While all states are seeing upticks in new cases, the cdc says, just four states, california, texas, missouri and florida, now account for more than 40 of all cases this past week. One in five new cases in our country is occurring in the state of florida, alone. This is not where the biden administration expected to be after an intensive mass vaccine campaign. Right now, fewer than 50 of the total u. S. Population is fully vaccinated. And the numbers of people getting shots continues to fall. The White House is now focused on fighting misinformation about the vaccines. And they were calling out the tech companies, today. Today, President Biden had sharp words in fact, for facebook. Whats your message to platforms like facebook . Theyre killing people. I mean really, look, the only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated. And theyre killing people. G as you might have heard earlier. Facebook responded in a statement which reads quote, more than two or Two Billion people have reviewed authoritative information about covid19 on facebook, which is more than any other place on the internet. More than 3. 3 Million americans have also use our Vaccine Finder to find it where and how to get a vaccine. The facts show that facebook is helping save lives, period. This of course, has become instantly political. Some on the right are cuesing the White House of trying to stifle and monitor facebook and its users. Here is part of an exchange that took Place Today between pressing Qatari Jen Psaki and the fox News Correspondent. Carlo how long has the administration been spying on Peoples Facebook profiles, looking for a Vaccine Misinformation . That it was quite an inaccurate question this is publicly open information. People sharing information online. Just as you are all Reporting Information on your new stations. Do they know that somebody at the surgeon Generals Office is going through their profile . These are people who are Sharing Information On Public Platforms on facebook. Information that is inaccurate. Our biggest concern, and i frankly think it should be your biggest concern, is the number of people who are dying around the country, because they are getting this information. Is there any concern that things you are trying to block or have taken down, my someday turned out to be we dont take anything out. We dont block anything. We dont blo and thats aboutt went to one day. Meanwhile, the administration has sent teams out into the field to try to get a handle on these latest outbreaks. At the or the quest of the nevada governor, we are deploying more than 100 people to the state to help enhance Vaccine Access Support Vaccine Outreach efforts. Were providing cdcs technical expertise, including genetic sequencing, Dayton Analysis and Briggs Response to missouri. To help the state in its response. Political pointing out tonight, the challenge for the biden administration noting that outreach may be less than welcome in some parts of our country. Where antifacts and antigovernment sentiment run high. One other part of the world experiencing a Virus Spike is tokyo. Thats bad news because the Summer Olympics are set to begin a week from today. Authorities there say cases are climbing. The biggest surge in six months, in fact. Number of arriving athletes have already tested positive. Also tonight, we are getting a new look at the relationship between Donald Trump and his last attorney general, Bill Barr. And their new book called, i alone can fix it, pulitzer prizewinning Reporters Color Carol letting and fill record of the Washington Post, right about Barrs Realization in spring of 2020, that trump was squandering his chances for reelection. They write it this way quote, i feel you are going to lose the election, barr said. I feel you are actually losing touch with your own base. The only reason you won last time, Mister President , is because of the grab them by the comment. Barr said. According to the account he shared with others. It actually scared you enough to listen to kellyanne. And for the last several weeks youve behave yourself and you won by a hair. This time its different. You cannot wait until The End. Its about you and your turning off enough people to lose this election. Trump was silent, the authors right. Not interrupting or trying to regain the floor as he usually. Did as Bars Spiel came to an end. Trump knotted and said he appreciated the advice. Today, trump released a response that reads in part quote, Bill Barr never once told me he thought i was going to lose the election. In fact, it was quite the opposite. He told me that i should win. With that, lets bring in our lead off guests on this friday night. Susan page, Veteran Eugene daniels, white House Correspondent for politico. And doctor vin gupta, critical Care Pulmonologist out of seattle. Attle. Hes also of the faculty at the university of Washington Institute for health metrics and evaluation. Notably good Doctor Gupta Finish moderating a seminar at the aspen and securing the publics trust. That is why i would like