Celebrations. When Republican Senator Ron Johnson of wisconsin showed up to a juneteenth celebration in milwaukee, he was not greeted by a welcoming committee. Ron johnson is the guy who went on record saying that he wasnt afraid of insurrectionists on January 6th because they were white, but he would have been afraid if they had been black. Johnson happens to be the guy who blocked the Juneteenth Legislation Last year before finally and reluctantly relenting last week in allowing the bill to move forward. So when that guy had the gull to show up at a juneteenth celebration yesterday, his constituents were not shy about letting him know how they felt. [ Crowd Booing ] heres some free advice for next time, maybe if youre on record diminishing, belittling and blocking recognition of a culturally significant holiday, dont show up at the party. Just do something else that day. In a moment im going to be joined by the head of the congressional black caucus, one of the lawmakers who was in the room for the historic signing of the juneteenth proclamation. Meanwhile, history of a more sinister sort is being made across the country in the form of the gops ongoing assault on voter rights and a partisan antidemocratic power grab, all steeped in the insurrectionist former president s big election lie. As The New York Times reports this morning, republican State Lawmakers have introduced at least 216 bills in 41 states to give legislators more power over election officials, with 24 of these laws being enacted into law across 14 states. And already gop lawmakers have stripped secretaries of state of sthr power, asserted more control over State Election boards, made it easier to overturn Election Results and pursued several partisan audits and inspections of 2020 results. In texas, state democrats used a dramatic walkout to block Republicans Assault on Voting Rights, but republican Governor Greg Abbott has followed through on a threat with what is essentially extortion of the legislative branch by withholding pay, including not just for legislators, but for legislative staffers, until the package of voting restrictions known as sb7 is passed. This we keep hearing from Voting Rights advocates is why its so important that federal legislation to protect the blot gets through congress and is signed into law as quickly as possible. Its the only way to stop all of these simultaneous State Assaults on Voting Rights that are taking place across the country. On tuesday, the majority leader, chuck schumer, is set to bring the for the people act to the floor. Its paired down from the original but incorporates proposals that the democratic senator Joe Manchin put forth this week. This compromise would make a number of changes, including making Election Day a public holiday, mandating at least 15 consecutive days of early voting for federal elections, banning partisan gerrymandering, Making Automatic Voter Registration through the state dmvs, and requiring voter i. D. With allowable alternatives, if you can have a different way of proving where you live. This voting Rights Bill will almost certainly fail to advance from the senate On Tuesday since it appears to have no support among republicans, let alone the ten votes needed to overcome filibuster. Joining me through is the democratic Congresswoman Joyce Beaty of ohio, chair of the congressional black caucus, member of the financial services committee. As i mentioned at the top of the show, she was in the room with Joe Biden for the historic juneteenth signing, and actually received one of the biden pens, which, congresswoman, is going to go down in history. That is a really, really important moment. But it is an important symbolic moment in american history at a time when there are very not symbolic things going on to limit those hardearned rights to vote. Absolutely. And first of all, thank you for having me on this morning. We are right here during the week of juneteenth, and youre absolutely right, to stand in the White House and have the president , along with so many of my colleagues of the congressional black caucus, and other members be there for the signing of something we fought so hard for, when you think about 1863 and 1865, and how far weve come. But we still have a lot of work to do as youre talking about with the Voting Rights and so many other things. But to be able to say that juneteenth is now a national holiday is not only symbolic, but when you think back of all of those individuals who fought so hard and who were yet enslaved and didnt have many of the opportunities we have today, but then think about it, were still Fighting For Voting Rights. So this is certainly a first step, but it is not the End Step because you have to look at if you cannot acknowledge the past, how can we move forward in the future . Martin from texas was on my Show Yesterday and he made the point of the 14 republicans who didnt vote for the passing of this bill, Everybody Else did in the House And Senate, and he says, look, the logical extension is that if you voted to acknowledge that slavery ended, and there was a bit of delay and letting some of the enslaved people know that, but if you voted to acknowledge that then you are acknowledging that they deserve the right to vote, that there should be no impediment. Every american should equally deserve the right to vote as guaranteed to them by the constitution which has been reinterpreted over the years to mean absolutely every citizen. In some ways, the symbolism of it should lead to a more rational approach to dealing with these State Prohibitions and restrictions on voting. I think youre absolutely