That cost her Leadership Position and addressing trumpisms impact on her party. Also ahead, new reporting showing a trend we rarely hear about. Brutality by police against latinos. And with cyberattacks on the rise against american companies, President Obamas former advisor Ben Rhodes joins us with how Team Biden should fight back. This this is American Voices. Thanks for joining us this here. Breaking news from North Carolina where Donald Trump is late to his own party. A speech before the states Republican Party bound to fuel fire to the states using his Big Lie to roll back your Voting Rights. Trump was set to be speaking now, but the venue says he is late. We will keep an eye on whatever comes of his speech in greenville to a crowd of 1,500 people. A smaller venue for a president obsessed with crowd size. Not his outrage over losing a legitimate election, but if he may give it another go in 2024 as republicans use his Big Lie to pass Voter Restrictions across this country. Republicans, is Donald Trump really the answer . Liz cheney says no. We have new comments obtained by Nbc News where you will hear the Congresswoman Address her thoughts on trump and the direction he has taken her party in. Meantime, trump is suggesting he might be interested in nancy pelosis job. The new interview with a farright Wing Radio shoes, he seemed open to suggestion he could run for congress to become house speaker. He calls the idea very interesting. And trumps efforts remain in office, new reporting from the New York Times uncovered emails from trumps former chevy of Staff Mark meadows. The times reports in december he pushed the Justice Department investigate unfounded Conspiracy Theories about the 2020 president ial election. Six months later trump supporters still touting the lie that led to the January 6th insurrection. This is a slow moving insurrection. Pushing new laws to make it harder to vote and seize control over the control of elections. Pennsylvania republicans are now hoping to mimic the bizarre Election Audit in arizona but the states democratic Attorney General says not so fast. These are folks who are dangerous. These are folks who are trying to undermine our democracy. These are folks who have no respect for the Rule Of Law and these are folks who are in charge right now in the legislature. Being the Errand Boy for Donald Trump is not a legitimate legislative purpose. The filibuster stands in the way to of so much of President Bidens agenda the joining us to discuss Donald Trumps grip on the Republican Party and the fight to protect voting Rights Ali Vitali in greenville, North Carolina, also joining us brian fallon, Executive Director of Demand Justice and hayes brown. I want to start with you. Set the stage in greenville. What is Trump Planning to say it the crowd . Any news since we last spoke . Reporter yeah, predictions are loose. The music has gotten louder. The same thing a senior advisor tole me, that the focal points of the speech as they are prewritten are going after the biden administration, talking about dr. Anthony faucis newly publicized emails from the early days and weeks of the pandemic, and talking about china and Reasserting American dominance on the world stage. Thats not to say that those are going to be the headlines though. You mentioned all of the things that are in the news right now around former president. Those are things that could easily come up. You also have to consider that this is the start of a revival of public appearances. He is supposed supposedly supposed to begin doing rallies across the country. Cpac, the conservative gathering that hosted him earlier this year, announced he is going to be a guest in texas a few weeks from now. He is trying to start asserting his power thats just been spoke been it this point. Now asserting it in a tangible way, inserting himself into the Daily News zls and messaging of the party. Thats not going dom with open arms from everyone. Liz cheney, she is leading a small charge within the Republican Party trying to wrest it from Donald Trumps wroel. There are a lot of people who want to see him take a more public Stance And Use that megaphone that he has to lead this party going forward. The problem is leading it forward oftentimes means for Donald Trump looking back and relitigating old grievances. The blog didnt work out. It was short lived. If you read the email statements going out they have continuously started to read like his tweets which were a manifestation of Stream Of Consciousness at various points during his presidency. By bringing back the rallies he is bringing back the Inperson Version of that. Those rallies over the last five years felt more like Stream Of Consciousness, real time reactions to news cycles. He hasnt been at a podium in a while. We could hear that tonight. Certainly we are about to head into a summer where he really takes that megaphone and that could be problematic for republicans. Nbc just obtained new audio from representative Liz Cheney about trumps hold over the Republican Party. Take a listen. I think its a very real threat and its an ongoing threat and i think that President Trumps continued activities demonstrate the falsity of the idea that if we simply ignore him, hell go away. There are some in my party, who are embracing him. There are some who dont want to embrace him, who dont want him to be a part of the future of the party or the country, but who think that we can get to that point by simply ignoring him. And i just dont believe that. You always have Clarity Arent this. Talk me through the consequences if the g. O. P. Doesnt move away from trump. Both for the party and, more importantly, for the country. So the party is, i think, we think of the Republican Party mostly as the republican national committee. You know, the national republican brand and federal members of congress, federal members of the pp party. Remember that trump is there at the North Carolina g. O. P. s rallies speaking. He is there for a State Gop Party and i