And that same day we reconvened the congress and did our duty under the constitution and the laws of the united states. You know, President Trump and i have spoken many times since we left office. And i dont know if well ever see Eye To eye on that day. But i will always be proud of what we accomplished for the american people over the last four years. And i will not allow democrats or their allies in the media to use one tragic day to discredit the aspirations of millions of americans. Youll recall on January 6th the Vice President was swiftly ushered out of the building by Capitol Police as rioters chanted, quote, hang Mike Pence. It came within a few moments of breaching the room where pence was hiding during the siege. In related news a Police Sergeant is speaking out about his experience on January 6th the first time. It was prompted by anger that congress failed to form the capitol riot commission. Trump sent me. We will listen to you. We are here to take over the capitol. We are here to hang Mike Pence. They thought we were there for them. And we werent. So they turned against us. It was very scary because i thought i was going to lose my life. I could hear my fellow officers screaming, the agony. All i could think was we cant let these people in. Theres going to be a slaughter inside. It hurts me that the country that i love, that i have sacrificed so much dont care about us. And they dont. Prosecutors are now asking those charged to help foot the bill. U. S. Attorneys office is seeking restitution of 2,000 for each Felony Case and 500 for each misdemeanor. That covers the cost of replacing broken doors, window and other property including art and furniture. So far about 500 people have been charged and more charges are expected. President biden is set to continue negotiations on his Tax Plan with republicans again today even as Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell throws Cold Water on a new White House offer. The president is expected to talk once again with West Virginia Senator the Lead Negotiator on the republican side. Tax increases that dont reverse anything in the 2017 tax cut bill. Also floated a minimum tax and toughest enforcement on the highest earners. These taxes would pay for the White Houses proposed 1. 7 trillion infrastructure plan. Despite this, Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell still appears unmoved. Once you get out of the tax increase area, youll create an enormous amount of controversy. I dont think that will appeal to members of my party. Joining us now cofounder of punchbowl news. Lets start with the debate over the president s spending plan. Is there any Tax Increase Leader mcconnell would be willing to accept . No, not on Income Tax or corporate tax at all. User fees, they would if you could call those attacks, theyll go for that. Because thats how republicans have talked about funding their plan for infrastructure. User fees and people who use the road and they pay, you know, tolls or some kind of tax. Theyll do that. But theyre not going to go for any kind of Income Tax or corporate Tax Hike or anything at all. I mean, the republican party is a loss right now but one thing they agree on is that they dont like taxes. You know, i just have a hard time seeing. I talked to some republican senators involved in Negotiations Yesterday and they say they didnt show any support for that for what biden floated at all. So, if that is true and that is at The End of this road like a big road block, why is biden even pursuing this route to bipartisanship . Well, thats an excellent question and if you ask hill democrats, theres a lot that would say the president should just give up. I think, look, two issues here. One biden really believes that this issue should be bipartisan. Infrastructure. Heres a man who served in congress for 36 years and voted for dozens of these bills and, you know, really supports infrastructure and he thinks this is common ground for the parties that they cant agree on this, what else can they agree on . The second, they dont have 50 votes necessarily in the senate. They have to get 50 votes at least. They have some of their own moderates and guys like Joe Manchin in West Virginia and they will be concerned with judge doing a Party Line Vote if they try to do a Party Line and try to do it without republicans at all. Manchin doesnt like the ide they want to cut a deal with republicans and i think that puts pressure on the White House and puts pressure on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to find some kind of middle ground. Lets talk about Mike Pences acknowledgment that January 6th was a dark day. Does that put him at odds with majority of trump voters and achieve what he is trying to do which is preserve as what he sees as the palatable parts of the Trump Record and his time in the administration while trying to siphon off what happened on January 6th . I dont know the answer to it. The majority of trump voters dont believe that trump lost the election. They believe that he won and that it was fraudulently stolen from him which, of course, is not true. Now, pence is trying to thread the needle here. He was there on January 6th. I was there. You know, it wasnt just like one dark day. There were weeks and months of leading up to that moment where trump was lying about what happened in the election. He fomented this attack on the capitol and for pence to say, well, we are just not going to see Eye To eye on this. I