While wearing a hoodie, with the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/chicago-police-department'>Chicago Police Department logo on it. A Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/maryland-woman'>Maryland Woman was charged with entering the capitol after her alleged accomplice, whose name is redacted, said in an Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/instagram-video'>Instagram Video in which the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/accuseds-face'>Accuseds Face appears, she stormed the capitol. She is the new congresswoman. She is the new speaker of the house. Also, today, a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/virginia-couple'>Virginia Couple became the first capitol defendants to plead guilty and get a deal that carries minimalifany jail time. Which prompts a question that will now face federal prosecutors and judges. Which is, what kinds of consequences will people face . How will the government distinguish, between people that were trespassing but were not violent . And those who were violent . Right . Also, how will the government get to the bottom of the coordination between the rioters. For instance, in these rightwing Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/militia-groups'>Militia Groups like the proud boys and the tHree percenters and the oath keepers, significant evidence in the court filings there was active Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/planning-and-coordination'>Planning And Coordination in the runup and the question is. Well, who did they actively plan with . And how . Even though, it seems like Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/law-enforcement'>Law Enforcement is, still, no closer to identifying the pipe bomber. Remember that person . It does seem fairly clear between the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/fbi-surveillance-footage'>Fbi Surveillance Footage and social media posts, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/day-by'>Day By day, they are found. New ones, every day, and there will be consequences for them. Some accountability. But the other half the equation, right, that hangs over the country is accountability for the political leaders that incited or abetted after the fact. The Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/slowmotion-insurrection'>Slowmotion Insurrection being carried out by republicans in suits and ties, who basically winked and nudged their bay before Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th. And now, attempted to overturn a democratic election afterwards. The majority of the house republican caucus, the majority, and these eight republican senators, including the likes of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/ted-cruz'>Ted Cruz and Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/josh-hawley'>Josh Hawley and rick scott, who now runs the republican senate campaign arm. Voted to overturn the election. And this Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/sedition-caucus'>Sedition Caucus faced some very serious blowback. There was widespread condemnation, across the political spectrum. But also, businesses and donors cut them off. At least, for a little while, right . A few months ago, we reported to you that tradeindustry groups were beginning to lay the groundwork to figure out a way to turn the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/money-spigot'>Money Spigot back on, and just pretend the whole thing never happened. And low and behold, today the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/daily-beast'>Daily Beast reported that boeing, which paused all political Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/done-doengzs'>Done Doengzs in the wake of the insurrection, itself, sort of strange. Has restarted its donations to tHree republicans who did, indeed, vote to overturn the election. That is, they voted to install the loser over the winner. To keep him in place running the country, against the will of the majority of the american people and that includes minority whip, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/steve-scalise'>Steve Scalise. Who refused to call Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/joe-biden'>Joe Biden the legitimate president. Joe biden won the election. He is the legitimate Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/president-of-the-united-states'>President Of The United States. The election was not stolen. Correct . Look. Joe bidens the president. There were a few states that did not follow their state laws. But, congressman, i know Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/joe-biden'>Joe Bidens the president. He lives at the white house. I asked you, is he the legitimate Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/president-of-the-united-states'>President Of The United States . And do you concede that this election was not stolen . Very simple question. Please, just answer it. Once once the once the electors are called, yes, he is the legitimate president. But if you are going to ignore the fact that there were states that did not follow their own Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/state-legislativelyset'>State Legislativelyset laws, that is the issue at heart that millions of people still are not happy with. Thats bogus, by the way. The whole thing that thats the issue people are unhappy with. They are unhappy because they have been told that, like, hugo Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/chavezs-ghost'>Chavezs Ghost hacked the machines. The report also disclosed 25,000 gifts the republican Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/attorney-generals'>Attorney Generals association. Whose fundraising arm, of course, helped promote