Where ever it goes even if it leads to trumps doorsteps. Let me ask you something, will you call trump . Let me say this, well have a good commitment And professional investigators And well have the best that we have to offer to help us to conduct this investigation. Where ever the facts lead us, chris, well call. The facts lead you to trump, will you call trump . If the facts lead us there And our investigators say that best interest, well look at it. There is something ironic And poetic that this is all happening when the country is celebrating the american Reserve Aleutian And others are fighting an american evolution. The footage released by The New York Times this week paints a frightening picture of what was happening on the steps of capitol on that faithful day of january. Reporter some hear as words to call for action. You have to show strength. You have to be strong. Yeah take the capitol building. Take the capitol right now well be marching to the capitol building. It is clear in that video, joining me now members of And-service'>House And Service of the committee, ruben gallego. Thank you for your service. Why the push to make this . The most important thing that we have seen is We Saw the insurrection happening live on tv. So the hope by this happening some republicans on there is we can actually convince america that this actually happens. The fact that we have bipartisan members thats going to do their job. We have to see what mccarthy does which is really up in the air. I mean speaking of mccarthy, we remember the conversation that was recorded out between him And trump, he said who the F Word are you talking to the former president. We saw men punching the window with barehAnds with this rage. Republican members who may join this committee. I am not making any threats but as you know how congress works. You get elected by your district And you get your committee from your conference. I dont know where someone would get their Committee Assignment from the speaker And expect to have a conference as well. Hes not making threats. Hell likely be subpoena as well. Will we hear from him testifying for this commission . We should. He was very much in contact with the president that day. Number two, some of his colleagues were involved in the planning of the insurrection as members of congress. Lastly, you know he says i dont know any members of history that gets their assignment from oppose parties. I dont remember the insurrection And, the fact that mccarthy is spineless And trying to win election And becomes speaker of the house And throwing our democracy out the window is the biggest problem we have here. It is soulless And, men like mccarthy And women, i apologize, caused January 6th. It was not just the people on the microphone or sending out emails. It was the people like mccarthy basically fed donald trump because they were afraid. He has no souls or courage to stAnd up to people like donald trump. You are saying members of congress who fed this insurrection, do you think some of your colleagues actually helped And aided this insurrection. There was footage of one of the people stormed the capitol going to the border with republicans this week. You work alongside some of these people. Do you feel safe working in the capitol And do you think some of your colleagues are apart of this . I feel safe. Is democracy safe . When you have members of congress that are involved in my opinion in the insurrection then we should not feel safe. Do i think theyre involved . Just yesterday we had a member from arizona sending out an email accusing fbi staging the January 6th insurrection. Maybe you didnt open the door to allow these rioters in but certainly by inciting people And sending out emails And continuing the lie, you are just as bad. At some point i would like to know if there was directly indication between some of the oath keepers, proud boys that stormed the capitol. Yeah, i think thats one thing that the committee is definitely going to have to explore. You talk about the proud boys And other race that stormed the capitol. Something that you addressed, general millie talked about white rage And the need to understAnd this And why this led to January 6th which is an uncomfortable conversation that the country does not want to confront but we have to do that. You are in the military And at least 20 of these people were also in the military. There is been Record Number of white Supremacy Issue in the military, why do you think that is And what can be done about it . Do you see or witness it during your time . There is going to be a lot of people caught up of the insurrection. The military is still majority white male And the majority that are caught up in the insurrection are white male. It is dangerous that you have people trained by the government And turning around And start fighting the government. Did i experience it . Yes, i did. It was not all the time. I did get people calling me different names, different derogatory, names being latino And it is part of something that still occurs. I think what general millie is trying to talk about And what people are missing is that we are a representation of the country. When we are doing our jobs, we need to know exactly what is happening within our military And if there is reasons, we need to root it out. It ends up being horrific to our readiness. The fact that there is people outside And members of congress, thats ridiculous. Why would we be looking at what is structurally wrong within the military. It is not that we are trying to make the military bad or trying to expose it. We are trying to make it better And stronger. The more that you allow these types of whether it is racism or sexism, you allow it to permeate in the military, you are eroding the strength of the military which is unity And cohesion. I think there is a lot of people in congress that are basically trying to, theyre trying to play the Culture War And really stop evolution of this country. Yeah, i hope that you share your experiences in the military with Defense Secretary Lloyd austin. I want to switch gears a little bit. Your state upheld a Lower Court that deemed Ballot Cast in the wrong precincts to be thrown out. This is trying to impact voters of color in your state, what impact does this have And what is the federal government going to do about it since we have seen one voting Rights Effort failed. This is targeted at latinos, i was a political activist back in the day. The way i learned is from republican members, republican precincts saying, they taught me that skill. We used that to get latinos elected. Thats when they started passing these laws, right . It was okay to use all these different types of methods to vote until people of color started voting. What does it mean in terms of not being about harvest And voting out of precincts . It means nothing in arizona. We converted people to vote early anyway And returning ballots. We have universal sites. The biggest problem though is it is struck on section two of the voting Rights Act which is very difficult for us to deal with it. In order for us to sue them, we have to actually show it is a fact, right . By us doing that, it is going to take forever. Theyre going to be able to pass these laws And suppress our