Question is are investigaors any closer to finding out why the building came down. And research on the effectiveness of the two most prominent vaccine, what does it mean for booster shots. And another win for College Athletes after an Ncaa Panel says they should be able to profit off of their success. The question this morning, is this a Game Changer . Its way too early for this. Good morning, And welcome to way too early the show thats been a fan of College Athletes. Go blue. Im kasie hunt. On this tuesday, june 29th. We start with the news. We are entering day 6 in the search survivors in the Surfside Condo Collapse in florida. The process of sifting And digging through the massive pile of rubble is slow And Pain Staking. Rescuers continue to work around the clock in 12hour shifts in hopes of finding even one person still alive. Families And Loved Ones anxiously wait for any news. We have people waiting And waiting And waiting for news. That is excruciating. We have them coping with the news that they might not have their Loved Ones come out alive And still hope against hope that they will. Theyre learning that some of their Loved Ones will come out as body parts. I mean, this is the kind of information that is just excruciating for everyone. Search And rescue crews stress they cant simply use cranes to pick up rubble to look for survivors because everything is intertwined And every action has a reaction. Cameras are used to go deep in the debris, in some cases where sounds have been heard. Unfortunately no one has been pulled out alive after the initial hours since the building went down. A letter was sent to residents warning their building was in need of repairs. The letter urged residents to pay the 15 Million in assessments to fix problems. The president wrote, the concrete damage to the building would multiply over the years And the observable damage, such as in the Parking Garage has gotten worse over the years. According to the journal, the letter was meant to explain why Construction Projects were worthy on the 40yearold building. Ahead of the meeting for the assessment of 15 Million to be paid by residents. Three lawsuits have been filed so far all by Condo Owners against the condo association. The first lawsuit was filed less than 24 hours after the partial collapse of the 12story building. It is a Class Action Suit seeking 5 p million dollar in damages. Another Condo Owner who had to be rescued from his balcony has also sued. All three lawsuits say the association new there were issues And failed to keep homeowners safe. Joining us is antonia hylton. Thank you for being with us. I know its been a very long week so far, even though we are here only on tuesday. Can you talk about the emotion that you have been seeing from Family Members on the ground And set the stage for us as we head into this next day. Reporter good morning, kasie. You know, to be frank with you, the situation here is quite grim. We have 11 people confirmed dead. One more body recovered since yesterday evening. And 150 people still unaccounted for. So when you talk to Community Members here or you talk to volunteers who have actually been on site, been by the rubble. They are starting to privately confide that they are losing hope that miracles are going to happen. I met a woman who lives about a block away from where i am now, close to where the tower came down, And one of her friends is one of the unaccounted for. She told me she isnt holding onwith to hope that anymore that her friend is still alive And could have survived in the rubble the last six days now. Theres the public narrative of possible And-reunification'>Rescue And Reunification And people holding on And saying theres hope And the private realization that many are coming to because theyre eager to start getting on with the Grieving Process And finding closure. At times families have been angry And frustrated And in private meetings with officials theyve yelled at them, asking for accountability, how this could have happened, understAnding why the recovery is moving at the pace its moving. But this Republican Site is so dangerous that these rescuers had to work at a meticulous And slow pace And doesnt go hAnd in hAnd with families that want And deserve answers now. But thats what officials are facing, the emotional needs of the families that are at odds with the reality of the dangerous rubble they are shifting through right now. Many of those first responders now taking quite a few risks to try to find those Family Members. Thank you very much we really appreciate it. Lets go to the Andemic'>Covid PAndemic now. Almost 180 Million americans are now at least partially vaccinated against coronavirus but as more And more restrictions are being lifted across the country other parts of the world are seeing troubling setbacks. Katie beck has more. Reporter while record numbers of americans prepare to celebrate the fourth And return to postpAndemic