Shauna tiaffay hit the jackpot in Las Vegas. A handsome husband, adorable daughter and a good job. But there is a dark side to sin city. And sadly, the beautiful Cocktail Waitress became its victim. And in cases like this one, the husband is often a suspect, but the Crime Scene was telling Investigators Something else. And they got a hot tip. But like so many things in vegas, nothing was as it seems. Here is Keith Morrison with under a Full Moon. He was finished now. Tired, run out. She must have been, she walked away from the incessantly tripping machinery, and the weary eyes of the gamblers on holiday from real life, who called out for her again, and again and again. At precisely 3 00 in the morning, the backroom of the palms casino, a Cocktail Waitress named Shauna Tiaffay inserted her Time Kurd and set out to break a rule. You think he would just be a jerk, right . Just kind of a jock, mean spirited sort of, stereotypical but he was quite the contrary, said maria. He was always the calming force amongst family and friends. He was the gentle speaker. He had this outlook in life where, i want to go out and make the world a better place. So george did. He earned a prestigious appointment to West Point. After graduation, he became a combat engineer, served as a Nation Builder in panama. His childhood friend, erin solano, went down for a visit. He told me about the mission she accomplished, building schools, clinics, roadways and bridges, really had an impact on his life, he felt like i am beginning to do something. He left the military with the rank of captain. He took a corporate Engineering Job but soon realize that life in an Office Building was not for him. He wanted to to work for real people, which is why george put aside that fancy degree of his and went to vegas, to train as a Firefighter Emt focusing on himself was not how he wanted to live his life. He wanted to serve. That was a favorite word of his, to serve. Shauna tiaffay lived in a good, safe neighborhood. A part of town where vegas does not party. A part of town where the people who work the casinos raised their families, and lived ordinary, quiet lives but this is where they found her. George, and the eight year old daughter, inside her own house, not so safe after all. I think i need to report a a break in and a murder. George would not have known, even if he had been an empty. What is going on . There she had been dead for hours. My wife my wife is, on the floor bloody, stiff, not moving. We got a call in the morning. Detective Dan Long has been in homicide a long time and vegas has kept him busy him and his partner, terry miller. When we arrived, they were Fire Department personnel everywhere. It was all too obvious, shauna had been attacked, probably as she had walked into her house, beaten with something blunt and a hard. There were things done with the body, that made us think there was possible Sexual Assault of some type, and there was posing of the body. Some kind of predator at work here . A predator who escaped with a good chunk of cash, from the looks of it. Shaunas purse was missing. Cash and casino chips. They get tipped with chips quite often. 500 in a night. They make a lot of money, especially if they are good. And we send detectives over to the palms, talked to them and they said she was one of the best employees they had. But something happened after she left, so what . She was very beautiful. Is it someone Who Saw her at work, followed her home . Here we are of course, as [inaudible] considered a possible suspect as well. So detectives pulled him aside, interviewed him right on the spot. George, do you understand the statements being recorded . I understand. Okay, and you understand we want to talk to you about what happened this morning . Yes sir. He told detectives when he saw the Garage Door open, he had their daughter hang back while he went inside. I saw her feet just laying there, frozen looking. And in my job, i know what that means are you a paramedic . I am an emt firefighter. Their daughter did not see anything, said george. He rushed her out to the street. I did not know if there was somebody there, i just wanted to get out of there with my daughter he took the little girls to Charlottes Place because he said, it was her turn. Because we are currently separated, and we were planning on moving back in together, because we started to get along again. Meanwhile, they have this complicated arrangement. Shauna were 7 pm to 3 am at the casino, george, as a firefighter worked long shifts, and got lots of days off. Their daughter shuttled back and forth between them. And when they were both at work, she spent nights with georgias mother. Okay, what shift did you work yesterday . A 24hour shift. So he was at work when sean was killed, they did some checking, just to be sure. You know, if he was [inaudible] [inaudible] [inaudible] back, then she immediately expected some neighborhood teenagers. She discussed it with several people, including george and decided that it might be that she left something unlocked, and it could maybe have been some kids who live in the neighborhood. So, is that who killed her . Looking