to begin with you, doc. What did you share with the people there. And what did you tell them was your Number One concern right now . Brian, good evening. Thank you as always for having me. The main thesis out here is we can diagnose, technique companies, or bad actors out there putting bad information. But how do we actually train armies of future Health Care professionals . Young Public Health professionals to actually communicate simply and effectively to the people. That has been a big focus at the Aspen Institute and elsewhere. Ill say, the reason i have to be here, is because academic medical centers and medical schools are not doing. It we have a fundamental imbalance between what the public is demanding, clear, concise, not confusing Public Health information. And what our trainees in medicine and Public Health are actually getting in training. They are not getting how to actually talk to the lay public and clear, simple terms. They are getting told well talk in fancy acronyms. Sound really complicated and you will be rewarded. So were trying to learn that. Were trying to build that crisis communication capability. We can impugn facebook as much as we want, but unless we hold accountable the andes in white coats, to give shelter and enable Nonsense Information on internet platforms. Unless we hold them accountable and say, you know what, just like rudy giuliani, you will lose your license if you continue to do this. If theyre not consequences, brian, its not going to matter how many times we died knows a problem. There needs to be consequence. Oblem. Indeed. We saw some of that this week unplayable platforms. Susan, lets talk about the intersection of Public Health and politics. Talk about the political challenge a. But be, the disappointment for the biden administration that has been in search of that elusive 70 vaccination goal. Health care crisis, certainly, with the rise of once again of covid. A political problem as well. You can see how frustrated the White House is with the president came over and accuse facebook of killing people by not being more aggressive about taking down misinformation. The White House is doing a lot of things white right. They there are vaccines that are widely available. Anybody who wants a vaccine can get one and get a free. And yet we have a significant part of the american population refusing to do that. And a lot of them are in states that biden lost, that trump won. Where the suspicion of the government in general, and of the biden administration in particular, is pretty high. How do you convince them to take the vaccine . And that is something that President Biden needs to do to succeed as president. The pandemic is job one for the biden administration. Eugene, that brings us to you. Your beat at the White House. Talk about the level of concern over this surge. Coupled with this campaign they started fighting this week, against misinformation. Me and my colleague natasha wrote a story this week about this. That the administration was going to start looking at misinformation and disinformation. More importantly, more aggressively talking about it. They started to do that this week. Because last week, i was in the White House talking to officials there and there was all saying the same thing. They were very concerned about what they were hearing in the media. They were concerned that rightwing media had hit the clutch on even more disinformation and misinformation. On the vaccines, talking about it even more in a way that they were going to use the Door To door. The government is going to come Door To Door To give you a vaccine. That is not what is going on. So theyre really concerned about it and the only thing that they can do is from the Bully Pulpit. With John Psaki saying that theyre working on this. Even her the Fox News reporters still asking questions that led you to believe, and if youre someone if theyre already people believing some of these things, you see they think there is more of a problem The Way the questions are asked. Theyre very concerned about. It theres only so much they can do. Right now, the concentration is continuing to do use doctors. Continuing to use Health Experts to try to dispel some of this. And working with some of Facebook And Twitter on pulling things down. Just on facebook with the statement that they gave saying that people are able to use the facebook tools to find a vaccine. That doesnt change the fact that historically, misinformation lives on facebook. Quite a bit beshear. You can look yourself and see how much it is sheer. It is not something you need a scientific agreed to figure out. It happens often. A happened in all over our elections in 2016. And its happening both of those things can be true. And the administration is going to have to figure out what they can do working with the Social Media Companies and also using the Bully Pulpit to move some of these things along. Because it does and will, and has, cost lives. Eugene, your so right. The Facebook Statement notably digs at the number of people who have found