This morning joe manchin made news on Election Reform that could mean the end of an Voting Rights bill. Senator manchin wrote that hell vote against the for the people act. However, he added that he does support the john lewis Voting Rights act. He also made clear hell not support abolishing the filibuster. The senator appeared on fox news to explain his objection to the for the people act. I think its wrong piece of legislation to bring our country together. I think it would divide us further. What is the difference . Take a look. We broke it down into Bullet Points for you. The for the people act is pretty wideranging. It would ban partisan Jerry Mandering and standardize Voting Procedures across the country. The john lewis Voting Rights act is more narrowly focused. It would require states with a history of Racial Discrimination to get permission or preclearance before they change their election laws. If it came down to a filibuster, 60 senators would have to agree on holding a vote. They reacted to his position this morning. I dont know that im smarter than senator manchin. Im smart enough to know that the difference between an up or down vote and a filibuster. And what he is doing is continuing to filibuster the vote and the debate rather than allow shumer to limit debate and set a date. And thats what were trying to do. Please, mr. Manchin, please set a date and have an up or down vote on whether or not were going to have a continuation of Voting Rights in this country. So can something be worked out . He seems to hold out hope that republicans will find some common ground. We have seven brave republicans that continue to vote for what they think is right. Not worrying about the political consequences. Yeah. But the democrats are ten votes short of breaking a filibuster. Seven wont cut it. So are there ten gop votes to support the john lewis Voting Rights act . Lets put that question to nbc National Political reporter. How does it look right now . Are the ten votes there . No, there is one republican vote and that is lisa mcyou could ski of alaska. Theyre note close to ten republican votes. Theyre unlikely to be for anything like the legislation that is written currently in part because it would be predominantly republican laid state that would have the Voting Rights have a lagss in their past. And that kind of gets congress, that same box that its been in since 2030. Senator manchin is vocal in holding out theep a bipartisan solution with be reached. Is there anyone else echoing that hope or he is the only one saying this . Murkowski is. Shes calling on the republican colleagues to go along with that. But the interesting thing about this, joshua, is that the john lewis has the bipartisan tag on it. Its barely bipartisan. This is only one republican legislator onboard. But thats part of the way to understand joe manchin. He wants to be able to go home and say he is working with republicans. He is trying his best to reach across the aisle. If there is one, he can point to that one. Remember, this is a senator from a state that donald trump won by nearly 40 points. Its one of the two reddist states in the entire country. Lets play one more clip of senator manchin. In the first five months of this year we operated more the way the senate is supposed to operate in a bipartisan way than ever since ive been here in ten years. The senate is working. How much would his fellow senators agree with that assessment that the senate is working . Manchin is talking about the process and the way that bills come up. Chuck schumer has worked differently than mitch mcconnell. Schumer allowed open debate in amendments on a number of bills including a modest Water Infrastructure bill and including a hate crimes bill to combat violence against asianamericans and those have passed. But on the bigger ticket items, i think progressive senators, vast majority of Democratic Senators say the chamber is not working because it has been logjamed on many, many issues at this point in terms of getting a way forward and including gun control. The negotiations are happening to break that including a commission to investigate the january 6th attack on the capitol. Even that couldnt get through. That was seen as some progressives as a Rallying Point to change the minds of holdouts like joe manchin. It has not worked. What does this mean for the biden agenda more broadly . He lashed out this week at Senators Manchin and the senator of arizona. Saying they vote more with republicans than with their fellow democrats. Firstly that, is not true. They vote more with republicans than most of the other democrats vote with republicans. But to your question, joshua, this effects an enormous amount of president bud ens agenda. The every piece of legislation that is regulatory in nature, including several that senator schumer, the democratic leader plans to bring up including equal pay for women, lgbtq rights, gun control legislation of the tup that is written in previous years to close the loophole for background checks. All of these are about to run head long into the 60 vote tresh hold. There is no pass. For economic issues, there is more of a path and theyre directly to taxes and spending. Thats why the covid19 relief bill passed. Thats why infrastructure is high on President Bidens agenda. It can get around the filibuster. Other items that i mentioned, they are unlikely to get to the president s desk as long as 60 votes remains. Zbl thank you so much. That is our political reporter starting us off tonight. Now the Voting