around the Crime Scene, the detectives realize that shaunas killer, or killers had been into her booze, and taken not just her purse, but like in that earlier burglary, her underwear. They sent about checking every one of the neighborhood boys, and they had solid alibis, all of them. They were not involved in the break in. They were not involved in her death. Now, things get even more scary. Because we do not know what we have. Once that got out, it could very quickly spread the terror around. Like it already had, amongst shaunas coworkers. We did not know if there was some psycho, you know, watching us girls work at the palms. We did not know if any of us were next. The predator already got a boost that second day, when on a Walking Path near shaunas house, someone found bits from her purse. I. D. , makeup kit, personal things. What crosses your mind when you realize that it is someone, walking away from the scene, discarding things . A stalker. If sexual predator. They spread out, got the rest of homicide involved. Days off, canceled. Everybody out, they looked everywhere. There was considerable pressure, pressure from the media, pressure from our administration. Everybody wants this thing solve, put away quickly. And then quite suddenly, a break. A tipster on the Crime Stoppers line, with a story to tell. He had some information that he thought was connected to our murder. A wild Goose Chase . Maybe. And maybe not coming up, the tipster mentioned a detail about the crime, one that gets everyones attention. No one knew that but the two of us. When dateline continues. Big Sister Paula somehow felt a frozen in terrible dream that refused to end or make sense. Ever since her mother called with the news about shauna. I dont know if you could describe it, you know . Your heart just drops to your stomach. Paula and sean his family and friends gathered to mourn, and remember how much they cared about her. The funeral itself was standing room only. It was a beautiful tribute to shauna. Georgias big sister, maria i could see that george was heartfelt. I could see that he did what he could to express himself at a terrible time. It was all about showing that shauna was loved, cared for. Meanwhile, Las Vegas Homicide Detectives worked diligently to identify and track down whoever killed her. Did we have a predator . She came, rome and they were burglarizing The House . Is there an enemy somewhere that she made, who we need to find . But then, they got lucky. A man who called himself Big Will pennix called the Crime Stoppers hotline. He had a story to tell. He spent time in prison. And he worked as a maintenance man. But he found satisfaction in helping others coming out of prison, helping them find the right path. One such man said Big Will, was a Homeless Handyman who lived out in the desert, and went by the name, greyhound. He did a lot of drugs, drank a lot of alcohol, and was volatile. According to Big Will, this greyhound told a lot of tall tales. But will called police this time because greyhound bragged about killing someone, a woman. He said he used a hammer to do it. We had just come from autopsy that morning, marks that were seen on shaunas body, we possibly thought it was a hammer. No one knew that but the two of us. And this guy brings it up . Exactly. A homeless, drug addicted and volatile tempered person, says Big Will certainly seem to fit the profile of a potential predator that detectives were looking for. He told us that greyhound walks everywhere. He lives out in the desert. But Big Will wanted help, he said, he agreed to take him to some of the places where he thought greyhound liked to hang out. And, what do you know . They ran into at the Parking Lot of a Gas Station. Detective long approached him. Sweet as pie, greyhound was, he said hed be perfectly willing to go to the station, and have a chat. His real name was Noel Stevens. What did he tell . You he said he knew shauna, knew where he lived, said he did handiwork for George And Everyone else in the neighborhood. So, someone that shauna knew, someone george the dogooder tried to help, not out of character for george, but greyhound, or noel, was adamant he had nothing to do with chinas murder. He then agreed to show the Detectives Campsite out in the desert. What did you find . Swimsuit bottoms, that in our search of shaunas house, appeared to match the top that i had seen in her bedroom so greyhound was the Burglar Poking around shaunas personal things. In fact, her friend had remembered that shauna have grown uncomfortable with this particular Charity Case who is doing work around The House. She did not want anyone in The House anymore, and she said, you need to get out of this house or i am calling the police on you. So, was he the killer . Out at the campsite, detectives did not find any evidence linking him to the murder. So they kept looking. One of the other things that Big Will told us, was that noel had a Campsite Number one, and a Campsite Number two. A second campsite, out there, somewhere. But where . And what if anything, was hidden there . Coming up, in the bush, he saw a pair of jeans. They appeared to have blood on