All about Joe Biden essentially making his kind of debut as president on the World Stage and kind of renewing americas vows towards multilateralism, international institutions and really what they would call the liberal world order, the one that has essentially ensured a lot of global peace since World War ii. That is what Joe Biden is here to do. Hes trying to say diplomacy is back and america is back with a new role in the world. Now a lot of this is surrounded by awkward photo opportunities, meetings with the queen whos made her own couple of jokes and tonight theres going to be marshmallows and hot rum, Steak And Lobster On The Beach. So you might be able to see some really important global leaders snacking, chatting with Each Other, maybe walking around barefoot. So it should be quite a nice one to see and then, like you said, President Biden is going to be taking off for london to meet and sip tea with the queen. Joshua . Well, matt, actually, im jason. Joshua is the other guy. He doesnt wear a tie. Sorry. Talk about todays agenda. No problem. The way you describe it, theres beaches, theres marshmallows, but what is being talked about today. What does infrastructure mean to the 7. How are they sort of collectively having discussions about the pandemic response, whos stepping up and whos sort of slacking in the g7 as far as what youre hearing right now . Well, i mean, a lot of this g7 is just about trying to go against sort of the putins of the world, the Xi Jinpings of the world. Thats one of the things Joe Biden has made his priority. When he talks about that in the Rearview Mirror is Donald Trump. Thats what a lot of World Leaders are going to be remembering. Hes trying to say that he is not Donald Trump, that hes turning a page from that and moving on and so thats why when it comes to confronting and reaffirming excuse me, reaffirming Americas Commitment to these global institutions, a lot of this, the subtext is about the Vladimir Putins of the world who hes going to be meeting again on wednesday in geneva. The top Discussion Items especially today are the pandemic and climate change. On those topics Joe Biden feels he really can really demonstrate that multilateralism is the way to go. This is how youre going to be proceeding, that america needs partners, needs friends and that these two big issues, especially the pandemic which obviously is essentially still going on, these demonstrate, if nothing else, the need for these sorts of institutions, the kind that Donald Trump spent a lot of time disparaging. Matt, thank you so much. We are about to go live. President biden is about to Sit Down One On one with french president Emmanuel Macron. Lets go in and take a listen. U. S. President , are you willing to cooperate . And i think that what you demonstrated that leadership is partnership and we do appreciate it. I think we can do a lot, too. The united states, ive said before, were back. The u. S. Is back. We feel very, very strongly about the cohesion of nato and i for one think that the European Union is an incredibly strong and vibrant entity that has a lot to do with the ability of Western Europe to not only handle its economic issue but provide the Backbone And Support for nato. And so i were very supportive. Very supportive. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, guys. Okay. That was Emmanuel Macron, french president Emmanuel Macron having a conversation with Joe Biden and were going to talk about that and what else is happening at the second day of the G7 Summit. Joining me to discuss, Chris Jansing and Bobby Ghosh, Editor And Columnist for bloomberg opinion. Chris, ill start with you. Im going to bring up the Poll Numbers. The Poll Numbers seem to show that globally america is back, that the rest of the world is more comfortable with us as Joe Biden is president. From what youre picking up and what youve been hearing and talking with people, is that just because hes not Donald Trump or is there some specific level of Comfort And Trust that europe seems to have with Joe Biden . Well, look, i think its a little bit of both. If you look even deeper into that poll you see for example in germany its 80 trust the president to do the right thing on the global stage. It was about 10 for Donald Trump. So that comparison doesnt do well for Donald Trump. Having said that, i think what weve already seen on this stage, youve heard macron and the president already addressing this, is that part of what theyre doing is showing up and just sending a message through all of these visuals that these alliances do matter, that theyre going to go on to nato and that these partnerships can work. That Americas Democracy that america and the other democracies, the leading democracies of the world can work together. But in terms of Donald Trump, he does over shadow so much because theres a second part of this that really deals with whether or not america can be trusted. They may trust the president but they look and say, 3 1 2 years down the road is there still a policy there that could be trusted . Because weve all watched what has happened. Weve seen it with the paris climate accord. I was there when that was done. I was also working to cover the Obama White House during the iran nuclear accords, things that the former President Trump got rid of, including getting out of the w. H. O. So there is a larger question and a larger assurance that he has to make, especially at a time when theres other polls out that also show that a huge number of republicans still believe that Donald Trump should have been elected president. So theres a complicating factor there when you look at those polls about what The Big Picture is and how Donald Trump continues to cast a shadow. I want to follow up with that very quickly, chris. So to the rest of the world are you hearing people at the g7, are people still saying, hey, by the way, you guys had an attempted coup a couple of months ago, hows that going . You might think the rest of the world is looking at everything Joe Biden is saying and still have some concerns about domestic stability in the united states. Are you hearing that . Thats certainly what Vladimir Putin, who as you mentioned the president is going to be meeting with, would like people to think. There is concern about the not so much the stability of the democracy but the stability of the political situation. We know that there is a huge political divide. We know that divide has only gotten wider. We know that the opposition has made it very difficult to work together and move forward on some of these things. Many of the things that the president has done already, the things hes talking about doing he may have to do just with democrats. So there is concern about that. I dont want to overstate it, but i dont think you can dismiss it either. So speaking of the sort of big 400 Pound Elephant that everybody is concerned about for next wednesday, bobby, i want to play you some sound about Vladimir Putins initial thoughts about Joe Biden. Well talk about it when we come back. Translator we have a bilateral relationship that has deteriorated to its lowest point in previous years. Former u. S. President mr. Trump is an extraordinary individual, talented individual. President biden is radically different than trump. It is my great hope, yes, there are some advantages, some disadvantages. Now you couldnt see in the camera all of the puppet Strings President Putin had for trump, but this meeting between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin, what can we take from putins initial statements and should we have any high expectations for what should be accomplished or what the reset might be when the two World Leaders meet next wednesday . I wouldnt have any expectations. That is putin reminding me i am still here. Hes done that not only in an interview but also in his actions over the last several weeks leading up to the meeting by declaring Opposition Groups as extremists and by basically refusing to stand down on any of the issues that he knows biden is going to bring up on ukraine, on belarus, On Cyber Attacks against american