Rights bill is in congress are a response to Voting Restrictions advanced by republican state lawmakers. They were prompted by baseless allegations of voter fraud. The were learning more about how much support those allegations got from the trump white house. The latest revelation comes from the New York Times about President Trumps final weeks in office. His Chief Of Staff mark meadows reportedly pushed the Justice Department to investigate election Conspiracy Theories. Thats according to emails the times reviewed. The times reports that mr. Meadows asked the Acting Attorney General to examine boj claims of election fraud. Those include a claim that italy used Military Technology to remotely switch trump votes to biden votes. There is no evidence that then Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosenen agreed to open an investigation. And nbcs ben collins points out that this came directly out of qanon Conspiracy Theories. He joins us now live to discuss it. Ben, i almost dont know where to start. This feels like conspiracy play and it is getting a little tiresome. The what the hell is this . Good place to start is january 6th. If you woke up on january 6th and you thought he was going to provide you with the proof needed to overturn Election Results and thats you went to the capitol on january 6th, onest things that was going through your head is that the italians did it. And thats because a guy named ron walk ins who believe is q. There is a documentary out there that claims hes q. Brings some pretty good evidence. He was posting for days before that that, you know, some evident is going to be proven that two things happened. One, the italians did, like, planned this elaborate thing in the rome embassy and barack obama was involved. Its all lies. You know, its buffeted by facebook videos. Its all nonsense. And then the other thing that you would have thought that morning is mike pence and paul ryan were in on this whole thing to make it so donald trump could not be the president again. That is based on complete lies that were invented on purpose by a troll to dupe people like qanon people. Those are the big Conspiracy Theories. And we know that donald trump knows who ron watkins is. He was retweeting him in the days before january 6th. So that is how that stuff got off that pipeline. Ron watkins that may be q was one of the most pivotal figures in conservative media in the days before the 6th. And thats how this became a q thing. As q, the poster died off, ron took his place and that got to the president. I dont want to be too harsh about the people who believe the Conspiracy Theories. Theyve been taken in by something that appeal to them emotional that is very powerful and still misunderstood. I dont think that is the issue. The bigger issue to me is President Trump and the gop. Trump had a really smart question on roy blunt of missouri. A republican senator. Something ive been wondering too. He asked whether the senator believes donald trump believes this stuff or if he is just using it to his political advantage. Heres what senator blunt said. You know, i really cant analyze whether he believes or not. Im sure he believes that in a Fair Election he couldnt have possibly lost. Ben, what do you make of that . It doesnt matter if he believes it or not. Hes using it to his advantage. Will culture war in the front, democracy erosion in the back. And that democracy erosion is like erosion of eroding race. Hold on. Did you coin the phrase the democracy mullet . Yeah. I mean, yeah. Thats whats going on here though, right . We have, you know, in the back, in the background there are all the Voting Rights restrictions being passed throughout the country. Being normalized. Its because of the dog fights that people are having because of the Conspiracy Theories in the front. By the time 2024 comes around, people willing say i dont know if i agree with the fact that the people cant vote and hand out Water Bottles at these voting places. But, you know, something must be done about the italians rigging the i election. Something has to be done. So that is part of the strategy. To create so much doubt, so, so much doubt. This is the authoritarian playbook. How much is affected by the fact that donald trump will be banned from platform in two years. And then theyll reevaluate wlnt they can bring him back on the platform or ban him further . What about that . Sure, in 2023, facebook is going to face the real decision. If they say theyll reevaluate this, talk to experts, unclear who the experts are. But theyll touk to experts if they still allow donald trump back on the platform. If youre donald trump, can you sort of play it by the book in the months before that and try to get back on the platform. Dont do anything like, you know, insighting violence or saying lies about the last election. But, you know, what is more likely, martyrdome. It is the idea that, you know, if he ramps up the rhetoric in that time, it doesnt leave them much of an option. Thats what were going to face in a couple years is there will be a Countdown Clock to 2023. A return to normal is making some folks anxious. Maybe you are too. Maybe thats not the same as having anxiety in a clinical sense. How can you tell . Well answer your questions in tonights dear dr. Gracias, San Francisco. Thank you. [ speaks native language ] lets keep Making A Differene together. Vice president Kamala Hair Sis in Guatemala City tonight. Shes on her First International tripp for the biden administration. She initially turned around to change