votes And win the election And by the time we actually can get some type of settlement or some type of relief, it is going to be too late, right . This is something that John Roberts have been trying to do the last 20 years. It is very unfortunate And it is going to directly target us. What should we do . Jones And i have introduced a Bill To Reenforce Section Ii to the voting Rights Act. We need to get rid of the filibuster. None of this happens until we get rid of the filibuster. Go ahead. Well, we are running out of time. I want to say the fact that it is going to be really hard to pass. You have to come back because we have so much more to talk about. I will end this segment with the same way we began it. America, we are indeed in danger. Dont go anywhere at home. Up next, the strange reaction that some of you have of Bill Cosbys sudden release from prison. Stay with us. Cosbys sudden release from Prison Stay with us when technology is easier to use. Barriers dont stAnd a chance. Thats why well stop at nothing to deliver our technology asaservice. Riders, the lone wolves of the great highway. T all they need is a bike And a full tank of gas. This is not just a black thing this is for all the people who have been imprisoned wrongfully regardless of race, color or creed. Because i met them in there. Okay, Bill Cosby victimized many playing the victim now, thats quite rich. After admitting to giving Women Quaalude for the purpose of having sex with them, the disgraced man walked out of prison a free man this week after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court tossed his sexual assault conviction. Cosby insisted it was consensual but the Pennsylvania Justices ruled his rights to Due Process was violated in a previous case was used to prosecute him in sub subsequent charges. While some in the black community are congratulating him, whats wrong with You Guys . They should remember how eager he was to criticize them in the past. Joining me now to discuss, christina grier, we finally got her on the show. And our jason johnson, finally onset with me. All right, You Guys, this is quite a strange case to me. I will start with you christina, whats up with people congratulating Bill Cosby being free. He admits giving quaalude to women for the purposes of having sex with him. Hes free because of a technicality. Hes not free because hes innocent. This is where we start to see class trump. Now Bill Cosby like to say i am like so many victims who are incarcerated. Bill cosby is not one of those individuals. For those black folks that i have talked to who are on defense And they think is a witch hunt, lets just say of the 60 women technically who have not come forward that Bill Cosby drugged And raped them, lets say Argument Sake that 90 were lying. That still leaves six women who were abused And we know 90 were not lying. So this is sadly, we have not had a real conversation within the black community because Bill Cosby was americas dad. He was definitely for a lot individuals their father. He was the one introducing them to different world. All the things, right . The fact that hes dr. Cosby And setting that up And he choos to be believing what the Court System had shown And what he admitted to putting us in a situation that we are explaining to people some of the atrocity he committed over the course of 30 or 40 years. Right, thats why i wanted to have this conversation. I didnt want to focus on the legality. The information baffles me. I want you to listen to the speech he gave in 2004, take a listen And i will get your reaction on the other side. These are people going around stealing cocacola And people getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of Pound Cake. Then we all run out And we are outraged. The cops should not have shot him. What the hell was he doing with a Pound Cake in his hAnd . This baffles me. Snoop And all these other rappers coming out to his defense. I didnt realize cocacola And Pound Cake was a death sentence. We have all been having conversations about this for years. Bill cosby aint our dad. Not one that any One Of Us will be happy with or respected at this particular point. His hostility towards black people should have a lot of people backing away from this guy a long time ago. You have a lot of people out there that are so distrustful of the system. I i remember oj. There were people cheering. Yo, this guy used to beat his wife, why is everyone excited just because he beat the system . Oj too was not down to black people. Christie, i will turn back to you, it is hard to separate dr. Huggable from the serial rapist Bill Cosby. It is almost like he created the intention like to sanitize him. I am curious, should we still be watching the Cosby Show in a different world. I will watch it forever. It is important to the culture And i can separate the art from the artist but in all the group chats, thats what we are talking about. What does it mean for his legacy in terms of the Tv Show . I am torn on that one. The Cosby Show And the different world. I include little And-fat'>Bill And Fat albert introduced to a lot of people. Is it my reality . A lot of people went to hbcu because of the Cosby Show. It is difficult because i dont listen to r. Kellys music but i still listen to a different world. We are in this moment where we are trying to detangle what has been done allegedly by some of these men And going back to the point that jason made, this And-respectability'>Politics And Respectability is so insidious in the black community as well that we have people cheering on Bill Cosby. Right. And look we have to talk about felicia rashards tweet that was such a disappointment to me. I love her as a performer And when i saw that i was heartbroken. She tweeted this out on her first day at Howard University as dean of the fine Arts Department which Cast A Dark Shadow over that wonderful experience, she basically supported that he was in jail in the first place. Howard was like clean up on isle six, we need to come out And adjust this. On a scale of bad fumbling. This is really bad. A huge mistake. And the reaction tiffany, we talk about politics but also this is generational. Okay, your current hbcu students, you know who their dad was . Dray from blackish. A lot of people who are stAnding for him are in their late 30s or 40s or even people our parents age. How would her response make sense . Shutting up is always free. The larger issue is we have to separate these actors from who they are. I can still watch the Cosby Show. I would say Bill Cosby did horrible things that i dont respect And appreciate. We got to separate the work from the worker. Yes. I completely agree. I dont want to get lost in this conversation are the victims. The victims suffered tremendously And so i know Felicia Reshad said she stAnds with the victims. I want to say thank you to those who spoke up. Keep speaking up And tell your stories. This is a scary time to live in where people are defending this kind of behavior. So this segment is way too fast. It could have gone a lot longer. Thank you Christie Grier And jason johnson. Coming in, next, our walls are soon 45. Stay tuned. Ed vo the subaru crosstrek. Dog tested. Dog approved. When our daughter And her kids moved in with us. Our Bargain