Voting rights act. Meanwhile, republicans continue to try to rewrite History Trump Style by denying it ever happened. Only two House Republicans Vote Ed to create a January 6 committee to investigate the riot on the capitol. You cant deny the truth especially when its on video. The new York Post had this stunning break down of the insurrection. Reporter behind these writers is an Escape Route where lawmakers and Senate Staff are now fleeing. Just one officer stands guard. Keeping his composure, goodman draws the mob away from that Escape Route to where reinforcements are waiting. [ bleep ]. He drives them towards the senate and realizes the door is unguarded. Goodman shoves the protester again, lures the mob away, and brings them into that line of fellow officers. Always chilling to see that. Joining me now, ruth marcus, Editor And Columnist for the Washington Post. John brosnahan. And joan walsh. Happy 4th Of July. Thank you all for being here. Ruth, let me start with you and the supreme Court Decision in the arizona cases. Let me get you to react to something from Justice Alito in the opinion where he writes, because voting necessarily requires some Effort And Compliance with some rules, a Voting System that is equally open and furnishes an equal opportunity to cast a ballot must tolerate the usual burdens of voting. Mere inconvenience cannot be enough to demonstrate a violation. Ruth, not only are you a journalist, you are a lawyer. So your reaction to that. Well, a mere inconvenience. I would actually encourage Justice Alito to go visit some of the native american voters or wouldbe voters in arizona who dont live near mailboxes, who dont many of whom who dont have cars, many of whom live very far from Polling Places and see whether their ability to not be able to have other people collect their ballots and bring them in for counting is a mere, quoteunquote, inconvenience. That is a sliver of what Justice Alito and his five conservative colleagues did to the remaining part or what happened to the remaining part of section 2 of the Voting Rights act. And you know, the other thing, ruth, ill add to the litany of things you just pointed out. Also, a lot of people dont have formal street addresses. That was something that came up, i believe, in north dakota. Joan, your reaction to the supreme Court Decision. Well, ruth has it exactly right. And then there are more sections of the Alito Decision you can put on the screen to outrageous all on this beautiful holiday morning, jonathan. One of them that jumped out at me was where he essentially enshrines Donald Trumps Big Lie about Voter Fraud and says Voter Fraud is a very serious concern, you know, its correct, states must worry about this. It is a legitimate concern. Voter fraud is almost nonexistent, and he writes in a language that was really reminiscent of the way a lot of trump supporters, lawyers, legislators, et cetera, in congress and in State Legislatures around the country talked about, well, we dont know that theres Voter Fraud. The people are worried about Voter Fraud so we have to be very careful so we make sure there is no Voter Fraud even though we dont know much of it at all. That chilled me to see that argument which has been used to discredit Joe Bidens election for, you know, going on eight months now, to see that come from a supreme Court Justice was chilling to me. And, you know, bres, one of the things about this court system, if the Supreme Court hands down a nutty ruling, congress could easily just pass a law to correct what congress believes the Supreme Court did wrong. And yet when it came to just approving the ability to have a debate about the for the people act, it went down in a ball of flames. Is congress this go around going to be the Escape Hatch for doing something on Voting Rights . I dont see them doing anything right now unless they get rid of the filibuster. Your point is so well taken. Listen, the two biggest decisions from the Supreme Court since 2010, Citizens United and the Voting Rights decisions, Shelby County versus right. I mean, they, you know, congress could take up these issues. But since the times, since 2010, when Citizens United struck down a lot of restrictions on campaign finance, which is part of this whole argument i think that we have to look at as well, that congress has not done anything, they havent been able to do anything on voting, on campaign finance. So i think these issues are, you know, they become more and more critical. We have less Voting Access than we have more money in the system. Its the worst of all possible worlds thanks to the supreme Court Decision the last 11 years. Bres, let me get your reaction to what House Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy had to say about Liz Cheney, Congresswoman Cheney being part of the select committee. Im not making any threats about Committee Assignments, but as you know how congress works, you get elected by your district, and you get your committees from your conference. I dont know in history where someone would go get their Committee Assignments from the speaker and expect them to have them from the conference as well. You know, House Minority Leader i was about to say mitch mcconnell. Kevin mccarthy is sort of to me, hes the Poster Boy for why our democracy is at risk. Do you think hes going to follow through and punish Liz Cheney for doing her constitutional duty . You know, we were we had reported as originally when he made this warning he didnt call it a threat. He called it a warning. You know, and i talked to cheney after she, after she joined the select committee, myself and some other reporters. And her whole position was, look, im doing my duty. Cheney feels very strongly that congress needs to look at January 6th, needs to look at the role former President Trump had, needs to look at the Role Everybody had. You know, i think cheney Mccarthys Position or the position the gop leaders think now maybe cheney is not running again for reelection. Cheneys people say she is, so, you know, i think there will be pressure inside the conference to take some action against cheney. I already do. They already kicked her out of leadership. I can see them trying to strip her of Committee Assignments. There will be some kind of i think. In the time that we have left, joan and ruth, im going to come to you with this question. Sorry, bres, i gave you an extra question so you get to sit this one out. Im good. This is the 4th Of July. This segment is about our democracy being at risk because the supreme Court Decision in arizona, the select committee on the January 6th insurrection. Joan, ill start with you. What does america mean to you in this moment that were in . America is in Grave Danger, the america that we know. I am so grateful on this July 4th that We The People were able to peacefully, at least we were peaceful, our side, Evict Donald Trump from the White House and elect a genuine statesman, joe biden. But, you know, whenever i watch clips from the video that youve shown, i dont understand how republicans have become the party of sedition and the party that stands up against Democracy And Voter suppression. We are in Grave Danger at this point. To have this great Holiday Fall basically six months after that terrifying insurrection, i think its trying to tell us something. I think were supposed to pay attention, and too many republicans are not. Ruth . I guess on this July 4th, i would say im simultaneously so worried and so thankful. So worried about the state of