2024. This is the party of trump and whether democrats understand what they are up against remains to be seen. With me to discuss Eugene Daniels and megan malloy, founder, and ben collins. Eugene, trump just beat florida governor Ron Desantis 70 to 21 . Desantis would hold a comfortable lead over the others if trump did not run. Vanity fair says Trump And Desantis appear to be on a Collision Course as Desantis Explores A Run of his own. Cpac did a second Straw Poll that shows results if trump did not run. You mean, just talk to me about those dynamics, the fact that they feel they need to do two different polls. Well, it shows at once theyre not exactly sure what Donald Trump is going to do. They have no clue. He is giving them no indication, therefore kind of like the democrats in 2016 when it was like will she or wont she with hillary clinton, the will he or wont he with Donald Trump is making it really hard for republicans to do much of anything. It makes it so Ron Desantis and Nicky Hailey and the rest of them who might run in 2024 have to move slowly, have to be very, very nice to him. And one of the interesting things when you talk to some of the trump supporters is that they always pick ron not always, but they tend to pick Ron Desantis because hes brash. He has that kind of personality that Donald Trump has where hes a little mean in public in talking to reporters and the way he speaks to other folks. I think that is something theyre really interested in. And with Donald Trump, you Cant Run afoul of him. It has caused the party to do all types of things, even repeat dangerous lies, say things that arent true at all At Cpac and in congress just so they can make sure they dont Piss Off Donald Trump when he tweets not tweets sends a statement about them to someone. Old habits die hard. Eugene, lots of Talk Today about this sevenpoint Fantastical Plan to reinstate trump as president in days, not weeks. How seriously is this being taken within the Republican Party . I mean, on the trump in the Trump Part of the party, the base of the trump side, they really believe it. Weve had some of my colleagues who have gone to some of the trump rallies, and theyve been surprised at the kind of suburban white women who if you saw them on the street you probably wouldnt expect them to believe something that is, one, obviously never going to happen, possibly dangerous. That aspect of it is confusing. Even when you talk to republicans up here in washington, d. C. , even behind the scenes, theyre not sure what to do with it. They know they cant speak out against something like that. They cant say that Donald Trump is not going to be president , even though hes not going to be, in a few days, in a week, unless he runs and wins in 2024. And so it seems like the Republican Party is not taking it seriously or really believing it. They are allowing it to fester. And weve seen how when you allow lies and Conspiracy Theories to fester what happens. And thats why we have things like january 6th. Ben, as i hear about this sevenpoint fantastical point, to me it has echos of qanon. Well, its kind of the same vibe, right, that eventually one day in the future no given date, but one day in the future your dreams will come true. Donald trump will be the president again or all of his enemies will be arrested. Fantastical realism is the sort of Driving Animus right now. There is this idea that qanon went away because q went away and that all the people who followed qanon just neatly stopped caring about politics in the last six to seven months. That is not the case. They still have their influencers. They still follow the same network factions. They still go to the same forums. Theyre still targeted by the same algorithms. Just because its not called qanon anymore doesnt mean theyre not trading the same outlandish Conspiracy Theories. Look, they dont want to be called Qanon Supporters. Thats for certain. But because they know the brand is toxic. Right. They are still following the same kind of the same stuff. And megan, all of that has had an impact on the party itself. I want you to take a listen to what Congressman Adam Kinzinger said earlier today. The biggest problem in The World is not me or Liz Cheney, its mike pence. Mike pence is one of the most faithful people to Donald Trump. But if you ever turn an ounce against Donald Trump, youre out of the tribe. Talk about the purging of moderate republicans from the ranks of the moderate Republican Party. What does that mean for the future of the party . Yeah, so, what i think about first when i think about republicans trying to purge the moderates is math is definitely not their strong suit. At some point theyre going to have to realize when it purges all the moderate members, all that does is creates more independent and democratic voters. And the more aggressively it purges, the more theyre going to speak out to defeat the extremists to make sure the other party wins. The republican Party Cant grow or evolve without being more inclusive, including mike pence. Were never going to get back to being any sort of big Tent Party with these purity tests. They used to be proantichoice, proantigun, yada, yada. Now its just proantitrump. It is getting smaller and smaller. My question around all of this is why in The World are they so