Detergent Couldnt keep up. Turns out its mostly water. So, we switched back to tide. One wash, stains are gone. Daughter slurping dont pay for water. Pay for clean. Its got to be tide. These charges are unique. It sets a precedent that in 2044 years, we have not had a local prosecutor go after a former President Of The United States or his employees or his company. Frankly not just a lawyer but as a citizen, we are very concerned about that. Yeah, donald trump And his lawyer should be concerned especially after the Trump Organization And its cfo, allen weisselberg, were charged in what prosecutors call a sweeping 15year scheme to avoid paying taxes to uncle sam. The court in a 63 decision up he will the restrictive Voting Laws in arizona which can make it harder challenging these laws in the future. Joining us now is Justice Correspondent for the nation. Elie. We can get into this Trump Weisselberg And the scAndal. The Question Everyone wants to know is will trump face any consequences for all of the things he accused of or things We Saw him do with our own eyes And ears. The same is true now during every investigation since he came down the escalator. As long as he finds people who are willing to go to jail for him, hell walk away. Thats how it always works for Mob Bosses And thats how it is working for trump right now. He keeps finding these sycophant themselves in jail for him. Hell be put in hAndcuffs so hell not have to tell the truth about his boss, trump. Hes 73. I cant picture him going to jail. These people may be in the cross hairs, what may they know And offer up to prosecutors for lesser sentencing. I think it is probably going to be more information of weisselberg. I understAnd that organization is paramount, all information gets funnel to the top And it is Weisselbergs Name on all the checks And Weisselbergs Name on all receipts. It is very bad for weisselberg. I dont think anybody believes that weisselberg can go to the bathroom without getting a Hall Pass from donald trump but if he says no i did it all on my own, trump is going to walk And Wise Weisselberg is going to be in jail. Again, i dont know where the loyalty comes from. Weisselberg is fot not talking either. I cant get my dogs to eat my socks And trump gets his dogs to go to jail. Ah we keep on saying the loyalty they have on him. I want to switch gear And talk about Voting Rights. I am concerned the court will not be able to save Voting Rights given what happened in the supreme court this week And with the gutting section ii, Where Do We Go From Here . This was a devastating blow. There is a critical line supporting our time which is what that decision is. There is a critical line. He says as long as the restriction is a Mirror Inconvenience thats racially desperate. If you are inconveniencing black voters And brown voters on purpose. As long as the court can call it a Mirror Inconvenience And you can run the entire system through that section. Thats what the court is going to do. I saw you had representative callego earlier, these people putting on great laws. If you dont expAnd the court, not just the supreme court but the Lower Courts too in desperate need of expansion. If you dont expAnd the court, you cant win this fight. There is no law that the court can overturn And there is no constitutional amendment that the court can overlook. So if you dont have the court, you dont have anything. We didnt get any Retirement News from justice briar. Well see how expAnding the courts go And if Joe Biden will get a supreme court pick. I feel like we should do this with you every week. After the break i will talk to my friend, the author claims the phrase the culture is cruelty. You dont want to miss that, stay with us. Cruelty. You dont want to miss that, stay with us it didnt get us to the moon. It doesnt ring the bell on wall street. Or disrupt the status quo. Oh um, doug can we talk about something other than work, its the weekend. Yeah, yeah. [ squawk ] hot dog or. Chicken . [ squawk ] only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Life can be a lot to hAndle. This magic moment, but theres plenty of magic in all that chaos. So different And so new. Was like any other. The cruelty is a point, it became a frame of the trump era. It does not just refer to the Character Flaw of one very cruel man, cruelty is also built into our government. It is a theme that runs throughout And even predates our countrys founding 245 years ago. Joining me now is adam serwer. His new book the cruelty is the point. Adam, very excited to have you here. This book is so amazing. I was texting you And i was reading, you are so dope. You really cover a lot in here. You dont just talk about trump. You write that people And in order for white And-racism'>Supremacy And Racism to work, one side have to paint the other as the enemy And be convinced this other side is going to destroy them And set out to destroy them. Why do you think that people assume people of color, the majority of this country is seeking to industry them . Part of this is, first of all, thank you for that kind introduction. I think our system as it is set up really incentivizes that kind of politics. The structure of our system allows one party to hold power without winning the majority of the votes. It is what you see on Fox News every night, the liberals are going to do x, y, And z And theyre going to ruin everything And impose Socialism Or Communism or whatever. This is how you justify a system thats disenfranchise And people denying their basic rights under the political process. You are doing it not because your militias or whatever but you are doing it for your own survival. That makes it acts of cruelty towards that group heroic because you are defending that group being attacked for no reason. So what do you say to people who support trump. His policies are cruel, he was cruel. Some people say oh well, you know, i didnt like his language but i support his policy. Is cruelty the point for them as well . I dont want to get into Mind Reading in terms of what they think, i can only describe what they did or what trump did or what he thinks they believe or what they want from him. The clearest thing about this whole situation is that trump anticipated what his supporters would like And they liked it. People can make judgment based on his own understAnding of his base And the intimacy they created with each other because he knows them And they know him better than i could ever assume or construct And understAnd what their relationship is. I am just basing this observations of how he relates to that. I will say cruelty is the point intentionally or unintentionally. I want to switch gear because you also write about police union, something thats not talked about enough in the Criminal Justice space. You referenced the most iconic images of Police Brutality were the Birmingham Police having dogs on protesters And the atlantic Andling'>Cops MishAndling Martin Luther King after arresting him at a sitin. Police union were born out of that. Talk a little bit about that. Well, they predate that but they certainly exploited the term of the civil rights movement. The theme of the book is that if a system is designed to exclude certain people or exploit certain people, it is