Hopes to accomplish. It may be the wildest qanon Conspiracy Theory weve ever heard and a former trump official push for a former investigation of it. Well explain. Plus, some folks are just learning about Tulsa Race Massacre. Where else dont we know about americas history and how will we learn it . From nbc news World Headquarters in new york im Joshua Johnson. Welcome to the week. So i dont know if you see it this way but i think joe manchin might be the most powerful senator in washington right now. This morning, he made news on election reform that could mean the end of one Voting Rights bill. In an oped for the charleston gazette males, Senator Manchin wrote that he will vote against the for the people act, however he added that he does support the john lewis for Voting Rights act. He also made clear that he will not support abolishing the filibuster. The senator appeared on fox news to explain his objection to the for the people act. I think its the wrong piece of legislation to bring our country together. Theyre not supporting that because i think it would devise further. So whats the difference between the two bills . Well take a look. Weve broken down into some Bullet Points for you. For the people act is pretty wide ranging. It would ban Partition Gerrymandering and standardized Voting Procedures across the country. The john lewis Voting Rights act is more narrowly focused. It will require states with a history of Racial Discrimination to get permission or preclearance before they change their election laws. If it came down to filibuster, 60 senators would have to agree on holding a final vote. South carolina congressman reacted to Senator Manchins position this morning. I dont know if im smarter than what im smart to know the difference between a filibuster and a vote. And what hes doing is continuing the filibuster, the vote rather than allow them to limit the debate and thats what hes trying to do. Please mr. Manchin. Vote to limit the debate and have an up and down vote on whether or not or could i have a continuation over the discussion. So can something be worked out . He seems to hold out hope that come the republicans will find some common ground. We have seven brave republicans who continued to vote for what they think is right not worrying about the political consequences. Yeah but the democrats are ten votes short of breaking the filibuster so are there at ten gop votes to support the john lewis Voting Rights act . Lets bring that to political reporter tsai hookup. Or are those ten votes there . No joshua. There is one republican vote to pass the john lewis Voting Rights act and thats the summer kasky of alaska theyre unlikely to before anything like that legislation thats written Primarily In The Park because it will be predominantly republican led states that would have the Voting Rights violations in the past and that kind of gets the same box when they gutted a portion of it so as long as the outlook remains the bill Senator Manchin has been very vocal and holding out hope that some kind of a bipartisan solution can be reached. Is there anyone else whos echoing that hope or is he the only one saying this . Murkowski is. Shes calling on her republican colleagues to go along with that but the interesting thing about this joshua is it has a bipartisan tag on it. Its barely bipartisan because theres only one republican legislator on it but as part of the way to understand joe manchin he wants to be able to go home and say hes trying his best to reach across the island if there is one he can point to, remember this is senator from a state that donald trump won by nearly 40 points. Its one of the two reddest states in the entire country and its one of the reasons because heselect reluctant to go along with the priorities of his own party. Speaking of that optimism lets play one more clip from Senator Manchin fox news this morning. Just watch. In the first five months of this year weve operated more about how this senate is supposed to operate in a bipartisan way than ever since ive been here in ten years. The senate is working. So how much would the senators agree that its working . While the democrats would strongly disagree overwhelmingly that the senate is working. Lets start with what joe manchin is talking about and Chuck Schumer has operated very differently than the republican previous Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell sure has allowed open debate on a number of bills including a modest rod or infrastructure bill and hate crimes bill Combat Violence against Asian Americans and on the bigger ticket items i think progressive senators would say the chamber is not working because its been logjammed on many many issues at this point in terms of lacking a way forward and gun control, these negotiations are happening to break that including a commission to investigate the january 6th attack on the capitol and they couldnt get through with that. Thats been seen to change the minds by joe manchin and that has not worked. What does this mean for the biden agenda more broadly . He lashed out this week at Senators Manchin and Kirsten Cinema the way they thought republicans than with their former democrats. Firstly that isnt true. They just for more with the republicans than most of the other democrats than with republicans but the to your question joshua is this affects a normal amount of bidens agenda. Every piece of agenda thats regulatory nature, including that the democratic leader plans to bring up like lgbtq rights, equal rights for women, gun control registration thats been written to close the private Seller Loophole and Background Chips are about to run into the 60 vote threshold and theres more of a path and they are directly related to taxes and spending and thats why the Covid Relief Bill passed. The 1. 