Efforts by republicans across this country to target young transgender americans are raising concerns about health, safety and equality. In florida Governor Desantis kicked off Pride Month by signing a bill barring transgender girls from competing on teams. And now there are 20 republican members backing a bill to ban pride flags. And there are more than 100 antitrans bills across the country. Lawmakers in favor of these bills say that they are doing to protect kids. I want to introduce you to one of the families fighting back against these bans. Including one 13yearold whose life could be changed forever if a bill were to pass. When they are passing bills that will intentionally make life miserable for children and their families, they are not doing their jobs. Reporter Amber And Adam are parents of max and lulu. This is about being sure that were making the Bernie Sanders decisions possible for our kids. This is about saying that i need to just watch you emerge and when it happens and that light turns on and you are happy and healthy, that is it. And 35 bills in 20 states threaten transgender Health Care with one now law. We all imagine what we might be when we grow up. And so the two bills died in the Texas House last week, but that doesnt mean that the effects are not felt by the trans community, the parents and that the republican effort is over. The Lieutenant Governor of texas called on governor an about the abbott to hold a special session. And the family will continue fighting. Texas is their home and they will fight to stay there. I want to bring in Alphonso David from human Rights Campaign. The hrc announced plans to challenge the new law. And so i want to start with that information talking about what your organization is doing to overturn these now laws in some states. Absolutely. And first thank you for having me. The human Rights Campaign is directly confronting this antilgbtq bias that were seeing by raising awareness of the urgent need for equality and rebutting the myths and misinformation that antiequality forces are using. We know that more than 70 of the voters in this country support equality. More than 70 of voters in this country Support Nondiscrimination protections for lgbtq people including transgender people. And, yeah, these elected officials are ignoring the facts. So well hold them accountable. This past week, the human Rights Campaign announced that were going to be suing The State of florida and Governor Desantis for advancing a discriminatory and arbitrary law that bans transgender girls from participating in sports consistent with their Gender Identity. And as you mentioned before, this bill was advanced or signed on the very first day of pride. So desantis is sending a message, it is a slap in the face to the Lgbtq Community to basically say well disregard you, well devalue you, and well advance a bill to effectively erase you. But we have a message for him. We will see him in court, well hold him and elected officials who are trying to erase us accountable. So many things that i want to get in on this. As i was interviewing and doing this piece with the family and talking to the Texas State Legislature, i came to understand that it is as much they didnt understand what being transgender was. And you heard in that piece the comparison that texas legislature made when talking about Ice Cream and saying if my kid asked to Ice Cream all day, i wouldnt give it to my child. You know, so why would i allow them to be transgender. And essentially saying if im a giraffe, it doesnt mean that they are a giraffe. And it struck me that they didnt understand what being transgender was or is. And that is really the core of the problem here. Elected officials dont know the facts. They dont understand what Gender Identity is in many cases. Or if they do, they are kowtowing to antiequality extremists and advancing disinformation. But this disinformation is really dangerous. It is dangerous for the Health And Safety and the very lives of transgender youth and adults alike. We know that transgender young people attempt suicide at a rate of four times than others. And they also high h. Suffer Hire Rates of dysmorphia and depression. And so when elected officials are playing doctors, which is what they are doing here, without information and in fact advancing disinformation, they should understand that their bills have a significant Collateral Consequence on the lives of transgender young people throughout this country. And americans dont even support this legislation. If you look at some of the polling that we have, a question asked to do you support a bill that prohibits Gender Transition medical care for minors, 66 opposing it. Do you support a bill that prohibits transgender youth competing on teams that align with their gender, 66 oppose it. So what do you say to the kids that have suffered for so long, that are already so vulnerable that have already been through such a difficult time and even kind of coming to this reality of understanding that they are in Fact Transgender . In The State of florida for instance that just passed and made this into a law. Ill say two things for transgender young people out there. You are resilient. You matter. And we know that you matter. We have a