Wolf right, you think . Probably. Nothing is certain, two years is a long way away. Its a lot of trouble to cement his hold on the republican party. He does not want to run again in 2024, and i dont know how much he cares about this one air of his so i think you would like to be president again, i think in his own way, it is incredibly effective in the matter of six months, but discouraging for me. , biden seems to have come down. On the republican side, cheney is insisting on the truth. The countdown to trump gets more and more will see more in the republican primaries, for now he looks strong. But yes i think. So he plans to run for president in 2024. Don, its been remarkable to watch republicans become the party of vaccines over the last, lets say, 48 to 72 hours. I want to play for you some of the angry reaction from one James Carville on this broadcast Last Night. Its been available for seven months, seven months after the republican doctors say we need to take. It its ridiculous, people are not having to disrupt social schedules, moving plans around, were gonna start closing things again. All because these republicans are saying the seven months later, hey might be a good idea if you took this. Don, the conventional wisdom is they either saw some hellacious polling or they saw this was starting to kill people and almost exclusively Red State areas. Maybe its a bit of both. Two things can be true at the same time. Actually, ive had some great conversations with my Family And Alabama and throughout the south over the course of the last week. And im a lot more sympathetic to vaccine hesitate ors than i was, perhaps the last time that you, me, and bill met. I think we made a mistake in this country by casting the face of those who are reluctant to take the vaccine as toothless rednecks. Because of what history of distrust in the medical system, and because a history of distrust in the government, i think people are reasonable for being hesitant and being reluctant to take a vaccine that was developed with this view. I happen to trust science, i happen to trust the vatican experts of the day. But there is a very real history of medical malfeasance, and now, if you dont take the vaccine, you need to decide to social distance and quarantine. But i think we need to and we particularly on the left, need to be more cautious with their messaging with by not casting as people as villains for to not take the vaccine. I think that we should be encouraging people to take, it but i think its wrong to use language like cotton James Carville does such as, dunns, because were talking about a specific region. Were talking about African Americans where there is not a single state in this country where we are outpacing i think we need to be more cautious about how we talk about this thing. And meet people where they, are understand and meet with them with Compassion And Love and talk about the reasons why they are not rather than castigating. That is not getting us anywhere. And i am glad to see Governor Meemaw as we affectionately call her do the right thing. The senate will meet in the middle ground and cast aside the rhetoric. All points taken, i would also be remissed without a shout out to the South Carolina State bulldogs without pointing out that it is the Alma Mater of one Congressman Gelber and eugene robinson. They have been noticed tonight. Thanks to our guests john callaway, thanks as always to our guest bill crystal, thanks gentlemen, have a good weekend, and thanks for staying up with us tonight. Coming, up an update from an emergency room doctor. On what he sees where he lives and works. A report from the trenches as it were after this. Were after this when you really need to sleep you reach for the really good stuff. New Zzzquil Ultra helps you sleep better and longer when you need it most. Its non habit forming and powered by the makers of nyquil. New Zzzquil Ultra. When you really really need to sleep. If you dont get the overwhelming of the proportion of the population vaccinated, you will have a continual Circulation And Replication of the virus in the community. They are are and now unvaccinated people that this could go on for a considerable period of time. There will be hospitalizations, there will be deaths, and every death and every hospitalisation, particularly every death, is a tragic and avoidable phenomenon. Point of interest here, and its notable, fauci continues to appear on fox news. Some of the guests they have on during the Day And Night call for criminal charges against him. But another warning from the good doctor today, as the entire country faces this rapid increase in new cases, fueled by the Delta Variant. Back with us again tonight, another good doctor, dr. Stephen sample, and er physician at memorial hospital, also a volunteer clinical Faculty Member at Indiana University School of medicine. Doctor, im going to ask you about the uptick in patients. Im assuming there is an uptick in patients, how many are unvaccinated . Sure, believe me brian, The Circle goes around again and we start over. The uptick israel. Seeing new patients every Singles Shift now. 100 of the patients i have seen so far have been unvaccinated people. I am certain that there are probably breakthrough cases, as they say, here and there. But thus far i have not seen them. I have learned anecdotes of, hey i knew this guy, but overwhelmingly this is the pandemic of the unvaccinated. How ready or unready is a hospital like yours . This is the time we were all told that we can take a breath. Lets start enjoying something that reminds us of summer again. For sure. Thats where ive been. For the last couple of months, once we had our big downturn in cases, in january, it started to feel really normal again. All over the country, Emergency Department volumes, hospitalizations, they kind of fell through the cracks. We were hemorrhaging patients, we actually had time on our hands until we saw the big covid spikes. But now, since we have all started to gather i gather again, and forget there is a pandemic, we are starting to see all the old illnesses come back. And our volumes are back with a vengeance. If you tack on just a few covid patients, you put them in the hospital, you start to gum up the works. My hospital we are doing great, we are doing well. But my concern is the hospitals at the Receiving Facilities in the big cities, that we transfer the sickest to, that need services we dont provide. Those places, they are jampacked with people. Anything about the news that we are probably going to require a booster, that surprise you . In my experience, americans over 50, we look back at our childhood like we were pincushions. We were always getting a shot, that shot with the ring of needles in it, kind of a marker of your age, and where you grew up. I guess i was assuming that, like so many vaccines, we would get a booster. For sure. I was reading the article today, talking about the potential of a booster. And my reaction to that, really, is so whats . When this started i just presumed that this was going to be an annual thing, or a biannual thing. Ive been in the military for 20 years so i know would i pincushion is. Ive had 11 anthrax vaccines in my life. And certainly, you could say that my risk of exposure in my daily life is much less than my daily exposure to covid. Im curious to see with the data looks like, as it comes in, and i am learning the stuff along with you. But i promise you that when the science points to the fact that we need a vaccine booster, i am in line. I felt bad for a day or so after i felt the vaccine, but thus far on covid free. Yeah, i am right there with you. I dicier topic about your profession and the people who work in medicine. The mayor of New York is in the middle of this fight, kind of in disbelief, that there is such a high percentage of people working in Health Care, who have not been vaccinated. King in in a way they regard ths as other people, living in states that are either liberal or conservative, red or blue, the way so much of life shakes out these days. Do you know if you work with unvaccinated folks at your hospital . Has it come up as an issue . In your view, should hospitals be able to require, if you are going to work here, and be involved with patients, we need you to get vaccinated. Absolutely, yes, a, yes, its dicey, and be i know that i work alongside unvaccinated people. We are still getting people unvaccinated people you have to remember, that Health Care is us. If you look at the amount of people who work in Health Care nationwide, it is one of the biggest, if not the biggest employer, nationwide. It is a good microcosm. And you have the physicians, the people who are rigorously, scientifically trained. But then you have many people who work in Health Care, they are critical to Patient Care but they may not necessarily understand the immune system. And some of the intricacies that go with that stuff. Do i think that it should be mandated . Yes, i do. I think if you touch patients, you are absolutely responsible to do everything that you cant keep them safe. I get the Flu Vaccine every year. This is nothing like any flu i have ever seen, so i am all for it. Ladies and gentlemen, our Guest Tonight is a Military Veteran and reservist, and he our doctor, and come to find out, a pincushion in spare time.