focused on fighting within the party right now. Were facing so many generational threats, climate change, the pandemic and were bickering about whos more republican, whos more loyal to a twiceimpeached former president. Thats not solutions. Thats chasing Sound Bites and trying to please a very vocal minority. Whats interesting in these republican circles is who gets to define what modernism is in the current Republican Party. Right now were using the term moderate to define nontrumpy. I think thats what the kinzinger and Liz Cheney is. At one point it was a socially liberal, fiscally conservative. Liz cheney is being called a rhino, a moderate, but she has a conservative voting record. Not only is it a bad plan, but were misapplying the term of moderate to anyone who isnt bowing at the altar of trump, which has nothing to do with the policy or platform, which by the way the republicans havent had in several years at this point. Eugene, i want you to just tie a few things together for me as i often ask you to do. This week were going to be looking at the infrastructure deal. Were going to be looking to the president s Speech On Voting Rights on tuesday. How do those two things how do those stories . How are they affected if at all by the rhetoric that we are hearing from cpac . What do you hear from democrats about their sense of whether they can or cannot work with republicans . Yeah, i mean, that is the biggest question around congress right now, right . There are members of congress who dont feel safe with their republican colleagues, talking and being around them after january 6th. We know one member of congress moved their office away from a republican because they didnt and their staff didnt feel safe. So, how do you work with people like that . There are little pockets of Compromise And Conversation thats happening, right . Thats how we got this kind of bipartisan infrastructure framework. You have the Police Reform Group thats a very small one republican, one democrat on the senate side. So, little things are happening, but im not sure how you get back together and if theres going to be any compromise because the Republican Party right now is not really focusing she just said on policy at all, right . Not just bowing at the feet of trump but also and probably more importantly just spreading Conspiracy Theories and obstructing. And there isnt a sense that they want to get things done. I think for democrats, for this White House who focus a lot on policy, who want to go around the country, talk about the things they do and their plans, its hard they also seem to at times be missing the political ramifications of not fighting about these untruths. And what im told sometimes is we dont want to elevate those. And it seems like theyre being elevated either way. So, how long do you let those things fester without talking about them and pushing them aside . Ben, before i let you all go, i have to ask you how is all this Qanon Stuff playing out in School Boards . Why School Boards . Look, Qanon Supporters have decided to start running in local elections because, you know, low turnout can win you an election. Theres One Qanon supporter, one of the big influencers from early on named Tracy Diaz who won a local election with like 170 votes. This is a big thing with mike flynn. Mike flynn has told Qanon Supporters told all his fans but Qanon Supporters intersected them to run for local office, to run for the local school board. They are ready to go take the bull by the corns here. They are sick of waiting for a plan to happen. Im glad you are reporting on this, ben. Thank you all. America the difference that would have made i am concerned that this bill might do the opposite of what senators claim it will do. I worry that it will undermine the legitimacy of any election, including your own, by casting doubt on whether the Election Results truly represent the will of those eligible to vote, given the barriers being suggested here. Voters in texas taking to the floor of their State Capitol arguing against a republicanled bill to limit Voting Rights. They called a Special Session to do it. One by one hundreds of texans responded, waiting their turn to speak, some up to 17 hours, to publicly oppose the restrictions. In the end, republicans did not listen, advancing the bill out of committee. Now it gets a floor vote. That could happen by tuesday. We should note part of the legislation targets the liberal leaning harris county, banning an overnight Voting Option the county rolled out during the pandemic. In a statement the leader of the Texas House democratic caucus said in part, you just cant make this up. Republicans are passing Antivoter Legislation overnight to prohibit texans from casting a ballot overnight. Joining me know, representative, Texas Republicans hope to pass these restrictions as early as tuesday. In May Democrats staged i walkout. Do you plan to walk out this time . What i say is all options are on the table. We are definitely considering that option. But please understand how difficult that is. That means getting over 55 members of our house to all lead the state probably because the speaker can have us arrested and brought back to the floor of the house if we arent present and quorum is broken. Also understand too that our job is not a