institutions and companies. There is absolutely no sign that Vladimir Putin is ready to make any sort of concessions and why should he . Which is why its important for biden to get before he reaches that point to get the Western Consensus firmly behind him. Thats been the plan all along. Thats why its g7, then nate Tow And Meeting in london before that with the brits. Allies in europe and then he goes to see putin. And putin will recognize that hes dealing with a different leader. He will suddenly remember how easily he could pull the wool over Donald Trumps eyes. Hell know that he cant do that with Joe Biden and itll be a cagey affair. Itll be like the traditional meetings between in the old days between soviet leaders and american leaders where there will be no hugs. The smiles will be plastic. The Hand Shakes will be firm but not a whole lot would be actually revealed and given away. And, jason, if i can, i think its important to note that we just learned this morning that there is not going to be a joint Press Conference. There is not going to be the kind of situation that bobby referred to In Helsinki where, you know, the president accepted vladimir Putins Word for the fact that, oh, he had nothing to do with interference in the 2016 election. Right. So clearly this administration is saying, were not going to have any of that. The president is going to come out after that meeting. Hell hold his Press Conference One On one. Theyre establishing that there is a very significant difference on very many levels from this administration from the last. So theres a thing that basically Joe Biden has to straddle here, right, which is the difference between establishing, hey, look, were not going to put up with bounties. Were not going to put up with any Election Interference but changing relationships you have the Ns2 Pipeline going from russia to germany. The united states said there was going to be a problem. They said, hey, we need their oil. Im curious, how is Joe Biden going to be able to come out of this meeting and tell the rest of europe, hey, hes a Bad Guy even though in some ways European Relationships are slightly less frosty than they used to be even eight years ago. The europeans dont need reminding from biden. Putin is constantly reminding them that hes a Bad Guy, but they have the russian bear to use the old Cliche Right in their backyard. They know they have to deal with putin. They know putin is not going anywhere. There are strong Energy Connections they know they need. Thats bidens problem. On the one hand he needs the europeans to be firmly behind the united states but the europeans are not that firm at the moment. Theyve used the trump years as an excuse to some degree to say, look, the americans are not reliable but the fact is that these Energy Connections predate trump and will continue long after all the people who posed for those pictures On The Beach have passed from the scene. The straddling that you mentioned, the difficulties actually on the side of the europeans. Biden can take a firm position. Putin can take a firm position. Its the europeans who are in a complicated situation. They need the american Security Umbrella through nato. They need the american economy and the access to the american economy but at the same time they do need russian gas. Certainly the germans do, and they know the russians are sitting right there taking bite sized pieces of europe, as in the ukraine, who knows What Happens Next and belarus. So theyre the ones who have to have this really awkward relationship with a difficult neighbor. In a global environment of frenemies, former friends and new friends, another big name On The Horizon and a huge discussion at this g7 is china. The united states sees china as a military and economic threat. Some may see them as an economic threat, not necessarily a cultural one. Thats before you talk about chinas longterm investment going on in Subsahara And Africa in the last 15 years. What do you hear now that biden is selling the rest of the world about china . Is he saying we have to worry about them Mill 25ir8ly . We have to block them from intellectual Property Threat . Both of those things. The idea that hes tried to be more aggressive toward china. Look, there are any number of complicating factors besides what you mentioned and the fact that there are issues with taiwan, with human rights. What you know from europe is that those Trading Partnerships are strong. You have, for example, with germany, they literally sell millions of cars to china so the trading situation, the economic partnerships make it much more fraught for the European Nations that Joe Biden is going to be trying to convince and both sides know, whether its the e. U. Or its canada or its President Biden that without china one of the key things that they want to get done here, which is some action on global warming doesnt get done. If you dont have china as part of that partnership, it doesnt have the impact that it needs to have. And i think one of the things youre going to be watching very closely is that the president would like to have a very strong statement on forced labor. Its not clear that the other members of the g7 are willing to go on board and put that in writing so were going to watch how this all unfolds, but its clear from the very start and even from when he was running for president that this is the center piece. Something that Joe Biden feels very strongly about and wants to take an aggressive stance against china. Thank you, Bobby Ghosh and Chris Jansing. There are many things that are open to debate in america, but the right of all eligible citizens to vote is not one of them. That means ensuring that all eligible voters can cast a vote, that all lawful votes are counted and that every voter has access to accurate information. The Department Of Justice will never stop working to protect the democracy which allamericans are entitled. Department of justice is stepping up the fight against voter suppression. Evenly split senate could protect Voting Rights bypassing the for the people act. Democratic senator Joe Manchin has said hes a strong, firm no. My next guest is taking the Fight Right to the West Virginia senators backyard. We have author of we are called to be a movement. Thank you so much, reverend, for joining us. Im going to start right off. I am disturbed and shocked by Joe Manchins behavior like most other americans are. What do you hope to accomplish with your moral Monday March . Well, thank you so much for that question. Listen, none of the things we have came from The Street and inside legislation. The voting Rights Act, none of the laws that weve ever won, why do we think it would take anything less. Manchin comes from the state where one of the senators before him was a deep filibuster. The Russell Building is named after a filibuster. The people of West Virginia invited us. They are sick and tired of him saying theyre sick and tired of him saying that. Were going to have white folks, black people from the hood, one says 70 of West Virginians want a for the people act and voting act. So the first thing is to correct the record in his Home State and let the nation know why all of us have to speak out. Secondly, were going to make it clear this is not just about race but this is about race and class. When you suppress the vote, you also allow people to get elected through a suppressed Voting Pattern that then when they get elected they block Living Wages, infrastructure, public education, Health Care. All things that West Virginians need because there are 700,000 poor low wealth people in West Virginia. 