For Heat Stroke and hydrate. A heat that medical experts say can be deadly. People can actually die of heat, and people we know to be at risk are people who are homeless who are living outdoors, people who are working outdoors. Reporter in portland, with thousands living on the streets, volunteers are doing what they can to help. We have also water bottles. We have sweat rags. We have liquid i. V. For electrolytes. Reporter Cooling Centers will serve a final role where a significant part of the population doesnt have Air Conditioning. Everything to get out of heat. These cats are sitting there in 100degree weather. No Power Outages are expected but the heat raises other concerns. This means the threat of Wildfire Activity is high. With california and oregon experiencing droughts, Fire Authorities will be on alert. While the whole northwest prepares to fight the heat. And here in portland, the Record Temperature ever registered is 107 degrees, so looking at my Weather App right now, i can see that right now, the forecast is 115 degrees for tomorrow. So that would set a new alltime record for the city of portland. Authorities here are asking people to stay hydrating, limit outdoor activity, try it stay inside between 10 00 and 4 00, if you can, and of course, also theyre saying, eat light meals, and you know, do what you can to stay away from the heat, especially for those that dont have Air Conditioning and of course, go to these Cooling Centers, for a lot of these people. Those numbers, guad. Thats extraordinary. Thank you so much for the story there, the report from portland, oregon. Appreciate that. Well, everyone, at the top of the hour, the days other Breaking News, from surfside, florida, some new details on the search for survivors under way, the collapsed champlain towers. We are continuing our Search And Rescue because our first responders believe theres still a possibility. There are crevices, so theres air, theyre able to pick through. The numbers remain unchanged, at least four people have died, 11 are injured, 19 remain unaccounted 159 remain unaccounted for. And Fire And Smoke and rain have hampered search effort, Rescue Efforts say dogs are playing a large role in the desperate race against time. Stressed about trying to find survivors. These dog goes through the same thing. They actually get depressed because theyre not finding survivors and we are have to take them off and try to rehabilitate the dogs, so yes, the canines are working, if they alert to something, we put a sonar, a Search Camera in, or we hail, we yell out, but to try to confirm the location of any victim. Well, new questions today, after documents showed that in 2018, a routine Building Inspection found cracking in concrete columns, beams and walls. Over the makeshift family reunification center, aid pours in while families wait word from officials and hoping for a break through and a flurry of rescues any minute. Were just waiting right here. Were waiting for any miracle. Theres nothing that we can do. Just pray and just wait. At least to find them. Lets go to nbcs Von Hilliard joining us from surfside and at least to find them, that last gentleman was saying, ta has been extraordinary and i know you have been talking to some of these Family Members. Reporter yes, and alex, this is where a great number of these families are saying. This is a hotel one mile away from the collapsed site. And it has been more than 33 hours since a body was recovered from the site and thursday morning, the only two survivors were found. Of course there was hope you hear in the voices of their Loved Ones still being found. At the same time theres a reality that the images in the video are Setsing In for folks here, as you can see, smoke continued to come from that collapsed site, the smoldering, the fires there, and such a delicate situation, and just in this last hour, i think we have some video from our great nbc 6 affiliate out here, that has been here on the front lines, covering their own community, you can see the mayor here, Of Surfside, who is meeting with rachel spiegle, her mother judith spiegle, 65 years old, one of those missing individuals and you can see that moment there, where the mayor here of this local community is trying to be there, and reassure her that the resources are there. Take a listen to a little bit of that exchange between the two of them. Im having a hard time. Its hard to say, you know, that my Childrens Grandma is missing. And my older daughter knows. And she asked me, she said i know all of grandmas Hiding Spots in hide and seek and let me come to the apartment. Like let me help you. I want to come. And this morning, i said im going tore breakfast, im Meeting Grandma for breakfast, it will be really quick, and you know, she asked my husband, Just A Little Bit ago, while the governor was speaking, if my grandma has been found yet. Alex, these are families here. Grandmothers. Who are missing in this here. And actually, judy Spiegles Husband Kevin was out of town on the other side of the country and he wasnt involved in the collapse