The pandemic, the Delta Variant is more aggressive and much more transmissible than pre existing circulating strains. It is one of the most infective respiratory illnesses that we know of that i have seen in my 20year career. Whether you are vaccinated or not, please know, we, together are Not Out Of The Woods yet dr. Walensky there, the Cdc Director says the sevenday average of new cases in our country is up 53 over just the previous week. The areas in red on this map are those particularly hard hit. This is a cdc map, portions and yellow and blue have more to low levels of infection. Three states, florida, missouri, texas, are home to about 40 of the new cases. Florida continues to lead the nation of course in new cases. A Research Group working with the cdc now projects the Delta Variant will cause a steep increase in our daily Death Toll, likely peaking at around mid october. This virus surges yet again pushing a lot of exhausted Health Care workers and hospitals to the brink. We will just feels like were going backwards, and i know that many, and a lot of other people here, are feeling very discouraged. Very disheartened. Very, in some cases, a little bit angry. This worsening situation has a lot of people wondering if were just headed back to the days of lockdowns and other restrictions on life, imposed a year ago or more. Today, the white House Press Secretary was asked about reports that there could be new guidance soon on wearing masks. We wet i can tell you is that there has been no decision to change the Mask Guidelines we right now, the cdc says fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks, by those who are unvaccinated should be wearing a mask. The president has gotten high marks in national polling, as you may, know for his handling four of the pandemic and the Vaccine Rollout thus far. But as new cases creep upward, the administration is under increasing pressure to find a way to quickly control the spread of this virus. Today, the president said the White House is trying to get ahead of the situation. We follow the signs. We whats happening now, is all the major scientific operations in this country in the fight 25 grew put together are looking at the possibilities of whats happening now. If you are vaccinated, you are safe, if you are vaccinated you have an over 90 chance of never catching that virus at all. The administration is right now surging over 1. 6 billion dollars to highrisk areas of our country for more testing, Contact Tracing as well as vaccinations support, getting shots in arms as politico reports, perhaps the biggest challenge is now in states that have made it illegal for local officials to enact certain restrictions to stop the spread of the virus. Many of those states are the ones seeing the worst outbreaks. Ron desantis, governor in florida, which today recorded over 12,000 brandnew cases, insists he has the authority to cancel local Health Orders if he thinks they infringe on individual rights. This afternoon, he drew a line in the sand for masks in schools even though children under 12 are still not eligible for vaccines. There has been talk about potentially people advocating at the federal level imposing compulsory masks on kids. Were not doing that in florida, okay . We officials at atlanta, philly, houston moving in the other direction. Beginning to recommend and in some cases require residents to mask up. Overseas, covid cases are now spiking, In Tokyo nearly 2000 reported just today. The highest there in six months. Truly is a Spike Opening Ceremony for the olympics, now just hours away, and so far, over 90 people associated with the games have tested positive. Were also keeping a close eye on the Deepening Divide on Capitol Hill over the House Select Committee to investigate the January 6th riot and insurrection. One Focus Tonight is on republican Congressman And Trump Created Kinzinger from illinois, a particular addition to this committee that pelosi has turned down to of kevin mccarthys picks. Former Congressman Kevin with wriggle men is also considered. He met with Speaker Pelosi Today in her office. And again today, the two party leaders In The House were fiercely defending their positions. This is deadly serious. This is about our constitution, its about our country. Its an assault on the capital that is being mischaracterized for some reason we at the expense we, at the expense of finding the truth for The American people. At no time in the history of a select committee in america, and i checked with a historian, is where we Speaker Pelosi done ever happen before. Is she gonna pick and choose, youre not gonna get an outcome. Royal then again, we had not seen a riot like the One On one six before, with that lets bring in our lead off guest for tonight. Peter Baker Veteran Journalist and julie pace, Washington Bureau Chief Assistant Manager Editor for the associated press, and doctor vin gupta, Critical Care apologized from seattle who has advised us on Public Health throughout the pandemic, hes also on the faculty of the Washington University Institute for health metrics and evaluation which is exactly why would like to begin with you, doctor, i would like to change or will the bid in this Question And Answer