Do you feel pressure from mr. Trump . I have no comment, sir. I have no comment. Thank you, sir. Many would like to hear what he has to say, instead of a no comment. People would love to get any comment or denials or whatever he feels is true about the allegations. But what you just saw is what is the most legally prudent course, say nothing in public when you have an Open Grand Jury probe grinding on. Weisselberg and trump, they make all the big money decisions, and one Senior Trump Organization official just went under oath. Prosecutors scouring and the pressure all part of an effort to turn that cfo you just saw into a cooperating witness. Good to see you both. John, you heard it there. No comment from someone who looks like he is still adjusting to just how much legal and public pressure there will be on him, the cfo. Enormous. Theres a triumvirate. These three men were very close, trump, weisselberg, and mcconney. Only if he doesnt Tell The Truth does he get in trouble. In depositions in 2015, weisselberg said he handled these expenses daily. Trump would either ask him directly to send money for some purpose or other, but weisselberg said he much preferred there to be a clearance by memo for any substantial amount that was transferred. And he or trump would check that off. Thats a really tight link. This is a man who is handling accounts payable, accounts receivable. And id say this guy is a blockbuster witness. He could do it alone. They would like to have weisselberg, but maybe they would like to have Weisselberg Standing there with trump. Bringing this heavy hitter in this early is a substantial statement, i think. I appreciate that, john, because this is one of those times where a couple of weeks ago if somebody heard, another quoteunquote trump investigation, what will really happen . How far will it go . This is now hitting the people who donald trump says make all the money calls. And who he has previously said hes loyal to. If youre a skeptic of donald trump, you may note that loyalty sometimes comes with other baggage. If youre a supporter, you may say, okay, great, all the guys hes tight with are in the Grand Jury Box. But this is from the trump think like a billionaire book, where he said, hes doing a terrific job. He looks out for my bottom line as if the money were his own. John . A strong statement. And that tells you, any big decision, hes going to be standing there dealing with them. And trump, if trump is asking him directly to do something, he may have as few people knowing about it as possible. But the problem with any financial transaction, the check continues to exist, its copied a million times, there are all these things to corroborate things that mcconney may say. If youre going to have two different values, we have the transactions involving the payoff for the lady in waiting that was a campaign violation, but also probably has tax implications. You have a number of things. This is a pretty terrible storm that they find themselves in, and theyre surrounded by documents and records. So thats dangerous for a defendant. Yeah. Thats where the grand jury is going, and legally, either theyre going to build enough evidence in that Grand Jury Box with the documents to go somewhere or not. This is one of those stories, were going to likely get an ending. Politically, juanita, part of my job is to repeat the reasonable sanity and facts of what should be normal or not. If former president obama were under serious criminal investigation months after leaving office for how he conducted himself or his business, or if Close Associates were in a grand jury, there would be all kinds of coverage. It think it gets lost, what does it say politically and nationally that the standard bearer of the Republican Party is in this much sauce . Honestly, ari, it says business as usual, right . Trump had lawsuits against him, cases against him the whole time he was president. Hes had these investigations, and multiple institutions trying to get access to his tax returns. After two years, new york just got access. Youve had so many different allegations, whether its Sexual Assault allegations, payments of hush money, as john mentioned, to ladies in waiting, so artistically. None of it deterred the Republican Party from sticking by trump, this is their king, and theyre standing with that for the 2022 midterms, theyre still following every Direction Trump gives them, whether its removing cheney, backing up the big lie. Whether its the insurrection or any allegations about trump, theyre sticking by him. And that will not change. Hes still a major fundraiser, someone who draws their base, riles them up, turns them out. So republicans, for the sake of selfpreservation and fear are sticking by trump. Because i think the other thing is, any type of allegations against him dont stick with his base. Theyre still going to show up and turn out for him. Theyre still going to be riled up by him at rallies. Thats why theyre sticking with trump. Its all selfpreservation and about undermining our democracy still. You mentioned the bases enthusiasm. Part of that was built on the idea that hes a successful businessman. This is a legal proceeding, but its also looking at whether he had a hardcharging approach to getting profits, which is fine. Or whether he was defrauding, stealing illbegotten gains which is not fine. Those are two different ways to get money. I want to play what Michael Cohen said. Take a look. The only few people in the Trump Organization that know anything about the taxes is mr. Trump, who knows everything about everything, allen weissenberg, the chief financial officer, don, ivanka, and eric. Those are your five. I think he could have added jeff. Exactly. Thats the other person. But let me press you, john, and say what happens if those tax returns, which this grand jury probe got, this one cy vance actually won. What if they say they interpret things as fraudulent, and the trump folks say, look, this was signed off at the time. The government of new york and the federal government had that information at the time. Its new to the prosecutor, but its not new to the tax authorities. What if they say, look, this was all signed off on before. Weisselberg as cfo, one of his responsibilities is what happens at banks. There are two different venues for this information. The bank