Or against it. And more New Reaction to a New York times report saying in the final weeks of President Trumps presidency, Mark Meadows pushed the Justice Department to investigate unfounded election fraud. Adam schiff telling me this report shows the Republican Party has become antidemocratic. Its again another assault on the independence of the Justice Department. We shouldnt be having those discussions. But the fact that he was trying to do it to overturn a u. S. Election shows what an antidemocratic party the Republican Party has become. The doj did not take up Mark Meadows suggestions. Were monitoring this. Ladies, welcome to you both. Amanda, what are you hearing about Senator Manchin and how is manchin responding . Reporter with his decision to speak out against supporting the for the people act in the senate here, this is not necessarily a surprise but it is causing a stir. Now there is no path to 50 votes in the senate for this legislation. Manchin had been on the sidelines of this for months, not fully weighing in, but he was the only democratic senator to not cosponsor this bill. As we are moving forward, were getting strong reaction from a number of congressional democrats. I want to read you a statement from one of the lead sponsors of this bill. He says reporter we should note Senator Manchin is arguing not is looking to support the Voting Rights for John Lewis, and that has bipartisan support. We heard earlier from Senator Manchin as he spoke on Fox News as to the reasons behind this decision of his. Take a listen. Ive been pretty clear on that in West Virginia, an oped came out today and laid out my concerns and my preference of what i think would happen. You know, voting is the bedrock of our democracy. An open, fair, secured voting. We used to go Around The World and explain and show and observe Voting Procedures in a democracy. Now if we Cant Practice what we preach, and were going do an overhalt, an 800 Page Overhaul of the Voting Rights what we call for the people act, theres a lot of great things i agree in that piece of legislation. But theres an awful lot of things that basically dont per tape to voting. Its the wrong piece of legislation to unite our country. I think it would divide us further. Reporter with this new on said, hes reiterating his continued position of not wanting to change or eliminate the filibuster. Thats getting a lot of pushback from a majority of senate democrats. Those who want to see reforms to the filibuster happen, because it is standing in their view as a major roadblock to further Policy Changes and reforms and actions that can make place, especially ones that bolster Joe Bidens agenda. So expect more reaction in the coming days with the senate returning tomorrow, june 7. I was going to say its going to start in about 18 hours or so. Thank you very much. Appreciate that. Now to Monica Alba at the White House. So in just a few days, wednesday, Joe Biden takes up his first trip overseas since he took office. How would that affect the Infrastructure Talks . Reporter it will likely continue to slow whats already been very incremental progress as these negotiations are still going on, but tomorrow will reach a critical junjuncture, a. Theres been conversations between the white House And Lead negotiators, but the White House has been rejecting all the Gop En Counterproposals because of the price tag. They cant agree on how much to spend and how to pay for it. So the president will have to decide, and he is leaving the door open to perhaps meeting with other republican lawmakers who might be working on a different piece of legislation, a different proposal. So that may happen. But its unlikely it will take place before wednesday when he does leave for the uk, belgium, and switzerland on this major first foreign trip that will be quite a test. So the president having to leave these domestic priorities a bit relegated and delegated. He will have his Jobs Cabinet continuing to work on this, and talk to lawmakers on Capitol Hill to see if things can really progress when hes gone. Its unlikely there will be major breakthroughs until he returns. The only Red Line is inaction for this president. He said he still wants bipartisan. But if he cant get that, he will want to have the democrats go it alone. That was echoed by his own Commerce Secretary this morning on one of the sunday shows. Reporter no matter who i talk to, republican, democrat, business leader, labor leader, everyone says it is time to make these investments, it is past time to make these investments. So, yes, i think at the end of the day there is commitment that inaction is unacceptable, and we will get something big done for the american people that meets the moment. Reporter so very important week ahead here, alex. Domestically. Of course, for that test on the world stage, but just one other note, of a signal of life returning to what we knew as normal before the pandemic, tomorrow for the first time the white House Briefing Room is going to return to 100 capacity. Remember, more