Children. They are making their way to the border because of problems here. There are problems of hunger, problems of corruption, problems of crime, all systemic problems that date back actually decades. And so while in the last ten years the united states has put 1. 2 billion in guatemala, things have actually gotten worse here. Thats why people say theyre leaving. The relationship with migration is for every cup of coffee that you drink at a starbucks, some guatemalan is staying in guatemala and not leaving. Is that because they are earning enough money to stay here . They are linked to their plantations. They do not want to leave to the united states, thats for sure. And theyre investing in what starbucks is investing in in guatemala. So Gloria Estrella Gonzalez has been able to do this only because one in six people born in guatemala now lives in the united states. Her husband is there. How is it that he is able to allow her to stay here . He is sending the remittances the money that he earns. That he earns in the united states. He sends it to Guatemala And Gloria is investing on the fields to produce Coffee Beans that go to starbucks. So when you see u. S. Dollars coming into a country like this versus the private industry, where do you think the best solution is . Invest in people. I mean go to the root problem. Go to the people who are leaving. Go to the people whose corruption, they feel it in their hearts, who are not being capable of educating their children, not capable of getting health, infrastructure, so what we need to do is invest in people. Senator Joe Manchin taking the heat after his new comments about his continued opposition of getting rid of the filibuster and his intention to vote against a major piece of legislation aimed at protecting Voting Rights. Watch this. I think its the wrong piece of legislation to bring our country together and unite our country. Im not supporting that because i think it would divide us further. Please, mr. Manchin, vote to limit debate so we can have an up or down vote on whether or not we are going to have a continuation of Voting Rights in this country. And Senator Manchin would rather preserve Jim Crow on some outdated theory of bipartisanship. So manchins nostalgia for bipartisanship comes at former President Donald Trump actively leads an effort to make it harder to vote around this country. An effort fueled by the Big Lie and the Things Trump continued to spew this weekend. I love whats going on in so many states, 41 different states because they saw what happened in this last disaster and they dont want it to happen again. So while Senator Manchin is getting the Heat Today from fellow democrats, hes not the only member of the party standing in the way of a potential end to the filibuster. Senator Kyrsten Sinema is as obstinate as manchin on the issue, but gets far less attention. The arizona democrat sparked a flurry of Progressive Furor which she defended it alongside senator john cornyn. The idea of the filibuster was created to those who came brus. To those who say you must make a choice between filibuster and x, this is a false choice. The way to fix that is to change your behavior, not to eliminate the rules or change the rules. Are you confused . So are the democrats. Moderates like Sinema And Manchin have found themselves in a unique dilemma. Straddling both sides of the political aisle they seem increasingly unsure of who to appease, their party or constituents. Sinema has instead done neither. Congressional democrats have barely forgiven her curtsy as she voted against a 15 Minimum Wage and her constituents in arizona are not too pleased either. Support from voters has weakened, even amongst democrats. 30 of them who say they view her unfavorably. Meanwhile the chairman of the Labor Federation told the 19th News he can barely get ahold of her, with me to discuss the congresswomans complicated political position is sarah jones, author of the article what does Kyrsten Sinema want . I guess i could start with that question, what is driving, i guess, her decision to stick with the filibuster alongside Joe Manchin . Its a great question and theres not an easy resolution because on the absence of any justification shes left us to wonder what does she care about, what does she actually want . Is she really just in office for herself or does she care about passing legislation. She does have this nostalgic view of the filibuster that Senator Manchin seems to share, which is unfortunate. Heres what you write. Through her defense of the filibuster, if she wants to keep the filibuster in place why should she accept this political fallout especially when you show numbers like we just saw where her support is waning amongst her constituency. She may truly believe it the way Senator Manchin may truly believe what hes saying about the filibuster but i think thats the only explanation that makes sense. She does believe this alternative version of history that she is putting forth, but it is an alternative version of history. How does her political dilemma compare to Senator Joe Manchin . Senator Joe Manchin is, i would say, from a more conservative state. I would argue that Senator Sinema has a little bit more Wiggle Room that shes currently not exercising. I think its hard to argue that her constituents really wanting to keep the filibuster at this point. Democrats have a short window. Anything you think at this point in your writing of her that can make her change her minding . Were talking about a senator who was photographed wearing some interesting profanity jewelry, so i dont know if anything can change her mind at this point. She seems pretty determined and willing to double down. Sarah jones, thank you for joining us. Appreciate it. To talk more