Well keep an eye on whatever comes of his speech in greenville, for a crowd of 1,500 people. One thing well be looking out for is not his outrage over losing a legitimate election, but if he may give it another go in 2024 as republicans use his Big Lie to pass Voter Restrictions across this country. Is Donald Trump really the answer republicans . Liz cheney says no, and we have new comments obtained by nbc where youll hear the congresswoman addressing her thoughts on trump and the direction hes taking her party in. Trump is also suggesting he might be interested in nancy pelosis job. In a new interview with a farrightwing radio host, trump seemed to the suggestion he could run for congress to become house speaker. He calls the idea very interesting. His effort to remain in office, new reporting from The New York Times uncovered emails from trumps former chief of staff, mark meadows. The sometimes reports back in December Meadows reportedly pushed the Justice Department to investigate unfounded Conspiracy Theories about the 2020 president ial election. Six months later, trump supporters still touting the Big Lie that led to the January 6th insurrection. This effort is a slowmoving insurrection. Republicanled states are pushing new laws to make it harder to vote and seize control over the control of elections. Pennsylvania republicans are hoping to mimic the bizarre Election Audit in arizona. The states democratic Attorney General says, not so fast. These are folks who are dangerous. These are folks who are trying to undermine our democracy. These are folks who have no respect for the rule of law, and these are folks who are in charge right now in the legislature. Going Errand Boy for Donald Trump is not a legitimate legislative purpose. The filibuster stands in the way of so much of President Bidens agenda, from infrastructure to immigration to Voting Rights. Joining us now to discuss Donald Trumps grip on the Republican Party and the fight to protect Voting Rights, nbc reporter, ali vitaly. Also joining us, brian fallon, and hayes brown, editor for msnbc daily. Ali, i want to start with you. Set the stage for us there in greenville. What is Trump Planning to say to this crowd . Any news since we last spoke . Reporter the same thing a Senior Adviser told me which is the focal points of this speech, at least as theyre prewritten are going after the biden administration, talking about dr. Anthony faucis newly publicized emails from the early days and weeks of the pandemic, and talking about china and reasserting american domination on the world stage. Thats not to say that those are going to be the headlines, though. You mentioned all of the things that are in the news right now around the former president. Those are things that could easily come up. You have to consider that this is the start of a revival of public appearances. Hes supposedly supposed to begin doing rallies again across the country. Cpac, the conservative gathering that hosted him earlier this year announced hes going to be a guest of theirs at a texas gathering a few weeks from now. What that says is hes trying to start asserting his power thats just been spoken about to this point, but now asserting it in a tangible way, inserting himself into the Daily News cycles and messaging of the party. Thats not going to come with open arms from everyone. You talked about congresswoman Liz Cheney. Hes leading a very small charge within the Republican Party trying to wrest it from Donald Trumps control, but there are a lot of people who want to see him take a more public Stance And Use that mega phone to lead this party going forward. The problem is, leading it forward oftentimes means for Donald Trump looking back and relitigating old grievances. The blog didnt work out. It was very short lived. But if you read the Email Statements that have still been going out, they have continuously started to read like his tweets, which were a manifestation of stream of consciousness. By bringing back the rallies, hes bringing back the Inperson Version of that. Those rallies repeatedly over the course of the last five years felt more like stream of consciousness, Realtime Reactions to news cycles. Were about to head into a summer where he takes that mega phone, and that can be a problem for republicans. Nbc gist obtained new audio from representative Liz Cheney this weekend about trumps hold on the Republican Party. Take a listen. I think its a very real threat and its an ongoing threat. And i think that that President Trumps continued activities demonstrate the falsity of the idea that if we simply ignore him, hell go away. There are some in my party who are embracing him. There are some who dont want to embrace him, who dont want him to be part of the future of the party or the country but who think that we can get to that point by simply ignoring him. And i just dont believe that. As you always have such clarity around , this talk me through the consequences if the gop doesnt move away from trump, both for the party and, more importantly, for the country. So the party is, i think we think of the Republican Party mostly as the republican national committee, the national republican brand and federal members of congress and the Republican Party. You got to remember trump is at the North Carolina Rally speaking. Hes there for a state gop party. If you look around the country, many of these state republican parties are not ready to give up on trump. And i think that is something that we have yet to really contend with or think about. How can we keep trump from office or get it so we can focus on the national republicans and ask them what do you do about someone like trump. But it ignores the fact that all of these state parties, they still