Lingering over that Straw Poll, a report by Vanity Fair says republicans are preparing for a showdown, between trump and ron desantis, who is reporting to be considering a bid for the presidency in 2024. This is the party of trump, whether almosts in washington understand what they are up against remains to be seen. Joining me, eugene daniels, he is also an msnbc political contributor. Meghan millmilloy. And benecolens, Nbc News senior reporter. Eugene, trump just beat ron desantis, in a Straw Poll. Desantis has comfortable lead over the others. Vanity fair says Trump And Desantis appear to be on a collision course, as desantis explores a run of his own. The cpac did a second Straw Poll if trump did not run. Talk about those dynamics, the fact they feel they need to do two different polls. It shows theyre not exactly sure what Donald Trump is going to do. They have no clue. He is giving no indication. Therefore, the democrats in 2016, when it was will she or wont she with hillary clinton. The will he or wont he is making it hard for republicans to do much of anything. Ron desantis and Nikki Haley and the rest that might run in 2024, have to move slowly and have to be very, very nice to him. One of the interesting things when you talk to the trump supporters, they tend to stick with ron desantis. Hes brash and he is a little mean in public in talking to reporters and to other folks. Thats something that they are interested in. And with Donald Trump, he runs the party. You Cant Run afoul of him. Its caused the party to do all types of things, even repeat dangerous lies, say things that arent true at all, at cpac and at congress to make sure they dont Piss Off Donald Trump, and send a statement about him to someone. Old habits die hard. Lots of talks about the sevenpoint Fantastical Plan to reinstate trump as president in days. How seriously is this being taken within the Republican Party . On the trump in the Trump Part of the party, right . The base of the trump said, they really believe it. They have been surprised, at the suburban white women that saw him on the tv, probably when they expect him to believe something that is never going to happen. Possibly, dangerous. And that aspect of it is confusing. And when talking to republicans up here in washington, d. C. , behind the scenes, theyre not sure what to do with it. Again, they know they cant speak out against something like that. And they cant say that Donald Trump is not going to be president , even though hes not going to be in a few days, in a week. Unless he runs in 2024. It seems like the Republican Party is not taking it seriously or believing it. Theyre allowing it to tester. Weve seen how, when you allow lies and Conspiracy Theories to fester what happens. And we have january 6th. I hear about the sevenpoint Fantastical Plan, and to me, it has echoes of qanon. It has the same vibe. One day, in the future, not a given date, your dreams will come true. Donald trump will be the president again. All of his enemies will be arrested. Fantastical an mouse is driving this party. Theres a feeling that qanon went away because q went away. And that people that believed in qanon stopped. They are still targeted by the same algorithms. Just because its not called qanon doesnt mean theyre not trading the same outlandish Conspiracy Theories. They dont want to be called qanon supporters. Thats for certain. They are still following the insane stuff. And all of that is having an impact on the party itself. I want you to listen to what Adam Kinsinger said. The biggest enemy to the Maga World is mike pence. Mike pence was one of the most faithful people to Donald Trump. But if you turn an ounce against Donald Trump, your out of the tribe. Talk about this purging of moderate republicans from the ranks of the modern Republican Party. What does that mean for the future of the party . Yeah. What i think about first when i think about the republicans trying to purge the moderates, is that thats not their strong suit. When it purges all of the moderate members, that creates more independents and democrat voters. They can defeat the extremists or make sure the other party wins. Its easy. The republican Party Cant grow or evolve without being more inclusive, including mike pence. Were never going to get back to being a big tent party. Pro antichoice. Now, its just pro antitrump, period. My question, kind of around all of this, is why are they so focused on fighting within the party right now. Were facing so many things. Climate change, the pandemic, and were arguing about who is more republican and who has impeached the former president. Thats not leadership. Thats chasing Sound Bytes and trying to please a vocal minority. Swresing that we talk about these modern republican circles, who gets to define what moderate is in the Republican Party . Were using the term moderate to define nontrumpy. At one point it was a fiscally conservative term. If youre the former, Liz Cheney is being called a rhino, a moderate. Not only is purging moderates a bad strategic plan, now, were misapplying the term, to anyone that is not bowing to trump, that has nothing to do with policy or platform. Well look to the president s speech, On Voting Rights on tuesday. How do those two Stories Change . How are they affected by the rhetoric that were hearing . What do you hear from democrats on their sense of whether they can or cannot work with republicans . Thats the biggest question around congress right now, right . Theres members of congress that dont have faith being around their colleagues after january 6th. One member of congress moved their office away from a republican because they didnt feel safe. How do you work with people like that . From there are little Pack Pockets of moderates. You have the police reform group. One republican and one democrat on the senate side. Little things are happening. Im not sure how you get back together. The Republican Party right now is not focusing, she just said, on policy, at all. Not just bowing to the feet of trump. But also, and more importantry, spreading Conspiracy Theories and obstructing. And there isnt a sense they want to get things done. For the democrats and the White House, that want to go around and talk about the things they do and the plans, they have seen at times, lifting the political ramifications of not fighting about the untruths. Breaking quorum would be a sure way to kill the bill. Other than that, im at a loss. It is hard to do. The governor will call another session after this, to get his way. What we need, the only thing that protects texans right now, for the longterm, is federal legislation to protect our voting rights. We need the John Lewis Voting act pass. The president is going to give a big speech On Voting Rights. What is it that you want to hear from him . I want to hear this is his number one priority. He will put the prestige of the White House on the line to make this happen. This is a foundational right. The foundation of all