1 trillion package that passed earlier. Thats why infrastructure is high up on President Bidens agenda because it can get around the filibuster but the other items that i mentioned are unlikely to get to the president s desk and lasts long as the threshold remains. Thank you saw how could, portly starts us off tonight. The Voting Rights bills are a response to Voting Restrictions advance by republican state lawmakers. Those restrictions were prompted by baseless allegations of voter fraud. But learning more about how much support those allegations got from the Trump White House is the latest revelation comes from the New York Times about President Trumps final least in office. His Chief Of Staff reportedly pushed the Justice Department to investigate and Conspiracy Theories. The times reports the Acting Attorney General to examine the boat claim of election fraud. Those include a claim that italy used Military Technology to remotely switch trump both to biden votes. There is no evidence that acting attorney Jeffrey Rosen agreed to open an investigation. Ben collins points out that this came directly out of qanon Conspiracy Theories and he joins us now live to discuss it. Ben, i almost dont know where to start. This feels like conspiracy cause play and it is getting a little tiresome. What the hell is this . A good place to start is january six. If you woke up on january six and you really thought that donald trump was going to provide you with the proof needed to overturn the Election Results and thats why you went to the capital on january six one of the things thats probably going through your head is that the italians did it. And thats because were on watkins who a lot believe is cured and theres a documentary out there that hes cue it brings pretty good evidence. He was posting for the days before that thats some evidence that two things would happen. One that the italians plans this elaborate thing in the embassy and barack obama was involved. The former italian Prime Minister was involved. Its all eyes. Its buffeted by facebook videos. Its all nonsense. And then the other thing that you would have thought this morning was that mike pence and paul ryan were in on this whole thing to make it so donald trump could not be the president again. Thats based on complete lies that were invented by a troll to do people like qanon people. So those are the two big Conspiracy Theories. We know that donald trump knows who ron watkins is because he was retweeting him in the days before january six. So thats how that stuff got up that pipeline. It was one of the most pivotal figures in conservative media in the days before the six and thats how this became a cue thing. As q died off and run took his place that got to the president. I dont want to be too harsh about the people who believe these Conspiracy Theories because theyve been taken in by something that appeal to something emotionally within them thats very powerful and still quite misunderstood and i dont even think thats really the issue. The bigger issue to me at least is President Trump and the gop. Trump thomas he asked whether the senator believes donald trump believes this stuff or if hes just using it to his political advantage. Heres what senator blunt said. I really can analyze whether he believes it or not. Im sure he believes that in a Fair Election he couldnt have possibly lost. Then with the make of that . It doesnt matter if he believes it or not because hes using it to his advantage. Were countering was basically an authoritarian bullet right now which is culture war on the front and democracy was in the back. That democracy if the erosion of Voting Rights. Did you coined the Phrase Democracy Mullet . Are my ears deceiving me . Thats whats going on here right because in the back there are all these Voting Rights restrictions being passed throughout the country and being normalized and in a lot of ways its being hidden by these dogfights that people are having over these Conspiracy Theories in the front. And by the time 2022 comes around or 2024 comes around, i dont know if i agree with the fact that they can hand out Water Bottles of these and these voting places but something must be done about these italians working the election. Something must be done about this Critical Race Theory thats taking over a school. So that is part of the strategy right . Its to create so much doubt. Its the authoritarian playbook. People dont even know its true. By the time it comes around to vote it doesnt matter. Well how much of that is affected by their decision announced by facebook this week that donald trump will be banned from the platform for at least two years retroactive to when the ban happened in january . And then theyll reevaluate whether or not they can bring him back on the platform or ban him further, what about that . Sure in 2023 facebook will face a realization here whether he and ill say theyre really evaluate their tolerance for this and its unclear who the experts are about to talk to experts if they should allow donald trump back on the platform. Now donald trump you could have to outruns. You could play by the book in the months before that and trying to get back on the platform and dont do anything inciting violence or saying lies about the last election but whats more likely is the idea that if you can ramp up the rhetoric in that time it doesnt relieve the much of an option and i think this organ a face and a couple of years is there will be a Countdown Clock to 2023 right when this rams back up and the Trump Campaign if that exists biden will have to make a decision about how much to play by the rules. Nbcs ben collins. Ben i appreciated thanks very much. Still to come, some things are its not the same as having anxiety and clinical sense that how can you tell . Will answer your questions in tonights dear doctor. And this week could, joe biden will make his first overseas trip as