And touchdown. Welcome back new shepards first human crew. Welcome to earth. Congratulations to All Of You. Youve watched all of it unfold live here. Billionaire Jeff Bezos and his crew, check it out, popping open the hatch of the rocket and popping some champagne, too, first unpiloted Suborbital Flight all civilian Crew Landing successfully on the 52nd anniversary of the lunar landing. Were gearing up to hear from the crew members during a News Conference and that includes 82yearold Wally Funk, involved in the Mercury Program who became the oldest person to go into space. Look at her popping out of the capsule there, about seven hours away from the Launch Site in south lake, texas. A wally watch party her family and friends cheering her on as she made this historic flight, tears, emotion, joy, all of it. We are here with you for the next couple of hours for a special coverage. I bring in nbcs morgan Chesky And Van horn in texas and all Astronaut Panel of experts with us, Mike Massimino flew two missions, four space walks and the first person to tweet from space. Hes Senior Adviser for Space Programs at the intrepid museum. Becky whitson, first female commander of the international Space Station, holds the record among american astronauts for spending the most time in space, 665 days and in the fall of next Year Shell be the Mission Commander for the Spais Ex Commission to the Iss And Leo melvin served as Nasa Education and the only person drafted into the nfl to have flown into space. Good morning to All Of You rock stars. Morgan, you were there on site. They are astronauts well hear from them in about an hour and what a morning its been for them. Understanding, hallie, 20 miles away from the Launch Site the middle of the West Texas desert and it was so incredibly fitting to see this take place here on the frontier as bezos traded it for another, crossing that line officially entering Outer Space and three to four minutes of weightlessness in this flight, that is right now it seems that everything went absolutely according to plan. To hear the liftoff in my ear and look over my shoulder a few minutes later and see that Rocket Trail going up to the sky, you dont know how that feels until you witness it firsthand and its absolutely a powerful moment to know they went to Outer Space and to come back down so successfully, to see that capsule come off of the rocket, first witness that Rocket Land on top of its pad and the three parachutes come out and to hear the audio from the four crew members inside, the glee from Wally Funk and just everyone sharing that excitement for that soft landing back in the West Texas desert, just an absolutely historic and incredible moment, and important to note that convoy from Blue Origin on standby, they were on top of that capsule, almost as soon as it landed. There was no Bulls Eye here, a lot of desert to work with so they were running up to that capsule, checking for thumbs up from every person inside there, about ever they walked outside and to see smiles, hugs and cowboy hats here in the West Texas desert. So really just we could feel a Sonic Boom and then hear two of them as they came back down to earth, and that kind of visceral moment is something very special. Hallie . Mike, special is certainly one word for it. From your Vantage Point how did today go . What were you watching for, what are your takea was, 30 minutes after that touchdown in the desert . Thanks very much for having me, Hallie Today on a special day. I was excited the way things went. Anticipation during the Launch Count is always there and i can feel it down deep inside of me as the count was going on, hoping things were going to go well for him. I have a lot of friends that work at Blue Origin and happy for them, that it all went well but i think we saw an example of how that system works. Its had 15 successful flights, first time they had people on, this was the really special one. To see the booster come back and all of this come off the way it was supposed to and the look on the faces of the newly minted astronauts on board, i think thats just sums it up. It was a really good day and hopeful for whats coming next from Blue Origin and nasa. Peggy, you spent 6635 days in space. This crew had something like three to four minutes. Still i imagine incredibly special for them, Perspective Changing which is what Jeff Bezos predicted before he lifted off this morning. Definitely is a Perspective Change i think and im excited that we have new people and new capabilities, Blue Origin and virgins capabilities getting people into suborbital Flight And Spais ex Orbital Flight and im looking for a commercial Crew Mission because it is all of the progression that is marking how we are commercializing space, not just for people to come and visit, but to use space as a tool to develop new medicines, to develop new technologies. Its going to be very exsighing and im looking forward to the future. We should note, peggy, Richard Branson has just gotten online to congratulate Jeff Bezos on the successful launch, the successful landing of this new Shepard Rocket and the capsule Carrying Bezos and the crew members. Youll be demanding the Spacex Mission to the international Space Station. Anything Spacex Or Virgin galactic could learn from down the road . I think all the missions are different so they have different objectives, different training and for axiom, the training not only involves Spacex Training and also involves the international Space Station training in order for us to have a Crew Mission that goes to the Space Station and visit the Nasa Crew operating there as well. Leland, we need to know how remarkable it