from physician to move sociologists, this antivaccine movement. The attitude its a lot of things, its social, its in some cases socioeconomic, and its political, but so far, the siloing of our country blue and red, rich and poor, liberal conservative, has not worked, the kind of shaming and lecturing has not worked. How would you go about changing public attitudes when lives are at stake . Wen lives ar at good evening, brian, great to see you. This is what ill say, first and foremost i think the cdc can recommend whatever it wants, indoor masking if they want, they can recommend that, and certainly some people, i would encourage people to do whatever they feel comfortable doing. Ultimately, Rhonda Sentence Occupational Safety and boards to enacting policies. Its important to be focusing ive been in for as much as yesterday i was in las vegas, in the suburbs, around it last week speaking to my fellow enlisted members in the military. What ill say is that people are reachable. We are putting up the white flags suggesting that people are not, that Vaccine Rates are plateauing. They just want to be spoken to in a simple, non judgmental way, they have questions. Once we answer them theyre willing to get the vaccine. Ive seen it with my own acts. We need to scale that personal is engagement and do more of it. And i think we will get to where we want to be. Debating whether cdc should do extra things, you just played what Ron Desantis said, people that want to mask will mask, and people that dont want to mask wont. Weve already cast this prologue. Peter baker, indeed, whats the doctor just said, this puts the White House in a tough spot. I am guessing, they want to be even more aggressive were policies and recommendations are concerned, only to watch Paul The Seas Go To Florida to die. Well i think that they understand that theres a great deal of fatigue particularly in certain parts of the country with the Public Health measures that have been put in place over the last year and a half. And its reimposing that more rerecommending them isnt going to convince a lot of people who are probably the ones who have been most affected by in the first place. The places where you would want more social distancing and masks again are the places where people are not getting vaccinated. People who are not listening to president Bidens Advice in the first place. It is a Catch 22 cycle that hes on, where the choices are limited. I think the frustration for biden, of course, is that he needs to get this virus under control in order to get done anything else he wants to get done. If we have another outbreak as projected in the fall, that will make it that much harder to get the economy going, itll be that much harder to get life back to normal in all kinds of parts of the country. He will be judged on his ability to get us out of the situation weve been in for the last year and a half. I think he wants to make that happen. The tools are very limited. Julie, because we live in the real world, because we live in the age of the requirement to walk and chew gum, especially those in government, what is all of this, this spike and this worry doing to the rest of the biden agenda, is it enough to derail or merely distract . That hasnt happened yet. Certainly at this point the real focus from policy perspective, Beyond Covid for the biden administration is infrastructure, theyre feeling optimistic that even though this process to get these two separate infrastructure packages, bipartisan bill, and the democratic led package to focus on what they call human infrastructure, that that is moving forward. But i think to peters point, there is now i think a bit more of a Question Mark about with the second half of this year looks like for the biden administration. At certain point they really felt like they had turned a corner on the pandemic, like they could focus on other domestic priorities and biden could start pushing some of these big legislative packages that he had promised voters. They still are moving forward down that track but i think that they are watching this closely to make sure that their focus is in the right place, there could be a Tipping Point essentially where he does need to put more Puzzle Tension more squarely in the pandemic even though that means risking some of these other big promises that he and democrats have made to voters. Doctor gupta i want to play for you part of an interview on this network earlier today with doctor has all team, the noted Vaccine Expert who as you hear takes a hard line, we will discuss on the other side. I would rather see governments say, its okay, you want to be vaccinated but then you cant go to the movie theater, you cant go to restaurants, you cant take public transportation. Thats what theyre doing in france right now. It isnt that there isnt pushback, but that is a reasonable suggestion. Yeah youre free to get infected and die yourself, but youre not free to infect other people. Oh my god he appeared on cnn, dr. Gupta what do you make of the sentiment of his remarks there . Well Doctor Hazel Tina saying that we should mandate the vaccine or have, and this is a bugaboo word, passports, but some sort of certification. Im up to mind that if we