president. Well show you whats on the agenda. Coming up. On the ground in guatemala silly tonight for his First International trip for the Biden Administration. She arrived late after initially turning around to switch planes because of a tactical issue. Vice president harris is trying to strengthen diplomatic relations between the u. S. , guatemala and, medics ago. Its part of her work on the Migration Crisis at our southern border. Joe biden will also depart for his first president ial trip abroad on wednesday. Theyll head to the g7 summit in england. The groups agenda could be packed, including Pandemic Recovery efforts and the climate crisis. Mr. Bidens trip takes place in the u. S. As it deals with a series of Ransomware Attacks by a russian hackers. This week, nbcs reported that the administration is treating the attacks as a National Security threat. One possible response, a military cyber offensive. The president will also stop and brussels to meet with eu leaders and attend a nato summit. Its a highly anticipated meeting thats in geneva on the 16th and as if that wasnt enough. The probably keep an eye on israel to see how the new Coalition Government is coming along. They could vote on the Unlikely Partnership this wednesday. Lets discuss all of this with a former director of the National Security council and former spokesperson for the u. S. Mission to the united nations. Good to see you again, let me just start with a trip overall. What is the overall goal of this First International trip . Is President Biden trying to send one big overarching message or does he have a bunch of disconnected to do is on his to do list for this trip . There is definitely a theme here and the theme is reinforcing Democratic Values and reinforcing our alliances which is really a direct contradiction to help President Trump approached his first year and the reason is the theme is the message hes trying to convey is if he we want to tackle the worlds challenges right now coming from iran and russia were gonna do it much better with the united front. And we should not by the way that the secretary general, and the head of nato is scheduled to meet at the white house with President Biden before he takes up on this international trip. Hes going to be meeting with Vladimir Putin on june 16th in geneva. His recent Ransomware Attacks have prompted a lot of human cry for congress. Some of them talked about what needs to be done as raimondo, how does that factor into the president s trip . Sure well this trip has actually been strategically plans and its not that you have first that g7 in the United Kingdom where youre gonna have countries theyre united on that have the shared democratic value and then the nato summit. One of the sticking points is nato is is its existence, the fact that it continues to include members to run up russias border. So biden is going to be going into that inner summit and meeting up in geneva and he will be coming off of those trips with both private and public messages of these alliances. Hes going to allow him to go in there with a stronger position, because no matter what Talking Points he gives and im certain with the oped that he placed in the Washington Post is hes gonna be saying its the kind of activity that were not gonna tolerate, right or interference in elections. Your cyberattacks, your condoning of the cyberattacks. Meddling in ukraine obviously. The list could go on. And carrying that message after trips where he shows the united front and shows that there is a wall that may not be the right turn. When there is a group together of likeminded countries that are ready to face russia together through those challenges, allows him to convene that all the stronger. Whats your sense of the g7 summit. Theres a lot that the world is trying to get done in the last few years with the covid pandemic its kind of change the way the countries kind of Work Together and kind of been working together. Whats on the agenda for the g7 that we should keep an eye out for . Actually theres an interesting point here. There are four items on the agenda, mainly the pandemic and addressing that globally and addressing Health Security for countries all over the world. The Global Economy and climate change. To me was very notable is whats not on the agenda. And what you dont have our your classic National Security issues like how are we going to address iran and north korea for particular right now. And to me with that says is that these countries, the seven of them believe that in order to best tackle the wide range of National Security threats that we face and other threats they have to be able to address their domestic issues and these bigger crises first and its only once they address those and enhance their standing domestically and its a big Talking Point you here with the Biden Administration right, that theyre merging domestic and Foreign Policy. Their belief is that it for stronger domestically and if we can compete with china and we have our infrastructure under control and if we have everyone back stated we can run up National Security challenges and thats what im seeing for the g7 as well. What about israel . I want to know where your senses are of how the president is going to deal with the situation. We should note that the Israeli Parliament has not completely improved this yet so theoretically it could change. Its not a Done And Dusted done deal but it looks like knit dolly is going to be the Prime Minister at least for the next two years. Whats your sense of how President Biden is going to do with that . Thats what it looks like. I agree with you. Things are very shaky, it could go either way in israel but i agree with you that i think the parliament will approve this government and that Naftali Bennett will become Prime Minister and what happens there is that presents a key opportunity for President