Were awaiting a Press Conference that Richard Branson and those three astronauts with him all employees of Virgin Galactic and the two pilots. Well have a Press Conference with them. Tom costello is making his way to that Press Conference and well take a listen to some of the details of what transpired in suborbital flight. A first, extraordinary accomplishment on this July Sunday here. We have other developing stories to get to at this hour. We give you a Look at the capitol today. Its 100 degrees and you think for one minute they went vertical at 2,300 miles an hour carrying passengers into a orbital flight. Bezos is in this race. We talked about the billionaire bro race. Elon musk is here this morning. He is very accomplished. Hes incredibly accomplished in space. He has put people on the international Space Station in a different mission. This about making money. As we said all morning, a huge step in that direction. Absolutely. Accessing it for anybody who can first afford it. That will be a relatively few folks. The competition could bring the price down. We hope Jeff Bezos gets things going into space. Cal, thank you so much for watching things for us. Well be back with you again. You heard mentioned, nine days away for Jeff Bezos flight. How will that flight be different from what We Saw today . Blue origin has a reusableca. Its called new sheperd. These are nearly like floor to Ceiling Windows that are personalized to seats around that capsule. It launches vertically. It goes up into space. The Booster Separates and flies back for a vertical landing while the capsule keeps going up. The astronauts then feel a few minutes of weightlessness very familiar to few minutes that Richard Branson felt today. It will reenter like a capsule. It will land on the ground. Not in water. Thats interesting. They will have to climb seven flights of stairs. Theres no elevator for that system yet. They will get a very different experience than what We Saw today. It will be truly unique. You can see a lot of passengers maybe also buying a ticket with Blue Origin to get that different experience there. Blue origin auctioned one off for millions of dollars. We dont know what the average price will be. It sounds a lot like what bezos is doing sounds like what the Space Shuttle experienced. You get launched vertically and a booster falls away and launches this other thing into space. That may be where the similarities end. Given the fact you are an astronaut and you travel there. How do you interpret that . Yes, they are two totally different models. I think just comes from the fact that, you have two different men coming up with to different ways and different competition. Thats the beautiful thing about competition. It usually breeds a lot of different ideas. This is the two different ways to get into space. In terms of what those four restaurants, they have been given their astronaut wings, Richard Branson and the other employees, we are told they have experienced travel at the speed of sound. Im curious how that affects the body. When you travel that fast and that high. Can you weigh in on that . Absolutely. I dont know since they were up there for about four minute, i dont know if they got they were up there long enough to experience a lot of the different things that happen. There are a couple of things that do happen when youre up in a nongravitational environment. I label it the Charlie Brown effect. It starts when youre on the Launch Pad sitting on your back for three hours and your fluids shift toward your head. Once you get up in space, your head physically gets bigger. Thats why i call it the Charlie Brown effect. Theres no gravity to keep them where they belong. Do you get headaches . Some people get a bit of stuf stuffiness. I didnt experience any of that but thats probably the biggest symptom. The other one is because you no longer have the orientation of space. We know that when youre here on earth, when your feet are on the ground, thats the bottom. In space, your feet can be anywhere. You no longer have that im left or im right. Theres no orientation in space. It all depends on how you are moving in space. That adviser to get you disoriented as you come back. The other thing that happens is you grow a little bit. You dont have gravity reacting on your spine and you get up there, one of the things we do for fun is every one measure themselves and see how much they have grown while they are in space. That was huge. Im only 53 on a good day. I wish i could have kept that inch or so when i grew. Come back to Earth And Everything comes back with you. That makes sense. Can i ask you, having been a competitive gymnast a long time ago, i spent a lot of time Upside Down, can you get a Head Rush . Do you feel that or no . Theres no sensation of having that rush to your head. You get a bit of stufiness for the first couple of day and the enlarged head. I thank you for taking my questions. Im living through your and your experiences. Id love to be in your shoes one day. Im curious your perspective here and what you think of todays historic mission. We will see more private Space Flight tours. What are you most excited about and most concerned about . Excited this went off without a hitch. One thing i would bring up thats been over Looked, touched upon is the role of calling this the billionaires Boys Race is a disservice or discredit to what this is all about. Its really about democratizing that. We need to get beyond that and Look at how we bring more women, more underrepresented minorities, more people from all Walks Of Life and thats what my hope is. Im very concerned about or motivated by bringing more incredible women into these fields. She was inspired to advance herself as a astronaut because she watched another woman, the first woman of indian origin to go to space. She said in an interview that that was seeing someone who Looked like her, who represented her made her feel that she could accomplish that. Thats where great day, great victories but i think its a disservice in way to call this this billionaires Boys Race because its not. You Look at all the people who are behind making this moment happen. Its a very Sage Point and im glad you did so. We heard Richard Branson thanks those who contributed to the success. I think hes well aware its not just about him. He seemed to be gracious in his initial comments. We have been told the press has gathered. This News Conference scheduled for about 18 minutes ago is scheduled to begin. If i interrupt you, my apologies for being rude. That said, what do you think was the biggest hurdle in your reporting that which Richard Branson had to get past. We know there was a massive hiccup in 2014 when his first Test