Such an unusual murder with a victim who seemed to have no End Ms. Then the chilling on camera view. There is a figure. You see someone wearing a hoodie, come out in the dark. Youre hook at the killer. You get the goose bumps, the hairs on the back of the head. A father dead in the garage. Who was higd it. What . Lies, delusion, betrayal. You just dont want to believe that people can be that evil. Look closely. Top left of the screen. A hooded figure walks away from the camera. Who is it . What are they doing . Why are they there . Minutes later, a truck pulls in. A different person walks out. His name we know. Don fluitt. It appears his Trash Can was timed over. He pulls it back up. You look at him and hes fine. Hes happy and healthy and picking that his Trash Can. And then the Garage Closes. Thats the end of Don Fluitts life, basically. The Neighbors Security Camera captured these images and left a mystery. That was one of those moments where you get the chills and think, i think we know when it happened. Now we just have to figure out who. And why. There is nobody that i could think of that would want to hurt him. Albuquerque, new mexico. Thousands of people come here every fall to watch the colorful hotair balloons sail through the desert sky. At 26, he got married, had two kids. The marriage didnt last. His kids moved to oklahoma with mom. But he never stopped being a loving father. So he had to go out of his way to be with you two, too. Kirg kirk is a far piece away. He always made the drive though. Do you have a favorite memory . We would take an annual Camping Trip every year. We would wake up and go fishing. One of the best things i can remember. It was awesome. When don was in his late 30s, he decided to pursue a Childhood Dream to back firefighter. Do you have any idea where that itch started . The man next door was a fireman. He got don to help him Put Out a fire. They were up on the roof. It scared me to death. He was a boy and this was a man who wanted to teach him and that was dons dream. That someday ill be a fireman. He joked with him and told him he was too old. Was it the a adrenaline . I just think he cared for people and he wanted to do his part to save as many lives as he could. Soon, don met dennys neighbor. A woman named christine. She made him happy. She was silly and quirky like he was. She was like literally the girl next door. Literally. Wasnt long before don and christine married. A little over a year later, they had a Baby Girl together. They named her sienna. Dons Son Josh said sienna seemed to complete his life. They were so far away, at least he could have his own child with him every step of the way, every second of the day. Sienna was an amazing child. She was bright, brilliant, she could even the herself music a little toy piano. She writes songs and sings them. She was talented and funny. As you can see in this Home Video that christine took, they doted on their Little Girl. They loved him. They were always doing goofy things. They were two peas in a pod. She loved her daddy. Loved her daddy. Life was great until don, after eight years as a firefighter, lost his job. According to a close friend, christine who was an xray they can to shoulder most of the bills. The financial strain proved to be too much. When sienna was only 4 years old, christine filed or two divorce. The couple shared custody of sienna. Don made sure his life still revolved around his Little Girl. He would braid her hair before school. He would design it. For all the plays she was in, he would make her costume, dress her, dor her makeup. He was an amazing father. He wanted to make the best life possible for sienna and be the best man He Coble could. This is amber. She said don taught sienna to help others. They would Go To Church Every Sunday and have spaghetti on sundays. One day they just made too much spaghetti. Shes not dragging her feet with all of this. No, no. Not at all. From Spaghetti Sundays to silly home made music videos. He wouldnt do anything unless he could do it with her. Just a few weeks before christmas, 2016, dons oldest sister died of cancer. His mother sharon was devastated. Don and sienna, then 11 years old, took Road Trip to california to spend christmas with her. When the festivities were over i didnt want him to go. Don who was now working at an agency that served the developmentally disaged, told his mom he had a meeting he couldnt miss. So i went outside with him. Hugged and kissed and got everything in the car. After an 11hour drive, they arrived home in albuquerque. When where sienna found a new bicycle under the tree. But don needed to drop her off with her mom. She didnt hear from him. She call her dads coworker. She said i cant get ahold of my dad. And i said, you know, honey, let me try your dad. Dont worry. Hes fine. Valerie called, text, no answer. She and a coworker went to his home. I think i was starting to get anxious. A part of me knew something really wasnt right. We parked in his driveway. No response. I told my friend, the only way well know whether hes here or not is if his truck is here so i opened the Garage Door. And when i opened the Garage Door, i found him. Even as the rio grande, the great but gentle River Ran through this town of kirg kirk, Valerie Torres made a grisly discovery inside Don Fluitts garage. Her friend called 911. Hes on the ground in front of the vehicle. Something is very wrong. Don had been bludgeoned. His throat stabbed. I knew he was gone. I knew there was nothing that could i do to help him. Then she thought about sienna who was at her mothers house. I remember my heart breaking. Literally. Ive never felt my heart hurt like that. Within minutes, an officer from the Albuquerque Pd arrived on the scene. Valerie and her friend