our democracy, the notion that republicans, including Congressman Mccarthy who said it would be prudent to have an investigation of the insurrection, will turn their back on that. Democracy is so much more fragile than we thought it was. Our society in the wake of George Floyd and the focus that has put on inequality across the board, the mistreatment across the board is so much more divided than i thought it was. And yet i want to just end on a good note, which is so thankful to america and american ingenuity for having come up with the vaccines that allow us to celebrate this July 4th in a so much more normal way than a year ago. So lets end on a good note. That is a fabulous note to end on. Ruth marcus, john bresnahan, joan walsh, thank you for joining me. Surfside, florida, a live report next. As the threat of tropical Storm Elsa looms over the florida panhandle, officials have paused Search And Rescue efforts at the collapsed surfside Condo Building, and now preparations are underway to demolish the portion of the building still standing. Joining me now on the ground in surfside is msnbcs Vaughn Hillyard. Vaughn. Reporter jonathan, good to see you. This is the moment here where the officials are up against the clock. When youre looking at that 12story Building that is still standing, the plan is to take that building down before the Wind Gusts come in from tropical Storm Elsa. But were looking at anywhere from 20 mile to 60mile per hour winds coming in from the storm. Depending on the path from which it takes. And were looking at potentially those winds arriving by tomorrow. And thats why you heard from surfside mayor laying out the Time Line they intend to take the rest of that building down by tomorrow morning. It could very well happen today. They said that they are waiting for the contractor, the Demolition Contractor to essentially give the thumbs up and the go ahead that they are ready to go. The whole reason theyre taking this structure down before the Storm Hit is because they dont want that building to topple over in One Direction or another. Particularly onto that pile of rubble that is existing. Theres still 121 individuals unaccounted for, and the last thing they wanted was that building to fall in the wrong direction on top of that rescue effort. That is why they are taking it down before the storm. At the same time, in talking with families, they are concerned because they see every day, you know, two, three, four individuals whose bodies are being recovered. There have been no survivors found since those initial moments after the collapse ten days ago. Yet at the same time, i was talking to pablo rodriguez, a father of a 6yearold who lost believes they lost their grandma and great grandma. He said it would be so important to find that body to have a proper Burial And Closure to this. That is where the officials here, surfside mayor along with the miamidade county mayor, alongside Governor Desantis announced this Lastminute Decision to take that building down just before that storms arrival. Vaughn, one real quick question. I know weve been saying that the demolition could be today or tomorrow. Do you know whats factoring into how quickly they can get it done . Reporter this is a ramped up process. Usually it would take months to plan out an implosion. This is just a couple of days of planning here. That is why this demolition company, theyre going to go up to that last moment in which theyre able to do this. They are going to be laying a tarp on top of that rubble so that after the fact theyre more able easily able to remove that new material so they can go back and continue that rescue operation. But at this time there also have been no evacuations here from this area. Everybody, while The Sun is still out, sort of at a stand still as we await the Press Conference slated for an hour and a half from now. Jonathan . All right, Vaughn Hillyard in surfside, florida. Theres great things happening. Economy is growing faster than in 40 years. We have a record jobs. Wages are up faster than any time in 15 years. Were bringing our troops home. We have all across america people are going to Ball Games and doing good things. President Biden On Friday reminded americans of the stark differences between our Independence Day celebrations this year compared with those in 2020. Last year the country was in lockdown with an average of more than 50,000 new cases and more than 600 deaths each day. This year it has dramatically and drastically improved, with over 13,000 new cases and 200 deaths a day. That is something to celebrate. Yet there is still danger on the horizon in the form of the highly contagious Delta Variant. Joining me, dr. Osterholm and is the director for center for infectious Disease Research and policy at the great university of minnesota. Dr. Osterholm, did you very much for coming to The Sunday show. Thank you. Its good to be with you, jonathan. All right. So, President Biden had this goal of having 70 of the country vaccinated by this date. Unfortunately, that goal was not met, but is it a failure to say is it right to say its a missed deadline or missed goal when you know that 67 of the american people have received at least one shot . You know, whats happened over the course of the last seven to eight months of this country has been nothing short of a modern public health miracle. Getting the vaccines forward and to the level were at has been a major accomplishment and i give the administration great credit for that. But the problem is we cant set our goals based on some arbitrary number. We have to set them on what is going to make a difference in stopping the transmission of this virus. In the past week, 20 states have seen 20 or more increase in cases largely tied to this new Delta Variant. So even trying to get 70 of the population vaccinated with a single dose is not going to be enough to really stop the impact of this virus in our country. We need to wake up and recognize that. How worried should we be about this Delta Variant, dr. Osterholm . Were seeing in parts of the country where the Vaccination Rates are low, hospitalizations and Covid Case Positivity rates are going up. Well, we have to understand, first of all, that we have many parts of this country that have had very limited vaccination. When we talk about a number, its kind of like your head is in the freezer, your feet in the oven and the average temperature just right. We have over A Thousand counties in this country that have fewer than 30 vaccinated. We have four states that have less than 40 Singledose Vaccination in states. And we have an additional 20 states for which we actually dont even have 40 with one dose. So i think that the challenge we have right now is, in fact, helping people to understand why these vaccines are so critical. If this virus is in your community, it will find you and it is in every community. So that means you have to be prepared to get infected if youre not going to get vaccinated. And i dont think a lot of people realize that at this point. Dr. Osterholm, lets bring in laurie garrett, Pulitzer Winner and msnbc contributor. Laurie, happy 4th Of July. Let me bring you into the conversation and get your view on where we are as a country. We didnt meet the president s goal of 70 of the american people being vaccinated. Its 67 . So, do you think that our Vaccination Efforts are going as well as they should be . No, of course, not. And obviously i agree with dr. Osterholm on all of this. The real problem we have right now, according to the brandnew Washington Post poll is that we have about 29 of the american people saying im probably not going to get vaccinated, and 9 saying, i absolutely wont get vaccinated. These may not be in your neighborhood. They may not be people in your community because this is also skewed to specific areas geographically and politically. Republicans are far less likely to get vaccinated. The differential is astounding. 