350,000 make less than Living Wage. Reverend, when i read it, i was shocked. I dont think Sesame Street could come up with a better Word Salad than he put out. What was your reaction when you first read his Op Ed . Were you thinking like, all right, weve got to russell up the Posse And Head straight there . Did you immediately get a Phone Call . What was your reaction to hearing the actual words from Joe Manchin as to why he wanted to hold up American Democracy . Well, you know, manchin tries to be smooth with his words. I often say hes the quarterback. He thinks he can smooth the talk. We met with him in february with about 12 West Virginians and we had white people in the room and black people in the room. His positions are constitutionally inconsistent, morally indefensible. There has never been a time when filibuster has been used to move the nation forward. If everything had to be a bipartisan deal we wouldnt have passed a 14th Amendment Or 15th amendment. And many other laws that helped this be more of the american we promised. All of that was wordsmithing. The last one is, who has a thumb on his neck. Whos behind this . Because it makes no sense. He is helping to embolden and entrench the lie. Hes encouraging the extremists. Not the for the people act. Heres the bottom line, we need both. We need both. I come from a state, jason, where we fought without the voting Rights Act, it took us four years to defeat a bad voting law. Four years of fighting and 1200 people getting arrested and about 16 lawyers. So we need to restore the voting Rights Act and we need the for the people act. I love a saturday sermon. We just got one. Thank you very much, bishop. We will be keeping up with this and your march. Thank you very much. Joe manchin may be winning the spotlight, but hes losing West Virginia. Senator manchin pointed out over and over again, hes been a democrat all of his life. Im certainly not anticipating hes going to cross the aisle, but i do admire his willingness to protect the senate as an institution. The filibuster is not about an issue as it is about the senate as an institution. It was constructed to slow things down, to make sure the right thing was done for the country. Senate selfappointed Grim Reaper lavishly praised West Virginia senator Joe Manchin for his unwavering position for screwing over the country, im sorry, the filibuster. Joining me now is steven smith, cochair of West Virginia cant wait. Thank you, steven, so much for talking with me this morning. I want to start this off because i think naturally theres a lot of projection about West Virginia, what people think West Virginians actually feel. Im familiar with the state. When i lived in ohio we would go to West Virginia to go gambling. There is a lot i dont think people understand. What is the disconnect between Joe Manchins position and the needs on the ground in the senate. Thanks for asking that question. We could recite the numbers, right . More than 75 of us want the for the people act. Nearly 2 3 of West Virginians want a wealth tax. Heres a secret. Our senators dont care. You dont become a senator because youre a servant of the people. You get elected to high office in West Virginia because youre rich or your daddy was a politician. West virginian politicians dont have a D Or R so we, the people, have to stop begging those in power for more crumbs and start building the political machines that can actually threaten their existence and thats what were doing here in West Virginia. I love the idea were no longer satisfied with love kernels coming down from on high. This becomes a really important political question. I have speculated looking at Manchins Election in 2018. He squeeked by with 49 of the vote. I dont think the guy can get reelected in 2024. On the ground do you think Joe Manchin is doing this because he thinks its going to help him get reelected or do you think hes likely to drop out . What kind of primary challenges is he very likely to face in 2024 if he hasnt left office yet . I mean, we will run someone against him. Its an easy decision. We could never back Senator Capito or Senator Manchin because we refuse to support candidates who have sold out to corporate interests. The fight in West Virginia isnt left versus right, its up versus down. We have to do the Work Door to door, Town By town, County By county. Were a bunch of people who got tired of voting for the lesser of two evils. Would he went out and recruited 101 candidates up and down the ballot to run in 2020. These are no corporate cash, never taken money from big corporate donors, pharmaceutical companies, pro labor. People who actually look like and represent the people of our state and we won 51 primaries. We won 15 candidates in office now and thats how its got to work. Were accessible because this power has to come from the bottom up. I love that level of enthusiasm. I cant remember the last time i memorized a Phone Number thanks to my Cell Phone. I want to play you Sound Bite from Joe Manchin doubling, tripling, quadrupling down on his thoughts. The template she has is something i think everybody is using and working off of. The template she had got rejected by the white house. Only thing im telling you, everybody had a good meeting last night. It was productive. If this doesnt work, would you be willing to go it alone with a democrat only option . I never give up. Never give up. So, look, i appreciate somebody who has a stick tuttiveness, somebody who never wants to give up. Very quickly, do you think this is what Joe Manchin believes . Does he think he has some magical power over the republicans or do you think this is about dark money and just a desire to stay in a position of influence with the democratic party which is kind of in a weak position right now . Who knows whats in his head, right . The question is whose side are you on . Hes not choosing bipartisanship, hes choosing the side of the wealthy. Hes choosing the side of the status quo. The only way to get an Establishment Candidate is to work like hell to replace them. Thank you so much, steven hit. Love your enthusiasm. Pose was ground breaking when it sashayed on to our screens three years ago. Put a spotlight on Trans And Queer black and brown people. It ushered in queer voices of color. Here to break it down is clay and jared hill, cohost of the podcast fanty. Hes part of the national association of black journalists. Im going to say this up front. These are two of the smartest minds out there. These guys keep me correct and informed on these kinds of issues on a regular basis. Jeremy, start with you. Just tell me tell the audience a little bit about what is the significance of a show like pose . Because from my perspective, the presentation of queer black people on tv, it was the captain on brooklyn 99. Safe, desexualized gay black men. What makes pose so significant in our current environment. What makes pose so saying were the smartest people you know is putting a lot of pressure on me. Weve never seen queer people of color that told these stories about Queer And Trans people that unpacks the Ball Culture in new York City in the 80s and early 90s. We are getting to see queer stories in a way weve never seen them before. We hear this. We never get to see x, y, z on screen. Thats something we hear so frequently that it loses a little bit of its power. When we think about the ways were seeing queer people and queer people of color on this show, the important thing is looking at the ways we are able to start to see more different kinds of what i like to call black diversity, right . We have the images we see of black folks that are in families. We see them in the workplace and things like that, but now were getting to see more and more images of black folks on screen where were able not to necessarily see ourselves reflected in every single thing. Im a black Queer Person so im seeing a lot of myself reflected in this show. The importance of this is were able to not need to see ourselves reflected in every image and not feeling so disassociated from the content if it doesnt look like us because were getting to see more and more of these images and pose did such a beautiful job of showing black queer people loving Each Other. That was the most beautiful part of pose. Clay, recent polling and data and information shows us that actually the amount of lgbtq, a, represents of black and brown people has increased on television every single year for the last couple of years, but as is the case with all black people, a lot of times these images are not being created and these stories arent being written by black people