do that for polio vaccine, if we do that for meningitis for kids about to enter college, there is no reason why we cant have that same expectation for the covid vaccine. There is a lot of noise, for whatever reason that has confused this debate and not allowed us to have proper context. I think he is right. We need to have clear incentives in place, we should be talking about going backwards, we should be making it clear that if you are vaccinated you can do xyz, if youre not, youre not allowed to do those things and we should move towards mandating for certain people, including School Age children. I think youre gonna see that. And peter, lets again take off on what the doctor just mentioned, he used the Word Noise which impolite society has come to mean Disinformation And Misinformation on the vaccine and on the virus. Talk about Outreach Efforts on the part of the biden White House and are they including republicans in any of them . Yeah, thats a great question, the White House feels like its made some progress in some pockets of the communities that have larger resistance, communities of color, younger people, among people who have not had access to information or my have hesitancy for various reasons. One area where they havent made progress is ideologically, conservative voters who happened to be trump supporters. There seems to be a real wall there between the biden administration efforts and this part of The American public, theyre at their wits and with that. Obviously, those are people who are not listening to Joe Biden. Something interesting is happening in the last few days, we have seen more republicans and even Fox News institution, at least, taking on the mantle of advocating vaccines to their followers, to people who trust them. You saw Fox News in fact say that if we had public service ad, with their wellknown personalities saying that this is a good thing, you saw Sean Hannity say it tonight, vaccines are good. Not everyone is saying it, theres still those who are playing the resistance. But it does seem like on the right there is a growing awareness that this is a serious issue and that vaccines are one way out for republicans who dont want to wear masks and we dont want to be limited in the way that dr. Gupta is talking about. Julie, peter raises a great point and writ large it is that pulling it has a funny way of finding itself into policy and opinions and the public debate, and lo and behold the latest Ap Poll on something like infrastructure is whats 55 , 42 , the question could be asked when is Joe Biden, when are the democrats going to take those numbers out for a spin, the problem is that they have recalcitrant members in their own caucus, saying nothing of republicans, julie, is there any evidence of movement on this . I think some of the democratic frustration comes actually from the idea that the bills that are on the floor, going to be on the floor soon, dont go big enough. And thats where the frustration that a lot of the Progressive Wave of the party has, they would like to see the investment in human infrastructure, childcare, some of the things that come up later in the package that are far bigger than but the democrats are ultimately gonna do here. I think that democrats feel like they will be able to go, if these packages pass, they will be able to go into the midterms next year and share, not just that shot Joe Biden was able to sign legislation, i think theyre gonna argue something bigger, that it is an example of what government can do. How you can use government to for good, how we goverment can be put four to solve longstanding problems in the country. This is the case that theyre gonna make to try to convince people. This is so much more than roads and bridges. Price tags of these packages be damned. So this is again much bigger for them than just legislation. This is about philosophy of governing. We are indebted as always to our starting line tonight, Peter Baker, julie page, doctor vin gupta, very greatly appreciated, thank you for starting off our conversation. Our first break approaches and Coming Up, Nancy Pelosi says she is determined to get to the truth of one six, and she may call on more republicans to help do that. Of course, it was the gop, dont forget, that rejected the formation of a bipartisan commission on january six in the first place. That wouldve had an even number of representatives and for each party. Here with us is James Carville, rose to national fame with the Clinton Company we and Tim Miller, contributor to the bulwark, former Communications Director for jeff bush. Gentlemen, its always a pleasure for coming on. James i would like to cut begin with you, your famous advice to your party to own that insurrection every day. Hold it up to the republicans, every day. The question is, how do you reckon they have done so far this week, i noted some genuine surprise that mccarthy was going to endure fact pull a benghazi on this, threw a bunch of distractions, and including, but not limited, to pelosi didnt have enough security on hand that day. Mccarthy is a pathetic blob of protoplasm and he was panicked out of his mind on january six, calling the president begging him for help. Then he refuses to have the