But where we start tonight is a story in todays news that starts one way, and then at the very end it veers off in an unexpected direction. This is like youre going along singing the alphabet and then you say 47. 47 is what comes next . Why did we viewer off . Here is the story. See if you can see where the unexpected fear, pluck twist comes in. Heres how the story is headlined in the detroit free press. Michigan republicans michigan republicanled investigation rejects trumps claim that November 3rd Election was stolen. Heres the Associated Press headline, Senate Republican probe, no systemic fraud in michigan election. Heres the New York Times headline, this was just posted tonight, Michigan Republicans de bunk voter fraud claims in unsparing report. Unsparing is right. The lead in the times piece tonight i think some sub why thats the right word. Quote, a Committee Led by Michigan Republicans published an extraordinary debunking of voter fraud claims in the state, delivering a comprehensive rebuke to a litany of accusations about improprieties in the 2020 election. The 55page report produced by a Michigan State committee of three publicans and one democrat is a systematic rebuttal to an array of false claims about the election from supporters of former president donald trump. The report is unsparing in its criticism of those who promoted false theories about the election. It debunks claims from trump allies including mike lindell the chief executive of my pillow. And Rudolph Giuliani the former president s lawyer and even mr. Trump himself. And this report from Michigan Republicans is actually not just unsparing criticism. Off the false claims about supposed fraud in the election and the people who have brought those false claims to public attention. The conservativeleaning detroit news puts in their lead about the story tonight, the fact that these Michigan Republicans are even now calling for the state of michigan to investigate and potentially prosecute people who have been making these false fraud claims about the election. These claims that there was something so wrong in michigan, particularly in Interim County michigan which has become a real buzzword for the trump election trump fantasists. Its a real bullseye for some very false claims by President Trump and his supporters. That is the detroit news headline about it. Senate report recommends they investigate Election Fraud claims. This is from the actual report, that is where they get that. Events in Interim County michigan sparked a significant amount of concern about the Technology Used to count ballots. This concern led to much speculation, assumptions, misinformation and in some cases, outright lie was made to create confusion. The many hours of testimony for the Committee Show these claims are unjustified and unfair to the people of Interim County and the state of michigan. It has also been unfair to the people across america. The county was mentioned by officials at the white house, in the media, at rallies and other online documentaries. The Committee Finds those promoting this county as the prime evidence of a nation wide conspiracy to steal the election, those making those claims place all other statements and actions they make in a position of zero credibility. Ideas and speculation that Antrim County elections manipulated the vote by hander electronically are indefensible. The committee is appalled at what can only be deduced as a woeful ignorance or avoidance of this proof perpetuated by some leading such speculation. The Committee Recommends that misleading and false information about Antrim County to raise money, or publicity to their own ends. So again, this is a michigan Senate Republican investigation. And the republicans in the senate in michigan say not only is the Antrim County michigan fraught stuff total bunk. Its also so obviously bunk that people continuing to push that nonsense should potentially be criminally investigated for perpetuating a fraud. While. Okay then. Having bury the Antrim County Election Fraud fantasies about 30 feet deep, at that point, Michigan Republicans writing this report then move on to just systematically ripped their way through all the other trump Election Fraud fantasy nonsense claims about their state. Van vista gate and they proven all timidly conclude that no, tons of dead people do not vote in michigan. They did found there was one old lady, a 92 year old lady who quote died four days before the November 2020 election. Research showed she has submitted her completed Absentee Ballot part to the election and prior to her death. She did all her voting work prior to dying, turns out. They also found that no hundreds of thousands of ballots were not wrongfully sent out to michigan voters, despite claims to the contrary from President Trump and his supporters. They also found that not only worth are no problems with the Voting Machines in Antrim County michigan which has been the bullseye for so many of their fake fraud claims. They found there were also no problems with the machines at the big Tabulation Center in detroit. Instead, and this is remarkable, the republican investigation found that the cause of the chaos at that did short Counting Center in the days after the election was actually the fault of the local Republican Party. They called on Trump Supporters to come down and mob the Counting Center to protest the count. The report actually says the local Republican Party in detroit Should Repudiate Quote the actions of certain individuals that created a panic and had untrained and a