fulltime paying job. It is a job where we get paid about 7,000 a year. Most of us have other jobs and families to get back to. We just came off a sixmonth session where we have made the sacrifices knowingly. But to do so again for an extended period of time is a hardship. And top of all that, the republican Governor Abbott has now defunded our entire legislature in punishment for not passing his Voter Suppression bill. So, i have Staff Members right now who do not know if they will get payed in august. Its a difficult situation. That is all incredibly helpful context, so let me reframe the question, which is which tools do you have at your disposal still in order to fight back. Well, were not a majority. Thats a good question. Were not in the majority so we dont have the power to vote this bill down. We keep hearing from some about bipartisanship. The republicans took none of our amendments Last Night during the hearing. Again, they rammed this thing through starting public testimony after midnight when people were signing up at 7 00 a. M. When they opened signups for testimony. So, we dont have a lot of options is the answer. Breaking quorum would be a sure way to kill the bill. Other than that, im somewhat at a loss. But, again, it is hard to do and we know that if we do Break Quorum theres a high chance that the governor will call another Special Session after this. He has the power to do to get his way. What we absolutely need, the only thing that protects texans right now for the long term is federal legislation to protect our Voting Rights. We need the John Lewis Voting rights passed. We need the for the people act passed. To that point, we know the president tuesday is going to give a big Speech On Voting Rights. What is it you want to hear from him . I want to hear this is his number one priority. I want to hear that he will put the full force power, prestige of the White House on the line to make this happen. This is a foundational right that the foundation of all other rights. There is nothing more important. There is a federal plan to limit our voice. We know the Heritage Foundation has passed. Thank you so much for your time. I want to turn to the advocacy on the ground. Hundreds of texans to the capitol this weekend to demand lawmakers not mess with their access to voting. Charlie bonner with the group joins us now. Charlie, you stayed up all night to testify about the new restrictions. You even dmd me. Tell me what did you tell lawmakers . Thanks so much for having me. Only for American Voices would i get out of bed after being awake for 23 hours. Thanks for having me. It was critical for us to be there Last Night to show lawmakers that the vast majority of texans do not encourage these efforts to put up intentional barriers. We value our freedoms and that includes the freedom to vote. Last night hundred of texans showed up, stayed through the night, many folks testifying for the first time, getting involved in this complicated, wonky, long process and staying through the night. And while i am exhausted tonight, i am i through the night. While i am exhausted, i am inspired and have never been more inspired. Pro Voter Texans turned out 61 against the Conspiracy Theorists and crazies who so often push these narratives. There is a Tide Turning in texas right now that is really Ground Zero in the national fight for Ourna Freedom to vote. It is incredibly moving to see all the texans showing up and testifying and i am loving the number of people i am watching testify based off notes they took in their phones. Last night the dnc announced a 25 Million education into Voter Education following these attacks in the states, to help with new registration, educate voters about newis laws. If the laws in texas pass, how does a group like yours ramp up efforts to overcome the obstacles to the Ballot Box Understanding of course that no amount of effort from you is going to be an equal counterweight to the structural obstacles you are up against . It is important for all of us to turn out in numbers so high in the next election that no amount of Voter Suppression could confuse the odds. We see people turning up for the first time and theyre not just going to stop advocating. Theyll bring more and more friends into thel fold, texans folks who have never voted before. We know in texas at move texas we focus on building up this new generation of voters, the most diverse electorate in texas and maybe the united states own history. Well show that there is a real power behind what is happening in this voting Rights Movement Rightmo now. Charlie, you heard me ask Representativeme Hinojosa which tools they have at their disposal to push back. Your sense of what it is that democrats can do at this point in the game . Well, there are all sorts of strategies were using. It is incumbent upon our Pro Voter lawmakers to do everything they can to stop this piece of legislation. There are things that well do to advocate for better amendments to be put on this legislation. We know many of our election officials are making sure they are not having Unintended Consequences as this legislation really seeks to tie their hands and make sure when it comes to the next pandemic or natural disaster it is goingor to be ev more difficult to facilitate an election. So those amendments