is getting information, and the value of these properties is being inflated for the purpose of the loan. The irs is only getting the information that says the properties are valued at this amount. Which might be lower. So that, it would be a complex Mathematical Analysis to compare the years, and the values, and the bank applications. But this is a man who has built his business on debt. Hes the kind of business that the camel goes through the eye of the needle, to take a biblical reference. With trump, the biggest mistake he has, i think, is the arrogance. It remains to be seen if hes accurate that he can do whatever he wants. But the d. A. And a. G. Are bearing down on him. I think hes met his match. The feds are sitting back, i would say, cowardly, because they have the goods. And theyre not acting. I think they would like to have the state deal with it. I think the state may deal with it. And i think what is being presented to the grand jury, its not so much an investigation as a presentation going towards a point, a conclusion that they already know. They dont want to wait six months. I think well likely have it in three months, all of that is speculation. I think were on a track here that is unpleasant for trump to deal with. He opposed any reform to the fi filibuster, drawing heavy criticism. Manchin defending his chance as what he says is a push for more cooperation with mcconnell. But that doesnt make sense, even fox news Chris Wallace dismissed it. Senator mcconnell says hes 100 focused on blocking the biden agenda. Question, arent you being naive about this continuing talk about bipartisan cooperation . Im not being naive, i think hes 100 wrong on blocking all the good things were trying to do for america. And that is the whole point. If you think someone is 100 wrong, and you have the power to stop them, why wouldnt you . So this line of questioning continued on fox news, with wallace pointing out that manchins position appears to strengthen the republicans ability to do this. The question i have is whether or not youre doing it exactly the wrong way. Havent you empowered republicans to be obstructionists . I dont think so. Because we have seven brave republicans that continue to vote for what they know is right and the facts as they see them. Lets get into it. Im joined by Cornell Belcher. Good to see you. What did you think of that colloquy, as they say in washington . That was a really sort of telling interview. It points out the naive nature, or how problematic it is. We can all agree philosophically with senator manchin, that Voting Rights, protecting our right to vote, shouldnt be a partisan issue. But clearly it is a partisan issue, when you have one party relentlessly trying to in fact undermine the right to vote and set up a way to rig elections in the coming future. So it should be bipartisan. But it is very it should be bipartisan, but its very partisan. Its tantamount to, look, the chicken saying, we cant protect the chicken coop until we get the fox to come in and help us protect the chicken coop. Philosophically, i understand what hes trying to say, but its a headscratcher. And that would make Mitch Mcconnell the fox. Raising the question, what is fox news . They would want dibs on the fox role, i would think. Just im just being logical. I think they want dibs on yes, i think they would want dibs on the fox. Im trying to picture Mitch Mcconnell as a fox, which is kind of uncomfortable. Ill tell you this, to continue your wordplay. Chris wallace, the original fox news, seems to think that joe manchin is getting outfoxed by Mitch Mcconnell. Thats why this was so interesting. Hes saying, fine, senator. But now that Mitch Mcconnell has publicly said what all the liberals have said they dont like about him, hes a huge obstructionist. Dont you need to at least have the option to reduce the power of the obstruction tactic, whether for certain bills, or maybe for more bills. To take this animal analogy one step even further, perhaps hes just Playing Possum. Hes a pretty smart guy. He didnt get to being where he is right now, especially in a red state, without being a sharp guy. So perhaps hes putting all of this out there, and Playing Possum, and waiting for an opportunity, for Mitch Mcconnell and republicans to continue sort of pushing and blocking all this. And he can say, look, i tried to be bipartisan on this, i went out further than my party wanted me to. Ive taken arrows and slings and accusations from my party, and now hes in a position to push this in a different direction, because in fact he came out this way early on. So perhaps, perhaps he may just be Playing Possum. Maybe hes Playing Possum with the foxes. Hmm. I didnt know you were going to get this folksy. But Cornell Belcher has layers. I need to ask you about this liz cheney thing. Merciful for anyone who is still watching. Liz cheney is saying something that is getting noticed. And i think shes proven to be pretty straightforward about what is going on. Either this is true and its chilling about democracy, or some people will not believe her. Heres what she says people privately said to her. Ive had a number of members say things to me like, we would have voted to impeach, but we were concerned about our security. That you have members of the United States house of representatives for whom security, their personal security, their family security, their concerns about that affected the way that they felt they could vote. Cornell . We are officially in a banana republic, where, this is worse than putins russia. Where our elected officials are afraid to act because they fear for their own safety and security. This is a Slippery Slope and a dangerous place for america to be, when our elected officials will not do what they know what is right because they fear reprisals and for their lives and the lives of their family. This is a dark moment in american democracy, and i hope they can find the courage to do what many of them know is right. Yeah. Its striking what theyre confiding in liz chene. With republican officials basically going a whole different direction. There have been people who have been honest about january 6th, although thats a low bar. Senator mcconnell said it was an insurrection. But were seeing something accelerate. More and more conservative leaders rejecting the evidence of