them. When dateline continues. N dateline continues ut the moms. Believe it or not, that whole area has homeless people that are up there. This is where greyhound took them. This is where he lived, they said. But out there, somewhere, they were convinced there must be a second campsite, with possible evidence about the killing of Shauna Tiaffay. So Detective Miller went up with the Police Air you need to have a look around. Those two pilots decided they were going to fly that whole area, of course, and they actually located the second campsite. We entered and found a citation, in the name of Noel Stevens. We were at the right place. It appeared to me that this matched the top that i had seen in her bedroom. [inaudible] [inaudible] that is kind of your story there, right . Proof that the homeless Handyman George and shauna tried to help was a murderer. But could the story that simple, really . Listen to shaunas sister, paula, for example. Things start to sound a bit more complex. Well, i just think he always loved himself more than he loved anyone else. It was all about him and what he wanted. That was george, she was talking about. The selfless firefighter had another side, it said paula. The verbal abuse, the intimidation, the control. George was always a controlling guy. Hold the camera in your hand, push it away from us. According to paula, george had become ever more controlling, judgmental. Especially about shauna and her spending habits. First time at the beach only got worse one shot told george that the marriage was over. He said, you know, if you dont come back to, me and we cant sort this out, you are going to lose custody of your daughter. And that was her Number One to fear. Absolutely. He used their daughter as a way to manipulate shauna, time and time again. Shauna had been letting her Work Mates read the Text Messages george sent as things get worse in the marriage. One text would be nice, short and sweet. [inaudible] we need to work things out. And then, you know, we would be working, she would not be able to text him back right away. And ten minutes later, he is blowing up her phone, costing her out, calling her names. Shaunas supporters remembered her funeral quite differently than georges people did. He had no emotion. No emotion at all. He did a eulogy, talking about how much money shown liked to spend, but there was one time she was at the Gas Station and accidentally left the pump in the car. During the eulogy . During the eulogy. Paul outwatched george and his daughter at the cemetery, and fumed. They had not even lowered her in the ground yet and he said, come on, took her hand and said, it is time to go. I watched him walk off with my little niece, eight years old, just lost her mom. And i watched him walk off with her and i thought, you know, this is exactly what he wanted. He wanted all of the control over my niece. Paula told the police her suspicions, even before they began chasing down leads on greyhound. Even though they had their killer, and they idea that george was involved somehow is already in the back of their minds. On the other hand, Georgias Family was just as eager to ensure the police that those attacks on Georgias Character from Chinas Side or complete nonsense. I never saw Shauna Act cowed, or afraid of my brother she had an equal footing in the way that they interacted with one another. So, that is why i still cant believe the insinuation, the allegations that he was abusive, or even controlling. Georgias friend Aaron Solano could not agree more. No matter where he finds himself, what challenging situation he finds him self in, he has always been consistently kind, consistently carrying. So which george was the real one . The detectives decided to pay him a visit at his house, but they did not tell him what they heard about him, the good or the bad. Mr. Can i call you . George yes, call me george. George said sure, he knew greyhound but said he never heard him called Noel Stevens before. You knew him as Something Else . I knew him as neil smith. He told detectives how him and shauna had befriended this neil smith, tried to help him get back on his feet. Me and the wife, you know, we kind a look at these little Charity Cases. Because he was a nice guy, and you know, down on his luck. By now, the detectives knew that greyhound was an addict, and a big drinker. So they asked george was he a drug . Alcohol . Yes, he would drink alcohol. Not a lot, just a couple of beers. A beer or two every now and then . Yes. That raised the antenna a bit. In his interview with detectives, greyhound said him and george were great friends, work out together, drank together. But then, listen to this. As george kept talking, the man he said that he knew as neil, became noel. And she said you know, can noel help us out with . This it was something i was not good at, you know, because noel seemed to be good at everything i was not good. At remember, george said he never heard the name Noel Stevens before, and only new greyhound as neil smith. So, was it an honest little slip, or was george Hiding Something . Is it possible he was confused about the name . You know, greyhound