the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january6th-rally'>January6th Rally to stop the steal. We reached out to boeing for comment, on this decision. Heres what they told us. Quote, we will continue to carefully evaluate our giving to ensure we support candidates who support our Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/business-and-policy'>Business And Policy priorities, as well as the interest of our customer, diverse workforce, and the communities where we live and work. Thats a sort of fascinating statement. Like, we think this is in our interest to support people that want to overturn election. We can infer boeing thinks its in the interest of the company to support politicians, who, themselves, do not support democratic elections. Free and fair elections. Thats the message. Boeing and others are sending. Its a pretty dangerous one, not to mention, i think, pretty stupid and short sighted. It gives Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/aid-and-comfort'>Aid And Comfort to the people who are working, right now, in every state in this union, to plan for the next insurrection. And not all of those plats involve storming the seat of government. We talked, of course, about the fraudulent audit in arizona, still going by the way. There are republicans from many states that have visited arizona and are plotting audits in their own states. Meanwhile, there are actual rightwing militants plotting more aggressive measures as well. Daily beast published this really eyeopening interview with a conservative sheriff in eastern Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/washington-state'>Washington State whos been outspoken in his condemnation of farright extremism. Which he sees around him. He says quote, what happened on Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th was the worst thing that i think i have ever seen happen in my nation because that tHreatened the entire stability of this nation. We will live tHrough about ten years of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/hard-times'>Hard Times because that cycle of these things and we are in the very beginning of this. To that point, the people who have faced the most severe consequences. Who have been the targets of harassment and tHreats. Are the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/election-officials'>Election Officials, who have done their job. Reuters had this great report that as recently as april, the wife of georgias republican secretary of state, who stood up to Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/donald-trump'>Donald Trump, received a text message reading, quote, you and your family will be killed very slowly. The associated press did some really good reporting showing that theres been a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/mass-exodus'>Mass Exodus of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/election-officials'>Election Officials who faced tHreats during the 2020 president ial election and by and large, these people were just anonymous, or heretofore, anonymous civil servants who we, all, depend on to smoothly run free and fair elections, kind of in the background, right . And they did their jobs. Bravely, correctly. And they faced holy terror for it and now a lot of them are leaving. So, the people who did their job and saved american democracy, faced this awful storm. The people who marched in the capitol are getting their accountability in dribs and drabs and arrests, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/day-by'>Day By day. Well, the people at the top who cultivated the insurrection, from Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/donald-trump'>Donald Trump down to the entire republican party, are doing their best to escape free. And the question from the media to courts to civil society is, are we going to let them . Michigan secretary of state, jocelyn benson, has been on the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/receiving-end'>Receiving End of tHreats just for doing her job. In december, dozens of stop the steal protestors outside her house. She joins me now. I, first, want to start on the aftereffects of the tHreats. I mean, this is not normal. Its not what elections officials usual face. This was totally anomalous, what happened to people like yourself. And then, people far below you, in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/org-chart'>Org Chart of running, say, the state of michigans elections. And its ongoing, as youve mentioned. In part, because theres not, yet, been any, real accountability for the political leaders who have been lying to folks and and selling, you know, a false bag of goods. Of of what was true about the election. It really was quite remarkable and we really cant forget that truth. In the midst of a pandemic, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/election-officials'>Election Officials oversaw a safe, secure, widely accessible election, where more people voted than ever before. Certainly, in michigan and other states. That is truly remarkable. And the fact that thats not being celebrated. That, instead, so many officials are still receiving tHreats to their lives, for simply doing their jobs and standing on the front lines to protect the will of the people, against an unprecedented misinformation campaign. To deny that will is really remarkable and, i think, the more people can stand and support Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/election-administrators'>Election Administrators right now. And and do so, by wanting to serve, themselves, as Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/poll-workers'>Poll Workers in the future and and stay engaged. Thats how we can get tHrough this. By not allowing those who would seek to deter us from doing our job. To succeed. Yeah. I mean, i think