community of advocates across the country that are going to continue fighting for your rights. The Lgbtq Community has faced obstacles in the past. And we have overcome those obstacles. Remember your capacity. Remember your resilience. And your value. And know that you have a community that is behind you. We will keep on fighting. We will use the courts. We will make sure that we hold these elected officials accountable at the Ballot Box and we will always be in your corner. So i want every single transgender person out there to know that they matter and that there is a community to support them. Im sure that they thank you for that. What im hearing from that woman that you spoke to, is this a way them saying that we dont want to hear about the past anymore, we dont want to hear about whether or not it was a stolen election, tell us what will happen. And if you dont tell us what will happen, we may not be supporting you . Is that what they are saying or no . Am i going too far . Reporter i do think that there are people here who believe what they believe however wrong that is about 2020. What i get the sense from talking to follow,s here is they know how the former president feels. In many cases they agree with him that something was rigged in the election even though that was not the case. And at the same time, they said like to hear what is going to come next. There is a mix here. Ive done enough trump rallies the last five years, it is a mix of the Greatest Hits but at a certain point you do have to infuse something new and i think that that will be the interesting thing as former President Trump starts getting back out on the Campaign Trail and out on the Rally Circuit what the new vision he has is. You find out from the New York Times this morning that in the final days of the Trump Presidency Mark meadows was trying to get the Department Of Justice to investigate absolutely insane Conspiracy Theories about italy and the vote, were seeing trumps fascination with this fake audit in arizona. The January 6 insurrection. Thisis not over. This obsession with this election is something that the republican party is not going to shake. So whatever these folks say they want to hear, Donald Trump will not be moving on from all of this and i think that that will be a problem going forward for the republican party and in a larger way it is a problem for american democracy because we have one political party that is increasingly committed to delegitimizing the 2020 president ial election. And this is something that i never thought that i would see in my lifetime. And you have folks it seems like in the former president s ear telling him dont go down this road today. Dont talk about these Conspiracy Theories. I want to read from you from the daily beast. Allies have made a point of getting in touch with trump to deliver a simple message, whoever is trying to get in your ear to tell you that you could be reinstated by august doesnt know what they are talking about. And it could be used against you by your enemies. It would be better to focus on the 2022 midterm elections. Yeah, but when does trump ever listen to any of his allies even when they have been correct on what the direction of the party should be. I mean, listen, this for him is his typical strategy. He repeats something over and over again until it becomes a fact like the Big Lie that the 2020 election is was not valid. And twothirds of republican voters actually believe that, and so when our political party knows that they are promoting this, it is because that they are raising Money And Organizing and orchestrating with that money. They are laying the groundwork for undermining future elections and contesting the Voting Rights of those who are not voting with them. And this is the very dangerous thing for democracy. And they keep saying that they are trying to save democracy and that is ludicrous on its face. Charlie, i want to play Michael Flynn, a decorated general, saying what he said. Lets take a listen. And then he walked back those comments saying that he said the opposite, no reason whatsoever for any coup in america. That is not what he said in the video. That is not at all what he said. He is a dcorated jchb. General and defended this country. That is what he has committed himself to doing. He is promoting a coup. What does this do to the republican Party And Democracy as a whole and elevating these Fringe Figures and Michael Flin Flynn now a Fringe Figure . If the idea was so farfetched, why did every single Living Secretary of Defense Sign a letter in january saying, look, a coup would be terrible, it would be unconstitutional, why did they feel the necessity to say that . I dont think that it will happen, but it is an indication of trends on the right that are just profoundly disturbing. The attacks on democracy. The attacks on voting. Attacks on legitimacy. Even the speculation about the possibility of a coup. And by the way, the Myanmar Coup is one of the worlds most brutal crackdown deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians. For anyone to be talking about this even in a light way is profoundly disturbing. And unfortunately, this is the anger that Donald Trump is stoking. And i dont know whether Donald Trump believe this is