numbered Persons Descending on the tc f center. This is the state the Republican Party in detroit caused panic and they should repudiate their members who did that. How bad the incessant trump claims that michigan had more votes cast in michigan has voters . Well, on page 25 of their report, Michigan Republicans have now published this table showing that in all the places trump says that happen including detroit, there was actually not more votes cast than folders, far from it. Even Giovanni Pulitzer the guy with a madeup name whose secret Artifact Detector that is being used in arizona, for their fake audit, the Michigan Republicans examined testimony from Giovanni Pulitzer about Election Fraud and found his testimony to be quote untrue and a complete fabrication. They also looked at the my pillow guy, mike lindell who has turned the trumps gonna be reinstated thing in a traveling road show across the country. Michigan Senate Republicans looked at Mike Lindells claim about votes being stolen are switched or hacked in michigan. They found quote no such activities took place they found his claims to be beyond any statistical credulity. They found his whole case to be quote ignorant of the actual election process. So in some, this report, again from republicans, in the Michigan State senate, finds that the noise and nonsense about the election somehow being stolen from trump is bunk. They chased down every Conspiracy Theory, every supposed scandal and they found it to all be bunk. And they concluded, in no Uncertain Terms that it ought to be treated as such. This was their conclusion this Committee Found no evidence of widespread or systematic fraud in michigans prosecution of the 2020 election. The committee can confidently assert that it has been throw an examination of numerous allegations of on lawful actions fraud, vote theft or any other description which would cause citizens to doubt the integrity of michigans 2020 election results. , are clear finding is that citizens should be confident the results represent the true results of the ballots cast by the people of michigan. The committee strongly recommend citizen choose a critical eye and ear towards those who have pushed demonstrably false theories for their own personal gain. Wow. This is damning. This is endeareds unsparing. No fraud in the michigan election. No steel, that needs to be stopped in michigan. No actual significant problems of any kind with the michigan vote. The people trying to sell you on the idea that there were problems in the election are ignorant and in some cases there consciously trying to defraud the American People and they ought to be investigated and potentially prosecuted for it, wow. That is the conclusion of michigan Senate Republicans who looked into the hysterical, and still growing claims, from President Trump and his supporters that the michigan election is one of the epicenters for how the election was stolen. It is remarkable. Now here is the turn. [laughs] its at 47. Heres where the story takes an absolutely inexplicable turn. After concluding this, right, after publishing this report thoroughly investigating all the nonsense, trump election trump claims about there being something wrong with the michigan president ial election. After Finding Unsparingly and with an Exclamation Point that all this potent Election Fraud claim are bunk and none of that nonsense happened, after concluding that, the Michigan Republicans who authored this report go on to say that they believe michigan should nevertheless take action to severely restrict voting in the state, in the wake of the 2020 election. Because of all the doubts about the 2020 election and its integrity. Wait, what . They even say that maybe michigan should pursue an arizonastyle audit, depending on what the results of the audit are which they are watching very closely they want hesitate to recommend that maybe michigan should do that to. The arizona audits, remember the one using the secret Detection Technology from a guy whose claims these Michigan Republicans just found to be untrue in a complete fabrication. But they want to use thats supposed to technology to audit the michigan result which they just found to be sound, and not have been fraudulent or problematic at all . The michigan Senate Republican who is the chair of the committee that this investigation wrote this report, debunking all the claims about supposed fraud in michigans election. He also served on the republican controlled Election Committee in the Michigan State senate. And on that committee, he and other republicans, are citing the widespread belief and all of these false Conspiracy Theory about fraud in the michigan election as the reason michigan needs, i kid you not, 39 new laws. They are proposing this year to restrict voting this year in the state. Restricting absentee voting, restricting early voting, restricting day of voting, restricting drop box voting. Literally just today as they drop this report saying there were no problems in michigans election that all the fraud claims are all made up, at the same time, on the same day, today, Michigan Republicans events a new law that will dramatically tough in the states voter i. D. Standards, potentially disenfranchising Tens Of Thousands of michigan voters. Because of all the worries about the integrity of the 2020 election in michigan, though worries that the ages debunked systematically as nonsense that is being promoted by fraudsters who want to profit on it and in some cases out to be prosecuted for it. When you use something as a pretext, it