their misinformation on the pages of facebook. Doctor gupta, Headline Tonight from susans publication. Usa today. The Fourth Wave of covid19 cases a here. Will we escape the uks feet . Its too soon to know. Tell me doc, what kinds of patients are walking into your er in seattle these days. And i hesitate to ask your prediction for fall. Brian, theyre primarily young. Twenties, thirties, unvaccinated. Theyre coming in to seek medical care. Whether they come and see a dog like me, and icu dot, that depends. Usually though, i think young people requiring 100 percent oxygen. Four i probably tired out your audience showing xrays. Xrays of these patients, otherwise healthy, are filled with post from covid. Theyre not clear with you. Thats Number One. I would say just two feet off what Eugene And Susan have said, were talking about disinformation and misinformation, but theres also just confusing information that exists. I look at l. A. County, for example. That decided to do an indoor mask mandate. But with all due respect, i understand wanting to err on the side of caution. But when you make a move like that thats counter to what the cdc has put out there, you have to have sides to back it up. What do they have . They have 60 plus one vaccination rate. Test positivity, 3 or less. Their hospitals are not stress right now from folk covid. The reason i say this is when it comes to winter, were gonna have regional surges in places that are not vaccinated. The public needs to feel like Public Health officials are making moves based on science. I just dont feel like that exist in l. A. County. So theres a lot of people out there saying why are they doing that. So reflects, is not based on science. Why . Its confusing and i think thats leading into all of the hesitancy that exists. Back over to you. Two questions, especially in your role as an author of political nonfiction. How on guard should we continue to be for episodes of people looking to burnish recently strained reputations during the trump years. The quotes that make Bill Barr look good. Spending hours to get her dad to speak of one six. The chairman of the joint so of staff give people a Reading Guide to how this works and why wishing to blame the authors who are interviewing these folks . Put everything in context, in the context of what people say now they were doing behind the scenes with what they were doing in public. As they were doing things in public that advanced and enabled attacks on our democracy, that should not be forgotten even if there is a credible account trying to do something behind the scenes. One thing that this surprise me, people trying to burnish their reputations. A lot of people doubled down on what they did during the trump administration, and the support for former president trump. Now in ways i found surprising since the January 6th attacks that we havent seen more of these efforts, its more surprising than we have seen some of them to me. Its a good bet those burnishing their Trump Reputation face a primary challenger in 2022. Susan, final question about the book business. The three books out, there is a fourth on The Way. Are any of these details more striking to you then anything else weve accepted this week . I find them shocking but not surprising because they are consistent with the reporting that was being done Day Today during the trump administration. I do think the actions of a Fuel Individuals kept us from a worse consequence than we had as a country on January 6th and since the election. That is of some concern. If we are counting on the chairman, and the joint chiefs to do some planning against the Military Crew and they do that, is that the time of robust Check And Balance that we have learned about in Civics Class in 73 . Is that something we can rely on if something like this should happen again . Food for thought theyre there. What does Joe Biden Hope to emerge from the following week with . He hopes to have some Infrastructure Bills kind of written and done with, and make sure he keeps the caucus together of his. They are working on the 3. 5 trillion catch all of Human Infrastructure they have been calling it. They are working to figure out reasons this president aims for a massive historic bill that would reshape the economy and how people live and get rid of poverty in precluded the college. If he can do it, its huge. Will he be able to keep sanders and mansion in line on 3. 5 trillion dollars on whether that will happen . The political things behind the scene a fascinating because the 50 50 split in the senate. The house doesnt have a lot to work with either. There is a lot of Hand Wringing and characteristics the president will have to do to make this work out. I think he is hoping to have his bipartisan deals ready to go and 3. 