Strong man at a news conference. Well have much more in just a minute as we await the president to disembark from Air Force one. Also this hour Breaking News out of israel. Wow, its been a couple of hours. After 12 years, Benjamin Netanyahu has been voted out of office as Prime Minister. A new government surviving a key parliament vote. What we know about the new Prime Minister, Neftali Bennett and what is on the minds of World Leaders. We want to start with that Breaking News in brussels where the president has arrived for the first time after taking office. They wrapped up the g7 just hours ago. One more leg in the President S International Tour leading up to wednesday when he flies to geneva for his muchanticipated meeting with Vladimir Putin. Secretary of State Blinken gave us a preview of just how he expects that meeting to go. The purpose of the meeting is for the president to do two things, which hes made very clear already. Its to tell President Putin directly that we would like a more stable, predictable relationship with russia. In that context there may be an ability to work on some issues where we have overlapping interests. But if russia is going to continue to take reckless or aggressive actions against us or any of our partners or allies, well respond forcefully. So from brussels i want to bring in nbcs Mike Memoli and Anne Gearan as we await the president to disembark from Air Force one for that Arrival Ceremony for the president. Mike, good to see you, good to see both of you. Mike, bring us up to date as to what we can expect and what we know about this Arrival Ceremony in brussels. It seems as if the president had a pretty successful time at the g7. Reporter well, yasmin, im very curious to see how long the president lingers on Air Force one for one very good reason. We know that of course the last thing he did before leaving the United Kingdom was to have tea with the queen. Our colleague, peter alexander, who was on Air Force one with the president and some of the other reporters who are part of that traveling press pool, i think they were eager to hear a little bit more from the president about that meeting. So im curious if the president might be back talking to our colleagues just to share a little bit more about that conversation. He did share a little bit on the tarmac in london before they took off mike, i dont mean to cut you off. The president just disembarking from Air Force one now so if he had that conversation, it seems as though its ended. The president arriving for this Welcome Ceremony in brussels, beginning the Nato Leg of this tour leading up to wednesdays meeting with russian president Vladimir Putin. The First Lady actually from my understanding returning to washington after the G7 Summit and the president here, of course, Greeting Leaders there in this brussels welcome tour. Mike, continue on. Reporter sure thing. I was just saying about how fascinating it was to hear from the president that one of the things the queen asked them about during their private audience was about xi jinping, about Vladimir Putin, the queen being a collector of information over her many decades on the throne. So perhaps well learn if the president shared any more about that conversation. As he turns now, the focus here to brussels which is a very international city. Its not just the headquarters of nato, its also the headquarters of the European Union. Those are two very important meetings that the president will be holding here over the next few days. Just as a matter of fact a few moments ago we got some new information from the White House about what exactly it is that the president is hoping to focus on during his conversations with nato leaders specifically, those 30 allies, part of that post Cold War military alliance. One of the things that they are saying is that the president really wants to just update the Mission Statement for nato altogether not just to focus on the aggression from russia that continues to be at issue. That was part of the original Foundation Of The Alliance was targeting the soviet union, but also to include china. Thats a significant development given what weve seen as the g7 leaders in cornwall were focused on what language they would use. Theyre talking about elevating climate as an important issue these leaders focus on. We also know during the time that the president spends here in Brussels Hell have a Oneonone Meeting with turkish president erdogan. Turkey is a nato ally. Buts athe president has been framing this trip, yasmin, youve heard about highlighting the value of democracy in a battle with autocracies. Weve seen turkey moving in a much more autocratic direction so thats very much a Sleeper Issue or Sleeper Conversation that were maybe not paying enough attention to thats happening over the next few days, yasmin. Anne, as were waiting for the president to drive away here getting into his vehicle, you cant but think about the task he has ahead with nato, considering we have just had four years of Donald Trump in the White House. In a way, hes going to have to reestablish Trust And Standing of the united states inside of the nato alliance. Yes, thats exactly right. Absolutely, yasmin. Im sorry, i defer to anne. Sorry, mike. I went to anne on that. Lots going on, guys. Take it