think if you look around the country many of these state republican parties are not ready to give up on trump. They have been take over by trumpists the last four years. I think that something we have yet to contend with. We have yet to think about, okay, we have considered how do we get it so that we can keep trump from running from office again or how do we get it so we can focus on the national republicans and ask them, like, what do you do about someone like trump, but ignores the fact that all of these State Parties believe he is the leader the party, want him out there speaking and rallying up the base because trump we learned the last five, six years can win primaries for people. He can get you the republican nomination. But when he win generals . I am not certain. Trying to change out general elections are held so that whoever wins the republican primary can actually win the general in what would normally be more contested areas and contested states. So thats what the long arc were looking at now with this continued embrace of Trump And Trumpism is that we are studying we are letting continue a series of actions that will lead to very questionable results in 2022 and 2024 in the midterms and the next president ial election if the laws from republican legislatures change how elections are run and how they are decided continue to stay in place. Right. To underscore that point, republicans are pushing the same lies that led to the insurrection to justify new restrictive voting laws. The New York Times Editorial Board rights mr. Trump and his supporter pursued lawsuits to overturn Election Results and then urged about on by mr. Trump some stormed the capitol. Now they are seeking to rewrite the rules to make it easier for republicans to win elections without winning the most votes. Brian, what is at stake when you have one political party that is working to trim the electorate instead of focusing on Policy Ideas to win over new voters . I think that a lot of democrats after the 2020 election with the deplatforming of trump on places like twitter hope the fever might break with republicans. You i think Joe Biden hoped that. This is still trumps party and the Wig Lie and Voter Suppression laws is the closest thing that the Republican Party has to a Policy Platform at this point. Liz cheney is right about how some republicans that a few of them like her that worry about trump, some wish if they ignore him maybe he will go away and his radicalizing impact on half the country will disappoint. I think after the insurrection happened i think he should have seen more of a move to potentially unseat some of the members of congress that participated in that insurrection and i think you see a lax in the slowness to bring up Hr 1, the John Lewis Voting rights act. Election experts inside the democratic party says we need to pass those measures by Labor Day to mitigate the Voter Suppression laws across the country by the 2022 midterms. When it comes to Voting Rights and other items on the biden agenda, we are talking about Voting Rights, Voting Rights, the filibuster remains in the way. We were just talking with a reporter who said trying to figure out what going on in the mind of Kyrsten Sinema or Joe Manchin is like looking into a fwlak box. Your sense of how they can be effectively pressured. Does that need to come from the biden White House directly . It. To needs to come from the biden white House And Senate leadership in the form of setting up a series of votes on things that pit the democratic caucus in the senate against the republican caucus in the senate, set up votes on one measure after another but for the republicans ability to filibuster would pass. The first such bill was the Commission Vote that happened just before the memorial Day Weekend that was filibustered by republicans but for that filibuster it would have passed. You saw the democrats in support of that. We need more votes on measures like that. To be honest you dont have the votes to get rid of the filibuster. Thats true. We havent tested Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema on Policy Meesh us a that will live or die based on the filibuster. Chuck schumer has committed to having a vote on hr1. I sort of hope we start lighting up the tomorrow knows on bills like Hr 1 in the spring. It needs to be followed up with votes on the John Lewis act, d. C. Statehood and repeated votes on the measures to start to build a case with the public about why they need to get rid of the filibuster. If you force Joe Manchin to take positions on the bills, force Kyrsten Sinema to be siding with republicans against, you know, allowing people the right to vote, i dont think thats a tenable position for Joe Manchin and kristen welker. They need to put the bills on the floor and force them to choice. I think he is right. I think a lot of these cases i think that the filibuster is in the way but Joe Manchin is in the way. I dont blame schumer for not wanting to put bills on the floor if he doesnt have manchins support. Its embarrassing to get not quite a majority. They dont want to embarrass manchin. They want to make it for the bill that he supports, that a majority would be able to pass it except for the filibuster, that those get put on the floor again and again and again. So thats why manchin doesnt agree with the position on infrastructure. Manchin is still not quite in favor of all of the provisions inside of infrastructure. I dont blame schumer for not wanting make him be a 4951 vote with manchin on the side of the republicans. But we need to see that Pressure Ramp up moving forward. I do think that we are running out of time to get these bills on the floor and passed. So i think that were going to see that in the next couple of weeks. I think i am glad we are going to see a vote on Hr 1 in june. I think it will be interesting to see what happens with the John Lewis Bill which manchin does in theory support. We will see what we get to that point. Thank you all so much. Next, the fight