were still in tears. His Body Camera rolled as he walked past siennas new bicycle, still next to the christmas tree. Then into the garage where Dons Body lay. As night fell, the yellow tape went up. Albuquerque Police Detective Mike Capland ran the investigation. Everything was in pristine order. The only thing Out Of Order was Don Fluitt in the garage. There was no sign of forced entry. His wallet was on the kitchen counter. Police located all the Kitchen Knives and sent them to the Crime Lab. They also gathered other forensic evidence including Dons Fingernail clippings. There was immediate blood on the walls, under him, on the truck that looked like hand print. But the detective said it didnt seem like enough blood given the injuries don sustained. Thats when we noticed an empty bottle of bleach and towels that smelled of bleach in the washer. So there was some effort to clean up. Yes. His team did a test with luminol. What you see is a combination of what we think the blood with a very dull glowing and a very bright glowing, which is typical for bleach. So it looked like either hands or the Murder Weapon was washed off in the sink. The floor also lit up. The same with The Door. Kaplan and his team had started going Door To door and met dons next door neighbor. She tell us there are two cameras. Thats interesting. She told them she had been home the night before when she hears the garage come up shelf looks in her camera and she sees Don Fluitts Truck Backing out and leaving. The time, 7 37. He had the first Time Line. He gathered more when he talked on exwife christine. She confirmed he dropped sienna off at 7 15. And she reynold something. He thought someone had been in his house while he was away. He said its weird. There was like Cat Hair in my dryer. And someone used a pan in my house. Christine also told the detective that don sometimes suffered road rage. He yelled at some individual. The individual followed don for a while. Christine said it scared her. Could this be the kind of narration that ends up as a murder . Its possible. So maybe an angry motorist followed Dons Hole after an argument or maybe it was someone he knew, someone with access to the house. Kaplan spoke to lenny ruiz. He said don was a kind hearted man and wondered if his murder had anything to do with his work with homeless people. He opens himself to everybody. He opens his home. Dons Mom Sharon in california got a call in the middle of the night. The detective was on the line. And he said, maam, ill sorry, your son is dead. And i think i started screaming. Just 19 days before she lost her eldest daughter to cancer. 19 years before that, her youngest daughter had also died. And now don. I couldnt get my head around it. It didnt seem real. Denial it is called amber to let her know about her uncle don. I just start screaming no, over and over again. Moy dad was obviously a mess. And the news soon made its way to oklahoma where dons older children lived. My mom called me. And it was probably midnight. And told me the news. And he just, at first, i was like, no, this isnt real. This stuff dont happen. You just see this on tv. But he was gone. He was gone. It was horrible. This is an intimate murder. A handson murder. Yeah. Very personal, violent. Who would put a target on your brother of all people . Mr. Sunday night spaghetti . My first thought was terry. I even told the detective that. Terry white, christines husband, siennas stepfather. Don told me a lot about him. I knew there were altercations in the past. The detective went to see terry the next day. A truck driver, he was back from his shift and back home with sienna and christine. Sienna and christine left the room. Kaplan asked terry about his relationship with don. You know, in the beginning, i would say it was rocky. Terry told kaplan, when they went to court over custody of sienna, don sometimes seemed to want a confrontation. If he can get me in any kind of way, violent or scream at him, that would make him look good and he would ultimately, he would get his daughter. Terry said to the detective that he mostly avoided don and hadnt had any contact with him in a while. We wont find any Finger Prints of yours anywhere in his house or anywhere in the area . No. I just would not get in the guys life. It wasnt worth it. I loved that Little Girl. I dont want to make her hate me. Kaplan asked about the night of the murder. Terry said he spent the evening visiting his sister. He said he left about 9 00, stopped at a wendys for dinner, then drove to work and Elementary School in his car until his shift began. So you were in the Parking Lot at work . Takerys sister confirmed his story. So did his boss who said she had Security Cam Video that would show terry at work that night. By then, kaplan had received an unexpected Pho Call from the neighbor. She had her own surveillance video. She made a discovery and said, hey, you need to look at 7 41 p. M. Coming up, a mysterious figure captured on camera. There is someone in a hoodie. And the individual walks off camera toward where don Lewis Door would be. There were tons of picture thats we put together from everybody. A slide show. A huge gathering for him. He was very loved. Meanwhile the Murder Investigation continued. Detective kaplan spoke to Dons Neighbor who said she found something on her home security video. I started looking at the clip shes talking about. And believe it or not, there is a figure. A figure. A figure. Someone in a Hoodie Walking to Don Fluitts Trash Can. They lay the Trash Can down on its side. The individual walks off camera toward where Don Fluitts door would be. He returns. Pulls into the garage. You see him walk out of garage. He walks to his Trash Can and picks it up. And then walks into his