believable believe that he is the leader of their party. They still want him out there speaking and rallying up their base. Trump, we learned over the last five years, he can win primaries for people. His endorsements can get you the republican nomination. But can it win general . Thats not so certain and thats what leads us into what we see in various states trying to change how general elections are held so that whoever wins the republican primary can actually win the general in what would normally be more contested areas and contested states. So i think thats what the long arc were looking at now with this continued embrace of trump and trumpism, is that we are setting we are letting continue a series of actions that will lead to very questionable results in 2022 and 2024 in the midterms and the next president ial election. If these laws from republican legislatures change how elections are run and how theyre decided ton to stay in place. To underscore that point, republicans are pushing the same lies that led to the insurrection to justify new restrictive voting laws. The new york times Editorial Board writes, mr. Trump and his supporters pursued indiscriminate lawsuits to overturn election results, and then urged on by mr. Trump, some of the his supporters stormed the capitol to halt the completion of the election process. Now they are seeking to rewrite the rules to make it easier for republicans to win elections without winning the most votes. Brian, what is at stake when you have one political party that is working to trim the electorate instead of changing policy to win new voters . I think a lot of democrats after the 2020 election combined with the deplatforming of trump on places like Twitter Sort of hoped it would break with republicans. Thats clearly not happened. This is still trumps party and the Big Lie and the Voter Suppression laws you mentioned that this has spawned in states across the country is the closest thing the Republican Party has to a Policy Platform at this point. And i think Liz Cheney is exactly right about how some republicans, the few of them like her that worry about trump that some of them wished if they just ignore him hell go away and his radicalizing impact will also dissipate. A lot of democrats are letting their guard down on this. I think after the insurrection happened, i think you shouldve seen more of a move to potentially unseat some of the members of congress that participated in that insurrection, and i also think you see a laxness, alicia, in the slowness to bring up h. R. 1, the John Lewis Voting rights act. You have Election Experts that say we need to pass these measures by Labor Day if we want to impact the Voter Suppression laws in time for the 2022 midterms. Lets stick on that point. When it comes to Voting Rights and infrastructure and immigration reform, Voting Rights, the filibuster remains in the way. Trying to figure out what is going on in the mind of Kyrsten Sinema or trying to figure out whats going on in the mind of Joe Manchin is like looking into a black box. Your sense of how they can be effectively pressured, does that need to come from the biden White House directly . It needs to come from the biden White House and it needs front Page Senate Leadership in the form of setting a series of votes on things that pit the democratic caucus in the senate squarely against the republican caucus in the senate, set up votes on the measure, but for the filibuster would be passing. We see the slowness to take up those bills. First such bill was the Commission Vote that happened just before memorial day weekend. We need more votes on measures like that. To be honest, you dont have the votes yet to get rid of the filibuster, thats true, but we really havent tested Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema on actual policy measures that will either live or die based on the filibuster. Only in the last couple weeks have they had a vote on h. R. 1. I hoped we would start lining up those dominos on bills likes like h. R. 1. It needs to be follow up with d. C. State hood. We need to have votes on these measures to build a case with the public about why you need to get rid of the filibuster. If you force Joe Manchin to take a position on these bills, first Kyrsten Sinema siding with republicans, i dont think its a tenable vision for them. But Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden need to put those bills on the floor and force them to make a choice. What do you make of the slowness that brian just articulated there . I think that hes right. I think, yes, the filibuster is in the way, but Joe Manchin himself is in the way. I dont blame schumer for not wanting to put bills on the floor if he doesnt have manchins support. Its embarrassing to get not quite a majority. They dont want to embarrass manchin, but they want to make it so for the bill he supports, a majority would be able to pass it except for the filibuster, that those get put on the floor again and again and again. So thats why he hasnt seen infrastructure yet. Manchin is still not quite in favor of the provisions inside, so i dont blame schumer for not wanting to make him be on the side. We start to see that pressure ramping up. I do think were running out of time to get the bills on the floor and passed. So i think that were going to see that in the next couple of weeks. I think that im very glad that were going to see a vote on h. R. 1 come end of. Yes, sir it will be interesting to see what happened with the John Lewis bill, but manchin in theory supports. Thank you all so much. Next, the fight to end police violence. What does that look like in latino communities . Ah grow up no a new report to share with you revealing a growing number of latinos in