used several different names [inaudible] he reverted back to know will, he had just got done telling us, i knew this man for years as neil. And then noel helped me move, so that is a tell. Why would george admit to knowing greyhound, but then lie about the name . Detectives left george at home, and made a plan, they hoped could shake out the truth. We decided to amp up the pressure. Coming up, a bold calculation by detectives was about to trigger a stunning chain reaction. He was forcing vehicles off the road, and then plowed straight into a cement area. So even though they didnt have a solid case yet, the detectives let Word Slip that they intended to arrest george. Charge him with murder. Hoping he do Something Rush and maybe incriminate himself. He was told by his former attorney that he was going to be arrested. At the same time Police Officers were showing up at my mothers doorstep. What did george do . Got into his truck, raced over to his mothers house, dropped off his daughter, roared off again. Police watching. He was driving extremely fast. He was forcing vehicles out his way. Forcing vehicles off t and then plowed straight into a [inaudible] said he just committed . Suicide so why do you think . Got that report about that . I think it is a very good invite indication to us that we are on the right track. They suicide was his intent, as the detectives assumed, it didnt work. His injuries were not severe. Still, it looked to detectives like a guilty george would rather kill himself and face a murder charge. And as georgia late in the Hospital Bed recovering, Noel Stevens gave police the final piece they needed. He confess that he killed shauna. And said his good Pal Georgia asked him to do it. So, we went to see him at the hospital. We went in and told him that he was under arrest. Did he say anything . Yes he, he asked to speak with his attorney. I just knew that georgia had something to do with it. Both Georgia And Noel were booked on murder and conspiracy. [inaudible] georgia is a controlling man. That needed control of [inaudible] Noel Stevens pleaded guilty and spent the next three years cooperating with the investigation. While george, pleaded not guilty, set up a ministry in the detention same to. He looked his family included his sister maria, square in the eye, and swore he did not do. This is the Angel Conclusion the husband always does it. He was a Cystitis Cold Suspect from day one, for sure. By, she asked, would anybody believed an addict unknown lawyer, over george . And the Detectives Theory that a guilty conscience led to the Suicide Attempt . Let me tell you, he has been on suicide preventions squads. Hes an empty. He is quite knowledgeable that about what it takes to kill yourself in a vehicle. So, driving that large vehicle into real with your seatbelt on, is not how an expert tries to commit suicide. He did something stupid. But he didnt try to kill himself. Firefighters came to his defense to. Fellow West Point grads. Childhood friends. I truly believe hes innocent. He gives too much of himself. And i think that that is one of the reasons he finds himself in this situation hes in. Were you surprised at the amount of support that george . But no. No. George, he makes lifelong connections. Thats part of his generosity. So, on a searing hot summer day, in late august, 2015, those lifelong connections sat on one side of a Las Vegas courtroom. George was adamant that this go to trial. He would not accept any plea deals, anything. On the other side . A sea of hot pink. There were just an outpouring every day. Lots of people that showed up wearing pink. Why that . Pink was shaunas favorite color. And not pale pink, hot pink. Ex work makes were there too. I wanted the jury to see that she wasnt just a vegas Cocktail Waitress. She was a good person. A beautiful person. A good human being. Prosecutors he never would have done it had george not put him up to it. Hes got the singular goal of, i need to kill my wife. And he has to keep pushing noel to do it. China Sister Paula testified that she encouraged her sister to move out. I told her that based on things she was telling me, that had been going on for quite awhile, i believed she should separate herself from george. And move to a different home. So, she did. And george increased his contact with noel. His Phone Calls to stevens in the months before the murder, prove the conspiracy, said the prosecutors. They should the jury, Georgias Phone records. If you looked at how much he called noel, 87 Phone Calls. Three, four calls a day. Yes. His mother is about once a day. Then, they said, look at this. Here are George And Noel shopping together. Buying gloves, and our clothing, a knife and on four different occasions, they bought hammers. This ends up at mr. Tiaffay s house. Where he happens have to perfectly good hammers in the garage. What else could all of this has been, the asked . But a murder kit. One final thing, told the cops that he got into Shaunas Place with a key georgia gave him. And look at this, here is georgia at the Hardware Store by achy just like the key noel used. Only one possible conclusion, said the prosecutors. Noel