freedoms, a growing number of countries are seeing them disappear. Hopefully we can concur this. Reporter the Delta Variant sending sydney, australia in a lockdown, the uk extending longdown, also tightening restrictions in And'>New ZealAnd And israel. Delta is the most transmissible of the variants identified so far And is spreading rapidly among unvaccinated populations. Reporter but doctors say those fully vaccinated can put worry to rest. You really are in the clear in terms of risk. Reporter some states like New Jersey feel a risk low enough to go against cdc guidelines, removing Andates'>Mask MAndates from schools in the fall. But still officials say the new cases attributed to delta is doubling every two weeks. With a vaccine that does quite well against this problematic variant. So lets use them And crush the outbreak. Reporter a race against the variant to get more americans vaccinated And keep freedoms intact. Katie beck, nbc news. Lets use them. Thanks to Katie Beck for that report. New studies find that vaccines from And-moderna'>Pfizer And Moderna may protect for years, great news. According to a report yesterday, scientists found the Vaccine Set off a persistent immune response giving protection against the existing variants. The results add to the growing evidence that the people immunized with the mrna may not need boosters. Scientists expect the immune response with Johnson Johnson to be less durable than that produced by mrna. President trump is hitting the road to promote the bipartisan infrastructure deal. Yesterday was just as crazy as it gets in the northwest. Lets add this up now. This was the peak of the Heat Wave yesterday. This is the list of our major cities And the hottest temperatures they ever recorded. Phoenix top on the list, And then Las Vegas. And now look who is number three, portlAnd, oregon at 116 degrees yesterday. Almost was as hot as vegas has ever been. Thats insane. Sacramento 115, st. Louis 115. Our friends in seattle, seattle moved up to 16th on the list when they hit 108 degrees yesterday. Now new York City is 106. Seattle passed baltimore, seattle passed washington d. C. , which is also 106. So seattle And portlAnd are now almost considered one of the hottest cities in the country. And it continues today, but seattle And portlAnd will be a little Bit Cooler but we still have 12 Million people in the west, 44 Million people in the And-philadelphia'>Northeast And Philadelphia is under an excessive heat warning today, by the way. In the northwest we will break the record high today in seattle, itll be 90s. But not the crazy 108 like yesterday. And portlAnd will also be in the 90s Today And cooler. Some of that nuts heat is now towards spokane, 110 today. So its still exceptionally hot but not like it was. A lot of the heat continues wednesday more towards the interior. How about the northeast, yesterday was just a hot, sweaty day, going to be just like that again today. 99 Itll Feel like in d. C. , 101 in new york, near 100 in boston, it wont Cool Off till tomorrow. Well be very hot And then thunderstorms are going to roll through the northeast. We could see some strong thunderstorms. Throughout the fourth, this is not what people wanted to see. We go from sweltering heat got to be by the lake to chilly almost in some spots. 70s And 60s in northern new englAnd. Lawyers for the Trump Organization made a last Ditch Effort to fend off criminal charges for not paying taxes on gifts to employees. Senator Mitch Mcconnell is pressuring leaders to abAndon a plan to link the bipartisan Infrastructure Framework with a pending reconciliation backed by democrats. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she wont consider the bipartisan Infrastructure Plan until the senate approves a second larger package. But mcconnell put out a Statement Yesterday insisting those two pieces of legislation be separated. He said, quote, unless Leader Schumer And speaker pelosi walk back their threats then President Bidens walk back of his Veto Threat would be a hollow gesture. He argued the president cannot let congressional democrats hold a separate Bill Hostage over a separate And bipartisan process. I appreciate the president saying that hes willing to deal with infrastructure separately. But he doesnt control the congress. And the speaker And the Majority Leader of the senate will determine the order. And so, what i did this morning is to call on the president to ask the Majority Leader And the speaker to deal with these issues separately. Okay. Meanwhile, President Biden is hitting the Road Today to promote the bipartisan Infrastructure Package. He will be in wisconsin to tout the economic benefits of the plan, stressing the 973 Billion package would include the largest investment in transportation in a century And create millions of jobs. Coming up on Morning Joe, Pete Buttigieg joins mika And joe And willie to weigh in on the plan. Joining us is jake