bipartisan committee. And now the guy has no sense of shame. Its really unbelievable when you look at the actual facts of what happened. Let me tell you something, were a lot of people know better than me and everyones judgment is the same, Nancy Pelosis tough as nails. And she correctly wants to find out, and get to the bottom, of the greatest criminal acts of the history of the united states. And i think people around the Country Support this and are just perplexed how pathetic a human Being Mccarthy is. We tend, version of the same question but ill put a spin on it, do you think the democrats realize that they have tools at their disposal to make this week give this even more gravity. Make this even more of an investigation then it looks like on the surface, for example, they could put these hearings on on prime time. And i imagine they would get a pretty substantial audience. Do you think they are doing enough to james orders, with the opportunity that they have here for the investigation . Well i better come back with a Score Card in a couple of weeks. Right now we, we Policies Move is certainly, im sure, with people in her ear think that this has to have the patina bipartisanship, lead jim Jordan Jack atlas, nonsense continue on the committee. Lead jim banks, and tucker carlsons kid she took a hard line and said no. Were not gonna turn this into a circus. Were going to take this seriously, its already a bipartisan commission, it sounds like she might add some others, maybe her Friend Denver Wriggle men, and she played hardball on that. I think that was the right first move. It will be testifying, its going to be extremely compelling testimony. I think the next challenge will be how much shes able to, and then the Committee And Betty thompson and others, are able to put the screws to mark meadows, and others, and force them to testify. Kevin mccarthy might have to testify. Anyone who has firsthand knowledge of the president s actions that. Day so the challenge is on the horizon but her first move was really strong and encouraging. James carville, as you know, ive watched, the whataboutism includes the republicans wanting to invest the murder of a Capitol Hill Police Officer on good friday in an unrelated case, they want to, as i said, investigate why pelosi didnt have more security. But at the height of it, remember, mccarthy didnt call pelosi to say, call off the dogs. He called the president to say call off the. Dogs correct. We Speaker Pelosi is just a lot smarter and a lot tougher than kevin mccarthy. Right now, i agree with him, im very encouraged. Im not surprised because mccarthy is not a particularly right man, and hes a particularly weak person. And pelosi is a bright and strong person. What so i think that were going to find out how much cooperation that these criminals on january six had from members of the congress. I know theres great interest in that. And i think that Speaker Pelosi is going to want that committee to look into that, find out if Theres Culpability because somebody was driving the getaway car. To our viewers, if you had either protoplasm or the image of a shirtless Jim Jordan on your bingo card, take a bow, youve been successful to everybody else, these two gentlemen have agreed to stay with us over this next break. Coming up, the republican Doctors Caucus, held an event today. Ostensibly, they said on vaccines, however the when data talking instead about china and the democrats. More on that when we come back. From from to microtarget damage helping to repair hair without weighing it down. Try pantene. Did you know Prilosec Otc can stop frequent heartburn before it begins . Heartburn happens when Stomach Acid refluxes into the esophagus. Prilosec otc uses a unique Delayedrelease Formula that helps it pass through the tough Stomach Acid. It then works to turn down acid production, blocking heartburn at the source. With just one pill a day, you get 24hour heartburn protection. Prilosec otc. One pill a day, 24 hours, zero heartburn. If you are at risk, you should not be getting this vaccine, this vaccine does in fact protect against symptomatic Delta Variant i have high confidence in. It i got it. Myself yes we want people vaccinated. There is not one physician, theres not one doctor here that doesnt want people vaccinated while Todays Press Conference from the gop Doctors Caucus was apparently meant to urge people to get their shots as you heard, they also use the event to attack democrats. New york times reports this way, scalise and other republicans spent most of their time on thursday discussing unproven claims that the chinese had released a virulent, humanmade virus on the World And Charge the democrats had ignored it. The emphasis on the socalled Lab Leak Theory was something of a surprise given the surge of infections concentrated in rural, strongly republican regions of the country. Remaining here with us are our guests James Carville and Tim Miller. Tim, so much comes up here. Number one, lets not forget that the obsession with china as it was known for four years, was chiefly, and initially, to distract, to make us victims in light of amos managed pandemic. Though china is on the hook for these questions, as soon as we get our