right and i agree with roland martin. I think you hit the key. If you look at rational people, we should have had it unanimous just as the senate did. But i do think thats a good start of an argument for us, when you think about i look at it as the Glass Half full, that it was only 14 who did not vote for it. I think that gives us grounds as we go into bringing before the congress, the house and the Senate Legislation for Voting Rights. I think it puts us in a very good place. When you look at all the principles were Fighting For, when you look at history and what is due and what the american people overall want. So i think when we look at the people, theyre going to be on our side. Were Making Compromises already. We have solid legislation and we also believe well have the courts on our side. You spoke about history. In february you put Forth Legislation previously introduced by Marcia Fudge About Black History Being American history. This has become to me it would have been obvious and to a lot of americans thats obvious, to a lot of americans it is an absolute offense, this has been the basis of the fight against the 1619 project, the basis of the fight against critical Race Theory. In fact, it has been so much misunderstood by some of your colleagues in the House And Senate going around saying they are teaching little white children to hate themselves. There is no critical Race Theory being taught to little children at all. But tell me about the importance of this legislation and why we need to fundamentally understand that there is a complete history of america, not just the history that many students learned. I think you hit it on the nail. It is so important for us to make sure that people understand that although we celebrated in february, we should be celebrating this the entire year, because it is history. It happens to be Black Americans in american history. Its no different than anything else we study. So i think its important for us to bring it to the attention, because so many people think of it as being isolated. Children need to know about american history and how important it was for Black Americans. As is look at the picture of our capitol, its important for people to know that the capitol, the White House was built by slaves, its important to know when we think about all of the great health care, all the scientific things that we have, that Black Americans played a huge role in everything that we do today, and i think it will give them what i call the rosa Parks Theory that people will understand that lone woman made a change that now we have things that are integrated. But for that black american, but for martin luther king, but for all of the scientists and educators who were Black Americans making american history. We dont separate it when we need something that a black american has been part of. Think about covid19 and think about dr. Corbitt, a young black female, who was a major part of coming up with the vaccination. We dont say thats a vaccination for black people. We all take it. And that is the value of the bill that i am so honored to introduce following congresswoman, now secretary, fudge. Congresswoman, good to talk to you. It is the first Opportunity Weve had to talk since the passing of your husband and i just want to note, your husband was part of black american history in this country. He was first elected to the Ohio Statehouse in 1979. That was not a common thing in ohio. That was not a common thing in america at the time. So our thoughts to your husband and other trailblazers like him, because black history is american history. Thank you. And today is for him. So i appreciate that more than you know. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty is the democrat from ohio and she is the chair of the congressional black caucus. Joining me now is Columnist And Associate editor for the Boston Globe, renee graham. Her most recent piece dives into the heart of the matter, Juneteenth Holiday is symbolic, do not confuse it with racial justice. Shes also written one called how White Supremacy Weaponizes ignorance. Im so interested in both of these topics. Because its juneteenth weekend, lets start with the first one. Symbolic is important and it is crucial that we recognize these things. But, in fact, we are celebrating juneteenth as a federal holiday in the very same week that there are multiple efforts across this country to take away some of the gains that black people have made since The End of slavery. Whats remarkable to me, ali, is the day after Joe Biden signs it into law, theres two headlines in the washington post. One is about the Signing And Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday and the other is Mitch Mcconnell simply saying im not doing anything to help Voting Rights. And thats kind of where we are. And so if youre looking at juneteenth in and of itself, yes, its symbolic and important and it should have happened a long time ago. But it doesnt change the fact that Black Americans are under attack in this country, that their rights are under attack. Thats whats important. So i dont want people to get distracted by this shiny, Spinning Holiday and losing the thread that theres some serious things we need to be dealing with. Whats interesting to me is they talked about miss Opal Lee and all the work she did to create a Juneteenth Holiday. Whats equally important is whether or not ms. Lee will be able to vote in her next election in texas because of whats going on with Voting Rights. You write in your other column, you wrote that with every reactionary bill against critical Race Theory, and im