86 of democrats say they will get vaccinated, but only about 47 of republicans say so. So what were seeing now is this terrible skewing where, in certain parts of america where you have a high concentration of republicans, republican government leadership, you have very low Vaccination Rates. And simultaneously the arrival of the Delta Variant. So this Delta Variant and people have got to take this very seriously. This is not just some weird phrase. It really is a substantially more contagious and substantially more dangerous form of the covid19 virus. It is now concentrating in the areas with the lowest Vaccination Rates. So we have this perfect storm happening right now with political and social reluctance to get vaccinated coupled with the arrival of precisely the reason you should get vaccinated. A strain of the virus that is much more dangerous. And then the final Data Point, jonathan, is that almost 100 , 99. 5 of deaths in america to this virus right now are unvaccinated individuals. And, dr. Osterholm, that gets to a question i was about to ask you, and that is if you are vaccinated, double vaccinated, youve gotten both of your shots like i and my husband have, how worried should we be . How worried should the vaccinated be about this Delta Variant . Well, frankly, the vaccines called the mrna vaccines, the Pfizer And Moderna vaccines are performing very, very well. With one dose they surely can reduce the severity of illness and likely hospitalizations. With two doses, were seeing quite good protection even against milder illness, and definitely against serious illness and hospitalization, so get it. I think theres still some questions about the j j vaccine, although weve had good news this past week about the possibility that the antibody is going to be protective after one dose. I, like many of my colleagues right now, are saying we surely need more information quickly as to just how well thats going to work. The Bottom Line is you cant use the variant as a reason to not get vaccinated. You should use the variant to get vaccinated. If you dont believe it, look at places like missouri and arkansas right now where they are seeing the highest number of cases admitted to their Intensive Care Units theyve had at any time during the pandemic. Will that play out in other parts of the country . I dont know. I can surely tell you this. We have a lot of places in the united states just as vulnerable if not more vulnerable to this kind of situation as we see right now in missouri and arkansas. Umhmm. And, laurie, let me get you real quickly in the minute we have left. Theres a story in The New York Times with the headline masks again . Delta variant prompts reconsideration of precautions. It talks about how Los Angeles County and the World Health Organization says people should wear masks indoor. Some agree but urge a localized approach. Quickly, your reaction to that, should we be wearing masks again . This is obviously a moment of great confusion about how protective the vaccines are. The one Data Point i would look at is we have 180 Million vaccine doses administered, 180 Million americans, and only 4,000 and change have had breakthrough infections. So what that tells you is the vaccines, if properly administered and fully dosed, really do protect you. On the other hand, i personally always wear a mask when im in a public space. All right. Thank you very much. Laurie garrett, dr. Michael osterholm, thank you both very much for coming to The Sunday show. Coming up, the heat is real and so is climate change. We have an update on that Breaking News on pope francis. He was admitted to a Hospital Today for a scheduled surgery on his colon. According to a vatican spokesperson, Nbc News Correspondent Mollie Hunter joins us. Mollie, can you tell us whats going on . Reporter hey, jonathan, good morning. Good afternoon from here. So, the pope is 84 years old, of course, so any kind of medical procedure, any kind of surgical procedure we pay attention to. We got a statement from the holy see Press Office a while ago. The pope had gone in for surgery as you said for stenosis. The holy see Press Office said they would announce when the surgery was complete. Like i said, the pope 84 years old, generally in pretty good held, jonathan. He does suffer from sciatica. As a young man he had part of a lung removed, one lung removed. But really we havent seen that many serious medical conditions. Hours earlier we did see the Pope Today greeting crowds at st. Peters square as he always did. Last sunday when he did that, he asked for prayers for himself. Many people wondering today if he knew this was Coming Up and if he was making a special plea last week in preparation. Jonathan . All right, Mollie Hunter, thank you very much for that update on the popes condition. Now we turn to the heat. Its not your imagination. It really is getting hotter out there. The deadly Heat Waves that struck large portions of the country over the past week are just the latest examples of the effects of climate change. Oregon hit a record 116 degrees on monday. And the States Death Toll is nearing 100. Even canada was hit hard. With British Columbia reaching this is nuts a shocking 121 degrees on tuesday. Last august, scientific and health experts proposed that we start naming Heat Waves that are intense enough to do serious harm in the same way we name hurricanes. One of those experts joins me now. She is kathy mcleod, director of the asian irish resilience center. Kathy, great to see you. Thanks for coming to The Sunday show. Good morning, jonathan. Thanks for having me. Good morning, thank you. So, lets just start with some definitions here. What is a Heat Dome . A Heat Dome is where a combination of hot air gets stuck over an area and its caused by a push from the winter prior of a certain change in the temperature. And so its something that happens after the winter, and the air gets stuck over an area. And it cant change, so you get a long, long Heat Wave. And so now we had this Heat Dome over the pacific northwest. That town in British Columbia, 121 degrees, these things that have been happening are sort of examples of why you and other experts last august called for naming Heat Waves in the way that we do hurricanes. Why is naming a Heat Wave so important . Well, first, i think its important to say i think this is our new normal. And the international Energy Agency predicts the biggest set of emissions of Greenhouse Gas emissions in a decade for 2021. So its just getting hotter. And so its also important to know that heat is killing more americans than any other climatedriven hazard. And its called a silent killer. It has more deaths than fire, than hurricanes, than floods. And there are solutions. People dont have to die from heat. I mean, you are part of the rockefeller resilience center. Talk about resilience in the face of heat like this. Absolutely. We can be more resilient to heat, and one of the ways we can do that, and there are three big moves we need to make to do this. Naming and ranking Heat Waves is one of them. When you think