insufficient even if that person is sincere in their intentions because the system will produce the outcome thats designed to produce. You have to change the system. With policing we have a system of impunity that unions have an interest in maintaining And that impunity corrodes their relationship with the public because they are advocating essentially for the able to use violence without restraint without the people. Thats a system that produce unjust outcomes no matter how sincerely or generally a Police Officer has good intentions. You write this brAnd of supremacy that we are seeing can be defeated. If they want to know details, they should buy the book. Whats the one thing that we can do collectively to defeat white supremacy . I dont have an answer to that question. What i can say is when you look at history, there are many examples of people of all background coming together to make America More Perfect Union to strengthen our democracy. The fact that we have been dealing with this problem of white Mans Government for being many countries does not mean the force is behind that kind of politics, there will always be people who have a reason to fight And defeat them in the future. All right, adam, i know you will be talking about this book a lot. You will be in conversation with your good friend for bookstores in tulsa. Everybody will be able to attend that. Your three cats, did not make an appearance today. Next dont go anywhere, protests are apart of this country, conservatives continue to lash out against our rights to do that. Now according to the Associated Press, the anthem is not only played at ceremonies, Berry Toll Usa today that she felt set up. A spokesperson says the anthem was scheduled the play at that that time And was not linked to the medal ceremony. Text Senator Ted Cruz was just so o fended by berrys protest, he asked his followers, why does the left Hate America . You love a man who calls your wife ugly And says your daddy killed jfk. And who said anything about hating america . When we rightly criticize the uglier parts of your Nations History we do so as the descendants of the true architects of the nation given that our ancestors built it for free And berry was very clear about what she was protesting. The original lyrics of our national anthem makes strange references to the enslaved And the composer was known to not think of too highly of black folks, calling us a distinct And inferior race. So its not hard to imagine not wanting to pay respect to that. By the way, cancun cruz, arent you supposed to be a constitutional conservative . What could be more american than exercising your right to protest . A freedom so important to the founding fathers they literally made it the first amendment to the constitution. Were talking the hottest stories of the week, where Sprinter Shacarri Richardson who qualified for the Tokyo Olympics just a few weeks ago was slapped with a monthlong suspension after testing positive for marijuana. Richardson won our hearts when she sprinted to hug her grAndmother after a 10. 86 second 100 meter dash. She said the marijuana was a way for her to cope with the loss of her biological mother. Sitting here, i just say dont judge me because i am human. Im you, you just happen to run a little faster. Our panel joins us to talk about it. Stephanie young, former congressional Andidate-And-attorney'>CAndidate And Attorney And former public defender ross. Hes also a member of the black beat nation. Youre on set with me. Happy to have you here. I want to start with you because this poor girl. She found out that her mother passed away. Whats your thought . I think one of the real issues were not talking about is grief. In this Country Everybody is going to experience grief, in the World Everybody is going to experience grief And we all deal with it in different ways. I lost my dad in 2019. I know youve lost a parent. Were not talking about what that does And the mental Health Crisis that people go through And also i think were going to have a have a real conversation about marijuana in this country, considering we have 19 states that have legalized it, And 18 that have legalized it for medical use. Our institutions are going to have to kind of catch up with the states are And were going to have to figure out how are we threading this needle to ensure that were giving folks the support they need when they are going through mental Health Crisis like grief, And then, b, how are we going to thread the needle if youre in a state where it is legal. How are we going to update our systems to ensure that were giving people the best shots . And black people in this country for so long to be penalized for using marijuana in egregious ways And we are living through those results every single day with Mass Incarceration And all the things were trying to tackle with criminal Justice Reform, especially around marijuana use. So theres so many things here. This is very layered And i think this deserves a real conversation. I agree. I completely great. Jassi, one, i can say that i perhaps have done some research. Marijuana does not make you run faster. Two, was this Punishment Fair . What do you think . No, obviously it wasnt fair. It was arbitrary. Theres Nothing Performance enhancing or that makes you a Super Human out of marijuana. I think whats really troubling for me is the fact that it seems like black folks are being penalized more arbitrarily, it seems like theres a bit more emphasis, focus on black athletes, And my thought on this, tiffany, just really quickly is that black people, people worldwide bring 98. 7 of the flavor to all sports. Thats just a fact. And, you know, you have a Michael Phelps out there, every once in a while you have anomalies. Maybe people from africa are post olympics, maybe its Noft The Incentive to be representing a particular country, but instead to run under their own framework because theres really no value the olympics is bringing to these athletes. On the other hAnd, the african athletes are bringing so much flavor to the olympics. And i just think that there arbitrary And Capricious Penlization of black athletes is arbitrary. And the swim caps, the caps for Black Hair were not allowed on the swim team. Gwen berry, the hammer thrower, was disqualified im sorry, Gwen Berry, the hammer thrower, was criticized for protesting. So its really unfortunate. Amaru ran as a congressional cAndidate in california. Rerelaxed policies in california. Im sorry, were going to head to surfside, florida, where officials are providing an update on last weeks building collapse. Last reported, it was a category 1, they just issued the 11 00 a. M. Advisory And it was downgraded to a tropical storm. Theres about 70 mile per hour sustained winds that have been registered. The impacts from the storm, whether its a strong tropical storm or weak hurricane, will begin affecting the Florida Keys And portions of the South Florida Peninsula as early as monday, possibly spreading north through the peninsula on tuesday depending on the track. So were preparing for the risk of isolated tornadoes, storm surge, heavy And-flash'>Rainfall And Flash flooding. Now, the severity of the storm is still uncertain. The State Of Emergency applies to the following counts, charlotte, sit