here. These family, 159 unaccounted for, you have the likes of luis who is looking for his son, who goes by the name of luis also, 26 years old with muscular dystrophy. You have the likes of maggie ramsey, who is here looking for her mom, on thursday, she saw that building, that her mom lives in, it collapsed. She drove the four hours to get here. Maggie is here with her husband. They have now been waiting, you know, for more than 48 hours here. Waiting for these updates. Local official, the governor, Rescue Teams. Theyre here updating folks in the morning, and in the evening here, about their updates, about what this Rescue Effort looks like, but the hardest part about it, alex, is the fact that there have been nobody, nobody that has been discovered and pulled from that rubble since yesterday morning. Families here are being asked to give their dna for the consideration that in the days and weeks ahead, there may be bodies that are discovered here, and theyre hoping that theyre able to identify them as their family. This is a tough weekend here in the miami area, alex. Vaughn, its shocking to look at the video, but it is utterly heart breaking to your point, to just think one by one, of these people that are missing, and the Domino Effect of people that love them and care about them who are so, so worried. Anyway, thank you for the story. Thank you for reporting it. I know its tough, vaughn. Appreciate it. Lets bring in Michael Nagle now, an emergency management consultant, he worked on the Rescue Efforts of the World Trade Center in 2001 and the alfred p. Murrow federal building in Oklahoma City back in 1995. Well experienced with this sort of tragedy, michael. As you look at these images were seeing from surfside, put into perspective for us what the effort is like for the first responders on the scene. First of all, what are they up against . Well, alex, good afternoon, its a herculean effort that these welltrained crews are going through. Theyre combing through, sifting the pile, inch by inch, and the photograph that you see, before you right now, looks very similar, to what We Saw at the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. The Rescue Teams again, well trained, theyre human. And every person you just mentioned is a Family Member of somebodys. Theyre not victims. Theyre people. Theyre mrs. Jones. Mrs. Smith. Mr. Jones. Everybody is a human being. And we know that. And everybody here understands that theyre hoping against hope and searching against time, remember, the last victim taken out was eight day, last one in the Mexico City Earthquake was 12 days. And i know when we made the decision after september 11th, that was september 26th, to move from rescue to recovery, there were tears streaming down our faces, as we made that choice to go from rescue to recovery. And its a heart breaking thing. I would never want to be in those shoes. A really tough time. Let me ask you about the dangers, the concerns that you have for the firefighters, and the Rescue Teams there, and anyone who might still be trapped in the rubble. What is it that, whats the first thing that comes to mind of the challenges theyre facing right now . The conditions are shifting on a second by second basis. They may put a buoy in to walk through, or lift through, it may change in a seconds notice. There may be an appliance that may be underneath the rubble pile, and the Rubble Picture youre showing right now shows a tremendous similarity to Oklahoma City bombing, and also the World Trade Center 2001. Every movement, every movement has to be carefully orchestrated, because a movement to the left may cause a fall to the right. And these crews are stopping to listen, theyre stopping to put their microphone, the sonars in, lights, theyre stopping to listen for a whisper. Theyre listening for a moan. And then they have to go to the rescuers who are using jacks, equipment, air tools, all kinds of noisier devices that they got to continue to use heavy Power Equipment to try and delayer and thats what theyre doing, theyre delayer this vane, Line By line. Inch by inch. Can you get a sense, michael, looking at the very, the aerials, any other access that youve had to seeing the situation, can you get a sense of how much the likelihood is these little spaces that can be created, these pockets of air, these because it just looks like its been so compounded, weve seen dogs running around, and theyve gone between collapsed balcony after balcony, but theyre literally right on top of each other. Alex, i do hold hope. I hold out hope that there are voids, theres places where people may have been able to survive, to get to, so i do not want to say this is over. Its not. And again, i want to run all 12 days, i dont want to stop. These crews will never stop. These crews will work at their own peril, and they will push, push, push, as you see, the canines, that get a scent, they also get depressed, and we had that at oak bomb, we had that at world trade. We have more technology today, than 25 years ago, 20 years ago, 30 years ago, but it is still the same painstaking