Pelosis office. She said that the House Committee will move on in without the buyin of House Leader Kevin Mccarthy. We will mo on, and the committee is in the process of hiring staff to that end. It is my responsibility as Speaker Of The House to make sure that we get to the truth on this, and we will not let their antics stand in the way of that. Now, mccarthy pulled the five appointees after pelosi rejected two of them, congressman jim Jordan And Congressman Jim Banks and both of them voted to overturn the 2020 election, and also the committee that Speaker Pelosi was nonqualifying, and also word on where they will take the election. And now Liz Cheney, the sole republican said that jordan was ineligible to serve, because he may be a material witness. For his part, mccartney accused The Democrats for playing politics with the investigation. This is a Sham Committee by Speaker Pelosi. When we wanted to do a commission in janway, she said, no, it is political. And look, The Democrats made multiple concessions to get the republican buyin may only to be blocked by a Fill Buster in the senate. A reminder of what this is all about, Nbc News has obtained audio of a interview between Carol And Donald trump about the insurrection from the book i, alone, can fix it. There was a loving crowd too by the way. There was a lot of love. Ive heard that from everybody. Many, many people have told me that was a loving crowd. Although they were ushered in by the capitol police, and they were ushering them in, and they were hugging and kissing, and you dont see that. All right. Joining us is nbc News Capitol Hill Correspondent Leigh ann caldwell, and ashley parker, and the national chairman of the serve America Movement former Congressman David jolly, and a big welcome to the three of you. Leigh ann, before we get to the committee, the House Speaker did not rule out adding more republicans to the committee, and who might they be . Thats right, geoff, she did not rule it out. And she said that the committee is now bipartisan, and she said it is nonpartisan, and of course, one republican on the Committee Representative Liz Cheney and conversations, and discussions happening, our sources tell us, about adding another republican perhaps or more. The biggest contender seems to be representative Adam Ken Zinger and an ally of representative cheney, and outspoken about the lies told about the election and January 6th consistency, and our colleague, haley talbot, she caught up with Speaker Pelosi as she was leaving her office and asked her if she thinks that Adam Kenzinger would make a good member of the Selection Committee and she said that everyone else is, and so she is getting a lot of input from the members who think that he would be a good addition on the committee, and other news that republican staff members could be added to the committee, and told that former Congressman Denver Riggleman who is someone who is considered to be a senior aide or some sort of staffer on the committee, and somebody that Liz Cheney says that she would like. She wants a republican mindset who approaches the issues in the same way that she does, geoff. And talking about the larger political dynamic, because the republicans rejected the bipartisan agreement on the commission, and now republicans criticizing the select committee, and so this is a republican calculation on the part of the gop that there is nothing to be gained by talking about January 6th or who is responsible for it . It is not just the idea that there is nothing to be gained, but some members of the republican party have said that there is a lot to be lost for the republicans to continuing to talk about the events of January 6th, that it is bad for them politically, and that it is not a winning Midterm Message if the nation is talking about how a group of trump supporters stormed the capitol as part of the deadly insurrection to overturn democracy and it is not a winning 2022 message, and winning 2024 message, and something they are eager to live past. And not to reduce this all to politics, since January 6th was an attack on our democracy. And when you are talking about the midterm strategy, help us to understand the white House View of this, because the White House has voiced the support for white House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but they have been relatively hands off, and so what is the strategy of the White House . The White Houses understanding again in general in political terms is that they have been supportive of, and especially when it comes to former president trump, as a rule, they dont want to get involved in the issues. There is a Sense And Understanding from the White House, and from operatives on both sides that 2022 in many ways on the republican side at least, they make it come down to cultural issues whether it is critical erase theory or what they say that are problems at the border, and then the White House believes that their winning message is the economy and infrastructure, and help to get past covid and show that bipartisanship works, so you will have two different sides talking past each other on two totally different sets of issues and theories of the case. David jolly, i want your reaction here by the decision of the House Speaker to reject two of the appointees from Kevin Mccarthy, and Kevin Mccarthys decision to boycott the whole thing. I think that Speaker Pelosi did the right thing, and both got what they expected politically. Speaker pelosi is wanting to get to the truth of January 6th, and they want to get to the truth. And Speaker Mccarthy is that the republican message now and through 2022 is that the hearing is simply an exercise of Nancy Pelosi. And mccarthy many ways set up Nancy Pelosi by putting up someone like rodney davis, universally liked on both sides of the aisles, and it would impossible to reject rodney davis, but impossible to accept Jim Jordan and jim bates, and she had a Leadership Decision to make, but it is a political gift to Kevin Mccarthy, and the republicans are not interested