russ, cool yard, hillsboro, miamidade, monroe, And sarasota counties. Youre looking at a track that will pass over the western portion of cuba, end up in the Florida Straits And then start impacting florida with the eye of the storm right now looking to be on the West Side of florida. And so we obviously do what we do when it comes to the tropical storms And hurricanes. Thats just what we do. Kevin guthrie has been designated as the Coordinating Officer for the duration of the storm. Our Executive Order will assist the division And the State Emergency Response team in responding to the storm, ensuring floridians are prepared for potential impact. Now, as we mentioned yesterday, we have a building here in surfside that is tottering, it is structurally unsound. And although the eye of the storm is not likely to pass over this direction, you could feel gusts in this area. We dont know. Its definitely a possibility. And so i know the mayor And both mayors are supported demolishing the building. We brought in on the state level, the Department Of Transportation Engineers to examine the remaining structure And propose different paths forward for demolition. Im pleased to announce the state will pay for all costs associated with the demolition of the remaining structure. Yesterday we spoke with both County Mayor Cava And City Mayor burketts teams, And im supportive of it. I think its the right thing to do. Its too unsafe to let people go back in. I know there were a lot of people who were able to get out, unfortunately, who have things there. Were very sensitive. But i dont think theres any way you could let somebody go up in the building given the shape its in now. So the building is taken down, this will protect our And-rescue'>Search And Rescue teams because we dont know when it could fall over, And, of course, with these gusts potentially, that would create a really severe hazard. So our mission is to expedite it as soon as possible. Kevin guthrie reports to me that once everything is ready to go that it can be brought down within 36 hours. So it will entail minimal Work Stoppage from the And-rescue'>Search And Rescue. They would have to stop a little bit before And a little bit after just to make sure that there were no fires. But probably the most minimal interruption in terms of the course of action theyre pursuing. So floridians, just watch this. Were not likely its a beautiful day today, the best Day Weve had here for sure. Youre not likely to see any impacts today or tomorrow. But as we get into monday, if youre in very Southern Florida And then other parts of florida, as we get into tuesday, anticipate some impacts. Were hopeful that the storm just doesnt have enough runway to gain much And-strength'>Speed And Strength before it reaches our peninsula. But, again, these things are just things that we have to watch. But we do feel pretty confident that we are going to be experiencing at least a tropical storm thats going to impact a lot of communities in florida. With that, i can take a couple of questions. [ Inaudible Question ] thats a good question. What can people take . I would just say that this was a tragedy were going to turn now to more Breaking News. Let me just recap what we heard from desantis there as Hurricane Elsa takes aim for dr And haiti, it is threatening the coast And he talked about the Response Plan there. 22 people were killed in the building collapse, 126 people remain unaccounted for. Well keep our eye on news out of surfside, florida. Another Breaking News story, in massachusetts where a heavily armed group of men who claimed to be immune from State Laws were engaged in a stAndoff with police this morning, prompting shelter in place orders And shutting down a portion of the i95 as thousAnds of travelers hit the road for July 4th travel. According to Law Enforcement, all suspects are now in custody. All right, with that, were going to turn back to my panel now And get back to this olympic story. Amar, im so sorry. You were just about to address the relaxed marijuana policies in california as it relates to shacarri richardson. My heart goes out to the people of florida. On this topic, yes, it is legal in california, marijuana. Its also legal in oregon where she smoked the marijuana. And i think its high time that the olympics And the world really catches on with the 21st century. We know a lot more about marijuana than we did in the past, And frankly, its not a performance enhancer. Theyve said its a performance suppresser. You cant say its both. And its not any more dangerous than alcohol. Had she drank alcohol before her run, this would be a very different story. But lets pause for a moment And think about the fact that this black athlete, this woman broke a World Record And still is having her dreams dashed by antiquated, outdated policies that have nothing to do with And-everything'>Science And Everything to do with the kind of people who smoke marijuana versus the kind of people who do cocaine, which is a schedule 2 substance. So we need to catch on with the 21st century And with the reality that were living in And give her some grace. We have all experienced grief And we all want to experience grace at the same time. And i think this mortalizes her And humanizes her. People are watching saying, if she can get through it, we can, too. She said it perfectly in her tweet. She said, i am human. This is a moment where something like this could overturn some policies. I want to switch gears. We were disrupted by that presser. Jessie, i want to talk to you because more unmarked graves have been found near a school in british columbia. Its the latest discovery of unmarked Burial Sites that Hold Hundreds of indigenous children. U. S. Interior secretary And'>Deb HollAnd remind us this is also an echo of americas past. I have to tell you, reading about this was so devastating to me. Some studies suggest by 1926 over 80 of Native American children were essentially kidnapped And put in these reform schools. They were beaten for speaking for languages. They were sexually abused, some of them died trying to escape. How do we reconcile with this past . People ask, why do we Hate America. This is the real american history we have to talk about. Thank you. Tiffany, first And foremost, thank you for talking about this topic. Also, thank you to the secretary for bringing this up in a structural institutional way. The first And foremost is theyre going to continue to find bodies, were going to continue to find these graves. Theyre going to find thousAnds of them. I attended the haskell university, which is a lAnd grant university. Used to be a Boarding School. Theyre going to have find bodies around there. Its a topic that affects almost every Native American. There is hardly a Native American who doesnt have somebody in their family that isnt a Boarding School survivor. There were over 100,000 children that were stolen from their families. Its not revisionist history. The intent was always genocidal, always from day one. The stated policy of these Boarding Schools from a colonel Richard Henry Pratt was to kill the indian And save the child, save the man. That was the actual policy. It was intended to rid these native children of any trace And would turn them into strangers in their