is, this was automated. Unlike Virgin Galactic this month, there were no pilots involved. Can you talk what this might mean for the future of Space Travel in your view . Hallie, thanks for having me on. We have created some of the most incredible technology throughout the genesis of the Space Program that allows things like this. Spacex is docking to the international Space Station autonomously, allowing for people to get in the rocket and go like george jetson, get somewhere, get out and do their thing and get in the rocket and come home. This is a way to democratize space. Well have people getting on, they dont have to be mission specialists, dont have to be pilots or scientists. They can be people who want to get the shift in the way they see the planet. I was in space with peggy. We broke bread at 17,500 miles per hour with russians, germans, french, africanamerican, asianamerican, and i think space we all have the technological things that are wonderful to see. The other thing is the Human Connection that we have, from people All Around The World and i think we can bring that back down to the planet, so that we can get along better, using that view of space. That is often an optimistic vision and i hear you when you talk about wanting to democratize space. Youre right, you dont have to be as were seeing today a scientist and long time veteran to get into Space But you do in all likelihood have to be really, really rich, which is not sort of the most democratic way to be talking about Space Tourism, maybe what needs to happen based on the Business Model here. How do you see that changing . We have philanthropists that are giving tickets to people. Spacexs inspiration for, isaac is letting people from one woman, not hailey, i cant remember her name but she was a patient at st. Judes with brain cancer. Shes going to space to raise money to help other kids to help other people and i think that there will be more people giving their seats away. Wally funk, she flew, she didnt pay the 28 Million. There is this level of philanthropy i feel that will help give kids and others Zip Codes that never have an opportunity to raise that much money to go to space. Our better Chain Gels come forward to help more people in the democratization space. You mentioned wally function, Oliver Damon 18 years old. When i was 18 years old i wouldnt have to wear it all, strap myself into the Market And Launch past the line. What do you think this means for the next generation, mike . Older person in space, the youngest person, we saw that happen today. I think its very hopeful. Im a prover at columbia and my students are very excited about Space Travel. I got excited by the Moon Missions back in the late 60s and early 70s when i was little and that inspired me and i think the Students Today that young people that are interested in participating in Space Travel, they had a lot more options than Peggy Leland and i did. They had an opportunity to work for a Government Program but also to work at one of the other companies or Experience Space as Leland And Peggy have said in different ways. So theres a lot of options open to them and just going to keep growing so for young people, i think this must be a very exciting time. I know it is for my students. Theyre very excited about this. With good reason. Its going to bode well in the future. 82yearold Wally Funk becoming the oldest person in Space Part of that initial mercury 13 Group Back in the 60s. Shes completed her mission all these decades later. Can you talk about what this means . Wally is an enthusiastic supporter of Space Flight and now i think she has the wherewithal with enthusiasm more if its at all possible. She i think will help spread the word and communicate how special space is to every generation. Thats important for everybody to understand. Again, its about understanding that life can be changed by being in Space But besides the emotional impact of being there, i think the potential for actual utilization of space is huge and educating people about these differences is going to be important in our future. Thank you all for being with us, incredible expertise, incredible stories and a great perspective. We appreciate it, Morgan Chesky standing by in West Texas as we wait to hear from Jeff Bezos, Wally Funk and Oliver Damon. In a few minutes from now bezos joining a small club fulfilling this decades long dream to travel into space. But first before we get there, some argue its a frivolous venture. Others say it could revolutionize Space Travel, perhaps democratize it, as we just heard. We talk with a Nasa Restaurant who logged more than 680 hours in Space B what this really means, next. Each with their own vision for the next era of Space Travel, and how to get there. Lets bring in lee billings, Space Journalist for scientific american. Lee, good morning to you. Great to have you on the show on a busy morning. Talk us through not just the logistical differences but the philosophical differences between the companies and the launches weve seen from both companies, Virgin Galactic earlier this month, Blue Origin in the last hour. Theyre very different approaches. Virgin Galactics Rocket comes from a plane, launches from a plane, flies like a plane. Doesnt go as high, has about the same amount of space, lots of windows but two pilots. The blue Origin Approach is more traditional, goes up, comes down, all autonomous, no pilot, has six seats and goes higher. They have a similar viewpoint in terms of their philosophy. They open up and as you said earlier democratize access to Space Because they think its important for humanity. Also because its profitable. Thats a big question, right . If they get there, that is the joel for this. As you talk about the same vision broadly with different paths to get there, do you see down the Road Room for both companies, is it beneficial competing in the space, in pun intended. Good question. It is great, how weve gotten here. I think they do have different ways of getting there obviously. Virgin galactic is much more concerned with the Space Tourism side of things as a fundamental aspect of their business. Even though they have other aspects in flying uncrewed flights, scientific payloads to reach orbit. Blue origin has a bigger picture view, Jeff Bezos talked about having a lot of Earths Economy moving off world someday, moving our Heavy Industry off world to reduce our ecological footprint, almost utopian science fiction view. In support of that, they are working for actively to develop reusable orbital vehicles, supposed to launch late 2022, maybe 2023. Theyve been developing a Moon Lander in working with nasa on that, even though nasa has not done that to date, given that to spacex, which seems the main competitor. For the socalled, i hate to say, the average person, the Average Joe if you will who is interested in Space Travel, looking to this 28 Million Price Tag for this most recent seat for the initial option and going there is no way that that is in my plane of existence. What do you see lime time line wise, Space Tourism opening up to regular folks the way that Plane Travel is today, if ever . If ever, one thing that we have seen already discussed on this program is aspect of risk and the appetite for risk. How much do their customers have, how much does the public have for us . This continues to ramp up and seeing things like mobile flights every day, they are reusable, you are getting reaction and nominal performance and have injuries if not fatalities at some point. Is that an acceptable amount of risk from companies, acceptable amount of risk for the passengers. When the accidents inevitably happen, how will we move forward or back off and say whoa, that was a bad idea. Space tourism will remain a Niche And Fringe activity for most people predominantly wealthy people for many years to come. Lee billings, thank you for being with us, from scientific american. As always, appreciate your perspective on a big morning. Thank you. Democratic Congressman Kan. Good morning. Thank you for being with us. What are your thoughts on what weve seen . Good morning, hallie. I dont think ive heard of a bigger oxymoron talking about billionaires going up into space and using the word democratizing. Here are the facts. Amazon has refused to pay any tax in 2017 or 2018. Jeff bezos didnt pay tax two of those years and now spending millions of dollars that could have been taxed using that to go up into space. Hallie, there is a deeper problem. The Tech Leaders view the social good equated to technological Progress And Market value. Theyre missing key principles such as justice, such as liberty, such as equality, such as compassion, and the reality is that they have an unexamined view of what constitutes a good society and sometimes an arrogant view. Bezos is not a stranger to this line of criticism as you well know, congressman. I would not be surprised if he addressed it at the News Conference that were waiting for and preemptively responded to some of that when he was doing Network Interviews over the last 4 hours. Here is what he said. Of course people said look, we have so many problems here on earth and theyre right and we need to do both. Weve always done both. We need to focus on the Here And Now and we need to look to the future. Is there now some degree of scientific value, some degree of overall benefit coming out of these missions . Yes of course but who is Jeff Bezos to decide . Why does he get to decide the right balance between taking care of homeless individuals, between helping people with s. T. E. M. Education, between making science and astronauts more inclusive, and having missions into space. What is offensive he thinks a few people like him get to make these societal decisions. No, we live in a democracy. Democracies get to decide the balance. Let me share with you a bit of the libertarian perspective here from an oped responds to the criticism youre making writing the irony is that nasa takes our money to finance a Space Program that no ordinary citizen could ever hope to access yet when branson, musk and bezos spend their own wealth with the explicit goal of one Day Elg Evercheaper tickets to allcomers, that is when congressmen get grumpy. Im not saying youre the congressman theyre talking about but alluding to the pushback youre talking about here. What say you . Last i heard cost 28 Million. I dont see how thats democratizing access to space. If they want to argue nasa should try to open up Space Flights to the american people, lets have that conversation and we can try to democratize access to the Space Program in a responsible way. My problem is, why do bezos and a few of his friends get to make these decisions, and why are they using money that should have been used to pay taxes . Thats offensive. Congressman roh khanna, thanks for joining us on this special coverage of the blue orin launch. Coming up, well hear directly from Jeff Bezos and more plus the rest of the crew live. Were also going to talk with somebody who has been on four Space Shuttle missions, with what this really means for the future of Space Travel. Thats Coming Up. Not all 5g Networks are created equal. Tmobile americas largest, fastest, most reliable 5g network. Like many people with moderate to severe Ulcerative Colitis or crohns disease, i was there. Be right back. But my symptoms were keeping me from where i needed to be. So i talked to my doctor and learned humira is the 1 prescribed biologic for people with uc or crohns disease. And humira helps people achieve remission that can last, so you can experience few or no symptoms. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections. Serious and sometimes fatal infections, including tuberculosis, and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened, as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Be there for you and them. Ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, remission is possible. Pretty taxing. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. And, uh, i found cerebral. Cerebral is an app that combines Medication Management and behavioral care all in one nice package. Join today for just 30 at getcerebral. Com. We are back and expected to hear from Jeff Bezos live on msnbc joined by three other astronauts on board with more on what it was like for the few minutes in space. We got a glimpse in real time as the flight was happen on the Blue Origin new Shepard Rocket. Listen. Woo oh, wow. Look out the window. Oh, wow. Craig, youve been watching this live on Nbc News from the today show. It was like a tenminute and 10 or 20second flight from liftoff to touchdown. So compelling, right . So compelling. The minutes flew when you hear the excitement in their voices there. One of the cool things about these gigs of ours we get a front Row Seat to history and this morning, was one of those. We got to see history in the making. Tom costello literally Front Row near the texas Launch Site. Mr. Costello, i know youve got to catch that Bus And Head over to that News Conference, set to start roughly 30 minutes from now. Well hear from Jeff Bezos and his brother and the two others who were part of history. From our Vantage Point, tom, it seemed to go off without a hitch, no . It was picture perfect. Unmanned test flights before today they had a high degree of confidence this would go well and certainly did from the moment they lit the torch underneath the rocket and started akseling to mach 3. 5 and the Capsule Peeling away from the rocket headed to the ultimate apogee, 60 miles high, considered by almost everybody into space and the perfect descent under three parachutes and coming back down, landing ever so gently because the parachutes slow that down, the spacecraft, so does a retrorocket that fires underneath to slow it down as it settles into the dust. Craig and i were talking on Nbc News special report, this is not just about although it seems like it, not just about a Billionaire Spending billions of dollars to put together this program as Richard Branson did with Virgin Galactic. It may be a wright Brothers Moment for much as you think how this changes the world going forward. Opening up Space Travel to everyday people. The first ceos of airlines, i got an idea, put paying passengers on airplanes. Thats what this is, can they get paying passengers to get on the flights to make It Worth the price. 11 minutes, thats what you get. I dont know how much money they spend, a half million or so for a Ride And 11minute Joy Ride up and back from Space Or Edge of space. Well check in with you after the News Conference there set to start again roughly 30 minutes from now were told. Someone who logged more than 680 hours in space, Major General Charles Boldin, a former nasa astronaut, former Nasa Administrator under president obama, a kid growing up in columbia, South Carolina he was quite the idol, c. A. Johnson graduate. I went to High School a few miles away but can attest in fact there was no One Cooler than Charles Boldin for this 7yearold. General, it is such an honor to see you and get your perspective. Honor to be with you as a fellow South Carolinian. Youre my hero, from columbia, i think you can understand that. General, as someone who has been on four Space Shuttle missions let me start by getting your reaction to what we have seen unfold oerve the last hour, none piloted aircraft filled with four civilians piercing earths blanket. Did you ever think youd see something like this . I did. I was the healthy skeptic when i became the Nasa Administrator. If you told me wed be doing this now, i would have said im not sure. Over time i have become a true believer. Its important for the commercial sector or entrepreneurs to work together with government to enable Nasa And International Partners to do the big risky things like exploration, but this was a very important step for the u. S. Today, contrary to what a lot of people will say. Im not hard over because its a billionaire. General, its hallie jackson. I may not be a South Carolinian but also a fan, just to get in on that kernel of love there. Im glad youre with us. I have to tell our viewers breaking news that we can share right now On The Air live, The Box in the screen, Stephanie Ruehl talking with the bezos brothers. She has just wrapped that interview minutes after they got off the capsule. This is special, before the News Conference well see. Well play that one on two interview out the second that we get it back in house. Im told by our team in our Control Room this has just wrapped. Were excited to see what steph has heard from these two men after the historic flight. I want to know that is what might be playing out potentially interrupting you, sir, if we need to, to talk about it here. I want to ask you, you and craig are talking about, you describe how you were a bit of a skeptic when it came to the idea of Space Tourism and the next Fran Tier opening up. One thing weve heard from other experts who have been on a broadcast