than a year ago, it was slimmed down to only about 24, sometimes even less journalists taking questions, asking them of the press secretary. But tomorrow, well have a full house for the first time. Of course, in this administration, and this year given that 98 of the Press Corps here has been fully vaccinated. So youll expect to see about 49 of my colleagues pressing Jen Psaki Tomorrow afternoon. Alex . Buckle up jen, our friend. Thank you so much, Monica Alba. So lets go now to the latest from former president Donald Trump. Hes planning to headline at least four rallies this summer. But my next guest says his rebooted rallies have no place on your television. Joining me now is the writer of this opinion piece. Thanks for joining me. I know there are a lot of people who agree with you, because you say that the rallies are President Trumps most powerful remaining weapon. But then a few networks still carry them live and they only get snippets on live. How powerful can this weapon can be. So elaborate on that. Some networks carry them live and that is a mistake. Without the ability to add context, its hard to counter them. What is interesting about this snippets that get played is that taken out of the Stream Of Consciousness for everything that he does, you try to find Sense And Meaning in these random throwaways that he has, and that can make him seem more cogent than he is. So theres no benefit to highlighting what he says. I know its news worthy, because the Republican Party believes him to be their leader. He clearly still has power by the state gop. He was invited by the Republican Party in North Carolina to speak. I think given how aware we are of what hes going to say, weve heard some advisers, some republicans want him to move on, but Last Night, you cant do that. Hes still saying the 2020 election was stolen from him. Until he can move on, i dont see why we need to keep repeating that. Again, i totally hear you. Its as if he was evening dropping on conversations i was having with producers. So heres the argument for putting him on television, maybe not his entire rally. I dont know that msnbc really has ever put on his entire rallies. But when you look at him, he is still a player. There is a huge section of the country that still looks to him as their leader. So acknowledging that is something that, as News Organization you have to do, right . I mean, its something you have to work with. But then theres also the theory that by playing some of his things, he kind of, for lack of a better phrase, hangs himself. You listen to him and you go, oh, come on. And the absurdity of the things he says, theres almost like people will say, i am so tired of hearing this Guy Go On and on like this, right . So i mean, can you factor that into your assessment, as well . I get you, i really do. I think weve been trying to make that argument for the last five years. Surely this crazy thing that he said, people are going to be turned off by it. Hang on, hayes. I get you now, but he was president of the united states for four years. What the president of the united states says matters for this country, but Around The World. For sure. But now hes not. Hes not in office. Theres no more need that hes out of office. I think part of it is the form, the media that we have here on tv, we like images, but if an anchor like you read out snippets, it would be much better than airing it. You get the News Worthiness of what hes been saying out there without having to put his image on television like that. You know what i mean the oh, i do. Believe me, it is a constant conversation. So i get you. And im glad you wrote what you did and were able to discuss this. But i have to change topics now. That said, Senator Joe Manchin is now saying hes not going to support the sweeping changes to Voting Rights in the for the people act, reaffirming his commitment to saving the filibuster. He noted that both sides have relied heavily on the Fill Buster in the past. But democrats are pushing back. Listen to that. Mr. Manchin, vote to and have an Up And Down vote on whether or not we are going to have a continuation of Voting Rights in this country. Now we have the opportunity to do something about it, and Senator Manchin would rather preserve Jim Crow on some outdated theory of bipartisanship. How is this going to play out in the senate, hayes . So the optimist of me wants to believe hes laying the Ground Work of West Virginia as to why, when eventually the John Lewis act gets filibustered, he can say i tried my best and we can move forward. The more cynical side thinks this is all about still the people of West Virginia. Joe manchin likes to be seen back home as the guy willing to buck the party, go against the grain, and i think this is going to help. If you read this oped, which is in his home down paper in West Virginia, it doesnt say what he doesnt like about hs1 except that its too big and two, that republicans dont like it. I think hes been acting under the assumption that the voters of West Virginia