on the floor are absolutely critical but the representative is absolutely correct we needes federal intervention now. We need the for the people act. We need the John Lewis Voting rights act to protect the fundamental right to vote here in texas. All right. Thank you as always. Breaking news in cuba. Thousands protesting their Governments Response to the covid pandemic. In doing so, calling for an end to cubas decades of dictatorship. According to the Miami Herald protesters demanded medicine, vaccines, and an end to hunger reminiscent of protests not seen since the 1994 uprising in havana under fidel castro. The sentiment shared with Demonstrators Today in miamis little havana. With me now on the phone our nbc News Director of latin america. Tell us more about the protests were seeing in cuba and how widespread they are, how rare they are, what the demands are. Weve lost mary. Well come back to the story and now turn to haiti where there are new developments. Today senior Fbi And Department of Homeland Security officials are ready to begin assisting in the investigation of the killing of haitis president. He was shot to death inside his own home early wednesday and his wife injured. At least 20 suspects have been detained. Haitian authorities have requested the united states send troops to assist in stabilizing Haiti And Help protect critical resources. Were bringing in our guest to talk us through the u. S. Response. What have you you are listening to what we are planning to do. What do you think the conversations are as they are being had by this administration . It is important to note that this is not the same as the coup in the early 90s. There is no u. N. Resolution authorizing the use of military force. So what were seeing primarily here is three things. First the u. S. Is going to support the investigation. The second is there is Emergency Funding for equipping and training haitian police. Thirdly, i think this is a larger question of making sure that haiti doesnt slip back into a Civil War, into a coup. I think there is a challenge here for the biden administration as it exits afghanistan to show that it can wield Foreign Policy without using the military. The suspects arrested include 18 colombians, two americans of haitian descent. What information on the Intel Level can we expect to find out about this assassination . The Big Question was going to be, was this a foreign plot . They have rounded up several americans, several other foreign nationals. It is not clear if these people are directly linked to the assassination though haitian officials claim they are. If this was a foreign born plot that is something very different than if this was in Fact Something that came as a Power Grab from one of the haitian factions. Im sure u. S. Intelligence and investigators are looking very closely as to where the nexus and the motive of this assassination came from. Right. The united states is pulling troops out of afghanistan while haiti is asking for troops to be sent there. What are the optics of the military assistance at this point . Theyre terrible. I dont think on a personal level as a veteran, i just dont think the u. S. Government can pull out of afghanistan while it is still dealing with afghan interpreters and looking to settle that question and began to start flowing u. S. Troops into haiti. Furthermore, on a legal point, there is no authority for us to send u. S. Military forces. Even if the haitians ask for them we have to have an authority. I go back to when u. S. Forces entered haiti in the 90s that was under a u. N. Resolution. There is no such resolution. Haiti hasnt slipped into Civil War just yet. This is still unfortunately just a murder investigation. Jen psaki announced the u. S. Is going to send covid vaccines to haiti as soon as this week. Your sense in how that move could help in stabilization. Anything that can be done whether it is humanitarian and Disaster Relief efforts, whether it is covid vaccines, whatever the u. S. Can do to stabilize the country helps quite a bit. Clearly, covid vaccines would help. We dont want haitian refugees streaming from haiti and causing a humanitarian crisis. Thank you so much for joining us. I want to bring back Mary Murray to the Breaking News in cuba. Before i lost you i was asking you to walk me through the protests. What we are seeing. Where we are seeing the protests, how widespread they are, how rare they are and the demands of the cuban people. Hi. I think everybody was kind of surprised when the protests erupted today across the island. My understanding is that it began in a neighborhood in havana, working class neighborhood, and there were a couple hundred people who took to the streets. Im told there was a Sixhour Power Outage in that neighborhood and that people were congregating outside their houses. They were hot, fed up, and started marching. Speaking with Family Back in miami, streaming, you know, the video, streaming the protests it then started to catch fire. And were told that there were protests in at least five different neighborhoods in havana and at least that many towns across the island. The protests were mainly centered around Food And Medicine shortages and covid and there were also slogans with people calling for freedom and liberty, some of the demonstrators