away. Anne. So youre exactly right. The president had the same job that he had at the g7 which is to reestablish individual ties with leaders who were unnerved, alarmed or worse by the years of Donald Trump. And to really double down on u. S. Commitments to these alliances as organizations. The Nato Piece is a little different in that nato is primarily a military alliance. Its not just a talking shop, its about weapons and wars and deploying soldiers. We have one huge Nato Mission thats coming to an end now in afghanistan. A lot of the discussion, although its not the thing that President Biden most wants to talk about here, is going to be about winding down a nearly 20year Military Mission that nato undertook and which is now ending largely because President Biden has decided to end the u. S. Military presence there. So thats another subtext here in addition to the ones that mike laid out. And i think some of the nato allies are a little bit uncomfortable, frankly, with the way that that happened so quickly, so early in President Bidens term. Hey, mike, so as we were talking about this, a lot happening in the last couple hours or so. Amidst all of this, you Cant Help but think about the fact that now we are getting word from israel that former Prime Minister of israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, and im saying former now because he has officially now been unseated. You Cant Help but think this is top of mind for many of the World Leaders in the days ahead as theyre having these conversations. Talk about what were hearing on the white House Response to this news out of israel. Reporter well, thats right, yasmin. Think about as we are covering the first trip abroad by President Biden, what was really one of the first major tests of Foreign Policy in the biden administration and that was, of course, the days of Fighting We Saw in gaza. The Air Strikes back and forth and the degree to which the White House was working very quietly of course to try to manage that situation. Well, now the White House rather quickly after we saw that vote to back the new government pushing bebe netanyahu out, they want to continue the close and enduring relationship between the united states and israel. The relationship he had with now former prime Minister Netanyahu was one of the longest running that biden has had throughout his career. As israel and the fighting in gaza was surely also going to be a topic of conversation here in brussels, i think this adds a new layer to those conversations. President biden, whos been working and always touting his strong support for israel also knows how fragile the coalition politics in israel is as well, so hes mindful of just how fragile this new coalition is and theyll do everything they can to maintain stability and have the u. S. Be a part of that, if at all possible. So, anne, mike bringing up the relationship that Joe Biden has had with former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, knowing him all the way back to the time he served in the u. S. Embassy here. I believe thats 40 plus years they have known Each Other as politicians. Nonetheless, this is going to change dynamics with israel considering the leadership in israel is still very much to the right, if not further to the right if thats possible than Bibi Netanyahu. Talk to me about how that could change those dynamics. Yeah, its really fascinating, i cant say minimum. The Coalition Government that netanyahu had is actually about 18 different things in one. He is yet to netanyahus right himself and the only reason he has this job is a centrist. He is the mastermind behind putting this government together which is the most diverse in israeli history. It has representatives really from across the israeli spectrum and for the first time it has an arab Israeli Party as part of the governing coalition. They have never had anything like this in israel. That alone will change the way this government deals with the united states. But lets not forget that this government remains opposed to the international nuclear deal with iran that Joe Biden is trying to join and Neftali Bennett said that today. He didnt say a whole lot but he did that. So there will be some Policy Conflicts with the united states. But in the Main Bennett will not want to pick fights with Joe Biden. He has way more work to do just keeping his coalition together, governing and staying on top of a very precarious political situation in which netanyahu is now in the opposition and will be scratching Tooth And Nail to try to take this coalition apart and regain power. Anne, real quick here, what do you expect Neftali Bennetts priority to be in the first days of his government . Passing a budget. Israel has been without a budget for two years. That country is paralyzed. They have got to do this. They have had four elections in two years. So the first thing he has to do is Show Value to the people who helped put this coalition together and pass a budget, do stuff as home before he can do anything else thats of larger international concern. Mike memoli, Anne Gearan, i appreciate you guys rolling with me on this live, Breaking News. It has been a crazy couple of days as you know. I want to bring in Katty Kay and david rhode, both msnbc contributors. Welcome, guys. We were