will reward him for bipartisanship in a way thats slightly truer for him than most of the country. It comes down to is your state more important than the nation at manchin trying to say i just care about the people of West Virginia, or is it a deep belief this is the wrong bill . By the time we see whether or not the John Lewis bill gets filibustered, i think it will manchin says he does support the John Lewis voting Rights Act. Exactly. Thats going to bring back the voting Rights Act expanded across the country, this idea that the doj has to sign off on preclearance to make sure it doesnt affect minorities and people does not affect voting negatively. So i get Joe Manchin supports that. Its a good bill. I just know that it will not get 60 votes to move forward for debate, let alone for a vote in the senate. So when we get to that point, i think that well see whether or not this has been, you know, all laying the Ground Work for a sudden report for final reversal for manchin that says i tried my best, but if we cant get behind this to protect the right to vote, i have to move forward and go back on what i said before. But just so much Mind Reading going on with Joe Manchin here. Dude, you brought the big issues today. Hayes brown, thank you so much. I wish we could have fixed it all. Come see me again. Glad we have your stuff to read. Thank you so much. An update to breaking news. New reaction to Prince Harry and meghan markles new baby daughter. Matt bradley is in london outside Buckingham Palace for them. I imagine this is going overwhelm in london. Whats been the reaction . Reporter so far, this is the thing we were waiting for, some response from the palace. We just heard a very formal statement, very short, describing all the members of the Royal Family saying they are all delighted at hearing the news of the Death Excuse me, of the birth of Lily Diana windsor. These names are really important. Theres so much friction between the sussexes in california and the Royal Family here in london behind me. So this is something you can wonder whether adding another person into the Royal Family going to ease this tension or if its going heighten it. Lily beth will be eighth in line behind her 2yearold brother and behind her father, Prince Harry, who is sixth in line to the throne. So all of this is moving quite quickly, and the Royal Family acted as those they just heard the news. We also know that the baby came on friday. So we can assume that the Royal Family heard about this long before the rest of us. So looking around, theres not a lot of people who are reacting here in london. Its not entirely expected that we would see massive outpourings of emotions from the british public. But we can expect that this will be much discussed and tomorrows very proud, very vivid front pages here in london. Well be talking all about this. Absolutely. It is approaching dinnertime there. So i guess the folks can be expected to be at home. Matt bradley, thank you so much. It is a striking intervention, a frantic warning. Will washington act or just let it go . Im in the family business. And now you work for me, boomers. You want me to be a baby again . [ screams ] what the frittata . Im sending you undercover. Is this some kind of a Ninja Boy Band . Whah huh. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh Joe Biden is laying out his plans to rally the worlds democracies during his first international trip since taking office. Wednesday he will take off for europe, where he will participate in G7 And Nato summits. He says in a new oped, this trip is about realizing americas renewed commitment to our allies and partners and demonstrating the capacity of democracies to meet the challenges and deter the threats of this new age. And joining me now to discuss it all, larry sabitow, professor at the university of virginia, and director of the center for politics. Larry, good to see you. As we talk about Joe Biden, he certainly is no stranger to most of these international leaders that hes going to be meeting with. How will these relationships help, do you think, during the trip . Well, Theyll Help a lot. One thing, he is kind of the modern Day Gerald Ford succeeding Richard Nixon. Most allies were thrilled to have a new president who wasnt hobbled by scandal, and it is much more extreme in the case of President Trump. President trump was, of course, great difficulty in the relationships between america and so many of our allies. And they know Joe Biden. Hes been around for years and years and years in the senate and as Vice President and now as president. So i think this is guaranteed to go pretty well, at least with our allies. Well see what happens when he gets to vladamir putin. I appreciate the analogy between Richard Nixon to gerald ford. But that was scandal, but when it comes to the america first policy, that was almost an isolating policy. Were only about america in the actions that President Trump took. So how hard is it going to be for Joe Biden to come back and say, that was then, this