5 trillion Dollar Bill at the very least. To our viewers youve been gray. Susan page, eugene daniels, Doctor Van Gupta out in aspen, thank you for you three starting us off. Coming, up a week of stunning revelations of the final days of the trump presidency. Two of our strongest man standing by to see what we have finally learned. The takeaways. And the virus tearing at the fabric of our country. No, not that virus. Award making Filmmaker Ken burns is here to share his fears what he calls the Human Virus of lying and misinformation. That one. The 11th Hour is getting underway on the final Week Night of the week. Night of the week. Ive been telling everyone, the secret to great teeth. Is having healthy gums. New crest advanced gum restore. Detoxifies below the gum line, and restores by helping heal gums in as little as seven days. Crest. The 1 Toothpaste Brand in america. Like you, my hands are everything to me. But i was diagnosed with dupuytrens contracture. And it got to the point where things i took for granted got tougher to do. Thought surgery was my only option. Turns out i was wrong. Its wireless so good, it keeps one upping itself. This week, we have heard sending accounts of the final days of the trump White House from three new books. Among the many shocking reports, pulitzer prizewinning journalist phil rocker, Carol Lanning Write that joint Chief Chairman Mark milley worried about a coup attempt, in realtime. Once trump refused to concede the election. Back with us tonight, don founder of the national Voter Protection Action and Bill Crystal, author, writer, thinker. Gentlemen, good evening to you both. Bill, lets talk about dissonance. Given your experience in washington, where you have come to know all the players very well. Do upstanding members of the republican caucus in the senate, lets pick three names. Thune, barrasso, cornyn. Do they quietly read these books, all or part . And it does it just go in the cognitive Dissonance Pile . Will anyone read them The Way you read them, looking for warnings about where we are now and where we might be tomorrow . Well, these books have been well publicized this week. We havent heard much from them. Publicly thanked General Milley for standing up for the Rule Of Law and the constitution. And arranging things to make it harder for Donald Trump and his minions to get away with. I would say if you pull the republican electorate right now, which is getting no guidance of course, from their senior elected officials on this, theyre probably with trump, not really. You know . Think of the contrast. Someone said what about richard nixon, we recovered from that the sincerity is that the republican party did not go around in 1975, 1976, saying nixon was right. Doing obeisance to him. They were wronged, they were traitors. Anyone who stepped to nixon suffered for it. So, we have a terrible situation. We know what happened now in, december, january. Its terrible. We have a party that is not going to repudiated. And indeed, that Kevin Mccarthy visited Donald Trump this week. Most elected officials on the trump train. And then the others are just quite. So, i think its not just alarming about what we learned is not just alarming about december and january. Its about alarming about today and about the future. Don, bill raises a great point. In the Post Nixon years, The Party was intent on rebuilding. And those who were still alive to tell the tale rallied around Gerald Ford and the larger effort. What do you think, and all of these blocks, in all of the experts excerpts that have been out this week, will any of it impact republicans . Remembering of course, this was hardly a president in sync with his party. Right, bill is far on. I see where youre going here. But i think it is time we smoke some sad truth. Ive known you for a couple of weeks now, brian, and ill talk to you as i would any one in a barbershop. The reality is, todays republican party is not that of Bill Crystal or william f buckley. A really, any type of ideological intellectual underpinning. The defining aspect of todays republican party is its Members Willingness to uphold white, preacher are coal supremacy. Thats what this is about. And Donald Trump is the avatar for the. Its not about christianity. If it was, ted Cruz Or Exam term would be their nominee. Its not about small government. If it were, would be their guy. Its not about taxation or economic theory, or anything like that. This is about a couple of Peoples Willingness to hold on to white, male, patriarchal supremacy. And i really have a hard time finding about what is the common connective tissue. What is the unifying thread other than that. Look at the policy happening on the state and local level, and even at the national level. The only discernible policy is United Push to keep other folks from voting, so that we can maintain these patriarchal policies. So, it is really time that we stop looking for the thing that will make them to finally break from trump. There is nothing that will make them break from trump, because trump is the leader in maintaining the one unifying theology right now. So, bill, after that injection of reality from don, how important is it to you to find out what was going on on the inside. For example, on one six, knowing that the answer to that will fall into two buckets red