stuff, but what he is counting on is that other people do. Because keeping people angry, keeping them outraged serves his political agenda. It fuels any potential he has to stay relevance. And this is ugly for all of us. And the reaction on George P. Bush running for Texas Attorney General and choosing not to mention his family at all. And as i said on twitter when a member of the Bush Family actually throws his entire family pretty much under a bus, the republican party is very much in trouble. They are usually supportive of each other. And have generally railed against a lot of what they see. So this tells you where the direction of the republican party is going. And if i may comment on the Michael Flynn thing, i dont think that he is a Fringe Figure. He is a retired three star military general. And he has credibility to say something like that, to say a Military Coup should happen, to put it in the minds of individuals that maybe somebody with his credentials can say that even if they are denying it, it is out there and then deny it but it is out there in online platform. Welcome back. President biden and senate republicans have agreed to continue negotiations on Infrastructure Spending despite a divide over the scope of the proposal and how to actually pay for it. Throughout the Week West Virginia Senator signaled cautious optimism that deal will be reached and they will connect again monday. But as the president s key priorities hang in the balance, moderate democratic lawmakers like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are making it clear that they dont want the party to advance it without republican votes. An manchin says that he is hopeful that bipartisan deal can still be worked out ashe refuses to bend to pressure. I dont think that it will fall apart, i think that she has worked hard and she has a good group around her of ranking republicans. My democrat colleagues have known me for over ten years. And it has been the most bipartisan Voting Pattern in the senate. So for them to think ive changed my Voting Pattern because i want to be in a position of being that one person in the middle, that never happened. I didnt change. But he doesnt mention the fact that the senate now is a completely different body than it was even a decade ago. Sure it was split back then, but now, i mean, thinking of the senate as being a bipartisan body is seeing it as kind of this utopian place that does not exist really. And i wonder if someone like Joe Manchin is taking that into account when asking the president to settle on a bipartisan deal. Yeah, i think that that is a good question, a question that you are hearing a lot from progressives supporting President Bidens Infrastructure Package and other initiatives that have been stalled or losing momentum. And there is a sense of frustration among democrats that it is a fake Ball Game here, that the other side is not going to really get to a place where they would genuinely compromise and so they are wasting time. They look back at 2009, President Obama came in and negotiated on Health Care and other initiatives that didnt get a lot of almost no republican support. And the lesson a lot of democrats came out of that with is dont buy into that, it is a fools game. But what you hear from President Biden is a real desire to hold out and see if he cant get there and they have made some movement toward each other. There is at least conceivably a compromise that would give each side what they want if they choose to go there. So it is a question of will. And President Biden is willing to give it a little bit more time at this point to see if they can get there. Partly because he wants to show people like Joe Manchin that he made every effort to get it. But it seems like Joe Manchin wont budge on this thing. And they are worlds apart. Republicans have been very consistent about what they think that infrastructure is and they see it as hard infrastructure like bridges, highways, roadways. They dont want all the other stuff that biden wants which is the reason why it has such a high price tag. So if the president decides to pass the bill, what happens to Job Creation and child care, what happens to, you know, broadband and all the other things that biden wants to put into the infrastructure plan. What options does he have . They could break it into separate bills. You could have a bill that republicans could support that just has quote unquote hard infrastructure. And then pass another bill uses democrats only that allows them to avoid the ffilibuster. But the problem is that even to get to the hard infrastructure requires a way to pay for it. What President Biden wants to do is raising increased taxes on corporations, somewhat closer to where it was before President Trump cut it. And a lot of republicans will find that hard to swallow. And weve heard from some Progressive Democrats saying that if Joe Biden negotiates too much with republicans, we are already decreased the number significantly. So if we give in too much, we wont vote on the bill. Are they bluffing . They are not bluffing, but it represents the pressure that President Biden faces from the left. I think if he came up with a deal that he could live with, he and Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer would be able to pull along enough to get it through. So it could be some bumps in the road to get to that point. And youre right, it is such a narrow tight rope that he is walking here because he only has 50 votes in the senate among democrats and only a couple more votes in the house in terms of you cant afford to lose anybody whether in the middle or the left. You have to be able to navigate a rather extraordinary political dynamic there in order to keep all 50 together in the senate much less in the house. A really tough spot. Peter baker, thank you. We could see start seeing mandatory measures and fines. And then there is the issue of the crops because this is a state that supplies much of nations fruits, vegetables, livestock, dairy. And were already hearing about farmers selling off livestock and things like that, and that could later on lead it higher food prices. But there is also a more immediate of the things that i worry about is what it means to the farm workers. As we do cut back on some of these crops, people lose their jobs. Because water and jobs are connected. And these are some of the most vulnerable people in the economy. The highered farm workers arent wealthy people and they need all the work that they can get. And when we do cut back in agricultural, there is very vulnerable people that will lose their jobs. Reporter Ed A And in the western u. S. In terms of Detroit Monitor that the government puts out, basically all of california and all nevada are in some form of at least a moderate drought, but those dark areas, that is known as exceptional drought. And that means that you see krot losses, you see water emergencies, low reservoir emergencies. And there is also the serious danger now of wildfires. That is something that they are looking at very closely. This land is all now tinder dry. So we could see more of that and if that is not enough, they are worried now that this deficit, not something that you cure overnight, so they are already starting to worry about next year. So embattled Congressman Matt Gaetz continues to insist hes done nothing wrong, but Law Enforcement telling Nbc News federal prosecutors looking into whether gaetz obstructed justice during a Phone Call with a witness in a sex crimes investigation. Gaetz, who refuses to answer questions on the investigation has not been charged with any crime and says hes sure he wont be charged with one. I think that theres a lot going on in florida. Listen, Matt Gaetz better hope hes not indicted specifically because thats on tape, but also him putting that out there and saying that, should he be so sure . The best thing that you can do when youre under investigation and surely something gaetz lawyers would be advising him to do, keep a low profile, dont make any comments on the pending investigation, let doj do its work, but dont do anything to make it worse. So nbc first reported the Obstruction Investigation on thursday, which then prompted gaetz to go on newsmax. Lets take a listen. Do you think its a coincidence that Nbc News is now citing a Law Enforcement source that claims that i have somehow obstructed justice . This is a way to make the Process Serve as the punishment. Im not quite sure the point that hes making, but is he seemingly blaming Law Enforcement . Well, look, ill tell you, gaetz actually is partially correct here. Although we report these details of investigations as they come to light, In A Perfect World where prosecutors and investigators are engaging in investigatory work, none of the details of an investigation would leak out prior to an indictment. And its easy to understand why. You want to protect the reputations of people who ultimately arent charged. Thats why the grand Jury Process itself is secret. But of course we dont live In A Perfect World. Witnesses who speak to Law Enforcement often come forward and speak and thats the most likely source of most of what we know about ongoing investigations is people whove been called upon as witnesses. So gaetz also used newsmax to declare his innocence. Lets take a listen to that. I spent my entire career pursuing justice. I dont obstruct justice. The only thing ive obstructed is the injustice oftentimes at the hands of the Department Of Justice. I know every conversation ive been a part of. I have never obstructed justice. Ive never gotten close to it. So you actually wrote in response to that and nbcnews. Com article in which you said that could come back to haunt him. Why, joyce . Well, certainly gaetz, if hes ultimately charged and the fact substantiate it, it wouldnt make him the first person charged with criminal conduct whos vehemently denied it. And prosecutors when theyre fortunate enough to have a video like this or something in writing will often present evidence of his conduct and then hear that persons statements. What it helps prosecutors do is establish knowledge of guilt. An individual who instructs justice tries to keep the truth from coming to light because they do know theyve been involved in conduct thats likely criminal, certainly wrong. And so this sort of evidence can be very helpful to prosecutors in a trial. Of course its important to say that Gaetz Hasnt been charged and continues to deny that he did anything wrong.