about hurricanes, they have a hashtag. They have a name. Hurricanes and fires have a season, so there is an identity and a brand. And that awareness is what keeps people in knowledge of what they need to do to get prepared. If we had that kind of Awareness And Knowledge like we do for hurricanes, had a name and a season, we would see fewer deaths like we saw this week in canada and in the pacific northwest. You know, one of the things you sort of take these things for granted. We in the northeast are here in the midwest where i am, you have Air Conditioning because the summers are really hot. If you are in the northwest or British Columbia, up in canada, you dont have Air Conditioning. In fact, in the story that i read, the houses are actually constructed to retain heat, and so after naming Heat Waves and going through an experience like this, i mean, have you guys, you experts, come up with ways that folks in the pacific northwest, how they can better manage the heat without, you know, making themselves vulnerable for the winters that come . Absolutely. So, weve got a lot of things we need to do to get ready for this. Some of these things are infrastructure changes. You know, we saw Cable Cars buckling and roads are buckling and Airplanes Cant Fly at more than 120 degrees fahrenheit. And so our homes are not built for these temperatures. And so weve got some retrofitting to do. Weve got investment in cooling technologies, both Air Conditioning and in passive cooling. One of the biggest solutions is trees, our trees. Weve got to do more Urban Forestry to cool our neighborhoods and we need to raise awareness of how we move air in homes. And so weve got all sorts of solutions exist, but weve got to move quickly. The urgency just couldnt be greater. Kathy buffman mcleod, thank you for coming to The Sunday show. I really appreciate it on this holiday. Coming up, detroit experienced record breaking rain that left free ways and homes flooded. Well talk to Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence of michigan about why shes pressing the president on our Water Infrastructure. When technology is easier to use. Barriers dont stand a chance. I want a bucket of chicken. I want. Its the easiest because its the cheesiest. Kraft. For the win win. This is climate change, decades of investment and infrastructure, and this is whats happening. Weve had free ways that were flooded, weve had homes that were flooded. Last Week Detroit experienced historic flooding following more than a Half Foot of rain over a fivehour period. Now as President Biden makes his way through michigan this weekend and with an Infrastructure Bill in the works, one congresswoman is sounding the alarm to boost investments in Water Infrastructure. Not just bridges and roads. And she joins me now. She is Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence of michigan. Congresswoman lawrence, thank you very much for coming to The Sunday show. Thank you so much for having me, and happy 4th Of July. Thank you. Same to you. So, why is it important to you that people understand that infrastructure just isnt roads and bridges . I am from michigan and had the unfortunate experience of the Flood Water Crisis and learned firsthand how Drinking Water and the lack of investment has created a physical Lifechallenging Situation in our country. Its a crisis. Its not the only place where water has been contaminated by lead pipes. And now we just recently went through this flooding where we had combined pipes with sewer and water, and then the rainwater pushed the sewer back into the homes. And we had flooding. Water was rising to the ceiling of basements. You saw pictures of cars stalled on the highways. We have a crisis in america, and when we talk about infrastructure, im totally committed to that. But a pothole is an inconvenience. Drinking water is a necessity for life. And we must build, as President Biden has said, a climate resilient infrastructure. You know, the american society of civil engineers, congresswoman, you probably know this, but for the audience, they did a report on Detroits Infrastructure and Detroits Infrastructure on the report card, overall as you see right there, got a dplus. When it comes to dams, they got a cminus. When it comes to stormwater, it got a dminus. The report points out it determined an additional 4 Billion annually is needed to maintain the infrastructure there in michigan. Thats part of the problem that youre talking about, is that Water Infrastructure, the infrastructure related to water in michigan and around the country is crumbling and nothing is being done about it. We have kicked this can down the roadway too long and there is, you know, all of this anxiety to fix it and fix it now, which we must. One of the reasons why we had the flooding in detroit is because were prepared, our infrastructure, for 100year storm system. Well, its happening now every couple years where the level of water that is being placed into our infrastructure is exceeding the capacity. We must invest, and this concept of a climate resilient Infrastructure Plan where were looking at our roads, were looking at our bridges, were looking at our Water Infrastructure, were looking at our transit systems, were looking at electrifying our roads, how we build buildings. My goodness, its heartbreaking to see whats happening in florida. We can do better. We must do better. Our lives are contingent in America On Us and leadership in congress and in the White House to come together and sign a bill that will protect the american people. And i am so excited to have a president who is making the investment in infrastructure not a talking point, but an action item. He has laid out the framework. Now its time for congress to get together and make a plan, fund it, and get it started. Ive got to get you on two things. One of them is this. How confident are you that congress, you and your colleagues on both ends of the u. S. Capitol, can get an Infrastructure Bill passed and on the president s desk for his signature . Well, you know, i keep hope alive. I want you to know that the Stimulus Package that we passed as a congress, how amazing is that, that we actually did our job. We came together and we invested in the american people during a pandemic. We have done it. We have a pathway that we can get this done again. Im so Proud Of the bipartisan efforts. But at the end of the day, this is not about someones political reelectability. This is about getting the job done. I read a letter to the congressional leadership. Pelosi, schumer, mccarthy. I need you all to know that investment in our Water Infrastructure should not be an afterthought. It should be in the mainstream of our commitment to the american people. Again, water is a necessity for life. And, congresswoman, in less than 30 seconds, on this 4th Of July, what does america mean to you . America means to me a place that i truly love america, even though she didnt love me back. Theres been times throughout history where America Has hated me or abused me or enslaved me because of the color of my skin, because of my sex being a woman. But i believe because ive seen throughout history where american people have come together and demanded change in our democracy, support the opportunity to change it. It only works when americans stand up, use their voice, use their power of their vote. And this democracy works when we engage and get it done. So happy 4th Of July to everyone. Were not perfect, but i can tell you, this is one of the best democracies in The World. Herehere. Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence of michigan. Thank you very much for coming to The Sunday show. Defunding police, abolishing Cash Bail and releasing tens and tens and tens of thousands of dangerous criminals from jail. The radical left is bringing a nightmare of Mayhem And Lawlessness to every city, every suburb and every community in america. Welcome back to The Sunday show. We are anticipating an update soon on plans to demolish the rest of that collapsed Condo Building in surfside, florida, and we will bring it to you live. But first Donald Trump and the republicans have found their rhetorical targets for the midterms. Rising Crime Levels and politicians who want to, quote, defund the police. The new Washington Post Abc News Poll shows public concern over crime is growing, but this also comes amid a push for Police Reform that gained momentum after the murder of George Floyd. This week i had a chance to discuss this and much more with Minnesota Attorney general Keith Ellison who prosecuted former Police Officer Derek chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. Attorney general ellison, thank you very much for coming back to The Sunday show. Great to be back. Thanks. So, Washington Post has a poll out, a survey of americans saying that they are very worried about the rise in Violent Crime. Sure. There have been upticks in Violent Crime, but is it something that americans should be overly worried about . I think that Security And Safety are always important. I think that you should be cautious and a little reticent to just dive into any old solution, though. Because i think that when people are so concerned that they dont really discriminate as to whats the best answer, they could get into some answers that they will eventually not want. And what i mean by that is, look, you know, we started out in the 1960s pushing for change. Had some civil disturbances in there. And then that scared people so that we ended up with nixon. Then later on ten, 12, 15 years later we end up we have a public Health Epidemic known as crack cocaine. How did we respond . With the most draconian laws, a war on drugs. Right. And then we have we enforced a lot of things that now were trying to roll back. And that response is very different when people were hooked on and are hooked on opioids, which is getting a relatively more compassionate response, which is appropriate. So i say yes, we are experiencing a spike in Violent Crime. It is serious, but lets look at lets look at how we bring it down, as opposed to just sort of instinctively call for more harsh measures to try to alleviate that fear. Attorney general, there are a lot of people who sort of try to make this connection between the murder of George Floyd, the black Lives Matter demonstrations, the Mantra Of Defund the police, which is people taking the simplistic meaning of that. And then connecting that to the rise in crime, Violent Crime. Right. Do you see that connection . Is that a true connection . That is wrong, and it is politically opportunistic. Heres the thing. If the Violent Crime is associated with anything, it is associated with the pandemic. We know that all kinds of abuses are associated with the psychosocial reaction to the pandemic. We know that Opioid Abuse is up. Alcohol abuse is up. Domestic violence within homes is up. And people in the streets are, you know, theyre unemployed. Theres a lot of stress around housing issues. And we know that people sometimes lash out desperately whenever theres a heightened amount of Stress And Unemployment and economic issues. I think that if we respond with a strong summer jobs program, that if we respond to some communityled Violence Intervention like groups like mad dads, his works united, ceasefire chicago, these communityled interventions, we can arrest this spike in Violent Crime without having that draconian response that historically we have seen. So it sounds like given what you just said in that last answer, what President Biden proposed in his speech on crime yeah. Is something that you think is the right way to go. Its informed. Its well informed by data and its designed to create a higher level of safety. Where as other proposals, i dont know if theyre concerned about safety as much as they are just wanting to have a harsh reaction against people they view to be unlike themselves. In other words, people of color. You know, you wrote an oped for the Washington Post where you called on called for a lot of things to deal with Police Reform. Yes. Key among them is the passage of the George Floyd justice in policing act. Absolutely. When you and i talked about Washington Post live, you said dont make perfect the enemy of the good. I did say that. So where do you think things are right now . Here we are in july and it still there was announcement of a framework, but No Ones seen it. Why do you think its taking so long . Heres what Im Hearing. Ill tell you what Im Hearing because, you know, i used to be in congress for 12 years. So i check in with my friends on capitol hill. Im hearing that as the Protest Energy has dissipated, the level of urgency has dissipated. And Im Hearing that a lot of the organizations, Fraternal Order Of Police groups are opposing. And Im Hearing that the combination of the upsurge from the right and the mellowing of the other side is allowing people to stall. And so i know that Congressman Clyburn is very concerned. Hes trying to pull some things out. I think what the average citizen can do is say, no, we still want Police Reform. The average citizen can call can have some peaceful marches demanding that we have Police Reform and can really energize that movement again because i think that people have noticed that the demand from last summer simply doesnt have the same level of urgency. So i would say, you know, let your voice be heard and give folks like Karen Bass and jim clyburn and even Tim Scott a motivation to really, really get that done. Are you surprised you left out Cory Booker. Booker, yes. Senator from new jersey. But youve got senator Cory Booker, democrat, black man, new jersey. Senator Tim Scott, black man, republican, south carolina. Why do you think its taken so long for those two men, plus Karen Bass yeah. To come up with a plan, get it out and get it done . Well, you know, i dont really want to blame anybody. I will say that it is important for Tim Scott to understand that this needs to get done. It is important. I dont think i need to convince Cory Booker it needs to be done. I think cory knows that. Karen bass knows that. Tim has been given an opportunity to do great good for people. Its not an opportunity he wants to drag his feet on. People will recognize you not just because of your tenure in congress, but also because you were the person who was tasked with bringing together the team that got the guilty verdict against Derek Chauvin. Right. Now that the sentencing has passed, 22 1 2 years, are you satisfied with that result . You know, jonathan, im glad you asked that because the word the word satisfied, i cant really get my arms around. You know, George Floyd is gone and hes not coming back. The only thing we can do is try to prevent further victims. And that means that the 22 1 2, im not going to appeal the sentence, but its Cold Comfort for the family. And ill also say that i am a little concerned about some of the things that were said in the Sentencing Memo because i think that the children were traumatized. And