America Encountering police brutality. Unidos u. S. Finds between 2014 and today more than 2,600 latinos were killed by police or died in police custody, among them, Adam Toledo of chicago, his killing caught on camera. He was shot by police despite his hands being in the air. He would have turned 14 last week. Joining me, Nicole Gonzalez Van cleave, professor at brown university. And carmen perez, we may have you too. I promise to come to you, fantastic. Nicole, in Chicago Police Kill Latinos at almost seven times the rate of whites. They are racialized as well. For some in the latino community, there was a discrepancy. People were blaming Adam Toledos family, but they werent blaming the Chicago Police for the shooting. And so i think there is latino racism. And it is adjacent to black racism and it is just as deadly and is just as violent. I want to talk a little bit more about that. But carmen, your nonprofit is hosting a rally honoring a 22yearold killed by police last year in california. Your sense of what accountability would look like in that case like this . Certainly. We think accountability first of all, justice is unique to every family, so justice is really pertaining to to what the family needs are. But accountability would be the officer and all the officers responsible for his killing prosecuted as well as fired. And i think that happens especially because we feel that many Police Officers get away with murder. One thing that we dont want to see is this officer being let go, especially when the family has been pushing every single day fighting since June 2nd of 2020 to get justice for their brother. Nicole, you and carmen are deep in this work, so the numbers i read you from the report, theyre not going to surprise either of you. But a lot of people might be surprised simply because they dont see those headlines. Los angeles times argues that latinos need to be more vocal about police brutality. How much of this is about organizing within latino communities . Even the notion of latino is kind of a newly invented category. Lara gomez has a new book called inventing latinos, which is there are mexicanamericans and puerto rican americans, others identify as white, others nonwhite. With that theres going to be disagreements about what is tutoring police violence, whether its justified. In my view, though, f people are dying at police hands, it is unacceptable and we dont have the Accountability Structures to make it stop or to hold these officers accountable. We often protect them. So hopefully we can all as americans agree it is wrong. If we have these numbers that latinos are dying at a significant disproportionate rate of white americans, we need to hold police accountable and change the structures. Carmen, i dont need to tell you there are those who would like to use these issues to divide black communities and latinos who are not black. How do you flip the script to make this an opportunity for Unity And Allyship . There has always been solidarity efforts. As It Per contains to data, theres no good data about latinx people and the issue of mass incarceration, criminal justice, and Police Killings because of the way in which data is collected by race and ethnicity. Rate and ethnicity distinctions are often filled out by Law Enforcement, which leaves room for error, O Latinos are often categorized as black, white, or unknown. We have been fighting on the front lines around racial Justice And Police accountability and were showing up for our black siblings as we are also shouting that people pay attention to the Police Killings in the latino community. So lets not continue to perpetuate this narrative that we are divided. We have been in solidarity for quite some time, especially over the decades of organizing through the Chicano Movement, the black liberation movement, the american indian movement. We have always shut down up for one another. Therefore there were conversations with Fred Hampton and other leaders in the past as well as dr. King and Corky Gonzalez from the Chicano Movement as It Pertained to Police Killings. Of course that narrative could be put out there, but we as latinos need to make sure we show up. And we also have to understand that this has been happening for over 200 years. We know that the history shows that latinos, particularly mexicans, were lynched here in california. About 600 were lynched across the country. And so we understand that Police Killings is our issue too. However, we need to make it a Main Street issue. Were talking about police brutality. How does this apply to bigger questions of Justice Reform . Well, again, whats happening to the latino community is happening to the africanamerican community. When we think about the injustices that these segments are experiencing, it withers away at the legitimacy of the entire system. We expect it to be equitable, fair. When something does go wrong, we expect accountability. And right now so many structures protect Law Enforcement when they are committing crimes. In the case of Adam Toledo, they lied. The police lied and said that Adam Toledo had a gun. If it wasnt for the video, that would have sustained itself. Without Accountability Structures, with prosecutors that are unwilling to charge officers, you know, in some ways it delegitimateizes our american criminal Justice System and we need to do better and demand better. Thank you both. Today President Biden calling a meeting with his national Security Team as it determines how to respond to recent cyberattacks by russia. New today, the President Meeting with his national Security Team that comes after highprofile cyberattacks, including last month when a Hacking Group linked to russia shut down the colonial pipeline, leading to Gas Shortages