to end police violence. What does that like in latino communities . Former obama national Security Advisor Ben Rhodes will talk the threat of cyberattacks, what is next for iran and his new book and the Commencement Script that went off script. Between 2014 and today more than 2,600 latinos were killed by police or died in police custody. Among the victims 13yearold adam of chicago. His killing caught on camera. He was shot by police despite his hands being this the air. Adam would have turned 14 last week. Joining me nicole gonzalez, associate professor of sociology at brown university. I think we may have you, too, carmen. I promise to come to you. In chicago, Police Kill latinos seven times the rate of white nonlatinos. Your sense of what is driving that disparity . I think we have to accept that latinos are racialized alongside Black Americans as well, and for some in the latino community there was kind of a discrepancy. People were blaming Adams Family but they werent blaming the Chicago Police for the shooting. And so i think there is latino racism. And it is adjacent to black racism and it is just as deadly and just as violent. I want to talk about that. Carmen, your nonprofit is hosting a rally honoring a 22yearold killed by police last year in california. Your sense of what accountability would look like in a case like this. Certainly. We think accountability, first of all, justice is unique to every family. So justice is really pertaining to what the family needs are. But accountability would be officer the officer and all the officers responsible for seans killing prosecute as well as fired and i think that happens especially because we feel that many Police Officers get away with murder. And one thing we dont want to see is this officer being let go, especially when the family has been pushing every single day fighting since June 2nd of 2020 to get justice for their brother. Nicole, you and carmen are deep in this work. The numbers i read from the report dont surprise you. I think a lot of people might be surprised simply because they dont see those headlines. Los angeles times argues latinos need to be more vocal about police brutality. How much is about organizing within latino communities . Well, even the notion of latino is kind of a newly invented category. Gomez has a book called inventing latinos, which is within that category. There are Mexicans Americans and cubanamericans and Puerto Rican americans and not everybody has the same view of police brutality. Some identify as white. Others nonwhite. And with that heterogenuity there will be disagreements about police vail, whether its justified. If people are dying at police hands, it is unacceptable and we dont have the Accountability Structures to make It Stop are to hold these officers accountable. We often protect them. So, hopefully, we can as americans agree it is wrong. And if we have these numbers that latinos are dying at, you know, significant disproportionate rate of white americans, we need to hold police accountable. I dont need to tell you that there are those who would like to use the issues to divide black communities and latinos that are not black. How do you flip the script to make this an opportunity for unity and allyship. There has always been solidarity efforts. As it pertains to data in regards to latinos, there is no good data about latinx people and the issue of mass incarceration, Criminal Justice and Police Killings because of the way in which data is collected by race and ethnicity. If included, they are often filled out by Law Enforcement, which leaves room for error. So latinos are often categorized as white, black or unknown. In the case of sean, he was categorized by police as african american. So we as people have been fighting on the front lines around racial Justice And Police accountability are showing up for our black siblings as we are also shouting that people pay attention to the Police Kills in the latino community. Lets not continue to perpetuate this narrative that we are divided. We have been in solidarity for quite some time, especially over the decades of organizing through the chicano movement, the black liberation movement, the american indian movement. We have always shown up for one another. And there were considerations that were happening with fred Hampton And Latino leaders in the past as well as dr. King and the chicano movement. That narrative could be put out there. But we as latinos need to make sure that we show up. And we also have to understand that this has been happening over 200 years. We know that the history shows that latinos, particularly mexicans, were lynched here in california. About 600 were lynched across the country. So we understand that Police Killings is our issues, too. However, we need to make it a mainstream issue. Nicole, broaden this out for me. We are talking specifically about police brutality. How does this apply to bigger questions of Justice Reform . Well, whats happening to the latino community is happening to african american communities. In some ways, when we think about the injustice that the segments are experiencing, this is, you know, withers away at the legitimacy of the entire system. We expect it to be equitable, fair. When something goes wrong we expect accountability. So many structures protect Law Enforcement when they are committing crimes. In the case of adam toledo, they lied. The police lied and said that adam had a gun. And if it wasnt for the video, that lie would have sustained itself. And so without Accountability Structures, with prosecutors that are unwilling to charge officers, you know, in some ways it delegitimizes our american criminal Justice System and we as americans need to vote better, do better and demand better. Carmen, nicole. Thank you both. Today President Biden calling a meeting with his national Security Team as it determines how to respond to recent cyberattacks by russia. New today the President Meeting with his national Security Team after a recent highprofile