let alone black queer people. What do you think as we see more of these images, as more and more black queer characters show up . What is still missing . When you think about media, black queer people have been relegated to the Side Show or dying of hiv or aids and when i think about pose and moving forward, it reminds me of a quote that is said i am not tragic gli colored. I am not tragically gay, i am not tragically black. Were no longer regulated to the lgbtq tragedies. With pose, you have black people writing. You have to be involved in this content. For me, the difference is us being in control of our own stories. Us being in control of our own narrative. There were folks who were in pose who were actually a part of this Ballroom Scene back in the 1990s. We are not tragedies with identities. For me, thats powerful, important, thats the only way to go moving forward even when it comes to the black stories, that we have to make sure were in control of our content. So i want to ask you this, clay, ive heard you talk about this. Weve had conversations about this, both on and off the air, that you say all too often when black queer stories are presented the experience of racism within the Queer Community is sometimes downplayed or dismissed. Can you talk a little bit about that, about how intersectionality is important when were writing about black characters and black queer characters in particular. When i was younger, for example, when i thought of lgbt folks, i just thought of white people. This may be crazy. When i quote, unquote came out in 95 i didnt know that black queer folks even existed. So there has been a coopting of Lgbtq Identity that you normally see white middle upper class men. You feel like youre removed. You feel like youre not a part of it. One of the things that pose did is it managed to show the racism within the lgbt community. People think were some corporate Rainbow Flag at target but were not. There was a lot of racism that really you get penalized for if you call it out. And if i can just add one really quick thing. Even from a political side of it. You look at someone like caitlynener who is the face of transgender folks. Running for governor of california. She cant even say that trump lost the election this past week. I mean, Caitlyn Jenner sided with a party that is antilgbt, antitrans yet she alliance herself with that. Shes turning into the i dont know senator Tim Scott of the trans community. Were not calling that out. You look at someone like Kristin Cinema who was a democrat who got all of this press for being bisexual and elected a senator. Shes a dixicrat. Shes holding up relative Jim Crow like the filibuster. Being lgbt does not remove you from your privilege when it comes to race and wealth. Jared, i want to close on this. This is a key thing. Some of the most amazing advances weve seen in black and Latina Queer Presentation has been in Comic Books. Marvel has its own queer color book. Something that concerns me is this idea that you have these black and brown and asian characters who come out queer. They still keep the white ones straight. No one ever suggests the Winter Soldier in Captain America had something when they were trapped fighting the wars and everything else like that. Do you see these sorts of moves as progress or do you still think we have a lot of work to go as far as decentralizing straight white men and heroism despite the number of black and brown queer characters we now have . I want to let the people know that im not a Comic Book person. This is you trying me. I do think this is one of those things that it may be a Half Step forward, right . Were getting this equal representation and were doing it in a Half Step kind of way. When were seeing whether its marvel, dc, incorporaing people of color that are queer, theyre excited to get the Diversity Points or excited that theyre trans or queer, whatever it is. Its a step of growth. Why cant we see these other marginalized groups being represented in various different kind of ways. To the point that youre making about, yeah, we can see the Queer Person if theyre a person of color but not our shiny white person, that is a problem that continues to persist. I think as we continue to look at this through the zeitgeist, i think were looking back on it. So often we try to censure things in white narratives that are clean, crisp, beautiful. When it comes to the people of color we dont give that same opportunity. It will be interesting to watch these things evolve over time. Thank you very much, Clay Cane and jared hill. We are going to continue this conversation. After the break, one of my favorite Cross Connection segments, ill make It Make Sense next. Ill always be in your heart. Hi little brian. Its time to make It Make Sense. Miss tamica. Im tamika from missouri. I just want to say i love your show. My question is in regards to the Supreme Court. What is the process that we need to utilize to add more justices to the Supreme Court so that we have a more and fair and balanced supreme Court System that represents the diverse country in which we live . Thank you. Miss tamika, thanks for this question for the chance to check in with our third coequal branch of government. With most of the attention on President Biden in congress, weve learned that the court plans to take up an Abortion Case that can have catastrophic implications for Roe Versus Wade and theyre weighing whether or not to take a look at Affirmative Action in college emissions. The courts ideological balance is crucial especially since they have a 63 conservative majority. The legal process is pretty simple. Congress just has to pass a law, which it did most recently back in 1869 setting the Courts Membership at its current limit of 9. Of course, saying congress just has to pass a law is a little like saying in a couple of weeks in a gym i can be simone biles. Although there is a bill to expand from 9 to 13 justices, it has little chance of success because you can be sure Mitch Mcconnell will do anything not to give President Biden a chance to appoint new justices and ruin the conservative majority that mitch has worked so, so hard for. First, by stealing a supreme Court Seat from President Biden when justice Ka She A died. Then by helping getting a man accused of Sexual Misconduct onto the bench, then by jamming through Amy Comey barretts confirmation just eight days before the election of 2020. Youll remember that around barretts confirmation the calls for the next democratic president were getting louder. He wasnt a fan of the idea of actually expanding the court and refused to come down strongly one way or another. This april he created a 36 member chamber, a commission to study possible structural changes to americas highest court. Not only changing the number of justices but other moves like, i dont know, imposing term limits. The commission had its first public meeting outlining their bylaws and Coming Up with a schedule of hearings later this summer. In the meantime some progressives have shifted their attention to Steven Breye urging him to step down now and make room for one of bidens picks. Perhaps even the first black woman. You can bet tiffany and the team will be keeping an eye. For those of you at home, send the show your 1 minute or less Video Question to Cross Connection nbc uni. Good morning. Welcome back to the Cross Connection. Im Jason Johnson in for tiffany cross. We have a lot of Trending Topics to get to but first we begin in Jolly Old England where President Biden is attending the annual G7 Summit meeting. He just met with french president Emmanuel Macron and has more meetings before his meeting with russian president Vladimir Putin. Im joined by Nbc News white House Correspondent mike memele. You have the best background i have seen this morning, mike. Ive got to start with this. This is a key part. As a political science professor, i have long studied the sort of Special Relationship that the united states has had with the u. K. I want to play a montage of Joe Bidens interactions with Boris Johnson. The Special Relationship, it is not said lightly, the