the judge very correctly said that there was particular cruelty to George Floyd. I think the judge was right. The judge said that Derek Chauvin abused his position of authority. I think thats right. But then the judge said he was not going to use the trauma of the kids to enhance the sentence because he said that they didnt seem traumatized to him. Well, first of all, they dont have to be traumatized. They just have to witness the violence against George Floyd. But secondly, i think they were traumatized, and that was shown by the tears on the stand. So Thats Something in terms of the analysis that i wish were different. But im not going to argue about the time. You know, you mentioned earlier something about further victims and, of course, my mind immediately went to daunte wright. Oh, my goodness, yes. Correct me if im wrong. Are you charged with moving that case along as well, the same as with George Floyd . Yes, sir. Where are things . Well, we have a Trial Date of December 6. Its important for me to be careful here because the defendant Kim Potter is still awaiting trial. She is presumed innocent. We have the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. For me to say much of anything might influence the jury, so im going to just say that we believe in the charges that i filed. Were reviewing the case. And were getting ready for that December 6 Trial Date. On this July 4th weekend, i guess it would be malpractice if i didnt ask you this question. On americas birthday, could you just tell me what does america mean to you . America is like i have love for my country. I stand with my nation. Im Proud Of it. But i also understand that something my mom used to say, you dont love folks because theyre perfect. And so my love for my country is with full knowledge of 250 years of slavery, 100 years of jim crow, and societal disparities to this very second. Its full knowledge of all that. Im proud that my country has, you know, within itself gotten rid of slavery. No foreign power came to end slavery in america. Is right now holding armed actors of the state, law enforcement, responsible for their actions, which is another good development, but its always been a tugofwar, man. The folks who believe in Liberty And Justice for all versus the folks who believe in privileges for themselves and people they view to be like themselves, theres always been that tension, you know. And were in the middle of that tension, and i feel blessed to be playing a role in pulling, pulling the side toward Liberty And Justice for all. Will the side of Liberty And Justice for all prevail . Yes. A lot of people are concerned that tugofwar, we might lose that tugofwar. Were not going to win that tugofwar. Were going to win that tugofwar. But its going to take everybody. And its even going to take some people who are on the other side. The people on the other side who fear loss of a fair society, i dont want fairness because if im on the top side of the Power Equation and we have equality, that means ive lost something. You wont lose anything. Youre going to be better off if america is freer, more equal, more just. On the other side of this struggle is a better america, so i ask everybody to join it on this 4th Of July. George floyds Girlfriend Courtney Ross delivered that powerful testimony in the trial of Derek Chauvin back in april. Providing some of the most compelling details of floyds life, personality, and character. Friday morning i sat down with miss ross. Take a look. Courtney ross, thank you so much for coming to The Sunday show. Thank you, jonathan. So, watching the trial, the moment you came on the screen, you hadnt even said a word. I said, who is this person . And then you started telling the story of you and floyd, as you call him. I remember tweeting out at the time, she didnt love its not that she loved, past tense, George Floyd. She still does. You still do more than a year later. Umhmm, more than ever. Why . I, i learned quickly after floyd died that our spirits have been together for a long time. This hasnt been our first rodeo. Weve been connected throughout this journey in the universe, and i know after this well be together again. I know that. Our souls are united. Im with him all the time. His spirit is constantly with me. How does that manifest itself, his spirit . I hear him. Im in need and need his strength and his Big Arm around me, because i miss that the most, and i can feel him. He keeps me on a path right now. He is trying to make sure that i stay steady to our goals and our future that we had talked about. So he keeps me in the right place at the right time. What are those goals . My favorite one thats exciting to me is opening up a restaurant. Floyd and i for a long time had talked about opening a restaurant that provided sustainable employment for people that had prior convictions. In the interview you did with my Washington Post Colleague Robert samuels, you said to him that your therapist said to you, theres George Floyd and theres floyd. Yes. And if i dont keep that straight in my head, ill go crazy. Yes. Because George Floyd is what people want him to be. Floyd is who he is. What people want him to be what do you think people want him to be . Ive seen George Floyd represented in so many different ways now. Hes a movement. He represents a lot of organizations and a lot of activists and a lot of boots on the ground. Some of the things that i see coming out of his name dont necessarily jive with what he was about. Floyd was a very peaceful man, nonviolent. He spent his entire time in minneapolis securing people. His jobs were always in security so he could take care of people. Not so he could be a big tough guy. That was never the goal. He wanted to make sure everyone was okay and make sure everything was all right. So anyone that ive seen that uses his name In The Name Of violence or hatred, thats where i really struggle. You were, before we started talking on camera, you were talking about how do you know at George Floyd square, the things that are happening down there are making you very angry. Yeah, its a struggle for me because right now there is such a divide. There is the people at Floyd Square that want things one way. Theres the politicians that want things another way. I know floyd. I know floyd to not believe in divisiveness. He believed in people coming together. So its difficult for people to use his name for their cause when that is not something he would necessarily believe in. I know floyd, and i know that he would want whats best for the entire community. Im not exactly sure what that looks like, but i know it doesnt look like anything that is divisive. You know, also in this profile by robert, which is a fantastic profile if Anyone Hasnt read it. Yes. You were talking about the reaction to you on the stand. I knew the day that he was going to be found guilty. But until then, ive always been kind of aware of the fact that i was with floyd, im a white woman, hes a black man. People in this Day And Age are still unsure of what that means, and its just love. Its very simple. But people try to make it more complicated than that. So when i went on the stand and i told the truth, i thought, what if i ruin this case and it comes with a completely different verdict and i caused this movement to just crush . And thank god floyd, like he always told me, just Tell The Truth. Hed tell me, im the truth. Tell the truth, babe. I told the truth, and this time it came through in the justice system, you know, the one