is now . I mean, what are the challenges for allies to say, can we believe you . Because it was a rough four years with the other guy. Thats absolutely true, alex. They all know that President Trump is off and running for a second term again in 2024. How do they know that this wont happen again . How do they know that there wont be another misfire in the Electoral College . How do they know there wont be another January 6 . And i talked to a congressman who is connected to nato, just a couple of hours ago. And he told me that our allies are shocked and very unhappy that the republicans killed the January 6 commission, and that apparently there isnt going to be a president ial level commission, either. Maybe there will be something in congress, but one wonders whether its going to be of a sufficient stature to really look into this, and to tell the full story. Yeah. Of something that absolutely shocked so many in this country but people Around The World as they watched that unfold. Any way, larry, let me switch gears and get to a strong warning that you and 99 other scholars sent about Voting Rights reading in part so why did you decide to put your name on this warning about what was your Tipping Point where you decided something needed to be said . Sure. And full credit to the one america group, which has been around for a couple of decades in putting this together and getting the 100 plus scholars to sign it. When i read it, i agreed with every word of it. I had no hesitation of signing it. Im so concerned that so many people arent concerned that they think it happened January 6, but it was a onetime thing and dont worry about all this Voter Suppression in the states. Well find ways to overcome this. I no longer am an optimist. I dont know how anybody could be after four years of Donald Trump and now apparently four more years of his campaigning. This is a serious matter. De democracies have failed around the globe for centuries. What makes us think were special it cant happen here . We better start working Night And Day to make sure it doesnt. President trump as recently as Last Night, still talking about voter fraud. What are you afraid will happen if this nation continues in this direction . He got 74 Million votes. 74 Million votes after the performance he put in for four years alex, if that doesnt worry sensible people, nothing will. And i watched the whole speech Last Night. I did have to take a few pills. But i did watch the whole speech. Its the same old story, except its worse. Hes even more disconnected from reality than he was when he was in the White House. And i assumed at least talk to some people daily, who knew what was going on. This is going to continue. It will not solve itself. The most disturbing part as always is that the thousand plus people in the room applauded virtually everything he said and of course, whooped and hollered and gave standing ovations to the most offensive parts of the speech. So how can you be optimistic . Not you, but people who say, thats all in the past. Hes going to fade away now. Hes not fading. Hes not fading. And thats why we all need to be prepared on a daily basis to refute the ridiculous things that he and his allies say. Ive got to tell you, listening to you is sobering right now. That said, you are very famous for your election krystal ball. Larry, do you have any early predictions who will have control of the House And Senate after the 2022 midterms . Whats interesting is that if youre looking at history, obviously, you would say the republicans have a good to excellent chance to take over the House Of Representatives and maybe the senate, too. Thats more complicated. But the factors weve been talking about may, may give democrats a chance to hold on to the house. People are looking at President Trump and democrats get as angry as they can be when they hear him speak and see what he is saying. There is a possibility that despite redirecting, we favors the republicans and history which favors the republicans, that Voter Suppression is going to get a lot of democrats and a lot of minorities in this country angry that their votes are being taken away, or that republicans are trying to take them away. And thats not to even mention 2024 is pretty clear republicans are planning to cheat, bigtime, in 2024. This was a dry run in 2020 with the State Legislatures controlled by republicans. Thinking about exchanging lectors, the electors theyre going to do a better job next time. And i mean destroying democracy. Wow. Ive got to tell you, larry, good to have you on. Thank you so much. Ill see you again soon. Thanks. How master artist Vincent Van Gogh may help Joe Biden reach a vaccination mile stone. And that is next. Here is something we want to remind you about. Five months after the attack on the capitol, america considers existential threats to its democracy. It was on this day 77 years ago, the tide turned against nazi, germany. 