And a tragic turn of events. One person is dead, another hurt after a truck rammed into a crowd at a Pride Parade in south florida. And it all happened just feet from Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman schultz. New developments in one of the highprofile cases of the Capitol Riot involves this man that you see on the left there In The Red And Black jacket. Shown in newly released body camera video. Assaulting a d. C. Officer with a flagpole. What we can expect in court this week. And from california to the great plains, an extreme Heat Wave is breaking records and intensifying drought. As we say good morning to everybody on this sunday. It is june 20th, good to see you cory. And kendis gibson. Im Cory Coffin in for lindsey. Razor and a happy Fathers Day. Thanks for joining us this morning. We are live at Msnbc Headquarters in New York. Take a shot from our headquarters, by the way. It is bright and early. This is one of the earliest sunrises that we will have in many parts of the country, or the world, for that matter. 5 24 was the sunrise this morning in New York. Five or seven in boston. That perfectly, right off of i forget the name of that building. Right now, its really. Early yeah, its a skyscraper. [laughs] take that as the officially. My goodness. The empire state building, i swear. All right, we have a team of reporters and analysts following the latest for you. Right now lets Dive Right in. We want to begin with a live look at Capitol Hill where two of democrats miller Jerk Policy objectives will be put to the test this week. Tomorrow, a group of bipartisan senators are expected to release details on their infrastructure proposal. And On Tuesday, the Majority Leader Chuck schumer will bring the bill on Election And Voting Rights Reform to the Senate Floor. And this Nbcs Amanda Goldman is onset Capitol Hill. Nbc News Right House Reporter Courtenay in wilmington, delaware. Where the president is spending the weekend. And had some bad news as well about his dog this. We but lauren, well start with you. And the president waiting to see this new infrastructure proposal. He mentioned while he was traveling overseas that he didnt know the exact details. Hes back here now. Do we have a preview of whats in it . Do w yeah, thats right. We expect to hear from this bipartisan group of senators on monday about the details of this plan. President biden, on friday, as he was getting ready to leave washington to come here to wilmington, told reporters that he would have more to say on this on monday. Was he himself actually got a copy of this plan. So, all of that is to say, that the situation remains incredibly fluid. And nothing is set in stone until the president actually has a chance to Take A Look at this and dive into some of the details here. The White House, on friday, did issue some fresh warnings about the Gas Tax, reminding people that the president is opposed to any increase in the Gas Tax. He views that as a break on his promise not to increase taxes on anyone making under 400,000 a year. Now that response from the White House came after one of the republican senators involved in this bipartisan group had suggested publicly that a Gas Tax would still on the table. Really just underscoring that there continues to be some divisions, particularly when it comes to how to pay for this, despite signs of progress and some hope that a deal could be nearing. Keep in mind that the president has said, for weeks now, that he is supportive of a two Track Approach to this if it has to come to that. Which just means that he wants to get as much as he possibly can into this bipartisan package. Whatever he cant get republicans to agree to, he supports putting into a democratic plan only. Okay, amanda, lets turn to you. Now with the other major news that were following on the infrastructure package. The voting Rights Bill doesnt have much of a chance of going anywhere. Wait infrastructure has somewhere to go . [laughs] im sensing a Running Theme here. I know your Making Fun of Capitol Hill. But this is the reality. Here is looking very bleak for this upcoming vote On Tuesday for the for the people act. That simply because there is not enough republican support to override the upcoming Potential Filibuster that we would see take place, because there simply is not enough republican support. This all comes as senator senate Majority Leader Chuck schumer had promised to bring this bill to a vote on the 22nd. And thats still going to fill. But we expect them to this really does signify democratic messaging. Here is still shows where democrats see their own priorities. And they can still squeak out a tactical victory. Meaning they can have the upper hand if all democrats are new united when it comes to supporting this. And all republicans are united in their opposition. Thats simply because there is not enough support to override this upcoming override the upcoming filibuster. But there are democrats that are fully on board and thats because Senate Senator Joe manchin, who had previously said he was opposed has now issued his own compromises to where he could come to guess, to bring this bill to the Senate Floor for debate. And that includes making Election Day a federal holiday, banning partisan gerrymandering, as well as issuing voter i. D. These are some provisions