sherman, its great to see you. Good morning. Mcconnell we knew he was going to get involved in this at some point, trying to take advantage clearly of the president s missteps last week where he seemed to imply he would veto the bipartisan Compromise Right after he came out in support of it, had to walk it back over the weekend. There is something there, just because of these republicans who said they would support the bipartisan plan, a number of them are people who tend to listen to mcconnell And if mcconnell puts his finger on the scale against this bill it could potentially create some problems. What do you see here . I see a few things. I think this is in our wheelhouse, kasie. This is the Minority Leader of the senate reminding everybody that Joe Biden doesnt control congress. Nancy And-chuck'>Pelosi And Chuck schumer control congress. So they will control the paper as mcconnell likes to say, they will control the pace And the cadence with which congress considers this legislation, this big package, this twotrack package. And thats important to remember. So it is nice that Joe Biden is saying he would sign an Infrastructure Bill if it got to his desk on its own. But guess what an Infrastructure Bill wont get to his desk on its own without Nancy Pelosi And Chuck Schumer agreeing. And Nancy Pelosi hasnt backed off of that. Well see her today on Capitol Hill And later this week on Capitol Hill. Well have the chance to ask her, but i have to imagine that shes not going to line up exactly with where Joe Biden is because theres no reason for her to. And, of course, the issue that were talking around here is while And-pelosi'>Schumer And Pelosi control congress, it is by the narrowest of margins And Mitch Mcconnell knows that. This is, of course, the pressure And an attempt basically to drive a wedge in there between progressives And moderate democrats. At The End of the day, even this bigger partisan plan, its only going to be able to be what Joe Manchin is going to accept. And this is another instance where progressives may have some challenges in terms of executing their leverage. Every single we write this this morning in punch bowl news, every lawmaker in the And-senate'>House And Senate said its Joe Manchin right now. We spoke to Andria-ocasiocortez'>AlexAndria Ocasiocortez yesterday And you have to remember when you speak to not you but we all have to remember when you speak to any individual lawmakers with a four Seat Majority in the house And a tied senate, every lawmaker has basic Veto Power over anything. So this is just like a high Wire Act doing back flips on a high wire for pelosi, schumer And Joe Biden. So everyone has a lot of power right now And a lot of leverage. Jake, what do you think are some of the things that could trip up this bigger package as well . For folks who arent as down in the weeds on this stuff that you And i are, the process that youre trying to use here, its what Mitch Mcconnell used to pass the Tax Cuts when republicans controlled congress. But its tricky, requires a lot of maneuvering, we know mcconnell is the master at executing on those things, pushing those things through the senate And getting it done no matter what. Are democrats worried at how republicans may try to use the process to gum things up or potentially derail the entire thing . They will try to gum things up And derail the entire thing. But i would say everybody i speak to is worried not worried but looking for different things. It could be too small or not go far enough for progressives, too big or go too far for moderates. Its theres so many Trip Wires in this larger package. Aoc told me yesterday she would only allow the bipartisan bill to pass And only vote for it if theres a budget of her liking moving at the same time that includes the Climate Change provisions that shes seeking. So its just like everybody has something here. And i increasingly think, kasie, this is going to go to The End of the year. This is going to be were in july almost, so theres five months between now And The End of the year. I have to imagine that this is going to take that entire period of time. You know, i think i said this at some point on the Air Yesterday but weve been talking about the august recess, it seems like i take your point. I feel like we should be talking about the Holiday Recess as in christmas, new years, Et Cetera for this possibly. Jake sherman, thank you for being with us my friend. We appreciate it. Still fresh unstopables inwash Scent Booster Downy unstopables the instant Air Purifier removes 99. 9 of the virus that causes covid19 from treated air. So you can breathe easier, knowing that you And your family have added protection. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is preparing to select members of congress, including apparently a republican, to investigate the january 6th, capitol insurrection. She introduced Legislation Yesterday that would create a select committee And she would have the power to select 8 members of the panels, five by House Leader kevin mccarthy. The democrats could seek to compel the testimony of aides And lawmakers. Nancy pelosi is considering appointing a republican with one of her picks. Liz cheney And Adam Sin singer is apparently in the running. Joining us now a member of the house ways And means committee, congressman Dan Kildee of michigan. Thank you for being here. I know. In person. Its a renewed experience. Im getting used to it, but thrilled to see you. This commission, we raised our eyebrows when we saw the speaker was thinking of adding a republican to this. First of all, do you know who shes thinking about . I dont. It would be helpful for us to have a bipartisan answer to these questions that hang out there. Its disappointing that republicans didnt want to participate in a 9 11 commission. But we have to get to the facts. We have to establish a clear, historic record of what took place And how it happened. And that will mean a bipartisan answer. And so, the hope is that the republicans that Leader Mccarthy presumably will appoint And anybody the speaker appoints will be focused on the facts. What is the challenge if we as a nation, And i understAnd your point, it was the worst attack on the capitol since the war of 1812. We dont have a shared set of facts about what happened that day. How can you convince americans that a select committee that the speaker has so much control over is, in fact, an honest, nonpartisan assessment of what went on. Itll be up to the committee And the members that the speaker appoints. Thats why i think it is so critical that the members include thoughtful or at least a thoughtful republican who is willing to look at the facts. That will help endorse the notion that the work of the committee is a reflection of what took place. It is true that we have members in congress that are trying to rewrite this moment. I dont think thats going to work. But its also important that we take the step ourselves, normally, not just with the good reporting thats taking place, but congress itself. Formally doing this inquirying, establishing the facts, creating a record so decades from now itll be clear what took place And maybe some unanswered questions that we need to get to about the genesis of the attack And thats going to be one of the subjects that the select committee will address. One of the thorniest as well. How are you doing in the wake of the insurrection . Better. A lot better. It was tough. I was one of the members trapped in the gallery And had some difficulty right after the events of january 6th. Ive been getting help And thats made all the difference in the world. I encourage anyone with any trauma to get the help they need, it does make a difference. Lets talk about whats facing us in the future legislatively, the Infrastructure Package. I know we have focused on the senate. But theres a reason the speaker is saying im not putting the bipartisan package on the floor without something bigger because the number of votes she has in the house is so narrow, trying to get this, especially the big Reconciliation Package in the house is going to be a real feat. Are you confident that democrats in the house can get both of these packages in the Finish Line . I think we can in the house. The question is what can we get done in the senate that comes to the house that we can vote on. If we are able to get a big Step Forward on infrastructure And make the necessary investments to make our families more competitive, allow people the Breathing Room they need to fully participate in the economy, child care, guaranteed post secondary education, Tax Credits for families that are struggling. If we can put that together, i think we can get to 218 in the house. As i was listening to the comments earlier, theres a lot of focus on Senator Manchin, every One Of Us can be Senator Manchin if we want to be. You put your hat in that ring . No, im not. But anybody could exercise that sort of leverage And that makes it really tough. I think we need to do the biggest Step Forward that we can do that gets us 218 votes in the house And 50 votes plus the Vice President in the senate And Joe Bidens signature, the biggest plan that gets us to that. What is biggest . 2 Trillion . 1. 