mission of these welltrained crews, to again, Comb Inch and sift, and look for a little bit of hope. You mentioned the dogs, the fact that they get depressed, how long rather will a Dog Stay on a pile like that before theyre taken off and swapped out for over ones. How long can they go . Im not a Dog Handler but from what i remember, we would see the canines up for an hour, possibly an hour and a half or so. But remember, theyre human, too, and the other issue that we have to worry about is the crews. You know, the crews are assigned for 12hour mission, after three, four, five hours, you get pretty well spent, and that was one of our missions at Oklahoma City, we had to rotate teams, rotate crews, because what they would see, touch, smell, and do, it would take an effect that would, the pressure was immense. And everybody wanted to keep pushing, pushing forward. I have to say, ill never forget talking with firefighters coming off the pile of 9 11, michael, those conversations, actually seared in my mind. It was tough. Anyway, thank you so much, sir, for your expertise, and forgive me, giving an idea what is going on right now. For all of you at this hour, still 159 people are unaccounted for In Surfside, florida. The Death Toll standing at four. A Fire Smoke and rain, still hampering Rescue Efforts are crews are racing to find victims. We will continue monitoring all the developments as they happen throughout this day for you. Lets move to the days other developing stories. New reaction in minneapolis following the sentencing of former Police Officer Derek chauvin. A small peaceful crowd marching through the streets friday night. Calling Chauvins Sentence of 22 1 2 years behind bars as not enough time. And nbc has more, Shaquille Brewster has more from minneapolis. What can you tell us about the federal charges that Derek Chauvin is facing and 22 1 2 years for this trial. Whats next . Yesterday, you saw the door close on one phase of zark chauvins legal troubles but you mentioned there is more to come, and it comes in the form of federal government action. We heard about a month ago, a Federal Grand Jury indicted Derek Chauvin claiming that through the interaction with George Floyd, that he violated George Floyds constitutional rights. It was not only chauvin but the three other former Minneapolis Police department officers, facing that indictment, through that Federal Grand Jury. And chauvin also facing a separate indictment, but also from the Federal Grand Jury, or connected to a 2017 arrest, then involving a 14yearold boy. So there is more legal action, more times that you can expect, having to argue essentially his innocence, and different situations there. One thing that we did Note Yesterday during that Sentencing Hearing by the way is when he said to the family, the one time that we heard Derek Chauvin speak and he said to the Floyd Family that there is something upcoming that will give them comfort, that he hopes will give them comfort. Its not clear if that is related to the federal charges but there is at least some action that we know is to come. That is what is happening at the federal level. But yesterday, of course, was the closure in the state prosecution. And you know, one thing that we know about this is that this was a Prosecution Led by the Attorney General of the state of minnesota himself, keith ellison. Lets listen to what he had to say after Judge Cahill announced that 22 1 2 year sentence. Like the conviction of Derek Chauvin two months ago, Todays Sentencing is not justice, but it is another moment of real accountability On The Road to justice. Its difficult to see anyone lose their freedom. But seeing somebody lose their life through torture, over nine and a half minutes, is incomparebly worse. Those minutes and seconds are in, inerasebly sealed in the minds of the people across the world who watched George Floyd die. Derek chauvin is waking up this morning and for the foreseeable future, he will wake up in the most secure unit in this states most secure prison. We also know that, and we talked about this earlier today, the dissatisfaction you hear from the members of the community and even among the Floyd Family with that sentence, they wanted to see that maximum penalty facing Derek Chauvin, but you have to, at the end of the day, Derek Chauvin spending a significant amount of time in jail and the potential to face even more time with those federal indictments pending. Alex . Thank you so much. The Trump Organization is bracing for criminal charges. Why some attorneys see it only as the beginning. Donald trump will take the stage in a Campaign Style Rally a few hours from now and theres more in the legal peril for the family business. The Trump Organization is expected to be hit by criminal charges by the manhattans d. A. s office as soon as this coming week. We have more on the ground for us in ohio, specifically in wellington. Ali, do you expect the former president will address these potential Charges Tonight . Whos to say, alex . You and i have done enough of these rallies together where we know