that would allow him to support the for the people act. Previously had instead supported the Voting Rights act, name for the late john lewis. Because that did have bipartisan support. That still a Sticking Point for mentioned. He doesnt want democrats to go it alone. But the political reality is republican see a fundamental difference in the role of the federal government when it comes to dictate in states rights to issue their own election rules. The political reality playing out is getting pretty stark reactions. Heres what congressman Jim Clyburn had to say about where this moves forward. Clyb Voting Rights, like all other constitutional rights, ought not to be subjected to filibusters. This reduces from 60 to 55, that dont get it for me. One gets it for me is to remove the filibuster from constitutional issues, as weve done for the budget. As Carson Grossman Clyburn there details, renewing political pressure on the filibuster. That 60 vote threshold. Because this legislation being so vital in the view of democrats, there still arent those at least ten republican senators to support. But keep in mind, when it comes to reforming the filibuster, whether its making changes or abolishing it completely, not all democrats are on board, including senator joe manchin. So thats not looking like a lightly option. Especially as this inches swords of On Tuesday. Candice inquiry . Amanda golden there and Lauren Egan starting us off. Thank you both. Really appreciated. Lets dig deeper right now on all of this with democratic congressman of New York. Cosponsor, by the way, of the voting Rights Bill. The for the people act. Congressman, thank you for being here with us on this Fathers Day. Whats the purpose of bringing the voting Rights Bill to the floor when there is zero shot that it will override the filibuster right now . While america knows where everybody stands on such an important piece of legislation that will guarantee we move forward to filibuster the Voting Rights that, will be to use this tool that very much connected historically to Jim Crow era. To stifle and really strangle the rights of people at the voting booth. America must know what each and every One Of Us stands on this fundamental issue to democracy. Congressman, theres new reporting on just how far republicans are willing to go to fight Voting Rights. The New York times writes quote, across georgia, members of at least ten County Elections Boards have been removed, had their positions eliminated, or are likely to be kicked off through local ordinances are new laws passed by the state legislature. At least five of the people color, most are democrats, though some are republicans. And all are likely to be replaced by republicans. So, do you see these developments that are slowly coming out here through this indepth reporting possibly placing any additional pressure on leaders that maybe previously been hesitant to support getting on board with that . Getting rid of the filibuster like Senators Manchin and senator cinema. I hope so, when folks the dnc to what extent republicans across the six are willing to go to make a difficult for people to access the ballot, as people begin to see that in their constituencies. I said im hopeful that people like Manchin And Sinema will change their minds. Using the filibuster for such a fundamental important piece of democracy should not be legal. So, yes, i hope it changes their minds. Lets talk about infrastructure for a little bit. Because i was a little bit negative nelly earlier when cory was talking about it. She was trying to put it in a positive light. There is a apparently a slimmer, or a glimmer of hope when it comes to infrastructure. Do you get a sense of seeing a bipartisan deals finally struck within the next week or two . I do. I feel that infrastructure is so important to get america working again. But also to give america a major facelift. I think we all can agree that as you go throughout the states of the union, yeah we all can agree. But do you feel as if what you know do you feel as if there is something that is being worked out behind the scenes that makes you confident that it will happen . I think roy will propel the senators to do this is that whether you are in a Red State or a blue state, you need infrastructure. Your constituency needs infrastructure. And as we get on this pandemic, people are realizing that they are now back at work. When people see that in fact, a kind of help that we will providing four months is no longer there, theres going to be an urgent need to get a job. To have the ability to get a job. And i think thats the Infrastructure Bill. Most of the Infrastructure Bill can bring about great climate solutions. We see that Heat Wave sweeping the country right now. And people i think people are keen as to whats happening to the environment. I was just trying to find out whether or not i cant give you any insight on what this discussion among the senators. But i know they must feel. Because its very often why feel about my own district. And that is that people will need jobs and the Infrastructure Bill is important. People are going through a Heat Wave in arizona may feel that in fact, this is a good thing for the environment. Congressman, let us ask you about this in the last few seconds that we have here. What about the Budget