guess hes trying, like you said, trying to get buy in from the trump voters if he wants to run for president in 2024. There are a lot of them, the most hardcore ones that blame pence. And trump himself blames pence. In the middle Of May he was talking about this. Pence didnt have the courage, quote unquote. So, i dont know if pence can do it. Hes going to try, you know, hes going to try to wrap himself and im not sure trump will give it to him. I think you were right there was a much longer lead up to that and were still living in the aftermath of it. John, thanks for waking up early with us. Economists are also optimistic after learning that Unemployment Benefits fell to 385,000 for the final week Of May. The first time claims have fallen below 400,000 since the pandemic began. That is not as clear cut in the data, but if the numbers are lower than expected, that says that, hey, something is really wrong here for republicans and they get to, you know, blungen President Biden and his economic agenda for more than that when it comes to that. However, if the numbers are really good, they say, you know, this is why we need to do our plans and what were doing is working and if the numbers arent great, they get to say the exact same thing. So, usually these numbers are kind of a choose your own adventure especially when you have a White House like we have now that says theyre taking the long view and not let every Months Job numbers derail and change the way they think about the economy. I have to ask you how the does the White House view the costs and benefits of this meeting with president putin. I think they know how high the tensions are, first of all, with putin and the united states and more importantly they know the entire world is watching because this is a president who is going to meet with g7 and meet with the allies and then kind of serve as the proxy for the whole west to talk to putin and tell him, you know, cut it out with all the things that youre doing and that is something that he is probably going to say. We know that he said before that biden has said before that that he looked at putin and said he told him he doesnt have a soul. He doesnt think that he has a soul. So they already have a tense relationship and after all that has happened since 2014 when they had that facetoface there is a lot more that this administration wants him to answer for and immense pressure from the world for President Biden to tell him to cut it out and have to change the relationship and try to do something. They say this White House and they say they want kind of a normal relationship with russia. They want to be able to have their issues and kind of come to the table on things like Climate Change but at the same time, this is not a russian government. This is not a russian leader who want that. So, thats a huge tension as they go into this meeting. Well see how the President And Putin talk about the meeting after they leave because that will tell us a lot about what the future is going to look like. You know, eugene, i think about the 2020 president ial election and how we often heard the refrain about challenges at home and challenges abroad and everyone knew that when President Biden took office, he was first going to have to get his hands around this pandemic, handle some of the pressing domestic issues but that there were incredible looming crisis when it came to Americas Place in the world. Beyond that meeting with putin, what else does the President Hope to gain from this trip overseas . I think, you know, biden has been promising, he promises during the campaign, he has been promising during his months in office that he wants to show the u. S. Allies that, quote, america is back. Hes still presenting this bit of a fracture here within the democratic caucus to move this bill forward. A bill, lets be real, that biden promised not only in his joint address to congress, but also on his build back better tour as well as during the campaign. Voters are looking at this situation and Progressive Organizations are looking at this situation like this is a major hold up we cannot afford going into the mid terms and this voters are going to react to pause still at a an impasse on the definition of infrastructure. This is about care workers, investments in Frontline Workers that kept this economy going during this pandemic. This is also about making sure that Working Class people get what they need and i appreciated Jamals Statement Yesterday where he noted that you cannot, you cannot dilute this and you cannot compromise this bill down to a level where the people lose. Thats what i see happening right now in these negotiations between biden and republicans but also that is what is being reiterated by manchin as hes standing solid in his decision to not move forward with this on reconciliation and its something the democratic caucus needs to resolve quickly. When we talk about infrastructure and we talk about anything that the u. S. Senate issic looing at it all brings us back to the question of the filibuster. You have more than 100 liberal groups calling to abolish the filibuster. Does that change the equation at all . I think it shows the mounting pressure, alicia. What we have here these are the same groups that democrats will rely on to push their messaging through the mid terms and theyre saying, get to it. We need Hr1 And Hr4 especially with the Voter Suppression bills passing across the country and we need these