that thats likely, but nothing set in stone until its said on that stage. That being said, there is a statement that the former president released, referencing an ongoing witch hunt. He didnt specify what he was talking about with that, but that could be in reference to the legal issues you just talked about, the probe that is facing the Trump Organization, and the charges that could come down with significant implications for both trump and the company that bears his name. The Trump Organization bracing for criminal charges. Multiple sources telling nbc news, manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance is expected to announce an indictment of the former president s company as soon as next week. The first criminal charges stemming from vances wide ranging investigation of trumps company. Long time chief financial Officer Allen Weisselberg also potentially facing charges as prosecutors ramp up the pressure on him to cooperate with the broader probe against trump. That probe, according to court documents, centers on potentially extensive and protracted criminal conduct. Including falsifying business records, insurance fraud, and Tax Fraud. With prosecutors focused on fringe benefits allegedly awarded to people likewiseleberg. Including thousands in Rental Apartments and car lease, according to the new york times. An attorney for the Trump Organization telling nbc news, theyll plead not guilty and want the case dismissed, calling the charges competely outrageous, and describing mr. Trump as outraged. But some lawyers see this as only the beginning. Its first inning of this phase of going after the Trump Organization, and trump and his employees on the taxes. Reporter the charges could put financial as well as political pressure on trump. To defend the company he ran for decades. And comes as trumps public schedule is ramping up for summer, with rales and appearances planned across the country over the next few weeks. And so, alex, this is really the kickoff to a more public summer for the former president and in talking with allies and people who are still in touch with him, he says hes anxious to get back out there, in front of the thousands of supporters, and at these rallies, that really kept his base energized both throughout the campaign initially in 2015 and then throughout his years on the political stage, and in the White House. Its unclear, and in talking to people at this event and other republican gatherings, that the former president has appeared at, since leaving the White House, its unclear what his plans are for 2024, but there is certainly a large swath of people out here who supported him in 2020 who would like the chance to support him again in 2024. Alex . Okay, Ali Vitali thank you very much for that report. Joining me right now, California Congressman ted liu, a democratic member of the House Judiciary and foreign affairs committee. A good friend to us. Welcome back to the program. Any potential charges coming up against the Trump Organization and ha you think it signals . Thank you, alex, for your question. Tax fraud is a crime. And based on on the public reporting it appears that the Trump Organization engaged in a form of Tax Fraud by not paying Payroll Taxes on certain kinds of compensation that it gave to their employees. We will know more when the Charging Documents are revealed. And this is only the first step of what could be additional charges against the Trump Organization. Okay. As Donald Trump prepares to hold this ohio rally this evening, if Trump Inc. Faces criminal charges, will it have any impact on his political influence . Will it have any impact on any future political prospects . It could be a big distraction for the former president. Hes got to spend time and money and resources, engaged in that kind of lawsuit against his company. It also doesnt look good for the former president to be engaged in a form of Tax Fraud. So well see what the charges actually are, and we actually have to keep in mind that in america, you are given the presumption of innocence. So we do have to start with the presumption of innocence, and then see what the evidence shows. Absolutely true. I agree with you. But i guess im just curious, if someone is in the middle of a criminal investigation, are they in general allowed to run for office . I mean i dont know that ive familiarized myself with someone who would be running for office, particularly high office that would be facing criminal charges at the same time. You could certainly run for office, but it would not be a very good factor in the Voters Opinion of you but yes you could still run for office. Okay. Lets turn to the January 6th attack on the capitol, the house is expected to vote next week on Speaker Pelosis select committee with subpoena powers on the riot and your thoughts on that committee and would you want to serve on it if a sked . Im very pleased that Speaker Pelosi decided to form a select committee, of the January 6th insurrection, and it will be bipartisan in the sense that there will be both democrats and republicans on this