Special Relationship between our people. Our Special Relationship is in culture. Thats the Special Relationship. We are so bound together that nothings going to impact the emotional and cultural and intellectual affinities of our two countries. America and great britain have a Special Relationship. We both have pledged to keep the relationship as special as possible. And im convinced it will continue to be. Now i dont know if we could describe whats going on right now as a Special Relationship. If this were facebook it would be like, its complicated. How are things between Joe Biden and Boris Johnson . Clearly boris got along great with Donald Trump. They both sort of rose to power in a similar way being on reality television. Has biden been able to build a bridge . Is Boris Johnson even interested in maintaining that Special Relationship with the new american president . Reporter jason, it was interesting when the Conservative Party won the last general election and put Boris Johnson into 10 downing street. Biden called him a physical and emotional clone of Donald Trump. He used his election as a warning of course of how far left the Labor Party had moved in bidens view here, that it was a warning to democrats back in the states not to move similarly to the left or we might reelect President Trump. Given the affinity that Boris Johnson had with Donald Trump this was a relationship that was going to be tested. As deep of a connection Joe Biden has with all of the World Leaders, this was in particular focus. All indications are on the side of Boris Johnson hes doing everything he can to get on the right side of President Biden. He was effusive when they sat down next to Each Other saying everyone was thrilled to have him here. In interviews with the bbc and other u. K. Media afterwards hes been similarly effusive saying his conversations with President Biden have been like a breath of fresh air. Now on the part of President Biden, hes of course eager to reelevate, to restore this, yes, Special Relationship just like he is eager to restore all of our alliances with western allies that were frayed under Donald Trump and so so far so good. But, jason, as you know, this is the third president ive now covered traveling overseas an especially when youre at these multinational summits, so much of what we have to do because everything is happening Behind Closed Doors is to decode these statements were getting, to perhaps overinterpret the Body Language were seeing publicly. So far every indication is the best indication of how much a difference a biden presidency is making is Boris Johnson, yes, as we said was perhaps closer to trump. In theory its been like the other World Leaders, borrowing bidens rhetoric. How often did we hear Biden Say Building back better. That was his blueprint in the campaign. For a biden who wants to show that america is back, youve played a little bit of that sound with macron as well in a quick Q A that happened after that, macron was asked, have you been reassured that america is back . Thats the other concern here is that is biden the aberration and is trump the aberration . He said, yes, were assured the u. S. Is back, jason. Hopefully the Special Relationship extends more than James Bond movies and the Magnum Ice Cream bars. Enjoy the beach out there. Now joining the conversation, juan neat at that talbot. Erin haynes, editor at large for the 9th And Dean abidiah. Thank you all so very much. Im going to get started today with what this summit actually means because, look, weve seen the united states go up and down with good and bad reputations. Dean, ill start with you. To the rest of the world after the abject terror of dealing with Donald Trump, do you think that theres much that Joe Biden can do to assure not just europe but africa and the middle East And Asia that america is actually taking a turn away from Explit Sit Police Sit White National Limb back to good old imperialism. These countries have no. I would say they can google whats going on and they watch the republican Partys Assault on democracy, criminalizing peaceful protests which theyve done and now their war on history just like trying to indoctrinate children. Thats not hyperbolic, thats what the Chinese Communist Party has done and the gop has taken a page. The World Leaders know what far right parties look like. They know what were dealing with. A far right white party. Theyre hopeful but even in america you think its over . Its not over. And continue with that idea. Juanita, were going to play some sound from eric swalwell. The Trump Administration was using apple an other resources to investigate Text Messages and emails of democratic members of congress. Were going to play this sound and i want your comments on the other side. I was notified, don, by apple that they did seize my records. Its wrong. This is what they do. They smear and they try and clear. Weve seen this through the Justice Department by Donald Trump, whether it was the reason he was impeached by trying to go after vice President Biden or just other efforts through the muller investigation. I support chairman shivs call for an Inspector General report into not only this conduct but other conduct that was corrupt by Donald Trump. So, juanita, we Find Out that the previous administration was literally spying on members of congress, hopefully probably trying to get some sort of information it can use to black mail them. What does that say about trump, we know it was terrible, but about the Department Of Justice and what we may need to do today to hold some of the previous members of the Department Of Justice accountable for what they were doing in the past administration. Look, this just confirms that sessions and barr served as trumps attorneys and they weaponized the doj for whatever trump wanted. All i can keep replaying is the exchange from Vice President harris, then senator harris, has trump suggested you investigate any political individuals . He played dumb. What do you mean suggest when we know trump tweeted about these types of things. So what they did is weaponize the doj and they did it not only for to dig into Phone Records of members of congress but their families and children in some cases and that is the authoritarian behavior that oddly would not surprise the american public but definitely confirms that trump was abusing his power. Youre right, there are still people in the doj who were part of these biweekly briefings where they talked about these investigations and what that says to me is that Merrick Garland is getting all of the tea from them. Tell me what you did, when you did it and once this is all investigated they absolutely need to be held accountable because Merrick Garland, we know he follows the rules, but i also need him to clean house so that this does not continue under his watch. I want to follow up with that with you, erin. So Merrick Garland gives a speech this week. Hey, were going to do things about Voting Rights. We care about Voting Rights. I thought it was a nice speech. I didnt hear anything specific that he was going to do. It gave me real susan collins energy. I am concerned about Voting Rights. From what youre hearing on the ground from writers and activists and Voting Rights individuals across the country, how have people responded to what Merrick Garland has said . So far this has not been a great week for the doj and looking like a progressive turn from what juanita correctly pointed out was basically the Arm And Fist of Donald Trump in the last administration. Yeah, jason. Well, look, with so much attention on the dw7, some of what happened in Merrick Garlands speech may have gotten lost in his speech yesterday. One thing he did say was they were going to be expanding the civil Rights Division which i think did hearten some of the organizers and activists who i talked to who are looking for avenues of redress through the federal government, especially because the for the people act is certainly waning in congress right now and its unclear what the future of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act is going to be in the