cyberattacks including last month when a Hacking Group linked to russia shut down the colonial pipeline leading to gas shortages and panic on the east coast. Another Ransomware Attack last weekend shut down the Jbs Meat processing company. The attack was carried out by a russian group named rebel. In massachusetts the Marthas Vineyard Ferry system still affected yesterday after a Ransomware Attack. So while these are nothing new, these attacks are becoming more frequent and more expensive. Something Cyber Security Experts have long warned of. According the White House Russias Involvement on the attacks be on the president s mind when he meets with putin In Geneva later this month. There will be an opportunity for the president to discuss this directly with President Putin to reiterate the fact that we believe that responsible states do in the Harbor Ransomware criminals. We will continue to make the case that responsible countries need to take decisive action against ransomware networks. Joined by Ben Rhodes, the former depth national Security Advisor under President Obama and Msnbc Contributor and author of the Brandnew Book After The Fall being american in the world we have made. I am excited to talk about the book. First, these Cyber Ware attacks. Officials in the biden administration are, quote, hair on fire over these rising cyberattacks. They are moving to treat such attacks as a national security threat, using Intelligence Agencies to conduct counteroffensives. Can you gifs a sense of what that weeks like . Going after individuals or the state governments where these people live . Well, first of all its a shift from treating them like a Law Enforcement matter. Treating it like a national Security Matter puts it in the intelligence community. Part of that is how do you strengthening the cyber defenses and considering offensive cyber operations. Yes, some of this could be going after kinds of groups, shadowy groups that may be engaged in this criminal activity. A lot a lot of us are skeptical they could operate in russia without the tacit Permission Or Acquiescence of the russian government. I think ultimately the question being debated in the White House is whether or not start engaging counterattacks. The risk of that, of course, is the cycle continues to escalate. Can you give us a sense of what type of retaliation the u. S. Can wage against nongovernment groups . You could try to shut down their operations. You could try to send them a message that you can get into their systems as much as they have been getting into ours. Thats what some of this is. There is a Cat And Mouse element to this. Sometimes you want to kind of just send a message. Look, we can get in your networks, too, cause you problems, too. That is something that increasingly as we see states and nonstate actors engaged in this cyber activity, Thats Part of the landscape of the world that were in. I think what the biden team is attuned to is the fact that this has reached a point where its having economic consequences in the united states as well as being a national security risk. I want to talk about your book. One of the things you learned from writing it is Corruption And Authoritarianism go Hand In hand. Your sense of what that will look like . Well, i think this is one of the of the most underappreciated issues. We talk about how do you respond to vp with sanctions. When you look at someone like Vladimir Putin or his Client Lukashenko in belarus they Zepd Encore Interrupt networks. People finance their politics and run dark money, launder money through the u. S. Financial system. So one of the ideas that has gotten traction in the biden White House, in addition to going after putin and lukashenko, what more from an Enforcement Measure to crack down on the moneylaundering get at the billions of dollars that people like putin rely on to subsidize everything from disinformation attacks on the united states to his own rule. Your book you draw a line between authoritarian regimes like russia and the current g. O. P. Quote, like the Republican Party, putin has appealed to a particular strain of nationalism, christianity, hostility to muslims, subversion of the international Order And Longing for an idealized past. Can you expand on that Big Idea there . Well, i think what i basically found in looking at place like russia or hungary, i talked to an activist there. His point to me was the way in which the Prime Minister turned this place intoannah talksy, tapping into peoples grievances after the financial crisis. Redrawn parliamentary districts, judges, changing the voting laws, enriching people on the outside who buy up the media and turn it into a right wing propaganda machine. Importantly wrapping it up in a nationalist us versus them message. And the them can be anybody from im grants to muslims, other minority groups, George Soros constantly makes appearances. This is a trend we are seeing around the world thats not just happening here. I think we can understand it better here if we recognize that this has been kind of an Offensive Maneuver by authoritarians over the last decade or two. In your research in talking with people, did you get a sense not just of the problem, but how you undo the problem . How you get to the underbelly of in us versus them . Yeah. I did. I talked to Hong Kong protesters, people like alexey navalny, democratic activists around the world. If you look at navalny, he was innovative in exposing putins corruption. Thats what got him thrown into prison. He hit at the vulnerability of the regime. Really exposing what the tools are of these autocrats, their corruption networks, the way in which they use disinformation campaigns. If luke at other Opposition Movements that started to have success, a real key is unity among the opposition. People like putin try to create disunity among their opponents. The opposition puts together a big umbrella over itself in a Place Lick hungary and suddenly they have a chance to take out an autocrat in the election