about this dilemma democrats face and how to deal with party outliers, i want to bring in Anita Kumar and amanda renteria, ceo of code for america. Welcome to you both. Appreciate you joining on a sunday afternoon. Anita, lets start with you. You just heard from sarah about is there anything that can change Sinemas Mind and it sounds like the answer is no. Weve heard manchin all over the morning shows earlier today and it sounds like hes not budging either, especially when you read that oped when it comes to the Voting Rights act. What are democrats at this point to do . Yeah, its a really great question because both senators, although their personalities are very different, Joe Manchin is much more outspoken, Kyrsten Sinema doesnt talk much about her private views. They both seem to be very set in their ways on this. In fact the more they get pushed about it, the more they push back. They dont much like some of the criticism that theyre getting. I do think that youre going to see as we get closer to the midterm elections the democratic party just like the Republican Party is going to need to show what they stand for. So they need to show that they can pass some legislation and some policy, and theyre all going to be both sides will be very eager to do that. As we get closer to those elections, theyre going to need to show those and see what they can pass. You know, were pretty far still away from that. Were still in the beginning of Joe Bidens Term so perhaps theres still time for that. But i think one of the reasons that youre seeing Joe Biden and the White House continue to negotiate on infrastructure and some of these other issues is because we very well know where these senators are. They are in constant contact. You may not see Joe Biden pick up the phone every day and call Joe Manch in, but the teams and staffs are very much in touch with each other. As Joe Biden entered the White House, he had the same thinking talking about the filibuster, talking about bipartisanship. He wanted to strike a bipartisan deal across the board. He wanted to strike a bipartisan deal when it came to covid relief. He wasnt necessarily able to do that. But it seems at this point from all reporting the president has seen the Writing On The Wall. This is a very different senate from the senate that he was in a heck of a long time ago. The manchins and sinemas have not seen the Writing On The Wall and still see the senate as a utopian body, which its not. Its a completely different body than it was even two years ago. Thats right. In all fairness i think Sinema And Manchin are actually talking to republicans quite a bit, standing with them, doing those kinds of things, which means they have a little bit more patience than the biden administration and a lot of democrats as well. What i will say, though, is what you are seeing out of this administration is a wisdom that both understands the need to show the american people that youre willing to work across the aisle, that youre willing to wait for good ideas, but that youre not going to wait so long that its going to hurt the american people, and thats the part thats really important here is where this conversation goes now must go to the american people so that people understand that if you have things like the filibuster not in place or if its becoming a blocker to getting good jobs, if its a blocker to an infrastructure bill, if its a blocker to what people need right now, then you have something to work with and perhaps thats when Manchin And Sinema move in a direction that will allow the senate to work again but not until we get there. What are you saying the american people should do about that . I think the biden administration, i think weve got to go to people and say, listen, this is what is happening on the ground. We arent going to have fair voting. We arent going to have infrastructure bills. All those jobs that people are ready to get into postpandemic, they arent going to be coming around unless we can move legislation in the senate. So in a way, turn out to vote in the midterms so we can have more control in the senate. Thats right. And people need to be talking with them right now and saying we want to move now. Right. I think there is a reality, democrats have to have a message of what did you do with this power you had. Anita, i want to read for you from manchins oped. And what i found interesting about part of his oped is that he talks about wanting to strike bipartisan legislation when it comes to Voting Rights. What he doesnt talk about, though, is some of what they are combatting when it comes to Voting Rights or lack thereof is completely partisan. The reason why the legislation could feasibly have been passed in texas is because of democratic legislators. Whether it is State Laws that seek to needlessly restrict voting or politicians who ignore the need to secure our elections, partisan policy making wont instill confidence in our democracy, it will destroy it. As such, congressional action on federal voting Rights Legislation must be the result of both democrats and republicans coming together to find a Pathway Forward or we risk further dividing and destroying the public we swore to protect and defend as elected officials. He doesnt address the fact that some of his senate colleagues support the restrictions that have been put in place across the country. Yeah, thats right, he doesnt address those but what hes saying is not very new. Its something hes been saying for months now. Since the beginning of this term, since january. Which is that he wants he thinks that he understands his constituents and how west Virginia Voters want him to behave and he wants to push bipartisanship. Thats what hes saying here. Youre right, hes not acknowledging all