switching gears here because weve got these bills against Voting Rights, but weve also got numerous bills across america against critical Race Theory. With every reactionary bill, conservative lawmakers denounce the nations unvarnished history for the Curates Propaganda of white supremacy. Weaponized fear and good eveningance are pillars of white supremacy. Thats why a majority of republicans still embrace the Big Lie about the 2020 election. And it is important to note history in this particular instance, because there was a history about the Civil War, there was a romanticized history about the defeat of the south which took root at the very moment that Southern White americans should have been thinking about the fact that, hey, we were on the wrong side of this, weve got a chance to rebuild a more just society. We started a narrative about how a remarkable culture of white Supremacy And Slavery was wiped out by the north. Right, this is where if you look back to what happened after the Civil War, this is when treason becomes valor, when 250 years of Human Bondage becomes an Aberration And History becomes no match for myths. We talk about the Big Lie and what happened with the election and the lies that were spread, the lies go back in this country. There are several Big Lies. The lies begin with the fact that indigenous people are supposedly savages, the lies begin with you have to do this to black people because theyre subhuman and this is the only way to control them. The lies have continued through the countrys history. So you have the Civil War and this whole idea of the lost cause. You had jefferson davis, the president of the confederacy, saying at a historical Society Speech that they had been cheated and not conquered, and that gave breath to the lie that the south was cheated and it opens up the door for what comes after that. The expression is history belongs to the victims. The southerners were not the victims. They lost that war. But somehow theyve managed to control that narrative for 150 years and that has a lot to do with how we suddenly and now finally get this Juneteenth Holiday when that should have been celebrated the same way we celebrate the 4th of july. It is interesting, because the historian Timothy Snider said after the first world war, the germans too felt that they were cheated and that led to them being defeated in a second world war. When you have been defeated for being on the wrong side of history, it is wrong to acknowledge it, figure out what you did wrong and dont make that mistake again. It is not Something America has fully recognized yet. Renee graham is a Boston Globe Columnist And Associate editor. Will reach president Bidens Independence Day Vaccination Goal. As things stand, it looks like the u. S. Will fall short of the goal of administering at least one covid19 shot to 70 of all adults by July 4th. As of this weekend, according to cdc statistics, about 65 of adults are at least partially vaccinated. So if youre interested in making this goal, youve got a week to go. President Joe Biden is touting the fact that his administration has been able to administer 300 Million covid19 shots during his first 150 days in office. The White House also turning its attention to the recent spread of the highly contagious Delta Variant among the unvaccinated. Biden described the new strain as, quote, more easily transmissible, potentially deadlier and particularly dangerous for young people. The u. S. Has announced plans to invest 3. 2 billion to develop antivirals to treat covid19 and other similar viruses that could lead to future pandemics. The new program will work to produce pills to fight contagious viruses early in the course of infection, potentially saving many lives in the years to come. Joining me to discuss these developments is dr. Francis collins, the director of the national institutes of health, and has been a great friend to our show and all americans since the beginning of this virus. Dr. Collins, it is a pleasure to see you again. Lets please talk about the Delta Virus. First of all, i missed the day when we stopped calling them various things and went to the greek alphabet. We have this Delta Virus and people ive talked to have said its a little more worrisome. Its been defined by the cdc as a variant of concern. Tell me what we need to know about this, please, sir. Well, youre right, the terminology has gotten people a little confused. We used to call this b 1617. 2, but that was unwieldy. Now its just called delta. This is the virus that ran through the country of india with terrible consequences in terms of high Death Rates and high transmissibility. It has moved out of india into other parts of the world. The uk is overrun with this variant, its the main one you see. Here in the u. S. Its coming up quickly. Its about 10 of the the isolate and people are predicting based on the shape of the curve that by august this will be the dominant strain. And it is worrisome because it is about 60 more transmissible than the previous record holder, the alpha variant. And it also, according to a scottish study that just came out a few days ago, seems about twice as likely to put you in the hospital if you get this one. And that includes young people. So thats all the bad news. The good news, ali, is that the current vaccines, the pfizer, moderna, the two shots, give very good protection, probably 88 protection against getting sick from delta. So thats good. That just means one more reason to get those shots. And by the way, if you only got one of those and you thought, well, thats good enough, not against delta. The protection after