means youre citing something as a justification for your actions, but youre going to do what youre going to do anyway. Regardless of whether or not you actually believe in the thing that youre saying to actually justify your actions youre, going to justify those actions anyway. When you say fault pretext. False is actually redundant. A pretext is by Definition Something that isnt the real justification for your actions. In this case, today, in michigan, Michigan Republicans have proven out loud and angry detail that they do not even believe their own stated justifications for why they are acting to rescind Voting Rights in draconian terms in the state of michigan. They dont even believe their own justifications, but theyre doing it anyway. This is one very clear snapshot of the republican parties approach to Voting Rights in the wake of the 2020 election. This is the predominant political dynamic at work in the two parties right now. Thats how republicans are approaching it. On the other side . Democrats, whats your response . Democrats in control of Congress Really are going to do anything to fight back for Voting Rights when this is the way the fight is being waged on the other side . Really . Tonight, there is consternation among democrats as to whether theyre going to be able to take any action in congress to bolster Voting Rights as republicans in the states continue to advance more legislation to restrict voting. And as democrats seek hamstrung by their parties in abilities to bypass the filibuster to get legislation debated, let alone passed at the federal level. That might help fight back against some of those antiVoting Rights restrictions. Tonight, senators are also, seemingly, getting closer to some kind of action, maybe . On the issue of infrastructure. Tonight, participants from both parties in a bipartisan sub group of senators thats been talking about infrastructure senators from both sides of the aisle, part of that group, told the Washington Post tonight that they think they have a tentative deal among themselves. And crucially, they believe may have support from the Biden White House as well. Joining us now, is massachusetts senator elizabeth warner. Senator warren, thank you for taking time for us being here. Thank you thank you, its good to be with. Let me talk to first about infrastructure. Was your understanding of the lay of the land right now in terms of how this is moving . And what proposal is actionable and on the table . Okay, the lay of the land is that there will be one Infrastructure Deal. And it will be a big Infrastructure Deal. This will be an Infrastructure Deal, we call it an Infrastructure Deal, but its really about the kind of country we want to be Going Forward. Its about making repairs from the past. But its about making opportunity for everyone. Right now, there is a group thats called this Bipartisan Group, and theyre negotiating a part of it. A part of it around roads, bridges. Around some important pieces like broadband. But there is a whole lot more that were going to do. If we want people to be able to go to work. If we want people to be able to have opportunities. Then we need to make sure that child care, universal child care, is available, is affordable, is high quality, for everyone. We need to make sure that were building a green energy system. And a Green Transportation system. And a part of this is how were going to pay for it. And that means making sure that billionaires and giant corporations are paying a fair share, and that were in forcing the tax laws. So, all of this is how we are going this is the plan. For this administration, for this congress, about how we move this economy. How we move this country forward. I think the pieces are starting to coalesce. You as a very progressive member of the United States senate, if the Bipartisan Group that made this pronouncement tonight that they think theyve got a deal if these agreed on something that is reasonable investments and you think its not enough, you may believe that were still moving in the right direction. If that smaller piece of it gets embedded into the larger instruct Structure Bill that incorporates more of the things that you were talking about theirs priorities. Thats exactly the right way to think of it. The smaller piece gets embedded in a larger piece. Now, very maybe voted separately, but it is one Infrastructure Deal. I cant vote for some small subset that, you know, the infrastructure literally leaves the station and childcare gets left on the platform. Green energy gets left on the platform. Billionaires dont have to pay, gets left on the platform. Its that all of the pieces have to move, because ultimately, its one deal. How are democrats doing right now in your estimation, in terms of choosing their priorities . Working together between capitol hill and the white house . And getting stuff done. There is not just worry and criticism. I think real consternation among people in the country right now, to see whats happening on Voting Rights. To see republican steamrolling Voting Rights in every state of the country where theyve got control, and the apparent impotence on capitol hill. Democrats unable to surpass the republican filibuster and do anything to bolster Voting Rights. I think theres also some consternation about how long its been that these Infrastructure Talks have been going, without any signs that were moving towards passing anything. Its been a long time since the covid relief bill passed. How do you think democrats are doing overall . W do you think the threat to