select committee. Its important to know that in the house, Republicans Cannot block subpoenas. And so that is going to be very powerful tool for this committee to use. And for the membership of the committee, that is up to the speaker. When youre saying that the republicans Cant Block a subpoena, would that include the house minority leader, Kevin Mccarthy, could he be subpoenaed then . Yes, he could. It would depend on where the facts and evidence leads the committee to explore. Okay. In terms of the select committee, and who would make that up, your colleague Hakim Jeffries gave msnbc his prediction for republicans who could be appointed so serve. Take a listen to what he said. It wouldnt shock me if he chose jim Jordan And Marjorie Taylor Greene and hes got quite a collection of characters to choose from. Its not my expectation, given Kevin Mccarthys past practice that he will do anything other than bend a me to Donald Trump. In fact, we probably could expect that Donald Trump over the next few days will issue recommendations as to who he thinks should be on this committee. And Kevin Mccarthy will follow those recommendations, hook, line an sinker. But thats not going to stop up from uncovering the truth. He mentions the group, is that Group A possibly, and were that to happen, would it make a Mock River the committee given their positions thus far publicly . The way it works in the house is that each party decides which members they want to put on which committees. So well see what Kevin Mccarthy does. My hope is that he will put on reasonable rational members of congress. But it is up to the republican party, and unfortunately, we are seeing the republican party take a very severe right turn and become radicalized as we watch all of these folks on their side with conspiracy theories. Hopefully he wont put those people on the committee. After several weeks, michael fanone, an officer injured during the capitol riot, he was finally granted a meeting with Kevin Mccarthy and he asked mccarthy to denounce the House Republicans who voted against the gold medal bill. He came away disappointed. Take a listen to what he said. I asked him specifically for a commitment to denounce that publicly, and he said that he would address it at a personal level with some of those members. But again, i think that as a leader of the House Republican, or im sorry, as a leader of the House Republican party, its important to hear those denouncements publicly. Congressman, can you put any logic as to why there is still such hesitancy to call out anyone who downplays the reality of the riot . Officer fanone risked his life and he was beaten and stunned so many times, he suffered a Heart Attack, and he was doing that to protect the republican leader Kevin Mccarthy, and other members of congress. It is completely shameful and disrespectful that the republican leader Kevin Mccarthy cant even bring himself to tell the truth, that January 6th, we had an insurrection, that that insurrection was not caused by the fbi, it was caused by protrump insurrectionists, and that we should be awarding gold medals to all the Police Officers who defended us. I hope Kevin Mccarthy will make these statements public and also tell the simple truth that the election was not stolen. That is how you show respect for our Police Officers. California congressman ted lieu, its always a pleasure, thank you so much. Rescuers are spending a third day searching for survivors in miami but today there is a report that suggests it might have all been prevented. The author of that report next. What a mess. We also have more Breaking News on the Apartment Building Collapse In Surfside, florida. Rescue workers are battling heavy smoke conditions and intermittent rainfall, but officials say theyre not close to giving up yet. Were facing very incredible difficulties with this fire. The fire has been going on for a while. Its a very deep fire. Its extremely difficult to locate the source of the fire. And so they have been working around the clock, these Fire Rescue teams, these Brave Min and women, under the rubble. Well, the front page of the Miami Herald today says it all, the pain grows, as rescuers push on and families wait. Miami herald reporter Aaron Liebowitz joining me now, cowrote the article, along with the 2018 inspection in fact of the tower that flagged a quote major error. What can you tell us about this major error. Are you hearing any official response to these Reports Today . Thank you for having me. The town Of Surfside released a number of new documents late last night, one of those documents was a 2018 report by an engineer who had reviewed the building, and suggested that there were Design Flaws, essentially, in part of the building, and specifically in its pool deck area, which was preventing proper drainage of the water from that area. The suggestion in this 2018 report was that over time, this had resulted in damage to the concrete, both at the pool deck area, and below, in the parking garage. I want to be clear at this point, theres no clear answer as to why this took