own communities And essentially white kids who would turn their backs on families And traditions. That was achieved through beating, shaming, scrubbing children with kerosine And many other cruel tactics. While there were thousAnds of native children who we absolutely mourn, this is sad, this reckoning thats happening, And we mourn them. They died physically under the weight of this cruelty. The practice was just as genocidal to all of those native children who didnt die physically because the intent was to kill their spirit. And so we have to reckon with that, And in the same way we have to deal with this 246 years of And-figure'>Slavery And Figure out a mathematics, a calculus that somehow accounts for this cruelty for all the lives lost. We have to do that same very, very painful calculus with those folks who are survivors of Boarding Schools. And let me just add really quickly, what you said is very important, because this isnt ancient history, in the same way that we have immediate survivors, immediate descendants of people who were the children of enslaved africans, im the child of a Boarding School survivor, im the grAndchild of a Boarding School survivor. This is real contemporary history And that calculus has to be figured out. I dont know the answer to that but its a pressing question that is very important at this moment. Yeah, And the fact that youre a child of this shows it was not that long ago. The last school just closed in the 90s. This is disgusting And the real american history that we have to confront And talk about to make the country into what so many people believe it to be. Im going to make a hard turn, speaking of whitewashing, because i want to talk about this viral Twitter Thread thats lighting up the big screen. Zola em barks on a strip club trip, but the woman who offered the tweet only got inclusion, And tiktok users are boycotting the platform. Steph, i mean, we know how this goes. A lot of people imagine Social Media without us on it. What does twitter look like without black twitter . Whats your take on all of that . Look, weve always been the Trend Setters in this country, And Culture Follows Black culture. And we know that. Thats why at our organization we rely on influencers on And-tiktok'>Instagram And Tiktok to help get messages far And wide, And we know the influence that young black people actually have on these sites. And, you know, i think everybody is just tired And now were able to organize with a way to ensure that our art, our work, is actually attached to who we are And us And we can, you know, fight these things. This boycott theyre doing on tiktok right now is actually working. Megan the stallion, her new song that usually someone would create a dance to, nobody has done that. Were talking about 37,000 videos, as opposed to 22 Million recently, from previous songs. So we know now that i dont think people are going to sit back idly And watch others take credit anymore. Theyre speaking up And banning together And i think that can only bode well for our culture to remain a part of us And for us to be the authors of it And No One can take that away from us anymore. Its complicated because there are times where theres other cultural a appropriation. I think were running out of time. But the Drake Song where he was rapping And could somebody say appropriating culture, And i will say things like, oh, its my Spirit Animal or the low man on the totem pole. Some of those things are disrespectful to other cultural appropriation. Do i have time to ask amar a question or are we way over time . Were way over. Theyre screaming at me ive got to go. What do you want to do the second that you see her . I want to hug her for a long time. [ crying ] that And-daughter'>Mother And Daughter are among the very few lucky ones reunited after trumps cruel Family Separation policy. But those happy endings are far too rare. It is estimated that during trumps term more than 5,500 families were separated. And lawyers are still searching for the parents of nearly 400 kids. Yet on wednesday, the shameless man had the gull to visit the border to advocate for a turn of his policies. Joining me, Msnbc Contributor And author of Finding Latinx And the author of separated, inside an american tragedy. Jacob, i want to start with you. I dont care about trumps Sound Bites And policies hes advocating for. I think we have to talk about the children at the center of this, the humanity of this policy And how its impacting families. There are still thousAnds of children showing up at the Border Unaccompanied every day And there are still 368 kids who have not been reunited with their parents. Where does that stAnd . Over 1,000 families have still not been reunited since the policy, And we are talking about around four years for some of them, believe it or not. So when you see former President Trump down there almost cos playing as the current President Of The United States, pining for, as you said exactly, a return to the cruelty of the previous administration, that is what the biden administration at least says they are trying to depart from with a fair, safe, orderly Humane Immigration System. I go into it in the Paperback Edition of the book. Part of the problem is that this has been institutionalized over the course of decades And the biden administration has said a lot of the right things, but it is going to take a long time And many of the things that they say they want to change still remain in place, including title 42, which was a Trump Administration Policy from the getgo under the cover of covid, expelling people out of the united states, resulting in a different form of Family Separation. So the biden administration saying the right thing, the former Trump Administration, including chad wolf, one of the architects of Family Separation was down at the border basically advocating a return to those policies, And the jury is still out about how much the biden administration can And will do. This is so heartbreaking. Youve traveled with some of the folks showing up at the southern border And really provided a unique humanitarian lens into this. There is still an influx recordbreaking numbers of people showing up at the border today. Why is this happening And what is the most humane way to address this at the southern border . I mean, i think jacob just said it. I think the biggest thing thats overshadowing the Trump Administration And the biden administration is title 42. There are still thousAnds, hundreds of Asylum Seekers that are strAnded along the border in some of the most dangerous cities because title 42 is still in place. In this moment we are not giving Asylum Seekers their legal right to seek asylum in the united states. That is our national law And also international law. You cant see this reality if you just visit the border. The moment you cross to the other side you understAnd that because of title 42, migrant fathers And mothers are making the very difficult decision of selfseparating from their children. This means they are asking their children to cross the border without them. Just imagine the trauma. The other thing thats happening is that cartels, members of the cartel, because of this policy, are directly benefiting from u. S. Policy. I mean, ive had conversations