Death Toll under control, number two, tim, i want to hear you out. Its been theorize that republicans are either seeing got awful polling or have realized this is ravaging mostly red states. Both of those Ops Options are pretty gross, but something has to explain them knocking each other over to get to the microphone to suddenly advocate vaccines. Sure brian. Sure, im just going to clear something. I know its bedtime on the east coast, im so sorry about the shea shirtless Jim Jordan. It was just a slip up. I do have to correct Peter Baker for a couple of segments ago who said that Sean Hannity was also being responsible of telling people to get vaccinated. Last night, he scared his audience, and he backtracked and he said that hes not telling people to do anything, they should do what is right for. Them there was some responsibility that lasted for 24 hours. On the china issue, the biden administration has it been so good about this, and psaki has been good at this and say we should get at the bottom of the origin, and this is a partisan thing. But to your question on the doctors, i think this has to do with numbers. Im happy that theyre coming out and saying that doctors and congress on the republican side, im glad that they gave a clear message that people should get vaccinated today. Im glad that a lot of republican linked officials who have been late to the game on this are looking at the delta numbers and are trying to at least show a monica love responsibility. There is something about that. But Theres Something the poll numbers. The vaccine, getting the vaccine, is something that has brought support, even within republican electorate. It has minority support. So if you look at the country, almost all the democrats want to get vaccinated, the most of the independent voters want to get vaccinated, and the republic significant minority of republican want to get vaccinated. The republicans are looking at this and theyre Gonna Run into a disastrous both saw if they find themselves in the small minority that wants to risk everybodys lives. It is irresponsible mid medically, it is politically irresponsible. So i think this is the chickens coming home to roost for a little bit and thats why you see some of them speaking out. Obviously, too late unfortunately, for some of their own constituents who have been contracting this virus. James, same question, both options grows. Death toll or pulling or a combination of both . Well first of all, its been available for seven months. Seven months after, the republican caucus finally say, hey we need to take this time and i have been texting back and forth to go to the i dont know if youre gonna have it. These people are pro death and antifootball. Im prolife and pro football. What this is ridiculous. People are now having to give up social schedules, Move Plans arounds, there are closing things again, all because these with people who wait for a seven months after the vaccine has rolled out and are now saying, hey its a good idea if you take this. Its hurting the country, and its interfering with me having fun, and i want to go to the Rose Bowl and get my hair done. Im going to the Rose Bowl one and im going to be so upset, james. Im going to the Rose Bowl, get your shot, go tigers. Im going to be there at the second string tailgaters with james. And its crazy that we have to talk about this right. Now its crazy, theyre putting us in this its insane. Theyre interfering with everybodys life. Seven months after we now theyre saying its a good idea . I mean, it they put up so many lives about this, so many people are dead. I wish that the people who refuse to get vaccinated refused to get medical treatment. Theyre Sleeping People who are not vaccinated are going to be taking up spots. Theyre already taking icus. Theyre hurting other people and interfering with other peoples lives there interfering with other Peoples Freedom right now. Well put gentleman, if youre forming a pro living, pro football caucus, im in. And because i believe there should be some suffering in life, im a lifelong New York giants fan, ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for bringing your a Game Tonight as well. See you guys at the Rose Bowl. Coming up, the former Chief Of Staff for the late John Lewis shares a new collection of some of the congressmans most powerful last words on protecting our democracy. Ng our democracy the Sleep Number 360 smart bed is on sale now. Its the most comfortable, duallyadjustable, footwarming, temperaturebalancing. Proven Quality Night Sleep weve ever made. Save up to 1,000 on select Sleep Number 360 smart beds and adjustable bases. You have a right to protest plus, 0 interest for 24 months. Only for a limited time. What is right. When you see something that is not fair, not just, you have to say something, you have to do something late congressman John Lewis and his final days from the recorded interviews used to create what would become his final book, carry on, reflections for a new generation. And while they may read like words from the great beyond, these words started life in the here and now, for example, the congressmans words when attacks against Voter Rights were underway, the civil Rights Icon warned