150,000 men stormed the beaches of normandy, beginning the liberation of france and europe from nazi tyranny. More than 4400 allied troops died on that very day. And today in normandy, ceremonies paid tribute. Families of fallen soldiers who traveled from the u. S. A California Health Panel threw a new twist in the efforts to return to life after covid, and it comes as the millions count down to when the state loosens its mask requirements. Lets go to Scott Cohn in california for us. What are folks there saying about all this . Reporter alex, its a little bit of a mixed bag. Sort of like the rules and restrictions themselves. Heres where were at. On tuesday the 15th, so coming up little more than a week away, all the restrictions in california are supposed to go away under gavin newsoms plan to reopen the economy. But it may very well be different in the workplace. Cal osha is the agency that sets workplace standards. These are subject to another layer of final approval. This is what they approved now. They are still requires masks for everyone in the workplace, whether youre vaccinated or not, unless everyone in the room that youre in is vaccinated. Employers have to provide those n95 masks to unvaccinated workers. There is some easing about barriers and physical distancing. But say you work in a store, youre at work, youre vaccinated but you still have to wear a mask. You can come back after Work And Shop and not have a mask on. Now, california as weve been talking about for months, has had some of the strongest restrictions. So as the state eases back into normal life, some people are fine with this. If were going to start being maskless ourselves, the employees need to stay mask told give the Safety Factor first. Lets get through the summer and the fall. Lets see how things play out and how many people get vaccinated before we make the final decisions. Reporter there is, though, some pushback from business groups, including the California Chamber of commerce that says the Cdc Rules and the loosening of restrictions should be what prevails. They say reporter they say everybody should get vaccinated, but were seeing a little bit of a mixed bag here as we get back to normal in california. Scott, thank you so much. Its a new effort to get closer to Joe Bidens goal of 70 of americans with at least one shot by july fourth. New York Citys latest Administration Site is now outside the Vincent Van Gogh exhibit. Are folks taking advantage of this and coming in and getting vaccinated, too . Reporter yes, and were seeing an uptick in attendance because of it. People are either interested in getting into the exhibit or they came out here to get a vaccine and got a discount to get inside. So it is so popular, you can get tickets to the aquarium, the bronx zoo. You can go almost anywhere in New York and find an Incentive Program for you. But i spoke with the producer of this show, as well as some people in line, and this partnership they have going on. Listen here. I think its a great way to encourage people to get vaccinated. Free tickets, lotteries in other states. So i think its a great way to encourage people that wouldnt normally know where to get it, or might do it just last minute. Of course were noticing a great movement here by having this site here. 100 . Reporter all right. And just to touch on a few of the big prizes nationwide. Ohio doing their million dollar vaccine lottery. Nascar saying you can get tickets to next Years Daytona 500 in a Sweep Stakes. Even United Airlines having a Sweep Stakes for a year of free flights. Everybody is pulling out the stops. The question, is will it work . Some 33 of americans are hesitant. We have a big chunk of a way to go, about 50 of the nation is at least partially vaccinated. So it does continue down to about 600,000 vaccinations still needed in these last 29 days. I love the way the country is trying to come together and incentivize people to get vaccinated and be safe. President trumps return to The Public Stage featured a speech that lasted almost an hour and a half, and covered a range of topics, most notably putin. Lets bring in olivia troye, former aide to Mike Pence. Welcome to you. Im sure youve gone over that which Donald Trump said Last Night. Im curious what your reaction has been to it, to all You Saw and heard . Hi, alex. Good to see you again. You too. You know, it made my stomach turn. I found the speech to be fairly boring, but i found it to be incredibly dangerous once again. He proved that Donald Trump remains one of the most dangerous politicians i think ever in american politics. I think the Big Lie lives on, but not only the Big Lie, but the new reiteration or a new version of the Big Lie youre going to see in the coming months in the upcoming elections is the legacy of this man. I think that republicans who are supporting it, are part of this legacy to include my former boss, Mike Pence. The rhetoric Last Night was dangerous, the attacks on people like dr. Fauci, public health specialists, and were seeing the threats against his life. All of these things are a danger to our society, our democracy, and they are