we, all, have the thought often have the thought, theres Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/poll-workers'>Poll Workers, im glad they are here. And and this entire operation depends on them. And then, multiply that by Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/hundreds-and-thousands'>Hundreds And Thousands across the country. And reading that ap piece, you begin to worry that this assault that was launched. The sort of vitriol and the harassment and these random workers who got caught on some viral video that, you know, blows up in a qanon forum. That has realtangible effects on our ability, actually, to administer freeandfair elections. Yeah. And i think its important to toor to realize, one, that we all have a role to play in protecting democracy. Indeed, democracy prevailed in 2020 and i agreed with what you were talking about earlier that it is just the beginning of a really unprecedented assault on our democracy. But we can continue to have our democracy prevail, if good people in all sorts of positions do the right thing on both sides of the aisle. And thats what happened in 2020, and we need more good people to step up and serve as Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/poll-workers'>Poll Workers, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/election-administrators'>Election Administrators, on the front lines protecting democracy. And we cant forget tHroughout history, we also know that those who have stood on the front lines of democracy. They have faced these tHreats. I have a rose behind me that was on john lewiss casket, when he was carried over one last time in selma, last july. And it always reminds me of the real sacrifices that have been made by those who come before us. To serve on the front lines protecting everyones right to vote. That is the reality of our Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/countrys-history'>Countrys History and continues to be a reality today. The republicans in your state, in the state legislature, particularly, obviously, have had a very contentious relationship with the states democratic governor, gretchen whitmer. With you, you have been a target of a lot of their vitriol. Rhetorically. There there theres sort of theres, both, a way in which your state has served as a kind of laboratory. I think these kind of capitol you know, protests at the capitol. Armed protest at the capitol intimidation sort of started we saw Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/during-covid'>During Covid last year in michigan. But also, i wonder, if you are worried or concerned about michigan republicans attempting to, kind of, go the route we have seen the folks in, say, arizona go, or other states . Oh, absolutely, its all connected. I think what we are seeing in arizona it just the beginning. And until, again, there is real accountability at the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/ballot-box'>Ballot Box for republican leaders who have continued to spread these lies. We are going to see this these efforts to continue. To undermine Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/peoples-faith'>Peoples Faith in the process. To try to spread audits that are fake audits like this to other states. And to, also, change the rules the game to make it harder for people to vote and strip Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/election-officials'>Election Officials of their Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/authority-and-ability'>Authority And Ability to protect the integrity of elections. And the other thing thats really pernicious about all of this is they are claiming its in furtherance of protecting the security of the elections. Protecting the integrity of the vote. And people need to know that thats really not what is is happening behind the scenes. These individuals, who are pushing for more fake audits around country are really just trying to undermine democracy and tHreaten the security of our elections and its going to take all of us standing up, speaking the truth, and pushing back. And holding Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/everyone-accountable'>Everyone Accountable who is spreading these lies if our democracys going to make it tHrough this moment. Are the prominent republicans in your state willing to do that . I know, there was, of course, the member of the election board. The the sort of swing republican, who who, correctly, voted to certify the the election for the state, i think, it was. And and faced recriminations i think has left that position now . If if im not if im not yeah. And that just underscores, you know, how 2024. Those who tried to undermine the election will be back. And and you you see strains of that, all tHroughout, in everything thats happening now. In arizona and elsewhere. To change the rules and make it harder to vote. Its, all, about really continuing this effort to undermine democracy tHrough the nextpresident ial election. And i am deeply concerned that, when that time occurs, those bad actors will be more strategic, better funded, organized. And and in more places of authority than they were in 2020. And that is a ignificant tHreat but its, again, one we can overcome by staying vigilant and getting involved ourselves. Being willing to stand up and protect our democracy. Roger, maybe, take us tHrough the timeline here of the initial decision by boeing, which was one of the, sort of, well, we are stopping all giving for now, decisions. And then, what happened afterwards . Yeah. Thanks, cHris. So, in early january, january 13th, boeing announces at the same time lockheed, corporate aerospace, military contractors, announce, you know, under Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/public-pressure'>Public Pressure that they were going to suspend