time. You have said that everyones got their own thing going because of floyd. Everyones on this journey, and i still dont know what to do or what to feel. That was in april. Here we are in july. Yeah. Do you know yet . Im feeling like i can follow our path more now. I was so trapped in grief. Jonathan, i could not get out of bed. I could not get out of my house. I used to be the type of person that, you know, flitted around like a butterfly. I liked jumping from place to place, being with my former students and family. And i was trapped. I was paralyzed for so long. And once the day of him dying came, may 25th, i felt like because i made it a year, that maybe i could start working on some things that we wanted to do. And now im starting to take those small steps to get to where we wanted to be. And when i do that, were just so close that i feel so strong, so i know that i know im on the right path. I know im supposed to be here today because he wanted me to. Since we are in the 4th of July Weekend ooh, um. Im asking everyone this question. Okay. What does on americas birthday, what does america mean to you . Ooh. Theres different americas for everybody. I always talk about what White America looks like, and Thats Nothing i really identified with in my life, even though im very clear im a white woman. But the mentality behind what it means to be a White American never fit my heart because i think there is such embedded racism in White America that theres so much work to do that i wouldnt want my heart to understand that yet. But as far as 4th Of July goes, i mean, i was talking about it with my son last night. Hes 13. He said, you know, mom, why do we spend the money on all these things we advertise and spend money on Fire Works . Why couldnt we take that money and do Something Else . Youre completely right. Why do we spend time celebrating a place that is killing our citizens on the street when we could be doing Something Else with that time and money . So this year its not hard. Ill be celebrating, ill be spending it with my family like i always do, but its going to take some work for me to celebrate this country again, to be honest. Courtney ross, thank you so much for spending time with me. Thank you. Thank you so much for coming to The Sunday show. Thank you. This comes four years after New Orleans removed four confederate monuments. It was a process that actually started in 2015 and is the Focal Point of the Neutral Ground, a new documentary by roy wood, jr. , and c. J. Hunt, that delivers a compelling history on White Supremacy and explains why it continues to hold so much power in america. And joining me now are roy wood, jr. , and c. J. Hunt. Gentlemen, thank you both for coming to The Sunday show. Congratulations on an incredible documentary. I watched it from beginning to end. Thank you. It is serious, but it is also, in parts, funny. C. J. , the conversation between you and your dad towards the beginning is hilarious. But, roy, ill start with you. Why was it important to do this documentary . I think at the daily show, c. J. And i have known Each Other for a couple years. Hes been my Field Producer on a lot of the things i go out on. The things we edit, we only have enough time on the daily show to show the causation of an issue and the solution to an issue. The Neutral Ground is able to accomplish both of those. Put it all into what burrito. Also explore why people feel the way they feel and really ask the question of whether or not the country can be saved from that train of thought. Whether or not you can shift can these Old Dogs learn new tricks basically. Im not sure if they can. No, the answer is no, they cannot. Spoiler alert. I dont want to spoil the movie, but yes, yes, i think the way we talk about racism or have talked about it for years, how do we get the other side to change their opinion. How do we get the other side to believe whats true. Part of this, part of the power of this film is that there are folks on the other side who are so invested in a myth of, you know, White Supremacy doesnt exist today, in fact, its never existed and its always been about states rights. This film is an investigation of what that type of politics does to our hold now. I want to show a clip from the documentary because it starts by talking about the Monument Fight in New Orleans. But there was this moment in charlottesville, c. J. , that i thought was really compelling. Lets watch that. I still wanted just one final shot of the monuments fight spreading to another city. Luckily my friend, a Photographer Youve met a few times, was on his way to such a place. So i joined him on a Road Trip to a rally uniting the defenders of another lee statue. Who, who, who, who, who, who. Were terrified. C. J. , it was that moment. You could see it in your face hearing the chants. I didnt know this would be part of the documentary. But seeing charlottesville from another angle from Someone Else who was there filming and to see just the raw emotion coming from you, this is terrifying. I was terrified watching it on television from home and terrified again watching it in that documentary. Talk more about that. Im glad you were terrified. I think we should all be terrified. You know, i think, i think that is part of the take away of the film, that, you know, we made this film because i just wanted to film how hard people would hang onto four statues in New Orleans where i was living. Thats it. Just a film about municipal property moving from here to there. Can we Tell The Truth enough about the past that we can move four objects from this part of town to this part of town . And the fact that Filming Monuments then brings us into a film with extremists and with terrorists and in charlottesville, i think says a lot about america. That the story we tell about the past, about slavery being not that bad and about it just being a confusion about states rights and, you know, the south rising, thats not just a difference in history. Thats a lie that emboldens people to take lives now. That story, that lie that we let live, that has a price. And we saw that price in charleston and we saw that price in charlottesville. And, roy, let me get this right. Roy, youre the Executive Producer. And c. J. , you are the Star And Director of this. Thank you, star is the correct word. Right. Executive producer means i dont go out there. Thats what that means. Okay, thats what i was slyly asking. Were you out there in the streets with them Tiki Torches . No, no, you are the star, sir. You go out there. Theres also confederate reenactment. Heres the thing. Trevor noah sent me out enough to do this adventure, i will support this on the creating and shaping Side And Post production side. When its time to be on camera, you need to be there. At that point in charlottesville, i think the other thing that we hadnt anticipated from 2015 to now was the perception of the media and the presence of media at events like that. And you know, when you show up now with a camera, its kind of putting a target on your back. So it definitely was something that went from a more casual piece in terms of the level of danger to something that was approaching January 6 type energy. All right. So, weve got a minute left and i need both of you to answer this question quickly. C. J. First. What does america mean to you on this July 4th . I think america is an unkept promise, right. Like, the fact that its a promise makes us hopeful and excited. And the fact that it is unkept makes us i think