place. Experts say they have never seen anything quite like this, and it is going to be a while before we really know exactly what happened, but its clear that at least as of a few years ago, there were some fairly serious issues that were found. Aaron, i want to pick up what you say, youre saying that there is a suggestion there was a Design Flaw here, its my understanding this building was built in 1981, that is 40 years ago, has anyone offered an explanation as to why it took this long to figure out there might be a problem . Well, in miamidade county, theres a law that mandates that after 40 years, every, or the vast majority of buildings are required to undergo recertification. And this building was actually just in the early stages of that process. They were getting ready to undergo millions of dollars in renovations, work to replace the roof had actually just begun several weeks ago, and it appears from some of these reports that were just released that the building had at least, the Condo Association had at least made some efforts a few years ago, to start to look into what needed to be done. Its not clear at this point if any of those issues were addressed between then and now, but it did appear some of the plans that We Saw that were offered, on what was still to be done, going forward, that there was a lot of cracking and concrete and some significant concerns. There was nothing in the report that said, that warned of something this catastrophic, of course, but there were some concerns. Youve heard the surfside mayor saying he wants to evacuate at least temporarily a nearly identical Tower Building nearby. Have you heard anything from the residents of that tower . I havent spoken specifically with those residents. But i have heard generally from Town Officials In Surfside that theyre very concerned, because its the North Tower, the South Tower is the one that collapsed, and the North Tower was constructed right around the same time, similar design, and you know, there seems to be some concern that perhaps there could be an issue there. We dont have all of the records that we do now from the South Building to confirm that the design is exactly the same, and we dont know exactly what concerns there were, but i think the mayor and others are trying to act as cautiously as possible. Understandably so. Thank you so much. Coming up next, fresh perspective on a Fiveday Stretch during Donald Trumps bout with covid. Now to a shocking new report from the Washington Post, detailing the extraordinary effort to save Donald Trump from covid back in october, including how the former president s bout with coronavirus was far more severe than we knew. The post writing a Fiveday Stretch in october, 2020, from the moment White House officials began an extraordinary effort to get trump lifesaving drugs, to the day the president returned to the White House from the hospital, marked a dramatic Turning Point in the nations flailing coronavirus response. Joining me now, ann gurren, us what correspondent for the Washington Post and Msnbc Contributor and good friend. Good to see you. This reporting is based on excerpts from your colleague the at the post and the new book which can is called nightmare scenario. I know you were covering the White House at the time. First of all, what do you remember . Well, i think we remember, also, a difference in the time between the president going to the hospital, when he was drawn and wobbly and we all thought, first of all, oh, my goodness, theyre putting the president in the hospital, and he looks terrible. This must be far worse than theyre telling us. And the sort of miraculous turnaround at Walter Reed and walking back out three days later, discarding his mask, you showed us a picture there a moment ago, in the leadup, that was taken from the balcony at the White House, when the president was clearly still sick, was almost certainly still contagious, but had insisted on being released from the hospital, and his aides were hoping that he would come out a changed man, and that moment, when he walks up to the top of the stairs on the balcony, still not looking great, frankly, and whips off the mask, they knew right then, and we all knew watching it, that nothing had changed. And in fact, we watched that, he was very winded when he got up to the balcony, we could see he was labored breathing, and to your point, he turned around, mask off, he put it in his pocket, and went into the White House, where staffers were, he was unmasked, i mean goodness knows, to your point, he was still communicable, they believe, with covid. So this piece that addresses what youre saying about what the hope was, and ill just use the quote here, trumps medical advisers hoped that with coronavirus, it would inspire him to take the virus seriously, perhaps now, they thought, he would put the health and medical officials front and center in the response. Instead, trump emerged from the experience ever more the defiant and urged others to not let it dominate their lives disregarding he had access to Health Care and treatments unavailable