in January 6th and the truth, and they are not going to run on anything January 6th, but hyperpartisanship, and socialism, and Nancy Pelosis control of the house. This feeds that narrative rightly or wrongly, and both sides got what they wanted, and the important thing, geoff, it is not the political impact, but it is the truthtelling coming out of the committee, and that is what they are focused on. Let the nation hear what happened and let the nation hear the consequences of that politically. And in the open of the show, we heard some sound from Donald Trump in what he gave in an interview, and the revisionist lies of what happened on January 6th, and i want to hear from what you were talking about, and the president is Calling Disinformation and what he calls a beautiful word. I am a big believer in science. If i wasnt you wouldnt have the vaccine. It depends. Are you talking about the disinformation or talking about lies . Because there is a more beautiful word called disinformation. So that is a former president extolling the virtues of disinformation and that is really all it explains to Donald Trumps approach to the presidency and to life. Yes, and geoff, he has told us that before because in Art Of The Deal he said beautiful hyperbole, and people should be told they are great and grand and it is disinformation and not a lie. But Donald Trump is a lie. He lied throughout the four years of the presidency, and at times, he has been delusional. And the question is do to republican voters share the delusion, and accept the Lie And Sheep led to slaughter so to speak, and i believe it is a mix. Is Donald Trump able to continue down the path . I am not sure that the republicans are going down the path again in 2024. And with the linking of two teams in the interview that Donald Trump gave to carol and phil, and so is the opposition to the committee all about protecting Donald Trump who is right now the frontrunner 2024, David Jolly . Yeah, look, these were republicans who stormed the capitol, and as a matter of fact, here on american soil, we had the republicans disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. And so the republicans that they would root out the individuals from the ranks, but they are scared to, because they dont have leaders willing to make the sacrifice, and instead, they have the eye on the Ballot Box in 2024, so it is not just the party to do what they called disinformation, which is a lie. The republicans should be involved in, but consider the Impeachment Cycle and they did not run on the Mueller Report and ukraine and topple the administration. So the republicans are taking the same bet. They ran the Health Care and economic message that proved to be a winning one. My thanks to the three of you. And now, a member of the January 6th committee democratic congressman keith aguilar. Today, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the more bipartisan the members, the more the american people will accept the outcome. So do you think that said, you should have more republicans to support the work . I support the speakers approach, to make it not only bipartisan, but nonpart san, because we should seek the facts, and make it an honest fact, and that is the objective is to find the facts, and chase the facts on the oath to the constitution. The more individuals doing that with us, the better, but we should have the baseline of seeking the truth. When i look around the members of the table now, we are all committed, democrats and republican to do that. We have spent a lot time Yesterday And Today talking about the politics surrounding the work that your committee will do. But give us a sense of that investigation, how you will actually seek the truth as you put it. The first hearing is tuesday morning, and speaking with Law Enforcement officers is on January 6th at the capitol, and what comes after that . The hallmark here is talking about this event, the January 6th event, and how it affected us, and how it affects democracy, because the peaceful transfer of power is the hallmark of power. So we will start with the two metro officers, and the two d. C. Officers who are going to share with the public and Committee Members who happened that day, and what led to the events, and how they had been responding, and how they had been doing since then. Some have made their stories public, and we will ask them to do that again. As we build on, and make our case for democracy to ensure that this never happens again, and we will start with the position to honor and respect those who were truly the line of defense between us and the insurrectionists who were trying to carry out an assault on to democracy. Yesterday, the fellow Committee Member Liz Cheney said that Jim Jordan is a material witness, and do you plan on calling him, and the former president himself . Well, time will tell. We will start with the first witness, and have the officers tell their powerful stories, and then set a hearings, and talk about the events that led up to January 6th, and how it was financed and carried out, and start to peel the onion to get to the truth. As individuals as chairman Benny Thompson has mentioned, if you have information that is pertinent to us, and our investigation, and discussion into this, we would hope they would share our stories, but we are only concerned about the Cause And Effect of what led up to the events of January 6th, and to the extent that people have information and knowledge, we would hope they would voluntarily come forward and share their stories. Congressman Pete Aguilar who is a member of the January 6 Select committee, we appreciate your time this afternoon. Thank you. And now, a Test Vote is failed in the senate blocked by republicans, and will the bill get another vote next week . That is what The Democrats are hoping for. And now, a bill to help Fight Violence in the country. And a spike In Covid in children, and what that means for schools this fall. Golo helps with insulin resistance, getting rid of sugar cravings, helps control stress, and