just talking about the president s arrival in brussels and the days ahead when it comes to the nato summit. All leading up to this meeting, Katty Kay, on wednesday with Vladimir Putin. The Secretary Of State in a Sitdown Interview with Andrea Mitchell, gave a bit of a preview as to what he feels we can expect from the president moving forward. The first thing that you think about in this exchange with president Vladimir Putin is the Ransomware Attacks that have been happening in this country over the last kim of months and how hes going to go about approaching putin on this. What do you think at this point the president has in store . How should he go about doing this . Its interesting the way that Joe Biden is approaching that summit with Vladimir Putin. It reminds me a little bit of the very early trip that tony Blinken And Lloyd austin took around asia where they went to korea and japan, they shored up americas traditional alliances before meeting with the chinese. So Joe Biden is doing a little bit the same playbook. This time around with that g7 meeting, now with the nato meeting, also with the European Union meeting, which sometimes gets overlooked but i think is also quite critical in this context and then going to meet Vladimir Putin. What that says to Vladimir Putin is, look, were all on the same page. Theyre not all totally on the same page but it definitely gives a united front. On this ransomware issue, i think the attacks have tripled over the last year. Thats a huge problem for the united states. Its possible its also becoming a little problem for Vladimir Putin and there could be some Wiggle Room between the two of them on trying to do something on that if putin feels this is a monster that is getting Out Of Control. Why could you expect, katty, that this has become a problem for Vladimir Putin . Because of what he said today and he was willing for an exchange . That something was happening inside of his country . Yes. Lets see if and then Joe Biden responding to that. It was some indication and perhaps the russians feel we all know that these people cannot be operating within russia without some kind of cover from the kremlin. But is it possible that actually they have got bigger, more contentious these attacks that even the kremlin wants and thats why hes making this offer of exchange of criminals in that respect. I dont know that yet, but it was just very interesting that that was raised as a possibility. Yeah. Yeah, i absolutely agree. I thought it was more interesting that the president actually responded on the record about what he would consider. I was incredibly surprised to hear the president respond on the record. Blinken didnt respond on the record with Andrea Mitchell when asked that question a couple of different ways. David, i want to bring you into the conversation. Also what weve heard about this Wednesday Meeting is areas that the united states and russia can work together. Weve heard it from blinken and from the president when asked questions. Tell me what the president is referring to. Just to continue on your conversation already, the Ransomware Attacks are important to american consumers. The Gas Outages that happened across the Eastern Seaboard was pushing up inflation. So the summits we pay close attention to them but to average americans these are constant events. So this is an opportunity for biden to deliver a reduction in these attacks and that could help him economically at home. Theres a possibility of coordination in syria. That was raised in one of the earlier interviews in terms of humanitarian supplies there. Biden recognizes that russia is in control but the country remains a miss and might need assistance there. And i think the u. S. Departure from afghanistan is a major issue. Ive covered afghanistan for many years, i have many afghan fears in kabul now. Fears are incredibly high of a collapse of the government there. Joe biden doesnt want a saigonlike situation, i. E. A pullout from a country that leads to an immediate fall of the americanbacked government there. So thats another area where he could try to work with putin. Yeah, and correct me if im wrong, david, but thats not necessarily something that putin wants either. No, it isnt. If you notice bidens rhetoric, he did say, as was mentioned earlier, that he believed biden was a killer, thats tough talking domestic politics but hes not im sorry, when asked he said about why putin acts this way, President Biden said because hes Vladimir Putin and there was a measure of Acceptance Or Respect of putin there. So i agree. Putin does not want an Out Of Control Taliban Regime that close to the south of russia. Knocking on his Back Door essentially. Lets also be clear here, he also went on to say, listen, i dont want to say anything bad now two days ahead of when im actually meeting with russian president Vladimir Putin. Basically ask me that question after i leave the meeting. He was honest, he was transparent. Katty kay, david rohde, Thank You guys, appreciate it. Still ahead, more on the Leadership Change in israel Coming Up. And much more of President Bidens foreign trip, including his summit with russian president Vladimir Putin. Well be right back. A new Bombshell Report from The New York Times a short time ago revealing Don Mcgahn