their eyes and ears, becoming a litmus test for them. Right now, we turn to a special fact check to swiftly shred ten of the emerging lies about these riots. Were not going to reair any misinformation on its own. Anything you hear will be played with the actual Documentary Evidence of what actually occurred. Number ten, the megaphone over at fox news with an alternative take on the insurrection. What happened today will be used to justify tripping you of the rights you were born with as an american. Obviously, this is a huge victory for those protesters. Reports that Antifa Sympathizers may have been sprinkled through the crowd. Number nine, alabama congressman mo brooks, who lied about who showed up. Today is the day american patriots start taking down names and kicking ass it could be any number of other groups, anarchists or what have you. It occurred to me that no one engaged in any violence as a result of my speech or any others. Number eight, congressman paul gosar, who says they were not violent. The truth is being censored and covered up. As a result, the doj is harassing peaceful patriots across the country. Imagine this, that you go back home once we conquer the hill, donald trump is turned to being president. Were storming the capitol its a revolution then theres congress ralph norman, who says what happened was wrong, but then lies about it being a mob of Trump Supporters. We can refresh your memory. 2 07, a mob of Trump Supporters breached the steps. I dont know who did a poll that its Trump Supporters. We want trump we want trump they wanted trump. They said so. Congressman gaetz trying the same ploy. Some of the people who breached the capitol today were not Trump Supporters, and in fact were members of antifa. Whose house . If you do not stand down, theres a [ bleep ] million of us out there, and we are listening to trump, your boss. They werent masquerading, they were the real maga deal. Now we have even more evidence that they were maga from the court filings. And number five, minimizing this, saying something happened, but it wasnt a president ially organized plot by misfits. So was january 6th in the direction of a mob of misfits [ screaming ] the feds view that as way more than misfits. And our finalists, and it does get worse. During this actual attack, there were members of congress who tried to help Police Barricade the doors to the house. On your screen, you see republican congressman andrew clyde going shoulder to shoulder with armed officers. He was hailed by some at the time. But tonight, how does it look when you see that same person who faced that danger, likening it to an orderly tourist visit. What runs through his head given what he lived through, what he did that day, what hes saying now as he spews this garbage. There was no insurrection and to call it an insurrection in my opinion is a boldfaced lie. If you didnt know the tv footage was a video from january 6th, you would think its a normal tourist visit. Tourists dont take the capitol by first. And congressman gohmert, lying about the fact that many of these trespassers were armed. Theres no evidence as has been said on january 7th, that this was an armed insurrection. Armed meaning with firearms. There were no firearms. Here are just some of the weapons that were confiscated or being seen used. A baseball bat, fire extinguisher, a wooden club, a spear, a taser. And the lie that many Top Republicans know this was terrible, thats why they have to lie about it. So congressman ron johnson claims the people on team trump who attacked Police Actually respect police. I knew those are people that love this country, that truly respect law enforcement. Would never do anything to break a law. Hang mike pence hang mike pence coming in at number one is the person who summoned the original Crowd To Washington and fed them lies about his failed campaign. Were going to have fight much harder. Youll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong. Frankly, we did win this election. We love you, youre very special. Those special people took him literally, they still do. And while trumpism does have less power now, this attack was by a slice of the electoral minority against the electoral majority. And working to grow an alliance of liars who know better, with people who may not. Theres nothing novel or new about this type of threat within this system of government. To return to some other bars from george orwell, he also wrote that to even see what is in front of ones nose needs a constant struggle. And he had tips, he recommended keeping a written record of important events, and counseled clarity and courage in the face of fascists. And our last word, we have one more idea for you tonight, as we deal with this as a nation. Because its not going away yet. In summation of this fact check, lets just hear a little bit from the police who were so brutally attacked and their families. Lets hear from the people who had to live through the reality, not the lies, but the reality of the results of the violent insurrection, who are further disrespected in public by the lies you saw tonight from some of these elected republicans. I mean, the story is that these emails show the Chief Of Staff to the president meadows trying to get the acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen to get Cuckoo Investigations going where supposedly italy was trying to interfere with our elections and they were trying to gin up the states. And the hal load Justice Department, you know, side with these cuckoo trump theories. And that just illustrates what these folks are all about. Theyre not about respect for institutions and they did not give one whip about what that would do to politicize the Justice Department and fortunately the acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen appears to have done the right thing and refused all this, but thats got to be the subject of congressional hearings and Jeffrey Rosens got to testify and hes got to tell everyone what he knows and this is benghazi times a million and we had so many hearings about that, we need a hearing about this. Yeah, and it gives context to what was going on with january 6th because it shows how behind the scenes in secret these were real effort and these were not to save face and email fundraising and this was in their minds, deadly serious.