Reconciliation Proposal . This is being championed by bernie sanders. Its a six trillion Dollar Budget here. Do you support . It yes, i do. I think that the Budget Reconciliation Effort is a good one. We wont be able in many cases to count on ten republicans. They are intransigent. I think that we must move america forward. President biden must be given the ability to govern for all americans and provide relief after this unprecedented pandemic. Hopefully we can see some progress here in the next coming weeks on if actual progress can be made. With that bill or with the budget or, with the Voting Rights acts. Congressman, we appreciate you being here. Thank you, happy Fathers Day. A, happy Fathers Day to you as well. We want to follow some Breaking News out of florida. A Pick Up Truck lined up the Stone Will Pry pilloried ran over to people killing them. One of them on saturday evening. The other person is hurt. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was also sitting in a convertible nearby that vehicle and the vehicle nearly narrowly missed her car that she was sitting. And nbcs msnbcs is in south florida. Gary, the Mayor Fort Lauderdale came out with a strange statement about all of this after it happened. What are we learning more about this . Happened. The morning, kendis. This had all the trappings of a fun and festive atmosphere to quickly turned tragic around 7 00, when a man driving a truck drove into a crowd here at the gay Pride Parade. I want you see behind me, some of the debris and where the car drove in to the garden center. But heres what we know at this hour. Two Adult Males were injured here on the scene. They were both taken to broward health medical center. One later died. The other is still there at the hospital. He is expected to survive. Now they police did apprehend the driver of the vehicle, very quickly. After the incident occurred. He police have yet to say the whether or not this was an intentional or accidental act. They have yet to figure that out. They are still investigating. They say its an active investigation. And they say the fbi is also helping them with this. I do want to read to one Eye Witness Account that was provided to the paper here. The sunsentinel. It says we were at the start of the parade waiting for the high school. All of a sudden there was a loud revving of a truck and a crash through a fence. Now, kendis, you can imagine what that horror must have been like. Nobody imagines that would happen to them. Especially in the middle of the gay Pride Parade. There was a Politicians Reaction as you mention, pouring in. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz was on the ground here. She was participating in the festival and the parade. She was just nearby, feet away when this happened. She has released a statement as well. I want to. She says, i am heartbroken by what took place at the celebration. She is deeply shocked and shaken and devastated. And may the memory of the Life Loss be able icing. Also says hes devastated and morning for the life taken. And hes grateful for police action. Where we are is a little Bit North of Fort Lauderdale. Its a very large lgbt community. A lot of the restaurants and bars on the Main Street are owned by members of the game community. This parade is a celebration that happens every year during pride month. About 35,000 people usually come out with. Theres thousands of people out here yesterday. And the theme of yesterdays events was out of darkness, into light. But this morning certainly some darkness has happened. One has died, and another injured because of this incident. Yet, is one of the more Famous Gay Communities in south florida. Ive been there many times. That parade is something that people really, really look forward to. Should we glean anything at this point from the fbi being involved in this investigation . I do want to know that the Fort Lauderdale police is actually the Lead Agency in charge right now. The fbi is not leading. Thats something i think we can glean. You joliette has something thats more serious, we know immediately whats happening. The fbi will take charge. The Fort Lauderdale police is the leading agency in charge at the moment. All right, gary really appreciate the reporting. Locked and loaded, some new details on the man who brought weapons to the front lines of the Capitol Riot. Thomas webster is a former marine. He was seen in a new Department Of Justice video, attacking an officer with a poll. We could also see our first sentencing in a separate case. Msnbc washington to reporters gotten four olympics of near. The korean kendis, good morning. Lets begin with new developments of one of a higher Profile Capital Insurrection cases. Thomas webster, the say hes the man shown in his newly released body camera video, assaulting a d. C. Police officer. First, with a flagpole, then with his fists. Webster is a former new York Police officer, and a former marine. A court has just ordered the prosecutors to make an argument next week, whether they want to hold webster in jail until trial. He has been in jail for weeks, ever since his arrest. He wants to get out. We will see if prosecutors want to hold him into they suspect he will try, the hearing is late in the week, this coming week. Also, development in the case of directed. He is from