and blue. Still important for some people, i think, who are wavering. There will some people who will change their mind after all the shame. Certainly wasnt aware and some of us were. Royal thats not her position now. Three, five, 7 of the electorate moved over because of more clarity about what trump didnt do an january six. Thats one thing that has come out of the books that hasnt gotten as much attention. Trump was President Of The United States the. Capitalist stormed. Trump did nothing. Nothing. Any president and this kind of magnitude of something that is happening. What does he do . He goes to the situation room. He calls the secretary of defense. Home at security, justice department. He puts everyone on the job. This has to stop and stops immediately. Trump says, not just his personal statements. He just didnt act as president. Why not . Because as he said, on the side of those rioting in the capital. And those attacking the capitol. Not on the side of those defending the capitol. So, maybe as that becomes clear and affects a few to rodgers and a few more republican elected officials. Right . But i wouldnt don, unfair as it is, i need about 60 seconds of brilliance. Have the texas democrats taught anything to the senate democrats in your view, this week . Texas democrats had a wonderful week. But unfortunately, its tbd. I hope thats democrat democrats have learned something from the texas democrats have certainly shown the nation that we will disrupt in the face of injustice. And number two, you have a duty to tell people about. It im glad that they will be appearing on this network or whenever airs. Im glad to see all the individual members talk about their stories. You have a duty to tell people while youre doing what youre doing. Why youre standing up. Why the Texas Republican Party and national republican parties at activities in Voter Suppression and Election Malfeasance is wrong. I hope that senate democrats have learned that lesson. But we will see in the next month, proceeding through this august recess. Thank you for that mention. That Jonathan Kaye Part interview and barred cast is right before us monday night, 10 00 eastern, 7 00 west coast. Don callaway, by The Way, Go To little crystal, gentlemen. Well keep doing this. Thank you both for coming by. Coming up for us, he warns efforts to revise or rewrite our history are the greatest threat to our republic effort. The award winning Documentary Filmmaker can burn caught our attention not to long ago. During an interview with the Washington Post he said, he is very worried about our country and when he calls a hypersensitivity to our Nations History and its connections to the president. You sums it up quote back with us is Ken Burns, the closest thing we have to a national storyteller. Chronicler of the american story for over 40 years, as Producer Documentarian hes handed us down our vietnam war, our national parks, our national pastime. My friend, lets start here, with two men who you chronicled along The Way. I see the desire to shutting peoples legacies, and i see the desire to shame peoples legacies soft, but when does that risk covering up our history. As an example, should robert e. Lee, and will Draw Wilson face the same Modernday Cancellation . I think robert e. Lee is a really complicated one. We like to see his statues in places they should be interpreted, within battlefields. He was clear on it and i might hide behind his academic rooms, his president of Washington College which became after his death. He said make no monuments to the federal sea it will only breed bitterness. I think his nightmare has come true in that regard. I have always said most of my professional life that the most overrated president is will Draw Wilson and he deserve to hear a much more complicated and if At Times Dark Story about a person who recently brigade it a civil service and steadily after the Civil War and then integrated. There is lots to discuss. The problem is is that this is the most fraught time in the history of our republic. Just finishing a film on Benjamin Franklin, for next year, and at The End of the constitution you say brian, the story, the doors are flung open and leading the lady of philadelphia who has no right in this constitution, zero, zip, says you created a Monarchy Republic to franklin. A monarchy if he could keep. It and we are at this disparate place now in convergence of all of the viruses of the Side Effects of the Misinformation And Paranoia and lies. We writing our history and saying we are not interested in facts or truth. Not interested in the very poisonous things that make us i love your emphasis on our natural parks, national parks and making films for 40 years in the u. S. But ive also been making films about us, that two letter lower case pronoun. All the intimacy of us, and we, and your, and our. Also the majesty, the complexity, the contradiction, the controversy of the u. S. There is nothing wrong with including The Big Picture of looking at words. We think so much of the soviet style disinformation, changing