types of investments in infrastructure and we need a January 6th commission. These are not new calls for action. These are not new things and priorities that we know are on voters minds. But what is new, again, is this pressure that were seeing from the White House targeting senators Manchin And Sinema, to stop being a roadblock here. Because we know, we have nonsensical republicans in congress who are voting against these things. Voting against things that will benefit americans. Voting against the truth on a January 6th commission. But what we know is that even with this impasse, voters are going to be looking at democrats and the White House, asking, what have you delivered for us. How have you improved our lives. How have you protected our Voting Rights in this moment that theyre under attack. And theyre going to expect a concrete answer about whether or not biden and democrats delivered or not. And its not going to be a question of if those things were delivered along bipartisan lines, its whether or not i can act as the polls easily. Its about whether or not i know the truth about January 6th. And to do that, these progressive groups are saying, abolish the filibuster right now. What is the axios one big thing for this morning . My, how the mighty fall. So you know, Donald Trump shut down his blog because it wasnt getting much traffic. We worked with this company called news whip, which looks at how much interaction different types of content is getting on social media, where almost all Information Consumption is done. And it turns out the reason he shut it down is that his average post on that blog was getting about as much traffic as a run of the Mil Story on the tennessean, which is the newspaper out of nashville in tennessee. His average posts would get about 10 the reach of what you would see with your typical New York Times story, which is why he was so frustrated, why he shut it down. It just shows how hard it is for him to break through, only months after he could command almost international Minutebyminute Attention by saying or tweeting almost anything. Okay. So heres my question, though, when i look at those numbers, which is, does that tell you about Donald Trumps reach and power, or does that tell you about how americans are now interfacing with different Tech Platforms . I think its definitely about his reach. Hes having a hard time getting through. In general, were seeing it with our own traffic at axios, every Media Company is seeing. People are just not that interested in politics. People are no longer obsessed with what Donald Trump has to say. It doesnt mean he has a massive following inside the republican party, but people just dont care. He put out that Statement Yesterday in regards to China And Fauci and basically saying that the chinese should pay the american people and the world 10 trillion, because in his words, they created the virus. And it just doesnt get the Bang For The Buck that it used to for him. Hes very frustrated. Remember, hes booted off of facebook, hes booted off of twitter. You dont really see him on tv that much. And this is a guy whos used to getting a lot of attention. One of the things were hearing, hes going to try a different tact over the weekend. Hes doing a speech in north carolina. And he believes the way to break through is to turn dr. Fauci into sort of his new hillary, which is like, hit him about the virus, about his emails that were leaked to the Washington Post recently. For whatever reason, fauci is such a villain with the right. Like, people just seem to hate him. And he seems to move the needle. You see Tucker Carlson almost daily pounding on dr. Fauci. It seems hard to imagine that this is whats going to break through and give Donald Trump his sort of return to the Stage And Command the attention like he used to, but its also like theyre trying to figure something out, because the things that hes doing arent working. Right. And in the absurdity of going after dr. Fauci, theres also an implicit admission that former President Trump hasnt figured out how to really land a punch against the sitting president. Yeah i mean, i think he loves attention, right . And the reason that he was able to command so much power over the republican party is that whatever he said, people responded to. And he really was gooded a at twitter. He was good at getting all of our attention and getting people to write about it. And then he lost that power and he lost the power of the presidency. And there might be this fantasy on the right that hes going to be returned magically to office, which is never going to happen. I think in his own head, he thinks it could happen, but hes trying to figure out, how could he play a role . The truth is, i dont think people are as interested in politics as they were before. I think people are returning to a normal life. I believe for some time that people are consuming way too much politic and it seems like thats the verdict of the american people. People are returning to a more normal life can a more normal consumption pattern. Well see what happens when you get closer to the 2022 elections or 2024. Its why i think Hell Run again. I think he wants the platform, needs the platform, and the only way you get it is by being a viable, real candidate and he knows that, as long as hes either doesnt have massive legal problems or doesnt have massive health problems, people around him assume that he will run, if for no other reason, that reason.