garage again. At this point, em, you could see the light from the garage diminishing as the Garage Door closed. And inexplicably, the Garage Shoots back up. You see a series of flashes. Im the hooded figure outside. We went to the season of the crime to understand how this could happen. It is as easy as that, huh . So somewhere don . In the house . I believe hes In The House night. And there is the series of flashes that you see on the surveillance video. Hooded figure tripped the sensor. The door closing behind him. Did you think the Surveillance Camera had taken a picture of your killer . I did. A tantalizing image but no face. The Garage Closes and Don Fluitt is found dead the next morning. Even as he puzzled over the hooded figures identity, the detective started to hear about someone else. Dons brother, dennis. Just days after the murder, Dennis Got the keys to the house. Dons children wondered what he was up to. They felt it was odd that dennis was there and sort of taking control. Taking over his brothers life. Yes. That was a concern to them. Kaplan also learned that denial it is and don had had a falling out a year before will dennis had moved away to arizona for a while. He moved back to albuquerque a couple months before the murder. It kind of puts up a Red Flag for me. Youre in the process of reconnecting. You had a falling out before. And now don has inextricably been murdered. Can you rule out violence within the family . Absolutely not. Brother on brother. Absolutely not. Domestic violence is a huge catalyst for violence, murder, money, love, relationships. It sounds as though the brother you talk about is making your Nose Twitch a little bit. Tiffany and josh had the same feeling. Did you think maybe your uncle, his brother, had something to do with this . There was talk of it. Just because of the strained relationship and what had happened. Youre hurt. Youre grieving. You dont know what to think. Kaplan interviewed denial it is who said it all started after their father died. I got a little angry about it. He took my dads stuff. There were disagreements just like im starting to see with my brothers death. Kaplan learned his dad had lost his job as a frist because of a drug test. He asked about that. I guarantee my Brother Hasnt touched heavy drugs in 30 years. Then denial it is came up with a name. Someone else they should be looking at. It makes me mad. Im no investigator. Im no cop. But this guy spends two hours in my Brothers House youre talking about the landlord, benny . Benny. The landlord. He said just days after the murder, he found benny in his hole. He claimed, i dont know if hes messing with the crime scene. Dennis that he had heard that he was upset with benny over a hole in the ceiling that had not been taken care of. They asked for Finger Prints. He said he was uneasy about dennis. Benny said dennis wanted to rent another Townhouse Don owned. Emhe would move all of Dons Stuff over there and set it up. Did he tell you why . For sienna. He wanted to set it up for dons little father, which is weird. Benny said he didnt rent to dennis. Not after a Fwroun Check revealed that he had assault. More importantly i wondered why he had suddenly taken a massive interest in Don Fluitts affairs with the condo. When we spoke to dennis, we wondered that, too. Coming up they kept talking about an estrangement between the two of you. The brother, the landlord, the step father. Three possible suspects. These were names i couldnt eliminate. And one of them is about to change his story. When the figure in the garage continues. Figure in the garage continues. Of petsworth vetworld. Business was steady, but then an influx of new fourlegged friends changed everything. Dr. Petsworth welcomed these new patients. The only problem . More appointments meant he needed more space. You are looking live at surfside, florida, in North Eastern Miamidade County in south florida. This is a live demolition of the rest of this partially collapsed Condo Building after engineers declared the structure unstable. What youre looking at right now is whats called an energetic felling. They drilled explosives into parts of the building strategically so it could basically fall down in place. This is a very well known demolition technique. It was used not too long ago to demolish a bridge in new York City for construction because it is considered to be a much more contained way to bring down a structure that needs to come down. This is one of the crucial efforts of the Rescue Process happening in surfside. Can you tell us whats happening on the ground . We saw what i think you saw. The remainder of Champlain Collapsing in an instant. We heard the booms start just before 10 30. I looked at what was left of that condominium fell to the ground. It is fourth of july. This is a night usually of joy, of fireworks. Instead of all of that, people have gathered nearby to watch this building collapse. There were no cheers or any sounds of joy. This is not a joyous moment. This is an incredibly sad, difficult moment. The people who live nearby have been told to shelter in place, keep the windows closed because of the dust that will inevitably come because of the collapse of the building. Officials say this is necessary. But necessarily doesnt necessarily mean easy. They say it is necessary for two key reasons. One, what was left of this structure was not structurally sound. And given the weather that could be coming here from tropical Storm Elsa, it was important that they take this down in a controlled manner. They also said by demolishing what is left of this building, would it and fanld area where Rescue Workers could continue searching for people. But again, this is a very difficult moment for the families closest to this. A very emotional one weapon different emotions for the families of those who have lost their lives. Who are still unaccounted for. There is concern, worry about what would happen if maybe this went wrong for the people who could perhaps still be under that rubble. Families, there are many of them, still hoping for a lastminute miracle. 