one shot is only about 33 , so get that second shot if for some reason you have put it off. Listen, america, we have a chance here not to have another big Surge And Delta is the threat for that. There are communities that dont have high enough vaccination rates to avoid an outbreak. If we could really push hard in the next week or so to try to get those rates up as high as they can, and theres no reason you cant find a place near you thats ready to help you out. Roll up your sleeve. Its time. Im seeing things i live in new York City and i see things get your vaccine now, weve got availability. So this is the moment to get it. You wrote a great blog the other day about how a nasal spray of Designer Antibodies could help beat covid19. One of the issues that we are dealing with is sometimes when you get the infection, so obviously were trying to prevent the infection from spreading, but if you get the infection, sometimes your body doesnt mount the response to it immediately. So there has been talk of a nasal spray and theres been talk from dr. Fauci about a pill. Does the Spray And Pill exist now, and if not, when will they and what will they do . Well, theyre in an experimental phase, running clinical trials. There are Monoclonal Antibodies which do work. If youre in a high Risk Category and you just got diagnosed with covid19, ask about getting a monoclonal Antibody Infusion that may keep you from getting really sick and ending up in the hospital. The nasal Spray Version is appealing because it doesnt require an intravenous infusion, and the pills, the next thing we want to push hard on, and you mentioned in the opening the announcement this week that the White House is putting 3 Billion into a major effort to develop these highly effective and safe oral agents, pills, that you can take immediately after getting a positive test that would basically knock that virus out. This is a hard problem. This takes all of the skills of the public and the private sector working together. But there are already three of these agents now in clinical trials and were hopeful that one or more of them will work. Its kind of like what we had to do for hiv 25 years ago, to come up with a way to identify the Achilles Heel for this virus, and then designing a drug that will go right there, knock out the virus, but not hurt you. You mentioned Monoclonal Antibodies. My understanding of that, and as you know from talking to me for a year is rudimentary, it comes from blood of people who have been infected and is a plasma thing. If you were to get a monoclonal antibody transfusion, you would go somewhere and they would give you some kind of Blood Or Plasma . Its a purified antibody. Basically you start with someone who has recovered from covid19, you figure out how they did that by making their own antibodies and then you purify that specific antibody. Its not plasma, but it is an infusion that has to be given intravenously. Its very effective in that high risk individual, as long as you get it early. It doesnt work once youre in the hospital. Youve got to do this right away. Dr. Collins, it is always a pleasure to talk to you. Thank you for joining us. The director of the national institute of health. With americas first official juneteenth in the books, i think its worth remembering where we were this weekend last year. In the runup to the 2020 election, Donald Trump and his administration cronies thought it would be a great idea to plan a Campaign Rally on juneteenth in tulsa, oklahoma, of all places. What better Day And Location to gather the Mag Amasses To Revel in maskless shenanigans during a pandemic, than the site of a brutal Race Massacre on the day Black Americans commemorate The End of slavery. Countless africanamerican members pleaded with him to change the date. They said it was racially insensitive, especially in the wake of the George Floyd protests that were raging across the country. Trump ultimately relented and agreed to push the rally to the next day, june 20th, which were the pictures you just saw. But in true trump fashion, he tried to take credit for something he didnt do. He told reporters at the time, quote, i did something very good, i made juneteenth very famous. Its actually an important event, an important time, but nobody had ever heard of it. Trump made juneteenth famous, not the thousands of black scholars who have been teaching about this day and its meaning for more than a century. It was him, the man who referred to black and brown nations as shole countries and constantly argued against taking down confederate statues, which are physical representations of slavery times. Weve come a long way from those trump days, but some things remain exactly the same. Now theres a Survival Guide for that. Actor, comedian, Activist And Author d. L. Hughley has written one and it is in stores now. He joins me next to discuss how to survive america. More velshi in a moment. Ugh, these balls are moist. Racism is americas chronic illness and white supremacy, not black inferiority, is the cause. Joining me is my old friend, d. L. Hughley, actor, activist and the original king of comedy. It is great to see you. Last time you and i talked you had covid and you have recovered beautifully from it. Well, you know, juneteenth, for a lot of people its a federal holiday. For me, i was on any ass in nashville. Its the day i passed out. It feels like a long time ago, but so much has happened from that time until now. Yes, a lot has. I want to get to a few specific things you note in your book. One of the things you talk about, the threat of police in the book because thats one of the