thats happening across the country, but his role here is to say, look, lets continue to try to work in a bipartisan way. The problem here, of course, is that those bipartisan negotiations so far really havent gotten him anywhere. On a very rare occasion has something passed through with bipartisan support. On issues that the democratic party is looking to push on guns, on immigration, on the Minimum Wage, on infrastructure, the president s number one priority at the moment, theyre not getting anywhere. So at some point the president and democratic majority has to figure out what the next step is. How do they proceed or do they not get anything done . What is the real political risk here, amanda, for Manchin And Sinema . That the party is in a different place than they are. They are looked at as hurting the american people. This is particularly true in arizona where you do have mark kelly, who is out there saying this is good for people in arizona. And if that looks like a split, that is a very difficult place for sinema. In the same way that people in West Virginia are seeing that they arent getting Infrastructure Jobs or arent getting what they need, then it probable causes that manchin is the blocker to that. Last year We Saw Qanon Head to washington when Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Bobert won their house seats. Before and after she entered the capitol building, greene has pushed the baseless belief that q has peddled conspiracies with staged mass shootings, and encouraged Donald Trumps Big Lie among a multitude as you can see other falsehoods. And green and bobert prepare for next years reelections, a new and expanding crop of Qanon Supporters are throwing their hats in the ring for congress. So far 19 people who back Q Conspiracy theories have declared House And Senate runs. All but one of the candidates are republican. One is running as an independent. Joining me now to talk more about this and the chance that these candidates actually have is david gilbert, a reporter at vice news. David, thanks for joining us. Great to see you. This is fascinating stuff. Before we get into a larger conversation, i want to play a bit of sound of someone who you spoke about in your piece, Joe Ray perkins who is running for senate in oregon and she attended the January 6th riot but denies entering the capitol building. Lets listen. I talk to people about q and ask people if they follow q because im curious. Theres quite a few that do. The ones that dont, i tell them about q. Well, Check Out Q, tell me what you think and i give them a link and they Check Out Q and do their own research. When the people that commented on the Twitter Post was culling it a cult. I dont know any cult that tells people to go out there and do their own research. Terrifying. All right, david. So talk to me more about this and also some of the other concerning contenders here. Yeah, it is quite concerning, yasmin. I think probably the most concerning thing is what many people may not know is last time around in 2020 there was 97 qanon candidates running for congress. But 18 months prior to that, the Number Wasnt this high so were actually ahead of the game already when it comes to the 2022 midterms, so theres more people which obviously shows instead of dissipating, people seem to be emboldened by it. 14 of these candidates have run already and 12 of them have lost but theyre running again because they believe that they are going to be elected. They have pretty good reason to believe that they might be elected because the Republican Party is doing very little, especially at the leadership level, to disavow qanon outright. And obviously Donald Trump is leaning into the Conspiracy Theories that qanon are sharing, especially around the recounts in arizona thats happening at the moment and the one possibly in pennsylvania. So these candidates that are out there, you know, theyre probably thinking why not . Why not at least show or pretend that i support qanon because it may get me some votes. Were talking about across the country. Its florida, its arizona. You mentioned some of them in your piece. You talk about how republicans are not disavowing these Qanon Conspiracy theories. Theyre actually avoiding it. Some top republicans avoiding questions about qanon when theyre asked on the public stage. Have you looked into why . Its very hard to know because if you look at qanon, its the Conspiracy Theory is deranged. The fact that Donald Trump is waging this Secret War to unmask democratic elites and hollywood elites who are running a global sex trafficking ring. You know, it makes no sense. Yes, the leadership i guess because when Donald Trump was in office he didnt come out publicly and disavow qanon, in fact he called them very nice people. And i guess the Republican Party is still controlled to a large extent by Donald Trump. Theyre quite worried if the leadership comes out against these people that it may inspire backlash from trump. Its hard to tell, because there is absolutely nothing here to endorse or to get behind. So it should be quite easy for the republican leadership to disavow qanon. I think some of the polling on this is fascinating. This is a poll saying Qanon Believers who believe covid vaccines have microchips, that covid was manufactured in a lab, 85 . How dangerous is it, the possibility that we could have up to a dozen or so more Qanon Believers, supporters in washington . Its massively dangerous, i think. I dont think its really been taken seriously enough. I think the research that really matters to highlight this, they did this for the 2020 cycle as well is really important to keep track of because i think a lot of people felt when trump left that qanon would die out. What weve actually seen is that