The fact that she has rejected two recommendations for two members who have indicated that they are not supportive of the objective of the select committee is consistent with how serious this committee is and how important it is to have patriots serving on this committee, not partisans. This must be an investigation focused on facts, and the idea that any of this has become politicized is really unworthy of the office that we all hold and unworthy of our republic. There was lots of questions if he was even going to appoint anyone. He ended up doing that, and so, yeah, he absolutely can pull his members, and as you said at the top, this is an unprecedented move by pelosi. Also in unprecedent times, congress has really been broken since January 6th, and this is a further manifestation of that, jonathan. Unprecedent but also maybe predictable . Walk us through how this plays out now. Lets say mccarthy refuses to put any members on the committee. Does he create his own committee or Working Group to come up with their own findings or does he simply say, hey, pelosi is stacked with democrats and you Cant Trust Anything they say and well be left with team red, team blue, and no answers for the american people. Reporter yeah. It could be a combination of all of those things. As far as the democrats or pelosi pick, you cant call them democrats because theres one representative, cheney, on that committee. Theyre moving forward. Theyre holding their first meeting on next tuesday. Speaker pelosi had reiterated she had a quorum. Shes going to continue this investigation with or without the choices. As far as mccarthy is concerned, he says hes going to continue to investigate. Theres not going to be a lot of teeth behind the investigation. What this is doing is enabling mccarthy to play offense, to attack this committee from afar, not from within. And that could be really challenging for mccarthy, but what republicans are trying to do and what they were trying to do even before mccarthy withdrew his picks is really trying to undermine the committee, saying that this is a partisan hack job, and thats been their message ever since yesterday. You can see that continue. Theyre going to really try to undermine the commission. Lets remember it was the republicans and senate who scuttled the 9 11 bipartisan commission of what happening on January 6th. Whats the State Of Play . Is this something thats going to get done . We know how much the biden administration has invested in this being a bipartisan agreement. Yeah, absolutely. I think first off its no mistake you saw president Biden Speaken from cincinnati, which is the hometown of ron portman. He kept praising him specifically because it seems like, according to President Biden, there is actually room for bipartisan agreement on this. He didnt seem all that bothered Last Night, that this Test Vote had failed yesterday. One really interesting dynamic here that im sure youve also picked up in talking with folks close to and at the White House, theres a general optimism something will get passed in a bipartisan way. But there are those not so confident theyll get ten republican senators, dow think theyll get them. They think if the first measure does fail, they think doing that, going through the process and proving that the republicans arent on board with this process will allow them to make a much bigger push on Party Lines using reconciliation Down The Line in a few months. Obviously were not quite at that point yet, but there are a lot of democratic senators cautiously optimistic, more so than a few days ago. Gabe, thats totally right. Democrats outside the building say, hey, if this falls apart, we can go that much bigger on the reconciliation bill, and were sending reassuring signals to the moderates. Let me ask you about something else, the sort of interesting dynamic in washington where, yes, as we just discussed, that vote fell apart yesterday, but theres some sort of bipartisan energy over infrastructure. Conversely on the other side of the capital, we have this bitter partisan warfare over the January 6th commission, two different tones there. Give us a State Of Play. Were coming up on a year and a half from midterms. Washington might be able to get something done in bipartisan fashion. Where do you think things stand . What momentum do we have . I think that for one thing democrats, especially those close to the White House, are excited or at least a little bit more optimistic about where they stand than you might expect because at this point in most off years, you have the party feeling much more optimistic. Youll have republicans thinking they can win the house in a year and a half, but theres a long way between now and then. As you said, its not exactly a happy environment on capitol hill. One of the reasons democrats feel good is they think theyve found a way to pass these massive priorities, and even if they have to do it on Party Line votes, they think theyll be able to do it. Its possible in a way thats popular with the american people. But the reality is infrastructure is not exactly the sexiest topic. Its not something that gets a lot of americans going in a political sense, and so the White House knows it has to do a real job of trying to convince people to care about this. But when it comes to, you know, more partisan looking things, whether its immigration, Voting Rights, things