was reportedly told by apple last month that his Account Information was subpoenaed three years ago. Nbcs Ali Vitali is on this for us on capitol hill. Ali, great to see you this afternoon. Thanks for joining us. So talk to us about the response here, what it has been like so far on The Hill about these cases of data being collected. Reporter yasmin, this latest revelation is truly stunning. That news that you just mentioned from The New York Times that white House Counsel Don Mcgahn as well as his wifes Account Information was subpoenaed by the Department Of Justice in 2018. Now, The Times reporting isnt clear on whether mcgahn was the subject of that subpoena or whether or not this information was just called because he was in touch with Someone Else who was the subject of that investigation. That can happen sometimes. Right now thats not clear. But you have to remember the context of when this revelation is coming against. Journalists were having their records subpoenaed as part of this investigation into leaks. Then add to these revelations that the Trump Department of justice also sought communications records from two top democrats leading investigations into the Trump Administration as well as other congressal staffers and even family members. Now, yasmin, the question starting to come how did this happen, who okayed it. Were already seeing former attorneys general from the Trump Administration distance themselves. But listen to House Speaker Nancy pelosi this morning on whats going to happen next. This is about undermining the Rule Of Law and for the attorneys general, barr and sessions, at least, to say they didnt know anything about it is beyond belief. So we will have to have them come under oath to testify about that. Reporter yasmin, this is just the beginning of democratic lawmakers here on The Hill beginning to call for answers into how this could happen. These really stunning revelations continuing to exemplify what democrats have long said about the former president , that they feel he was abusing his power and going into partisan hunts of his opponents and people who would be doing investigations into him as well as who he thinks could have been disloyal to him. And so democrats clearly finding evidence for what they have been saying the last few years. We also know even as former attorneys general like Jeff Sessions, Bill Barr, Rod Rosenstein, all distancing themselves, the Doj Watchdog saying they are going to open their own investigation. So this is just what were going to see over the next few weeks and months. I think this is going to be one of the stories of the summer. Yeah, just the beginning. Ali vitali for us on capitol hill. Thanks, ali. Talking more about these cases of data being collected by the Justice Department and the i. G. Investigation, i do want to bring in harry litman, legal Affairs Columnist for the l. A. Times. Harry, Thank You for joining us. This is incredible to me. So apple essentially turning over information on Don Mcgahn to the Department Of Justice. Is this an abuse of power . So its a mindblowing, stunning abuse of power. Sort of watergatelevel scandal. Depending on the answer to the question that ali rightly says is not clear exactly from this preliminary report, was mcgone somehow just the recipient of a call and thats the reason he somehow was without a lot of other people on a list, or was he the target . Same with swalwell and schiff. If they really were targets and The New York Times did report that, then it is completely mind blowing. How you square that with the denials from the people ali mentioned, the attorneys general and Rod Rosenstein is quite a puzzle because you could not, repeat not, repeat not in A Thousand years undertake this as an investigation without notifying and okaying them. So there remains a slim chance its all an inexplicable comedy of errors. You mentioned Bill Barr and Jeff Sessions saying we dont remember this. I spoke to Barbara Mcquade Yesterday and she as you said backed that up saying listen, you cant get things like this happening without an Attorney General involved. Or without the Attorney General involved. But the two questions that ali asked are so incredibly important as she was reporting. And those questions were how it happened and who okayed it. Are these things that the investigation can drill down on . Yeah, so thats exactly right. Again, depending on what the it is. Some kind of Happenstance Acquisition of their data or an actual targeting. The Oig Investigation can somewhat. Heres what it cant do. It cant go after former employees and make them talk. That includes barr, sessions, whit acre. But they can sit them down and what the heck happened here, whats your understanding, where did it come from. So the oig can do something. A fullon Investigation Public can do a lot more. Theres some criticism that merrick Garlands Department of justice is not doing enough and not being transparent enough about these trumpera subpoenas. So what is to be done there . Is there more that the Garland Department of justice can actually be doing . And should they really be Cleaning House in the Department Of Justice considering there are still folks there, working there, that were a part of these . Its a great question. Its clear that garland went in just