stevens use the hammer. The person who used Noel Stevens as george tiaffay. A, but. Its a good story, its real interesting. But its not evidence yet this is georgias defense attorney, robert langford. There is absolute reasonable doubt as to george Tiaffays Involvement in this case. Those Surveillance Videos for example, that the prosecution found so damning . None of the hammers they bought where the actual murder weapon. Besides, most of what they brought together was simple and innocent camping gear. George helping a man in need. As usual. Georgias attorney was itching to cross examine the habitual Line Liar who condemned his client. Which present to the prosecutors the dilemmas. The man at the center of their case against george, might just destroy it. Could be a real problem. Could be a real problem. There was a substantial amount of discussion between him and i over whether or not we are calling him. Does that imply you disagree . Oh, yes. We disagreed. Prosecutors had a tough decision to make and their case hinged on the outcome. Heres Keith Morrison with the conclusion of under a Full Moon. The Credibility Scrape stakes, Hes Way down here something where. And the defender is way up. Theyre absolutely. So, they argued, these two prosecutors. She said put him on the stand. My thought was, you dont understand who george is and how sinister this was until you meet noel and say this is the person that he gave access to. He said, dont take that chance. They could say this crazy, psychotic, homeless man, the day on his own. Prevailed . She did. The state calls Noel Stevens. So a Point Greyhound to the Witness Stand and offered his grisly story. I hate her in the. Head when you hit her in the head, what happened . She hits the floor. And after she hits the floor, what do you do . I jumped on top of her. You jump of top of her, what do you . To keep on hitting her. How long do you hit her four . I hit her until she doesnt move anymore. Why . Because, he said, someone told him to. Who told you to Kill Shauna . George. But was it true . Now the defense got to ask greyhound about well for starters, his addictions. Wild turkey, 1 01. Yes, vodka, whatever i can get my hands on. Do you drink it every day . Every day. Just one or two . I drink it until there is no more. Until i dont have money. I drink. Yes, and he smoked weed, he admitted. And did speed. But it got worse. Do you hear voices . Yes. Do you remember saying to that person that they sounded like monsters . Yes. Hallucinations, too. What kind of hallucinations . I see shauna sometimes. Sometimes . Do you see other people. Sometimes. I think everybody agreed that Noel Stevens is crazy as a madhouse right. How could you believe a man as crazy is that . You are outside of reality at that point. So, a man who hears voices . That got the jurys attention. One juror even submitted a question read by the judge. Did the voices you said you hear from time to time, ever tell you to Kill Shauna . No. There was the choice for the jury. George used noel as a murder weapon. Or, the drunk who heard voices killed shauna and blamed an innocent man. The lawyers, the friends, the families, from both sides, could only sit and wait. I was it was nerve wracking. For three days they waited. The prosecutors, once confident, worried. Its the hung jury situation. And so, by day three you think, oh, is there a holdup . And then finally. Here it was. Guilty of first degree murder. Guilty. George tiaffay, his face almost serene, absorb the verdict. It was just this big wheat taken off my shoulders. You know . Because i felt this entire time that shauna has it had a voice in this. And ive been so worried about representing her right. And saying the right things and making sure that i portray her as the wonderful person that she was. Both George And Noel were sentenced to life. George has no chance of parole. It was so much relief. George began serving his life sentence. And then, in july, 2017, he filed a Hand Written Petition asking to be released from prison. And it included an explosive admission. He told the court, my wife, when i truly loved dearly, is dead. Brutally murdered. And its my fault. After denying it for six years, george finally confessed. But he did not take full responsibility for what happened. Instead he explained that Prescription Drugs caused him to loosen it. God was directing him to perpetrate a crime to protect his child. Protect her from what, exactly . He did not say. And he blamed his attorney for not bringing up the Drug Induced Hallucinations at trial. Georgias family Felt Blindsided by the confession, said his sister maria. And now she feels hes where he belongs. Behind bars. Georgias petition was denied. And the young girl at the heart of the tragedy . I really do feel that my niece is the true victim in all of this. Its so tragic. And i just dont have words for what shes going to have to come to terms with and understand as she gets older. You know . Its really tough. Paula plans to make sure the daughter of Shauna Tiaffay never forgets. We talk about her mom and how much she loves her. I what we think her mom would want for her now.