fall. And so, you know, for africanamericans in this country historically the federal government has been a place of redress. Right. The State Level has been trying to block people from access to the ballot and with the access of section 5 with the Shelby Versus Holder decision, section 2 of the voting Rights Act, proactive Justice Department is what a lot of folks see as possibly the way to prevent a lot of the actions that these states would like to disenfranchise marginalized communities. So, you know, certainly all eyes turn not just to the Attorney General but to gupta and Kristin Clark now that they are in place at the Department Of Justice to see what they are doing because that is certainly what a lot of the black voters, organizers, activists that i talk to say is what they voted for and fought for in november. So, erin, i want to stay with you as the official journalist on our panel. On friday the Pulitzer Prize Board awarded a special citation for courageously recording the murder of George Floyd highlighting the crucial role of citizens in Journalists Quest for truth and justice. I want your thoughts. Do you think that that is a worthy award . I mean, look, obviously what she did changed the world but is this an indicator that it took a Citizen Journalist to spark the protests. Im so glad you asked me about this because we wrote about this i wrote about this for the news. Its on our site right now because this was an act of citizen journalism, right . We know as journalists we give a voice to marginalized communities and that is what Darnellla Frazier did. She walks by the scene of Derek Chauvin and those three officers kneeling on George Floyd. After shes able to get her younger cousin in cup foods, she doubles back. She at that time was the Loan Witness to what she was seeing and what does she do, she pulls out her Cell Phone and begins to document that, to bear witness to what she saw was an injustice. She didnt know George Floyd but what she saw as she testified earlier this year was that She Saw Somebody suffering. She saw somebody in pain and she knew it wasnt right. So certainly as journalists and as somebody whos long covered racism as part of my journalism career, what she did absolutely felt like it was within the tenants of our profession and so it was certainly encouraging to see the Pulitzer Board bestow her with not only this recognition but also the Cash Prize that goes with this honor. On friday the first ever Muslim American became a federal judge in the united states. He served two tours in iraq. Dean, ive got to ask you, first off, its still drives me nuts when were in 2021 and were still talking about firsts. The idea that we got the first Muslim American judge in this country in 2021 is crazy and your thoughts about the level of justice thats been denied to Muslim Americans prior to this point. Jason, it only took 243 years. Im not sure why youre making the point about it. Im so impatient. By 2150 you might have a second muslim judge. President obama did nominate a friend of mine to be a judge. Mitch mcconnell never let it come up for a vote. Im not sure the gop would have confirmed a muslim judge at that time. He was a magistrate before this. Were moving up in society. It mabs us proud. We look back and go, why you would have the government surveil us where we work, where we dine, where we pray . Theyve done so much to us. Finally we have someOne On the other side going, thats unconstitutional. Thats wrong. For our community, were very ecstatic. Very proud. Next up, jason, to get more of us in the society. Muslim boy band. Going to call it shiski bab. Me and Eamon Javers and Ali Velshi will tour. He does have front man energy. I can see that. I want to understand yes. I also want america to understand, 20 of american muslims are actually africanamerican. Lets be clear also about how many different kinds of people this is a change for. Erin haynes will be sticking around for the hour. Thank you juanita and dean as usual. President biden is in the u. K. The united states, ive said before, were back. The u. S. Is back. President bidens promise that america is back, back for who . To being a beacon of democracy on the World Stage is a hard sell. And attacks on the right are proliferating across republican led states. Three out of ten republicans believe Donald Trump will be reinstated as president this year. And when trump is not held accountable for encouraging a violent mob for trying to overturn a republican election. This kills a bipartisan commission hoping to investigate the attack. Joining me to discuss the state of america democracy, dr. Sarah kinzador and author of hiding in plain sight. Thank you both for being here. Im going to start with this pew poll. We have a recent poll that comes out asking whether or not the united states is still a good example of what america what democracy should be. And ill start with you, sarah. What does it say that 57 of people responding saying that america used to be a good example of democracy but now it isnt . Well, it shows that 57 of people are paying attention, but i think what we need to look at are the weaknesses that allowed our country to deteriorate so badly during the trump years to begin with. The reason our institutions were able to be corrupted is because they were already weak going in. Whats happening now with the biden administration refusing to enforce accountability, refusing to investigate things like Trumps Reaction and handling of the covid pandemic, the January 6th attack on the capitol, the fact that he was a kremlin asset, i dont think that thats necessarily going to restore faith, either domestically or globally in the u. S. As a paragon of Representative Democracy and justice. Exactly. It occurs to me in any other country in the world that has been watching america for the last six months alone, its like there was an attempted coup and the guy that you found responsible for it is happening out in florida and No Ones been held accountable. I want to ask you this, this idea that america used to be an example of a democracy and now isnt, when was this place ever an example of democracy . When large numbers of people, especially black and brown people, were denied access to the vote . Do you think that even that Response Sort of reflects a problematic understanding of this Countrys History . Absolutely. This is specifically a crisis of white liberalism, right . So fascism is completely clear where it stands. Its been standing in the same place. Republicans are completely, you know, in Lock Step with fascism. Its most recent iteration Being Led by trump here, right . Right. But the crisis is really among the white liberals who have to con front this fact that we cannot have democracy in the united states unless it is extended to everyone. And so you Cant Address the crisis of democracy without specifically addressing Race And Racism and that is where the Fault Line really exists. And along those lines, we have some recent statements from raffensperger and his wife who was Secretary Of State in georgia where they are getting Death Threats, Death Threats for simply doing their job. You know, bri, youve done Activist Work in South Carolina where your life has been in Danger And Everything else like that. What does it mean that now conservatives, people who have supported trump are now having their lives threatened even as the larger party itself turns a blind eye to the increasing dangers of white nationalism in this country . Well, its not surprising at all, and Thats Part of what is frankly frightening about the fact that, you know, even as republicans face these threats they are still willing to march along, you know, this direction with trump. But its also important for everyone to recognize that this is what happens as fascism takes over. They are not feeling the threat as acutely as people like myself, black and brown activists have felt for some time. It will come knocking at your door. That is what is so frightening about it. Sarah, weve been talking about internal threats to American Democracy. Now lets talk about an external threat to