wanting to put one foot in front of the other and not undertake some Truth And Reconciliation mission. The pressure on him is growing. The deputy Attorney General came out and the oig immediately saluted. Theres one big thing they can do is play it against their normal hand. They can say its big enough, serious enough, were not going here you go, guys, have at it. That would be a really, really big thing. Its possible. And he is more and more inching away from his initial determination to steer clear of all this stuff and coming to be reactive to the history of abuses that america still wants to know about and that were still learning about. Harry litman, Thank You, as always. Good to see you. Historic news out of israel where the countrys longest Serving Leader was ousted just hours ago. Reaction after the break. Welcome back, america. It sure is good to see you. Welcome back, everybody. Major Breaking News out of israel where the 12year reign of Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu just ended a short time ago. The parliament gave a vote of confidence to a new Coalition Government with Naftali Bennett. Joining me now is Kelly Cobiella who is in Tel Aviv. Stunning news to say the least on the international stage. Give us the stepbystep of what took place the last couple of hours. Reporter yasmin, we were expecting a close vote. That had been the word all along that this was going to be a nailbiter and boy, was it ever. There was one Surprise Abstention and some confused looks inside. Then at the end when that final Vote Count was read out, it was 6059 in favor of approving this new Coalition Government. Yeah, just one single vote. As we said all along the past couple of days they really couldnt afford to lose a single politician in this. Netanyahu sat sort of stone faced staring straight ahead, not much of an expression on his face at all. He was wearing a mask. While all of these Coalition Members behind him were standing up, cheering, hugging Each Other, obviously thrilled that they had made it to this point, actually becoming the new government, replacing netanyahu for the first time in 12 years. Netanyahu did at one point shortly after this vote stand up. He walked over to Naftali Bennett, his former protege, and shook his hand. Really almost immediately the government as promised went straight to work. Bennett was sworn in as Prime Minister and started to chair his very first Cabinet Meeting just a short time ago. President biden has already offered his congratulations in a white House Statement saying that israel has no better friend than the u. S. And congratulating both prime Minister Bennett and the incoming cabinet. Bennett tweeting his thanks back to the president saying that they would work to strengthen ties between the two nations. But a lot of work to be done in this new Coalition Government, no doubt. Big, big challenges ahead for them. Yasmin. Kelly, just quickly here, this happened just a few hours ago. In that time period has there been any reaction so far from israeli people on this change in government . Reporter yeah, actually youre seeing thousands really out in a square in Tel Aviv cheering. Of course there is another side to this. Netanyahu does have a strong base of support here and there are a lot of people who are disappointed with this change tonight. But there has been just this outpouring of celebrations in parts of the country from people who have been fighting for this, who have been protesting against netanyahu for more than a year now, simply because as they see it, a, they dont want a Prime Minister in power who is also fighting a legal case. As you know, hes on trial for bribery and fraud, charges that he denies. But thats been a real bone of contention among a huge segment of the population here, and also people who believe hes simply been in power for too long, 12 years as the leader of this country. A lot of people wanted change. And this is you know, this is sort of an outpouring. This is a reaction to that. And also a reaction, probably a big sense of relief among a lot of israelis, that they dont have to face a fifth election in two years and more stalemate in government. All right, Kelly Cobiella, Thank You for jumping on for us. I want to bring in joel reuben, president of the Washington Strategy Group and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of state. A stunning development out of israel with the change in government. We heard Kelly Tick through the ticktock of this whole thing, how close that vote was, 5960. Theres some analysis ive been seeing in Netanyahus Speech that it seemed he knew what was coming, highlighting the best ofs over the 12 consecutive plus another three tacked on before that. But thinking about the government ahead, as kelly mentioned, they have already gotten started. I was speaking with Anne Gearan earlier and she said the number one business should be voting on a budget. Naftali bennett has already talked about the fact that the economy is the number one priority. What changes do you expect ahead . This is a new day for israel. This is going to inject oxygen in the Body Politic of israeli society. To your point about the budget because of the multiple elections the past couple of years, israel has not been able to pass a new budget to fund