your policies as issuing from texas, whose religion it is, as we know, football. On a friday night, or saturday night, the coach comes out and says, we didnt do anything right. We are terrible on defense, office they are telling it like it is. Somehow we are now certain our children cannot stand anything but a sanitized Madison Avenue Version of our history, when in fact, we are enriched by the variety of that complexity and the undertone. A week from tonight, covid permitting, the Tokyo Olympics will officially open and next week is the 25th Anniversary of one of the iconic moments in modern olympic history. It was july 19th 1996, Boxing Legend Muhammad ali emerged in front of an unknowing crowd in atlanta, while already in the groups of parkinsons. He was the champ, and remained a singular figure in our world. That moment in atlanta one of the many that Can Burns will explore in a series of virtual events, following his upcoming documentary, Muhammad Ali. Ken burns remains with us. Can, talk about the decision to make Muhammad Ali a Ken Burns subject. Well, you know, he is one of the most i mean, people throw the word iconic around. He is mythical. He is larger than life. He is as american as what women wanted us to be, filled with contoured contradictions, undertone, all the things you look for and obviously as was proclaimed, the greatest athlete of the 20th century. His life seems to touch on all the issues of the 20th century, issue still with us. Some of which we are talking about before, certainly race, and civil rights and religion, and politics, and war. Now metoo, and other things. He just seems to be at the intersection of that. Its as interesting person as ive ever come across. I had a Dinner Party with lincoln and Louis Armstrong and these moments you are talking about and is so special. We had dick who kept it a secret for all of. Us pushed it through against some folks that were still a little bit wrong about him, and it was all presumed that janet the olympian would like the torch, she takes it up there and then it emerges now surprising to us, frail and shaking, upset by parkinsons. Greatest of all, the most beautiful of all athletes. And doing it something wasnt possible that Human Beings can change and get better. We let go of whatever we hand matched the love we had all along about so many of the things great moments in all of sports as difficult as it was liberating in his encasing disease, and helps libres liberate us from things we do, good, bad. He is for this thing and i am against it. He changes his religion to the nation of is long. Its an utterly american story. There is great documentaries off the back, and sarah burns, my daughter, and even with men, and my soninlaw, we made a few films like this and we have been warning to tell a story that was suited from boyhood, birth, jim crow, Louisville Kentucky to death. Not that many mere years ago, and all he represented, all that he did, and all that he came to be. The film had just finished, brian, as you know, it was with irma standing way. It didnt do dual. This guy dies the most beloved person on his planet, which is something maybe all of us should think about tilting towards. Final question, can. Weve talked about how troubled you are about our nation and our world right now. We talked about mr. Franklin and mr. Ali. A quick final question about your process, how many future prospects do you walk around with every day on the list we all keep in our head . How many topics ahead are you normally watching and asking for a friend who is still stuck on country music. I can get you there, i will sing if you want me to, brian. We have so many projects underway. If i was given 1000 years i would not run out of projects on american history, i wont get 1000 years though but we are loading up and working on lee, and Benjamin Franklin and some of the scary conversations you are having with Don Bill A second ago are echoed in our film that we are editing, starting tomorrow. Not starting the editing, but continuing it on the u. S. , the, holocaust what we, did what we didnt, do what we knew, and what we didnt know, what we should have done, all those horrible questions. History of The American Revolution and a big thing for the 258. First nonamerican topic on leonardo da vinci. We are doing the history of Emancipation Exodus for african american life. Reconstruction of what proceeded it and what followed it. Lbj and The Great Society has watched Voting Rights and other acts of that legislative accomplishments become undone. And it is not enough time to do them all. They are all in the president , history doesnt repeat itself, but it rhymes. It is scary and it is fascinating. When you use the word process, i realize in some ways, i carry still, despite these times, a fundamental optimism. The Process And Telling of the stories, and helps makes it better. These are unprecedented times, yet you could find aspects of President S in the places that we have been before, particular the difficult places before and we have been there.