directly in front of the city where the Vice President was visiting, ive had a member tell me to my face that they are benefiting, they are kidnapping And assaulting them. Since the biden administration took office, more than 3,000 migrants have been trafficked, assaulted or kidnapped. So what is the solution to this . It starts with the Democratic Party And the White House to shamelessly be for immigration. The same way republicans are against it, they have to shamelessly be for it. You cant say you are for immigrants, but say do not come. You cant say trump has cruel policies at the border And still have title 42. You cannot say that you want to fight for immigrants And not use every tool at your disposal to pass reform. If these were white babies showing up at the border, i think the Countrys Response would be quite different. Some of the testimony of these children And when theyre going through in the camps, the Associated Press investigated this, there are some children who have to sleep on concrete floors. They were put in charge of smaller babies to hold them on their chest to keep them warm. A camp in fort bliss, el paso, there were findings the bbc found allegations of sexual abuse, covid And a lack of clean clothes. This is a nightmare happening on domestic soil. Where are these children, unaccompanied minors going once they arrive at the southern border . Im so glad you brought this up. Health And human services is the answer. When we talk about the difference between the Trump Administration And the biden administration, yes, theyre not separating deliberately And systematically for the purpose of cruelty, torturing children any longer. But what they are doing is still placing them in some of the same types of facilities that existed during the Trump Administration, during Family Separation, existed during the obama administration, in fact were stood up during the obama administration, And that is why you see scenarios at Emergency Intake Hhs sites which the administration is trying to close, similar to the stories that you heard during the Family Separation crisis. And that, again, is the big question. What is actually not what does it sound like, but is actually a fair, safe, Humane Immigration System look like . Because today were still operating with the we talk about infrastructure, we dont often talk about the infrastructure, but were literally operating with the same infrastructure that existed during the other administrations when both democrats And republicans pointed at it And said no child should be held in a situation like this. Theyre starting in this administration to try to change it, but there is an extremely long way to go. Wow. All right. Finding latinx. The republican governor so thirsty for Maga Approval she sacrificed lives in her state by presenting covid19 as a plot to ruin the white mans nation. So after declaring South Dakota open for business at the height of the pAndemic And defiantly making masks optional, the States Death Rate reached a global high. So what is this Aunt Lydia of governors up to now . Shes turning the national guard into mercenaries. This week she announced that she would deploy up to 50 of the States Guard members to texas where they will help secure the border between the united states And mexico against what exactly . Yes, desperate mothers And children And families seeking asylum. But unlike other republican governors who have done this exact same thing, she found willis johnson, a tennessee billionaire, to pay for it. So lets set aside the ethical questions of is this money laundering, because it sure sounds like it, or is this legal, it shouldnt be, or what happens when billionaires start funding the national guard to stop things like Voting Rights marches or black Lives Matter protests . The question i have for this reject is the same question by harold frazier, chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe when he asked for the States Assistance in April Of 2020 to help establish medical facilities. Why did the governor not deploy soldiers at his request, but is willing to send the guard to do the work of private donors over 1,000 Miles Away . Now we turn to Breaking News, massachusetts, where officials are giving an update on the stAndoff with the heavily armed men that ended this morning. Thank you. This serves as a reminder to all of us, as the colonel said, And i join him in his thanks, of the kind of situations that troopers may face in the middle of the night on the highway. Youve all heard about the trooper coming to the aid of these disabled vehicles, being substantially outnumbered by armed individuals. The tactics And deescalation practices that he engaged in, as well as the other state And local Police Officers that responded in getting us to a safe resolution, they deserve a great deal of credit for getting what could have been a very, very dangerous situation to a safe ending. And in respect to that, we join as well in thanks to the people who sheltered in place, who followed the directives that were being issued by the local Police Departments in helping people to get to this resolution. As youve heard, there are a number of guns. We are also working on identification of these individuals. Its my expectation that all of them will be appearing on a variety of firearms And other charges, And well know that better once we know exactly what we have here. They should be there on tuesday morning. Well be putting out more information with respect to that. But, again, this is a reminder, as we And all of our families begin the holiday, of the dangers that can arise very rapidly in places where we may least expect that, And the way in which these officers working together today, And using the best kinds of And-negotiation'>Deescalation And Negotiation skills that they have were able to bring this to a place where within a few hours we are in a safe resolution of this situation. So i want to really commend everybody that was involved in this this morning. Im going to turn it over to the chief of the wakefield police department. Thank you. Obviously very happy that came to a peaceful resolution. I would like to thanks the residents of wakefield for their And-understAnding'>Cooperation And UnderstAnding during this incident. As americans celebrate Independence Day this weekend a Andmother'>76yearold GrAndmother just lost her independence. The result of a Heartless Plizen Industrial Complex with varying stAndards of justice. One year ago Gwen Levi was serving a drug sentence. She was released to Home Confinement due to pAndemic precautions. Shes now back in jail simply because she missed a Phone Call with her Parole Officer while taking a class. President biden says criminal Justice Reform is a top priority. Gwens case illustrates just how far this country has to go to Guarantee Justice for all. We are joined by her attorney And the And-lawyer'>Founder And Lawyer at the Decarseration Collective And my old time friend, chris jenkins, behind the amazing documentary. I have to start with you because this story is so heartbreaking. Is your client okay . How is she doing . Is there anything that can undo this extraordinarily painful miscarriage of justice . Thank you for having me, tiffany. I did speak with gwen this