this morning is the idea of Risk Management and that being a important potential concern. Can you talk about ways you see the private public partnership strengthening, areas you think the government and private companies could maybe work better together in this next sort of frontier, if you wil you had Peggy Whitson and Mike Massimino. Peggy was chief of the Astronaut Office and traveled with me internationally quite a bit to try to get other countries involved in human Space Flight. The advantage in the commercial sector, they have through many battles with nasa to reach agreements on Safety Standards and engineering standards and Human Rating standards and so thats what eventually gave me the confidence that these guys could really do what they said they could do. Im comfortable we have the right Safety Engineering and Human Standards in place and as long as we make them comply, well be okay. There will be accidents down the road, this is not without risk but we have to do all we can to avoid them for as long as we can. We cant stop when that unfortunate day comes. General, i want to get your take on one of the chief criticisms of, and this has been a criticism of just traveling into space. The traditional shuttles were launched, this idea that there are so many problems, myriad of problems here on earth and here you have two billionaires spending all this money to take their friends and many cases to take friends into the skies when there are so many other things they could be spending that money here on earth to help people. Whats your response to that ageold criticism . Not a dime has been spent in space. You ask the people from van horn, texas or any other place where the commercial Space Sector has settled, theyre pretty happy because theyre seeing Revenue Inflow into the their economy, seeing development come. Thats the american capitalist system. If we dont like it, we it try another system. Im not bothered by the fact we have billionaires putting their own money into this. Now i just saw Congressman Ro Khanna earlier. If he doesnt like the fact somebodys not paying taxes, change the law or enforce the law. Thats their job. I know were talking about Space But there are some important things going on in the country right now and we need the congress to get their act together. Otherwise the space things we think are making life better on the planet are for naught. We are the shining city on the hill. If the Congress Cant Act like it, we need a new congress, to be quite honest. Im frustrated and i know this is space were talking about but space needs things right on the planet. It begins with the people in congress who are being critical of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk and others, they make the laws and change them and can collect taxes. Theyre trying to cast responsibility off onto people like me and bezos and were doing our job. They need do theirs. That is a message delivered loud and clear, general, to members of congress here in washington. I want to as you talk about space, let me ask you to if you can look down the road into the future here. The spector of the jetsons has been raised on the broadcast this morning. One of the things Jeff Bezos talked about is having this vision of a future where millions of people are living and working in space to benefit earth. Is that pieinthesky, generations and generations down the road or is that a time frame that is possible, maybe within our kids lifetimes . As i said, im sort of the skeptic but being realistic, i dont see colonization, and i hate the word to be quite honest but i dont see that happening in my life time. I think somewhere down the road if we can get our act together here on the planet, you will see normal, everyday people living and working in space for periods of time. Some in low earth orbit, some on the lunar surface and lunar orbit. I believe by the next decade and the decade of the 2030s, well have humans in the martian environment and probably on the surface of mars but those are going to be, you know, exploration people, who go there for months at a time maybe, but not long, longterm in the next few generations of people. One of the things ive always enjoyed about general boldin is you dont see him every day popping up on tv, on social media. When you see and hear from general Charles Boldin, its a special day. Before i let you go, general, you are fewer than 600 people who have made that trip into space. Whats it like on the ascent . Whats it like on the descent . What do you see . How do you feel . Two things i always used to describe it. One is the sense of feel, the other is the sense of sight. The sense of sight is the one Thats Mind boggling because you see the planet from a perspective as you said less than 600 people have had. That is lifechanging and thats what Jeff Bezos said before he flew. I want to see what it does to my life, when i have an opportunity to view the planet from this perspective. Unless hes mighty different, my guess is he understands the environment, i think his life was probably changed from having that perspective. The good thing about this flight was they got an opportunity to go through the changing field being pushed back in your seat at liftoff, being weightless and pushing back into earth feeling gravity on. Simplistically put, its awesome. Major general charles bolden, awesome indeed, sir, thank you as well. General, thank you, thank you. Thank you to you, too. Honor to be here with you spending this time. It is an honor to be with both of you. Craig Malvin Coanchor of our coverage on Msnbc Reports. Craig, we talked about it and told our viewers this was happening. Stephanie