campaign donations. And while some companies, as you said, some companies donations to the socalled Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/insurrection-caucus'>Insurrection Caucus or Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/sedition-caucus'>Sedition Caucus of 147 republicans who voted to decertified electoralcollege results. Boeing said, well, were just going to suspend allpolitical giving. And they did not put a timeline on it. Some companies said that they were going to just stop, altogether. Some said just for this election. Boeing sort of played it safe, kind of both ways. Since early january, we havent heard, really, anything from them for months. They didnt say when they were going to resume. But the latest filing, it came in under the rug, that yeah, they had started in may. Couple companies just started. They announced it. Boeing did not. Yeah. So this was you you caught this in the in the requiredpublic filings, right . This was not like yes. Yes. And they did not and this was not them publicly announcing like, okay, were were were back to it. They just started doing it. And then, they got caught doing it. Yeah. Well, i mean, got caught. Its its public disclosure. So, you know, whatever. Ill be ill see it. But, you know, as you pointed out, that, you know, they gave you a statement. They they did not give us a statement in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/daily-beast'>Daily Beast for this article. But in that statement, they said, will, you know, this is why we are doing it. We are giving it back because the interest of the interest of our company. If you look at the tHree members that they contributed to, they gave to Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/steve-scalise'>Steve Scalise who is the minority whip, right . So he like rounds up all the votes. They also gave to jack birdman, two other republicans. Both of those republicans, harzler, and bergman, sit on committees. And Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/steve-scalise'>Steve Scalise he does not sit on one of those subcommittees. He is the cochair of the allpowerful shellfish caucus. But he is, also, in the whats called the longrange strike caucus. And they advocate for bombings. So, you can sort of see why boeing would pick these people to to the longrange strike caucus. Yes, of course. Deeply, deeply dystopian, but also real. Well, what about the republican Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/attorneys-general'>Attorneys General of america which, you know, they were pretty i got to say, they as a body pretty off the leash in the runup to Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th. I think you have the majority of republican Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/attorneys-general'>Attorneys General. And then, that actual political body like raising money, right, to actively be part of the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th festivities. At least the sort of, you know, march part of it. Yeah. They i think, there were a total of 17 that cosigned with ken paxton. He is a texas attorney general. He led the suit. He wrote it and filed it back in december. And you might remember viewers might remember that the suit got dismissed after tHree days in a ruling that was like two or tHree sentences long from the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/supreme-court'>Supreme Court and said you dont have standing, you cant bring this. But paxton led it. And then, you had a number of members of the house, republicans, that signed on to it. Yep. And, you know, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/steve-scalise'>Steve Scalise is one of them. And so, all tHree of them signed on to this suit. But yeah, you are right. Theres been a lot of news over the past year. Sort of aligning itself with, you know, further and further to the right with those type of politics. Now, one level, its insanely paranoid to secretly subpoena your own white Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/house-counsel'>House Counsel. Just over an hour ago, the chairman of the house just just disHry committee, saying reports of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/spying-raise'>Spying Raise serious constitutional and separation of power concerns. Charlie savage, and he joins me now. First, i will just start with the basics here. I mean, this one really put my jaw on the floor. I mean, you know, we know that trump doesnt think particularly highly of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/adam-schiff'>Adam Schiff. And that, you know, thought the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/new-york'>New York times and other places were sort of his enemies. And we dont in terms of mcgahn, we dont even know it hes the mainHref='https://vimarsana.com/news/justice-department'>Justice Department. Or it could be the mueller investigation. All we know is in february of 2018, apple received a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/grandjury-subpoena'>Grandjury Subpoena for information in about the account of don mcgahn. And this appears to be similar to the the subpoena that resulted in the collection of that congressional information, which also went over in february of 2018. Although, they appear to be coincidental, rather than rather than connected to each other in terms of which federal district they were coming out of and the date and so forth. So, one of the common techniques in a criminal investigation, of various types, is that when you are looking at somebody. You get all of their phone records. Or email records. And then, you have this long list of phones numbers that called them. Or that and you dont know who those people are or Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/email-address'>Email