Flight into space literally fell apart costing the life of one pilot and severely injuring the other. There was a big pause. Was it emotional, technical, engineering . Was it fear. What do you know about that . There were several big hurdles. In 2007, the company that designed this had another failed accident with three employees died on the ground bauds of a tank explosion. That was a big Learning Curve at that time too. They had never reached space at that point. You come back seven years later, they have what they think is a pretty good, because of pilot error, an unlocked mechanism came apart early. A very tragic lesson. Then theres the regulations. I think we turned up the audio. When he started taking q and a, well get to this. The other four astronauts and Looks like one of the pilots, three astronauts, in addition and the two pilots. Here we go. I started many, many sort of entrepreneurial or created many entrepreneurial things in my lifetime whether its airlines or Cruise Lines or train companies. Every time we start a new company, i will immerse myself an experience it. I will have a notebook. This is something you kids should think about. Ill have a notebook and the last week ive had my notebook with me. Ive written down 30 or 40 things for the next person that goes to space that much better. The only way to find these thing s to get in Spaceship And Experience it. Having said that, 99. 99 was beyond my wildest dreams. Its impossible to describe. I should try. What its like going in seven or eight seconds. As you go into space, just the views are breathtaking. Theres no yes we are so lucky to have this planet that we all live on. I will devote The Rest Of My Life doing that. Theres so many engineers who worked at virgin orbit. Some of them very young. Theres 17 years of creating this. It has created so many engineers and new jobs. Thats the other wonderful exciting thing about this. Im mike moses. I can take that. Everything Looked perfect in realtime. We have done our quick Engineering Walk around. The quick around in the ramp is perfect. The ship Looks pristine. No issues. We obviously had some trouble with the transmission. We wanted to get the interior cameras into the ground and they kept cutting in and out. Thats the only real issue that were tracking now on the ship. As richard said, well take our time and do the detailed inspections and figure out when were ready to go again but the ship Looked perfect. The nice thing about everything was filmed on board. That well be able to put out later today. It wasnt as if we lost anything. People want to see more, im sure our team will be offering it. I definitely want to see the tapes. Its so strange. Youre suddenly, i said my words back to kids down here, unbuckled and the next moment i see three people floating below me. Look out of the window and just, its im sorry never going to be able to do it justice. Its indescribably beautiful. Yeah. Any way. Thanks, richard. We have a question at the back here. Every flight people are learning more and more for next flight. The only thing i was worried about was some tiny little something that would get in the way. The team was so meticulous. I have no concerns on that hand but any way were celebrating yet another incredibly successful flight into space today. Thank you. What did you see from space . What do you see from space is this wonderful dark sky and then this Incredible Blue got these incredible windows. They turn the spaceship Upside Down so when youre floating, youre Looking out of these giant windows back at this pufl sky, beautiful earth back down here. We launched today to enable people to go into space and you might think, as kids, why should i join in raffle. If you can persuade your parents or grandparents to give you a Raffle Ticket when youre 18 then you and a friend will be able to go to space. Its an exciting opportunity for people around the world, which is never existed before. I was very busy for the first part of the flight in space. I had some checks to get done so i was in my zone doing that. I remember hearing beth shouting, dont forget to Look out the window. Very i Looked out the window and it was just the view was just stunning. Its very zen and peaceful up there as well. What jumped out at me was the colors and how far away it Looked as well. I was just mesmerized for a good 30, 40 seconds. It was amazing. Beth, I Cant help but ask this because this is your second time in the cabin. How was it the second time . Truly phenomenal. It was truly phenomenal the second time. I would say it was more majestic, more beautiful and shared with more souls. I couldnt be more pleased or proud of everything. Amazing. Question down here. Im going to ask you to Look ahead. We have another nine days until we might be doing this all over again with regard to going to Jeff Bezos and his Blue Origins. How will that be different . What do you want to see from that one . What we really like to see is a lot of what We Saw today. A lot of access. We saw in this flight almost every stage. We saw the astronauts walk out through the videos that Virgin Galactic put out. We saw the vehicle fly up. We saw it released. We saw what it was like inside the cabin. Blue origin had a lift of being secretive. They would announce their Test Flights after they had done them in the early days. Thats changed over the years as they sought a commercial market. We still kind of only seen very short Web Casts of the Test Flights after they had done them in the early days. It has changed. But we have still only seen a short Web Cast of the countdown to launch and the landing. They did a rehearsal just yesterday and We Saw more of what it might be Look in the cabin. But that experience, for what the passengers are going to pay to get into space are going to feel, maybe a glimpse into that, what the Ticket Price is going to be, when their next Test Flight will be, that kinds of a thing. Then to Look even further ahead, in september, Elon Musk is launching a private plight to orbit. Elon musk, the fact that he has been working closely with nasa, has he been doing we have read about him, but sometimes in space there is secrecy. Has anyone else been doing it to the extent he has, particularly these two, Richard Branson or Jeff Bezos . Elon musk has been the leader in the commercial flight, too. But there are other companies. Nasa has picked boeing and their vehicle called starliner. It will launch another Test Flight with no astronauts on board at The End of the month, maybe on the 30th right now. There are other companies vying for it. Then acting space is building a new room for the Space Station a private room that tourists can fly to. That is supposed to launch next year.