being enabled by the people who support this man. Hmm. Your former boss, you mentioned him there, he spent the last few days in New Hampshire. Heres what he told republicans in New Hampshire. Take a listen. January 6 was a dark day in the history of the united states capitol. President trump and i have spoken many times since we left office. And i dont know if well ever see Eye To eye on that day, but i will always be proud of what we accomplished. Can you interpret that . Is that something sincere from Republicans Viewpoint . How can he hold these two views at the same time . Well, theyre conflicting. This man, his life was in danger, and the lives of our congressional leadership was in danger that day. And to speak that way is just ludicrous. I think hes betting on the fact that he needs to Hang On to these trump supporters, because i think he wants to run in 2024. I get the attacks are all related to Mike Pence. To him, he is a traitor. And i dont see him coming back from him. So the best thing Mike Pence could do right now is start taking a stand for our democracy, start telling the truth and take a stand against this movement that is undermining us. But will he . Because this insider report, it says that he was in New Hampshire to schmooze, to get January 6 out of the way. What do you read into this . I dont think he will. I think that that is everything there is to know about Mike Pence. Every time i want him to take a stand, and we certainly have our differences, i keep hoping he will. But the fact of the matter is, he wont. Thats not who Mike Pence is. Compare that to republican congresswoman Liz Cheney, now facing eight primary opponents after she voted for Donald Trumps impeachment. Lets listen to how she describes it. It will be a choice for the voters of wyoming when a candidate who has pledged loyalty to Donald Trump, loyalty to one man, and me, who has demonstrated loyalty to the people of wyoming, loyalty to the constitution above all. And i think it will be a very clear message about where the Republican Party is. So these primaries, you have conservative republicans, you have trumpian republicans. Can the gop ever reconcile these two factions . Because there still are true conservative republicans like the Liz Cheneys, and then there are the trumpian republicans of whom we speak all the time. I dont think were going to see a reconciliation any time soon. I think the Republican Party is where it is right now, and that is the party of trumpism. I think now more than ever, Liz Cheneys voice matters, and her voice needs to be heard and we need to back people like her. I think what she is doing is shes every day speaking the truth about what is happening here. Unabashedly and without here. So watching whats happening in her primary, part of the Accountability Project will be there to back her in the primary. I think all eyes should be on wyoming. I think Thats Representative of where the country is going. And if youre a person who cares about our democracy, you need to be standing by people like that and candidates. Because i think what is happening there, we need to put a stand against these trump republicans and this maga movement. Overall, whether youre a democrat, republican, independent, these elections will impact the overall strategy of what the Republican Party is doing and whats happening here in our country. Shes tasked with working on the growing migrant crisis on this very high profile visit. Lets go over to kerry sanders, who will be there to greet here in an teagua, guatemala. Welcome to you. What can we expect from the Vice President s visit . Reporter its going to be a very difficult trip for her. Expectations are already perhaps lowering, because you cant on one visit first to guatemala and then mexico solve the Migration Problem that begins here to central america. You can see this is her plane taking off, just a short time ago. She will have about a Fivehour Flight and then make her way here. She is coming with a Prom Toys the Central American region to guatemala, El Salvador and honduras with a promise of help. Some humanitarians, some just hard cash. First of all, more than 100,000, Hundreds Of Thousands of Covid Vaccine doses, which are muchneeded. 300 Million in humanitarian aid plus a promise of 4 Billion in longterm development and security. That is of course what has happened in the past when people have invested in different administrations here in central america and it has not answered the vexing question which is stopping the migration flow. One of the reasons there is so much attention on this area now of course is because so many children are arriving at the southern border. Last month somewhere between 22,000 and 25,000 children. Thats about the size of a small town i once lived in in sudbury, massachusetts, arriving in one Month And Crossing in. So she will attempt in meetings here to see if she can come up with some answers. One of the reasons children are leaving is simply because of food. Take a look at this Farmers Field