planes because of a technical issue. Vice president hair sis trying to strengthen relations part of the southern border. Hell head to the g7 summit in england. The Recovery Efforts and the climate crisis. There is a series of ransom this week nbcs ken delaney reported the administration is treating at tacks as a National Security effect. They met with leaders and attend the nato summit. It is the highly anticipated meeting with putin. There is it a Coalition Government the way theyre coming around. This is the department this wednesday. Lets discuss all this with the former director at the National Security council and former spokesperson for the u. S. Mission to the united nations. Good to see you again. Let me start with the trip overall. What is the overall goal of the First International trip . Is there a big overaching message or a couple of to dos . No, there is definitely a theme here. The theme is reinforcing Democratic Values and most importantly reinforcing our alliances which is really a direct contradiction to how President Trump approached certainly his first year in office. But also his foreign trips. They were not about necessarily reinforcing the allies. The reason his theme is because the message he tried to convey is if we want to tackle the world challenges right now, pandemic, climate change, Global Economic recovery, National Security issues coming from iran or north korea or russia, then were going to do it much better with the united front. We should know that secretarygeneral of the head of nato is scheduled to meet at the white house with President Biden before he takes off on this international trip. He is going to be meeting with putin on june 16th in geneva. The recent Ransomware Attacks prompted a lot of human cry from congress. Some of them were on the Sunday Morning Shows today. How does that factor into the president s trip. This trip has been very strategically planned. You have first the g7 in the united kingdom, right, where youre going to have countries that are there. Theyre united on sharted Democratic Values. And then the nato summit. It got brought up to russias border. So biden is going to that summit and he will be coming on to the trips. I mean both with private and public messages of the alliances. Its going to allow the long term position. No matter what Talking Points he gives, im certain based on both the oped that he put on the Washington Post this is not the type of activity that were not going to tolerate, right . Youre cyber attacks, youre con condoning the cyber attacks. And carrying that message after trips where he shows this united front, he shows that there is a wall that may not be the right turn. Which there is a group of like minded countries ready to face russia together. Theyre trying to allow him to convey all the stronger. What is your sense of the agenda for the g7 summit . There is a lot the world is trying to get done internationally in the last few years and with the covid19 pandemic, its kind of changed the way that countries kind of Work Together and kind of Work Together, what is on the agenda for the g7 that youre keeping an eye out for . Theres an interesting point here. There are four items on the agenda. Mainly, addressing that globally, addressing Health Security for all countries all over the world. Economic recovery and there is a change. To me what is very notable is what is not on the agenda and what you dont have are your classic National Security issues like hey, how are we going to address iran and north korea. What that says is the g7 countries, the best of them. The best way to tackle the wide range of the threats we face and other threats, they have to be able to address their domestic issues and these bigger crisis first. And its only once they address those and enhance the standing domestically. Thast say big Talking Point you hear from the biden administration, right . Theyre merging domestic and foreign policy. Their beliefs is if were strong domestically and compete with china, we can tackle these National Security challenges. What about israel . I wonder what your sense is of how the president is going to deal with the situation . We should know that israeli parliament, the knesset has not formally approved this yet. So theoretically, it could change not quite as Done And Dusted done deal. But it looks like bennett is going to be the Prime Minister at least for the next few years. What is your sense of how President Biden is going to deal with. I agree with you that i think the parliament will approve this government. And it will become Prime Minister. What happens there is that it prevents a key opportunity for President Biden to develop a Good Relationship with him. There isnt really relationship. And netanyahu soured at the and the main reason is the Turning Point for that is really when netanyahu went and addressed the u. S. Congress and threw president obama under the bus. He didnt even inform president obama was doing it. Things are really solid there. President biden i dont think anybody should question his commitment to israel. His policies to israel. However, the relationship could be better. There is an opportunity there with bennett to have a Good Relationship. That weighs very heavily on our other middle east foreign policy. Thats how we face counterterrorism, threats from iran, dealing with the gulf. And so on. The issue is that at the end of the day, he is in favor of the two state solution. Lots to walk through. I appreciate you making time for us. Good to see you. Thank you very