to other americans. It was, several advisers said, the last chance to turn the response around, and once the opportunity passed, it was the point of no return. So you know, again, you were covering the White House. Was that the impression that you got from those who had hoped that there would be a turnaround, that they just said, this is how its going to be going forward . Yes, i mean there was amazing Reporting Filling in the gaps here, but the basic outline of this, we did know at the time, covering the White House, that the president clearly had been sicker than they had let on, that he had received an array of medical treatments, not available to any other human on the planet. They were used for compassionate use, right . They had gotten clearance. I think Hope Hicks was the first to get it in the White House, she came down with covid first and they had to use special protocol to get Fda Approval for this, but again, other americans wouldnt have gotten this. Absolutely. And thats actually some of The Real News in this book, is fitting together how a lot of that, those Emergency Decisions were made. And the interviews with the medical professionals who again were hoping that the president would come out of this, with a different attitude, toward the coronavirus. Remember, this is all taking place one month before the election. And so covering it, we were doing, we were doing so in a plim context, and the political context and the president was responding in a political context. It is sort of hard to remember now, that all of these things were happening at the same time. He was probably sick when he did the debate in cleveland, which i covered, and we are all sort of struck that night, by how poorly the president appeared to perform. I mean hes never a great dataer, but he seemed really off his game and it now makes sense, he was probably sick then, and he probably knew that he wasnt feeling well, he may have suspected at that time that he had had the virus, and was very quickly thereafter that he was diagnosed. On wednesday, the president announced his strategy that includes providing Law Enforcement with more resources, investing in communities, and cracking down on illegal Gun Dealers. Its Zero Tolerance for Gun Dealers who willfully violate key existing laws and regulations. And i repeat, Zero Tolerance. Well find you. And we will seek your license to sell guns. Well make sure you Cant Sell Death and mayhem on our streets. Its an outrage. It has to end. And well end it. Period. Joining me now is chris brown, united against Gun Violence, and welcome back to the broadcast, look at the homicide rates, it is extraordinary, up 49 since 2019, 24 in just this last year. Were also seeing a 22 spike in gun assaults. What do you think is causing this deadly and terrifying spree . Its likely a combination of several factors, alex. During the pandemic, the worst days of the pandemic, over the last year, We Saw 64 increase in Gun Sales across this country, and we have unfortunately a real problem that President Biden is addressing, in his remarks the other day, he was talking about executive actions, he is putting atf and d. O. J. In charge, of cracking down on the Gun Dealers that are contributing to huge sales of Crime Guns across this country. Alex, this is not a new problem. The enforcement associated with this that President Biden talked about yesterday is were going to tackle homicide across this country, especially the increase were seeing, we need two things, we need to address the Demand Side of the equation, we need money for Violence Intervention programs across the country. President biden provided that in april. 5 Billion in the infrastructure bill. And we need to address the supply side. What does that mean . That means going after the roughly 5 of Gun Dealers that are contributing to the sale of 90, 90, percent of Crime Guns. Why is that important . Because we have more mcdonalds we have more Gun Dealers in this country than mcdonalds and starbucks combined. If you dont know who those dealers are that are contributing to the crime gun problem, you have no hope as a Law Enforcement officer in communities serving across this country of shutting them down. He is giving the tools and we at brady have been working on this for over a decade, alex, and we are thrilled to see basically nationalizing our crime Guns Program that we have had in effect in communities across this country. Well, congratulations, let me tell you, but those stats are stunning to me. I mean, i just its hard to comprehend the numbers there of Gun Dealers you are talking b i know youve met with the president , you have had conversations. Tell me about the tone of those conversations from the president s standpoint. Does he get frustrated . Does he get angry . Does he just think the Gun Killings are outrageous in this country . He think theyre outrageous, Susan Rice and Cedric Richmond who are leaders in his administration and helping launch these initiatives as well as Merrick Garland think theyre outrageous. Do you know what, hes using his experience in