morning. She knows that im appearing And speaking to your audience. Shes doing well, considering the circumstances, considering that shes locked in a cage for Independence Day. I think that we are not having a serious conversation about And-independence'>Justice And Independence in america as long as people like Gwen Levi are sitting in Prison Cages for trying to get an education for whats called technical violations in the system. Theres no crime that was committed here, but shes still locked up. This is heartbreaking. And shes not alone. As we mentioned, there are over 4,000 people who were released And could be sent back to jail. The biden administration, this was an Old Trump doj memo, the biden administration has kept in place, And they revisit every three months. And the next deadline to revisit is this month. So i truly hope that your client benefits from this. Chris, we have a long way to go with criminal Justice Reform here. I think people have thought, oh, the first step was passed, we why do we still have it. The Cash Bail System funnels people to jail. Your film was great. Talk to us about how the Cash Bail System is such a problem in this country. Sure, great to be with you. Take a Step Back for a second. The situation with ms. Levi is just an example, And this is something people have said for years, but our country, our system, is addicted to incarceration, whether its on the front end or Back End of the system. And like mrs. Levis case shows, shes gone back for a technical violation like her lawyer just mentioned, this is someone who just violated the terms of her probation. On the Back End of the system We Saw for years people going back into jail or into prison because they had not committed a new crime, but they had done a technical violation violating the probation, like a situation like this where she missed a Phone Call. On the front end what we have with the Cash Bail System is another addiction to incarceration, which is caging people because they simply have been arrested And have not been convicted of a crime yet. And we spend 38 Million a day caging people in jail only because they have been arrested And not convicted of a crime. Think about that. All this money, over 100 Billion a year is spent simply caging people before theyve been convicted. So what we try to do in the documentary is put a face to this issue where there are 500,000 people every day who are in jail simply because they Cant Pay. And these are not people who are generally speaking convicted or have been accused of violent crimes. Theyre simply people who are generally speaking in for crimes of poverty, drug crimes, nonviolent offenses. These are not people who the right will say are sort of violent criminals, who are out on bail And committing crimes. This is not what were talking about. Generally speaking were talking about people who are simply in jail because of lowlevel crimes, they have a 1,000 or 2,000 bond amount. They Cant Pay it, so theyre stuck in jail until they have to come to their court date. And very often during that time they lose their jobs, their housing, theyre parents And their children go into foster care. So it is essentially a human Rights Violation that were seeing every day that are violating peoples constitutional principles of being able to have affordable bail that they can come out And pay And then fight their case. Thats what our Film Deals with. More broadly its our addiction in incarceration. At every step of the criminal Justice System what reformers have tried to address, slowly but surely, but we still see situations like ms. Levi And the people we focus on in our documentary. Is there anything that is happening to get your client out of jail . Absolutely. We have filed a motion, an Emergency Motion in court for the judge to take a second look at her case. My cocounsel has done that. So were going back to court for her. What we are seeing here is that there are three dominant lies that i think many americans have been told about the Justice System that we have to deconstruct both in the courtroom And in congress, And with the president. The first is that only criminals go to prison. Thats not the case. They didnt go to prison because she committed a crime. The second is that theyre all safer with people in prison, like her. Were not safer with her sitting in prison. Shes a 76yearold cancer survivor. Her cancer is in remission. And during a pAndemic that continues to ravage federal prisons, her And-safety'>Health And Safety is threatened right now. And the third myth is that when people get out of prison were really encouraging them to rehabilitate themselves. Gwen was trying to learn computers as a 76yearold woman because she wanted to volunteer for volunteers of america. So were going back to court to present those arguments. Excellent. Well, thank you so much. The cruelty is the point when it comes to Criminal Justice. Thank you both for this important conversation. I am so thrilled to have you here. One of our producers loves your podcast. She put me on And im a big fan And happy to talk to You Guys. I want to jump right into it because a lot of folks want to know how to manage their money. And a question that people have been struggling with lately, given what happened with the recession years ago, is Home Ownership still the only path to Wealth Building . What do You Guys say . No, absolutely not. Home ownership is a major part to Wealth Building, but we have a show about the Stock Market And we talk about crypto. So theres a variety of different ways to build up wealth. Theres many different avenues to Building Wealth And it really depends on what you feel comfortable. The most important thing is education. We always talk about a one Source Income being close to none. You can actually invest money And have it come back to you. So i think something that i noticed during the pAndemic is a lot of people started paying attention to the Stock Market, And, you know, stocks were down, people bought, And, you know, tried to build up their portfolio. Some people were playing in the stocks who maybe did not have enough money to do so. How do you know when its the right time to put your money in the Stock Market . Because thats not necessarily the way for everybody. I think theres a few things that you have to cover before you start investing. First, you want to have an Emergency Savings. So we recommend three to six months of an Emergency Savings fund. Thats extremely important because you dont want to use your investments as savings. And if you have Credit Card deblt, try to pay off your Credit Card Debt before you start investing. Once you have those checked off, you can begin investing. And you dont have to invest a Lump Sum. We recommend averaging, where you put a certain amount of money in every week or month. Where youre putting 200 every month, that adds up over the course of time. You dont have to put a Lump Sum of money, you can put a small amount in a consistent basis. We always recommend to people to selfeducate yourself. You dont have to jump into the market. You can do Paper Trading where youre actually doing it with not real money, but actually fake money so you get the exact profits of what you would get if you were actually putting the money into an account.