the government at the levels that it needs. This coalition, it reflects all of israeli Society Minus many of the religious parties who have dominated for the past dozen years. It even includes an israeli arab political party, meaning that this party now has leveraged its political power into potential benefits from the israeli government. So were going to see a lot of action. Were going to see a lot of budget clearly going into sectors that have been been left behind for a number of years and well see a debate in this new government from across the spectrum about issues of security, issues of internal tranquility and things we havent heard coming from israel in the last decade. What you didnt talk about was the 11day Conflict that israel had yes. With gaza subsequently followed by a ceasefire. What you didnt talk about was the settlements and how palestinians can feasibly be affected by this change in government. We knew that Benjamin Netanyahu was right wing and Naftali Bennett is further right. What happens to palestinians under this new leadership . Yeah, this is going to be the biggest test for this new government because it has leftwing parties in it in addition to Naftali Bennett who earlier in his career called for annexation of parts of the west bank. So hell have to decide where does he sit and where does he take israel. Weve watched the history of israeli leaders from the rightwing side of the Camp And Move to the center on peace making. Ariel sharon, and even decades ago. So the question is will Naftali Bennett understand that to keep power he will have to work with the center and the center left. Will he make moves that alleviate pressure on the palestinian people, begin to reengage the Palestinian Authority as is necessary to keep calm and potentially to work with not potentially, but to work with the united states on these efforts. Hell have support from within his coalition. Thats what netanyahu didnt have. Nor did netanyahu try to cultivate. He had a Rightwing Base for his coalition and always kowtowed to the base. Lets then talk about quickly the relationship with the united states. Will this allow for somewhat of a reset in the relationship with the united states, especially on the heels of four years of a Trump Presidency who had a pretty close relationship with prime Minister Netanyahu but somewhat strange, i could say . Yeah. We just saw four years of prime Minister Netanyahu and Donald Trump fused at the hip. Then before that under barack obama, who i served under at the state department, a lot of tension. Joe biden may be the luckiest president in recent memory in the united states when it comes to israeli American Diplomacy because he now has a new government sitting there in jerusalem that wants to have a good relationship with the united states. It needs that in order to enable its agenda to move forward. There are members of that government, the defense minister, who was just here a week and a half ago or so working with the Biden Team or critical national security issues. So theyll have to work closely. The Biden Team has already sent out a positive statement about it. Naftali bennett understands that if he breaks this relationship or its broken on his watch, the israeli people will not support his staying in power either. A lot happening to say the least, joel rubin, thanks for jumping on with uls. Much more coverage on Netanyahus Ouster from hour Coming Up later on in our next hour. She talked about not being a man, not being a woman, period. And now language has involved to include nonbinary so i think that evolution is just so exciting to be a part of. Why did you want to start this podcast . You know, five years ago i was still explaining to people what a podcast was. So i think that its really important to document our community the way it looks today. Things are changing so drastically for the Lgbtq Community depending on where you live in the world. So really i want to document those changes through the most important people leading those changes, the artists, the actors, the politicians. I actually want to play some of your interview with John Paul Brammer who writes an advice column. It really stood out to us. I would say a really common letter that i receive is just about loneliness, just the vague feeling of not having someone around and wishing that you did and wondering whats wrong with you. The theme of whats wrong with me is very recurring, i would say. Why am i not making friends. Why am i not finding a significant other. Why do i feel so uncomfortable navigating my identity. You think about the higher than normal Suicide Rates amongst Lgbtq Community, right . You think about the higher levels of depression in the community as well. Why is it so important to share conversations like this . I think frankly it just reminds people that theyre not alone. That is why if i can be so bold, queer podcasts matter, not just mine but other ones like gender reveal. There are people in parts of the country that dont have access to Inperson Community that they are not alone and are part of something thats frankly larger. Yeah, it always feels good to know that youre not alone and other people in your community are struggling as well. Jeffrey masters, Thank You. Thank you for all the work that youre doing.