the senate as a legislator, as the Vice President who was implementing some of the solutions that President Obama put in place to really target solutions that he knows works. Look, he has called again and again not just for congress to act, he wants that to happen, we need expanded Background Checks and assault weapons ban, but hes figuring out what we need to do from executive action. All of these things hes putting in place dont require new laws, alex, they require enforcement. We hear a lot about enforcement in this country, but this president is making that enforcement happen. Let me ask you really quickly do you think that upping Police Presence in high crime communities is a solution or does it create more problems . Just real quick. I think what we need to do is make sure that Police Officers are adequately trained and that they focus on prevention. We have far too many communities awash in these Crime Guns. Help them go after the source of those guns and make sure that communities individuals in those communities can make different choices and have access to services. Thats what the president is focusing on and i think thats the right thing. Okay. Chris brown, open invitation anytime you want to come on back and talk to me. Thank you so much. New today, that highly anticipated Intelligence Report On Ufos has finally been released, but the results are generating more questions, in fact, than answers. The Department Of Defense found that of the 144 reports of mysterious objects, only one can be explained. Joining me now Gideon Lewis Krause Staff Writer for The New Yorker and an Msnbc Contributor. Welcome to you. Lets get to the one object they were able to identify, turned out to be a large deflating balloon, right . Absolutely no confirmed sightings. Also there is a large part of the report that remains classified from the public. Tell me what you make. What do you interpret of this report. Was there anything that surprised you or did you expect this . Well, the thing i think thats most surprising is that the report stipulates that they basically restricted themselves to the past few years when there have been new Guidance Mechanisms in place for pilots and other people to report these things. So its 144 reports, but they certainly strongly imply that the vast majority of these are from probably just the last two years. Among those we have as the report explains 80 of them that have multisensor corroboration and 18 of them which seem to display unusual Flight Characteristics of one variety of another. So this is only a ninepage report, but i agree with you that it certainly raises far more questions than it answers. So when some of the report leaked last month, gideon, there were hints that, you know, it could be advanced technology from foreign countries like russia or china, but then the report goes on to say we do not have any data that indicates that any of these unidentified Air Phenomena are part of a foreign Collection Program nor do we have any data that it is indicative of a major technological advancement by a potential adversary. So do you interpret that as we rule out that theory or they just dont have enough data . I mean, clearly its written in a very cautious bureaucratic way so its hard to draw any very strong inferences, but this isnt particularly new. I mean, weve been hearing Senator Rubio Talk about the fact that these do not appear to be russian or chinese devices for a year at this point. So this only seems to confirm what we have mostly been hearing so far which is that the Intelligence Community has not seemed to strongly suspect that these are adversarial and of course they could still be something like drones, but, you know, this he leave themselves open and its hard to evaluate given that they are not publishing the underlying data here. So people like you, yourself, others who study these kinds of incidents, what do you think about all of it . I think that weve had many decades of attempts to grapple with the mystery of unrecognizable stuff in their air space, there have been other reports like this before. There was a committee that met in the late 60s, there was a Secret British committee that met about 20 years ago and spent a few years looking into this, and generally these reports historically are inconclusive. There are plenty of precedence for people just throwing up their hands and saying Theres Something mysterious here that we cant quite get to the bottom of and were going to continue to kick the ufo can down the road. Even in the wake of the report, weve already seen that Congressman Schiff and Senator Rubio have called for further Investigation And Congressman carson of indiana has even propose that had we should have public hearings. It would be the first time that we had public hearings about ufos since 1966. Wouldnt that be extraordinary. I know you will stay on the case, gideon, and come back and report to us. Thats going to do it for me on this edition of Alex Witt reports. My friend Yasmin Vossoughian now continues our coverage. Good afternoon, everybody, im Yasmin Vossoughian.