here. This farmer epitomizes the problem that exhausts across the area. They do not have irrigation. They rely strictly on rainwater falling. This is now known as the dry corridor. There used to be an abundant crop but its off about 50 and they blame it on climate change. Theres less water. Without irrigation, theyre seeing less food grown. People are going hungry. And really, alex, the solution to that is not something that they have at their hands and its one that if the united states is going to try to help this country here and the others in the northern triangle as these three countries are known as, its going to take a very, very long time to help them solve that problem. It is a huge task that she has ahead. That you for outlining that for us. As the u. S. Americans across the country are celebrating Pride Month this june with the return of parades and marches this year. But across the world, Lgbtqi Plus people face persecution daily. In ghana just this week a court detained Bail Decisions for 21 detained activists arrested three weeks ago. In uganda, 39 men were finally granted bail after being arrested at a shelter. My next guest works to help these victims flee persecution. The Executive Director of Rainbow Railroad. Im show glad that you are here to talk about this. I know that you have helped 1,600 people find safety through emergency relocation, other help like that. First of all, how did this get started and how does it work . Thanks so much for having me. Great to be here. Rainbow railroad is an international organization thats based in the united states, in canada, founded in 2006. Our name is inspired by the Underground Railroad of course, the corridor that helped africanamerican slaves reach the north. And our purpose is really simple, to help persecuted lgbtq persons Around The World like those in Ghana And Uganda find pathways to safety. Right now although were celebrating pride here, Around The World there are still 70 countries that criminalize samesex policies. And those laws put people at risk. Lets talk about the situation in africa specifically. Dozens were arrested monday in uganda. Friday most of them were granted bail days later, of course. But how do we even know about this situation there . Why were only some granted bail . What does this mean for Everybody Else . So Rainbow Railroad has a vast international network of partners. We work Hand In hand with Human Rights Defenders who really bravely put their lives at risk every day to promote lgbtqi rights. When we heard about this situation we heard directly at the moment they were arrested from our partners. We released a video with permission from our partners highlighting the situation. Immediately went to support, fund for bail. Happy that theyre released. You know, theres a mixture of false reporting in the ugandan press about whats happening. This has been going on for about a year, using covid19 as an excuse to crack down on Lgbtq People. So its really just a strong legal Defense Team in uganda pushing for their release and were glad some of them are free. Some of the people that Rainbow Railroad helped were featured on the Reality Show canadas drag race and one man is from uganda and he described life there. People following you and attacking you anonymous. They can make you disappear and theres nothing you can do about it. Since i left, everything has been going from bad to worse. Four people i know have been killed. Just two weeks ago, 125 can you put into perspective how it is to live in a place where you are not only targeted by police but also by your fellow citizens and the threat of death because of your sexual identity . How real is this . This is how Lgbtq People get displaced every day in these countries. Once youre outed for being a member of the community, youre ostracized from your family, youre denied employment, sometimes youre targets of violence from the police. And so of course everyone wants to be able to stay in their country and live their lives as they choose. But dennis, who was a human rights defender, sometimes the only other option is to flee, which is why we help them flee and why we are hoping to do more to have lgbtq folks be resettled here in the united states. How gratifying is it to you the work that youre doing . Youre literally saving lives. I like to say that we are facilitators in the journey of brave people like dennis who make a really hard decision, under duress at the last minute to leave with little on their person. Your earlier segment mentioned El Salvador, honduras and guatemala. Lgbtq people in those countries are facing violence even in those caravans entering the united states, so their vulnerability is really heightened. We with the patchwork of volunteers and supporters just do what we can to facilitate the safe migration into the united states from other countries. Bless you for the work youre doing from Rainbow Railroad. Thank you for talking with me and highlighting all of this. Thats going to do it for me on this edition of Alex Witt reports.
