Reporter just this year alone, 14 states have already enacted laws that make it tougher for people to vote, with more than 60 other pieces of legislation currently working their way through state legislatures. Thats why lawmakers, as well as activists here in texas say its so important for there to be federal. This is the toughest state in the country to vote and get registered to vote. On top of that, the legislature this last year proposed to make it harder, sb7, the Voter Suppression Bill would reserve the right to overturn future elections based simply on the allegation of fraud. This is the front lines on the fight. Reporter on tuesday there will be a vote for the federal for the people act. Republicans are threatening to block that, yasmin. They say this is about election integrity. This i want to make sure our elections are fair and legitimate and thats why theyre passing these measures, not to make it harder to vote. Josh lederman. Tomorrow you have a bipartisan group of senators, who are set to release the smaller set of infrastructure proposals. And followed by Chuck Schumer saying lawmakers will in Fact Debate and vote for the for the people act on tuesday, despite republicans promising earlier this week that the legislation is dead on arrival. That was Mitch Mcconnell saying that. Were on Capitol Hill with more. Lay it out for us were likely to hear some details on this bill tomorrow, but can expect it to be presented to the White House as well. Do we know where biden stands on this latest deal . Reporter yasmin, the White House is projecting optimism, but well get more Details Tomorrow of what this latest bipartisan group of negotiators are going to come up with, and well hear biden weigh in from there. Right now the likeliest option seems to be on a twotrack playing field. On the one hand, they want to work out with shall bipartisan group of lawmakers, thats expected to be a roughly 1 trial won package with about 600 Million in new spending for hard infrastructure, things like transportation, that would go on that track. Separately democrats could move forward with a multitrillion dollar partisan package that could be up to potential 6 Trillion from one of the latest proposals from the democratic side. That would encompass more human elements, including climate Change And Child care. At this time well see the details from the bipartisan group, that group of 21 senators. There are right now about 11 senators that graeme, but not at democrats are yet on board. We heard from Bernie Sanders earlier today on Meet The Press saying he is not weighing in yet, but he did issue in red lines he is not willing to cross. One of the concerns i do have is how they are going to pay for their proposals, and theyre not clear yet. I dont know that they even know yet. Some is raising a gas tax, which i dont support, a phi on electric vehicles, privatization of infrastructure, those are proposals that i would not support so raising the gas tax, the White House completely nixed that, but well wait to see whether the latest proposal from the bipartisan group will get a Deal Or No deal from either sigh of pennsylvania avenue. While were putting infrastructure aside, i quickly want to touch on Voting Rights as well. Talked to me about the strategist with the democrats about bringing this to the chamber for a vote, when they know that this thing is dead on arrival. Reporter thats exactly right. Chuck schumer promised to bring the for the people act for a vote. Thats set to take place on tuesday, but the bill is essentially debt on arrival. There are not enough republican senators on board that would support that to get over the 60vote threshold. The reason theyre still proceed is a bit of virtue signaling. Its for snaps democrats to put their colleagues on the record. They could still squeak out a tactical victory by saying if they have reps united, but all the democrats united in support, thats still a kind of win for them. Joe manchin, who previously said he wouldnt support, has issued his own set of compromises around it, things that would bring him to get to yes, to start to debate on the Senate Floor around this legislation. That includes this compromises for him, including making Election Day a federal holidays, banning partisan gerrymandering, so a lot to play out here. As we said, its likely this is going to move forward, at least with this vote likely to fail on tuesday. Yasmin . I get it, it sends a message. We had a tropical Storm Claudette that swept the lower part of the state yesterday, and we believe this may have been related to hydroplaning. Multiple vehicles, one was a van with a Girls Ranch. There were nine people on board. The driver, the adult, she was pulled to safety by a bystander. The bystarter unfortunately was not ability to get to the children because of the flames. Eight young people, ranging in ages from 4 to 17, were killed in that vehicle. Two of them were children of the driver, and the others were, i believe, residents of the youth home, maybe a Nephew Or Niece of the driver as well. Were still confirming that. One of the other vehicles, like i said there were multiple vehicles, a Volunteer Firefighter from ten sees, and his 9monthold daughter were killed. As we understand it, they young people at the Girls Ranch youth were coming back from gulf shores. They had been at the beach, having a good time, and unfortunately this ended in tragedy. That is so incredibly awful on this Fathers Day weekend, any weekend, really. Jeremy, just quickly, have all the families been informed, alerted of the passing of these individuals at this point . Or are they still trying to identify folks . I believe they have all been identified. I believe the families have been notified. We havent been informed of all the names of the victims. Friends and family members gathered at a High School in the county to mourn the victims. We funds four of the victims attended realtown High School, and its been a real emotional scene there. The governor is more interested in his plan to build a Border Wall, but texans this week were more concerned with having to conserve electricity because the Grid Operator in texas told them to do so, because a number of Power Plants were unexpectedly offline this week at the same time as the state was experiencing record June Demand for electricity. The governor is interested in his political ambitions here. The Border Wall is a popular issue among conservative voters in texas, and the governor has a primary next year, where he could have more than one challenger from his right. Its a good question. The Border Wall is what the governor wants to talk about. He has had numerous appearances recently after the legislative session, really promoting the Border Wall. And, you know, it remains to be seen, he was short on details with this Border Wall. She was short on a real plan with substance. It was it seemed more political than anything, and folks on the ground on the border, you know, they would rather talk about local issues, community needs than these kind of political ambitions. So the governor essentially saying, look, democrats, bulk you were exposing taxpayers to higher costs for an additional legislative session, im going to keep you from getting paid, but then im going to shift 250 Million to building this Border Wall. The three issues are pandemic, Voting Rights and infrastructure, and together they will reveal the president s leadership skills, and about bipartisanship is possible or even advisable. Yesterday, about how the president persistently campaigns on this idea of reaching across the aisle and make sure they get legislation through, especially after a time that was so divisive. Obviously thats proven to not be successful as of yet. So the question now is, how long is the president going to stick with this bipartisanship, i should say, until he recognizes he needs to just get legislation through . Where is he with this . Reporter its a huge question of timing, yasmin, youre absolutely right, but the president is still the one holding out the most hope for a bipartisan path here when it comes to infrastructure, in particular on a couple other issues as well, but look at some of these deadline that the White House has set. Remember Memorial Day . Thats when he wanted to see progress on the infrastructure. The Oneyear Anniversary of the George Floyd death, they wanted Police Reform done. The White House is wearing thin on the patience signed of things. Thats why they are preparing for infrastructure jobs, to go to alone with the 6 trial wrong plan that the democrats are working on right now that includes more of the human infrastructure, but the President Tomorrow will be reviewing this proposal from the bipartisan group of senators, and that 1. 2 trillion framework the most traditional roads and bridges could be the way this president is ability able to tout he got something done. But the other big issue you mentioned in terms of the pandemic, look as hot close we are to the fourth of july, the goal the president had set for getting adults 70 of them with at least one shot, one vaccination. Its looking increasingly likely that hes not going to be able to hit that benchmark.