American Democracy. I want to play some sound from an exclusive Interview Nbc has with Vladimir Putin. Id like your thoughts on the other side. When President Biden is asked whether he believes you are a killer, he said, i do. Mr. President , are you a killer . Translator within my tenure ive gotten used to attacks from all kinds of angles and all kinds of areas and under pretexts and reasons and different Caliber And Fierceness and none of it surprises me. As far as harsh rhetoric, i think this is an expression of overall u. S. Culture. Sarah, all World Leaders are killers at some level or another. Theyre in charge of armies. What does this kind of response from Vladimir Putin tell us not just about his positioning now but perhaps what hes willing to do and what he might be committed to do under the u. S. Administration . It shows hes very adept at using american television and media for autocratic flaunting. Trump was his asset and the Trump Administration was a trans national crime Syndicate Masqueraing as a government. The kremlin was a key part of that. This is links between mafiosos, autocrats worldwide. Now that his asset is removed from power, his primary concern is having the american public for getting that happened. His great route is to leverage media to issue these kinds of threats. Its aided by structural threats like the major cyber attacks that the kremlin has been levying against the u. S. Through proxy organizations, but the biden administration needs to be much more aggressive about this, much more assertive about stating our values, hitting the oligarchs where it hurts, following the list of oligarchs that shut be hurt. Those are pragmatic things President Biden could do instead of having a summit with putin that putin will use as a Grea Pr Coup for its entire agenda. If you ever feel passive, if you ever think its time to Sit Down, please follow the Time Lines of either of these women and they will wake you up every day as to what the challenges are that the country is facing. Gig economy workers like uber want you to believe working for them will bring in the cash. A man cannot live on Side Hustle alone. One Food Delivery Driver named Smithson Michael went viral for sharing his experience. You know, i wish people knew what it was like to deliver uber eats, doordash or those companies. I just spent an hour driving around for 1. 19. I mean, would it hurt, yall, to tip us, throw Us 5 . I got 1. 19 and 2 from the app. Whats that . These are essential services. I just wish people knew what it was like. I wish they understood what it was like to drive for these services. Uber eats has not commented. Dorothy brown is joining us and author of the whiteness of wealth. And doreen warren. Cochair of the economic security project. Thank you all so very much. This is an issue near and dear to my heart. I have a lot of students in this Gig Economy spending more gas than theyre getting back. Dr. Brown, i want to start with you. Theres data out that shows 69 of these Food Service drivers are people of color, are racial or ethnic minorities. What does that mean about the appeal of these apps and the desperation of communities of color for flexible or affordable work . It means if we had better options we wouldnt be doing this. No one wants to drive around for 1. 19 and 2 on an app. The people benefitting are the shareholders and ceos of these companies who lobby to make sure that these Gig Workers are not treated as regular employees but independent contractors which really hurts the workers. Dorin, there was a study last year that talked about the fact that, you know, when we initially got Uber And Lyft, it was the idea this is going to democratize everything. It counter balances some of the racism that we saw with taxi cabs. What were seeing is studies have shown prices are actually hiked when people are trying to move into black and brown areas with lyft and uber. I mean, are these sort of Gig Economy Jobs Part of our racial Justice Fight . Absolutely, jason. It is always about racial justice linked to economic and gender justice. Just to go back to the principles. Listen, all work has value and all working people have rights full stop. Every person who works should have a Living Wage and have safe working conditions. The fundamental right to get together with people in working conditions. What we know is these company ceos, particularly at uber, lyft, many others, lets include walmart and amazon, by the way, you cant let them off the hook, they are buying politicians to aid and abet their efforts to make more profits. In the state of california in 2019 they said these independent contractors who work for the Gig Employers should be employees. Right. What did Uber And Lyft do . They spent 200 Million for a Ballot Initiative to basically take away the rights of workers. 200 Million. Think about that. What is behind that . Who does that serve . Not the workers and not especially workers of color. Dr. Brown, i want to add to this. What would be some of the challenges . I go down The Street, even in the middle of this pandemic, you know, and you see that car that has like four stamps in the window of all the places they work for, lyft, uber eats, grub hub, postmates. What are some of the structural challenges that Gig Economy workers face if they ever try to unionize . Is it just because theyre all treated as independent contractors as dorian mentioned or is it because its very hard for them to realize they have common concerns . Well, its Coming Up against a wellfunded company, right, that have lobbyists and workers dont have will beyists. When they try to form unions as weve seen with amazon, the company engages in really severe antilabor practices. So its hard you know, its a David And Goliath instance where david had a better shot than the workers do. And something i want to add to this. There were a lot of commercials, ive seen them in d. C. And different places, that talk about the fact this isnt just affecting the people doing deliveries but oftentimes these Gig Economy jobs, Delivery Services take a huge chunk out of small restaurants, right . Cut into their profits. So its not just hurting people on the front end, its hurting people on the Back End as well. I want to put up this data. Nbc cant confirm all of this information from propublica but they have an initial report that large numbers of multimillionaires in this country are not paying taxes. Nbc news has not independently verified the information. Propublica is not des closing how it attained the tax information. Theyre not saying anyone did anything illegal. I want to make sure we make this clear. What are you alls thoughts that the people behind these companies, are possibly Red Wings were not sure, possibly paying negligible taxes. Well start with dr. Brown. Its obvious we need systemic overhaul of the tax laws. My book talks about how the Tax System advantages rich white men and disadvantages black men. And its no surprise that the top highest earners who are rich white men, i will point out propublica didnt talk about the Race Angle but its everywhere in the story, they are paying very little taxes in tHe System. The He System was designed by rich white men for other rich white men to pay less in taxes. What a surprise. Dorian . There was a story that showed one or two workers require the government to survive. We should be angry that we are subsidizing through the government the low wage business model, yes, you and i pay our taxes. All of us pay our taxes but were supporting the wealthy few getting richer. This has racial and gender dimensions in terms of equity. Right. When i think of the average driver, most of these people have been its almost like for profit colleges. Theyve been suckered into the commercials. All you have to do is get your Honda Civic out there. You could make enough to put your kids through private school. Very rarely do people make enough money to get ahead. Very quickly. Dorian, if you were in a position of power, if you were brought in as a business Ethics Consultant at one of these Gig Economy companies, uber or lyft, whats the first thing