mournful. And i think July 4th is about celebrating the principle of the promise, what it should be, you know, in the same way like going to the dentist is about the principle of flossing and a time to measure it how we measure up to that principle. And the fact that we ignore a thing means that we are bleeding. Thats what July 4 is for us. Top that. July 4th is the day we celebrate when we got our freedom so we could have the freedom to deny other people their freedom. Usa. Exactly right. He was eloquent. You said we had a minute. I dont have time to be eloquent. Were going to have to have you both back so you can have more time to hold forth. Roy wood, jr. , c. J. Hunt, thank you so much for coming to The Sunday show. So the reminder is in a storm like this where you could see sustained Power Outages, if you do have a generator, you have to operate that generator so that the exhaust is outside. You cant put it inside your house. You cant put it inside your garage. And unfortunately, we have tragic incidences every year now where folks will run those generators in an enclosed area, so please, if you do have Power Outage and if you have a generator that youre going to use, make sure that that exhaust is going outside your home and outside your garage. We dont want to see any other fatalities as a result of the carbon monoxide. Were going to be continuing to monitor the storm. I think in terms of the impacts for surfside, which we are obviously concerned about, could see some gusts, but it has tracked west over the last day and a half more so than the initial forecast. So well just keep watching that and well be ready, but were prepared to deal with the impacts of the tropical storm in the keys and on the West Coast of florida, and then obviously were going to continue with the mission in surfside. Were supporting the Demolition And Anything the county has asked for well support it and well continue to support it, and obviously we want to get those Search And Rescue folks back on the pile. Thanks. Thank you, governor. Lieutenant Governor Jeannette Mun questions. Munez. Good morning. [ speaking in spanish ] florida officials are updating the State And Everyone on whats happening in surfside. Also with the impending tropical Storm Elsa thats Barrelling Down On Florida when we came into this presser. You saw Governor Desantis updating everyone. You see him standing behind the woman who is speaking now. We will keep tabs on this as the day goes forward. Now we turn to the ongoing debate over the telling of americas history. Former new Orleans Mayor Mitch landrew garnered praise for his campaign to rid the city of confederate monuments. Instead of celebrating the confederacy, we can celebrate New Orleans and Set The Tone for the next 300 years. The confederacy was on the wrong side of history and humanity. It sought to tear apart and you gate our fellow americans to slavery. This is a history we should never forget and one we should never, ever again put on a pedestal to be revered. He gave that incredible speech as the last of four confederate statues in New Orleans was being rightfully put into the dumpster of history. Today Mitch Landrew is the Founder And President of E Pluribus Unit working to fight systemic racism nationwide and fulfill the promise of equal justice for all. He joins me now. Mayor, great to see you. Thank you for coming to the subbed show. Good morning. Its great to be with you. So, i have you on following roy wood, jr. , and c. J. Hunt because you are a Focal Point of their documentary. You formed e. Pluribus unum after that. You asked a question during the interview whether people can learn and be different. I believe that we can. Today as we celebrate July 4th, people asking whats this holiday about, is it about who america is, what we and We The People means. And i agree with what one of them said. America is an unfinished promise. The thing that separates us as a nation is that we made a commitment to Each Other many, many years ago to come to the table and it indicates we havent performed that well in order to keep that promise for everybody. So i believe that for america to become who she said she wants to be, for us to become as great as our potential, we have to find a way to bring people together across race and across class. And there are a lot of examples of us being great, and examples of us falling down. The interviews youve had today with courtney and with them, a line runs all the way through the monuments to George Floyd. And from back and forth. And so we have a lot of work to do in this country to be who we say were going to be. Mitch, because of the Breaking News, we are out of time. But ive got to get you on one last thing, what does america mean to you . Ten seconds. Well, america means joy and freedom, but we cant go forward unless we go forward together. So we are an unfinished promise, but one that has great potential for all of us if we can get it right. Mitch landrew, we are going to have you bag back for a fuller segment. Thank you, jonathan. Throughout the show on this July 4th holiday, youve heard me ask guest as simple question, what does america mean to you . Before i give my own thoughts, im bringing in one of your favorite guests, Aunt Gloria, to give hers. Aunt gloria, the floor is yours. Well, jonathan, ive thought about it, and this is what i have to say about the holiday. The first thing that came to my mind was i dont have any feelings about the fourth of july. It only means fireworks and cookouts. I had to think why it is a holiday. As an africanamerican, juneteenth is the holiday im most Proud Of. When the country was free not when the country was free, but when my ancestors were free. So what i did, i contacted a friend who has been a citizen for seven or eight years to see what she what freedom means to her. To her shes in a nation that provides freedom, protection, and opportunities. I guess these are things that americans take for granted. And i had to think, does it mean that to me . Maybe i feel that way once i feel im equal to everyone. But for now, it means a day off, fireworks and cookouts. Thank you, jonathan. Thanks, Aunt Gloria. But im going to differ with you slightly. Thats not to say youre wrong. America doesnt make it easy to love her. As James Baldwin famously said in a Radio Interview 60 years ago, quote, to be a negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a state of rage almost all of the time. Baldwins words havent aged one bit. No, ours is not a perfect nation. Our nation our history is fraught and our future as a democracy is under threat from a narcissistic former president , a republican party loyal to him instead of the constitution, and a Supreme Court that keeps making it easier for states to make it harder to vote. And yet, i believe america will prevail, because when that arc of the universe has bent towards justice in america, more often than not it was at the insistence of we, the people. President biden is fond of reminding us america is the only country in The World based on an idea. Well, we, the people, are the foundation of that idea. We, the people, are the protectors of that idea. And if america is to live up to that idea at home and remain a beacon of hope abroad, then we, the people, will have to demand it by voting out every republican putting party over the patriotism this perilous moment demands. For Aunt Gloria, im jonathan capehart, and this has been The Sunday show. When technology is easier to use. Barriers dont stand a chance.