texas. The guys say he is a 3 , or scene outside the capitol that day wearing some military gear and i am. In new filings late yesterday, prosecutors say that he had a Gun Holstered on his hip as he faced off with police that they, making him the third person specifically accused of carrying a firearm amid the mob. That allegation alone runs counter to the state makes it seemed like an armed insurrection to some politicians. Also in the coming week, we expect our first sentencing in the january six case, a lower level case. A florida woman, not accused of any assault, of any damage at the capitol. Prosecutors say they are expecting to request that you serve three years probation, and restrictions. She is seeking 40 days communities service. We will see where the judge goes, if and when she pleads guilty. This likely will happen wednesday or thursday. Kendis and cori, back to you. Scott mcfarland, thank you for that reporting. Back to New York. Even by new York City standards, this has been one of the wildest and most colorful mayoral races. Only a couple of days to go before the primaries On Tuesday, and this terrible Shooting Right here has now taken center stage. Watch as it plays out. Those folks on the ground, a fiveyearold and tenyearold sister over there. Boy and girl. In the bronx, caught in the middle as a gunman fired repeatedly at this target. The kids were not injured. The Shooting Victim by the way is expected to survive. Mayoral candidate Eric Adams who is one of the leaders in the polls, offering some 2,000 of his own money to try to find the gunman. Police, releasing a picture of the suspect this morning. You can see him there. The incident underscores a surge in crime now plaguing new York City and other places across the country. Its bringing sally golden bergh, a City Hall Bureau chief at politico, New York, for all of this. Sally, thank you for being here. You see that shooting . How it plays out . How is expected, with only a couple of days to go, going to reshape this race . Crime has been an issue, but you have had many candidates who have been saying, defund the police. Some candidates actually have Police Backgrounds . Yes, thank you for having me. And, i think that really disturbing Video Footage Kind of tells you in a nutshell, why the Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is leading in pretty much every poll, lately in the mayors race, ahead of the primary On Tuesday. He is, was a police officer. He retired after 22 years in the nypd as a captain. And he has made restoring public safety, you know, the centerpiece of his campaign. I think there are other candidates, wiley in particular, who is talking if not the word defund the police, kind of the spirit of taking resources away from the nypd, and bolstering social services instead. That just does not seem to be where the majority of voters are based on public polling to date. Yes. Currently, for so many months now we have been following Andrew Yang, his rise in the polls over here in New York. Now the latest polling is showing he has significantly dropped. The rivalry between adams and, you mentioned, the democrat, maya wylie, is arguably the most notable in the race, hes virtually due to their contrasting tackles and approach to gun crimes. As mentioned, adams wants to create a specialized unit for gun violence, and resigned detectives into areas where violence is on the rise. Wiley wants to relocate a large sum of the Police Budget to social services. How are voters reacting to all of this . I see mentioned, Maya Wiley used to be a contributor to msnbc. Yes, you know, i think Andrew Yang was sort of the favorite for a few months, when the race seemed to be focused in part on the citys economic recovery from covid. Of course, but is still a major issue. Voters care about that, but it seems like crime has kind of taken center stage. And a lot of what Andrew Yang was saying about the City Reopening has happened, so the urgency, the emotion around it is a little dissipated from a few months ago when he was leading. As for the Policy Divide that is displayed between Maya Wiley and Eric Adams, we will see how it plays out On Tuesday when we see the numbers. But i think that there is certainly a movement, and the voters behind who want a less aggressive nypd. I expect they will be with Maya Wiley. But it seems that there is more energy amongst democrats, for what Eric Adams is saying, as crime is on the rise, and shootings in particular, i should make that divide, shooting are on the rise. Sally, i have to be quick here. Yes, it is a larger city here in the country, and a lot of times it leads to the world, decisions that are made. But if i am sitting at home, in boise, why do you think we should be paying attention to what happens On Tuesday, here in New York . Well, i think for a few reasons. You know, New York first of, all it is a tourist destination. So i think that people from all over the country, all over the world want to come to New York. And as the pandemic restrictions lift, people it will look to travel. New york is a natural place. So, there is that. Also, New York kind of sets the path in terms of policy. Mayor bloomberg put a Smoking Ban in place some 20 years ago. Other cities followed. It is also, the last three mayors ran for president. De blasio, bloomberg and