big things thats happened in the year since weve talked. You also talk about the threat of the socalled people have come to understand in the last year, entitled White Women who use their privilege, entitlement, or even the police, frankly against people of color, you write the karens are there to tell us where we can and cant be, that what were up to is suspect, and let us know the consequences if we dont listen to them. They come at us maskless Spitting Hate and calling us the n word. The consequences arent always as dire, but thats the history, White Women accusing us of something we didnt do and paying with our lives, end quote. Privilege, it seems, unchecked can be deadly. Sure, you know, look at what happened at Central Park between the young brother, christian Cooper And Amy cooper. She purposely tried to weaponize her whiteness and say, you know what, if you dont do what i want, im going to call the police, thereby putting you in danger. Its the way its always been. And to pretend like it isnt that way me pretending as if there hasnt been progress made would be disingenuous, but we havent gotten so far that we arent aware of the stigma and using it as a weapon against us when theyre displeased with something we do. I want to talk about covid because you recovered from it. You do touch on it in the book, the disproportionate act on poor communities. You write i firmly believe the reason this disease has gotten out of control is because the majority of people dying early on were old, black, brown and poor. And we got a lot of them. Apparently they are expendable. Its an interesting point you make, if all of society were equally getting sick and dying at the rate that black, brown and poor people did in the early days of covid, maybe we would have done things differently. Look at who was dying, people in close proximity to each other and people who had to go out to work to expose themselves. It was poor, black, brown. It happened in prisons, in multigenerational homes, in old folks homes. The warehouse, oftentimes serviced by people who dont have that much care for them, and there is a Attend Aens for society to kind of write them off. If youre in prison, people have more or less forgotten about you, if you live in the projects and urban parts of the area, people have forgotten about you. If you live in an old folks home, people have kind of forgotten about you. And even some of the statements by the president was that this is happening in Blue States or happening in these places, happening here. So there was a tendency in america to believe that that was happening to us wasnt striking our national treasure, it was striking at the thing we have an abundance of, poor, black, brown and old people. D. L. , lets talk about vaccine hesitancy. I want to put up a chart of fully vaccinated americans and you can see that asians are very low in the group, blacks are also very low, latinos are higher, white people are almost at 62 . You have a sense that that makes sense to you, given what youve express in the book, why black people continue to have the level of hesitancy they have. Look at the history of corporations and governments and sterilization, just as recently as 2017 there were latin women on the border who were getting sterilized because there was a woman who got sterilized because somebody told her it would be treatment for medical problems she was having. They took her blood, all these medical treatments, and never gave her the credit for it. So i think that when it happens, i think the governor of michigan came out and commissioned a study upon why it was disproportionately affecting Black And Brown People, and everybody knows why. This is history repeating itself. Its the same thing that happened with the spanish flu. Black and brown people, although there were fewer of them, were dying at disproportionate rates and society invariably blamed them for that. Adams got on tv and said we were smoking and eating poor. We have asthma at disproportionate rates because our communities are the dirtiest. Its 17 miles for access to fresh food. We have poor medical treatment. Its natural, wherever this virus we often have a tendency to be in the Service Business where you have to go somewhere. They were rife for this virus and this virus was able to be so successful because this disease preyed on the poor and weak and the insensitive fueled that. They decided, even right now, you have people who have decided its not real. Remember when, as a matter of fact, Donald Trump had a black woman get on tv and say she had a cure for covid. She also said that black women get fibroids because of having sex, and scientifically, we know its because of the chemicals they were putting in their hair. So if its a demon, its called dark and lovely. So even the president of the united states had an idea that bleach could help you and black people are rife for misinformation. We didnt trust him, we didnt trust what the medical professionals were saying, and we didnt trust his remedies. So now you have less than 10 of Black And Brown People are taken it, because it isnt like this country has exhibited a great deal of concern. Last time we were invited for medical treatment, it started in tuskegee, so youre right. D. L. , i love seeing you. I miss you. A lot of folks dont know that for a little bit of time we had our offices next to each other and we used to sit and have some fun conversations, just sitting and talking about the world. May that happen again, my friend. D. L. Hughley, actor, Comedian And Author of the new book how to survive america. Its on sale now. Thanks for joining us.