emotional eating, and losing weight. Go to golo. Com and see how golo can change your life. Thats golo. Com. My colleagues on both sides of the aisle should be assured as majority leader, i have every intention of passing both major infrastructure packages, the bipartisan Infrastructure Framework, and the conciliary infrastructure plan. And he is talking about the infrastructure bill, and that will allow trillions more to be passed, and to get it done is an understatement difficulty. And joining us is garrett haake, the hardest working man here in the washington bureau. Ill take it. How does this work . Say everything goes the way that democrats planned it. Monday, the second Test Vote on this bipartisan Infrastructure Framework and moves forward and then you to add to it The Democrats only build, and it is going to have the bill passed in tandem. How does that work . Oh, you make it sound so easy. If it goes well, they will start the debate monday. And typically the bipartisan group working to this point are becoming engaged, and they want to make sure that the priorities are included in one of the two bills and the Funding Formulas are what they are. And so it is dozens of Joe Man chins potentially . Yes, and any one democratic senator can do what manchin does, and says that their priorities have to be included or else. That matters when you need everyone. So what we will see is a deterred framework. And so it is not a bill yet, and only then can it be moved as a bill. So it is Top Line only number for a while, because that is how the number works, so there is a lot of juggling before you get to that point. And mike memoli, last night, despite that, President Biden gave a Town Hall on a network that shall not be named, but lets listen to that. They expect a vote monday and how much time do they have to get this done . Monday. I am not being facetious, monday is a vote to proceed to this ocean, and then they debate the issues, the elements of this plan to make sure that you get that Damn Bridge going into kentucky. I am serious. Fixing the local bridge is always a local applause line. So how does the President Message out the people that on the one hand, there is a bare knuckle political fight over the January 6th committee, and then on the other hand, you have democrats, and republicans working together on infrastructure. Well, geoff, this is a white House Encyclopedia that is suited for twitter with 140 characters. The shrug on this failed Test Vote, that is certainly otherwise looking for a bad sign for them is not the reaction that we have been seeing play out from this White House. They are supremely confident in this process both because of the conversation that we are having privately behind the scenes, and we will hear more about this over the course of the next few weeks, the politics, they see it on their side here, and what is striking, geoff, some of the president s top negotiations, the president , himself, he has not been doing the Oval Office meetings with the lawmakers Behind Closed Doors and again, today, he is doing to outsidein pressure with the Labor Leaders and the Business Leaders to send the message that this is something that is really both a priority of the traditional republican, and traditional democratic constituencies, and that is why they are confident. And the president , while i have you, mike, he put out a statement on the historic protests in cuba, and he said, today my administration going to be putting out new sanctions is targeting elements of the cuban regime responsible for the crackdowns, and the Cuban Ministry Responsible for this crackdown of the cuban people. Yes, he is the last one in The Room who is getting pressure from both sides, and he is a president who knows full well in a political context how the cuban community voted. The Hispanic Vote did not fall like it was supposed to. So he has made a decision to side with the voices most pressuring him in South Florida especially, and also notable in the statement that he talked about looking at other policies to maximize support for the cuban people including potentially ways to provide Internet Service to get around the censorship there. And so he is sending a message with the announcement today. Mike memoli, and garrett haake, thank you to both of you. Is it time to mask back up . The president is looking Agent Covid quickly spreading across the u. S. And we will talk about a School Superintendent about how to keep kids safe in the classrooms this fall. So he used his American Express business card, which offers Spending Power built for his business needs, to furnish a new exam room. The doctor will see you now. Get the card built for business. By American Express. And now, with us is dr. Jha from the Dean Opublic schools, and why not just bringing Back Masks, and why wouldnt the cdc err on the side of caution to bring Back Masks . It is a good question, geoff. Thank you for having me back. Well, they are thinking of compliance, and are they going to do what we recommend. If people do not listen to cdc, that is undermining confidence, and that is part of it. They dont want to send a signal that the vaccines dont work, when we know that they do. Clearly, unvaccinated people should wear some tasks, and if you are protected from a calculation at cdc of what to do next. That is interesting. One of the phrases that we have heard so often is trust the science and what you saying is that public Health Guidance is something else to take into account whether the people are going to be doing the thing they that are encouraged to do. Yeah, two parts of it. The science is pretty clear that if i am a fully vaccinated person, i dont realize a risk to other people, and why are you asking people to mask up . It is because of places like you need to mask up. That is what the frnlgts and you may believe that abstinence is the better issue, but you have to look at what is the better choice for you, and that is another part of the criteria. And can you put into context where we are in the pandemic, and