giuliani, all at some Point Ran for the White House. So there is a sort of natural interest, natural interest in politics from the mayors office. Okay, it will be interesting to see how it does play out. It is expected that whoever wins the tuesday primary will end up taking to City Hall come next january. Sally golden berry from political, New York. Thank you. Coming, up tornadoes, storms and a crippling Heat Wave. Temperatures soaring up to 30 degrees above average. But its also happening in colorado, which is had multiple days of 100degree heat. A montana, places where you dont expect it to be this hot, this early. Thats what Plaintiffs Client scientists are so worried about, as well. The fact that is happening so early. Leads them to believe Climate Change is playing a rare major role here. Its a least a few degrees hotter, year, by year, by year. Which doesnt sound like a lot. But it has added up into the super heating of it. Which is also fueling the mega drought that were in right now. Which is causing so many problems, not only for farmers who produce most of the vegetables and fruits all of the country. From this area in california. But also, for the electrical grid. So much is reliant upon hydro electric power, because theres less water, there is less fuel for those processing plants to be able to push out to the rest of the communities in california. But also, just the fact that it is so hot and so many people are using their air conditioning. So, that has led to in texas, specifically here in california, whats called flex alerts. In other words, Government Officials telling people to try to limit their Power Consumption in those peak hours from five to 10 pm. Because everybody comes home from school and work, they turn on the air conditioning. And then theres a possibility that the grid is overloaded which could lead to power outages. Which could lead to rolling blackouts. Which is very, very dangerous. When were about to head into what could be another historic wildfire season. Already, were seeing more fires this year, this early, then in some cases and in some regions, than weve ever seen before. All of it added adding up to a pretty catastrophic problem for the entirety of the west coast. There is some good news that meteorologists predict this to break at some point early on next week. But again, when you add in the fact that it is so early in the season, theres some so so my where to go. This is only a problem thats only going to get worse. Back to you guys. No doubt it will. [laughs] were all in shock is really what it is. Also, today, royal Caribbeans Freedom of the seas will set sail on a cdc mandated tested voyage. It is the first trip in 15 months. This is ahead of a busy Summer Season for the company. And this comes just days after another Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship was delayed due to covid cases among the crew. Meanwhile, a federal judge has ruled that the cdc cannot enforce covidrelated rules on Cruise Ships. Leaving from florida. To help us unpack all of the Health Implications of all of this were going to bring in doctor blackstock. Doctor blackstock, welcome back. Were so happy to have you this morning. Lets Dive Right in, the judge called the cdcs guidelines for these Cruise Ships and overreach of power. But we have already seen some positive cases. And this is just early on in the process. So, are you concerned about this . Are you concerned about safety moving forward knowing this . Absolutely. First, thank you for having me on. Im concerned that Cruise Lines are going to become the covid hotspots. We know that Cruise Lines are essentially congregant settings. There are different areas where people are tightly situated there, unable to physically distance, and the cdc is essentially putting in place guidelines to keep people safe. First of all, what are one of their guidelines is that people who are not fully vaccinated should not be traveling. But theyre also guidelines around masking, physical distancing, as well as testing. So, if cruises leaving from florida know have to follow these guidelines, we are definitely going to see an increase in cases on crew ships. Would you recommend somebody take a cruise right now, given these things . No, i would say if you are not fully vaccinated so if you are not vaccinated, or you are partially vaccinated, i would advise against going on a cruise line. Again, you cannot physically distance adequately on a cruise. Life and there are people coming from multiple destinations. Multiple international destinations on these cruises. Which again, increases the risk for covid. You mentioned vaccinations. Lets talk about that. The biden administration is unlikely to me is July 4th goal of getting 70 of americans vaccinated. Some experts think we might not actually hit that threshold until late july, or even august. What does that delay mean in terms of Fighting Covid overall . And defeating this thing . Right, so i would say that we should focus less on the number and focus more on just increasing vaccinations. I think that we are in, obviously a greater position that we were earlier on in the pandemic. We are seeing hospitals, patients, cases and deaths, at their lowest point ever. However, i think that the biden administration has it right in terms of focusing on knocking down