that have been framed often by republicans as very partisan issues, you know, democrats have had a hard time pushing through th through in a legislative matter. Everyone in the White House essentially thinks the clock is ticking to get things done because in the next year once everyone is thinking about the midterms, No One is too optimistic. We were encouraged yesterday by Senator Mitt Romneys Letter that included 21 senators of both sides of the aisle stating essentially that theyre making progress, theyve been working closely together as weve seen the last several weeks on trying to resolve some of the issues. So they feel very confident that they will have something to share, to move this process along. What we saw yesterday from senator schumer, which we wholeheartedly supported, was a process to move this forward, right, which is a process to get that vehicle going, get that motion going and making that commitment. And so heres the thing, too, jonathan. This president , President Biden, is incredibly proud of what he was able to do with both republicans and democrats less than a month ago and something we havent seen as you know in washington in several years, coming together in a bipartisan way on an issue that is very popular across the board, across the country for republicans, independents, democrats. Weve seen this in polling on something thats historic in terms of roads and bridges and rails as the president talked about Last Night and making an investment and making sure americans have broadband. After this pandemic, we now understand the importance of broadband investment and clean water. This is something the president is very proud on and will continue to work with senators these next coming days and making sure this happens to the american people. The president fielded questions about the rise in covid19 cases fueled by this Delta Variant. So what is the white Houses Message right now to those still resistant to the vaccines . And can you tell us, is there any consideration about advocating a return to mask wearing across the country . So right now what we have been very clear about and the president was clear about Last Night is we have to listen to the public health officials. We have to listen to our doctors. We have to listen to the scientists. And our message is very clear, which is people need to go get vaccinated. Look, jonathan. When the president came into office six months ago and he was up against an economic crisis, this covid pandemic, that day when he took office, it was 3,000 people a day that were dying. 3,000 people a day. More than 190,000 cases that we were seeing of covid19. We have made significant progress since then. And we have more than 160 Million people who are vaccinated. Thats 300 Million doses. So we have made progress, of course, but we need to continue to move and get people vaccinated, and its been weve been very clear. The vaccinations are free. Its very easy to get them. We have made sure that weve worked with communities, worked with trusted voices to get that done. If you are fully vaccinated, you are highly protected from covid19 and the Delta Variant. That is the message from us. That is the message from the scientists and the experts. Right now and the president said this Last Night as well this is the pandemic for the unvaccinated. When were seeing 300 people now a day dying from covid19, that could be prevented, jonathan. It is unnecessary that were seeing these numbers, so we have to continue to said and were going to work throughout the next several weeks and throughout the summer to make sure that people are getting vaccinated. Were seeing that. 100,000 people a day or more so a day are getting vaccinated every day. Were going to continue to work Hand In hand with local governments and states to happe we played the clip of the president talking about the voting Rights Push and the talking filibuster. Has the president spoken to democrats in congress about making a change to the filibuster which many believe is the only way any legislative to protect Voting Rights could get passed . What Time Line are we perhaps looking at for that much needed reform . Heres the thing, the president , as you mentioned, talked about this Last Night. And the thing that he said actually was, he believes we can do this in a bipartisan way. And this is something that, you know, he was a senator for 36 years, Vice President for eight years, the bipartisan bipartisanship is the way to go here. Hes been clear about Voting Rights. He said its an attack on our democracy. What were seeing across the country with these bills coming out of the State Legislatures is undemocratic, small d, he was in philadelphia as you know talking about this in a powerful and forceful way. He will work with advocates as well. We see the Vice President , who has been leading this effort as well in partnership with the president having meetings making that clear as well with leader that is shes been meeting with and advocates. So hes going to continue to talk to congressional members, hes going to continue to talk to the american people to make this very clear that this is an attack on our democracy. We should have, you know, the right to vote. Everyone should have the right to vote and do it freely and not have to come up against all of these obstacles that were seeing in these several states across the country.