some people are very worried about the delta criteria, and for the most part people ages 65 and older have been vaccinated and then layer on top of the it, the break through cases, and so people dont know what to make of the pandemic . Yes, it is confusing moment, so break it apart. I think that the worst days of the pandemic are behind us, and the horrible days of january and february where we had 250,000 americans getting infected and 100,000 americans dying. That is behind us because of the vaccination. But we are just in the early days of the delta serge. And people are understanding how bad it is if you are unvaccinated in america. We will see a lot more people affected and die, and most of them run vaccinated, but the problem is that we live in one country, one community and one society, and we have large outbreaks among the unvaccinated, it is going to cause some spillover, and some spillage in the unvaccinated and i expect those people to do extremely well, but nothing is perfect. You will have a few of the vaccinated people get sick, but those numbers will be small. Thank you for the Context And Clarity as always. Meanwhile, the school countries across the country will weigh their possibilities. In atlanta, they will require all masks for students and staff regardless of the Vaccination Staff in line with the American Academy Of Pediatrics. And governor Roy Cooper updated the guidelines of all Students 6th through 8th Grade will wear mask. Currently, it was for students aged 14 and under. Reporting for us now is dasha burns, and so now, we know who has been infected, and how is that affecting this mandate of wearing the masks . Just last week and this week, North Carolina saw 30 increase in the covid for children under 14. This is a tough time for the schools planning for the fall. You can see the line of cars behind me, and these are the parents picking up the children from Middle School who has a Yearround Program available in durham public schools, and they came back around the time that we heard of the increasing numbers. As you mentioned, the governor recommended that for children and Staff Wear tasks, and for athletics they could take the masks off, but as strongly as they urge the guidelines, it has to come down to the local and the district level, and it was not clear if the state could enforce the rules. And some districts where they are hesitant to mask up. This is a flashpoint for schools across the country, and something to be tackled. But here in durham, they have taken it further than the governors recommendations. They will mask up across the board even in high school. This is what we have heard. The younger students cannot be vaccinated, so we will continue. Not every older student will be vaccinated, and so it is simpler to deal with the inconvenience of a mask than to try to identify how and whether every single person in the school is vaccinated. Geoff, those students eligible 12 to 17yearolds is low with only 12 vaccinate and the message for the district is that for the 12yearold who has a vaccine, they are helping to protect the younger kids who are not, and they are hoping that families will take that into consideration. Thank you. And now, joining us is two school principals. Dr. Weatherspoon, talking about the mask policy, your current policy is masks optional despite the recommendation of the American Academy Of Pediatrics saying that all students and staff should make that call. What is that call . Actually that is something that came down from the state forbidding if you will any kind of mask mandate, so what we have done in light of that, and still keep our other Safety Protocols mitigating strategies in place, but we are communicating very heavily that the masks are indeed optional, and what the cdc, and the aap has come up with, and now we are waiting on the local State Guidelines as well. We are encouraging the mask wearing and encouraging those protocols as well. Dr. Matthews, you are taking issues with Aap And Cdc not being on the same page when it kojs to mask wearing among children, and help us to understand. Well, it is complicated and in michigan in june, the State Lift Auld restrictions on masks and restrictions and gatherings, and this past weekend, we had 32,000 at Comerica Park Cheering on the tigers yelling and screaming in close contact, and the aap recommends or mandates the mask wearing for everyone. And the cdc is recommending it for unvaccinated people, and so there is a confusing message that our parents hear, and so they have difficulty understanding why i can go to Comerica Park and sit shoulder to shoulder without wearing a mask, and yet, you will have require a mask for the students. So, in our district, we have summer school, and we have masks optional, and majority did, and we had covid testing for the athletes and administered over 2,000 tests and less than 1 came back positive, so we are trying to understand the impact of the students, and trying to keep them safe everyday. The parents send them to school, and they expect us to keep them safe, so we are trying to do the best thing that we can, and create a Learning Environment to keep them comfortable, and interact with one another, and learn each day. Dr. Witherspoon, this is a tough academic year, and being a School Superintendent is tough job, and my dad was a School Superintendent, anded you are serving as not only the superintendent, but crisis manager, and epidemiologist, and what are the Best Practices that you have picked up over the last year about how to keep the students safe . I want to give a Shout Out to staff and administrators they have done to navigate virtual, hybrid, facetoface, and on the Safety Protocols, and everything that we have had to do, and that being said, we have heard the mitigating strategies for all of those that were laid out by Health Officials and the mask wearing and the Hand Washing and the social distancing and the Cleaning Protocols and the contact tracing, and our team continues to do that, and will continue to do that through the