After a bad week of bad weather impacting Search And Rescue efforts, officials are now bracing for Hurricane Elsa to make landfall next week, potentially causing more trouble. Msnbc Correspondent Ellison Barberment so much overnight news. The concerns about the remaining tower and another condo forced to evacuate . Reporter yeah. So many different things happening here in one after the other. Oftentimes it raises more question than answers. What we do know is that 22 people have lost their lives in the collapse of this building so far. They were moms, dads, grandparents, sisters, brothers, children. At least three children are among those 22 victims. 10yearold Lucy Gara and her 4yearold sister emma, and a 7yearold child whose name that we dont know, but we know she was the daughter of a City Of Miami firefighter. Structural concerns with the part of the building that is still standing forced rescuers to stop working about 15 hours on thursday. Officials say that the rest of the building ultimately needs to come down and plans are already under way for that to happen. That process will take weeks in a bestcare stays in year. Its bestcase scenario. Its not going to happen before Hurricane Elsa. We could start to feel the effects of that as early as tomorrow night. We believe that teams here started to move some of the equipment here out yesterday evening. We were told that the equipment that they would move first, it would only be equipment that was not necessary in the active and ongoing Search And Rescue efforts. Ultimately they said the very last thing to leave would be the people, rescuers working out on the mound. Listen to some more of what we heard from miamidade officials at their briefing just yesterday. Were not just running an emergency response, as you can see, but were also preparing our whole community for a possible storm at the same time. Obviously the safety of our personnel is paramount. So we want to be working out there as long as we can. If winds increase, depending on the calculations and what the engineers advise us, well make that decision. Reporter and i spoke to a member of the miamidade urban Search And Rescue team just yesterday. And she talked about how one thing they wanted to make sure they communicated clearly to families was, again, the equipment they move initially, it is going to be stuff that is not involved in the active Search And Rescue efforts, and that people, the rescuers, many of them using hand tools, that that would be the very last thing to go. They say they will be the last thing to go, the first thing to come back as soon as it is safe to do so if this storm follows in a way where they would be forced to stop their work in this area. Lawyers from the Trump Organization and weisselberg have pleaded not guilty on their behalves. What was the mood like in the room, and any visible reaction from weisselberg . It was certainly a tense environment. They escorted Allyn Weisselberg in, he was handcuffed, surrounded by detectives. You had cyrus vance, the District Attorney in there, leticia james, the new York State Attorney General in there. I couldnt see his face at the time, i was been him. It was a tense environment. Based on your heading of the 25page document, does the prosecution have a strong case against weisselberg and the Trump Organization . Would you as a former prosecutor have authorized this case . You know, i read the indictment. At this point its based solely on what is in the papers. Again, its an early stage of the case. So its hard to kind of see the future. It seems they have evidence and supported by Documentary Evidence specifically. The indictment actually mentions that there was an internal ledger, that the Trump Organization kept the document, exactly what it was paying its employees and what wasnt disclosed to the irs. And danny, prosecutors made reference to an unindicted coconspirator twice in the charging documents. What does that mean . And any clues to who that might be . The reason they make riffs to unindicted coconspirators is ideally not to name them. We can con innerbelt Bridge Conjecture who that is, it could be trump. The reality is unless we have to believe that if they had the good on trump on thursday, they would have indicted him and would have indicted his children, as well. And they didnt. So that could mean either one of two things. That this is part of . Gigantic ongoing investigation and charges are coming, or maybe they just didnt have the goodsity, and theyre hope goods yet, and theyre hoping or pinning hopes on Allyn Weisselberg, a risky proposition especially if o is weisselberg is not likely to flip. He appears to be staying loyal to Donald Trump and is not cooperating with investigators. So do you think anything will change after these indictments . The governments favorite move is to indict small fish to get to big fish. But that comes with a lot of risks. Number one, that small fish may not flip at all. But even if that small fish flips, then they may not be reliable. After all, they are somebody that has been convicted of a crime, who is testifying against their boss. But the government takes the view it takes a criminal to catch a criminal. So its this is a favorite move of state and federal prosecutors to try and flip someone, but if it doesnt work theyre stuck with just prosecuting the small fish. So like i said earlier, this has been a twoyear investigation using resources from both the New York Attorney Generals office and the manhattan das office. Its got to be more comprehensive than any investigation recently in the state. If they have the goods, we can expect that would be coming soon. Every day a new statute of limitations expires. For many days weve been working this 24 hours a day nonstop. Weve had every personnel that we can to be on top of this debris to try to rescue people. Weve done everything within our means and our ability, and were very blessed that the federal partners and State And Everybody thats come and supported. As to the preparation of the hurricane, this is something we do every year, constantly. These type of hurricanes that could possibly hit us. These things are part of our lives. Its unfortunate, but something we work with every year. And were doing everything possible to prepare everybody in case we do Get Hit by this particular Hurricane Elsa. And could you walk us through this decision to demolish the remainder of the condo . The mayor said the demolition will likely take weeks. So how is it going to help Recovery