much. Thank you. Up next, The Tulsa Massacre is something we were not taught in school. How much do we really know about americas history, thats is the question that more people ask themselves this week 100 years after the tulsa race massacre. Tom hanks is asking himself that in a New York Times oped. He considers himself a lay historian. He only learned of the massacre last year. A white mob stormed tulsas greenwood neighborhood, a Wealthy Black Enclave known as black wall street. We dont know how many people died. Hundreds, most likely, we know that it displaced thousands of black residents. If this years centennial taught us anything, it is that tom hanks is not alone. Some folks learned about the massacre in 2019 from watchman. Many may have just learned it last week. What else might our American History textbooks be omitting . Joining us now is gillian brockel. A staff writer for the Washington Post history clubbing theyre along the tulsa membership including a coup that happened in wilmington. There is also the one that burned down the town of rosewood, florida. The basis for the movie rosewood. Although the movie is fictionalized. What is the hope in terms of what sharing these stories today might change or accomplish . I dont think people realize how often these happen. We have the meme showing up, massacres happened all over the country, North And South throughout history. And its, you know, for something that is being shared on the internet, its actually a pretty good meme. It is fairly accurate. The only thing i can find that isnt accurate is, like, some things are misspelled. But it gets a whole lot of the racist massacres against black people in history. But i will say, you know, as good as this meme is, its not comprehensive. Its not exhaustive. There are many more that didnt even make it on to the map. Some of the ones that we have written about at the Orangeburg Massacre In south carolina. Ebeneezer creek is one i wrote about at the end of The Civil War. Can you even go back to the massacre of black people that happened after matt turners rebellion failed. It is something that is happening throughout American History. I think one of the things that kind of chills some people as they begin to learn about this is that it feels like an onslaught. If if you grew up thinking one thing about American History and then learning they killed black people here. They massacred them here. They lynched them en masse here, they kicked them out of government there. It can feel a little bit like the earth has spun off of its axis. What do you make in terms of some of the not even push back but this almost the feeling of being drowned by some of this history that a lot of americans are just hearing for first time . A lot is the failure of History Education for decades, for people were taught an inaccurate version of history that didnt actually happen. This lost cause version of The Civil War and of black america after The Civil War that so many people are still frankly taught. But certainly werent taught the most of their lives. When you learn something, since youve been a kid, you think you hold on to those beliefs tighter. More tightly than if you have them later in it life. It wasnt a riot between black and white people, it was a massacre of white people massacring black people for racist reasons. They said they were white supremacists. They did not act like heroes. Its a very shocking thing to hear. Everybody youve been told your whole life has been a mythology. Well, and depending on we should note that robert e. Lee did not create this lost cause. You know The Civil War. He didnt let anybody he said put the flags away. What about the state efforts to ban it or restrict it . You dont see how theyre supposed to work. The surest way to get a young person to get them to do something you dont want them to do is keep it away from them. Yeah, i mean, ill let the politicians and historians fight over political race theory. The massacres that a lot of people learned about for the first time this week, theyre the exact things that people will be presented from if knowing in the past. So, you know, it really would be a continuation of the same thing. That people who are raised with the loss. Things have been better. It would just be going back. Its not only that it is just in accurate. Its just not accurate. Speaking of inaccuracies, there are images going around facebook that i noticed that are shared on Black Facebook and black twitter that claim to share historical anecdotes. This is one i saw online. Just today. It says when fbi director j. Edgar hoover was asked the sing the greatest threat to usa, he answered negro unity. Take that a minute to soak in. All you have to do is google j. Edgar hoover and see he did not say. That he was referring to the black panther party. It sounds like something he would have said. Its false. There is one thing i cant say is something that aims to keep black folks angry and ignorant. Let alone being gullible on things you read on facebook. I cant really describe in this in tv friendly language how angry this makes me. Put to put false information in the minds of black folks to keep us mad at our lot in life. I cant i dont even know what to do with it. I cant handle it. How do you see it . I mean, if you tell the truth about the quote that j. Edgar actually said the greatest threat to National Security was the black panther party, its not a defense of j. Edgar hoover. I mean, we still know that he was doing sur surveillances. There is no need to exaggerate