other rights, there is something more important than passing voting Rights Legislation at the federal level. We need federal protection. Theres a federal plan to limit our voice. The Heritage Foundation has passed in eight states, texas is one of them, to estrictions. In response, we need a federal solution to this national plan. Those are the folks that we are bringing in. In texas, we focus on building up the new generation of voters, some of the most diverse electorate. I think investigators are looking closely at what the nexis and the motive of the assassination came from. The united states is pulling troops out of afghanistan, while haiti is asking for troops. What is the optics of Military Assistance at this point . I think theyre terrible. On a personal level, as a veteran, i dont think that the u. S. Government can pull out of afghanistan, while still dealing with afghan interpreters and looking to settle that question, and begin to throw u. S. Troops into haiti. Furthermore, from a legal point, theres no authority for us to send u. S. Military forces. Even if the haitians have asked for them, we have to have an authority. I go back to when u. S. Forces enter haiti in the 90s, that was under a u. S. Resolution. They are not slipped into Civil War just yet. There is still just a murder investigation. The u. S. Is going to send Covid Vaccine to haiti this week. Your sense of how a move like that can help in stabilization . We want to make sure that haiti stays stable. My understanding is that it began in a neighborhood in havana. There were a couple hundred people that took to the streets. Im told there was a sixhour power outage. They were hot and fed up. And they started marching. Speaking with Family Back in miami. Streaming the video and the protest, it then started to catch fire. We were told there were protests in at least five different neighborhoods in havana. At least that many towns across the island. The protests were around food, medicines and covid. And people were calling for freedom and liberty. Some of the people were chanting that. It is people feeling desperate, not having enough to eat. Not having income coming in because of the pandemic. Family from florida is not visiting, because of restrictions on travel. People feeling desperate. And our camera people tried to go to the neighborhood where the first protests erupted. Police and roadblocks stopped our vehicles. We saw that from the protesters live streaming the events. After that, some of the protests moved into downtown havana. And i believe that you were showing that video earlier. Earlier in the program. We saw some arrests and police criminaling the crowd. I want to ask you as someone familiar with the region, to talk about how rare what we are watching. What we are seeing, how widespread. We have not seen something like this since the mid90s. The Statute Of Limitations says you have a clock, and this will run out on when your story matters, and when youre allowed to basically say when you were harmed or something happened to you. Looking at not just the predatod but looking at the Purpose Lo but looking at the Perp Tray or and the system is a huge part of what we need to change. You talk about the organization. We have not gone far enough. Where do you want to see this organization, the Movement Build and go from here . Well, thats exactly that. I think i want more people to pay attention to the legal system to understand that, yes, its a very unfortunate that O Cosby is free now. He is able to go about his daily life in a way that many women were traumatized and livelihood was destroyed by the experiences that happened by this man. They are not able to go forward in their daily lives. To sort of pivot with that anger and that frustration and turn it towards the system that allowed this to happen in the first place. What we need to be doing is really looking at people who are leading the charge and changing the Justice System and making it much more of a, you know, victim centered system. I talk about that in a piece a n lot. A there are lawyers like Robby Caplan who is working on this ho for years. She is the cofounder of the times up legal defense fund. There are many, many women working towards it. We need to be paying Attention N to the legal system as a whole and how it has failed us. Right. So i wrote a little bit about my experience growing up as a Child Actor and being sort of the breadwinner for everyone around me. Friends and to a degree some ar family members. My relationship with my parents is extremely close and my parents are incredible people. But i understood how complicated money makes things. Especially when you are young and a woman in any kind of entertainment business. What i saw out of britney and what i see, especially with the judges latest ruling to not end her conservatorship, which is absolutely shocking to me, given the testimony she gave and the fact that so much of what she talked about sounds like a humaa rights violation. It is absolutely shocking to me to think this woman cannot have control over her own money. And actually, another thing that i havent seen people talk about enough is that it really weaponizes mental illness to any degree. We dont actually know the state of Britney Spears mental health. It is being weaponized against her in the Court Of Public Opinion and privately with this conservatorship. We have no idea what this woman is going through. She deserves to have control over her own Money And Life and body. And i recognize that to a fraction of that degree just growing up in the Business And N knowing that having money complicates things. It complicates the relationships around you. It makes things very tenuous and difficult. And unless youre ready to have a real conversation about that with the people in your life and whether or not you have healthy people in your life or not changes everything. This is why i wanted to talk to you. You wrote so eloquently about what happened to her and the yO Cosby case and seeing a connection between the cases. Youre talking about the disnance in the headlines. Tell me more. I think the dissidents is just that all of it is a spectacle. That is part of what it is. This is the 24hour news cycle. Its part of what were a part of, twitter, profiles, whatever it is that were doing. And we look at Britney Spears and we see a shiny object. And we see Bill Cosby and to a different degree but very l similarly, we also see a shiny object. But with he see that as a villain. And so its very much a problem, i think that, were out there in the media and were not talking about solutions enough. And were not talking about the hard truths of what is going on and why the actions are happening and why the experiences happen. Whether that is Britney Spears who is incredibly rich or somebody who does not have the financial resources she does. Ive gotten so many emails from women who said i experienced this my whole life. This is my life. Ive gone through this. So theyre tied.