chanting that. But i think it mainly is people feeling desperate, not having enough to eat, not having any income coming in because of the pandemic, family from florida is not visiting because of the pandemic restrictions on travel. And so people are feeling desperate and took to the streets. Our camera people tried to go to the neighborhood where the first protests erupted. There were Police Road blocks that stopped our vehicles but we did see the video from the protesters live streaming the events. About two hours after that the protests moved into Downtown Havana and i believe that you were showing that video earlier in your program. We did see some arrests and police controlling the crowd. I do want to ask you as someone who is familiar with the region to talk just a little bit about how rare what we are watching is. I mean, what we are seeing, how widespread, the number of provinces this is happening. We have not seen something like this since the mid 90s, is that correct . Exactly. It is the most Dissent Weve seen in cuba since the summer of 1994 when you had that massive crisis that sent about 35,000 cubans across the Florida Straits. To be honest with you, there are experts and observers now who before todays protests have been talking about the dire circumstances in cuba and that it could be the perfect storm. It is the kind of thing that could make people try to take to the Florida Straits and try their hand at getting to the u. S. So it could very, you know, easily fuel another massive exodus from the island. All right. Nbcs Mary Murray, i am so grateful for your time and i promise we at American Voices are going to continue to track this story. I think i want more people to pay attention to the legal system to understand that, yes, its a very unfortunate that cosby is free now. He is able to go about thinks daily life in a way that many women were traumatized and livelihood was destroyed by the experiences that happened by this man. She sort of pivot with that anger and that frustration and turn it towards The System that allowed this to happen in the first place. What we need to be doing is really looking at people who are leading the charge and changing the Justice System and making it much p more of a, you know, victim centered system. I talk about that in a piece a lot. There are lawyers like Robby Caplan who is working on this for years. There are many, many women working towards it. We need to be paying attention to the legal system as a whole and how it has failed us. Right. I want to tie the two cases together. When it comes to the britney case, you said you recognized her rage. Tell me more about that. So i wrote a little bit about my experience growing up as a Child Actor and being sort of breadwinner for everyone around me. Friends and to a degree some family members. My relationship with my parents is extremely close and my parents are incredible people. But i understood how complicated money makes things. What i saw out of britney and what i see, especially with the judges latest ruling to not enter conservatorship which is absolutely shocking to me, given the testimony she gave and the fact that so much of what she talked about sounds like a human rights violation. It is absolutely shocking to me to think this woman cannot have control over her own money. And actually, another thing that i havent seen people talk about enough is that it really weaponizes mental illness to any degree. We dont actually know the state of Britney Spears mental health. It is being weaponized against her in the Court Of Public Opinion and privately with this conservatorship. We have no idea what this woman is going through. She deserves to have control over her own Money And Life and body. And i recognize that to a fraction of that degree just growing up in the business and knowing that having money complicates things. It complicates the relationships around you. It makes things very tenuous and difficult. And unless youre ready to have a real conversation about that with the people in your life and whether or not you have healthy people in your life or not changes everything. You wrote so eloquently about what happened to her and the Cosby Case and seeing a connection between the cases. Youre talking about the dissidents in the headlines. Tell me more. I think the dissidents is just that all of it is a spectacle. That is part of what it is. This is the 24hour news cycle. Its part of what were a part of, twitter, profiles, whatever it is that were doing. And we look at Britney Spears and we see a shiny cant. And we see Bill Cosby and to a different degree but very similarly, we also see a shiny object. But with he see that as a villian. And so its very much a problem, i think that, were out there in the media and were not talking about solutions enough. And were not talking about the hard truths of what is going on and why the actions are happening and why the experiences happen. Whether that is Britney Spears who is incredibly rich or somebody who does not have the financial resources she does. So many women say i experienced this on a small level. This is my life. Ive gone through this. So theyre tied. Tend of the day, this is ultimately about the corruption of power and about the corruption of power it is extremely unhealthy in our culture.