fall, and keeping everyone informed. We did several videoconferences with parents and staff, and all of those things. We have offered this summer and worked with local Health Departments with vaccinations and screenings. We will continue to have the screenings throughout the school year. We meet regularly with others throughout the school year, and for those with others to do, and we will bring them back to our team, and evaluate to see how to keep School Being as safe as possible. We want the students back in, and there is no question, a better place for them to be is in school, but the question is again is how to keep school as safe as possible for our students and for our staff knowing that we sit in communities and monitor as Community Spread continues or the decreases that we are aware of those things, and we act accordingly. To both of you, thank you. Coming up next, the doj is taking on Gun Violence. And targeting gun traffickers. y with secret. Secret stops odor causing Sweat 3x more. The instant Air Purifier removes 99. 9 of the virus that causes covid19 from treated air. So you can breathe easier, knowing that you and your family have added protection. And we have breaking news to tell you about, about u. S. Air strikes against the taliban in afghanistan. Lets bring in our Correspondent Courtney Cubii and they are going to say, i thought the u. S. Troops left. What can you tell us about this . That is right. They would be right. The vast majority of the u. S. Troops, the personnel and everything else is out of afghanistan, and very, very, very small contingent left there now. But what we do know is that the u. S. Air strikes were targeting the taliban near kandahar, and the u. S. Is going to maintain that authority to carry out the strikes like that until the end of august when the u. S. Military presence there ends. And general kenny took over the authority in kabul who can carry out those Air Strikes like the one last night. And now, the taliban has been in the offensive, and all parts of the country, and in last week or two, there has been concern about kandahar and them going to kandahar and trying to take it over. That is something that general mckenzie told me about when we were traveling in afghanistan last week. So it is not surprising that is where we would see them. But as the taliban has been moving in so other areas to flee, and in others, the taliban have been taking up the equipment. So according to the Defense Officials the equipment in the area were being taken over, so the attacks were done by unmanned aircraft, and flown from outside of the country, and the u. S. Has virtually no aircraft left in afghanistan at that point. The very latest from courtney kube. And now, faced with a gun spikes, and any chance of reform stalled in congress, the doj is launching socalled gun strikes. This is attorney general Merrick Garland speaking about this earlier today. The Gun Violence tragedies now facing the country, and over many years needless to say affects the communities and the security and the safety and also the community of the Law Enforcement officers. And here with the latest is our Justice Correspondent Pete Williams. You have Law Enforcement agents is targeting gun traffickers, but how does this Law Work . Looking for one source who runs the guns. So of the share, some of the guns were stolen, and some of them obtained by people not legally obtained, and they are going to buy them from sources that dont require Background Checks like private sales, but some are straw purchasers, and people who are legally qualify and by them for someone who doesnt want a record or by someone this initiative is aimed at to try to get more prosecution at these. There is no Straw Purchase Law or that type of law, but the next is to get somebody who has been filling out false paperwork. So that is a loser over the years for prosecutors, so sharpen up the ability to bring more of them, and be more aggressive, and that is the focus. Calling the strike forces is misleading and has the mental image of people descending on an area, but that is not what this is. It is trying to leverage what is already there to have a more sustained effort. Instead of a multi Month Thing to try to keep it going with the straw purchases which is one of the purchases for a community. Thank you, Pete Williams for the breaking update. Several major websites are back up after being shutdown for an hour earlier today, and the widespread was led to akamai, and u. P. S. , and Delta Air lines were among the outages which prevented some customers at delta from checking in. And they did find a fix to allow them to return to normal. And turning now to that smoke from Western Wild fires that has spread across the country, haze is blanketing eastern skies, causing vibrant red sunsets, but as stunning as some of the images are, the smoke is triggering Air Quality alerts and putting vulnerable communities at risk. Nbc News Correspondent Kerry Sanders in charlotte, North Carolina, with more. Reporter jeff, the Air Quality data that they gather here only goes to confirm what folks in the midwest and to the east already know when they go outside, Take A Deep Breath and look up. I was having a little trouble with trying to catch my Breath And Breathing and i just thought i was overheated. But now i can, you know, really see that its not just from the heat but its from the haze as well. Makes it feel more humid almost. Its very humid. Air is very sticky. Reporter scientists say these extreme fires are another example of our changing climate. Impacts of Climate Change may be seen in many different ways, including droughts, floods, increased storms, wild fires both in terms of extent and intensity. Reporter when it comes to the smoke, the most impacted are those who are sensitive, like the elderly and the very young. Health officials say, look, its fine to go outside. Let the kids still play, but if you hear them battling like theyre out of breath or coughing too much, perhaps best good thing to bring them indoors, jeff.