and panic along the east coast. Another Ransomware Attack last weekend virtually shut down the Jbs Meat Processing Company carried out by a russian group that has made some of the largest Ransomware Demands in recent months n. Massachusetts the Marthas Vineyard Ferry system still affected yesterday after a Ransomware Attack. While these are nothing new, these attacks are becoming more frequent and more expensive, Something Cybersecurity experts have long warned of. According to the White House, Russia Involvement in these attacks will be on the president s mind when he meets with Putin In Geneva later this month. There will be an opportunity for the president to discuss this directly with president putin, to reiterate the fact that we believe that responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals. We will continue to make the case that responsible countries need to take decisive action against ransomware networks. Im joined by Ben Rhodes, former deputy national Security Adviser under President Obama and an msnbc contributor. He is also the author of the Brandnew Book After The Fall being american in the World Weve made. Im excited to talk about the book, ben, but first, i want to ask you about the Cyber Ware attacks. Ken dilanian reports that officials in the biden administration are, quote, hair on fire over these rising cyberattacks and are moving to treat such attacks as a national security threat, using agencies to conduct counteroffenses. Are we talk about going after individuals tore State Governments where these people live . First of all, to shift from treating them like a Law Enforcement matter, like a national Security Matter puts them in the intelligence community. How do you strengthen your defenses and part of that is cyber operations. Some of this could be going over groups that may be engaged in this criminal activity, but i think a lot of us whove been in the national Security Space are skeptical that these groups could operate in russia without at least the kind of tacIt Permission of the russian government. The question thats being debated in this Situation Room in the White House is whether or not to start engaging in counterattacks. The risk of that, of course, is the cycle continues to escalate. You could try to shut down their operations, you could try to send them a message that you can get into their systems as much as theyve been getting into ours. Theres a kind of Cat And Mouse elements to this. Sometimes you want to just send a message, look, we can get into your networks and cause you problems too. Thats something that increasingly as we see states and nonstate actors engaged in the cyber activity, Thats Part of the landscape of the world were in. I think what the Biden Team is atubed to is the fact that this has reached a i want bob where its having economic consequences in the united states as well as being a national security risk. I want to talk about your book. You tweeted that one of the things you learned from writing it is that Corruption And Authoritarianism go Hand In hand. You had the president this week announcing a renewed focus on this question. Your sensitivity what this will look like. This is one of the most underappreciated issues. We talked about how do you respond to vladimir putin with sanctions, but when you look at vladimir Putin Or Someone like his lukashenko in belarus, they have corrupt networks, cronies, people who finance their politics and they run dark money, launder money. So one of the ideas that has gotten traction in the biden White House is, what more can we do from an Enforcement Measure to crack down on that Money Laundering to get at the billions of dollars that people like putin rely on to subsidize everything from disinformation attacks on the united states to his own rule. In your book you draw a line between authoritarian regimes like russia and the current gop. Like, the Republican Party, punt has a particular strain of nationalism, christianity, hostility to muslims, can you expand on that Big Idea there . I think what i basically found in looking at russia or hungary, i talked to an activity there and his basic point to me was the way in which the Prime Minister turned this place into an autocracy was rightwing populism that taps into peoples grievances after the financial crisis, redrawing parliamentary districts, reaching people on the outside who buy up the media and turn it into a a rightwing propaganda machine, but wrapping it up in a nationalist us versus them them, us, were the real hungarians, americans. And so this is a trend that were seeing around the world. Its not just happening here. I think we can understand it better here if we recognize that this has been kind of an Offensive Maneuver by authoritarians over the last decade. In your research in talking with people, did you get a sense of not just the problem but how you undo the problem, how you get to the underbelly of this us versus them . Yeah. I did. I talked to Hong Kong protesters, to people like Alexei Navalny in russia, to democratic activities around the world. There are common components here. If you look at navalny, he was quite innovative in exposing putins corruption. Thats what got him thrown in prison because he hit the vulnerability of the regime. But i think really exposing what the tools are of these autocrats, their corruption networks, the way in which they use disinformation campaigns. If you look at other Opposition Movements that have had success, a real key is unity among the opposition, people like putin try to create disunity. The opposition is able to put an umbrella over itself like in hungary and suddenly they have a chance to take out an auto accurate in the next year. If you look around world, dont ignore