Efforts . Well, this is a process that takes a while. Its not that its going to happen tomorrow. Its something thats going to take several weeks. It is a an analytical process to make sure that everything is done correctly. The building is deemed unsafe. And Thats Something that we cannot allow to stay directed in our community. Therefore, it has to come down as the mayor stated. Unfortunately, this is at the same time were still trying to rescue. By the period probably that this decision aol the building actually will come down, it will be still several weeks, like i said. And at that point, it will probably be in the recovery state, not in the rescue position. The Crestview Towers in North Miami Beach was also ordered to evacuate after it was deemed structurally and electrically unsafe. Is the city taking steps to make sure that buildings are up to code and that any other buildings in the area are possibly a concern . These these buildings are in a jurisdiction of different cities. And in this particular case, North Miami Beach has requested people to evacuate due to ill say an unsafe structure that they determined after their inspection. This is going on around on every city, every city is doing their inspections or reviews of their 40year inspections. As we are in the county, County Mayor ordered an audit of our buildings also that are recently just been done with the 40year inspection. And thats in the unincorporated area. This is something that is being done across our county by the different and my colleagues and i are going to be jumping into as far as legislation is concerned. And in the next coming weeks and months. This is something that we have to analyze carefully and make sure that our Building Code even though its the toughest probably in the nation, were going to have take into accountability many different things as we look at it. The investigation on the building is one thing thats been conducted by many, many engineers and specialists and these type of analysts that are going to be taking place on this building to look at the investigation and also legally. The State Attorney is conducting sorry, convening a grand jury, and our department of homicide, the police departments homicide unit, is all over it. But marijuana is not in any way, shape, or form, performance enhancing. I was a Shot Put and discus thrower. If i was high in the ring, there is no way that would have positively affected my performance. I would have probably thrown worse. And i imagine sprinters, they would not reaction well on the gun if they were high, as well. So i do not think, you know, smoking marijuana is a Performanceenhancing Drug. First, we had some threats from mccarthy which he has since tentatively walked back. And now republicans seem to not want to touch this committee at all. Whats happening . Reporter good morning. Now that we have the political Reality Kind of playing out, theres no there are not many republicans here that the to go anywhere near the January 6th select committee. And this is all coming to be right as you said with the pelosi appointments of these eight members with one republican, the lone republican now, congresswoman Liz Cheney. But the reality here is that House Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy has some political decisions and calculation thats hes trying to balance. Hes portraying this as a partisan political exercise, and thats been his indication for the last several months leading up to the select committee. Now he has a choice of what kind of potential members he could appoint. He could appoint up to five republicans to the committee. Its worth noting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi does have final say over who will actually sit on the select committee. But its Mccarthys Choice of whether he will put forward notable members, those who could get serve the economy or those that are the most partisan, that he could spin this into a political circus. As you noted, he had made veiled threats over whether if pelosi was going to appoint republicans to this committee, that he would strip them of their Committee Assignments. He later claimed that he didnt do that, and that he was still shocked by by congresswoman Liz Cheneys decision to accept that appointment from pelosi instead of accepting a Committee Assignment from their own republican leadership. As this plays out were getting new details from democrats into how theyre trying to move forward. Wheelers Benny Thompson had to say. Well, i think that Liz Cheney at some point right prior to January 6th really came to the conclusion that she was going to do the right thing, damn the consequences. It is admirable. For those of us who remember the bush administration, the fact that me and so many democrats are praising Liz Cheney whose neoconservative record on Foreign Affairs is quite well known as is her fathers, is quite an irony and hard to believe given where we were a couple decades ago. But Liz Cheney is doing the right thing. Shes already paid a price, losing her leadership spot. At this point i think she feels like she doesnt politically have anything more to lose that she hasnt already lost. Do you think anybody else will join her on the committee . Any republicans . Well, i would love to see Adam Kinzinger who is a good friend of mine. We served on the foreign Affairs Committee together, and we colead a caucus to promote democracy in syria. At the same time, Adam Kinzinger is also like Liz Cheney, quite outspoken in terms of calling the Big Lie exactly that. So its hard to hard to believe that Kevin Mccarthy would appoint someone likekinzing her whos been telling the like Kin Zinger whos been telling about this. My wary is that he will appoint the people that will make it a complete joke. And think about truly what a disgrace it is that Kevin Mccarthy is actively attempting to cover up any investigation into what was the first attack on the united States Capitol since the war of 1812. Yeah. What would happen, do you think, if if he does appoint Marjorie Taylorgreene or perhaps Matt Gaetz to that committee . It would be the ultimate sign that he just wants to make it a complete farce, a complete joke. Frankly, those would be individuals i would not want to see serve on the committee. It would show that its not serious. And i would support any measure possible to ensure that they wouldnt serve on it. One way or the other, regardless of what the mechanism is, we need to get to the truth of what happened on January 6th.