y on voting is enormous. This one is existential. We have to fight back against republicans cutting out people from being able to vote. And cutting out the effectiveness of their vote. Remember, we keep talking about the voting package, its not only about access to the polls, its about access to things things like banning things like gerrymandering and getting that under control. Its about exposing dark money and trying to squeeze it out of elections. Its about anticorruption and conflicts of interest. So, theres a lot there that is about protecting our democracy. Always remember first, the good part. And that is, we had hr1 that passed the house. But the time it got to the senate, the republicans had figured out more ways to suppress the vote and to keep people from democracy from functions functioning. So we had more work to do in the senate to be able to add to the original bill. And weve had to have some negotiations. But keep in mind, we now have every single democrat on board with a Voting Rights bill. An Anti Corruption bill. Thats powerfully important. Obviously, were hung up now on the filibuster. So, the conversations are Going Forward about various ways we can approach that. Some people want to talk about it talking filibuster as a way to say, make them stand up and talk about this. Take as long as it takes. But protect our vote. Others are talking about a one time exception to the filibuster rules saying, yes, i get it, there are some people in the senate who are not ready to get rid of the filibuster. But when it comes to voting, when it comes to our democracy, that is so urgent we must put that first. That is our constitutional responsibility. Theres some other details that people are talking about. But the point is, we understand the urgency of the moment and we are talking with each other and trying to get ourselves passed this point. Has it gone as smoothly as i want . Heck no . Come on, ive been fighting against the filibuster for years now. It gives Mitch Mcconnell a veto and i am oppose. I think we should get rid of it. So that we can do a whole lot of things. But we are where we are. And we are a senate, as you know, of only 50 democrats. And we have the Vice President to be able to break the tie. That means weve got to pull this together in a way that gets everyone on board. We are moving. Were not moving fast enough, but we are moving and we are moving in the right direction. And i will give It Everything ive got to push it on over the line. Weve got to protect the vote in america. Tect the vot senator warren. That is a very helpful insight into what is going on among you and your colleagues on the hill right now. I know this is going to be a tough an energetic week. Both david keene and john lott were invited to address the graduates from James Madison academy. And they both said yes, they put on their robes and their funny hats. They travel to las vegas they prepared speeches about following your hopes and dreams, also about the importance of the Second Amendment, that is why they were there. The school told him that as a thank you for giving those speeches they would both be awarded the James Madison academys keeper of the Constitution Award. This is them having received their statues to commemorate their receiving those awards. It seems a little bit on the nose, right . Gun themed school gets gun themed speakers to give guns themed speeches, and receive a gun themed award for doing that. Its a little on the nose. There were some other signs to that a vigilant person may have picked up on early on. Lets look at that website again for the James Madison academy. Parts of it look quite official, like the things you might expect but then there are Little Things that seem weird like this, call us at 800 to apply. Call us to apply. Also if you run a history of their web address for the James Madison academys website, it turns out the Schools Website has only existed since april of this year. Thats weird. Unbeknownst to these two pro gun advocates they were both invited to speak at a fake graduation for a fake school. And they gave their pro gun speeches in front of empty white chairs in a las vegas venue. According to one group that tracks gun death statistics, that 3044 number, thats the number of High School Seniors we shouldve put on their caps and gowns and gotten their diplomas this year but instead they died. They were victims of gun violence and they never made it to this years graduation. That is the class of 2021 in gun violence deaths. And it is a dramatic thing to watch a sitting and are a board member telling 300,000 chairs that they need to follow their hopes and dreams. Theyre not gonna follow their hopes and dreams. Let me begin by telling you what an honor it is to be here to help celebrate your graduation. Picture for a minute the young James Madison, for whom this school is named. This year you focus on one of the most important of madisons amendment, the Second Amendment. There are some who will continue to fight the Second Amendment but i would be willing to bet that many of you would be among those who stand up and prevent them from succeeding. Not everyone what is your emergency . Defending it is a challenge and a duty that americans like you somebody is in the School Shooting in my classroom. Who understand what has made the country is anybody injured . Yes a lot of people, please help. An overwhelming majority of you will go to college while others may decide their dream dictates a different route to success. Do you know how many people are injured . So my advice