Biden to develop a Good Relationship with him because there isnt really one right now. And the relationship with netanyahu soured toward the end of president obamas term and the reason for the Turning Point for that is really when netanyahu went and addressed the u. S. Congress on the iran deal basically throwing president obama under the bus and he didnt even inform president obama that hed be doing it. So things are really sour there right now. I dont think anyone should question his commitment to israel. His policies towards israel. However the relationship could be better and so theres not opportunity there with Naftali Bennett to have that relationship and its important because that weighs heavily on our middle east Foreign Policy objectives. How we faced counterterrorism, and threats from iran, dealing with the gulf and so on. The issue though is i dont expect policies to change too heavily because at the end of the day, Naftali Bennett is against the iran deal and hes also against the two State Solution with the palestinians. That is a question more people ask themselves this week, 100 years after the Tulsa Race Massacre. Tom hanks is also asking that in a New York Times oped. Mr. Hanks as he considers himself a lay historian. According to his articles, he only learned of the massacre last year. A white mob storm tulsas greenwood neighborhood, a Wealthy Black Enclave known as black wall street. We dont know exactly how many people died, hundreds most likely. We know that it displays hundreds of black residents. If this years centennial taught us anything, its that hang time hanks is not. Alone some learned about it in 2019 from watchman, many have just learned about it last week. What else might our American History textbooks be omitting . Joining us now is gillian raquel. Shes the staff writer for the western welcome to the program, good to have you. You wrote about some of the other things that arent well known that happen in North Carolina when a group of White Supremacists literally over through rosewood florida although the movie is somewhat fictionalized. One is the hope of sharing some of the stories today might change oh. I dont think people think these things are. One of the things that happened at tulsa this week, we had this name being checked everywhere with this Map Massacres that happened all over the country. North and south. Throughout history. And, for something being shared on the internet, its actually a pretty good meme. Its fairly accurate. The only thing i can that isnt accurate is thibodaux is slightly misspelled. It actually gets a whole lot of the racist massacres against black people in history. I will say, as good as this meme is, its not comprehensive. Its not exhaustive. There are many more that didnt even make it on to this map. Some of the ones we have written back at metropolis or the orange massacre, fort pillow at the end of the war. Evan nicer creek is the one i wrote about at the end of the silver will civil war. You can go back to the massacre of black people after matt turners rebellion. Its something thats been happening throughout American History. One of the things that chill some people as they begin to learn about this is that it feels like an onslaught. That if you grew up thinking one thing about American History, and then learning they killed black people here, they massacred them here, they lynch them on last year, they keep them out of government there, it can feel a little bit like the earth has spun off of its axis. What do you make of some of the pushback or not just that, almost the feeling of being drowned by some of this history that a lot of americans are just hearing for the first time. I mean, a lot of that is the failure of History Education for decades. Where people were taught an inaccurate version of history that didnt actually happen. This lost cause version of the civil war, and of Black America after the civil war, that so many people are still frankly taught. Certainly were not taught for most of their lives. When you learned something since youve been a kid, you hold on to those beliefs tighter, more tightly than if you had done later in life. So, to be told now actually, it wasnt a riot between black and white people that was an even battle, it was just a massacre of white people massacring black people for completely racist reasons. They said there were white supremacist, they did not act like. Heroes its a shocking thing to hear, that everything youve been told your whole life is actually a mythology. And depending on and we should know by the way that robert lee did not create this lost cause. Oh no. He wanted them to feel bulldozed. Oh yeah, he said put the flags away. Yeah. Put it away, over, were done. What is your sense over this and Critical Race Theory and teaching it in school or to restrict it . I personally dont see how its going to work. The sheerest way to get a young person to do something you dont want them to do, is to keep it away from them. Yeah. I mean, i will let the politicians and the historians fight over Critical Race Theory but, these massacres that a lot of people learned about for the first time this week, by the exact things that people would be presented from knowing if these laws passed. Its really a continuation of the same thing. People who were raised with this last cause mythology, and in the last few decades, things have been better. It would just be going back to a mythical virgin version that is not its just inaccurate. Not accurate. Speaking of inaccuracies, there has been some images going around facebook that i noticed are on black facebook and twitter that claim to share historical anecdotes but they are either only half true, or undefinable. This is when i saw online just today its as one fbi director said s one fbi director said all you have to do is to find that is not what he said