those barriers to access. Offering paid leave, offering childcare, transportation, increased hours at vaccination sites. And the other issue theyre focusing on is this Hyper Local Approach to messaging. Which is key. There are many people that in that wait and see group that still have these false beliefs about vaccines. Or they dont have a full understanding about the safety around vaccines. All right, up next the women are a winning, but the men are the ones cashing in. In new York City, it sparked some tough questions about who should march in the Pride Parade, and who should not. We are going to speak with the leading voices of both sides of that debate ahead, in the next hour. Xt hour its Grilled Cheese time. Yeah, its time for Grilled Cheese. Yes, we play soccer. But we are so much more than that. We were ready to show the world real talent. Real energy. Real, competitive drive. But the stories the same everywhere, women get paid less to do the same job. All right, that was a clip from the new documentary, lfg, which follows the u. S. Womens Soccer Team and their fight for equal pay. With four World Cup titles, and four olympic gold medals, they are undeniably one of the most teams in sports, if they continue to be paid less than the Mens Team, which has failed, by the way to even qualify for its third straight olympics. Last year, a judge throughout the players claims that they were underpaid, but they have since appealed. Joining us right now is the Academy Award winning directors, Andrea And Sean fine. Their documentary appears On Hbo this thursday, one month before the women head off to tokyo to win it all again. Andrea and sean, thank you guys for being here, really appreciate it. Our pleasure. Glad to be with you. Lets get, because, the lfg, if im old enough to remember the group lfo, the best Boy Band ever, dont let anybody say the Backstreet Boys were it, but lfg, and it is a family show, what does that mean . It is a bit of a bold hour in the morning to say the real thing, but it is lets freaking go, but replace the freaking with a stronger statement, lets do that. It is really the teams rally cry, you know, they say it before they step on the field. It is how they kind of come together, it is their Warrior Mode and it seemed like the perfect embodiment for the title. It is an embodiment of the fight they are fighting right now, and have been for several years. What would you say inspired you guys to do this . Well, what inspired us to do this was, this is a fight that crosses many boundaries, goes beyond sports. We wanted to tell the inside story out of his point. We wanted to tell it from their point of view. We felt like they were not being allowed to tell it from their point of view, we wanted them to be able to show how hard they were fighting for equal pay, and what it took to fight this fight. You know what . That makes a lot of sense. Because, these headlines, how amazing these women are and just the rally that the whole world did behind them, there was not a lot of followup after that. I think people just assumed that equal pay will come because they were so successful. And it is surprising that it has not. I think people would also be surprised at how low the pay can be for some of these players, one of them needed a second job, even. Lets Take A Look at a clip here. Even though i am on the u. S. A team, i have to coach just to make ends meet. Childcare is more than my paycheck. The Mens Team gets more, marketed better, and they feel better. We were very frustrated, very angry. It is not fair. Is that something that you heard from other players as well . Yes, i mean, i think you do. You have heard that sort of storyline for a very long time, it to be a professional Womens Soccer player, you make a lot of sacrifices to stay in that sport. So when you get to the highest pinnacle of play, you expect to be compensated fairly. You know, one of the reviews says that it will make you mad as hell. I know that the review said that it is infuriating. It is important, and it is inspiring. Many documentaries, including many hbo documentaries have really resulted in change. The r. Kelly documentary, that resulted in change. So, do you get a sense that this, when someone watches this, that perhaps at this point, it will result in change . That is our goal. I mean, our company has been called change content, that is why we we make films, why we want to inspire people to create their own change. I do think that this film is already kicking the hornets nest. Not just with u. S. Soccer, but also with women around the world. When they see it, i think they will be inspired to go ask their employers for equal pay. Last question, really quick. Will you give us the latest on their fight . I know that the women have appeal to the judges decision. Correct. So, they will stick with this fight to the very end, it is what they are telling us, so it is in appeal, going forward is what their goal is. Of course, they could settle with u. S. Soccer at anytime. But right now, they will stick with it. Well, perhaps next month, they will allow the exclamation point, the drop the mic moment when they go to tokyo, and bring it all home. Thanks to Andrea And Sean, thank you. Fine work. Premieres this thursday On Hbo. It is the top of the hour. We begin a new hour right now on msnbc.