you would tell them to change to make them more human centered or equitable . Respect the fundamental rights of all people and workers first and foremost. Many of the gig Workers Cant even access bathrooms at the restaurants where theyre picking up deliveries. So theres like a Dignity And Justice issue here. Secondly, we have to change the rules of the game. Theres the pro act in congress in terms of providing workers the right to join together. There are all the Tax Policy reforms that Professor Brown has outlined in her books. Theres the range of policies. Boosting unemployment insurance. The expanded child tax credit, stimulus tax checks. These are things that allow people to survive and guess what, it gives them power to say no to bad jobs which in a competitive marketplace employers should be competing for workers and, therefore, should be raising wages and offering decent benefits. Want people to come to work, pay them more, treat them better. Thank you so much. Much appreciated. Coming up later, a lot of big guests on Alex Whit reports. She said, val, never grow tired. Unlike some in washington, i never tire of standing up for what i believe is right because No One is above the law. Im running for the united States Senate because of two simple words, never tired. Former police chief, former impeachment manager and democratic Val Demming has found her hat in the ring for the Senate Seat putting this race at the top of list of races to watch during the midterm elections. To discuss were bringing in Erin Haynes and Fernand Armaandi and im so excited to are this segment, not because were going to do any handy capping, because i want to get into raw numbers. Fernand, were going to start with you. Val demings is an impressive politician. She has first om viv energy. Everything about her is fantastic. You know the numbers in florida. What is she up against in trying to knock out Marco Rubio, who is an established senator and at one point was considered a president ial contender . Well, jason, i think youre right. Lets start with the good news and the Bad News first for Val Demings. The good news is the democrats could not get a better candidate right now. As that video paid testament to, shes an exciting, charismatic candidate that the democratic base is going to love and shes also a tireless campaign worker. Weve seen her in her previous campaigns. The Bad News is that while he may be an international Punch Line and regarded as a bit of a clown by his colleagues and many people across the country, Marco Rubio is still an international Punch Line and clown who has high name i. D. In florida and speaks perfect spanish which is important because to your point, florida is a state where the hispanic electorate we have seen over the last 20 years really is super important in determining State Wyatt outcomes. Thats even more so in south florida which is why Joe Biden didnt come nearly as close of capturing the state as they would. So because Val Demings is going to have that as a bit of an advantage, she needs to take advantage of starting this campaign early and making sure she has a very visible and robust presence all throughout the state but especially eat into those margins of hispanic voters that rubio is going to have as an advantage coming in. Speaking of high profile candidates, i want to turn to you, stephanie. I want to bring up this poll about a race that not enough people are talking about, a special election to replace marsha fudge in ohio, the ohio district 11. Lets take a look at this. Its an internal poll, i want people to be clear, its an internal poll from Nina Turners Campaign saying shes got 50 of the vote. The next closest competitor only heart 15 . As a Numbers Guy i i will say this, its a positive poll for Nina Turner, but anytime i sigh more than about six or 7 undecided, i tend to have questions. 21 in the internal poll are undecided. So what are we looking at here . A very highname candidate, but still 21 of the voters are saying, hey, look, im trying to find somebody else. This is first, jason, a very important race. I do think smart people are paying attention to. Nina turner has high name i. D. , shes been in a variety of offices throughout her career in northeast ohio. This is a race between two women. I know thats the internal polls Nina Turner put out was that chan that will brown was only 15 , but i can tell you shes got a lot of support in the suburbs, a lot of support among the jewish community here, when is prevalent in northeast ohio. Nina turner, which i think there is truth to her poll, is polling looking very good when it comes to Cleveland And Akron, especially in the usual are not areas. You know, this is where were going to be who can continue to get their name out there. I dont think its all sum up for Nina Turner. I think she still has a lot of work to do, but chan shall brown is on her Shontel Brown is on her heels. A lot of tames when we say stacey abrams, it became and now Shontel Brown, a head of the cuyahoga county party, and Nina Turner known more nationally. She had some issues with Joe Biden. In the democratic sort of downballot places, in the regular democrats in northeast ohio, are any of these national issues mattering . Or are they more focused on, hey, who is the person whos been here, and. I can definitely tell you that Nina Turners strategy is one where i think a lot of people thought she was going to come out of the gate as a bernieite, but shes had a message thats resonated to Cleveland And Akron voters, because shes talking about the issues we care about on the ground. Shes not touting a berniefirst message. Shes touting a cleveland, an 11th congressional District Message first. I think that bodes well for her. I think its out of what people were expect to go hear from Nina Turner, and i love that she actually has an ad out with her grandchild where shes talking about education, talking about Health Care, and talking about the economic challenges that so many not just those who were in lowincome households, but we have a struggle with the middleclass families and working families here to be able to have enough. I think her message is really resonating, because shes talking a Localfirst Perspective in both Cleveland And Akron. This is a large district, so shes make he presence known. Speaking of local races, errin, were going to put on the errin 3000 hat. Now we have former atlanta mayor kasim reed doing a comeback. I dont know if we can call it a comeback. Hes been there for years, hes been talking about crime and all sorts of other difficulties. What does it immediate to have kasim reed back in the race for what might be americas last Functioning Chocolate City . Well, this lace just got so much more interesting. I live no Atlantas Mayor races. I have covered several of them in my career. I covered Mayor Reeds first and second run for mayor. Those were both very interesting. I covered the race for mayor bottoms in 2017, where, you know, Mayor Reed had handpitched Keesha Lance bottoms as his successor, rode for her hard, and really torched all of her challengers in a Vitt Vittry vitriolic race, so quite a change of tune for Mayor Reed in terms of mayor bottoms, and what he thinking of her performance, which is not unprecedented mayor jackson, the first black mayor of atlanta actually ran for a third term after he had served two consecutive terms. Its not unprecedented, but certainly Mayor Reed was mayor before he turned 40, was somebody who a lot of folks felt lie he kept the city safe. Crime is a huge issue in atlanta, especially in the last year with this pandemic. So for folks who thought he did a good job on that, you know, you know, he is somebody that they may be willing to support kind of his prickly personality, which certainly rubbed some people the wrong way, to say the least. He raised well over half A Million in his Birthday Bash earlier this week. I think that is a strong sign of the support that still may be out there for him meteorology atlantans who may still be on team reed come this fall. We have one new candidate and two possible throwbacks. Thank you so much.