5 trillion . In some ways the size of the bill, the packpackage, does mak difference. But its what the elements are. Is it a set of Building Blocks we can build from . Do we address climate . Do we address the fact that cities in this country clean Drinking Water is not guaranteed. Even if its only a big downpayment that allows us to come back later And reinvest, its as much about whats in it as the size of the investment totally in terms of the number. The number is not as important as the elements. Finally, politically, you guys are facing a challenging year keeping the house of representatives, is this Infrastructure Package must do if you hope to hold onto the house . I think its critical. We dont get credit And we shouldnt get credit for the things were for. We have to deliver. For me, this is why im willing to take some compromise if it means its a big Step Forward, so i can go back home to the people i work for And tell them, look, which is what we did, this is what it means to your life, to your family And this is an indication of what well continue to do if you reward us with majorities in the house And the senate. Congressman, Dan Kildee thank you for getting up early. Appreciate it. Hope to see you back. For sure. Neither democrats or republicans guilty to everything they wanted in this agreement. But thats what it means to compromise And reach consensus. There is plenty of work ahead to finish the job And there will be disagreements to resolve And more compromise to be forged but this is a deal the american people can be proud of. Joining us now, director of policy studies, lanhee chen. Great to be in studio. I know. Im not over the novelty of this. Yeah. Its great to have you. Thank you for being us so early as well. Lets talk about the infrastructure deal. I know you have been a close adviser for many years to Senator Mitt Romney who is a key part of this. What did you think of how President Biden hAndled the rollout of this And are you confident that the group can stay united going forward considering what happens . The rollout wasnt good. To have the package negotiated And then basically step on your own message And then have to walk that back. There already is a tremendous amount of distrust between the two sides, the political spectrum clearly creates huge divisions. To have a situation where youre not from day one, minute one, reassuring people that this deal we negotiated is one we intend to follow through on. The republicans part of the group, mitt romney, rob portman, Et Cetera, i think they are committed to getting it across the Finish Line but it has to take work from both sides And were on our way to doing that. It would be good news for the american people if this package would get passed as its been negotiated. You mention trust, Thats Something i feel over the last ten years in washington we just watched be trampled upon over And over again. Yeah. Do you think, setting aside the fumbles, has there been trust built between the president , Joe Biden, who is obviously a person of the senate And some of these republicans . Its something that biden was counting on And talked about in the campaign, but you Yo Eve been behind the scenes And have an understAnding. Whats your take . My sense is there is a belief that he is sincere about wanting to get these priorities across the Finish Line. I think there is some trust being built but thats going to take time. Some of the relationships are old, some are newer. So i think the president is going to have to continue to work to ensure that republicans feel if they come along theyre not going to get burned. In politics thats so hard because there is a sense its transactional. And i hope what biden is trying to built is a longerterm legacy around working together. Its hard to do. Yes. You were on mitt romneys 2012 campaign we worked together then. So much has changed in the intervening time. We are now in a position where the republican party is looking toward what happens next in 2024, as much as i dont necessarily want to jump ahead, im curious as to your thoughts in terms of who you think is stAnding out right now And thinking in sophisticated ways, we spent time on Morning Joe a couple days ago talking about ron desantis. Do you think Theres Anyone that can come to the table And stAnd up to a Donald Trump Run . Desantis is interesting because in covid he had things hes done that caused controversy And also created contrast with others. Contrast in a primary is important i do. This idea if you look like everybody else youre not going to stAnd out. I think desantis has stood out among voters. I think some people on The Hill have also tried to navigate their way through as well. Well have to see what happens, its still early. It is. But you know the invisible primary starts its already started. Great to see you. Well see you again on Morning Joe. Thank you for getting up with us too early this morning. Dont go anywhere, Morning Joe starts right now. Good morning, And welcome to Morning Joe, it is tuesday, june 29th, were going to get right to the news. Were looking at all angles of the surfside collapse. Were entering day six of the search for survivors in that Condo Collapse in southern florida. 11 people are now confirmed to have died while 150 people remain unaccounted for. The process of sifting And digging through the massive piles of rubble is slow And Pain Staking but rescuers continue tirelessly to work around the clock in 12hour shifts in hopes of finding even one person alive. I think every moment is critical. This is why, you know, were woin