next year. Its a lesson for us to not ignore issues of democracy. Whale we are focused on important issues involving the economic, for instance, sometimes we have not paid enough attention to the fact that Voting Rights get rolled back, that communities are marginalized. So i think here in this country we have to attend to the health of our democracy, can people vote, what is happening with Social Media Platforms that are sorting people into disinformation bubbles. Thats what its going take, an all hands on Deck Effort to defend democracy in this career and other places. Thank you for taking everything we talked about on the show and wrapping it up in a bow. After the fall being american in the world we made. Still ahead, 165,000 woman left the Work Force in april. Why is the postpandemic recovery not helping women especially women of color . They were laid off during the pandemic because, of course, there was no business, but now they are fighting to get their jobs back. The latest Jobs Report shows a sluggish return to the Work Force especially among women. The overall Unemployment Rate for women hit a little over 5 last month. Higher among women of color, 8 of black women are unemployed, 7 for latinas. The question before us, why . With me now to make sense of the numbers, an Economy Reporter for the 19th. You know when the Jobs Report comes out i walk over to twitter to see how you are breaking down what this means for women. What do you make of the numbers that we got . Alicia, i know when you like my tweets on Jobs Tay i am going it get an email and be on your show over the weekend. We had some good news this month. We saw that about half of all of the job gains in may went to women. A lot of that was driven by what the Vice President was talking about. A lot of jobs came back in the hospitality sector. That was the sect their gained the most jobs. And so when that happens, women tend to benefit. They are the most likely to be in that sector. And also the most likely to be in the lowwage jobs in that sector. Same with the public sector, education jobs. We saw a big rebound there last month. So that is the good news. The badder, less good news, is that the trend that we have seen all year continues to be true even when we have a month thats a little bit better, right, which is that women of color are still far, far behind. White women are at around 4. 8 Unemployment Rate, lake you mentioned, and black women almost twice that at this point in the pandemic. And so just to put it in context a little bit, you know, the monthtomonth numbers, you have to couch them a little bit. We eversed what happened in april and may. This is a really the situation changes a Lot Month to month. What we need to focus on is the trend, and the Trend Sd still true that we continue to ask ourselves, yes, its a recovery, but a recovery for whom. And you were clear this has to do with the industries, how much with Child Care . A lot of it has to do with Child Care. The other two big factors are the pandemic and Child Care. The pandemic still not under control. Children under the age of 12 cannot get vaccinated. That hurts moms. Their ability to remain in the Work Force. The other part is Child Care. The Child Care industry, one in seven Child Care jobs disappeared from the start of the pandemic. We have centers that are back, yes, but a lot of them are not back at the capacity that they were before this pandemic started. Until that starts to happen, we are not going to see those numbers come down. And the reality is that even as we look at those numbers and we talk about when are we going to be back in a prepandemic world . Its probably not going to be until the end of 2022, and even then what world would we be returning to anyway, right . Right now, in this moment, white workers have a lower Unemployment Rate than black workers had Unemployment Rate than black workers had at the start of the pandemic. Before the pandemic started, before covid, when the economy was doing well. So we are working hard to get back to that point, but it was not a point of equality either. It still was an economy that was hurting a lot of women of color, just like we are seeing now. You have also reported on the expanded Child Tax Credit, writing that some of the poorest families still Cant Access the money. You write, many dont know the expansion happened. Even if they do, information about what they have to do to get it is still scarce. Many Lack Access to a computer or dont have the digital literacy to fill out the form and provide the necessary paperwork. Your sense of what the biden administration, what congress needs to be doing to fill in those gaps . Yeah, thats exactly it. We know that this administration is tuned in to the fact that these issues are there, that we need to work on them. However, even policies like the Child Tax Credit, which, you know, was one of the most significant policies to come out of the administration so far, it is coming up against Road Blocks because we are working with a system that really was not designed to reach the lowest wage workers, the people who would really benefit from this money. So were going to start to see the Child Tax Credit come out in july. It is going to come out monthly. A lot of families are going to benefit from that, but it could cut Child Poverty in half if and this is a big if if it can reach lowwage workers who dont file taxes, people who dont have permanent addresses, undocumented folks. It has to reach them. So that is the effort that is taking place right now. It is really, really challenging for the administration, for the local organizations that are doing it because there is just no system in place to reach these people. We have never done it. So we are doing that now, and theres a lot of potential, but that is going to be determined by how successful we are at reaching them. I hope i see you between now and a month from now, but please pencil me in for the next report. You know i love talking to you. Thank you so much.