to use simple enough, follow your dreams. Make it a reality. My daughter just texted me from school. And never for a minute doubt that you can achieve that dream. Thank you. Oh my god. Representings kids who did not graduate this year because they were killed in gun violence in the United States. David keene and john lott, they were told before the actual event they needed to protect that is what this video is from, after the run through they were told the actual graduation was canceled because of a credible threat of violence. Buzzfeed news called up with a pro and are a commentator after the videos republish and he said he had no idea what had happened here. He told buzzfeed quote, youre telling me the whole thing was a setup . No i didnt know that. We reached out to david keene to get his response and we havent heard back from him. This remarkable demonstrative experiment, this stunt was orchestrated by a gun Safety Advocacy Group called change the ref. The group pointed out today that quote, ironically had the men conducted a proper Background Check on the school they wouldve seen that the school is fake. They said they were trying to illustrate here that the thousands of students lost to gun violence wont be forgotten. They wanted to force progun advocates to literally face the consequences of their policies. They call those 3000 empty seats, the loss class. This Advocacy Group change the ref, was founded by manuel all of, in 2018 their son was killed at Stoneman Douglas high school in parkland, florida. He was 17 years old. He was a great writer, an athlete, he loved music. His father manuel said today that he was not scared to pull off this sort of unbelievable piece of advocacy, and honestly subterfuge he said quote, we need to show were brave and not afraid of these guys. Weve already felt the worst possible situation, there is no threat that could make me feel different. Actions, not words. Joining us now is manuel all over. My wife, patricia, myself, my daughter andrea, we love the fact that the name came from joaquin and not from us. It is an extension of joaquins activism. I know that you and your wife patricia were onsite, were behind the scenes and able to watch while these pro and are a guys were giving their speeches in front of that seat of empty chairs. I just need to ask how was that for you, it must have been emotional . It was very emotional, we were not allowed they told me that they might recognize me, but i had no idea that i was recognizable. We didnt want to take the risk of anything going wrong. I got locked up in the rv and i was watching the whole thing. It was very emotional. Because we were part of a process. We knew exactly every step. Everything that was happening, it came out exactly the way we plant. Do you feel any more hope then you have felt in the past, that there will be action on any element of gun safety including Background Checks which you have been pushing to the forefront . Do you feel any more hopeful . Do you see any other reason that something might finally change . Im gonna give you a great reason for me to think that things are different. I am having an interview with you, not because there was a mass shooting, but because we are doing something to prevent this from happening. So now we handle the conversation. We dont need to wait for a new tragedy to bring the subject and that is a great advance for us in everyone that is fighting this epidemic here that is killing people. Every single day. It is preventable, but just because some of our leaders are part of the problem, its kind of on hold being part of the solution. I think we controlled the information, we do things like what you just saw, were not the only group that is working in that direction. Hopefully, that young generation will make things happen. Its not gonna happen tomorrow, or next year, but it will happen in a few years. Just like it happened with the tobacco industry. Ive always said that we need to advertised the truth. And thats 40 more than the year before. We estimate about 22 million guns were purchased in 2020. A 64 increase over the year before. Obviously the pandemic and those gun sales were merging from the pandemic. Now were seeing gun violence get even worse. Thats sort of the logical outcome. So, President Bidens approach is so important. Hes taking strong action on ghost guns and funding intervention programs. Nominating a strong leader to the 80th. But we need congress to act. We need federal lots finally after 25 years. Right now we are all only as close as only as safe as the closest state with the weakest gun laws. And you mentioned trafficking. We know guns from states with weak gun laws are being trafficked into states with strong gun laws. So we really do need the senate to finally pass laws like Background Checks. Laws lik and the Background Checks laws, this patchwork that you described, thats important. Because not only are they differences sea to stay, theres whole categories of gun purchases that arent covered. That dont require a Background Check at all because of the lack of federal legislation to require that. I think theres been so much focus on how Background Checks could be standardize and expanded to apply to more gun sales in more places. But even if that doesnt happen, even if there isnt that work from congress to do what you just described their, is what the president described today something that is enforceable . Something that could make it a media then for existing gun owners have been happily floating the law and getting away with it . Absolutely.