google knee girl it sounds like something you wouldve said, but its false. If theres one thing i cant stand. Its something that aims to keep black folks angry and ignorant. Let alone being gullible on things you read on facebook, but i cant really describe mtv friendly language how mad this makes me. The push to not only teach black history, but to put false information in the minds of black folks to keep us matted our life. I dont know what to do with. It had to you see it . I mean, if you told the truth about the quote that they actually said the threat to actual National Security was the black panther party, its not a defense of cooper. We still know that he was doing the cointel pro. He was doing mass surveillance of almost every one of the Civil Rights Movement so there is no need to exaggerate history when the truth speaks for itself. Black folks, please dont fall for this on facebook and twitter. Dont fall for these memes that are an supporter. Find out for yourself, dont let people keep you angry in ignorant. Its too easy to get the truth. Julian rockwell of the Washington Post, thanks very much. Thank you for having me. Covid vaccinations are getting america back to normal. Nothing we discuss here can substitute for the guidance of your doctor and your specific situation. With that said, lets get into our first question from eric davis. Eric tweeted is it abnormal that i dont totally want to go back to the prepandemic life because ive liked the quiet and solitude . Of course this is aside from all the death and suffering that was real for so many. Doctor what would you say to eric . Joshua i would say to eric that what hes feeling is absolutely normal. As a matter, fact the American Psychological association has pointed out in one of their studies that 50 of people who are going back to work or to school are experiencing some sort of anxiety and we can only assume thats because theyre comfortable in their bubble. I mean we had to make an abrupt shift into social distancing and self isolating and so now to be asked to go right back to where we were before covid after adapting to social distancing is acting asking a lot and some people are driving that while others really enjoy it especially much younger people, they really want to go back but the older generation are comfortable and feel safe inside of the bubble theyve created. Well that kind of gets to the next question from victor from detroit. He has to travel for business. Victor wants to know how much is this rush to normalcy part of the problem . Its right there in the words joshua. The rush to normalcy. Everyone gets back to it in their own way. The previous out bursts will eventually get used to it and will adapt to being back out there but you cant rush people back in if theyre not quite ready but they can begin to prepare themselves by getting to the Grocery Store are much more often. Or getting to an outdoor cafe or working out outside. Jogging youre taking a walk with someone else so you can begin to prepare yourself but to it at your own speed. We know joshua little lot of people are still going to be Wearing Masks or they dont particularly have to do and theres nothing wrong with that but i think more and more were stuck will start to feel safer and begin to ease back in with a little less stress and heres anxiety. Another question heres another question from lava from lava mom. Mom. She tweeted, with having she tweeted with having social anxiety thats even worse after the pandemicn worse afte the pandemic well, for lava mom. Thats an absolutely great question. We have a lot of people prepandemic who had a social phobia and social anxiety. The most important thing she should do is go ahead and get her feet wet a little bit knowing that she has this preexisting condition, and knows whats the triggers are. When they start going off, again its important to get that professional help or if shes on medication, whatever it is it takes. I will say to you labeaume on, keep Going Forward but do it in your own time. Eventually, he will get through the social phobia and anxiety and get treated well with cognitive behavioral therapy. If you need medication, you could see a psychiatry sore psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and see if medication will help you. I have dealt with something similar, lava mom. One thing that help me is going out with someone that i trust know about when im dealing with. You dont have to go out by yourself, if theres someone you can go out with and say hey, this makes me anxious. We might have to cut out here soon so we have to leave after 20 minutes dont get mad. Just that comfort of knowing someones with you in the past, it has made a huge difference. Doctor, what about that lie, the lie between feeling anxious, and having anxiety. Those are two different things. Everyone feels anxious time to time, is there a hallmark or when the two things people should look out for and see if what they need for they have needs medical professionals . We all have anxiety. Part of being a human being. Sometimes its, good places us in the flight or fright situation we need in order to be able to step up and perform. But if it becomes a situation of where you get so anxious that you cant put one foot in front of the other, or you feel you are totally overwhelmed by your circumstances, then reach out to a buddy. There are breathing exercises you can do, meditation. If you need it, there is therapy. Its easy to get these days. Especially online. One last question. T question or dealing with at accuse were figuring out . Offer your elbow. Or you can say i would love to shake your hand, but its taking me a little while. Let me blow you a kiss, or give you the elbow, or a high five as long as you are reaching out, thats part of the social custom its absolutely okay. Many of us are afraid of the handshake right now.