us, quote, we cant afford to let Democracy Slip away. We fought for that right. Demonstrated with bandages on our heads. We fought to prevent changes to the voting Rights Act and then to restore it. We were wary, tired, but we had purpose. Dont take this right for granted. Dont squander it. Keep building. Its why we are so pleased to have you here with us the former Chief Of Staff to the late congressman, Tim Miller Michael Collins Michael Collins he is assistant supervise this project a lot like the congressman it is small in stature, it is packed, it is a lot going on. Its a recommended reading. I have to cut to the chase with my first question. It was almost quaint how little Voter Suppression was going on when we lost the congressman. It is now out loud, in the open, and virulent. What would he be doing right now, what would he be saying right now . He wouldve a course be speaking of what, he would not hesitate to let his voice be heard. He would be encouraging everybody, young and old, to get out, to speak up, to speak out, to say what was right, to set the record straight. But congressman was a man of integrity who literally laid his body on the line for what we know was right. And the vote was so precious, it is so precious, and the congressman believe that with all his soul and might. So he would be fighting today. And he would tell everybody to put everything on the table. There is a quote in here that i love because it contains a call back to what Doctor King called him. He says, i would like to be remembered as a boy from troy, alabama, who saw something, set something, and did something about it. I hope that those who learned my story or inspired to take action in their communities. To push, to pull, to fight for the rights of all people. And, michael, i hate asking. Weve become so different seemingly as society. There is a new kind of hard heartedness, there is a selfishness, and a lot of people are worn down. What do you think, where he still here, he would exhort, he would play that role of terror leader, especially to the base of the party . Of course. Most definitely. I knew him well, he would he was the most optimistic person you ever wanted to know. He believed that everything was possible in time. He knew that things dont happen overnight. It was going to take time in that we need to invest in people. And we need to invest in ourselves and believe in ourselves. And never gave up, he never given, he never gave out. He truly believe that we would come together and do what was necessary and do it was right. Michael, i have to share my favorite memory of him, of all the conversations i had with him was at the district office, in georgia, and i traveled there with a producer who was born and raised in haiti. She is to this day hugely successful television producer. Extremely well educated, but having grown up haitian was not steeped in the struggle. Was not talked about The American civil rights struggle, a nation she would later call home. She forthrightly made the point to the congressman who, for the next 45 minutes, without tiring, and with joy in his heart, told her the story of The American struggle. I have seen him do it, and having worked for him for 20 years, youve seen him do it countless times. He never tired of it, never inflated his own role in it. Always with modesty, but always with such great power. Do i have that about right . You have it exactly right. Thats who we was, and he wanted us to remember that. He wanted us to remember who he was and what he stood for. He wanted us to carry on, literally, he wanted us to take a look at what history was teaching us. And he wanted us to take it and teach other people, and that them not forget, so that we could move on and do what was necessary and do it was right. That was just weve, us and thats what he wanted for us all. Reading through this book, which, again, its hard to describe to those who dont have it in their hands. There must be 30 to 40 mini subcontractors, all of them beginning with, as no one needs to tell you, with the word on. On courage, on justice, on character, on humility. Is there a favorite, to you, having known him so well, a favorite Takeaway Lesson that he left us within this volume . No. No. The congressman was pure love. One and he loved Everybody And Everybody loved him. Well and thats one made a joy and smile. He would spend time with young people, hes inspired by them, love is truly he would say that, love is truly the way. And thats exactly who he was. He was he was just a numb believable man. We we all have the we were fortunate to work for him, to honor that role. Those who are able to walk beside him, to know him, just knew that he was pure love. And that we wont forget. Him and if youre going to dance with him, be ready because he could cut a rug in his day. Michael it was great to have you, here looking forward to this segment. Heres the book again its called carry on, reflections of a new generation. It is thanks to Michael Collins that it exists. And that we are able to hold it in our hands. Thank you so very much for being our guest tonight. Thank you for having me, i really appreciate it. Coming up for us, the official kickoff to tokyos delayed summer games.