issues of democracy. While were focused on really important issues involving the economy, for instance, sometimes we have not paid enough attention to the fact that Voting Rights get rolled back, that communities get marginalized. What is happening with Social Media Platforms that are sorting people into disinformation bubbles, thats what its going to take, an allhandsondeck approach. Thank you for wrapping it up in a bow. The new book is After The Fall. Ben rhodes, thank you so much. Still ahead, 165,000 women left the workforce in april and they were slow to return last month. I have spent a great deal of time working with women who work in the hospitality industry, hotel workers. The big issue going on there is they were laid off during the pandemic because of course theres no business. But now theyre fighting to get their jobs back. The latest Jobs Report shows a sluggish return to the workforce, especially among women. The overall Unemployment Rate for women hit a little over 5 last month. Unemployment higher among women of color, 8 of black women are unemployed. 7 for latinas. The question before us, why . With us an Economy Reporter for the 19th. When you know the Jobs Report comes out, i walk over to twitter to see how youre breaking down what this means for women. What do you make of the numbers that we got . Alicia, i always know when you like my tweets. I get an email and ill be on your show over the weekend. You know, we had some good news this month. We saw that about half of all of the job gains in may went to women. A lot of that was driven by what the Vice President was talking about, a lot of jobs came back in the hospitality sector. That was the sector that gained the most jobs. When that happens, women tend to best estimate theyre the most likely to be in that sector, same with the public sector, education jobs. We saw a big rebound there last month. Thats the good news. The less good news is that the trend we have seen all year continues to be true even when we have a month thats a little bit better, which is that women of color are still far, far behind. White women are around 8 Unemployment Rate like you mentioned. And black women are almost twice that at this point in the pandemic. And so just to put it in context a little bit, the monthtomonth numbers you have to kind of couch them a little bit because we reversed essentially what happened in april when women lost a lot of jobs now in may. So this is a really the situation changes month to month. We need to focus on the trend, and the trend is still true. We continue to ask ourselves, yes, its a recovery, but a recovery for whom. Some of it has to do with the industries were talking about. How much does this have to do with Child Care . A lot of it has to do with Child Care. I would say the other two big factors are the pandemic and Child Care. So the pandemic is still not under control. Children under the age of 12 cannot get vaccinated. That hurts moms and their ability to remain in the workforce. The other part is Child Care. The Child Care industry, 1 in 7 Child Care jobs disappeared from the start of the pandemic. We have centers that are back, yes, but a lot of them are not back at the capacity that they were before this pandemic started. Until that starts to happen, we are not going to see those numbers come down. And the reality is that even as we look at those numbers and talk about when are we going to be back in a prepandemic world, probably not until the end of 2022. Even then, what world would we be returning to anyway . Right now in this moment, white workers have a lower Unemployment Rate than black workers had at the start of the pandemic, before the the pandem before covid, when the economy was doing well. So we are working hard to get back to that point, but it was not a point of equality either. It still was an economy that was hurting a lot of women of color, just like we are seeing now. You have also reported on the expanded Child Tax Credit, writing that some of the poorest families still Cant Access the money. You write, many dont know the expansion happened. Even if they do, information about what they have to do to get it is still scarce. Many Lack Access to a computer or dont have the digital literacy to fill out the form and provide the necessary paperwork. Your sense of what the biden administration, what congress needs to be doing to fill in those gaps . Yeah, thats exactly it. We know that this administration is tuned in to the fact that these issues are there, that we need to work on them. However, even policies like the Child Tax Credit, which, you know, was one of the most significant policies to come out of the administration so far, it is coming up against Road Blocks because we are working with a system that really was not designed to reach the lowest wage workers, the people who would really benefit from this money. So were going to start to see the Child Tax Credit come out in july. It is going to come out monthly. A lot of families are going to benefit from that, but it could cut Child Poverty in half if and this is a big if if it can reach lowwage workers who dont file taxes, people who dont have permanent addresses, undocumented folks. It has to reach them. So that is the effort that is taking place right now. It is really, really challenging for the administration, for the local organizations that are doing it because there is just no system in place to reach these people. We have never done it. So we are doing that now, and theres a lot of potential, but that is going to be determined by how successful we are at reaching them. I hope i see you between now and a month from now, but please pencil me in for the next report. You know i love talking to you. Thank you so much.