121 people are still unaccounted for. Presumably, many of them, underneath that rubble. The goal of this explosion, you talked about it. Electric felling is that it will fall in the exact Foot Print that has been laid out and will not disrupt other Search Efforts. Officials say by doing this, theyll be able to expand the Search Efforts for rescuers and hopefully recover maybe someone who might still be alive under that rubble or at least bring closure to families how are waiting for news. This is also a sad moment. We can see the dust coming this way. Now you can smell it. This is why theyve asked people who live here to stay at home and to shelter in place. This is an unavoidable by product of that collapse. You have to imagine this is a really difficult moment for families, or for individuals who survived this initial collapse. Because they were not able to get back into their homes. What remained of their homes recalling their possessions, their memories, family photos. Theyll never be able to get access to those. At this point we know as soon as structural engineers give the goahead for rescuers, theyre standing by, not ready to get back on that mound and to keep searching and to try to recover some of the 121 people still unaccounted for. And again, as you speak to some of the families who are among those missing, despite the days ticking by, many are still praying and believing in a meerg. This building, while it is difficult to watch it come down according to officials, was something that had to happen for Search Efforts to continue and get underway. And to avoid a bigger problem, a bigger disruption of those fefrts this building were to be pushed over by winds that could come from tropical Storm Elsa. Joshua . Yeah. As were looking at these pictures, if you need to move because of the dust, let us know and we can come back here. But one of the things i was about to mention, tropical Storm Elsa. Parts of southern florida, though not this part of south florida, are currently under a variety of warnings because tropical Storm Elsa is its way northwest to the keys on the way to the Gulf Of Mexico and then heading northeast across the state of florida and up into the atlantic. Currently, it doesnt look like elsa will get to surfside, florida, or any of south florida, except for monroe county. Who knows what elsa will do, if it will make an unexpected turn and then make the scene there in surfside, florida, even more complicated. We just witnessed the demolition of the Condo Building in surfside, florida, that partially collapsed not long ago. Rescue crews had been hoping to have better access to the structure, and to have a more stable environment in which to work to rescue operation. With tropical Storm Elsa coming, official decided it was too dangerous to be left to chance. So they are using energetic felling, a method designed to demolish a building straight down. They put just enough explosives in just the right places so when it detonates, it will essentially collapse straight down instead of breaking into multiple pieces. Who knows what the winds could have done from tropical Storm Elsa to that sflk if youre still with us, talk about the Time Line for what happens now that the building is down. I imagine they have to wait for a little bit . Literally for the dust to settle and to assess the scene before theyre able to go back in and make sure the detonation went the way they thought it would go. Yeah. When we had spoken to members of miamidade urban Search And Rescue prior to this happening, they had explained to us best they could, the process that would happen when this demolition occurred. I spoke to members of the Florida Task Force two earlier today. They said theyre the shift that went from 12 00 this afternoon until 12 00 this evening. They said as soon as they get the goahead from structural engineers that it is safe to go back on the mound, they will. It will take at least a few minutes for people to make sure when it is safe, there are no fires as a result of this demolition that need to be Put Out. And then literally, just blocks from here you have firefighters, Search And Rescuers, ready to go with their equipment and get back out. It will take a while with the Equipment Weve seen in the last few days. In the immediate aftermath, as soon as they have the cleerms, they can get back on the mound and start working Hand Tools and just have people on the ground. What ive been told again and again is thats the plan. As soon as it is determined that it is safe, that there are no fires that need to be Put Out, that rescuers can go back out, they are standing by. They are ready to do their job. I cannot tell you how badly these rescuers want to be on that mound. I spoke to someone the other day who said they have literally had to pull rescuers off the mound when their shift ends because they do not want to leave. I cant say it enough. You have 121 people still unaccounted for. 120 something loved ones, family members, looking for answers. These rescuers, they want with every fiber of their being to save lives if possible but to give these families closure. They know many of them, a lot of these rescuers, these are their loved ones, too. Assuming everything went according to plan with this demolition, there are no fires, anything like that, those rescuers could be back on that Mound Searching at Belief Hand tools really within kind of a halfhour give or take.