history when the truth, you know, speaks for itself. Black folks, please dont follow for this okie doak on facebook and twitter. Do not fall for the memes that are unsupportable. Find out for yourself. Do not let people keep you angry he and ignorant. Its too easy to get the truth. Joining us now to answer your questions is dr. Jeffrey gardier. He is a clinical psychologist and associate professor. Doctor, welcome back. Thank you, joshua, for having me. Before we dive in, please remember, no one can die ago nose you from a distance. Nothing we discuss here can substitute for the guidance of your doctor for your specific situation. Lets ghet into our first question. Is it abnormal that i dont totally want to go to the prepandemic life because i like the quiet and solitude . Of course this is aside from all the deaths and suffering that was real for so many. Doctor, what would you say to eric . Well, joshua, i would say to eric that what he is feeling is absolutely normal. As a matter of fact, the American Psychological association has point out in a study that 50 of people going back to work or to school are experiencing some sort of anxiety. And we can only assume thats because they are comfortable in their bubble. We had to make an abrupt shift into social distancing and self isolating. To be asked to go right back to where we were before covid19 after adapting to social distancing is asking a lot. And some people are dreading that and others are really enjoying it especially much younger people. But the older generation are comfortable and feel safe inside of the bubble they created. That kind of gets to the next question from victor from detroit. He has to travel for business. Victor wants to know how much is this rush to normalcy part of the problem . Its right there to the rush to normalcy. Everyone gets back to it in their own way. The previous person asked the question eventually will dapt to being back out. There you cant rush people back in if theyre not quite ready. But they can begin to prepare themselves by going to the Grocery Store much more often. Or getting out to an outdoor cafe or working out outside, jogging or taking a walk with someone else. So you can begin to prepare yourself but do it at your own speed. We know joshua, a lot of people are still going to be Wearing Masks where they dont particularly have to. There is nothing wrong with that. I think as were out there more and more, well start to feel safer and begin to ease back in with the little less stress and anxiety. Heres another question from lava mom. Lava mom tweeted, with having Social Anxiety that is even worse after the pandemic, how do i know when i should push myself to go to an activity or to give myself a break and stay in . Doctor . Well, for lava mom, i think that is a great question. And we have Social Anxiety. The most important thing she should do is go ahead and get her feet wet a little bit. Knowing that she has this preexisting condition and knows what the triggers are. And when they start going off again, then its important for her to get that professional help. Or if shes on medication. Whatever it is. But i would say to you lava mom, keep going forward. But do it in your own time. And eventually you will get through that social phobia, Social Anxiety. We treat it very well with cognitive behavioral therapy. If you need medication, can you see a psychiatrist or psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and see what medications will help you. I will also note. One thing that helped me is going out with someone who i trust to know about what im dealing with. St you dont have to go out by yourself. If there is someone you can say hey, this really makes me anxious, we may have to cut out of here soon that we have to leave in 20 minutes. There is a way of knowing someone. Doctor, what about the line between feeling and shift. And having anxiety. Everyone feels anxious one or two times. Is there something to look out for to know if what theyre feeling does need the attention of a professional . We all have anxiety. That is part of being a human being. And in some ways anxiety is good. It places us in the Fight Or Flight situation that we need sometimes in order to be able to step up and perform. But if it becomes a situation of where youre so anxious that you cant put one foot in front of the other or you feel that you are totally overwhelmed by your circumstances, then, of course, reach tout a buddy as you said. That is important. Its about supporting the strategies. But there are Breathing Exercises can you do. There is meditation can you do. And if you need it, there is therapy and its easy to get these days, especially if you look for it online. One last question from twitter user. Gets to the etiquette issues. Theyre asking what is a good way to decline a hand shake . Ordeal with any of the Etiquette Cues before we go . Absolutely. You can say, quite simply, i would love to shake your hand but its taking me a little while so let me blow you a kiss or give you the elbow. As long as youre reaching out, we all get it. Many of us are afraid of that hand shake right now. I cant remember the last situation where you i blew someone a kiss but now im going to have to think about that. That is an option. That is an option. And now its set ill accept that, joshua. Thank you. Brotherly love. Good to see you, man. Thank you very much. Thank you, sir. You sent us some wonderful stories of how you practice self care. Well share a few before we go. Care well share a few before we go needles.