Addresses that interacted with them. And so, investigators often use a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/grandjury-subpoena'>Grandjury Subpoena to accompany, like, apple or google, to say, do you have any accounts that are linked to this Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/phone-number'>Phone Number . Or this Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/email-address'>Email Address . Even after the state had very smooth election, with very high turnout. The republicans did well in. Is is is a feeling, among many, that theres like a real kind of existential tHreat to american democracy, in its current form . And i wonder, whether you feel thats the case . CHris, there is no doubt about it. There is a major tHreat to american democracy. Look. At 1 6. I was in the capitol on that day, watching the peaceful transfer of power, when all hell broke loose. An insurrection on our government. But even after what the members of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/congress-or-staff'>Congress Or Staff and others, the people who work in the capitol went tHrough. We had, as you know, several members of congress who came, back, to the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/house-floor'>House Floor and voted to overturn a freeandfair election. And now, youve youve said it. We see florida. But too many other states, around the nation, who are passing antivotingrights laws. And so, in order to change that, cHris, weve got to change the kind of people that we send to congress. Weve got to have people, in the upper chamber, and the lower chamber, who support an independent commission. That will get to the bottom of it, yet again. So, we will know, exactly, how it happened. You know, who planned it . Who helped to fund it . Who else incited it . We lost 600,000 people. We, also, know that hundreds of thousand people were put out of work, tHrough no fault of their own. Yeah, this is right, cHris. And whats happening is this variant of india is even more transmissible than the one from the uk. The one from the uk was particularly transmissible. That took over the original lineage, and now this one from the delta is accelerating across the uk, now responsible for the majority of infections. Its the most transmissible variant we have seen to date yet. And whats happening is anyone who has not been vaccinated, its getting people very sick, even young people, even adolescents. So Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/mother-nature'>Mother Nature is telling us we have something to look out for because now almost 10 of the variants in the united states are the same Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/delta-variant'>Delta Variant. So where Vaccination Rates are low, especially in the south, we have to worry for the summer. This is where we have wide dispersion in what the numbers are from between, say, a state like vermont Writs Rr very high or a state like Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/alabama-or-mississippi'>Alabama Or Mississippi where its quite low. And you say its the piece, you know, a confluence of new factors may place children and adolescents in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/pandemic-cross'>Pandemic Cross hairs. What do we know about the relationship between basically the level of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/community-vaccination'>Community Vaccination and where were going to be most at risk in terms of this Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/variants-growth'>Variants Growth . So you take a state like vermont or massachusetts that has more than 80 of the adults vaccinated, and it means theyre basically snuffing out virus transmission. In alabama and louisiana, as you point out, where the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vaccination-coverage'>Vaccination Coverage is only half, were in trouble. And remember, its not homogeneously distributed, the vaccinations. Basically, the older americans are better vaccinated. If you look at adolescents in louisiana and alabama, fewer than 10 are vaccinated. So this is a huge vulnerability here as well as the young adults, which are vaccinated at very low levels. And so im quite worried that we could see a big surge in the number of cases in young people in the south and remember what is going to happen here. This time last year, we were going pretty good and we had that massive Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/summer-surge'>Summer Surge in july and august. Im worried after the July 4th holiday, we could be in for difficult times in july and august among young people in the south. It seems to me we should note even in the uk, or places where theres been transmitting, that people with both shots of the vaccine and pass that sort of window seems to, again, have quite good protection against the variant, and the solution here is just continue mass vaccination as aggressively as possible . Thats right. And so we have to redouble our efforts to vaccinate young people, especially in the southern vulnerable areas. And it turns out that for this vaccine, a single Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/dose-wont'>Dose Wont do it. A single dose is not very effective against this Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/delta-variant'>Delta Variant. So even if we start vaccinating adolescents and young adults now, were still about five to six weeks away before theyre fully vaccinated. First dose, tHree or four weeks later, the second dose, then a week or two after that before theyre fully immunized. What im trying to do now is get everybody to understand this and redouble our efforts to vaccinate the southern states, especially young people. Because if we wait for the surge, its going to be too late.