its continually morphing and continually changing. New conspiracies are dreamt up every single day and they become part of the qanon ethos. And the Big Lie, the audit in arizona is currently what Qanon Supporters are absolutely focused on. So i think the fact that so many people feel now that embracing Qanon Isnt going to hurt their chances of getting elected in 2022 is really dangerous. David gilbert, we could talk about this for another hour because i also want to talk to you when we can and when we have more time about michael flynns role in all of this emerging seemingly in a way as the leader it seems in the qanon movement, which is terrifying and fascinating as well. But now along comes cal osha, the agency that sets standards in the workplace, and theyre saying something a little bit different under guidelines that were passed in the last week. Still subject to final approval, but whether you are vaccinated or not in the workplace, you will be required to wear a mask unless everyone in the room is fully vaccinated. Employers will be required to have n95 masks available for their unvaccinated employees. They will relax some of the social distancing rules, the physical distancing rules, get rid of some of the barriers in exchange for that mask requirement. California has been among the strictest states throughout this pandemic and has been turning in some of the best numbers in the country. They say that under these rules, workers freedoms will be controlled by their fellow workers decisions to get vaccinated, not by their own choices. They do say everyone should make the choice to get vaccinated. Now again, these new rules are subject to final approval by a state administrative Law Panel and Governor Gavin Newsom could weigh in and decide to change them. What do you make of kind of this disparity, right, this trump on the stage Last Night of course pushing all these ridiculous lies that you know hes just built up in his mind over the last couple of months, not necessarily having a platform to talk about them. Its the same old stuff that he said over and over again. And hes got cheers, right . And then youve got the Georgia Governor getting booed over and over again because he wouldnt, as they thought, had the power to overturn an election. Yeah, its really something to watch people who claim to be the, quote unquote, Law And Order party boo their own elected officials for following the law and certifying a free and fair election as has been done since the beginning of our country. Donald trump Last Night reminded me of a Wornout Act who is past his prime and just kind of playing those Oldie Goldie hits to just a devoted but small fan base. I dont think that there is a longevity here for Donald Trump that can extend much longer. I dont think that this is sustainable for the Republican Party to continue following this dementia in action because they already know this is a losing recipe. This is something that they saw who knows, who knows, because none of them are speaking out. None of them are speaking out. Republicans arent speaking out, theyre all falling in line. Ali vitali was on the air as we were previewing Donald Trump talking Last Night. And she talked to supporters who said i want to see things looking forward. She played another sound of the same reporter saying listen, the end all, be all possible would be if Donald Trump announced he was going to run again in 2024. No one is speaking out. How can you confidently say that this is going go away . Because theyre going to find out what continuing to double down on something that failed them in 2018, lost them the presidency in 2020, lost them the state of georgia twice actually when you count the Special Election in january, there is a Shelf Life on this for the Republican Party. The longer that this goes and the more that they lose, it is inevitable that this will fall in on itself. They are building right now their party on a house of cards. Set aside just the legal issues that Donald Trump is facing and what might happen in the coming weeks and months on that front alone. But the agenda that he is putting forward, the vision that he seems to continue to fight for is one that continues to look backward while the democratic party is putting forward an agenda that actually helps real people. The thing that stood out to me this past weekend, i was at this music festival. I was observing and watching and thinking that you have finally people out in the world living their life. Theyre not sitting at home all day looking at twitter, watching tv. Theyre out there living life. And i think thats going to have such a dramatic impact on what we have going forward. This is something that may not show up in polling, may not show up in prognostication and punditry, but when you have an american hostage that for the last year and a half now able to go outside, what theyre not going to want to hear is a political party saying i want to take you backward. Lets talk about the younger republicans, right, and the Washington Post writing this, most younger politicians pay at least Lip Service to what theyve learned from parents, grandparents. But George P. Bush makes no mention of his long line of politicians in his family. He makes no mention of anybody except for Donald Trump. You know, i think when your last name is bush its hard to hide that you have a long family lineage, that goes out saying. I dont think running away from that will do anything for him one way or the other. Again, its building this campaign and this party on a deck of cards that is going to collapse onto itself. Voter Suppression Bill claiming it was Voter Security where we had the most secure election in 2020. There were no issues. The only fraud We Saw was from the Republican Party.