ruehl talking with the bezos brothers minutes after they touched down. This is your first look On The Air on Msnbc Reports before this News Conference happened. I think we have the tape. Lets roll it p jeff know ruhle and the bezos brothers now. Hey, wasnt that kind of ride. I like her. So happy for you. I mean, im so i know, im so happy for you. Just, okay, ready . Sorry. Here we go. Jeff bezos, you are an astronaut now. How does it feel . Its amazing. You know, there are no words. It was a perfect mission. Im not talented to put it into words the accelerating g force, being pushed back into the seat and youre suddenly floating. Feels like surprisingly natural. Effortless. You feel comfortable. Its not weird at all. Its very nice. Reporter mark, you have spent your whole life with this man in West Texas. You spent time on your Grandfathers Farm playing space cowboys but this is so much more than boys who wanted to be astronauts. Yes. Your brother has been determined to advance Space Travel. I want to know, what did it feel like to be up there together when you locked eyes . It was pretty special. I mean, first of all, it just meant a tremendous amount to me to be able to represent my Mom And Dad and our sister, christina, being there to celebrate a lifelong dream come true. We decided to a little hi mom in zero g. One of us was upside down. We dont know if it came out. We have to go again if we got it wrong. Reporter this was your dream but for the millions of americans watching this, who are saying this is a Joy Ride, it has nothing to do with me. Yes. Reporter what did you experience that matters to all americans . Well, listen. We have to build a road to space so that our kids and their kids can build a future. We live on this beautiful planet. We saw this. You cant imagine how thin the atmosphere is when you see it from space. It looks so big, feels like this atmosphere is huge and we can disregard it and treat it poorly. You get up there and see how tiny it is and fragile it is, we need to take all Heavy Industry, all polluting industry and move it into space and keep earth as this beautiful gem of a planet that it is. Thats going to take decades and decades to achieve, but you have to start, big things start with small steps and we need reusable Rocket Vehicles and we need to practice with them, and thats what this Subor Bittal Tourism allows us to do, to practice over and gefr. This is the very beginning of that. Is there anything now that you didnt think yesterday but now youre saying im going to do this. This is the change thats going to happen next. So for me, it reinforces my commitment to the Climate Change, to the environment, i think if you look at it, we have too much villification in society today, not enough unity, sovillifiers, you look out at the planet, there are no borders. Its one planet and we share it and its fragile. Reporter until now, Space Exploration has been a passion of yours but not your day job. True. Reporter does that Change Today . Does this become your lifes work . This and the bezos earth fight, the Climate Change foundation. Thats going to be the focus of my work. Reporter maybe my hardest question, your brother just took you to space. What are you giving him for christmas . Look, i already let the guy take me to space. What more do i need to do for this man . Reporter obviously as fathers, when you were up there, i talked to you yesterday, im cool. Im fine. Were you panicked . No, i was never panicked. I got emotional Sitting Waiting for the launch and just thinking about my kids and my wife and everything. It was a profound moment and the training that we went through was fantastic for anything that might be off nominal but it was a perfect flight, and boy, what an adventure. It was unbelievable. Some of our Family Members were a little anxious, but they flipped between wanting to stow board in our Carry Luggage and wanting to stop us from going, but you know, i think thats natural. It was a perfectly nominal mission. It was so much fun and meaningful, too. When are you doing it, next . How about tomorrow . Reporter seriously, how soon . I want to fly a bunch of people so im not going to go next. Im saving seats for others but i want to go again. Reporter do you wish your grandfather could have seen this . Hell yes. We talked about that. Reporter is he the one person you thought of up there . Your family has a history of Space Exploration, space work. I definitely thought about pop. We said that in the capsule. Wed love to have him. He would have been the one like most excited by this and most proud of this and yeah, we miss him reporter thank you both so much. Congratulations. Lets take it back. I know we have to leave. I know, i know. Jeff bezos, Mark Bezos, Stephanie Ruehl, scoring that out of this world exclusive, stephanie joining us now from that desert in West Texas. Steph, i understand before you got to catch up with your old friend there, you also saw the launch as it happened. What was it like . Not as a journalist but as a regular person, seeing something really cool, that front Row Seat to history. Reporter as a human . Yes. Reporter craig, it was kra extraordinary and before we talk about conflict, what are they doing, should they do it, actually standing here, watching it, hearing the noise, feeling it, it was extraordinary. It was this moment like you felt like you were a little kid watching it on tv, saying i cannot believe this is happening. Its a kind of thing that makes kids want to devote themselves to studying science and math. My kids called me right after. It was amazing to be here, but i also thought about their families, right, their friends who were here. Yesterday i spoke before my interview to Mark Bezos, spoke to his wife. Weve been planning for it and working on this. When you see that rocket go up, when you see it go out of sight, suddenly you have that moment of absolute panic, and then when you saw it come down, it was just, you know, were at a time in this country were so quick to fight, so quick to criticize each other. Right there, you just saw absolute awesomeness, and that is science, nation, technology commitment. It was amaamazing. Steph, you scored that interview we just watched unfold and play out on msnbc and i have to tell you, like the giddiness was almost palpable coming from the two brothers, one who dreamt about Space Travel forever decades here. Did you get the sense talking to them in person minutes after they stepped out of the capsule that they were still on that adrenalin high a little bit . Reporter without a doubt. I mean, absolute euphoria. I saw their parents on the way in. They were Breathing A Sigh of relief but they were overjoyed. Jeff bezos is as determined as they come, andsolute euphoria. I saw their parents on the way in. They were Breathing A Sight of relief, but they were overjoyed. Jeff bezos is as a determined as they come. You could say lots of people said since they were a kid they would like to be an astronaut. No, since his High Schooler. He said the future of this Plan Et relies on man, not being on earth. We need a backup plan. He manifested that. Whats really interesting is, yes, how did he do all this . Because of amazon. Amazon made him the richest man in the world. But amazon is not his passion. Space is. What was interesting when i said to him, space has always been your passion, now is it going to be your lifes work, he said without a doubt. There was no mention of amazon. There was no mention of ecommerce, retail. And he set his mind to change ing the Retail Business and one of the three of us right now probably has an amazon in front of our front doors. He changed retail. He could be in a moment where he changes space. A Couple Amazon boxes. Steph, first of all, just to see the two brothers interacting for All Of Us that has a kid brother, that dynamic is so genuine. I loved your question about what mark is going to get him for christmas. You have to wonder what can mark ever get Jeff Bezos for christmas that he doesnt already have. But moving forward. I know Mark Bezos pretty well. Hes one of the leading minds in the world of philanthropy. He does extraordinary things you dont hear about. But to just watch these brothers, think about your true passion in life. Experiencing the american dream, The Ultimate American Dream with your brother, yes, youre looking out the window at earth behind you, but youre looking in your brothers eyes who you have known since the day he was born. I thought it was interesing when you asked Jeff Bezos when does he want to go up again. Had said tomorrow. But not really, i want other people to experience this. Do you have any sense. Had said about airplanes, years and years ago, and we have a history as a country around the world, of adventurous, wealthy, wealthy people using their resources to make investments that seem like moon shots. Then they become huge pars of our lives. Fpz. Spending less and less money on Space Travel. They filled in this void when other countries like Russia And China continue to spends a lot of money. So in some ways, its actually filling in where taxpayer dollars arent going anymore. To your point about Mark Bezos not being a slouch, in addition to running the family foundation, hes a Volunteer Firefighter as well. Steph, thank you so much for that exclusive conversation with the bezos brothers. Back with us dr. May jim, who was the first africanamerican woman in space. And also the head of the 100year starship project. Your final thoughts as we leave the News Conference. I can say its about making sure we have the capacity for travel within the next 100 dwreerz years. Thats Building Capability that we can use here on earth. Its not about the launch. Its about using space as a radical Plat Tomorrow to really push us. The dream of Space Exploration is not new. Its something that has been part of humanity since we were here. We looked up at the stars and wondered what they were. We have it all want odd to go, but there was part of who we are. And so i think its something that moves forward. This is another chapter. But i also would like to add that everything that were seeing today, a really wonderful launch, incredible engineering, its built on the foundation of knowledge, capacity, that started and was manifested with Government Money and regular citizens money. So a little bit different than Airplane Flight and other things, because we have already done that. We know how to do those. And what the commercial folks have done is to really do some refinement on the engineering. Its really important to me that we understand that this is part of All Of Us. When we started putting together with the funding, everyone wants to be involved. Its something we need to share as a society and as a world and understand that we get to figure out where this goes. Standby for us if you can. Were going to reset for a quick Moment Youll Stick with our coverage. If you arent, you are now. Dont go far. Were going to take a quick break. Well continue our special coverage of todays space launch. That News Conference that bezos News Conference Coming Up here live on msnbc in a few moments. S maybe i didnt love you quite as often as i could have were delivering for the earth. By investing in more electric vehicles, reusable packaging, and carbon capture research.
